The use of highly hard-wearing materials prolongs

the lifespan of Bolidt’s flooring systems. Resistance against penetration of chemicals such as fuels and lubricants is important for the environment and for good cleaning. Parking deck

Ramp indoor Indoor ramps are heavily loaded because cars drive at an angle, break and accelerate. For this reason, the floor finish must be very wear resistant and slip resistant. A good and easy to clean surface contributes to a fresh and clean appearance.

Ramp outdoor The access to the parking facility, the ramp, takes quite a beating.

The floor surface is exposed to rain, frost and other weather conditions.

Aggressive materials such as de-icing salt are driven inside from the public roads. Given the wet Dutch climate, an extremely slip resistant wearing layer is needed. Due to the slope, the mechanical loading is very high. Because repairs to ramps impede the access, Bolidt advises a very durable and resistant wearing layer.

Parking zones Approximately two thirds of the surface of a parking deck is parking spaces. The spaces can be indicated with coloured lines or contrasting coloured surfaces. This is where the feeling of safety begins. As soon as users leave their cars, a light colour can contribute to this. The colour layers must also be wear resistant and easy to clean. A proper impermeability and chemical resistance are essential. Leaking fuel, lubricating oil and other liquids cannot penetrate, damage or contaminate the under layer.

Both the top parking layer and the open intermediate layers in a parking facility can be considered to be parking decks. These decks are exposed to intense weather influences such as rain and frost. The top parking deck suffers the most, but the intermediate layers are also exposed due to the open sides. Durable and slip resistant wearing layers are needed here. Cracks can be combated with elastic and watertight membrane systems (according to NEN 1928) with crack bridging properties (according to NEN 1062-7). These bridge existing or new cracks, without tearing and allowing liquids through.

Lane Parking facilities consist partly of lanes which lead the cars to the parking spots. Safety is of primary importance here. The lanes need to be slightly slip resistant to prevent skidding. Locations which need extra attention are slightly sloping ramps, bends and wet zones. The floor should be anti-slip and should prevent squealing tyres. High wear resistance is essential and to maintain a fresh appearance the floor needs to be easy to clean. A light colour creates an accessible and friendly impression.

Lane at barrier The lane before, under and behind the barrier at a parking facility also take a beating. Due to cars continually stopping and accelerating, the loading is extreme. That requires extra attention for the floor system.

Facilities areas Parking roof A parking roof is a parking layer on top of functional spaces such as offices, houses or shops. Parking roofs have exceptional additional requirements, such as heat insulation and a reduction of contact noise.

Floors that can withstand a car In more than 50 years, Bolidt has built up a wealth of expertise in the (continued) development of floor finishes especially for car parks. The company offers full in-house expertise: Not only does Bolidt develop, test and manufacture floors, it also installs and maintains them.

Peter Staal, manager Parking & Infra at Bolidt, tells us about the speciality and success.

Bolidt has been developing innovative synthetic floor finishes for, for instance, car parks ever since the company was set up in 1964. Over the years, the company introduced a number of innovations and it made a significant contribution to improving the quality and durability of car parks. From the start, for instance, ramps were given a synthetic wear-resistant layer which was integrated with a floor heating system. This enabled users to access the car park safely during the winter too. The synthetic floor finishes of Bolidt also made a significant contribution to the other perception of car parks. A Bolidt floor is easy to clean, it looks friendly and warm and as such it gives a car park a bit of a homely feel. Bolidt’s flooring systems have also increased safety in car parks thanks to their strong non-skid properties.

High level of wear resistance The durability of floors in car parks has improved immensely thanks to the use of synthetics. The synthetic floor finishes used by Bolidt in car parks are much more hard-wearing than traditional systems.

For a floor’s texture - which is required for safety reasons - Bolidt uses materials with very high levels of wear resistance. Instead of sand, which wears relatively quickly, Bolidt uses much more durable infill materials.

According to Peter Staal, durability is not just a case of the wear resistance of the materials. It also means you have to install the right system in the right place.

Staal: “We divide car parks into areas. They include the interior and exterior ramps, the parking areas, the traffic lanes and the lifts and shafts. The floor loads in each of these zones differ significantly from each other. A ramp, for instance, is exposed to greater loads than a parking area. Our floors are designed for that.”

Using the Boligrip® brand name, Bolidt has developed several floors that are geared to the floor load in the specific areas. The Boligrip® 50 R system,

for instance, is perfect for intensive traffic. The Boligrip® 50 P was developed especially for braking and parking cars and, therefore, it is highly suitable for parking spaces. The durable Boligrip® WH system was devised for ramps. The special thing about Boligrip® floors is that they can be installed faster (often in a single day) than traditional flooring systems. This will reduce nuisance and inconvenience to a minimum.

Close collaboration with clients According to Staal, the combination of different flooring systems of Bolidt will, ultimately, result in the best floor in terms of durability and maintenancefriendliness. “We work closely alongside the client by looking at the most suitable solutions in advance.

A good example is the Vredeburg P5 car park underneath the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht, which has a floor area of 50,000 m2 that accommodates 1,300 parking spaces. Bolidt was asked to come up with ideas about a suitable floor finish at an early stage. Together with the client, we selected the appropriate systems for the various areas in the car park, thus realising the best floor.”

According to Staal, Bolidt works closely with clients, also when it comes to the design of a car park.

“The Boligrip® systems are available in many colours, which enables a client to create a specific atmosphere in his car park as he sees fit. We can make recommendations to the client, creating a car park that not only has a hard-wearing floor but that also offers a pleasant perception of the space.”

Everything in-house What typifies Bolidt is that all expertise of car park floors can be found under a single roof.

That means that flooring systems are developed in-house. Bolidt has a laboratory where it creates and tests synthetic floor finishes. Bolidt also uses the knowledge it has gained during the development of

synthetic floor finishes for other branches of industry. Bolidt’s flooring systems are suitable for various applications, including infrastructure. The floors of car parks are partially based on the knowledge and experience gained during the development and installation of highly durable wearing courses for roads and bridges.

Long-term maintenance contracts After having installed a floor in a car park, Bolidt will continue to be involved in the technical maintenance thereof. According to Staal, clients often worry about floor maintenance. Bolidt removes those concerns by offering long-term maintenance contracts of 10 to 25 years.

Staal: “During this period, we often conduct maintenance inspections. Our own teams carry out technical maintenance so that the parking floor stays in a good condition. That is why more and more clients prefer to leave the maintenance of their car park floors to us.”

The Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht is being completely modernised and expanded with an additional 35,000 m2 of retail space.

Included in the renovation is the construction of the Vredenburg P5 car park: a five-level underground facility. The existing car park had two parking levels and already was one busiest car parks in the Netherlands. With the increase in Hoog Catharijne’s retail space, Vredenburg P5 will be used even more intensively. The parking surfaces must, therefore, be long-term resistant to high volumes of vehicle and foot traffic.

That is why real estate company Klépierre chose the Boligrip® flooring systems. These extremely hard-wearing synthetic floor finishes from Bolidt have been specially developed for different parts of the Vredenburg P5 car park, making them user friendly and very attractive in terms of maintenance.

The Hoog Catharijne shopping centre will be entirely renewed: brighter and more spacious thanks to a transparent design with ample use of glass, high ceilings and outside views throughout. The new shopping centre will also be better connected to the city centre and Utrecht Central Station. The renovation is needed to ensure that the development of shopping facilities in the centre keeps pace with the increasing number of inhabitants. When finished, Hoog Catharijne will have 67,000 m2 of retail space; an expansion of 35,000 m2.

Large display cabinet The now open Vredenburg P5 car park under Hoog Catharijne and Vredenburg square is ultra modern: the building features a LED system that guides motorists to vacant spaces. Another interesting feature is the large display cabinet containing remnants of Vredenburg Castle. The underground facility has a 1,300 car capacity.

Bolidt was involved at an early stage to advise on the most suitable type of flooring, which had to be long-term resistant to heavy vehicle and foot traffic.

Klépierre selected the Boligrip® flooring systems on the grounds of durability. These extremely hard-wearing synthetic floor finishes from Bolidt

offer triple functionality: they protect the concrete underneath, improve safety due to their slip resistance and are highly aesthetic. The Boligrip® flooring systems were installed in both the entrance tunnel to Vredenburg P5 and on the car park floors.

Bolidt supplied and installed a total of 50,000 m2 of floor finish in every space of the car park, including the entry and exit points and the technical rooms.

Tailored to intensity of use In order to best meet the requirements in each part of a car park, Bolidt has developed a range of specific synthetic floor finishes. The finishes for Vredenburg P5 were chosen based on the intensity of use. The part of the car park that is subject to the highest levels of stress, the entrance tunnel and entrance area, was surfaced with Boligrip® WR. This robust and extremely durable floor finish is easy to clean, provides excellent grip and is guaranteed not to require any major maintenance work for 15 years.

Because of its high water storage capacity, Boligrip® WR was also installed on the exterior ramp.

Bolidt installed a variety of versions of the Boligrip® flooring systems in the other parts of the car park. The finish chosen for the lowest level was a purpose developed damp-open version of the Boligrip® 50 system. This flooring system allows any ground water vapour from below to evaporate, thus preventing the synthetic floor from blistering. At the same time, its surface is impermeable to harmful liquids, such as petrol, diesel and windscreen washer fluid. This keeps the concrete in optimum condition.

Finally, all the floors at the entry and exit points were finished with the aesthetic Boligrip® FiftyFifty system, because this floor finish has an attractive appearance and is easy to keep clean.

Everything under one roof When building a car park in the busy centre of a city, it is essential to have a strict schedule in place. In such a large-scale project, which involves many different parties, every supplier must work to the agreed time and standards. By keeping everything from the development and production to the application of the synthetic flooring systems under one roof, Bolidt is not dependent on third

parties. This also proved a great advantage during the construction of Vredenburg P5. The use of its own specialised application teams not only enabled Bolidt to deliver the desired quality, but also to be flexible when needed and, as a result, to fully meet all the agreements that were made. The project was completed in excellent collaboration with contractor BAM, who was responsible for constructing Vredenburg P5. The working conditions were good and BAM gave Bolidt all the room it needed to do its job. In addition to the flooring systems for the Vredenburg P5 car park, Bolidt also provided the synthetic floor covering for the adjacent largest cycle parking facility in Europe.

Jan Paul Paardekooper, Director of VU-VUmc Parking ACTA car park floor finish contributes to a safe and pleasant experience During the construction of the car park of the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam [ACTA], the main aim was to ensure visitors would feel safe and at ease. In order to achieve this, they contacted Bolidt for a collaboration.

Based on its expertise and experience, Bolidt recommended a number of specific measures to create clarity and to make a concrete contribution to a sense of safety and comfort in the car park.

number of visitors, the 1,500 parking spaces here are generally occupied three times a day. At the time, the car park was built with the aim of giving patients and visitors of the hospital a safe and pleasant feeling. That’s why we opted for dampening, to use light and colours, to have good signposting in place and to make a clear distinction between traffic lanes and parking spaces. We also made the spaces wider so that it’s easier to park.”

ACTA is a joint venture of the dentistry faculties of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. ACTA carries out scientific research, it offers a university education and it provides patient care in the field of dentistry.

From an international point of view, ACTA plays a prominent role in research and education. In addition to training students to become dentists, ACTA Dental Education (ADE) organises postgraduate courses for dentists. ACTA forms a part of the VU-VUmc.

Small difference in height Paardekooper: “Running a parking facility doesn’t mean you have to know everything about systems and materials. Stronger still, we want to know as little as possible about parking and parking floors.

Bolidt came up with excellent ideas about the quality of materials. The idea to distinguish the traffic lanes from the parking spaces was Bolidt’s. When you get out of your car and step on the traffic lane, you literally feel it. There is a slight difference in height, so as a pedestrian, you feel as if you’re walking in a traffic lane. It increases safety awareness.”

Coloured Bolidt flooring serves as visual reference in deepest car park in the Netherlands Four days after the opening of one of the largest buildings in the Netherlands – De Rotterdam – the city of Rotterdam broke another record. The Kruisplein underground car park opposite Rotterdam’s renovated Central Station is the deepest car park in the Netherlands. Bolidt’s application specialists worked up to 20 metres below sea level to provide the five parking levels with a sturdy surface course including several colour features.

Comfortable parking in the heart of the city Construction firm Besix began this sizable project more than four years ago. The car park, with spaces for 760 cars over five levels, was completed at the end of November 2013. City architect Maarten Struijs’ design was inspired by Americanstyle parking garages, in which even big trucks can comfortably drive around and park. The size of the car park made it all the more important to help drivers remember where they have parked their car. Struijs incorporated three visual reference points: parking level numbers, photo murals with distinguishing landscapes and parking bays in different colours per level.

Durable surfaces with parking areas in recognisable colours In consultation with Besix, two flooring systems were selected for the Kruisplein car park.

Bolidtop® 200 is a liquid-tight coating with enhanced wear resistance, designed to withstand the damaging effects of turning wheels, oil seepage and

corrosive substances such as road salts. An additional advantage of this system is that it is available in a range of fresh colours, perfect for giving each parking level a recognisable appearance. The parts of the car park that are subject to the heaviest traffic loads, such as the ramps, the tunnel leading into the car park and the roundabout at the entrance, were fitted with Boligrip® 1250. This visco-elastic surface course has been specifically developed for high-volume vehicle traffic, such as can be expected in this 24/7 car park in the bustling centre of Rotterdam.

Vapour-permeable system for the lowest parking level Bolidt fitted the concrete substrate at the very bottom of the car park with a vapour-open system, custom developed in Bolidt’s laboratory by its mechanical engineers, chemists, construction physicists and application specialists. The breathable coating allows ground water vapour from below to exit freely and, at the same time, is impermeable to harmful liquids on top of it. The concrete therefore remains in optimum condition and the vapourpermeable layer prevents the synthetic system from blistering. All this ensures that the city of Rotterdam will not have to worry about the car park for many years to come and has a free hand to start a new ground-breaking project.

Kruisplein car park is one of the elements of a large infrastructural project, Rotterdam Central.

The car park fits in with the plans of the Rotterdam local authorities to create an attractive inner city that is easy to reach. The new car park meets growing demand for parking spaces.

Using sound for measurements During the execution, the Rotterdam municipal engineering agency and contractor Besix successfully tested a new method to check the quality of concrete slurry walls using sound.

One potential problem when constructing slurry walls is quality control during the process. This construction method received negative press earlier during the construction of the NorthSouth line in Amsterdam. So as to prevent similar problems, engineers of the municipal engineering agency applied a new measuring technology. Weak areas in the walls can be detected by using 50 kHz sound waves during construction. This method was tested in the Kruisplein car park.

Effective method The acoustic measurements took place by slowly pulling up transmitters and receivers through a pipe that was attached to the reinforcement cage. This made it possible to scan the full 41 metres of the slurry wall. The engineering agency also studying other measuring methods, such as using temperature and electric resistance. The use of sound waves proves not only to be highly effective but also relatively inexpensive. This method is now also being used for the construction of the railway tunnel in Delft.

SCENT ADDS TO SENSE OF COMFORT

Garages: more than just a space to park The car park is more important than you might think in the customer experience. It’s where it all starts and it’s where it all ends. It has an integral part to play in a comfortable user experience.

There’s a number of ways that the parking lot can be enhanced to accommodate for the comforts of the user. Some of them are direct solutions to problems that might be faced when it comes to maintenance and cleanliness.

Unfortunately, parking lots can often be devoid of toilets, which, even more unfortunately, can lead to rather messy circumstances. Such a circumstance consists of some very vulgar smells. To make things worse, parking lots are notoriously difficult to ventilate. So how to approach such a problem? No one wants to start or end their weekly shop with ‘essence of toilette’ in their nostrils. Hundreds of parking lots have been seeking a solution to this sticky situation, and many have succeeded.

Also not your traditional parking lot is Bjarke Ingel’s ‘Mountain’. In a country where hills are as uncommon as space aliens, The Mountain adds an interesting dynamic to the landscape. It’s a multi-storey car park that houses an entire slope of penthouses. The carpark becomes an integrated living space, rather than a single functioning tower block.

There’s no doubt that the function of the car park is expanding. One purpose structures that depress more than they elevate are a thing of the past. Now the challenge is to create a space that serves more than just as a space for your car.

The use of scents has been incorporated into the maintenance of the building. It adds to the sense of comfort and cleanliness. Plus, it actually lessens the probability of such a situation taking place. If it smells clean, people are less likely to reoffend. It’s a win-win!

However, whilst cleanliness is important, the purpose of the fragrance goes beyond this. It contributes to the overall experience of the user.

For instance, in spring, there might be an application of floral scents. Whilst in the festive season there might be a fragrance of pine trees to encourage those Christmassy feelings.

Another way parking lots are being revitalized is through art. The perception of an ugly concrete block with no personality is being pulled apart piece by piece. A lot can be done with lighting alone, but now art murals can be seen reshaping the atmosphere of car parks. Maph Paint Productions is a company that specialize in bringing such spaces to life.

Car park remains open during application of new parking system

Having to close your business for the application of a new parking system means loss of revenue. This is particularly true in the case of a car park. After already having applied parking systems there before, Bolidt was approached for another project in underground car park De Nieuwe Markt.

This resulted in the development of a customised Boligrip® W system, which was applied in a single day.

A new parking system in just one day An important requirement from the client, Roosendaal Parking Authority, was for the new system to be ready for use within the shortest time possible. This inspired Bolidt to purposedevelop a new version of its Boligrip® W system for the project. The special version was applied in just one day, a new record. The car park remained operational and customers experienced minimal disruption.

Parking system determines atmosphere in car park Since the parking system makes up a large part of the visible surface, it plays a major role in determining the appearance of a car park. Bolidt can offer advice on this too. Coloured lining, parking bays in contrasting colours and clearly marked pedestrian routes were used to create an atmosphere, in which visitors feel safe and can easily find their way.

Parking systems matched to stress loads on the substrate Each zone in a car park requires its own type of parking system. The special version of the Boligrip® W system, with the same qualities as the regular Boligrip® W system, was applied in the zones of the car park that are subject to the highest stress loads, including the ramps. The parts that are exposed to less stress, such as the parking bays, were covered with the Bolicoat® 50 system. This parking finish was applied directly onto the concrete substrate.

Guaranteed quality Applying a new parking system in just one day should of course never be done at the expense of quality. Bolidt assures this quality by carrying out extensive in-situ grip and adhesion tests. These are conducted under the supervision of Bolidt’s laboratory. The results provide Roosendaal Parking Authority with the guarantee that they have a maintenance-friendly parking system that fully meets their requirements.

Safety comes first at the university medical centre in Nijmegen. For patients of course, but also for the entire medical staff. The Radboudumc approached Bolidt for a largescale renovation of their open-sided staff car park after slippery parking decks and ramps had led to dangerous situations. With the new, non-skid surface courses from Bolidt, the more than 500 parking bays are easily and safely accessible again.

Durable surface course for high-volume vehicle traffic As a top university hospital, the Radboudumc is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This means that the open-sided staff car park is used heavily and continuously.

The original coating had become slippery and was wearing prematurely. This caused dangerous situations, especially in wet and cold weather conditions. Bolidt recommended the application of three different flooring systems. Bolidtop® 200 RF, a coating made of extremely durable synthetic resins, was used for the parking bays. The solid thickness of this system provides enhanced wear resistance and the aggregate it contains produces a slightly slip resistant finish, which increases both vehicle and pedestrian safety. The busy vehicle lanes were fitted with Boligrip® 1250. This highstrength surface layer has a lifespan of 15 years with no maintenance required.

Integrated ramp heating system All the ramps in the staff car park in Nijmegen have been provided with Boligrip® 1250 HR, a special version of the Boligrip® 1250 system. This surface course features an integrated heating system immediately below the surface that can heat the ramps for a short period of time. Ramps are not just subjected to a lot of stress from cars braking, turning and accelerating, but rain or frost may also cause them to become slippery quite suddenly. By heating the ramps temporarily and locally, the surface will still be safe to drive on during periods with frost, ice or snow. The Boligrip® 1250 HR system thus ensures high energy efficiency and safety at the same time.

Efficient renovation during holiday period In consultation with the Radboudumc, the renovation was meticulously planned and carried out efficiently in two phases during a holiday period. This car park was already in use by the hospital staff, so Bolidt wanted to minimise the inconvenience. And managed to do so. The staff will now be able to park again for many years without having to worry about their safety and the hospital has a durable surface layer that is guaranteed to last for a minimum of fifteen years.

The liquid-tight surface does not only protect the structure of this open-sided car park from high levels of mechanical stress, but also from the corrosive effects of road salts and automotive fluids.

Bolidrain® From development to application

In urban areas, where space is limited, roofs are often used to create more surface area.

These roofs mainly serve as parking space but also as a sports field, a terrace or a garden. In that case, the covering of a roof used in this way has to comply with a whole raft of complex requirements. When this layer sits on top of homes, offices or shops, good heat and noise insulation is vital. Impact noise from cars or shopping trolleys should be reduced to a minimum and the heat of the adjacent floor should not be lost. It is also important that fluctuations in temperature or load do not result in leaks. Furthermore, the roofing needs to be lightweight and dimensionally stable.

Uniting these basic requirements - and more - is a complicated matter, also because one requirement directly opposes another.

Complicated but not impossible. Bolidrain® proves just that.

Bolidrain® is a 35 to 60 mm-thick system that acts as a draining wear-resistant layer.

Bolidrain® is used on parking, sports, garden and terrace roofs, on parking decks and on (heated) ramps. The product is derived from porous synthetics, which Bolidt has been using since 1990.

Bolidrain® consists of a combination of liquidhardening synthetic resin with ingenious minerals and anthracite-coloured aggregates. The advantage of the design is an excellent water storage capacity and a very stable structure. Thanks to little impact noise, good sound reduction and heat insulation it is a popular solution for schools, offices and houses and because of the minimum presence of seams, it is used for shopping centres (no obstacles for shopping trolleys). Also, because it is liquid when applied, it can be used in hard-to-reach places. Installation on a pitch is not a problem either.

Bolidt is involved in Bolidrain® at all levels. The development, manufacturing, sales and application all fall under Bolidt’s own management. This ensues from the urge for quality and innovation. After all, Bolidrain® as such is not a new system of Bolidt. We have been using it since the mid to late 1990s. At

the time, it was developed with support from BDA Dakadvies from Gorinchem, among others, after which it went through a number of stages. We then developed a couple of new technologies such as, in particular, the application of C-EPS insulation mortar instead of XPS insulation panels. Bolidrain® is now ready for the future.

When external knowledge is required, Bolidt works with prominent consultancy agencies. The details of a project are determined - and specifically developed, if necessary - in consultation with the client. The ingredients for Bolidrain® are manufactured by ourselves, in accordance with ISO 9001. BDA can fulfil an advisory role in that respect. Bolidt constructs a mobile factory set-up on-site, which safeguards a constant product quality. Good work preparations are vital and Bolidt’s specialists have a lot of experience with the material and an extensive knowledge of the correct application circumstances. As everything is organised by a single company, Bolidt is able to come up with smart ideas for the client. When the company is involved in the development and execution from an early stage, all details can be properly coordinated.

Rooftop carpark Delhaize

Bolidrain® parking system passes strict checks southern neighbours The grass is always greener on the other side. It looks like our southern neighbours are eager to live up to this saying. The Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize makes no secret of its ambitious plans and progressive approach. Delhaize is always looking for and introducing food novelties, contributes to the health of its staff and customers (winning the ‘Partner of Excellence’ award for this in 2009) and goes to particular lengths to offer high-quality products, convenience and service. Checks are performed all along the production chain, also on the composition and quality of the products.

Specialist structural engineering firm recommends Bolidrain® Not just products and production are subject to stringent checks. The asphalt that had been in use for many years, had become a thorn in the side of the ambitious chain due to an endless string of wear issues. A bad rooftop car park is no more acceptable than any other bad product. The grass may be invitingly green, it serves no purpose for high-quality parking. Delhaize is wise enough to call in the professionals when needed and has been using the expertise of Bureau Bouwtechniek for

some time. In view of their specialist knowledge of rooftop car parks, Delhaize was confident that this was exactly the right firm to find them the best and highest quality solution. Their critical eye focussed on Bolidt once more. Once more, because they had already worked with Bolidt in the past on the Inno Bascule project in Ukkel, which had been a very positive experience. For this reason, Bureau Bouwtechniek had no hesitations in presenting the Bolidrain system as the solution that would best fit Delhaize’s requirements. No sooner said than done. After a number of positive conversations, Bolidt could set to work.

Proven quality and innovativeness An excellent match, because Bolidrain also stems from a drive for quality and innovation. Within the space of eight days, 225 tonnes of material was processed in order to apply 2800 m2 of Bolidrain. All of this material was mixed on site and then applied with the paver, a machine that was purpose-developed by Bolidt. As was to be expected, Delhaize kept a close eye on the project.

What is green, should stay green! The material and its composition were subjected to strict quality controls. Regular samples of the material were taken for analysis before it could be applied. The flawless end result proves that Bolidt has passed the checks with flying colours.

Rooftop carpark Boskalis

Boskalis Durable and low-maintenance parking solution Royal Boskalis Westminster NV, Boskalis in short, is a Dutch multinational and with a turnover of more than 3 billion euros it is one of the world’s largest dredging groups.

Boskalis’ main activities are land reclamation, the construction and maintenance of ports and waterways as well as coastal defence and riverbank protection. Boskalis is based in Papendrecht where the extension of its headquarter complex is an ongoing process.

The functional properties of the floor finish for driving lanes are thus very different from those of the flooring system for parking bays.

Durable and easy to maintain Boskalis is growing and a fourth office building was added to its headquarter complex in 2014. The new building provides additional workspace for 450 staff, leading to the need for more parking capacity.

That is why Boskalis decided to have a three-storey car park built with spaces for 753 cars. As Boskalis aims for durability, a durable and easy-to-maintain construction out of concrete instead of steel was chosen. Concrete is solid and besides having an architectonic quality, it is fire resistant and virtually maintenance free.

Three types of floor finish The car park decks were surfaced with three different types of floor finish. The Boligrip® WR system was installed on the driving lanes. This durable and robust flooring system is perfectly suited to withstand the (high) traffic load in the car park.

The parking bay areas are subjected to completely different kinds of stress and were surfaced with the Boligrip® 200 P system. This flooring system is not only wear resistant, but also highly resistant to the damaging effects of turning wheels, fluid seepage and corrosive substances such as road salts. An additional advantage is that it reduces the ‘squeaking noise’ made by tyres to a minimum.

Finally, the durable and water draining Boligrip® WH system was used to surface the ramps.

Parking surfaces The surfacing material for the floors of the opensided car park also had to meet the requirements of durability and easy maintenance. This is what brought Bolidt into the picture. Combining its knowledge and skills in car park surfacing with extensive expertise and decades of experience with surface courses on bridges and roads throughout

Comfortable and safe The floor finishes that were applied at Boskalis all comply with the NEN 2443 standard, consisting of a series of functional and performance requirements as well as recommendations for the design of parking facilities. Due to their long life, the systems are low maintenance and very durable. They require virtually no attention. Experience has shown that

there are no specific requirements apart from regular maintenance to maintain the functional properties of the flooring. This is not just interesting from a financial perspective, but also benefits users.

They will not have to face the inconvenience of maintenance work. In addition, the car park is safe for pedestrians. The floor finishes are slip resistant, minimising the risk of falls and slips.

Technologies that will change parking The automotive industry is racing ahead at the speed of light. As society begins to embrace the benefits of electrical energy in driving, other elements of the automotive industry take similar turns towards efficiency and brilliance. As this evolution continues, the logistics of parking comes into question. Here are three parking innovations that will transform the face of a parking space.

Fully Automated Parking Garages Whilst it may still seem like a distant fantasy to some of us who are all too familiar with scouring five stories of a parking lot for a single space, the development of fully automated parking is in full swing. Automated parking has been around for decades, and in that time it has developed in leaps and bounds. Particularly the control technology at hand.

The one element that’s been holding back this sector is the waiting time. Sure, you don’t have to spend time scouting out a space, but on the other hand you do have to wait several minutes for the machine to load your car. This problem, however, is soon to be of the past. A parking innovation in Aarhus, Denmark, has the capacity of storing 1000 vehicles at once. At its peak, the system takes only two minutes between ticket and loading. This is four times faster than the average waiting time for a traditional parking garage.

That’s right! Charging on-the-go. Rather than a necessary six hour park and charge, cars would rarely need to stop for the sake of charging. The vision is that wireless charging for electric vehicles will be as accessible and widespread as wifi is today. It’s already being piloted by some community bus systems.

This technology could potentially overcome the current issues of plug-in charging infrastructure holding us back from mass adoption. Electric vehicle drivers will be able to charge their batteries as they go about their daily business; parking on charging pads in parking spots and what not.

Self-Parking cars One major change that will take place is that there will be less of them. The parking innovation of selfparking cars will allow a much more efficient use of available space. Thus, a new generation of parking infrastructure can take place. Whilst we don’t know exactly what it will look like, we know that it will take up a fraction of the space which it takes up today.

To give you an idea of just how much parking will change, companies are studying automated garages with a capacity of up to 3000 cars. What makes it all the more astounding is that automated parking spaces can fit 40 to 60 percent more cars in the same volume of space. The systems have the ability to measure the height of the car, and place it in an according level of the car park. Without the need for human access, some of the levels are only 180 centimeters high.

To get into specifics, the average space required for a car in a traditional parking garage is about 30 square meters. This includes, for instance, the ramps that connect the different levels. So the space needed for 100 cars would be equal to 3,000 square meters of concrete. With self-parking cars, up to 30 percent of that space could be saved. When you consider how much of our city scape is taken up by parking, it hints at just how much it could change the face of our cities. The architecture will transform in dynamic, becoming smaller and more cost effective.
