This summer marks the 20th anniversary of the Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institute. Summers at MSAI have influenced countless young artists, fostering a new love for artistic disciplines and helping artists to further hone their artistic talents. The goal of MSAI is to encourage young artists to begin or continue their pursuits in the fine and performing arts. MSAI aims to serve youth from across the state of Mississippi and beyond for our 20th summer in operation. MSAI provides superior art instruction and enrichment for young artists of many ages, beginning with age 5 and continuing all the way to graduating high school seniors. Campers ages 5-11 attend PLUS Camp, a week-long, performance-oriented day camp packed with engaging lessons and hands-on activities. Campers ages 12-18 further develop their artistic skills at our two-week, track-focused, residential CORE Arts program. Both programs will feature final showcases that demonstrate the hard work and dedication of our young artists. This summer at MSAI, we’re looking to the future of the arts in the lives of our children. We’ll be experimenting with new, technologically innovative classes like webseries production, and will give campers and parents alike the opportunity to engage with MSAI throughout the year by launching a digital gallery in honor of our 20th summer.

our mission: The Bologna Performing Arts Center brings together artists and audiences to celebrate the arts, to enrich the cultural life of the Delta community, to educate and deepen the appreciation of the arts, and to explore the richness of our world heritage through artistic expression.
The Mississippi Summer Arts Institute is located at the Bologna Performing Arts Center on the beautiful Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi. Delta State University is a public institution that provides a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate curriculum to over 4,000 students representing every state in the U.S. and more than 20 countries. DSU is accredited to award bachelor, master, educational specialist, and doctorate degrees. While the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are the oďŹƒcial mascot, the student-adopted Fighting Okra is a unique mascot that is gaining national attention. The Bologna Performing Arts Center (BPAC) at Delta State University has earned recognition as one of the premier houses for entertainment and arts in Mississippi and the Southeast. Built in 1994, the state-of-the-art facility offers a rich tapestry of cultural and educational programs to serve the entire Mississippi Delta. The center attracts quality programming, superb artists and powerful performances to enrich, entertain, and strengthen our Delta community.
ARTS
June 4-17, 2017 CORE Arts tracks teach campers the importance of process and product—the journey and the destination. Campers will leave CORE Arts with a sense of completion, pride, and immeasurable experience. Residential Track: Ages 12-18 (rising 7th graders
CORE Arts aims to create a space through graduating high school seniors) in which emerging artists can Optional Non-residential Track: Ages 12-13 explore their dreams, unleash (rising 7th & 8th graders) their imagination, and discover their talents. CORE Arts provides a positive and supportive environment for students who wish to gain exposure to the arts or aim to further develop their creative abilities. Each day, campers will immerse themselves in the courses of their selected tracks and electives. This framework will sharpen their creative abilities as they receive personal critique, and look ahead to crafting a finished product—all while learning from their artistic peers and professional arts instructors. Tracks offer a tremendous opportunity for discipline-specific, individualized instruction, with a faculty-student ratio of approximately 1:10.

Participants must be 12 years of age or older to stay in the campus dormitories Cost: $750, An all-inclusive fee that provides the following: • all art supplies • lodging accommodations • all meals • weekend field trips • MSAI t-shirt
Non-residential Track (ages 12-13)
Cost: $650, excludes the cost of lodging • Camper and parent/guardian are responsible for off-campus housing • Campers are required to attend all daily camp activities, beginning with breakfast and ending after the evening activity, as well as all weekend excursions and activities
Scholarship Information
Partial scholarships for the residential Core Arts program are available and will be awarded based on financial need and artistic merit. Scholarship Application deadline: April 7, 2017 Scholarship applicants will be notified of decisions by April 21, 2017. *Please see page 11 for details regarding application requirements. A non-refundable application fee of $75, included in the total price, is due with your application. Applications due: May 26, 2017, or until space is full.
C0RE Arts Classes
Morning courses for CORE Arts 2017 will be divided into discipline-specific tracks. By focusing student talent and interest on a single artistic discipline during the morning blocks, students will leave CORE Arts camp with an intimate knowledge of working within their chosen artistic specialty, providing an in-depth understanding and immersive take on their selected field. Campers will also have the option to sign up for afternoon electives outside of their track disciplines. Tracks and electives are selected by campers on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers are encouraged to sign up early to guarantee track choices, due to limited capacities in certain tracks. The following tracks are tentatively planned for 2017:
DIGITAL ARTS TRACK: Have you ever wondered
how Miranda Sings became YouTube famous? What about the scripts used for camera work? In the digital arts track, CORE Arts campers will learn about elements of webseries production, from camera work to script-writing to acting to editing. The final product? Why, a web series of their own making, of course!
FINE ARTS TRACK:
What about the artists who love the classics, who like to rewind and brush up on the refined artistic elements of the Old School? Then the Fine Arts track is for you! We bring it back to basics with a sampling of different classes, including a morning studio block of ceramics.
PERFORMING ARTS TRACK:
Then, there are the artists who crave the spotlight. Curtain up, mints unwrapped, and all attention turned to you, standing on stage and ready to pull belly-laughs and tears from audience members lucky enough to witness your performance. The performing arts track will focus on stage presence, with an intensive morning dance track that can be supplemented with voice and acting electives in the afternoon! Note that some dance experience is preferred for this track. A dance elective will be offered for novice dance performers in the afternoon.
MIXED MEDIA TRACK: We haven’t forgotten about the artists who like to get their hands dirty. The ones who bend and shape and break to create. In our mixed media track, your morning courses will focus on sculpture. A smattering of graphic design, acting, or fine arts electives await you in the afternoon block. The longer studio scheduling will allow students the time to craft pieces they can truly be proud of once their two weeks are up!

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Core Arts wants to keep campers engaged beyond the classroom, so we provide evening and weekend activities that campers can get excited about! A complete schedule of activities will be distributed to the campers during orientation. Tentatively planned activities in the calendar of events include:

Campers will stay on campus in Delta State housing that is supervised, single-sex, and secure. Students will be placed two per room based on grade and age level and may request a roommate. Each residence hall has a Residence Hall Director and Resident Assistants that live in the building. MSAI counselors are housed in the dorms with their campers. The ratio of campers to counselors is approximately 10:1. DSU Dining services will provide campers with three meals a day. Campers will form long-lasting ties outside of their classrooms by living, eating, and socializing together on Delta State’s campus.

C0RE Arts Finale
CORE Arts culminates with a mixed media and fine arts exhibition on Friday, June 16, and a final performance Saturday morning. This camper showcase is the highlight of our final week, and has garnered so much support from campers and parents alike that MSAI invites the entire community to the Bologna Performing Arts Center to congratulate the campers on their hard work!

CORE Arts concludes with a Final Performance on the main stage of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. This live performance consists of short concerts, scenes, and performances developed by the dance, acting, and music classes.

July 17-22, 2017 | Ages 5-11 (rising kindergartners through rising 6th graders) It’s our 20th Anniversary! Join us for a oneweek, performance-oriented day camp where campers will learn a choreographed medley of songs. Campers in every age group will attend classes in Musical Song and Dance, Painting, Ceramics, Singing, and Illustration. We look forward to hosting campers who will greatly contribute to the future of the arts! Campers will be organized into three age groups: 5-6 year olds, 7-8 year olds, and 9-11 year olds. Our youngest campers get a rest period, and all campers get an outside play break during the day. All campers are a part of the final presentation that is held for the public on the stage of the Delta and Pine Land Theatre in the Bologna Performing Arts Center. MSAI is proud to nurture and promote the creativity of young artists in our region, and aims to provide a space for all emerging artists to explore their talents.

Daily Schedule Monday-Friday, July 17-21, 2017
Campers meet for classes MondayFriday, 8:30am – 3:30pm. Daily drop-off is from 8:00-8:25, and camp begins promptly at 8:30am! Don’t be dressy; you’ll get messy! Young artists should wear clothing that can sustain a stain or two as they create their artistic pieces. Also, please have your camper wear closed-toed shoes appropriate for dancing and ease of movement. A mid-morning snack is provided during the weekdays, and campers must bring their own sack lunch daily. A lunch schedule will be provided the first day so that you may come eat with your artist if you wish!

The entire community is invited to come watch our young performing and visual artists on the main stage at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. The campers will perform a song and dance medley that lasts approximately one hour, and showcases all the hard work our PLUS campers have done throughout the week!
