Operational Energy Savings Series -2 The operational energy savings series is best for property and facility managers. In part two of this series we will look at other ways to save energy without any or with very little capital investment. Similar to the previous piece, we will break down the opportunities by the different sectors.

COMMERCIAL SECTOR • Daylight harvesting in entrances/front lobbies • Cooling curtailment program without disturbing tenants too much - reduced chilled water setpoints near end of day.

This would affect multiple building components (chiller, pumps, compartment units, AHUs, etc.)

• Reduce lighting intensity in certain zones (ex. Emergency lighting, parking garage, certain rooms - mechanical/ electrical, etc.)

• Free cooling in the winter/shoulder. Certain zones as well (ex. elevator machine room) • Night lighting program - exterior lighting can be turned off or lighting intensity could be reduced.

5 Reasons Social Media Matters More Than Ever As leaders in the commercial building sector, knowing how and when to communicate has always been important. But now in the age of COVID, and as the world collectively moves towards a carbon-free tomorrow, having an effective communications strategy is as important as it gets. Why? Real estate makes space for climate capitalism An industry view from CREST Awards Host Tom Rand

by Barbara Carss Tom Rand sees the commercial real estate sector as a well placed ally in his envisioned strategy to counter climate disruption effectively, profitably and amicably. The clean-tech venture capitalist and author of the recently released book, The Case for Climate Capitalism, Economic Solutions for a Planet in Crisis, will host the Third Annual Commercial Real Estate Sustainability Trailblazers (CREST) awards, Nov. 5., to recognize the achievements of collaborative landlord-tenant teams in pursuit of energy savings.

“The ability for buildings to play a role as urban-centred power points and as urban-centred focuses of efficiency is profound,” he says.

“I think that sector has figured out: This is really low-hanging fruit.

We can be a hero of the climate story, and make money being a hero of the climate story.”
