Letter from the Editor So many people think that giving back to people is all about money, but for me personally it really has very little to do with money. Yes, we all need money to survive, but we don't always need money to make a difference. Giving back can be as simple as giving a hug to someone that looks lonely, or a smile to brighten a person's day. This is one of the many reasons why I started BoldlyU and the BoldlyUs Committees. Just by telling our experiences and stories, we can make a huge difference in people's lives. Sometimes we get lost in this broken world and think that difficult things only happen to us, but in all reality, they happen to everyone. Some things might not seem as bad as what we are going through, but I can guarantee that by sharing your story you can help someone going through something very similar. By being a part of a BoldlyUs Committee, you can make sure your voice is heard, and you can start making a difference in people's lives by giving back. Our committees have every different kind of kid involved, and that is what we love! To get to the real heart of what is going on in our world today nobody has a bigger, brighter, more powerful thought process than our tweens. I know, I know, as parents we have trouble seeing that but if you really dig into their lives and truly listen to their stories I will guarantee you that you will be just as amazed as I was. That is why BoldlyU and our BoldlyUs Committee's are giving back something much greater than money; they are giving help and awareness to help other kids to see that they are not alone in this journey called life. If you would like to know more about a BoldlyUs committee in your area or you would like to start one, please email me at darla@boldlyu.com.

ENJOY!

Phone Case Design

First, buy a cheap, light colored phone case that fits your phone. Pick out your favorite nail polish colors! Come up with your design! Use your imagination or get a little inspiration from the internet! Lay your blank phone case on newspaper, papertowels etc. to make sure you don't make a mess on anything important.

5. Design your new phone case!

Tips:

If your design calls for dots, try cutting off the tip of a Q-tip to make your dots. If it includes lines, try using tape to help keep your lines straght!

The Power of Music Music is a way for people to break free and get away from everything and everybody. When you feel sad, listening to music can send you to a happy place until you feel better. It also helps with your confidence, and it can bring people together who have nobody. When they listen to music, they feel like they are very happy even if they are alone. I personally like to listen to music to make myself feel better. Although, even when I am happy I still listen to it.

Music Facts: In 1000 CE Guido D’Arezzo made many improvements in music theory. He first improved and reworked standard notation to be more user-friendly by adding time signatures. Then he invented solfege. This is the vocal note scale: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do.

on and off the court!

My hero is an amazing guy on and off the court. My hero is Steph Curry. He’s my hero because he works hard and he also strives for greatness. At one point in time, Steph Curry was not the best basketball player, but his confidence and his hard work got him to where he wanted to be. For that, he’s my hero because people never believed in him and everybody doubted him. Nobody believed in him but himself. A lot of great players get criticism like that, I even do sometimes, and that is why Steph Curry is my hero. I feel like we have things in common. One day I wish to be like Steph Curry because he’s also a leader and leaders make heroes. My hero Steph has helped me in many ways, such as developing different moves to save my game and make it better. Steph is my hero because he is just an all around great person and one day I wish to be like that.

Mushroom Hunting Mushroom Hunting is one of my passions. It is similar to an Easter egg hunt except the eggs could be hidden anywhere in the state. My family and I hunt four different kinds of mushrooms. One of the most common mushrooms we hunt is called a Morel mushroom. Although some people are unsure of eating wild mushrooms, Morels are very distinctive which makes them easy to identify. Morel mushrooms like to grow in wet, humid forests. The main tree they grow on is Elm trees, and they are decomposers, so they like rotting things. If you see an uprooted elm tree, you should check the root ball for Morels. Another tip is when you find one Morel there is almost always more around it. Morel Hunting season starts in mid-April and ends in mid-May. It is always helpful to use a walking stick in the woods to push over leaves and look through tall grasses. I hope you try mushroom hunting this year and remember to watch out for ticks and snakes.

Fashion: What You Need For Track 1. Running Shoes Your shoes are the most important thing to choose when shopping for the upcoming track season. Everyone’s feet are different, so don’t necessarily get the shoes that everyone else is wearing. They may not suit you well. Also, pick a shoe that feels good as opposed to a shoe that looks amazing. I would take a W over nice shoes any day.

2. Spikes You don’t need spikes, but they’re great to have. Make sure you know what kind you’re getting. If you do a sprinting event, you don’t want to get long-distance shoes or vice versa. Most importantly, don’t ever wear your spikes to practice. The ONE time you should wear spikes to practice is the day before your first meet. This way, you can get a feel of how the shoes perform. Spikes, just like your track uniform, are supposed to make you feel fast and weightless during a meet. The idea is that if you wear your normal clothes and normal shoes to practice, then wearing your spikes will make you feel faster and more confident.

3. Sweats Sweats are very useful for track. You should keep your sweats on during warm-ups, after warm-ups, and even up until the moment before you run. Sweats help keep your body heat in and the sun’s energy-sucking rays out. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but keeping your sweats on can have a major impact on your performance. Here’s a list of other items that are optional for training during track: Compression pants Headbands

World Problems:

My name is Aiyanna, and one thing that I struggle accepting in this world is the fact that there are things that people are aware of that is going on, but they do nothing to try and help the situation. They don’t even come up with an idea that would actually help the world. For example, better solutions for all the wildfires that are going on, other than spraying powder all over the woods, would be to use all of the bad water that America wastes every year (40 million swimming pools and 24 million baths). If someone would transfer that water, then maybe the fires would go out faster. Then there’s also voting, about 80 million people who do not vote on election day, when if they would have voted we may not have had all of the protesters walking around holding signs. The decision would have been way clearer! Anyway, I am just here to tell you that if you see all of the problems around you, don’t let them build up because otherwise our world will be filled with even more problems.

Things to do during

SPRING BREAK

If you’re not planning on taking a big trip with your family or friends for spring break, you may be wondering what to do to keep yourself busy and have fun when you’re out of school. Some lucky kids get to go to exotic places for spring break, but if you’re planning on staying local this year, I have a few ideas to keep you from getting bored this spring break. There are many indoor activities you can do, such as coloring or painting. Watching a movie with your friends or family is always fun! You can also do your favorite activity/ hobby- for example; I’m excited to make some crochet hats this spring break. You could also dive into a new book. The library is always open, and the librarians have great suggestions for new books. I also love to hang out with friends, and sleepovers are a great way to pass the time. Another idea would be to play a video or board game or hang out with your family. Some outdoor activities you could do to keep yourself busy are playing your favorite sports. I’m lucky to live in a neighborhood, and I love to play basketball with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. You could use your imagination and invent a new game to play with friends. You could also go to the park or take a hike. My suggestion is to do your best to hang out with other things than your devices!

K-9 Officer Mike Parsons

I’m 39, married, and have four kids. I’ve been a police officer for 15 years and have worked for the Columbia Police Department for 19 and a half years. I got into police work because my friend in high school was going into policing and it sounded fun. My friend’s dad was a police officer, and my friend always had cool stories about what his dad had done the night before. I didn’t do it for the power, the uniform, or the pay. I’m a regular guy with a family to take care of. I’m not made of stone, and I have feelings. I hate it when I see bad cops on TV doing the wrong thing. It makes the world think we’re all bad and we’re not. We’re just ordinary people trying to help our communities by doing what we think is right, not emotionless robots who are programmed to ruin your day when you speed, beat someone, or anything in between. Come to us for help, and we’ll do our best. Don’t be afraid or mad at us for something you saw on Facebook or YouTube because we’re just like you, trying to get by.

Helping People in Your Community

FEATURED

As a part of NJHS (National Junior Honor Society), we had to complete eight service hours helping someone we weren’t related to. I chose to work at a family friends shop on Main St. called Your Money’s Worth Antique Mall. The owner, Sandy, thought it was a great idea. It took a total of six weeks to complete my hours; I went in once a week for about 1-2 hours. After I had completed my hours, I kept going, helping out was actually really fun. I’ve learned some relatively basic skills of retail like, using a cash register and counting back change. I also learned some decent people skills such as patience and understanding. Though more recently, school has made me miss some days working with Sandy I still try to come out when I have the time. Throughout this experience, I’ve realized how much fun and rewarding it is to help (even if it was a small task). There are many ways for you to get involved in your community. Talk to your neighbors, see if they need any help. If you know of any small businesses, then you could ask the owners if you could help out there. You can even get a group of friends and sign up to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, YMCA, or other organization. One small thing you can always do is pick of trash, you may not be part of an official clean up crew, but it will still help your community look clean and nice. If you are unable to find a way to help your community just help your family and friends. Asking for more chores around is always a great way to go. When visiting grandparents always ask if there’s something you can do to make the work easier on them. It’s always rewarding no matter how big or small the task. As long as the difference, as minor, as it seems is a good one. Keep on keepin on.

Meet Tommy! Hi, my name is Tommy. I am currently a seventh grader. I moved to Jefferson City from Chicago, IL last year. Yeah, sure I wasn’t very happy when I found out about it, but, I understood that moving would open a new chapter and a new adventure in my life. We landed in JC two weeks before school started. School was right around the corner, and I was getting nervous, but at least I knew a couple of kids from my grade, as well as 7th and 8th graders because of running cross country. I kept occupied by running cross country for my school as well as other school activities to meet new people. I am involved in Student Council, Boy Scouts, and robotics. I like to run cross country and track, and I took up a totally new sport for me, archery. The funny this is, I barely get tired after a cross country practice even though my legs hurt super bad. Running for me is pretty enjoyable because it keeps me moving and fit. I run with one of my friends that is a sixth grader now. The one thing that is hard about moving is leaving a place that you have known forever, your home and your old friends. I was really sad on moving day, but it still turned out to be ok for the rest of my family and me. I am enjoying the adventure that lays ahead of me. Also, I am still in touch with some friends from Illinois. Whenever I talk to one of them, I remember so many of our best memories. The lesson I learned is never to give up hope because anything can happen.

4-H

giving & leadership

Being in 4-H, one of the easiest ways to give back is by being a leader.
This can be as little as helping an elderly neighbor carry in their groceries or organizing a group of people to work at the local food bank.
Being in a leadership position with my 4-H club, I feel it’s very important to give back and get other people excited about giving back.
Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to hold an office or have a fancy title. It just means you can take charge and organize a project for you and your friends to do, or that you can speak up and say what’s on your mind or give your opinion on what you feel is right. A good leader also listens to other people’s ideas and opinions and puts them into consideration.
You don’t have to be in 4-H to be a leader. You can be a leader by suggesting that the sports team you are on should go and volunteer somewhere like The Food Bank, and help to organize it. You can even do something as simple as getting your friends or family together to make valentines/mothers/fathers day cards and take them to a local nursing home. It may seem like a small or silly thing, but you’ll bring a smile to someone’s face and that’s all that matters.

Basketball Highlights What Basketball has done for me... My name is Cross. I am a Basketball Player, but more importantly a Christian. The reason I say that is because my identity is in my Lord God. I play basketball wholeheartedly, and I take pride in wearing that cross on my jersey every time I step out on that court. I love the sport of basketball more than anything else. When I was just 4, I was diagnosed with Sports-Induced asthma. I always thought that I should just quit because I can’t do it, but there is nothing that can stop you from being the best rather than yourself. Your motivation is the key to making you who you are. My Lord God has blessed all of us with the ability to do anything we put our mind to. Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through HIM who strengthens ME.” Before every game, I pray and thank God for what he’s done for me. If anyone doubts you for any reason, know that it’s you who makes you who you are. Nobody can stop you from achieving greatness. Nobody.

Competitive Basketball... I play competitive sports to keep myself active. I also play to keep myself in shape. I play because my family loves to watch me play. It helps me work hard because other people want me to be the best, just as much as I want to be the best. My competitive teams help me stay focused. Competitive sports help me see that teamwork is better than a one-person game. For example, if you are trying to play a basketball team you can’t beat anyone by yourself. You would need all five players. You need to work as a team to beat the other team. It also helps me see that when we lose it is not a bad thing; it is a good thing because it helps us see that there are always ways to get better. It makes me want to work just as hard as they do to be as good as they are.

Business Highlight:

MIZZOUTHON MizzouThon, a chapter of the national program, Miracle Network Dance Marathon, is the largest student-run philanthropy at the University of Missouri. We work year-round to provide support, both financially and emotionally, to pediatric patients in mid-Missouri. 2 years ago, we made a fiveyear one-million-dollar pledge to renovate the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Missouri Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Our NICU donation adds to a continued five-year pledge to support the hospital’s TeleHealth Loving Care program, music therapy program, Cancer and Blood Disorders unit, and provide salaries for teachers who help hospitalized kids stay on top of their schoolwork. Yet what is incredibly special about our program aside from all the dancing, and fundraising is the close relationship we have with our Miracle Families. Miracle Families are ambassadors that have gone through MU Children’s Hospital at one time or another and help to educate participants on why we do what we do. These miracle ambassadors have ranging diagnoses from osteogenesis imperfecta to hemimegalencephaly, yet no matter their specific obstacles they all are incredible warriors. As college students on MizzouThon, we are our miracle’s bedside buddies, cheerleaders, best friends, and most importantly, their advocates. At MizzouThon, we believe that every child deserves the right to be a kid; meaning that childhood should be filled with fun and worry-free days, and less of worrisome hospital visits. We realize that this experience may not look the same for everyone, but every child deserves a chance to have a childhood defined by their aspirations as opposed to their limitations. By raising funds and awareness for our local hospital, and working closely with these miracle families, we are hoping to give kids some of their childhood back. Maybe that is first steps, or playing a musical instrument, or maybe even just an extra smile, everything we do is for them - for the kids.

I am part of the gifted program at my school, where I also have a bunch of super cool friends. I am a huge fan of science and everything science fiction (watch Black Mirror if you haven’t already, it’s on Netflix). I also love math, and I mean boring math. Sometimes, if I’m bored, I’ll just write out complicated, boring math problems and try to figure them out the best I can, then I check them with a calculator. My life sounds pretty boring, but it’s not, I promise. Those super cool friends I mentioned make my life less boring. I also have a super cool mom, and I’m not afraid to say my mom’s cool.

I still remain positive, but now I know how much energy chemotherapy takes out of you and it’s just really exhausting. I’m not attending school right now because it’s winter and everyone is sick. This might sound nice, but I can assure you, it is not. I don’t know if you know, but if you stay at home all day sleeping, it can make you feel like a real loser. I am not worried at all about my chances, and I have that super cool mom I mentioned earlier, who helps me stay positive and is always by my side. My sister also shaved her head, which she said was for me but I’m pretty sure it was just so her hair could grow back softer. She dyes her hair a lot, so it is usually like straw. It first began when I was a little preschooler, and our school was getting food for the Food Bank. I remember I wanted to empty our whole pantry! Then, that same year I started my first ever helping others project. We did a food drive with our friends and neighbors! The next year I did buddy packs and put up flyers. This finally brings us to Boys and Girls Club. I have been raising money for Boys and Girls Club for the last three years, and it has been wonderful. I absolutely love Boys and Girls Club. The reason I picked them is probably because of how well they take care of the kids. I helped raise money for gift cards for three Christmas parties. I enjoy seeing the happy and joyful looks on the kid’s faces when they get their presents. It’s just little things like that that make me want to help Boys and Girls Club and other groups that help the kids and families of Columbia. I am so thankful to have wonderful family members and friends to support me and all the businesses that helped by putting up flyers (Angelo’s, Bank of Missouri and Kilgore’s). I also want to say a huge thank you to Scotty and Cara at Clear 99 for talking about me on their station (I love their station) and Facebook page. We keep having to increase our goal because so many people are helping me. Last year our goal was $3,000, but we reached $4,000. Next year we are going for $5,000. Coyote Hill

SHOUTOUT A Safe Place to Be a Child...

When kids need a safe place to live, Coyote Hill can be that place. Coyote Hill Christian Children’s Home provides a home for children in foster care or children whose family is going through a crisis for however long they need. Our homes are set up as family style. Each home has a Home Parent mom and dad to run the home and give each child stability and support. Coyote Hill is located in Harrisburg, just north of Columbia. In addition to the homes where everyone lives, we have a horse arena with 14 horses; a swimming/ fishing lake; trails to explore; and playgrounds at every home. We want kids to just be kids.  Often children will live at Coyote Hill for a year or two while working with their biological family to return home. Sometimes returning home is not what is best, and adoption becomes a possibility. Freddy, age 14 found his family through adoption while living at Coyote Hill.  Regardless of why a child or sibling group comes to live at Coyote Hill, our desire is to make sure everyone knows that they are worthy of love and care. Each child deserves to know that someone cares for them deeply and is willing to show grace when they make a mistake, and help them make good future decisions. Coyote Hill is a place for kids to find healing from their past, hope for their future, and happiness in their present.

School Struggles I feel as though that I am sleep walking throughout my life. Or, at least, for the few years of my life now. I look down at the speckled floors as I walk to lunch, with kids speeding past me and laughing, while thinking to myself about how alone I feel. This whole school is based on who is dating who and who is the most undateable. Are you kidding me? Is this what we are going to base our lives around, the people who dress nice but talk crap behind you? I honestly hate it. I hate the small talk with people who forget your name once you walk away and the nervous laughter that comes from my lips to try to blend in. I hate trying to blend in. It’s so pointless. As I think about traveling and exploring new countries and my life ten years from now, people around are worried about who’s going shopping this weekend. Sure, I like to have fun and laugh with the crowd. But sometimes that laughter fades, and I wish I could be anywhere else. Anywhere but here. I wish I could click my ruby shoes and vanish into thin air, and to end up living my life somewhere where I could laugh because I want to, not because I feel pressured to do so. Where I could have conversations about love, heartbreak, and the evolution of humans and god and religion and things that seem too sad or depressing or deep for my age and the people around me.

However, I also love people and feel like I should be out hanging with friends more often. I just get so tired around them and it is hard to keep up the fun, silly act for very long. I'm torn between the person I want to be and the person I think I should be. I just want to feel okay for being who I am and still have friends. -Past You

DEAR PAST ME This is such a tough situation. I understand the struggle between being who you are vs. being who you think you should be. My advice is to embrace yourself, the person you know you are, whole-heartedly! This may be hard at first but ultimately you will never be able to truly change that person so embrace it! Also, I would set a certain number of times a week or month that you know that you want to spend time with your friends. By setting a number, you don't have to feel bad if you skip out here and there. When you are around your friends, don't try too hard. There are plenty of silly and outgoing people in this world already. It is okay to be the the listener that pipes in at just the right moments! True friends will love you for it! Never forget that there is only one YOU in this world, so be the best YOU you can be! -Future You

OVERCOMER STORY All my life I had no knowledge about self-respect and how I deserved to be treated. As a young girl, I was disrespected and used by almost every guy in my life starting with my biological father. As a young girl, your father should be the one you can count on the most, someone you can turn to or count on but I wasn’t able to have that with mine. He was abusive to my mother and emotionally abusive to me. He chose to give me up without a fight and walked out of my life. Life is hard enough for young girls without being hurt by those that are supposed to love you. Society makes it hard for girls, and we struggle with being insecure, and typically we look to guys for attention and answers. A year ago I was seeking attention from boys that were my age and older to just give me the attention I was craving. I was looking on the internet, school, anywhere I could find. I think I was trying to fill the void from my biological father giving me up and not wanting to be a part of my life. I would talk to a boy and as soon as he would ask for something I was eager to give because I didn’t want him to walk away and not want to talk to me.

e p o H dances in the puddles until the sun comes out again!

With LOTS of support from family, friends and my counselor I am starting to understand I don’t need a guy for anything now. I am starting to accept myself for who I am and realize if I want to change anything about myself it should be for me and not a boy. I am loving myself for who I am more and more every day. I am accepting my path, and I know now that everything happens for a reason, and I am starting to understand that this is a part of who I am and it’s helping me grow stronger and stronger. I am proud that I no longer put myself down, and I’m happy. I don’t feel the urge to reveal my body to please boys. It has taken a very long time to learn how I deserve to be treated and that I need to be respected in order to be pleased with myself. Looking back on my journey, I’m proud of the distance I have come, I now have hope for not only myself but other people that have or are going through a very rough time. No matter if I have a slip-up and get down, turning to my past habits are a buried thought in my mind. I need to make people proud and live on through my lost loved ones. I strive to be successful and be the best I can be, for me. Mental abuse and illness have traumatized me, I smile at the thought of the help that has been provided, and I will continue to accept and grow from it. I continue to improve myself daily, and I have great plans for myself. A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.

Counselor’s Corner Word: Need Part of speech: Verb Definition: Require (something) because it is essential or very important. Synonyms: covet, crave, desire, do without, and be derived of. The average human being requires 5 basic needs to physically survive: Oxygen, Water, Food, Shelter, Sleep Without these five basic needs, a human being cannot survive. Have you ever imagined not having one of these needs met? Have you ever gone days without knowing where your next meal will come from? Where you or your family will lay their heads at to sleep? These basic needs are a necessity to life. Now, this article is not to make you feel guilty about a lifestyle you may live. Only to maybe help you understand what need is, and the importance of how easily you can help. Here are some easy tips on doing just that.

1. Understanding the difference between want and need. Too often we find ourselves thinking that we need that new jacket in the window. When in reality we have 3 already.

2. Smile and be friendly. Sometimes a simple little thing

like a smile, can ease someone’s heart, and make their day a bit brighter.

3. Donate something you don’t use. Go to your closet and find the things you truly don’t wear anymore. Pack a box, and take them to a local charity, or clothes drive.

4. Create a care package. You see the same few guys on

the street and know they are there. Soup, reading material, socks, a blanket, make a great care package. Hand them out, or send them to the nearest homeless shelter.

“How fa r that litt le candle t hrows his beam ! So shines a good deed in a weary w orld.” -William Shakespe are

5. Lend your voice. Often times we know of a situation and neglect to tell someone.

The powerless need a voice to speak for them. You don't have to take the cause on by yourself, join others, seek council and make the need known.

6. Just be there. When someone you know is in need, sometimes it’s just as helpful to have a person sit and talk to.

7. Stop to help. A woman once stopped me and asked to use my cell phone, when I said yes she broke down in tears and said thank you are the 5th person I have asked. She had just needed to get a hold of her husband to come get her.

8. Volunteer. It is one of the most amazing things you can do.

9. Donate food. Clean out your cupboards, buy a few groceries and take them to the homeless shelter.

1O. LOVE. It all matters more than you know. 44 March 2017

TWEENS AROUND THE WORLD

Meet

Susanna From Italy

My name is Susanna, and I am a 17 years old girl from Italy. I have been fascinated by America since the first time I visited New York, 5 years ago. I like America because I like American people: everybody is nice and welcoming! I know four languages: Italian, English, French and Latin but I think English is the best one because if you know it, you can communicate with people from all over the world. Anyone can be an exchange student. You must work very hard and makes a lot of sacrifices before you start this experience. You must understand that you are leaving your family, your friends and your school for an entire year, so you also have to be sure your grades are good. You also have to be responsible and independent, because you have to create your new life alone without your family or your friends and be very open to new experiences. It is hard not to feel too much culture shock because everything is new and completely different. I decided to become an exchange student to create never-ending relationships with a new family and new friends and to learn better about the American country and culture There are a lot of differences between my country and America. The main one is school because in Italy it is boring and more difficult. We go to school six days a week, and we do not have sports at school. We study eleven subjects, and we do not experience anything that we are studying. For example, we have physical education, but we just study the human body. Or we have art, but we just study the history of the art. Furthermore, we have an oral test every day and for this reason, every afternoon when school finishes (at 1.00 pm) we just go home or to the library and study. Lastly, the teachers are very strict and mean. I was amazed the first day of American school because I could laugh with my teachers. When I grow up, I want to continue to study to become an engineer, like my dad, and I really wish I will be able to move to America. Because, thanks to this experience, I found out that I really love America with all my heart. For fun, during my free time, I really like hanging out with my friends and playing sports.

A Play Review I did a play called Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. So, originally I thought I was just supposed to help the first day, but the director ended up putting me in the assistant director/stage manager position. I felt really important, and I did kind of have a leadership position. The experience that I had was great. The director of the show was very organized and created a schedule for what days we were going to meet, where we were rehearsing, and who was needed at rehearsal. I, however, need to be at every rehearsal. As an assistant director I wrote down everybody’s blocking, that is where everybody is supposed to be during the show in case someone is sick. This was a lot of stuff to write. As we started getting closer to the end of the play, we go off script, and I went backstage. Backstage I made sure that everybody was on the right side of the stage and made sure props were ready to go on stage. This was stressful because you have to be quiet and make sure everybody else is quiet. When your backstage there are a million things going on in your head, like costume changes, making sure people from the audience don’t see you backstage, and making sure that you be careful with props. When we finally did do the performances, the actors and the actresses did amazing, but backstage there were always things that went wrong. The main thing that went wrong was on the last night. It was warm that day, and backstage it was extremely hot. It started when one of our actresses was throwing up in the middle of the play, 5 minutes before she was supposed to go on, it was a nightmare. Then right before her scene, she showed up, and she didn’t look good, but she went on.

STRICTLY TWEENS Then I sent people to get as much cold water bottles as they could. When she got off, I had her drink water and sit in the hall where it was cooler. By then, the play was ending, and another person was hyperventilating because of the heat too. So while people were doing the curtain call and bowing, I stayed back, and I got her water and was fanning her and walking her to the doors outside to get fresh air. On the way, there people started dropping like flies. I will admit I was scared and was getting cold towels and getting adults to come and help while going back and forth between helping people. I was making sure people were all right, and breaking down the set when a friend caught me and realized I was acting weird. He forced me to come with him to get a drink of water. I began hyperventilating and having a panic attack when I came back into the hallway. Luckily, a mom who was a nurse caught me, probably minutes before I would have fainted, and put an empty tissue box to my mouth. This helped me calmed down ( it is like when they say to breathe into a paper bag to slow down your breathing). From there my hand were shaking, as well as my legs. There were people all around me like this; we were all checking up on each other. The nurse then told me I need to go to the hospital which scared the heck out of me, but I never did end up going to the hospital. They called my dad, and my dad brought my medicine for my panic attacks. My legs gave way from the shaking and were so weak it was hard to walk, so my dad had to support me to the car. Through this experience, though, I realized how big of a family the cast and crew is, everybody wasn’t worried about themselves, they wanted to help other people before themselves. I thought that was so selfless of everybody and liked how we came together that night. Overall this was the best experience that anybody could ever ask for.

Make-Up, Hair & Nails

! Y M H O

-Nails-

-Hair-

-Make-Up-

Everyone has struggled with hair, makeup, and nails. So a little instruction and tips are very helpful every now and then.

52

With makeup, trends are constantly changing. Sharp, big, and bold. Soft, sweet, and subtle. Wear more, wear less. It’s hard to keep up. A tip for contouring, if you want a more calm look, try contouring with blush. After applying your first shade of blush, take the shade darker and apply that on your cheek. Highlighter can be confusing. One tip is to never highlight the apples of your cheek. It’ll ruin your entire look. And never, ever, ever, over highlight. With highlighter, it’s better to have too little rather than too much. Hair can be just as confusing as makeup. Oils are a go-to, to help with these problems. Castor Oil, it promotes hair growth, strengthens hair, prevents hair breakage, and it can reverse damaged hair. Coconut Oil makes your hair stronger, grow faster, it eliminates dry and frizzy hair, it restores shine and can help with dandruff. Almond Oil helps to grow out healthy hair, it strengthens hair, it restores shine, and repairs split ends. Olive Oil softens and shines hair, restores health to hair, conditions hair, softens frizzy hair. Protip; start your shower with hot water to remove dirt and oils, then end your shower with cold water to seal moisture, increase shine, and smooth hair. One of my biggest tips for nails is never to use acrylics or glue or fake nails. I’ve used fake nails, and I know an abundance of people who’ve used acrylics. They ruin your nails! Acrylics can crack and infect your nail with fungus. See. Ew. Then glue fake nails can make bumps and lines in your nail. If you’re painting your bare nails, paint your nail with a clear top coat, so the nail polish doesn’t stain. Nail designs can get complex. To start off nail art, try strips or a simple pattern like. Flowers, like daisies and such, would be a good start as well.

THE KNOW HOW

Parent’s Corner Are you an innie or an outie? An introvert or an extrovert? There’s a lot of talk going around these days about the two. Finally. Innies have gotten a bad rap for way too long, and it’s time to set the world straight. Contrary to popular press, being an introvert is freakin’ fabulous! Some people think that introverts are: Shy, Self-absorbed, Anti-social, Loners But introverts are really: Great listners, Deep thinkers, Social in small groups, The best friend one or two people could ever have Are you an introvert? You are if you… Would rather be alone or with your BFF than be with your whole class Need to chill after a crazy day Usually do a lot of listening (but can't shut up if you're talking about your passion) Think before you talk Have an active imaginative Freeze if called on unexpectedly Did you know that some of the worlds’ greats were (are) introverts: Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln, J.K. Rowling, Rosa Parks, and Gandhi? So if being an introvert is all that, why do we so often feel out of place? It’s simple. We live in an extroverts’ world. Introverts have very busy brains, so when outside stimuli come along, our circuits can get overloaded, but our extroverted world keeps screaming at us - from the radio to texts to Instagram to Facebook to Snapchat to Twitter to Flickr to group projects to TV to movies to games to…to…to…AAHHHH!!! Your brain is going to explode!

No. It just feels like it, but if you’re one of the world’s fabulous introverts, you have a LOT to offer. First though, you have to learn how to handle life in our extroverted world. Here are a few tips: Be YOU! Give FOMO a buriel. Don't let fear of misssing out rule your life. Take a walk. Alone. Unplug for an afternoon each week or an hour each day. Give your brain some space! Make a few lists: What do you believe about yourself because you're an introvert, but really it's not true? (Are you really shy?) What is true about you, but you don't believe it? What do you like about you? Keep this list close! Introverts, the world needs you and all your amazing-ness, so be brave! Be proud! Be a bold introvert!

THE KNOW HOW

Ways you can help people in need...

Most people think the only way to help people in need is to donate money but there are many other ways. When I was younger my dad was sick and in the hospital frequently with cancer. Because he was sick and couldn’t work, we had a hard time making ends meet sometimes. If it hadn’t been for family friends, family, and even complete strangers, we would have lost everything. We are thankful that today we still have the things we need, but that wouldn’t be possible without those people donating to our family. Now we are very lucky to be able to help people that need money or other objects. One way you and your family can help people in need is by donating money. If you can’t afford to give money yourself, you could also start a fundraiser, of course with permission from the person in need. If you have a special skill such as crochet, baking, or other talent you could make things to sell to raise money. Maybe you can even donate clothes or food or other objects they need if you have things that you no longer use around the house. If you’re not helping a specific person or family you could donate food to a food bank or by taking clothes that don’t fit or unneeded, unused items. Some places you can donate those in Columbia are Boonslick, Goodwill, The Salvation army, The Wardrobe, The Food Bank, The Rainbow House, The Red Cross, etcetera. Donating the person’s favorite activities also makes them not as bored- if they like crosswords, reading, or puzzles, you can give them these things to help them stay busy during tough times. Donating your time also helps- you can have a friendly conversation, serve people dinner at a homeless shelter, bake a meal, or read someone a book. All of these are good ways to help people in need, but what they all have in common is a kind heart and a willing person.
