First off I would like to thank Girls Stem Insititute, Global Prep Academy and Catch the Stars founda- tion on letting BoldlyU be a part of their organi- zation and school. With these partnerships we can help make a differnce in tweens and teens lives by the power of sharing their thoughts and reading that there are kids going through simialir things. The one thing that I have learned working with kids through BoldlyU the last 6 years, is the wealth of knowledge they have. When you take the time to just sit and listen and hear, really hear what their perspec- tive on things of the world, your mind will be blown. Once agian when I sat down with the kids from Glob al Prep Acendemy they didn't disappoint. From what is going on in the school, the community, the nation and the world they were aware of it all. They really could change the world. As you will see while rea- ding their articles in the upcoming pages.

OUR MISSION:

BoldlyU Magazine is specifically designed for tweens, to encourage them to be brave, to be bold and to be themselves by providing a place for them to share their stories, struggles and passions. It is a posi tive resource to empower them to build confidence within themselves while also helping others!

DIY Sling Sandals

Buy a pair of flip flops (I bought mine from my local dollar store, they had a great selection of fun colors)

1/4 yard of stretch knit fabric (will have leftovers)

Directions:

With old scissors that you don’t mind ruining, cut top pieces off of flip flop, so you are left with only the sole of the shoe. Cut two strips of knit fabric at 5″ wide by 22″ long and two strip at 5″ wide by 11″ long.

Starting with a 5″ by 22″ piece, fold into thirds lengthwise. Wrap around the back of your heel and tie a knot near your big toe. Push excess fabric through the top hole in flip flop sole and tie a knot on bottom. Push knot into indentation in the bottom of the sole. Using a 5″ by 11″ piece of fabric, wrap around the top of your foot and insert each end into holes on sides of sole. Tie a small knot on bottom of sole, making sure that the fabric is taught, not tight on your foot. Again, tuck the knot into the indentation on bottom of sole.

Repeat on the other shoe.

Anymore, an Article about the Lives of Tornadoes

Did you know that tornadoes are always results of thunderstorms? Or that the Tornado Alley (Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Missouri, Illinois, New Mexico, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Colorado) are the states with the highest number of tornadoes? Well, if you didn’t know, you do now! The slender, spinning columns of air, known by most as tornadoes, contains three main stages: formation, maturity, and decay.

Once the tornado is fully formed, it gathers strength and speed as it is at the peak of its life. When a tornado is mature, it can either be very skinny and last for a few seconds or roughly two miles wide and last for hours. The force of a full-blown tornado can be observed in this quote from Bolt out of the Blackness: Omaha, Nebraska: “When the storm struck the town, houses literally tumbled down the street like tumbleweeds.” In the North of the equator twisters spin counterclockwise, while in the south of the equator twisters spin clockwise. However, in both places a tornado is only slowed when it goes over water thus going into its decay.

After the cyclone reaches its peak, the thunderstorm that created the terrible twister returns it to the air. Because a cyclone needs warm, moist air to continue powering on, if the cyclone is bombarded with cool, dry air it is weakened. When the tornado is decaying/dissipating a thin rope-like configuration of wind is seen in the sky. That stage in a tornado’s life is called “rope stage”. If you are thinking of coming out of your safe shelter, be sure to check to see if the whirlwind of a tornado is in its rope stage.

The three stages: formation, maturity, and decay create terrible but intriguing wonders to observe from a very far place. But if you see the sky in your vicinity turn green or yellow, don’t hop in your car and try to drive far away so that you can get a good look at coming tornado. Instead, find the nearest safe shelter and get there as fast as you can. Although they may be cool, cyclones are not the ideal storm to experience first-hand. Sydney,

PIGS

Since my favorite animal is a pig, a lot of questions I have is what could lead to pigs becoming extinct? Some ways that pigs could go extinct is if hunters were to shoot every pig, or even if the pig’s food is poisoned could lead to the extinction of pigs.

Gas Prices Rising

My name is Oliver and I will be telling you about the gas prices rising. The gas price rising is a problem because it means that people would have to spend more money on gas than they used to. Leading to people wasting more money on gas than other important needs in life. With less money, people wouldn’t be able to pay for their house, apartment, or even their car because most of the money is going towards gas. In my opinion, I believe that the reason the gas prices are rising is because of Russia. The U.S. is currently helping Ukraine in the war that is going on between Russia and Ukraine causing the gas prices to rise. I also believe that it is not fair that Russia rises the gas prices just because the U.S. is doing what they believe they should be doing in helping Ukraine. The states with the highest gas prices include California, Nevada, and Hawaii. I feel that it is not fair that they also raise the gas prices for certain European countries because they believe that they should also be punished. After doing some research I found that they have gas prices at $2:10, while we have gas prices at $4:09. I believe through this they are making their gas prices cheap so that people will come to Russia and make Russia more popular. Leading them to the idea that Russia would hopefully be more powerful and overtake Ukraine. Putin, who is the leader of Russia, is not very kind.

Hijabs banned in India

In India, the Muslim people are moving from India to other places. Mostly they are moving from India back to their homes. The reasoning is mostly from the banning of hijabs in India. In Karnataka which is a state in India, high school girls were stopped by their school because of the hijabs they were wearing. Leading them to not being able to enter the school because of the equality and judgment the students could face. Though it was weird that students couldn't wear hijab, but teachers could wear hijabs. In the end, I really don’t care if it is for equality. The students should be able to wear whatever they want to wear. Chance

The idea to help under privileged youth was a goal of Tommy's. Throughout the year, Tommy, Phillip, Quinton and Joshua played on 12 different sports teams. Subway Shooting

In the subway shooting that has occurred they currently have a suspect name Frank R. James. What happened is that he released 8 smoke bombs. These smoke bombs are really damanaging to the human bodies for they contain really toxic chemicals. Once the smoke bombs clear Mr. James began to shoot which led to 29 people being injured and 10 deaths. Once everything had happened at the crime scene they could only find his backpack and credit cards. In his backpack he had a handgun, fireworks and smoke bombs. In the end the F.B.I. were able to track him down through the credit cards that he used to purchase a U-Haul that was found leading them to suspecting him of this crime.

That led to the sparks from the fire being able to land on the ground. In the occurrence of powerful wind, the wind could shift the fire to the forest, leading to the fire spreading and burning the whole forest.

I've only met 2 kids that I believe are smart- er than me. Oliver is one of them. I have had the pleasure of meeting such an amazing young man. He might have been younger than me but he taught me a lot. I gave Oliver and the oth- er kids in the class a question with things that I learned in the 8th grade. It took him a little while but he figured it out all on his own. Some- times I would get something wrong and him and his brother would catch it before I would. In the future I see him as the head of NASA being the world's smartest scientist.

Ezra

Ezra the other kid that made me think twice about my answer sheets. Altho he was very smart, he was a bundle of fun and joy. Full of energy all he wanted to do was play I declare facts. I believe he could do anything if candy was on the table. He has an outgoing personali- ty that can bring you out of the dumps. In the future I could see him as the president of the world.

-Past You

My parents have been divorced for a few months now and I think I’ve dealt with it okay. I go between my mom and dad’s house every few weeks and it seems to be going alright. But this is going to be the first time I’m going to have to choose which family to spend the holidays with. I’ve always been closer with my mom, but my favorite cousins are on my dad’s side. Both of them are trying to bribe me over with big gifts and promises of fun vacation spots, but I don’t want to have to pick sides. I feel like no matter what I do, I’ll end up hurting someone’s feelings.

-Past You

DEAR FUTURE ME DEAR PAST ME

Holidays with separated families can definitely be difficult. It’s important to know that you are not alone in this though! Many kids and tweens struggle with trying to “pick the right side” and avoid hurting their parents. This time of the year should be about love and compassion, not manipulation. In such an important time of the season, you could try to make a compromise by spending one holiday with your mom’s side, and another with your father’s side. Most of the time this can make everyone happy without having to make a big sacrifice on anyone’s part or feeling like you have to pick a favorite. However, this isn’t always an option. If this is the case, I suggest doing whatever is going to be healthiest for you and will make you feel better. I guarantee your parents will love you no matter who you choose to spend this time with, so you should focus on your wellbeing rather than trying to please them.

Growing to yourself.accept

Accepting yourself can be hard especially when you're in middle school. There is always going to be a group of "popular" kids, and you might be different from them, but that's fine. It's good to be different when you are "different." You're not really different at all your just simply you. Being yourself is prob- ably the best way to make friends. If you act like a different person around new people, then they will like you for who you aren't. How- ever, if you are who you truly are, they will like you for you. Don't try and change yourselves for your "friends." If they are truly your friends, they will love you for you.

OVERCOMER

Words of Wisdom

The transition from childhood to becoming a teen is difficult. School work gets harder, work loads get heavier, and you go through physical, mental, and emotional changes. My personal experience was that I was stressed. Work was hard and my grades dropped. I started to struggle to find things that I enjoyed. But the obstacle that had the biggest impact on me was the world-wide pandemic - Covid 19. By the end of my 6th grade year, my mother chose to take me out in-person learning and transition me to online education. The hardest part of the transition was communication. Online schooling was new to me. As a result, it was difficult for the teachers as well as students and parents to communicate with one another. My biggest challenge was being able to talk with my friends.

The year that I started my online education was my first year attending middle school and was also a new school for me. I had to make new friends and meet new teachers. Making friends was not a problem for me because everyone was amiable and I fit in easily. The challenge was keeping those connections during the pandemic when I was taking online classes for the end of 6th grade year and my entire 7th grade year. I did not have my own phone. Unable to socialize with my friends made my days monotonous and boring sometimes. I did not feel like doing school work because I was at home. I lived an isolated lifestyle for over a year, but I am glad that I kept pushing forward.

I know you have heard of sayings like, “there’s a light at the end of the tunnel” or “there is a silver lining.” These may seem cliche, but they are true. I have always heard that “God has a greater plan for you”.Have faith in God. Through all of the struggles that you may face, just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that there is a purpose for the path that you are on. When it is over, look back, reflect, and be proud that you persevered through it all.

Ukraine and Russia

Ukraine and Russia are currently in a war that is pretty much being considered World War 3. The reason for this is mostly because of money and argument over silly stuff. As of current events all of Ukraine and Russias allies are just bombing eachother. Like Russia putting a sonic bomb in Ukraine and Ukraine attacking back by bombing Russia's boats. This is now leading to the injury of many soldiers and civilians.

THE KNOW HOW
38 May/June

Reason the Ukraine and Russia War Started

The war between Ukraine and Russia started in 2014 when Ukraine wanted to join Nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organization.) Russia was against this; leading to a disagreement that led to the war that is currently going on. This war has led to a huge amount of Ukraine and Russian soldiers injured, leading to many civilians leaving the country. The war is stil ongoing to this day, with russia bombing many places in Ukraine. Damagining its communication system. Currently the U.S. has impassed many sanctions on Russia such as not allowing some countries to do business with them or even buying their military weapons or products from them. Although many countries are still in a signed deal with Russia for cheaper gas like India that is currently in place. Though they are not allies with Russia as of current events.

What was the worst attack that Russia did to Ukraine?

The worst attack that Russia had done to Ukraine is when Russia let off a bomb in Ukraine that polluted the air. Since India was one of Ukraines allies they got some of their planes and put civilians of Ukraine on there to keep them safe. People of Ukraine also hid in bunkers to get away from cha-

Russia Cyber attacking the U.S.

Through the information I have gathered I found a group called APT29, or Cozy Bear. They are working for Russia’s foreign intelligence service that breached multiple U.S. government agencies. Including the treasure, energy departments and the national nuclear security administration. I believe that they did this because they wanted to cause something bad to happen that could lead to the deaths of many people, even probably framing it onto the U.S. Leading this to potentially be the biggest cyberattack since 2011. This is when 200,000 computers were hacked in about 150 countries stealing loads of money. They were able to do this through ransom. Ransom is when you block someone's personal data and be able to get the amount of money you would want or even more personal information. So as hackers they would be able to get into the government files and wouldn’t be able get the information back without paying the hackers. My opinion about cyberattacks is that they are bad and are considered a criminal attack. The way that we can stop cyberattacks is by getting antivirus and by getting massive security that will be able to stop viruses from attacking our corporations and government.

Health & Wellness Self Care

Life can be very stressful, busy, and sometimes hard. You are not alone if you feel this way. No matter where you are or how old you are, there are things that make you worried or overwhelmed. It is a natural response from your brain that comes from sensing danger,so your brain is getting your body ready to fight or run for protection. Unfortunately, this does not change as you get older. This is why it is so important to take time for yourself. If you learn strategies about how to deal with busy, stressful times now, you can use these strategies for the rest of your life.

There is no right way to take care of yourself or re- charge. It can look very different for everybody. The important thing is that the activity is something you enjoy. In general, you can consider these categories, but like I said, there are many others.

Exercise: Whether it be running, biking, skating, swimming, or dancing, this is a proven way to relieve stress. When we exercise and get our heart rates up, the body releases chemicals, or neurotransmitters, which signal your brain to do the opposite of what your body does when you are stressed. It also makes us feel strong and confident which is very important!

Art: Painting, music, singing, photography. Sometimes being still and losing yourself in beauty is a good way to reset your brain and gain perspective on what you are going through. Science has shown that music tells your brain to release those same chemicals that make you feel happy and tell your excited body systems to slow down and relax.

THE KNOW HOW
42 May/June

Meditation: This word may make you picture a certain image when you hear it, but meditation can look different every time you do it. It simply means to be still and reflect or think about something. Some people find it helpful to recite a phrase to help calm themselves and clear thoughts from their mind. Oth- ers will focus on breathing in and out. And still others will use body movement through yoga or tai chi to help clear thoughts and center themselves.

These are just a very few examples of ways to help take care of yourself and reset your mind. You may have heard of this new buzz word “ Mindfulness” which is sweeping the country. It means to live with intention, listen to your body, and take time to recognize what emotions you may be feeling. It is taking the time to think if these emotions are good or ones that you don't like.

The next time you feel off, ask yourself, “What am I feeling?,” and decide if it is good or otherwise. If it is stress, try some of these methods and afterward ask yourself the same question. Hopefully you will have a different answer. Be patient with yourself. Self care is a skill you continue to develop throughout your entire life. But if you start now, you will be masters by the time you reach adulthood and will be ready to face the new challenges that come with age.
