Letter from the Editor

It was around this time last year when I met Darla in a coffee shop near downtown Indy. Now with four outstanding issues under my belt as an editor, I have been challenged to write the editorial. UH OH, write? The first thoughts that came to mind when Darla asked were a few Eminem lyrics from his song "Lose Yourself" that I paraphrased in my mind. My palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms were heavy, I was nervous, but on the surface, I've got to be calm and ready.

Okay, my apologies to young rappers that are reading this issue of BoldlyU. Let's switch gears and talk about Stereotypes. A stereotype is an idea or belief people have about a thing or group based on how it or they look on the outside. Common stereotypes include racial, gender, and cultural profiling. What we must keep in mind is that we are all different. The differences are what make us great and unique. So rather than form an opinion because you have heard a joke, or believe something you've seen on social media, get to know people that are different from you. Who knows, you might make a friend. We hope you enjoy this issue!

Book Review:

ENTERTAINMENT

Whatever After Many people get this series mixed up with the T.V. show and book series “Whatever After High�. While this is a completely different series by a completely different author, both involve fractured fairy tales. Sarah Mylinowski wrote this series, and continues to add books every few months. Right now there are 13 books (counting the special editions) in the series. The books are told by a modern day girl named Abby. She is 11, has a younger brother, and two parents who are both lawyers. Abby reluctantly moves to her new house in Smithville to find a large magic mirror. Abby and Jonas are transported to a magical world. The fairytales Abby and Jonas have visited so far are: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, The Snow Queen, The Frog Prince, Aladdin, Hansel and Gretel, The Princess and the Pea, Little Red Riding Hood,and Jack and the beanstalk. The current special edition is Alice in Wonderland, and soon there will be a Wizard of Oz. From my experience you think you know what's coming, but there are surprising twists in every book. I really hope you will check out this amazing series!

Hanging with my family during holidays It’s that time of year again when my family gets together to celebrate the holidays. First, it’s Thanksgiving which we have at my house. We spend a lot of time making sure our decorations are the best!

We cook all the meat at my house and my cousins bring all the sides. I always look forward to some of the best mac & cheese, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and baked beans ever! One Thanksgiving we visited my brother in Chicago.

We spend Christmas hanging out at my cousins’ house. We play video games, board games, open presents and eat a whole lot of food. I really like the day after Christmas because I can get more gifts during the after Christmas sales at the mall. In the past, my family visited Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, during the holidays. In the future, my family is planning a trip to Disney for the holidays. For me, I can’t wait!!!!

Stardew Valley Tips In the beginning, you will be gifted with 15 parsnip seeds from Mayor Lewis. You can go into town and buy more seeds from Pierre’s General store.

ALWAYS buy stuff from Pierre’s. Joja has the same stuff, but it costs almost TWICE AS MUCH from Joja. Pierre’s are much less money for the same quality.

When you give stuff to Pierre, the other NPCs will say very funny things. If you give him beer, they might say that they bought an awesome beer from him and he said he grew it in his own backyard. They also might say that they tried to cook it for their kids.

Before you can get married to someone, you must upgrade your house.

There are many buildings you can buy from Robin, the town carpenter.

These buildings will allow you to get more money, which is used to upgrade your house and buy seeds.

The more that a seed costs, the better it is. The seeds that cost more will take longer to grow, and some will produce crops multiple times.

Holiday Holiday Treats Treats Holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, especially to my family. Getting together and enjoying each other’s company is the best. My family loves traditions. It’s what I look forward to most during the holidays. Thanksgiving is always over my aunt Pam’s house, and Christmas Eve is always over my house. Let’s be honest, desserts are the best part of the holidays. What’s so special is everybody has a special dish that they make and bring every year. For example, my mom’s cheesecakes, my grandma’s chocolate fudge brownies, or my dad’s and I delicious sugar cookies! I absolutely love making these cookies with my dad. It always puts my family and me in the holiday spirit.

Especially my dad, because it’s our bonding time. So, if you want to make our holiday cookies here’s how you make them: INGREDIENTS For the cut-out sugar cookies: 3 cups All-Purpose Flour*, spooned & leveled 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup All-Vegetable Shortening or 1 all-vegetable Shortening Baking Stick* 1 cup of sugar 1 large egg room temperature 2 tablespoons milk 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract For the icing: 2 cups powdered sugar 2 teaspoons light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract use clear for white icing 3-3.5 tablespoons milk use more or less as needed Food coloring INSTRUCTIONS To make the cookies: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.

2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the All-Purpose Flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a large mixing bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the All-Vegetable Shortening and sugar until well combined. Mix in the egg, milk, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

ENTERTAINMENT 4. Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix until fully combined. The mixture will be a little crumbly at first but it will come together as you continue mixing it.

5. Divide the dough in half. Roll out each half on a lightly floured surface to Âź-inch thick, then cut with 2 to 3-inch cookie cutters. Re-roll any scrap pieces of sugar cookie dough and cut out more cookies as needed. Place the cookies 2-inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.

6. Bake in separate batches at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until the tops of the cookies are set and very lightly browned.

7. Cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

To make the icing: 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, corn syrup, vanilla extract, and milk (start with 3 tablespoons) until well combined. To test the icing, lift the whisk (or spoon) from the mixing bowl, you should still see the ribbons of icing that fall back into the bowl for a few seconds. If needed, add more milk to thin out the icing or add more powdered sugar to make it thicker.

2. Separate the icing into mixing bowls and add food coloring as needed. If the icing becomes thinner because of the food coloring, add a little more powdered sugar until it has reached your desired consistency.

This is one of my favorite recipes to make during the holidays; hopefully, it can become one of yours too! Happy Holidays!

My brot her int roduced me to t he game eight years ago and I’m currently at t he Pro 3 level. My Favorite Holiday Movies During holiday breaks from school, I like to chill, play basketball, video games and watch funny holiday movies. Now I’m sure that there have been hundreds of holiday movies made over the years. But if you really want a good laugh from some funny movies, here is a list of my top 6.

MEET IPS SUPERINTENDENT ALESSIA JOHNSON Hi, I'm Ranya, the student body president at Shortridge and I got the chance to interview Alessia Johnson the Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools!

Ranya: Where did you grow up and what colleges did you attend?

Superintendent Johnson: I grew up in Evansville, Indiana, which is three hours southwest of Indianapolis. I got my undergraduate degree which is a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/African American Studies from Agnes Scott College, a small Women’s college right outside of Atlanta. I also received a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oakland City University.

Ranya: How did you find your way to Indy?

Superintendent Johnson: After two years of teaching in New Jersey, I wanted to get closer to home because my entire family was still in Evansville, but I wanted to be in more of a city rather than my hometown, so Indianapolis was the family compromise in 2004.

Ranya: Did you ever dream of being a Superintendent?

Superintendent Johnson: I dreamed about being a principal before but never a superintendent. Being the Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools is truly an honor!

Ranya: Describe a time when you were stereotyped.

Superintendent Johnson: There was a time when I visited a Dollar General store when I felt like I was racially profiled/stereotyped. I had gone in to buy a bottle of body wash but the store didn't have the brand that I use. I was carrying a large bag and as I was leaving the store, a worker stopped me and asked to search my bag. I hadn't wandered the store, I only walked to one aisle before deciding to leave.

Ranya: How did it make you feel?

Superintendent Johnson: I felt very offended and called management to let them know about my experience. I would never steal, especially out of a Dollar General store. I was angry and needed my concerns addressed.

There was no reason to stop me at all that day. I couldn't help but wonder that the reason the worker stopped me was because I was black.

Ranya: Have you ever faced any issues as being the first black woman superintendent?

Superintendent Johnson: There haven’t been any instances where I feel like someone explicitly discriminated against me because I am a black woman in this position. However, there have been and still, are meetings that I attend where I'm either the only woman or the only person of color. There are also questions as the leader of this organization that I'm asked that I don't know that a male leader would be asked. That is why I believe that as women it is important that we stay strong in leadership roles. It’s too easy for folks to dismiss us and not realize the strength that we bring to our roles.

Ranya: What's a typical day like?

Superintendent Johnson: As a superintendent, there is never really a typical day. In a typical week, I try to spend fifty percent of my time inside the organization and the other fifty percent in the community. Today my schedule started with internal check-in meetings, a meeting with our principal supervisors, and a meeting with our communications chief. I served on a panel at the Indiana State of Black Males Conference and met with two community leaders about the work we’re doing in the district. My goal is to try and always be half and half if possible. Working inside includes dealing with matters and affairs we have going on in our district. The community portion also includes getting various thoughts and perspectives to keep people informed about what is going on in our IPS. Ranya: What's your vision for IPS? Superintendent Johnson: My vision is to accelerate and move very quickly to improve student achievement. We are a school district, so at the end of the day, we are here to make sure that you and every student gets the best education possible so that when you graduate, you are in a position to make choices because of the knowledge, skills, and confidence you've gained in our schools. It's also important to make sure that when people are talking about IPS that the message, story, and images are all positive. We have incredible students and teachers in our district. No, we’re not perfect but I think there are ways to move IPS to a more positive level. My goal is to broadcast and share the awesome things we have in our district. That’s my ultimate vision.

The name of my team is the Jefferson Cyclones and Club Como.

What spor t do you play? Why do you like it?

I play volleyball, and I like it because it’s really fun to play, and you make great friends along the way.

I have a lot of family who plays volleyball and they got me into playing and we play every year at my family New Year’s party with my whole family.

My favorite part of being an athlete the friends you meet.

I would say problem solving because when you’re playing sports it’s all about working together and solving a problem you or your team have made.

Yes, I do have a favorite coach, it’s my coach from my school, coach Rowe. she will always tell you the truth and she will push you so you’re the best you can be and she gives the best advice.

The two stereotypes I get called are fat kid or gamer and just before I talk about these two I’ll talk about stereotypes in general. We ll stereotypes start for judging peop le from there color, what they do or even just speculation on that type of people they are. That is how rac ism started so to put it in simple wo rds, just discrimination, well worth fighting for it, to stop it, it starts wi th you even if you don't discrimina ted. People you can still stop it, jus t like bullying we don’t need it. Lik eI said earlier, I get called the fat kid and a gamer, well that can affect me.

In school under the stigma of gam ers are bad and all a fat people do es is eat, that is wrong! That is just som e of that thing I get called but how did I get over them? Well kin da like bullying, you just don't let it get under your skin, but that basic way to put it is that even if it hurts you, even if it may be rude, don't react to it because they want a response. Here's something I did I regret doing and you should not do it: 1. Don't try to fight or throw a pu nch, I did that and well I made his nose bleed.

2. Don't overreact, look at that exp erience and make yourself a better person!

3. Now this is want you should do , If your being discriminated against you should tell an adult or teacher about it.

Have you ever been judged based on your appearance or hobbies?

Maybe if you like video games som eone has called you a gamer, or maybe if you wear glasses then pe ople might call you a nerd. Hi, my name is Jayleigh and I am 5 '5 1⁄2 , and I'm only in 7th grade. People call me tall and because I am tall, that doesn’t really bother me, but it mi ght bother other people. People always assume that I’m an athlete. The only sport I play at the moment is basketball. I'm hoping to play track further on in the year. People alw ays ask me, “How tall are you?” “W hat sports do you play?” They always assume that I play sports. What if i didn’t play sports and I was just a normal kid? You shouldn’t judge pe ople by what they look like, their age , or their hobbies. Get to know the person before you assume things then you know if they are what yo u think they are. My name is Wahinenonoheonakai’akahai. I am from Hilo, Hawaii and am of Hawaiian and African American descent. My Hawaiian name means “T he adorable woman of t he gentle sea”.

I am t he younges t of t hree children wit h two older brot hers. I am currently in t he 6t h grade. I am really enjoying my middle school and learning a lot.

I love to learn about my Hawaiian heritage. I am a descendant of Hawaiian Royalty. My great-great grandmot her is Princess Owanaka’ohelelani La’anui. My greatgreat grandfat her, Rober t William Kalanihi’apo Wilcox was Hawai’i’s firs t delegate to Congress. In t he days when Hawai’i was illegally occupied by t he American government, he led an insurrect ion agains t t he so-called “reformed government” wit h intent ions to res tore t he Monarchy to Nat ive Hawaiians, or Queen Lili’uokalani.

Even t hough I live far away from my home in Hawai’i, I am able to keep my cult ure alive t hrough dancing hula, which I love, love, love to hula. I dance for a group called Indy Hula. Dancing wit h Indy Hula I have learned dances from Hawai’i as well as Tahit i, Samoa, New Zealand, and Cook Islands. I have had t he oppor t unity to perform at t he Internat ional Fes t ival, wit h t he Indianapolis Children’s Choir, at IU Bloomington, and for various organizat ions around t he city of Indianapolis. Hula is dance t hat tells a s tory to song or chant. I am able to learn more about my cult ure and language when learning hula. Dancing hula helps me to appreciate my Hawaiian cult ure.

I also love to sing. I am in my school's choir. I enjoy learning how to read music and notes. I also enjoy t he t ime I spend in t he car wit h my dad because he t urns t he volume up and we have fun singing and dancing to my favorite songs. My oldes t brot her, who now attends t he Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, performed at Pike High School in t he school’s show choir. He inspired me to want to sing and I look forward to one day being a par t of show choir also.

My parent s love to keep me act ive, so I played a little bit of basket ball, learned to swim and act ually swam in an act ual swim meet, and ran t rack wit h t he Indy Cheetahs. Over t he summer I attended volleyball camps at T he Academy and recently made t heir top non-t ravel team for off-season volleyball. Now, I discovered t hat volleyball is a spor t t hat I really enjoy and I now have a goal to, one day, play volleyball in college and in t he Olympics. I know t hat it will take a lot of work and I am willing to work hard to reach my goals.

I LOVE pandas. I would do anyt hing to have a panda. Now, I share a love for horses wit h my mom. I have gone to a horse camp and have been able to ride a few t imes at a nearby ranch. One day, I would love to own a ranch wit h my very own horses. I learned how to care for a horse at horse camp and learned t he different riding techniques.

I’ve been told by my ins t ructor t hat I catch on pretty fas t, so maybe t hat means I may also compete in horse shows too!

Alt hough I specifically love pandas and horses, I really do have a love for animals in general. I hope to be able to, one day, work wit h animals. Who knows, maybe become a veterinarian! I’m s t ill young and exploring t he t hings I enjoy and love to do!! So, I’m sure I will have t hat all figured out when I grow up!!!

Bria founded Faces of the Endangered to protect endangered species through the sale of her artwork. She has sold 300 paintings of endangered animals to people around the world and has donated more than $68,000 to animal conservation groups. Beneficiaries include the Jane Goodall Institute, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and the Wolf Conservation Center in New York state. A member of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program, Bria has also published two educational coloring books, including one for the Great Plains Zoo near her home; proceeds help fund the care of the zoo’s endangered species. She uses her website and Facebook page to highlight the challenges facing endangered animals, inspiring followers in 48 countries.

Bria began her work as an 8-year-old, when she won an art contest sponsored

by IFAW. She was shocked to learn there are over 6,000 endangered species and decided to combine her passion for painting with her love of animals to showcase species in danger of extinction. She carefully researches each animal before painting it in an effort to convey the specific conservation challenges it faces. She has sold and shipped paintings to nearly every U.S. state and as far as Australia, Germany, and Hong Kong.

“I hope my paint ings can give endangered animals a face so t hey don’t disappear,” says Bria. “And I hope I can inspire kids like me to believe t hey can do great t hings."

I’m in High School now. So far…it sucks! My classmates are a bunch of skater dudes, punk rockers, nerds, cool dudes and mean girls. I’m more of a nerd but I keep my head down and stay to myself. I sit in the front row of all my classes because the smartest people sit in the front, plus the people in the back are nothing more than trouble makers. At my school the popular kids have all the money so they have all the fun.

In class today we started working on our career projects. I think it will be a waste of time. All of the black boys will probably want to become rappers or -Past basketball You players and the white ones doctors or lawyers.

The girls probably nurses and models. It’s just the way the world turns.

You were so wrong about High School! You shared some of the most memorable times with people who were not like you. You finally begin to open up. Some of the people that you thought you would never hang out with, became some of your closet friends. You tried new things like skateboarding, cheerleading and soccer and guess what? You actually liked them! You found out that the mean girls weren’t mean after all and that your friend Davion wanted to be an engineer even though he was six feet tall in the 10th grade.

Stereotype St ruggles

To stereotype is to make an assumption of a person or group of people based on how they look on the outside. Stereotypes come in different ways and can be considered another form of prejudice, which to me, can be very offensive.

An example of a stereotype is to have an opinion that the role of women is to be in the home raising children, cooking, and cleaning. Recently, in my fitness class, we were given the option of playing football or basketball. I chose to play basketball because I had recently participated in a YMCA basketball league. One of the boys in my class walked up to me and told me that I was going to weigh their team down because I am a girl and girls can’t play sports. He made an assumption based on my gender that I could not possibly be good at basketball.

If he really stayed informed, he would see all the successful female athletes that are dominating in their sports like volleyball, basketball, and even gymnastics.

For example, Simone Biles, a recent headline written by ABC News says, “Simone Biles makes history for winning the most world medals of any gymnast.” She also has a world record move that she landed perfectly, a triple twisting double.

She now has four moves named after her. Simone Biles, a FEMALE gymnast, is dominating!!!

Another personal experience I had with stereotype was in regards to my race.

I am Hawaiian and African American. A girl approached me at school and asked me if people in Hawai’i has beds or stores. The question did not surprise me at all because it happens often and usually as a statement. She assumed that because Hawai’i is made up of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that there are no beds, access to modern technology, or stores. She made an assumption based on my race and the location of the people of Hawai’i. Even before westerners arrived in Hawai’i, the people of Hawai’i were a thriving and self-sufficient people. They are farmers, fishermen, artists, navigators, warriors, dancers, and the list goes on. I am proud to be Hawaiian and I use these experiences to educate people on Hawai’i the islands and Hawai’i, my culture.

Personally, I believe that to stereotype is to form an uneducated or uninformed opinion. I believe that the world would be a much better place if we simply avoided stereotypes of any form.

OVERCOMIN G STEREOTYPES It’s not difficult to imagine that the dance world is full of stereotypes. Children, young adults who study dance as an art form, and even working professionals, are often misunderstood by those who haven’t been exposed to dance. That’s why stereotypes exist in the first place, right? Because of preconceived notions based on lack of information and understanding.

When someone who hasn’t experienced ballet or modern dance firsthand, thinks about what dance is, he or she probably first imagines little girls in pink tutus spinning on their toes. They may also use the words “snobby,” “girly,” or “fragile” to describe someone who studies dance. It’s a stereotype that’s been around for a long time, but in actuality, it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Both male and female ballet and modern dancers train daily to build strength, power, and endurance, just like any other athlete. That’s right, dancers are athletes! The thing about dance, however, is that although they are indeed athletes, they are also artists. They express emotions and tell stories. The goal for dancers is not to show the effort or how difficult it really is, but rather to make it look easy like anyone can do it. Dancers perform amazing feats of strength and control, and they strive to make it look perfect and effortless.

The history of ballet dates back to the mid-1600s with King Louis XIV, making the first ballet dancer a man, the King of France. Modern dance emerged in the late 19th century as a rebellion against classical ballet, and the founders of modern dance included both men and women.

At Shortridge International Baccalaureate High School, students in the new dance program study both ballet and modern dance. The program under the direction of Dana Hart and Nicholas Owens is currently comprised of approximately 45 young women and 5 young men. They take dance class 2-5 days each week.

Male Dancers shouldn't be stereotyped or judged for doing what they love.

I am one of those young men. I am a sophomore and I have been studying ballet and modern dance for two years. People see ballet as a typical women's thing and don't expect males to participate. They also feel that male dancers are less masculine. Male dancers shouldn’t be stereotyped and judged for doing what we love.

The ballet community is always looking for male dancers who dance with passion.

When you begin to know ballet, you will understand that that choreography for males is generally different than females. So too the other male dancers out there, stay courageous, work hard and live your dream. As for me, I am going to keep dancing and show the world that dance is for everyone.

Imagine that you were walking down the street and see someone that is 7’2. You would assume that this person plays some sort of sport like basketball or volleyball. However, a later time reveals that this same tall person is actually a kindergarten teacher that loves to play chess. You still would be in disbelief that someone so tall is not involved in athletics. This is because you already have a stereotype about what tall people” most likely do. The above is an example of a stereotype. A stereotype is a fixed, over-generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. Anytime you group races, genders, or individuals together and make a judgment without knowing them, you are stereotyping. Therefore, when we assume that tall people play sports, we are actually making a judgment based on our previous thoughts, encounters, or experiences with others who have similar heights. We develop stereotypes from an early age and continue to do so throughout our lives. We cultivate stereotypes from friends, families, and experiences. Stereotypes can be negative like “if you make good grades you are a nerd” or seem positive such as “being famous means you are rich”. Either way, stereotypes give us a general view of a person’s world and limit us to what we think rather than what we know about someone. It creates a biased mental shortcut for our brains to take whenever we encounter people. Mental shortcuts allow the brain to make quick decisions on rather a person is a potential threat, friend, or trusted stranger for example.

Your brain wants to make quick decisions on people based on but not limited to gender, race, age, clothes, hairstyles, abilities, as well as a host of other categories. Therefore, if you see someone who is tall that is holding a basketball your brain persuades you to believe that this person is on a sports team versus someone who loves to play chess. It all goes back to where we grew up, how we socialized, and how our brain developed associations to tall people. To further this point, think of how you would stereotype a person with tattoos on their neck and face. I bet you did not say this person was an astronaut. What about a mechanic? A doctor? A teacher? Each of these occupations garners their own stereotypes based on how you think. Stereotypes are everywhere. Some are bad, some seem good, but no matter what, there are stereotypes.

Our job is to pay attention to the stereotypes we develop and challenge the ones that cause harm to others. It takes courage to challenge our own stereotypes. With persistence and patience, we can develop into people who do not rely on stereotypes to make decisions rather individuals who choose to make the right choices based on sincere truths.

Superintendent Johnson: So, I went to Cape Town, South Africa, last year and that’s by far the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.

Here in the states, it would be Destin Florida. Anywhere with a beach, I’m happy.

Ranya: What are your favorite foods?

Superintendent Johnson: I’m pretty basic. My husband would say if I could eat pizza multiple times a week, I would. I also enjoy good soul food: fried chicken, steak, mac and cheese, green beans, sweet potatoes, and cornbread.

Interviewing Superintendent Johnson and learning about her plans for IPS was very insightful. It was fun getting to know more about some of the things she likes to do!

It’s midnight and you’re alone walking down the street. You have two choices; you can walk down the side with people wearing nice suits and beautiful dresses, or the other side with people wearing dirty clothes, having facial piercings, and tattoos all over their body. Which side of the street would you walk on?

Although this is not a realistic situation the idea is that the person is going to have to make their choice based off stereotypes they developed throughout their life. These stereotypes can often determine the decisions we make in our lives, and unfortunately they are not always accurate.

Just over 100 years ago our society changed forever because of World War I and the opportunity it provided women. As men went to Europe for battle it provided women a chance to fight a battle of equality by proving their worth to society outside of the home. No longer could women be stereotyped as too weak to work in a factory or society would crumble due to women losing their morality. Ever since women have continued to make strides towards equality thanks to the movement during World War I that opened doors outside home.

Overcoming stereotypes is not just a problem in our history. Today we still need to address stereotypes and how they impact our relationship towards minority groups. Unfortunately as our society progresses it emphasizes increased speed of information and that is exactly what we want to avoid when dealing with stereotypes. Stereotypes can be dangerous because they can also lead to prejudice towards groups, which can impact our society in a negative way. Often times we can discover with a little bit of effort that overlooking stereotypes can better our decision making.

What are some simple strategies we can use to combat stereotypes?

First, take the time to get to know people before making decisions about their character. Some of the best relationships we develop in our lives occur with people that we did not get along with at first. Every time we make quick decisions about other people we potentially miss out on an opportunity to make a friend.

Secondly, take a positive attitude towards meeting new people. Using this strategy can allow us to ignore negative stereotypes because we are motivated to have a positive outlook on the people we meet.

Just remember, even as we have new inventions daily that make our lives easier, there are some aspects of life that short cuts are not beneficial. The best relationships we develop take time and hard work, and that is what makes them so special. Be willing to make that sacrifice and you can have many healthy relationships with people from all backgrounds that will make you an accepting and happy person.

Flu.......

What is Influenza?

There are different types of Influenza Viruses called strains and all can cause severe illness. Common symptoms are fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, and in severe cases even death. People younger than age 18 and older than age 65 are at highest risk for Influenza.

How do I catch it?

Influenza is spread through small droplets which move through the air when we cough or talk. These droplets can land on things in our environment and spread as others touch the object and then touch their nose or mouth.

What is T he Flu Shot?

Viruses have an outside structure which you can think of like a jacket and inside is where the infectious material lives. There are 3 types of Flu vaccines:

Vaccines that contain the outside “jacket” with the inside infectious material removed

Vaccines that are made in a lab to look like the outside “jacket” Flu viruses that are changed in a lab to be much less able to infect Each Flu Shot contains 3 or 4 strains (think of these like siblings) of Influenza that scientists predict will be the most common each season.

How does a vaccine protect me?

Vaccines introduce what looks like the real infection (the virus jacket) and your body attacks it by your immune response. In this process your body makes antibodies which you can think of as hall monitors. When you have antibodies to an infection, if your body sees that type of infection again, it fights it off so quickly you don’t get the symptoms of feeling sick .

The antibodies your body makes decrease over time. Also, the most common strains change every year.

I’ve heard t he Flu shot makes you sick, is t his t rue?

The vaccination does not give you the Flu, but it can make you not feel well because of the immune response. Even though there is not a real virus infecting you, we are tricking your body into thinking there is, which can cause mild symptoms like fever or muscle aches.

Can I get t he Flu even if I’ve had T he Flu Shot?

Yes, it is possible to get Influenza even if you have had the Flu Vaccination. You may catch a different strain than those included in the vaccination for the season. However, if you have had the vaccination, the severity of illness is much less and you feel better faster than those who did not have the vaccination.

How do I prevent catching t he Flu?

The best way to protect yourself from influenza is to get The Flu Vaccine every year. Washing your hands often with soap and water is also very important. Try your best not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth as this is a way infections spread. Get in the habit of covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing. This will help you prevent the spread of influenza and other viruses.
