YY"Humpback whales sing", asserts Óscar Ortiz, founder of the tour operator Cabo Expeditions in Cabo San Lucas. "The echo of their deep song travels far underwater". Each year between December and April, humpback and gray whales leave the Arctic to reproduce in this warmer part of the Pacific. Óscar organizes tours to observe them and listen to their incredible songs through a hydrophone as the sun sets.

YYJust one hour’s drive north from Cabo San Lucas, you will find the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve. There, in a canyon known as Boca de la Sierra, are the Cabo Adventures zip-lines.

The circuit challenges you to cross a suspension bridge, abseil and scale a stone wall. The longest zip line, stretching over 4,000 feet, is saved for last!

YYThe town of Todos Santos is nestled 148 miles north of Cabo San Lucas. It is surrounded by desert, but also boasts expansive beaches adored by surfers. Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keefe could well have lived here: between the cacti and fruit trees. There are foreigners, hippies and artists everywhere, enjoying the frequent festivals, excellent restaurants and inviting atmosphere.

Cada año, ballenas jorobadas y grises abandonan el Ártico para reproducirse, entre diciembre y abril, en esta parte más cálida del Pacífico. Óscar organiza tours para observarlas o escuchar al atardecer, por medio de un hidrófono, sus asombrosos cantos.

YYBasta una hora en coche desde Cabo San Lucas hacia el norte para acceder a la Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra La Laguna. Ahí, en un cañón conocido como Boca de la Sierra, se hallan las tirolesas de Cabo Adventures. El circuito exige atravesar un puente colgante, hacer rapel y escalar una pared de piedra. La tirolesa más larga, estirada a lo largo de 1,221 metros, se reserva para el final.

YYA 238 kilómetros al norte de Cabo San Lucas aparece el pueblo de Todos Santos. Está rodeado de desierto, pero también de alargadas playas buscadas por surfistas. Bien pudieron haber vivido aquí Ansel Adams y Georgia O’Keefe: entre cactáceas y árboles frutales. Hay extranjeros, hippies y artistas por todas partes. Se llevan a cabo festivales. Los restaurantes son buenos, la atmósfera acogedora.

Their boat has space up to ten anglers and you can catch dorado, sailfish and blue marlin; all emblematic species which swim in these fertile waters. You will sail out from the Marina El Cid, which also offers crafts for rent if you prefer to sail in your own boat.

YYFrom Mazatlán’s coastline, you will see three islands on the horizon. This is a small archipelago formed by Isla Pájaros, Isla Lobos and Isla Venados. To get there, you must take a guided tour. They will provide you with equipment to kayak or snorkel during your trip. All around you, you will see birds and sea lions.

YYHelp the conservation of the Olive Ridley Turtle by visiting its most important nesting area in northwestern Mexico: El Verde Camacho Sanctuary, 24 miles from Mazatlán. The sanctuary is very near to the mangrove forests of the Meseta de Cacaxtla Natural Protected Area, so spotting lizards, herons, hawks, deer and hares is always a possibility. If you visit between July and November, you can watch the incredible sight of thousands of baby turtles hatching and scuttling down the beach towards the sea.

YYThere are two picturesque towns north of Mazatlán that are must-sees: El Quelite and La Noria. The former is known for its emblematic local architecture and the charrería (rodeo) shows that its inhabitants enjoy so much. The latter is a settlement with colonial houses, an old saddlery and leather workshops. There, artisan families have been crafting sandals, bags and belts for generations.

YYMazatlán fue fundado en el siglo xvi como puerto de vigilancia y embarque, lo que propició su desarrollo y enriquecimiento durante las siguientes tres centurias. Ejemplo de ello son su Catedral de inspiración gótica, así como el neoclásico Teatro Ángela Peralta. Ambos se ubican en el Viejo Mazatlán, donde también está la Plazuela Machado. De noche, esa explanada se ilumina y llena de vida a causa de los bares, restaurantes y músicos que la frecuentan.

YYSube al Cerro del Crestón, al atardecer, para tener una vista panorámica de la bahía mazatleca. Después camina de sur a norte por el largo Malecón —también puedes tomar una “pulmonía” o taxi abierto— hacia la Zona Dorada. Reconocerás la silueta morisca del club nocturno Valentino’s ni bien te acerques a él, pues aparece en muchas postales del puerto. Es el sitio predilecto de fiesteros y noctámbulos.

YYAgenda un día de pesca deportiva con la naviera Aries, en cuyas embarcaciones —con capacidad hasta para diez anglers— podrás capturar dorados, peces vela y marlín azul; especies propias de estas generosas aguas. Zarparás hacia la aventura desde la Marina El Cid, que también ofrece muelles en renta por si prefieres navegar en un bote propio.

YYDesde la línea costera de Mazatlán verás en el horizonte tres islas, un pequeño archipiélago formado por Isla Pájaros, Isla Lobos e Isla Venados. Para llegar a ellas es necesario contratar un recorrido con guías, quienes te brindarán equipo para hacer kayak o esnórquel en el trayecto. En las cercanías verás aves y lobos marinos.

YYColabora con la conservación de la tortuga golfina visitando su zona de anidación más importante del noroeste de México: el Santuario El Verde Camacho, a 38 kilómetros de Mazatlán.

Está muy cerca de los manglares del Área Natural Protegida Meseta de Cacaxtla, por lo que divisar lagartos, garzas, halcones, venados y liebres siempre es una posibilidad. Si acudes entre julio y noviembre podrás atestiguar la eclosión y carrera al mar de miles de tortuguitas.

YYHay dos pintorescos pueblos al norte de Mazatlán que deberías visitar: El Quelite y La Noria. El primero destaca por su arquitectura vernácula y los espectáculos de charrería que tanto disfrutan sus habitantes. El segundo es un poblado de casas coloniales y viejos talleres de talabartería. Ahí, las familias de artesanos elaboran desde siempre sandalias, bolsas y cinturones de piel.

Acapulco Acapulco’s heyday was in the mid-20th century, when Hollywood stars would gather every so often on its The beaches. YYCheck out the Tulum Archaeological Site. It’s a Maya city that reached its peak around 1200 of the common era, and was inhabited until the arrival of the Spanish. Situated on a cliff facing the sea, its well-preserved buildings and murals are amazing. The main temple, El Castillo, was used for ceremonial purposes but also served as a lighthouse. That’s because Tulum’s inhabitants were seafarers and merchants who maintained trade relations with the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula and Central America.

YYThere are extensive agave plantations in some parts of the state of Zacatecas. That’s the pointy-leaved plant used to make mezcal. In the Craft Market, an Aladdin’s cave of lamps, mirrors, pieces of pottery and papier-mâché creations await. This city was founded in 1542 by Franciscan monks. Here, it is customary for the bride and groom to take to the streets in a joyful procession, accompanied by their guests, musicians and huge cardboard dolls called mojigangas.

YYA solo 30 minutos de la capital oaxaqueña se ubica Matatlán, un valle salpicado por las principales fábricas de mezcal del estado. Para conocer la forma en que se produce ese destilado de agave, reserva un tour con degustación incluida. YYMake a day trip to Izamal. Its name means "dew that descends from the heavens" in the Mayan language. While there’s no dew, and it’s definitely not falling, the atmosphere of this town is every bit as poetic as its name. Yellow house fronts and cobblestone streets. Life here is centered around the Convent of San Antonio de Padua and its enormous colonnaded atrium. Nearby, you’ve got Casa de los Santos, a perfumery and religious art shop that also serves as hotel; and Kinich, a restaurant serving up Yucatán delights.

YYYou have to see Chichén Itzá, a former Mayan city located 75 miles east of Mérida, on the way to Cancún. Now considered a unesco World Heritage Site, the city reached its golden age in the ninth century of the common era. Its impressive palaces and buildings—such as the Pirámide del Castillo, Templo de los Guerreros and Templo de las Mil Columnas—and its innovative construction techniques continue to amaze even to this day.

YYValladolid is a colonial city located some 28 miles past Chichén Itzá. Step inside its Church of San Servacio. Walk down Calzada de los Frailes to Convent of San Bernardino de Siena.

Along the way you’ll pass hats, fine hammocks and cotton shirts for sale, as well as the perfume shop Coqui Coqui and the exclusive Mesón de Malleville. Have a bite to eat at Taberna de los Frailes. Leave time for checking out the more than 3,000 handicrafts from all over Mexico, on display at Casa de los Venados.
