BOLTON SCHOOL JUNIOR GIRLS’ 2017/2018 REVIEW

BOLTON SCHOOL GIRLS’ DIVISION

From the Head... Life at Hesketh House is never dull and the activities documented within this publication show the range

of experiences and challenges enjoyed by our pupils during the last academic year. As part of our ‘Habits

of Mind’ programme, we encourage the girls to try something new, apply their knowledge, work together,

think flexibly, learn from experiences and respond with awe and wonder. There are lots of examples of these

skills within the pages of the Review, as well as many of the others 'habits’ too. Congratulations to the staff and pupils of Hesketh House on yet another excellent year, thank you for all your efforts!

Ambassadors The team of Ambassadors help out with school life and reflect the values of Hesketh House: respect, honesty, kindness, resilience and responsibility. Every pupil in Year 6 has the opportunity to serve as an

Ambassador for one term and the girls take on their additional duties

with enthusiasm. Ambassadors welcome guests to Hesketh House on Open Morning and

provide interesting guided tours which give an insight into what it’s like

to be a pupil. They are also young leaders, helping out teachers when needed and providing girls lower down the school with role models.

Music and Drama

Assembly Music The girls’ musical talents were shared throughout the year in morning assemblies and informal concerts.

Alice the Musical The Summer Production of 'Alice the Musical’ took the audience on a whirlwind tour of Wonderland, following Alice’s adventures down the rabbit-hole and introducing a host of fantastical characters through music, song and dance.

Edith’s Wartime Scrapbook The Year 6 play looked back at the Second World War through the eyes of Edith, an elderly woman reflecting on her younger days. The moving story of how the war affected her family revealed life on the front lines, rationing at home, the roles of ARP Wardens, the Home Guard and 'Women at War’ and much more!

Music Festival The Junior Girls’ annual Music Festival was a wonderful celebration of pupils’ musicianship. Unusual instruments this year included

the double bass, saxophone, electric guitar, drum kit and ukulele! The adjudicators were very impressed by the quality of the

performances throughout the two days.

A number of pupils took part in the Ramsbottom Music

Festival. The String Quartet won first place in their category and were invited to play in a special Gala Concert! The Choir and String Orchestra both achieved second place, and three

girls were awarded podium positions in individual categories. The Choir also sang at the AJIS Music Festival.

Special Occasions Athletic Inspiration A visit from Olympic medallist Kelly Massey and

Commonwealth Games athlete Dave Readle helped to inspire girls in Year 5. Both emphasised the importance of working hard, recognising opportunities and seizing them in order to find success.

Careers Carousel Year 6 were joined by their counterparts from the Junior Boys’ School for the annual Alumni Careers Carousel. In a series of interactive sessions, pupils discovered more

about the police force, town planning, event organising and UKFast.

Passage to India Modern Foreign Languages Day was themed around India. Parent and grandparents shared

their culture and knowledge, and even

Magical Lesson To celebrate Harry Potter Book Day, Junior

Girls traded their usual Houses for Hogwarts Houses and competed for points in a

in the library! They had fun trying to guess fantastical creatures through a mixture of

Charades and Pictionary.

Remembrance In a moving assembly led by Year 6, Hesketh House reflected on the heroism, sacrifice and brutality

of the First World War and the origins of 'poppy day’. As well as the traditional two minutes’ silence, framed by the Last Post and Reveille, there were poetry readings and songs.

Paddington’s Adventures Over forty pupils imagined what Paddington might write in his letters to Aunt Lucy for

the Library Writing Competition. Judges were very impressed

with the creativity of all the entries.

Pupils raised over £3,000 to send their teacher to help the charity Retrak in Malawi. On House Day in the Autumn term, they raised £2,195.43 through a sponsored African dance and this was combined with over £1,000 raised on Charities Afternoon the previous summer to smash the fundraising target! sauce. A competition pitted the year groups against one another: Years 5 and 6 won with 153 jars of sauce donated, but Years 3 and 4 were not far behind

with 124 packets of stuffing!

"Once I had committed myself to the trip to Malawi, I knew that it was going to be a very rewarding and inspiring experience, but at the same time an emotional and challenging endeavour. ... I felt so privileged to visit a community in Malawi that Retrak have worked so hard with.

Harvest At harvest time, donations from pupils and their families were collected and

given to Urban Outreach’s Winter Watch campaign.

“There are many experiences I will share with the girls at Hesketh House, but I am particularly proud of the Hesketh House Art Corner we created at Chisomo Children’s Centre. Many of the street children who have suffered abuse or trauma are able to express themselves through art.”

At the end of the year, 125 children joined Mrs Marsden at Jump Extreme and raised £600 towards water for the village in Malawi.

Retrak supports street children in Africa and South America through education, healthcare and shelter, aiming to reintegrate them with families and communities.
