Leading Ontario’s Clean Energy Transition As the global population grows and energy demand increases, getting to net zero has never been more important for the environment. Enbridge Gas is uniquely positioned to support the transition to a low-carbon economy through innovative energy solutions and collaboration with governments and partners to keep energy affordable, reliable and reduce environmental impact.

Natural gas is an essential part of Ontario’s transition towards a clean energy future. Compared to electricity, natural gas provides about twice the energy needs of Ontario at about half the cost. As natural gas meets 30 percent of Ontario’s energy needs today, displacing natural gas with only electricity would cost Ontarians billions of dollars to invest in electric generation systems. Leveraging our existing assets and pipeline infrastructure is a more responsible and cost-effective way to supply cleaner fuels and reduce emissions in a significant way. Moreover, as renewable electricity can’t be efficiently stored, natural gas provides a reliable backup when wind and sunlight aren’t available or when above-ground infrastructure is impacted by ice or wind.

Here’s a quick look at what Enbridge Gas is doing to fight climate change: •

Conservation programs: Since 1995, our conservation programs have helped over 170,000 homes and businesses reduce costs and save more than 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas. That’s enough energy to serve 12.5 million homes for one year and is the emissions reduction equivalent of taking 12.2 million cars off the road.

•

Greener gas: We’re working with partners to turn food scraps, farm waste and sewage into carbon-neutral renewable natural gas (RNG), which is then added to the natural gas supply to reduce emissions at a lower cost than electricity. We’re also using surplus renewable electricity to generate and blend hydrogen into the natural gas system—a first-of-its-kind initiative in North America.

Cleaner fleets: With our turnkey program, we’re switching fleets to compressed natural gas (CNG)—a cost-effective, low-carbon alternative to diesel fuel. Plus, blending in RNG can lead to a zero-carbon footprint when used to fuel heavy transportation.

•

Greener heat: We’re partnering to advance highly efficient, low-carbon heating solutions, such as combined heat and power and geothermal technology.

•

ESG goals: Enbridge Gas has officially targeted net-zero emissions in our own operations by 2050, with a 35 percent intensity reduction by 2030.

Insights from a climate advocate: Dr. Richard Munang

Canada is among countries that have committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 in line with its commitment to the Paris Climate Change agreement. Accordingly, the country has for the first time, through legislative processes made accountable emissions reduction part of the law. This is the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, which among aspects, enshrines the 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target of 40-45%.

Across Canada, building emissions account for 17% of the country’s total emissions. This then means that among sectors that will need to cut emissions is real estate. But the bigger question is how these emissions can be cut while creating much needed socioeconomic opportunities. Specifically speaking, efforts to green the building sector can become an investment opportunity as opposed to being a regulatory cost.

It is on the basis of such an investment angle that efforts of programs like the race2reduce can enhance traction in the mainstream of economies.

BOMA Toronto Member Profile Steven Pacifico B.Sc (Env.) MES VP, Sustainability, Innovation and National Programs Epic Investment Services A life long environmentalist and a Master’s Degree in Corporate Sustainability at York University ignited Steven’s passion to create a greener, healthier planet. His first job at The Delphi Group, a consulting sustainability firm, exposed him to CRE, which accounts for40% of emissions globally. Motivated to help reduce those emissions to net zero, Steven has worked for the past 15 years with various firms within CRE to develop foundational sustainability initiatives and strategies that are considered groundbreaking. When Steven embarked on his career, over 20 years ago, there were only a handful of professionals working in corporate sustainability – he was one of the Industry’s trailblazers.

Back in the day, there was no precedent for sustainability measures as a strategy; a lot of senior executives did not see value – they just saw costs. Now, it has been proven that sustainability brings extreme value to businesses. For every dollar invested $3 comes back whether it be cost savings, risk reduction, tenant or stakeholder satisfaction or increasing valuation of properties they manage.

He credits organizations like BOMA Toronto who were with him on the ground floor of the movement to provide support, education and encouragement to people developing sustainability policies and programs. Programs like R2R also help leverage and validate the ground-breaking work being done, and help new players understand the basics of GHG emission & energy reporting, monitoring and support to address an organization’s sustainability goals.

At Epic Investment Services, Steven has defined the need to transform portfolios from high impact to clean, healthy, smart, and low carbon buildings. In his short time there, he has saved the portfolio more than $2.5 million, dropped emissions by 17%, and made significant investments into assets that will generate value for years to come.

Steven believes there’s never been a more exciting time to be in CRE because of the major growth opportunities – sustainability professionals, data scientists, engineers, and IT specialists are all needed to help owner-operators understand the key risks and opportunities of energy and GHG emissions and how to monitor and support their organization’s material sustainability practices.

A big believer in relationship building, Steven is both a mentor and mentee and believes in the spirit of collaboration to create workable solutions and breakthrough ideas.

He urges everyone in the BOMA community to think about climate risk, low carbon, health, well being, and smart innovation.
