Letter from the Editor The holidays can be the happiest time of the year, full of love, joy, and presents! Not to mention, time off of school, sleeping in, and time with family! How can you not love this time of the year? However, for many, this is the worst time of the year! The popular tween that may look like he or she has it all but when it comes to opening presents, they are lucky to get new socks and underwear. Are there “friends” going to tease them if they tell the truth? Or the rich tween who gets all the presents that they want, but they don’t get to actually spend much time, if any, with their family. This tween may want more family time than all the nice gifts. Even the tween with parents that are divorced and they may have to go spend the holidays with family they don’t really like or understand. So as we go into this holiday season remember everyone has a story and a struggle of some sort. Give a smile, a hug or an ear and support each other and most of all make the most of the holiday season!

Darla H.

OUR MISSION: BoldlyU Magazine is specifically designed for tweens, to encourage them to be brave, to be bold and to be themselves by providing a place for them to share their stories, struggles and passions. It is a positive resource to empower them to build confidence within themselves while also helping others!

Book Reviews Alec Kerley and the Terror of Bigfoot Alaban Press, 2013 By: Douglas Tanner 210 Pages Alec’s life seems to be going downhill, with the loss of his mom and a dysfunctional relationship with his dad; nothing seemed to be going right. Although, everything changes when his family and his friend’s family go on “vacation” together. During this trip, secrets are uncovered, and bonds are formed. Everyone involved learns that family can be found in anyone. Then, when Sasquatches attack their cabin, the families and friends must come together to survive the weekend. Through the confusion, Douglas Tanner shows amazing character growth; one of the aspects that made me love this book so much. He also included great detail about each event, which helped me to visualize and comprehend the book even better. I was amazed when I realized how much of a connection he allowed me to have with the characters, just by writing it in the style he did. After I finished this book, I couldn’t wait to read the next one. The action continued non-stop, which kept me engaged until the last word. I fell in love with this publication from the moment I read the first sentence. I loved the craft the book Alec Kerley and the Terror of Bigfoot was written in. I was astounded with this fiction novels plot. Overall, on a scale of one to five for this piece, I would rate it a five. As you can see, it has a high position on my favorite books list. I would recommend this book to a pre-teen and up age range because it has a few parts that can be a little frightening for younger readers. 10

ENTERTAINMENT Friends Are Like That Scholastic Inc., 1984 By: Patricia Hermes 152 pages Do you have a best friend? Do you argue? I know I argue all the time with my best friend. So does Tracey and Kelly, in the book Friends Are Like That by Patricia Hermes. If you have a best friend, I highly suggest reading this book because of the message you will find in the end. Especially, if you are faced with a hard decision when it comes to friendship, which someday you will. The end of junior high can be hard for anyone. You start to deal with relationships, friendships, and worry about your future as you go into high school. In this book, Tracey starts to have problems with her best friend, Kelly. When they start their last year of junior high, Tracey realizes that Kelly is weird. She thought Kelly would grow out of dressing weird and being different, but she doesn’t. Finally, Tracey gets recognized by the popular kids but becomes embarrassed of Kelly. After finally getting everything she ever wanted, being popular, Tracey faces a hard decision. It becomes an even harder decision when she finds out that her crush, Steve, is one of the popular kids. She must either decide to leave Kelly for her crush and the popular kids or stick with her only best friend, that has always been there for her. Most importantly, I recommend this book to anyone, especially junior high kids. This age range will be able to connect and understand each of the characters, in their own way. I learned, don’t do anything you will regret tomorrow, and many more helpful themes while reading Friends Are Like That by Patricia Hermes. This book was not my favorite book, because of how the characters handled given circumstances; but, I believe it is all worth reading for the main theme, which applies to life overall, not just friendship. Earlier, in the first paragraph I said I argued with my best friend all the time, and with the main theme, I realized something. The theme of the book helped me see that even though we might fight, we will never be able to destroy our unbreakable bond. Overall this book was inspirational, effective, and bone-chilling.

Disney’s

Newes t Reboot s

If you haven’t noticed, Disney and other big production companies have been recently remaking the old TV shows and movies we watched as kids and modernizing them. So here are some throwbacks that they have or are remaking in 2017 and 2018.

DuckTales

WOOHOO! Disney XD has made a reboot to the classic late-80’s show, DuckTales. Scrooge McDuck has gained guardianship to his grandnephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. The triplets have adventures exploring McDuck Manor and Scrooge’s past.

Raven’s Home

You don’t have to gaze into the future to see that Disney has made a That’s So Raven reboot. Raven Baxter, now a divorced mother of two kids, uses her psychic abilities to help her be a better mother. Her son Baxter who inherited this ability and uses it to help him figure out middle school.

T he Magic Schoolbus Rides Again

You younger kids may not remember Mrs. Frizzle and her class’s crazy adventures, but now everyone gets to enjoy this fun, educational show! Mrs. Frizzle, who now goes by Professor Frizzle, is still taking her students on wild adventures.

T he Powerpuff Girls

If you don’t remember Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom, everything must not be so sugar, spice, and everything nice. Thankfully Cartoon Network has plans to remake the show and has already dropped a teaser trailer. This new show is going to include a new female character, who’s name wasn’t revealed, that seems to be the newest hero in town. The three girls are all now teenagers and still saving the world before bedtime.

Black Friday Shopping

ENTERTAINMENT

Have you ever been Black Friday Shopping before? If you have, you know how crazy it is. If you have not been, then I am here to teach you how to survive the craziness of Black Friday Shopping. I am going to tell you how to prep beforehand, what to do while you are waiting in lines, and what to do when you get there. First of all, I am going to give you some tips on how to prep for Black Friday Shopping. It is going to be cold since this event is in November, so you want to make sure you dress warmly. So this means sweatpants, jeans, or leggings. Along with a long sleeved shirt, or if you want a short sleeved shirt, I would suggest wearing a sweatshirt or coat. You may want to bring a lot of money so you can get what you want and go. People are crazy, so you want to make sure you can take a hit. You want to be fast so you can beat people to the line, or to something that you want. You want to make sure that you don’t feel bad if you take something that someone else wants. Now, for most of the time you will be outside waiting in lines, so you may want to bring a tent. This brings me to my next tip. Waiting in lines. No one likes waiting in lines, so here are some things that you can do while you wait. In the very beginning of this adventure, you are waiting in line for the doors to open. You can bring a card game for you to play by yourself like solitaire, or you can play with the people around you. Or you can play on your phone. You could even bring a coloring book. There are activity books with lots of games to play, or even just a regular book to read to keep you from following asleep. Then there is the waiting in line to buy something. You don’t really want to be doing anything in those lines so you can keep your spot. You can play on your phone if you want, but just make sure you are paying attention. My next tip is what to do when you get there. You want to rush through the doors and get what you want before anyone can take it. You want to get either a shopping cart or a really big bag to put all of your things in. When you get to the line, you want to be in the front and make sure no one cuts in front of you. You want to be fast and know what you are going to get so you can get it and go. So, I have given you tips on how to prep, what to do while you are waiting in line and what to do when you get there. I hope I have helped you for this next Black Friday year. If you don’t go, that is probably safe too, but if you do go, don’t get hurt and use my helpful tips.

What's Hot: Nintendo Switch One of the best consoles is the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is a console and a handheld at the same time. It was made by Nintendo on March 3, 2017. The first game made for it was Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. It is a free roam game where you play as Link, and you have to save Hyrule from Ganondorf, an evil man trying to destroy Hyrule. You have to awaken four divine beasts to help defeat Ganondorf. Done with the Legend of Zelda… time to switch!!! To the features of the console!! You can use one controller or two controllers at the same time! You can manipulate the controllers vertically or sideways. You have the option to use the touchscreen or not, and it has a lot of third-party games, which means there are games not made by the same company (Nintendo). So far all the review sites say 10 out of 10 for the Nintendo Switch!! For the parents … there is an app to set time limits for play time. The app will notify parents if the time limit goes over. One setting can make the console shut off when the time limit is reached. Another option can ban games until the child is old enough to play the game. The app is called Nintendo Switch Parental Controls. But don’t worry … all Nintendo games are good for kids, not that much violence. I have reviewed the Switch and told you about it!!

BEEP Baseball

Beep baseball is the classic American pastime adapted for the blind and visually impaired.

When did you s tar t playing beep baseball? I started playing January of 2017.

What has playing beep baseball done for you?

It has done a lot. I just don’t play beep ball; I also play a variety of sports. Like now I’m doing track for the blind school in Indianapolis. Beep ball helps me get into great shape for track. So now in track, I haven’t lost yet since we began this year and I broke the 60-meter record, and it has helped me mentally and physically to keep my head in the game to become a better student-athlete.

What are your goals for t he fut ure?

In beep ball, it is to win as many championships that I can and try to get where Erik is now, which is the top of the beep ball world and have my name up there.

Were you born blind?

No, I went blind when I was around 6 or 7.

How has your life changed?

It really hasn’t changed much, but it has changed a little. It’s not easy knowing that I can’t see completely, but I can see well enough to do what I have to do. Its kind of the same I just can’t see as well as I used to.

What advice would you give to Middle Schoolers?

If you are, an athlete put school before sports, and become a good school-athlete.

When did you s tar t playing beep ball?

FEAT URED

I started playing when I was 13 years old, for a team out of Chicago called the Chicago Comets. I started playing for them because at that time it was unheard of for someone that young to play beep baseball. They were the only team that gave me a chance, so I played for them for 2 years. Then it became too much of a strain for my family to travel to Chicago every weekend for practice. So that is when I started playing for the Indy Thunder. I have played for them now for three years, and we have won two World Series Championships, so it was a good move.

What would you tell someone in Middle School t hat has a handicap?

I would tell them that you have to be honest with yourself. You aren’t going to be able to do everything, depending on what your disability might be. Especially if you are blind, you aren’t going to be able to play regular baseball or football obviously because they are highly visual sports. However, there are outlets out there that you can do the exact same thing, be a part of a team, feel like you are winning a championship and know all the good feelings you get from that sort of stuff.

What has beep baseball done for you?

When I was younger, I played Little League, and baseball was my favorite thing in the world. When that was taken away from me, it was hard to deal with at a young age. I lost my sight at 8 years old, so it was a hard thing to deal with. For the longest time, for like 5 or 6 years, I wanted to play baseball and tried, but I didn’t see well enough. Beep baseball gave me that chance to play baseball again. It will be hard to stop playing once I get older.

What advice would you give to Middle Schoolers in general? I would tell them to never let someone tell them that they can’t do something because you will never know if you could do it unless you try. It is better to try and fail, than not to try and not succeed.

Cheerleading is a

SPORT...

Have you ever looked over at the girls with high bows during a basketball game and wondered why they’re there? Unfortunately, people have. Cheerleaders go to games and smile through any criticisms thrown their way to cheer on and support a team that never appreciates them. However, it’s so much more than just supporting the athletes. Cheer is a sport alone, and it’s harder than it looks. This is my third year cheering, and I used to play basketball so I can compare it to what you’re more likely to think of as a sport. I used to think a lot like most people when it came to cheer. I thought it was just for those girls who didn’t feel like putting in all the running basketball required. I was wrong. I’m going to try to convince you that you are too. When you ask Google to define the word sport, it says, “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Sports are defined by requiring physical activity, teamwork, and competition; cheer meets all qualifications.

24

November/December 2017

The most obvious thing that makes an activity a sport is that it requires physical exertion. Some people argue that cheerleading requires no skill or physical activity, but they are most definitely mistaken. Cheer requires speed, strength, balance, skill, and a smile on your face no matter what happens. I guess the constant smiling faces are part of what tricks people into thinking it isn’t difficult, but it requires hard work and dedication just like any other sport. When I first started cheering, I figured it would be the easiest thing in the world. I was unmistakably wrong about that though. Cheer surprised me by how hard it really is.

FEAT URED

"Ch eer s u rpri se d me by h o w h ard i t really i s."

Speaking of competition, that’s the next thing that makes cheer a sport. Any athlete can tell you it’s not a sport if there isn’t a winner. Some people argue that there isn’t any competitiveness, but I promise you cheer is just as competitive as any other sport. Cheerleaders may hide their desire to be the best behind their big bows and smiling faces, but I promise you each squad is striving to be better than the others. If you go to an actual cheer competition, you’ll see a much more competitive side of cheerleaders than at a game. In conclusion, cheer is a sport. There are three things that define a sport: it requires physical exertion, it requires teamwork, and it involves competition. Cheer meets all of these requirements just as much as any other sport does and deserves to be considered a sport by everyone. I realize most of you won’t ever see cheer as a sport, but until you try it, you won’t understand how much of a sport it really is. Cheer brings its participants closer just like any sport. If you look at any good sports team, you’ll notice that the team is kind of like a family. They win together, and they lose together. The same goes for cheer. Cheer requires physical exertion just like any other sport. If track is a sport, cheer is most definitely a sport. Cheer is also competitive; girls devote their lives to cheer to be able to say they’re on the best cheer squad, so you know it’s a real competition to them. I’m not saying cheer is harder than all the other sports out there, but it is far from just a hobby and deserves the title of being a sport. I hope I have persuaded you to believe that cheerleading is a real sport, or at least to believe it’s not as ridiculous of a thought as you started out thinking.

Hope, 13

Who are some of your personal heroes and why? Kyrie Irving and Tamika Catchings are two of my personal heroes! Kyrie because he’s a great player who won an NBA championship and is on the cover of 2K18! One of my goals is to be on the cover of an NBA themed video game & win championships someday too! And of course my aunt Tamika is my personal hero because she’s someone close to me that has accomplished so much throughout her basketball career. She’s also my hero because of all of the great things she does to encourage young people like me to set goals & reach for the stars. She also works harder than anyone I’ve ever met and always puts God & family first. What act ivit ies do you enjoy in your spare t ime? I like playing outside with friends, playing my Xbox One and playing basketball. I also enjoy drawing silly comics and reading sports themed & Diary of a Wimpy kid books! I f you could do anyt hing you wanted right now what would it be? Spend time with my cousins in Chicago!! What have you found to be t he mos t challenging t hing t his school year? Showing up to my classes with the right supplies & books! Transitioning to middle school has been challenging because I struggle with organization! I earned a detention during my first month of school for having 6 missing assignments. The crazy thing is, that most of the assignments were completed, but I just forgot to bring them to class & turn them in. 26

November/December 2017

What advice would you give to ot hers your age or younger? I would tell them to be patient with themselves and to enjoy being a kid. Also, to try your hardest in everything you do in school, sports & life! What are your future goals and how do you plan on reaching them? A short-term goal is to have no more missing homework assignments this quarter and not to earn any additional detentions. I plan to reach these short-term goals by working extra hard in the classroom and turning in all of my assignments. My future goal is to earn a college scholarship to play basketball or football at UCLA or the University of Texas. I can achieve this by staying out of trouble, getting good grades and being a great athlete/teammate. My dream career is to be an NBA player or become a video game developer. This would be cool because I could play games before they’re released & get them for free! In order to achieve these dreams/goals, I will have to work really hard and learn the ins & outs of video game & software engineering. What’s your bigges t s t ruggle? My biggest struggle is my attitude & patience. I tend to get worked up too easily, and I lose my cool way too often. I struggle with this the most when I’m playing basketball, but it is something that I am working on. An example of my struggle with patience is that I get bored easily & complain when I don’t get what I want. I lose my temper on the basketball court way too often. I think it’s because I’m hard on myself and I hate to lose. I’ve received more than my share of technical fouls for talking back to officials and complaining about calls. I’m taking a year off from organized basketball in hopes that I can learn to control myself and focus on school. What is your proudes t accomplishment so far? My proudest accomplishment is setting the Delaware Trail Elementary schools Dog Jog record back in 1st grade. I ran 16 laps in 30 minutes which broke the previous record that was set by a 5th grader, so it was a pretty big deal!

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Hi, my name is Sophia, and I am currently in seventh grade. I started running two years ago. I run with my school, Park Tudor, during the fall and spring, and at Carmel Distance Project during the summer and winter. Running is a great way to get outside and be active. Running helps me relax, and it’s an amazing time to think. After all of the training I have done, I am stronger in my core and my legs. When I am stronger, it’s easier to run faster. Consistent training also helps with my breathing. I can hold my breath longer, and I can go farther while running. Long distance running is almost all mental. My dad tells me lots of tips to improve my running, and also ways to throw off my opponents. My experience allows me to push myself through the race as hard as I can. Another great thing about running is that it is a confidence booster. A lot of my success comes from the support I receive from my family, teammates, and friends. They encourage me to do the best I can do, and when I do not run as well as I thought I would, they comfort me and encourage me more. I try to give them the same support in their races, too. It is also a confidence booster when I beat my personal records. Running is also a great way to make lifelong friends. Even though I only see some of my running friends infrequently, I am still great friends with them. I hope to continue my streak of first place finishes for the rest of the season, and beyond. My goal is to win world championships and many other races. I believe running is such an inspiring and helpful sport.

FEAT URED What act ivit ies do you enjoy in your free t ime? How did you get involved in them? Biking, scootering, baseball (but I don’t like it that much), and swim team in the summer. I swim for the Snappers, and I’m playing basketball this winter at Woodcrest. I also like playing outside with my friends, and I would like to learn how to BMX bike. What are your fut ure goals as of right now? To get sponsored for scootering. (To be sponsored means a company will supply him with their parts) What does a perfect day look like? I would wake up around 8 am, watch my iPad for a bit and then go outside and play with my friends. We would ride bikes around the neighborhood, ride our scooters and swim in the neighborhood pool when we get hot. We would eat lunch outside. We would play more. Once it’s dark, my mom would make a fire in the firepit. We would have smores & do fireworks. Then go inside for a nice warm shower and to bed! What types of animals do you have? I have 1 dog named Abby. We rescued her from the humane society. We also have 3 cats, Wink, Gizmo & Tuff. All were also rescue cats. (Wink humane society, Giz Boone county animal care and Tuff second chance.) Henry loves animals and would adopt all of them if we had room!

HOCKEY CHAMPIONS! My name is Brettlynn. I am 11 years old, and I have been playing hockey since I was 4 years old. Hockey is my favorite sport, and my hockey team’s name is the Mid Missouri Tigers. Last season we won the state championship!

My hockey experience has impacted my life in many ways, and it has taught me many things. One thing it has taught me is teamwork. Teamwork is not only learning to play together, but it’s also learning to work together. If you don’t have teamwork, you will most likely lose the game. Something else I have learned is problem-solving. You problem solve in hockey when your opponent is skating down the ice with the puck on the other side of the ice. When this happens, you have to decide whether or not to go towards them or block their teammates from receiving a pass. Another way hockey impacted my life is that I have made a lot of new friends. Not only my teammates but playing against other teams and learning to get to know them as well. Hockey has also given me a lot of very amazing experiences. I have made tons of memories while playing hockey; across Missouri and in other states. I have also learned many important skills while I have been playing hockey such as the skill of skating. Other very important ones are shooting the puck, stick handling, passing, and how to take the puck away from someone. These things are all very important to be a successful hockey player. I have been the only girl on my hockey team every season except this season. By being the only girl on my team I have learned some things, for example, it doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl you can do anything you set your mind to. You have to have motivation, belief, and confidence, not only in yourself but in your teammates. Some of my favorite experiences of playing hockey are getting to play on the St. Louis Blue’s home ice, being kid captain of a Blues game and going out on the ice with the Blues team during the National Anthem, and doing a flag presentation at a Blues game. 36 November/December 2017

This year I am playing on my local Mid Missouri Tigers team and also an all-girls team in St. Louis called the Cyclones. I am really looking forward to this season, bring on the action!

Holiday St ruggles How to survive the holidays with lots of family? My family personally doesn’t let you get away and hide in your room the whole night. Which I guess is a good thing because for me personally, I regret taking for granted my great grandma. I feel so guilty for not spending time with her whenever she was always so kind to me. So, spend time with your family because you don’t realize how much you need them until they are gone. Surviving the holidays with your least favorite family members can be hard. Just try to ask them how it’s going because they really appreciate it when you do that. Then just try to hang out with your cousins and be involved. Also, help cook dinner or set the table.

DEAR FUTURE ME

Why do I have to go spend the holidays with my grandparents? They don’t seem to care about me and never have. They find me annoying and not good enough. They like my cousins way better than me. They treat me like I am a little kid. Do I seriously have to go? I just want to be good enough in their eyes. They say they are family but don’t act like they are family or that they even care about me. Can’t they actually care? I will put on a front of kindness and happiness, but deep down I just want to explode and yell at them. All I feel like I can do is hold it in and put on a front towards them. I don’t know-Past what You to do... -Past You

DEAR PAST ME

I know it is hard spending holidays with them with all the pain and anger that you carry. However, you have to learn to forgive them and let go. You can’t carry that pain and anger anymore because it will destroy you and cause so much anxiety and insecurities. Learn to let go and forgive because you don’t want to end up where you are now with all that pain, anger, anxiety, and insecurities you carry now. They never seemed like they cared but they tried, and you have to realize that you are who you are now because you went through that. And you will turn out to be pretty awesome. Take this pain and anger and learn from it. Use it to learn how to love and care for others like how you want to be loved and cared for. Don’t bottle it up because you can’t live with that. It is hard to be around them but remember to love them even when you don’t want to forgive. You will learn that you have to take care of yourself and not let people walk all over you but treat everyone will respect and kindness. Find someone to help you get through the pain and anger. Find someone who will help you forgive and help you let go. Keep going to this person every time they make you angry because they will help you through it. Don’t ever let yourself bottle it up. Talk to someone and work through it. Let it go and trust me it will be hard but you have to, and it will help you in the long run.

OVERCOMIN G PROBLEMS

"A negative mind WILL NEVER

GIVE YOU A

POSITIVE

life."

When handling my problems, I like to think of the quote, “A negative mind will never give you a positive life.” When I was younger, I went through some issues in my life where keeping a positive attitude was tough. For example, My best friend and I got into a really big argument which caused major drama. I didn’t really know how to handle it in a positive way, so I turned to other negative ways to deal with the problem. I used to push my problems to the side, or just not care about my decisions. However, I have realized that if you make careless decisions now, then you may end up regretting them later on in life, or it will be something you will have to live with for the rest of your life. Even though the situation was bad, I could have looked at it in a more positive way, and been understanding, instead of assuming everything she said was mean and harmful. Today, her and I are closer than we’ve ever been before. Sometimes when we are dealing with problems some of us feel that we have to fix it ourselves, or it’s our fault, but really we need time to process what happened, and not think the worst of the situation. In addition to keeping a positive outlook, I try to keep my faith involved with any situation I am in. My favorite bible quote that motivates me is 1 Corinthians 10:13. This verse basically states that God will never give you anything you can’t handle.

42

November/December 2017

Meaning God wouldn’t put me through this situation if he knew I wouldn’t be able to push through it. I personally believe that if you keep a positive mindset, you can get through anything if you really want to. If you don’t put in the effort, then you won’t get to where you want to be in life. Finally, in dealing with everyday situations, I realize it is important to confront your problems. Now that I look back on some of the stuff I went through I know that it was not ok for me to push those troubles aside because most of the time if you ignore your disputes they will follow you until you overcome that dilemma.

Counselor’s Corner Holiday Blues... This is just a reminder that the holidays are a very difficult time for many people. While some people are in a state of frenzied excitement over the holiday fun, others are dealing with extremely difficult feelings. Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditionally a family time, but many people are estranged or have dysfunctional relationships with their families, or have suffered the loss of a loved one. The rejection and hurt that they feel on a daily basis becomes magnified during holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. For children who have difficult home and family situations, it is normal to see an increase in anger, sadness, and/or acting out behaviors during the holiday season. These children may be irritable and may become more physically and verbally aggressive than usual. Also, for children whose families are having a hard time financially, the holidays can be very difficult. It is exciting for many children to talk about their Christmas wish lists, but many students know that they will not be receiving as much as others. This can create some of the same feelings of anger and sadness. So‌ if you are wondering why a friend or a fellow classmate is having a particularly bad week or month, chances are it’s the holiday blues. Bear with your friends and fellow classmates when possible, and show them a little more grace than usual.

Survive Your Siblings During the Holidays!

Getting along with siblings during the holidays can be a real challenge. Brothers and sisters can fight over just about anything…anything. Here are a few tips to help you find some common ground and keep the peace.

1. Cool Down When you get into a heated argument, step away and take some time by yourself to cool down. After you cool down, go back and say, “I’m sorry. Can we talk it out now?”

2. Spend one-on-one t ime wit h each ot her How can you have a good relationship with someone if you don’t spend time with them? Be involved with their lives. Find out what they like and learn more about it. When you spend time together, you’ll find you have a lot more in common than you think.

3. Apologize firs t Take the high road and always be the first to apologize. Be mature, even when your siblings aren’t.

I'm Sorry

4. Pick your battles Some things just aren’t worth fighting over. Learn to let it go sometimes. It’s as simple as that…pick your battles.

Trip to t he Tetons My trip to the Tetons had so many fun things to do every day. We started the 23hour bus ride on a Saturday afternoon. Sleeping on the bus was the hardest part of the trip. We took a few stops on the trip to get gas, food, and just to walk around to get our legs stretched out. Once we arrived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming we got to roam around stores with our field group. Then we took pictures under the antler arches. When we got to TSS (Teton Science Schools), girls got assigned to their lodge, and boys got assigned to their lodge. The rest of the night was pretty low key. The first full day, we went on a hike and saw baby deer with their mother, a marmot, and fish. We also got a great view of the mountains. We ate at the lake where we sat on logs. For dinner, it was a Mexican Fiesta. The next day we went to Phelps Lake and hiked around it. We took several trails and saw many animals such as a mother and child moose, several mule deer, mergansers (ducks), some small fish, birds, chipmunks, etc. We ate sandwiches and Oreos, fruit, vegetables, and salads at Phelps Lake. We were working hard, but we also had some time to be one with nature! For dinner, we had Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and brownies! The next day we got to go to Yellowstone! Old Faithful erupted just 10 minutes after our arrival, which was perfect. But even cooler --- Beehive geyser erupted at the same time. A rare double viewing. Next, we got to choose between a 7-mile hot spring and waterfall hike or a hike around the upper geyser basin to see a different set of hot springs and geysers. We also had the opportunity to do some shopping and enjoy ice cream. After the big group picture, we traveled to Colter Bay to have fun in Jackson Lake, relax around the campfire, and play games while we cooked a BBQ dinner. Â

ST RICT LY T WEENS The last full day in Wyoming we went canoeing on String Lake, and we went hiking. We hiked to Jenny Lake where we waded and learned about how the Tetons were made! We ate sandwiches, pickles, oranges, chips, and other snacks String Lake. For dinner, we had Meat Lasagna, Veggie Lasagna, garlic bread, peas & carrots, salad, sugar cookies and lemonade. The food at the Teton Science School was amazing. The next morning we left the Teton Science School and began our 23-hour trip back home. This time it was much easier to sleep on the bus since we were all worn out. Our parents were happy to have us home. I would highly recommend this trip for any vacation.

Skin Care Tips

THE KNOW HOW

As a teen makeup is hard but it doesn’t have to be. Take a look at these few tips, and you’ll be all good! These can be done in any order you like, but this is just the order I suggest:

.

● Garnier Cleansing waterremoves makeup and dirt

.

● Mois t urizer- keeps your skin smooth

.

● Pixi hydrat ing rose waterhydrates your skin

.

● Pore eraser and primermakes it so makeup stays on all day and doesn't get into your pores

It’s your choice on what age you start to wear makeup, but it’s best that when acne shows up, you start a face care routine. If you don’t know what to use for your skin type just go to www.neutrogena.com/acne-quiz.html This is a quiz on your skin type, and it gives you a list of products specially picked for your skin!

KNOW HOW

Start with clean & damp toweldried hair and rub the USmooth Prime cream through the bottom 3/4 of your hair. Blow dry hair 100% dry. Set iron to around 420 degrees. This makes it easier to get more defined waves. Take about 1-1.5 inch sections of hair and clamp the straightener about 1 inch away from your roots. As you move it down your hair, move it back and forth, twisting the straightener up and down to create those bends. Continue this process for the rest of your hair.

THE KNOW HOW

Parent’s Corner The Challenges of the Holidays as a Single Parent The holidays can be quite a bit of a challenge both financially and emotionally. What was once considered a wonderful time for your family when you were married can become stressful and emotionally draining. Below are a few tips to help provide support for you and your inner circle.

Budget, budget, budget. Do not feel as if you have to overcompensate for there only being one adult in the family. Often children don’t really want things when they can appreciate time spent. This may take a few holidays to teach this lesson, but it is one that will last a lifetime.

Create new t radit ions and hold onto some of t he old ones. It’s important to create a couple of new traditions as

you begin this new chapter.

Ask for help. Many single parents who have a support system

along with those who may not, are afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is essential to avoid being overwhelmed. You will find that those around you want to help! Seek support with friends, family or perhaps your faithbased community if you have one. You aren’t alone!

November/December 2017

Lean into t he cry. Sometimes as single parents (or newly divorced parents) we become soldiers of life marching through task after task avoiding processing emotions. Sometimes you may feel sad. In particular, if this is not what you perceived your family would look like. Lean into a good cry. Essentially if we avoid leaning into the cry, it erupts in the most untimely fashion. One time I found myself standing in the checkout line at Walgreens succumbing to the quiet cry. With strangers around me trying not to make eye contact. The kind cashier checked me out as quickly as possible. With tears rolling down my face I attempted to wipe as quickly as they were coming. The emotion was unexpected, and the tears refused to be ignored. Now I lean into the cry. I cry, let it out and often feel much better.

Embrace t his new chapter. Things may not have turned

out the way you thought they would, but everything will end up fine. If you embrace the new normal of what your family makeup looks like now, you will find it is all for the greater good. Be prepared to ignore things that may have seemed really important at one time. I have learned that the new chapter may not “look” as pulled together as it did with two adults in our home but we are fine. My children are happy and healthy, and so is their mother.

"The greatest gift of all is to spend christmas with those you love."
