Letter from the Editor Anxiety! When I was in Middle School, I had anxiety, but I didn’t know the word for it; how times have changed. Now that our tweens are completely deciding the issues that we talk/write about my respect for them grows daily. They not only want to help other kids going through the same issues, but they also want to dig into the harder issues that they are facing on a daily basis. Anxiety really affects everyone in some way or another at every age, but I love to see and hear some of the coping skills that the kids have, and how they recognize their limits to certain situations. If I only had some of these skills when I was their age, my middle school years might have been different.

Hopefully, by sharing other kids stories, we will be able to make your Middle School years better even if it is in a small way.

When my anxiety is through the roof, I put an encouraging message on my mirror in the bathroom like “I matter,” “I’m going to do great today,” “be positive,” “be brave.”

Little things like that can change your whole outlook on the day, and when you come back in the evening you can say “I was strong today” or “I do matter,” because you really do matter!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bars

Ingredients: ½ c. unsalted butter, softened ¾ c. packed light brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 c. all purpose flour 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 2 c. mini chocolate chips ½ cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup milk chocolate chips

Instructions: 1.

Line an 8x8 inch pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil and set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together butter and brown sugar until it is

fluffy. This takes about 3 minutes. Add vanilla and bet until combined.

3. Turn the mixer to low and alternate the flour and the sweetened condensed milk until combined. Gently fold in chocolate chips.

4. Press the cookie dough into the bottom of the 8x8 pan. It will be sticky so lightly flour your hands if needed.

5. Cover your bars with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 hours or over night until firm.

6. To make the topping, combine the peanut butter and ½ cup chocolate

chips in a microwave safe bowl. Stir every 30 seconds until smooth. Pour and spread over the top of the chilled dough and chill at least for 1 hour until firm.

Learn A Language Just a while ago I started learning French and have got some stuff down like genders, food, and animals. I learned those by downloading an app. Many people think that you can only learn the language by downloading an app, but there are also other ways.

I downloaded Duolingo by Duolingo; it is a free app that you can learn pretty much any language. You can also find a tutor in different languages.

You can learn the language by studying it every day, carry a dictionary in that language, or even talk to a native of that language. To memorize it I suggest watching, listening, reading, or even writing in that language. For example, I study my French almost every day by reading, writing, and listening to it. Now I can say “the girl eats an apple” and much more. (If you are curious on how to say this it is, “Le fille mange une pomme” ) Or you could even travel to the country that speaks the language that you are learning (you don’t have too, and I haven’t yet but want to).

These are all ways to learn a language to keep you busy during the summer and to learn any language of your choice. Not only to keep you busy, but you could also be learning it to expand your knowledge. Just remember to have fun learning a new language!

Printed Shoes Adidas has been changing the game lately.

They’ve landed deals with big names such as Pusha T, Kanye West, Damian Lillard, and James Harden. They’ve also implemented a new cushioning system in their shoes, Boost, that people all around the globe regard as the most comfortable material ever. Now, Adidas has changed the shoe game once again. The only company with stock prices increasing faster than Nike has created and released to the public a 3D printed shoe. It’s called the “3D Runner Future Craft.”

This shoe has an entirely printed body, made out of one material, TPU. Also, you can get the Future Craft in any color you want, so long as it’s black. But even though the color is bland, the shoe itself is stunning. Don’t get your hopes up, though. You won’t be able to run to your local Footlocker to buy this particular pair of shoes.

Buying this rare gem will set you back $4,000 (plus tax). Furthermore, in my research, I only found two pairs that are available for sale right now. However, Adidas is planning on releasing 100,000 pairs of a new and improved version of the Future Craft in 2018, drastically reducing the price. But until then, most of us will just have to dream of owning the unique masterpiece that is the Adidas “Future Craft.”

What's Hot: New Shows to talk about...

MACGYVER One of my all time favorites is Macgyver and here are three reasons why you should watch it.

First, it’s an action and comedy thriller. Macgyver is constantly improvising and creating things that save their lives at the spur of the moment.

Second, each character has his or her own distinct personality, and in a way, you can relate to each character.

Lastly, it’s something that everybody can watch whether it is with your family or friends.

NCIS The second show you should watch has been around for awhile, but it always surprises me with new things and here are three reasons why you should watch NCIS....

First, its a crime show which is fun because I am always trying to find who did it before it ends.

Second, it’s not the same people every time. You get new characters coming into the show , which keeps it interesting.

Lastly, each character is very original but as you watch the show over time you see different sides of them and it makes them very relate-able.

ular Popvideo games For those who don’t know what video games are, video games are electronic devices that are played on a TV, computer, or even on your phone. One game that is popular right now is Minecraft. Minecraft is a sandbox game that you can use your imagination with blocks. Minecraft is available on Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Tablets, Phones, and PC/MAC. I’d suggest you get the PC/MAC version, it costs the most, but you will have a choice to pick between single player and multiplayer. However, when you play the PC/MAC version, you may notice that it will be a little laggy at first for both multiplayer and single player, but once you start playing it for a few minutes, it shouldn’t be as slow. Minecraft has two game modes that you can play. There is Survival mode for players that want to fight monsters with limited hearts and limited supplies. You can also play in Creative mode for players that have unlimited supplies. You can build up to high heights, and you can’t die. Minecraft is for creative minds both young and old.

Another popular game is Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros is a melee game where characters like Mario, Link, and many others compete to become the best fighter. Super Smash Bros is only available for Nintendo game systems. One of this game’s many great features is the ability to challenge players across the globe. Street Fighter fans will appreciate this game for its likeness and inclusion of many beloved Nintendo characters.

Lastly, The Legend of Zelda is a classic puzzle-solving game. Like Super Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda can only be played on a Nintendo system.

Gamers find The Legend of Zelda an extremely hard and lengthy adventure.

All of these games are fun to play. These games are a “must have” for any gamer.

What do you remember most about Middle School?

My middle school experience was interesting because I was the first class to attend Gentry Middle School in Columbia when Columbia made the decision to move to a middle school format. So we attended the first half of our year at Mill Creek and then moved into the new building at Christmas break. So getting to go to middle school at a new school in a new building was a pretty cool experience.

What advice would you give to Middle Schoolers today?

It’s never too early to be thinking about what you want to do with your life.

Education in high school and certainly college is becoming more customizable, and you have opportunities to get ahead if you are willing to take advantage of them.

When and why did you decide to be a politician?

I just wanted to help the community that I grew up in, in some way. I joined a Rotary and the local Chamber of Commerce and just started attending more events, etc. That led to a couple of conversations about maybe running for City Council, which led to a conversation about running for State Representative. My motivation has always been to serve — I never really thought and still don’t think this is something I will do for a big portion of my life, but I certainly enjoy the opportunity and am trying to be as effective as I can during my time of public service.

What does your job consist of?

I am in legislative session from mid-January to mid-May. During session, I am in Jefferson City most days introducing legislation, attending committee hearings, spending lots of time on the Senate floor, and working to pass good legislation to benefit the people of Missouri. During the interim, I attend a lot of events and remain as active as I possibly can in the community. It is a “part time” job technically, but we usually spend 60+ hrs a week working to represent and engage the district and its people.

FEATURED What is it like running for a position in politics?

It is really tough, but also a lot of fun. Getting to meet people has always been the best part of the job for me, and you get to do a lot of that! Fundraising and having your opponent say lots of nasty things about you isn’t alway the funnest, but it is obviously a part of the process! I have found it be very rewarding overall, and you gain a lot of experience and benefit from the run, regardless of the outcome.

What advice would you give someone that wants to do what you do?

Get engaged early and often. Get to know your local and state elected officials. Get engaged on some issues you care about. There are really no shortcuts in public service. Put in the work, figure out what you’re passionate about, and figure out the best way to make progress in that area.

What is your favorite part about your job?

Meeting and engaging with people.

What do you want to accomplish in the future?

Just continue to pass legislation and secure funding for the things that Mid-Missouri prioritizes. A lot of what I work on came from constituents, local small businesses, etc. Just simply trying to find good solutions to problems facing Mid-Missourians.

My name is Unique, and I am in 7th grade. This school year I have played on the school Volleyball and Basketball team, also, this month I will start running on the school track team. I play the flute in the school band as well.

I have participated in High Stepper, gymnastics, competitive cheer, and other dance teams. I have been in three different pageants; it was fun and a good experience. I love to play sports and try new things. I think if I keep busy then I will never be bored and I will have options in my future.

I attend the Boys & Girls Club of the Columbia area, and this year I went to the Keystone Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The Keystone Clubs provide leadership development opportunities for young people ages 14 to 18.

Youth participate in activities in three focus areas: academic success, career preparation, and community service. With the guidance of an adult advisor, Keystone Clubs aim to have a positive impact on members, the Club, and community. We went to a daycare and read books, went on a college tour and had the Columbia Police Department come to our club to speak about our rights. All of these things had to be completed in order for us to go to the conference. This year was my first Keystone Conference; it was 3 full days of classes, learning events, a gigantic game room, with new faces and amazing people. We got to see music artists (current and upcoming artists, actors, and dancers). We had daily, fun meetings where we saw Sevyn Streeter and Common and also a professional skateboarder. In the games room, we saw many fun things and fun people; there were big table top games, dance and sports games, a driving simulator, giant wipe out, lazar tag, and a lot of fitness challenges. On our free time, we went to restaurants and shopping. The best part of the trip was when my friends and I tried out for the talent show, and we made it!! We were able to perform in front of close to 100 people for a chance to perform the next morning in front of all 2,500 people. We didn’t win, but we had fun anyway. I am going to continue to be a part of the Keystone Club and hope that more people join, so our group can as be as big as other clubs.

Fayette Garden

SHOUTOUT

The Fayette school community has been adding a new, artsy addition to their school garden. Clark Middle school decided to bring a project to Megan Schafer, the school’s art teacher, to paint a mural for the school’s garden. The three 8th graders that were picked to paint the mural are Kaitlin Furneaux, RJ, and Hazel, alongside Megan Schafer, “I love that students can show they’re talents and I love that it brings awareness to the garden. And how this project and the garden can bring more responsibility to the kids and allow more educational opportunities.” Said Cheri Huster, the principal for the Daily Clark Middle School and the Daily Elementary.

The school garden was started four years ago, instantly brightening up the dull space behind the school. Over these four years, the school garden participants, such as the green team elementary members, have raised many vegetables for the community of Fayette and the school. As explained by Cheri Huster, the garden usually teaches the kids to harvest, sample, and sometimes sell the vegetables that they have grown. The school is planning on selling to Paisley’s Boutique this year.

The garden caretakers consist of Kelly Beeler, the School Nurse, and her green team. Green Team is a group of 3rd through 5th graders who help with the garden and the school’s outdoor classroom. Other lovely helpers also consist of the elementary students, who each have a garden bed; teaching responsibility and hard work to the students.

The mural will hopefully be done soon, fully showing the blooming pride and accomplishments of the garden and the school itself.

ARCHERY Highlight Hi, my name is Sadie. I have done archery for one year, and I am currently in my 2nd year. My goal is to do this all through Middle School and High School. I hope to get a scholarship for college in archery.

So, now I will tell you a little about archery itself. Archery may look simple, but it can be quite difficult sometimes. To start out, you need the right bow with the right strength. Our coaches help us with that. Our school provides the bow, but you can still shoot with your own. To shoot, you have your quiver in front of you, and if you are right handed then your left side is facing the target with your bow on your left foot. Do the opposite if you’re left handed. Your aim-point all depends on the strength of your bow. The weaker the bow, the higher you aim. The stronger the bow, the more you get to aim where you want to shoot. But, everyone aims differently. I am in the lower right corner of the red. This doesn’t mean, however, that a person with the same draw weight as my bow is going to aim at the same point. Your stance, the way you grip the bow, the way you release, and your aim, are all stuff to pay attention to.

Archery isn’t for everyone, but I sure do love it! Give it a try! You’ll never know if you like it until you try it!

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH My name is Carter. I am 12 years old and I play for the Columbia Elite baseball team. I started playing baseball when I was six years old. Baseball is my favorite sport because it's fun and you have to think a lot. Baseball is a 70% mental game. My favorite position to play is pitcher and when I am not pitching I play shortstop or centerfield. I hope by practicing and working hard now when I am older I will be able to play on my high school baseball team.

SPOTLIGHT TWEEN ON THE COVER: HAYLI TO DANCING T! THE LIMI Hi, I’m Hayli! I am a sixth grader. I am a Dancer at Dancers Alley in Jefferson City, MO. I am in level six out of eight levels. I have dance every night of the week except Friday’s and Sunday’s. I just recently got pointe shoes in ballet!

I do all styles of dance and love them all!

There are many auditions and performances in the dance world. During auditions, I can’t tell you how important it is to have character in your dancing. Don’t be afraid to add style and personality into your audition dances. (unless choreographed to have a certain style or told differently.) No matter what type of dance you are doing have confidence, even if the girl standing next to you has more technique than you do. Don’t think negatively! Catch the judges eye with confidence and if you see someone doing something you like, use it, make it your own.

Another big aspect of auditions is what you wear. Surprisingly your outfit does make a difference in your auditions! During auditions, it’s always best to wear tightly fitted clothes so they can see your body form and your positioning. I also think the outfit should coordinate with the type of dance and song you are dancing to.

Before every audition, it is very important to be at least forty-five minutes early. Most auditions don’t start off with a warm up. Showing up prepared and early allows you time to stretch and run the dance a few times before the auditions start. If you are lucky, maybe a judge will notice you during warm-ups. Depending on the audition you may need to bring a headshot.

The headshot allows the judges to remember who you are after watching many dancers perform.

FEATURED Don’t be stressed before the audition; it is the worst thing you can do. Get lots of sleep the night before the audition, stretch and drink a lot of water!

The morning of the audition eat something light. An example would be a banana or yogurt. Make sure you are kind and have good sportsmanship because you never know the person you are auditioning with, could be the person you’re auditioning for one day! Don’t stand in the front if you don’t have the dance completely down. Which brings me to detail, make sure you pay attention when you’re learning the dance and know every detail, because one detail that you missed could cost you your audition and you work too hard for that. The worst thing you can do is be upset or even quit if you don’t make it through the audition. It should actually make you work harder so you can show the judges you got what it takes next time!

Getting nervous isn’t fun for anyone. If you are one of those people who get nervous before you go on stage, then try this fun tip! Close your eyes, and find a place that makes you travel to somewhere new. You use your imagination to relax and not think about who is in the audience. When you’re on stage, you can go to that place and block out the crowd. It can be funny, inspirational and more! Don’t worry about who is watching or what is going to happen. Own the stage and take a deep breath! The night before you perform, make sure you are prepared. Have everything ready and laid out.

Have two pairs of all your tights in case a hole gets in your tights or someone else forgot there’s. Stretch before you go to bed, so you are nice and rested the next day! Performances can be stressful but just have fun and do what you love! That’s what I do!

What is Challenge?

Challenge is a group of Catholic girls who get together every other week to talk about an issue in the world, do fun activities, and serve God. We first get a little snack. After that, our instructor, Miss Voss, tells us a theme and then we play a game and talk about that theme. For example, once when we were talking about how people see things differently. So, what we did was sit back to back, and one person had a piece of paper. The other picked a little piece of paper out of a jar and tried to tell them how to draw what it said on the little paper. Once you’re done explaining it, the person who was drawing tried to guess what it was. Sometimes, we watch videos to help us understand the theme as well.

In Challenge we do service work including singing Christmas carols and making crafts with the elderly. We sold Christmas Grams to our school to raise money for the Challenge summer camp and other activities. We are also having a bake sale soon.

I like Challenge because we learn about God and we can freely pray to Him. I also like Challenge because you can get away from drama. I think people in the Lady Spartan Challenge Club like Challenge because we can pray as a group. It is also a place where you could meet new people and make new friends. I too like Challenge for all of those reasons. That’s why I think all Catholic schools should have Challenge.

I hope you are inspired by Challenge Club. Maybe you could start your own club to learn more about Christ and live in your faith.

Anxiety Struggles

When my anxiety kicks in, I feel like I am stuck behind a wall. I hate not knowing what my life and the future will hold. Not knowing whether the guy I like actually knows my name, whether I should wear high tops or black flats, not to mention high school on the horizon. ANXIETY! It makes me second guess myself; my stomach turns into a ball of knots; my head pounds, and I’m full of doubt. “Nah. You’d look too stupid anyway.” On top of this, I am also shy; I hate being the center of attention and being applauded for good works.

If you feel this way too, you’re not alone. With all of this shyness, stress, and anxiety, you need to find a way to cope with your problems. I found music and acting as my outlet, yet my anxiety continues to find a way into my head.

This year our school musical is The Sound of Music. Now you’re probably thinking, “What’s wrong with that?” Well, it just so happens, I got the lead role. After I had got the part, my anxiety and stress had a huge party to celebrate the success of me being overwhelmed. My nights became full of homework, singing, and practicing lines. My personal time was limited, I was stressed to the max, and my stress and anxiety were busting at the seams.

I knew, in the end, it was going to be just fine. My parents kept encouraging me to do my very best, taught me ways to manage my priorities and keep the end in sight.

So in conclusion, we struggle. Nobody’s perfect. We have to deal.

Life is about overcoming our struggles. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

DEAR FUTURE ME Sometimes I get the feeling as though I can't breathe. It is so scary and I always think there is something wrong with me. I don't want to tell anyone about it though because I'm afraid of finding out that something really may be wrong. I just don't know what to do. Could there be a simple explanation for this and what can I do to stop it?

DEAR PAST ME This sounds like it could be an anxiety attack and if that is the case then the shortness of breath is completely normal. I would still encourage going to see a doctor even though it may be scary. They are here to help you and a clean bill of health will certainly make you feel a lot better! In the meantime there are somethings that you can try. Anxiety has a lot to do with your thought process. Pay attention to the situations that are causing you to feel this way and see if you can determine what my be causing the attack. Also, try changing your thought process from negative to positive. Being positive can certainly reduce stress. One other thing to try is distraction. Try using your senses to focus on other things around you instead of the feeling of not being able to breathe. This may be as simple as rubbing your hand on your pant leg and focusing on the texture.

OVERCOMER STORY Cash me being a Conqueror how bout dat...

Hey guys, so I am guessing you’ve heard of the saying, “cash me outside how bout-dat.” It has been going around everywhere. It is one of the many new things coming at us every single day. Whether it’s new trends in clothes or new things happening in your school or at home, one thing that has always been around us is fear, also known as anxiety. F-E-A-R, four letters that affect us so much! I know it has me! Fear has always been a big thing in my life. Sorry, let me introduce myself. My name is Arika! I am a 16-year-old girl that is currently in high school. I love riding horses and l love being involved in school! Yes, school. Sometimes school can be scary. With everything that is going on around us, it is easy to get caught up in making sure that we “fit in” or that we have lots of Instagram likes. So, here is my story on being more than a conquer. One day, I was sitting at home with a message on my heart, something that the Lord was telling me to say. I grabbed my computer, and I started sharing the Lord’s message about confidence. I really believe that this is what God wanted me to do. I wanted to post it right away on Facebook for all my friends to see, but suddenly it hit me. The four-letter word.

Fear! All these thoughts were running through my head saying, “What is everyone going to say about me?” “Are people going to judge me?” All of these negative things coming toward me immediately shut me down. I did not want to post it. Without my knowledge, my mom sent my video to my whole family. I got texts from my aunt saying how much she loved my video and asked me if she could post it.

What is everyone going to say about me?

STRICTLY TWEENS Thinking what to reply back to her, I stopped and thought to myself, which is more important Arika, caring what everyone thinks about me or having the power to do something about it. I texted my aunt and told her, yes you can post it. The next morning, I woke up with a bunch of text and phone calls saying how much God’s message influenced them. I also saw that over 3 thousand people viewed my video. It blew my mind. Getting rid of all the negative thoughts and stepping out of my comfort zone lead me to spread God’s message, which I believe with all my heart. I am not saying that getting out of your comfort zone is easy, but sometimes we have to take a leap of faith. When you try a new sport for the first time, you learn how to play the game and practice it over and over again until you feel confident. Now that I have gotten out my comfort zone, I have been finding myself doing it every day! Recently I started doing makeup videos I never thought I could do because of fear. Now I enjoy posting them and having fun with them. What is your fear? I know you have one. Now tell me what you can do to start facing your fears. Give me ways that you can slowly start overcoming your fear because I know you can! You know you can too! I want YOU to start right now.

It does not have to be big, but once we start overcoming challenges, looking back you’re going to think why did I wait this long? Are you ready?! Let’s look fear right in the eye and say not today; I am an overcomer!

Counselor’s Corner Worry, anxiety, and stress are normal parts of being human. Most of the time they come in harmless phases and can include situations like: “If I don’t get good grades in middle school, I won’t get into honors classes in high school. Then I won’t get accepted to a good college and won’t get a good job.”

“Mom and Dad are fighting all the time lately. I wonder if they’ll get a divorce.

What will I do?”

“I really don’t like playing basketball. I wish I could just do something I want to do instead, but Mom would be so disappointed in me.”

“I can’t believe she told him I like him more than a friend. She promised she wouldn’t say anything! I’m so embarrassed. There’s no way I’m going to school today.”

When the worry starts to feel like it’s too much, you might try talking to someone about it. Most times adults do a pretty good job of listening and helping to figure things out, but sometimes the message can come across like this: “Let it go.”

“Be positive.”

“Think about all the reasons you don’t have to worry.”

“Get over it.”

“Stop being such a worrier.”

“It’s not that big of a deal.”

“It’s all going to work out just fine. You’ll see.”

Then you might start thinking, “Uhhhhh, yeah adults. Thanks for the advice.

If it were that easy, I would have done something about it a long time ago!

Sheesh!”

So what’s the answer? What do you do to deal with all the stuff that bombards you, whether it has to do with grades, friends, sports, social media, family, insecurities, the future? It’s not going to be easy, but it IS possible.

You CAN feel better with practice. Here’s one way to look at it. If your math teacher says on a Monday morning, “Okay, guys, this Friday you’re going to be tested on everything you’ve learned from the beginning of the school year up to this point.” First of all, you’d probably be thinking, “Ugh, are you kidding me?!?” “I do NOT need this right now!” Maybe you start noticing a few butterflies fluttering around in your stomach. Your chest might start to tighten up a bit. But let’s say, you get to class Friday morning of the test and you completely spaced studying. YIKES! Your thoughts will probably start to race; “Oh my gosh. What am I going to do?” “I’m totally going to fail this test!” “My parents are going to kill me!” Your stomach is doing flip flops to the point you’re feeling nauseous. Your body temperature shoots up like you walked into a 100-degree room and your heart rate skyrockets as if you just finished sprinting a race in a track meet. How do you think you’re going to do on the test? Well, if you’re anything like me, probably not very well.

It is the same thing with worry, anxiety, and stress. If you don’t prepare, it’s going to be pretty tough to remember what to do to calm down enough to pass the stress test if you don’t practice beforehand. So you might be wondering, “Okay, lady so what am I supposed to do?” Well, first things first.

Know that you’re not the only one. Did you know that everyone worries, adults included? It’s a part of being human. Worry protects us from all sorts of things like getting to shelter when a storm is coming or using hot pads to take a pizza out of the oven. The problem is when people start to worry excessively, need reassurance from others, expect themselves to be perfect, are hard on themselves, etc. That’s when a phase becomes more than just a phase. If this is the case for you, still, you’re not alone. According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), 1 in 8 kids (that’s millions!) can be affected by an anxiety disorder. Here are some things that can help:

1. Throw Out the Negative Thoughts. According to a recent Ohio State University study, a group of people were asked to write down negative thoughts on pieces of paper, then later rip them up and throw them away. Another group was asked to do the same thing except to keep the pieces of paper. Guess what? The researchers found that throwing away the paper literally discarded the thought mentally. Neat, huh?

2. Take a walk outside. A study done at Stanford University found that being in nature improved thinking and reduced stress.

3. Try an app. Try out the apps Smiling Mind and Settle Your Glitter.

Both are free!

4. Find a quote or song lyric you like. Write it out forwards with your right hand, then backwards. Write it out again, this time with your left hand forwards, and backwards. If you’re focused on writing, what are you not focused on? Right, the worry.

5. Laughter. Did you know there is such a thing as laughter therapy?

Yup, it’s called Gelotology. Laughter is a great way to stop anxiety in its tracks. It can decrease stress-related hormones, stimulate the production of endorphins (which are natural pain killers) and relax muscles.

So how about it? Get outside, trash some negative thoughts, listen to your new favorite song and tell some cheesy jokes. Here, I’ll start...Why did the scarecrow get promoted? See if you can figure it out.

Oh, and most importantly, remember...you don’t have to do this on your own.

Be there for each other because not one of you is alone in this worrisome, anxiety filled, stressful world. Take it from me; I was always a worried kid.

With practice and being kind to yourself, it can and does get better.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Actually all of my favorite hobbies involve some kind of physical activities.

Most of my freetime I spend with going swimming, weight lifting and riding my motorcycle, for which it often consumes too much time. Of course hanging out whith my friends is plays a big role as well.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is Schnitzel and mushed potatoes (of which I think the best ones always came from my hostmom Andrea Anderson) Sometimes I do enjoy having junk food also.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is "of mice and men" which I read when I was in highschool three years ago.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite classes are PE of course, but I also like physics and biology What is the biggest difference between Texas and Germany?

To me the biggest difference between Texas and Germany is the size of everything. "Everything is bigger in Texas" Roads are wider, fridges are bigger, neighborhoods are bigger, and people drive huge trucks which I like :D 48

Tips: Calming Down when Anxious

Anxiety haunts teenagers and many adults in this day and age. Especially teens, with judging and drama, it can stay on their shoulders like a bad haircut. Along with suffering from anxiety itself, you get anxiety and/or panic attacks. That insane feeling when the room spins and your breathing hitches. Calming down is hard and necessary.

To help calm down, focus on what you see, smell, hear, taste, and feel. Focusing on your five senses can help distract you from the panic and anxiety.

Look around and start describing what is around, either in your head or aloud.

Try guided imagery. Visualize something relaxing. Focus on the details. It’s kind of like your “happy place.” Focus on the small details of this happy place to help calm down. When your mind stays put on small things, it stays off of the anxiety, Distract yourself. Count backwards or recite your favorite song. Distraction is a very good way to get your mind away from panic. Focus on something that takes concentration.

Pat your thighs with your hands in a rhythmic way. Do it as if you were the percussion section of an orchestra and it’s up to you to keep the beat. You want to do 20 pats; the rhythm is important for regulating your breaths, your thoughts, and your heartbeat.

I highly hope that one or all of these will help you through your next attack.

Almost everyone has some form of anxiety, so just remember you are not alone. Ever. Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses. Just remember these tactics, and I’m sure it will be smooth sailing!

Make-Up Your Mind!

Makeup can be so confusing; especially with the harsh, judging eyes of our peers today. So, tips are always handy!

Black eyelash glue! I one-hundred percent recommend using black eyelash glue if you use fake eyelashes. White glue usually shows, and clear doesn’t dry clear.

Another plus with the eyelash glue is that it gives a perfect eyeliner. All you have to do is add the wing! Protip for the wing: Draw an invisible line from your nose to the end of your eyebrow. At your eye, it should give you a line up for the perfect wing!

Makeup is expensive! You all have to agree with me there. So, drugstore dupes are great! I got the best powder I’ve ever used from a local dollar store! I recommend that before you get that expensive NARS foundation, you should look up some dupes from Walmart or a dollar store.

A good way to get that matte powder look is baking! If you have a n=beauty blender or any sponge, it’s easy to do! You take loose powder and dab the sponge or blender into the powder. After that, wipe it anywhere that has shine or grease. Some people say to put it one before powder, I recommend it afterward. After five-ten minutes, take a powder or full-face brush and blend into oblivion!

If you want your eyes to look wider or more awake, then put a light white or nude shade in the inner corner of your eyes. It makes your eyes look a little bigger, but it mostly adds a more alive look.

Another tip if you want bigger eyes, put white eyeliner on your lower waterline. Black makes your eye color pop more, but if you want wider eyes, I recommend the white eyeliner.

Parent’s Corner I am a single mother of two, a son and daughter; my daughter is in the 7th grade and attends Lange Middle school, my son is in the 10th grade at Battle High School. Both of my children are very active in school, which leaves me being, mom, dad, taxi driver, doctor and the list can continue.

Monday through Friday my day begins at 6 am and ends close to 10 pm.

I rarely get to spend time to myself and when I do get that time I just like to relax and do absolutely NOTHING! We all read books and stories about what we should do for ourselves and how to make life easier and of course I have tried them all (or at least some of them), but it never lasts too long. To make my household work, we have to keep schedules, I need to know what day each child has to be where, what time they begin and end, how much money do you need and how are you getting home?

When these four questions have been answered my stress and anxiety levels are pretty normal but if I don’t know them…… it is a tornado!! Now that the weather has broken and our days are longer, my goal is to have more leisure activities: walking, yard work, etc.. I think this is my start!

Being a parent is far from easy, and I guess I got the wrong memo when I was told that it got easier as they grew. As an adult, I know that taking time for myself is needed but I know the reward, in the end, is going to be much greater and that is being a proud parent of two successful young adults. Then my children can take care of me!!
