Letter from the Editor

Confidence is something that I struggle with everyday, even at my age. For me it is so hard to be confident when I have never been good enough, pretty enough or skinny enough. The one thing that I have been working on daily, is telling myself that today I'm going to rock this day, because you choose your happiness and confidence. When we rely on others to do that we only get disappointment. Get an eraseable marker (get your parents approval) and write confidence building words on your mirror. Then not only are you buildling yourself up, but you are building your sister, brother, mom and dad up too. Here is one to start with: Posit ivity, confidence, and persis tence are keys in life, so never give up on yourself!

Fun unicorn DIY’S for DIY when you're on the go.

Shout out to @FimoKawaiiEmotions for helping me with this DIY that I now can show you! Lets get started!!!!!! First you need these things 1:50g of cornstarch 2:silicone gun(pistola silicone) 3: 30g of silicone 4:ball of wool ( teal)( lana)Lets get started!

First you mix the cornstarch and the silicone together. Next you need to cover your phone with plastic before doing this step. Then after you do that and mix the ingrediants together you mold the cornstarch and silicone mix on your phone. Then let it dry.

After it dries your need to cut off the excess off your screen. Take some more of your mixture and make ears on it (make a triangle). Then let it dry. Then get some pink paint and paint the inside of the ears and also let them dry. While it's drying you can make the pom pom by taking the yarn and put it between your middle finger and ring finger then you start to twirl it around your middle, ring, and pointer fingers and cut the excess off.

Then you take it off then tie it in half and cut each side and roll it around in your hand and then you have your pom pom. Next take two buttons then you take some string and put it through the two holes and glue it to the phone case. Get some polymer clay and get pink and white clay and mix together the clay, then twist it into a unicorn horn.

Then bake it. Next glue the pom pom on and the horn on. Then paint the cheeks on with pink paint then next, you need to take red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink paint and paint it down on the unicorns mouth to make it drool out rainbow Next use some white paint and make little stars on the rainbow drool. Then, next put it on your phone and rock it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)!

The story provides a look at the crime of sex trafficking in India. Sex trafficking is making children, preteens, and teens under the age of 18 do things very inappropriate. The rape/violation and physical abuse suffered by the girls is very disturbing and traumatic for many younger teens. In the book one girl’s suicide and the mother drinks juice from an ink tree so it causes them to misscarry babies that they do not want.

I would recommand this to teachers and parents to teach and talk to students abot sex trafficking. This is a very good book.

Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann is about Alice, a college student who gets a job at her local library over the summer while trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. Alice does know a few certain things about herself, that she is Biromatic and Asexual. Alice is a fun and realistic character that is very quirky. She has a ranking system where she color codes the cuteness levels of anything she sees, and when one of her coworkers at the library breaks her cuteness ranking Alice does not know what to do. This book had a ton of great characters although at times it did not seem to have great direction. I normally do not enjoy books centered on romances, but this one was more focused on Alice figuring out herself first.

This book really punched me in the gut. I was not expecting such a touching portrayal of a teen who is battling mental illness and those who try to love him.

While the book does have lots of questionable language, and the main characters do engage in a sexual relationship, I think that the message of the book is something worth hearing and reading. As a someone whose brother committed suicide as a teen, I find great solace in the fact that someone tackled this heavy and heartbreaking issue that not many want to touch. Finch wanted so much to “stay awake” to the possibility of July/August 2018 life, but the burden was too great.

ENTERTAINMENT

Jumanji is a comedy movie. I’m not going to spoil it for you, but it is a really, really, really, funny movie! But anyways, I will tell you a little bit of what it is about. So, basically the movie is about four kids who got a detention. Then, one of them says “hey look at that game system.” Also, I forgot to mention these teenagers are in high school. Anyway, the teenagers started to walk over to the game, and one of them asked “should we play it or leave it alone.” And of course like teenagers they play and that was a bad decision. You want me to tell you why it is a bad decision. Well, guess what, I’m not because I’m a good person and I don’t wanna spoil it.

Anyway, the teenagers try to play it, and they do, and then they get sucked into the game.

UUUUHHHHHOOOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!! And then when they got sucked in they all fall out of the sky with a tattoo on them and it was 3 lines to represent their 3 lives. The people who fall out of the sky are Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Heart, Black Jack, and Spencer.

And later in the movie they meet up with Nick Jonas. And just like any other game there is usually a bad guy and this bad guy is trying to go for a heart. But the heart is in the good guys hands, and they won’t give up until the kids leave.

Also, I forgot to tell you, but Nick Jonas has been in the game for almost 20 years. Yeah a lot. But let’s just skip to near the end. So, finally when they get out they meet back with Nick in the real life and when they do he is like only 26, and he has 2 children. And that is basically how it ends. Go watch it and thank you.

The Incredibles 2 Incredibles 2 is funny, family-friendly and action packed! The Incredibles are back and better than ever! The Incredibles movie was great and picks up where we last saw them in the parking lot. The team is ready to put evil in the trash. Elastagirl (Holly Hunter) with Mr.Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) last but definitley not least Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson). Elastagirl is chosen for a job and takes it. Bob is left with a teenager with high school problems (dramatically - don’t tell her I said that), a kid who can’t finsh math homework (maybe the dad too), and a 17-powered baby (see if you can name them all).

Let’s see what more info I can give you other than the movie is awesome. Elastagirl has a new enemy called THE SCREENSLAVER and he is a real bad one (makes me shiver just thinking about it). THE SCREENSLAVER is hard to catch. Well as we all know the superheros always win (well accept in Avengers:Infinity War). If I were to rate this I would give them five stars because this movie has great graphics, a good story plot, it's absolutley hilarious, family-friendly, and in theathers! Again these are good reasons to go see the movie. Always remember this, that you are INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay one with Nature Nature is one of God's simple creations of beauty. I love nature. Every day I would go outside on beautiful, warm, Saturday mornings and sit on the porch and listen to one of Edvard Grieg’s "Morning Moods." Nature is positivity and gentleness. If you want Nature to be kind to you, be kind first. If you want Nature to be respectful to you, be respectful first. If you want Nature to stay strong, don't weaken it. ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Meet the athlete of the month Payten. Payten is a cheerleader at Eagle Elite in Columbia. She is 12 years old and in the 7th grade. She does competitive cheer which means she goes to competitions all over Missouri. Payten’s competitive cheer season starts out with tryouts in May to see if you make the team! Once you make the team, the season ends the following April. So that means she only has one month off a season. Payten goes to practice two times a week for several hours. After competitions Payten loves to go back to the hotel and go swimming with her teamates. Payten started playing sports when she was really young because she thought it would be fun! She plays other sports as well like volleyball and tennis. When she isn’t busy with sports her hobbies are drawing and hanging out with her friends! Payten has a very fun attitude and a positive personality. When you meet her you can tell right away that she does cheer because she is so peppy and upbeat!

It all started in June 2005. That’s when my mom found out she was pregnant with me. She was very excited but very worried. In December 2005, I almost came early! But I was born on January 24, 2006. I only weighed 4 lbs 14 oz., and was 19 inches long. I only had to stay in the hospital three days because I was full term and eating well. If I had been born a few weeks earlier, I would have been considered a preemie. We stayed at my grandmas, and then we moved to an apartment.

When I was 3, I went down a slide and hit my head and I passed out for a bit.

That was my first hospital visit. One year later we moved to Centralia. That year was my first year of daycare. That’s also where the daycare wasn’t paying attention, and I was found near the railroad by a bystander! My mom was really mad and terrified. Obviously, she put me in a different daycare after that.

Fast forward several years to 3rd grade. That’s when I had my first bike accident and it left a deep gash. I also played baseball for one year. Then, in 4th grade, I fractured my elbow. I started becoming adventurous, exploring around, but also still shy. I am a gamer, and I play a lot of different games. Sometimes I play the games online with friends, or they will come over, and we will hang out and play video games.

In 5th grade, I became very interested in math. Also, that year I went into an after school program called SMART, Students and Mentors Achieving Responsibility Together. We work on homework, do fun activities, and have clubs. Some of my favorite clubs are Cooking, Exercise, Cake Decorating, and STEM. SMART helps me improve my grades because I can get help when I am stuck on something. I’m also very happy that SMART is able to have field trips. I like to help our community by volunteering for different events. I am able to do that a lot in SMART.

FEAT URED I was also in SMART in sixth grade and started writing for BoldlyU. We meet at least once a month to work on articles, and once a month with Darla Harmon. I have been in two BoldlyU photo shoots. I liked it, but it was kind of awkward! I am very proud of this article.

Finally, in the summer of 2017, me and my family went to Alabama at the Gulf of Mexico. It was a great vacation because it was my first one and I got to go on a dolphin tour. I saw a lot of dolphins swimming and jumping in the ocean.

My family might go on vacation this summer. I wish we could go to Hawaii, but it is really far away and expensive. Next year I will be in seventh grade and hopefully continue to be in SMART and write for BoldlyU. I don’t know much about being a seventh grader, but I am looking forward to it!

If you could be anybody who would you be? If you could do anything what would you do? I asked these questions because if you have confidence and a desire then you can be/do anything you dream.

My mom told me about a study that was done on three groups of people that needed knee surgery. Two of the groups had surgery on their knees while the third group was made to believe they had surgery, but they really didn’t. All groups of people in the study could now walk, play basketball, and move better than they had before the study. The third group was told two years after the study that they had a fake surgery. One of the members, when he learned about the fake surgery, said "anything” in this world is possible when you put your mind to it. *“Your mind can work miracles.” *Biology of Belief: B. Lipton

FEAT URED What advice would you give to kids t hat want to be on t he radio one day?

1. Be yourself!

2. It’s not necessarily about experience. Don’t shy away from applying at a radio station just because you haven’t done it before. We hire and have hired more people based on attitude and mind set over skill. You could have someone with a ton of experience but if they aren’t willing to be part of a team and play along with the other on-air station people, they aren’t going to be a fit for here or a lot of other radio stations. It really is a double edge sword. If you have two people in the room and one person has a lot of experience but they are stubborn and mean, ignorant or not willing to play by our rules or fit into our culture, verses someone that is brand new but is ambitious and willing to learn, we will train you up all day, every day. We want someone with a great fun personality and willingness to want to learn, other than the person with all the experience.

How did you get s tar ted in t he Radio business?

That is a fun question! Not only did I want to be a Firefighter as a kid, I would say I had a split personality. When I was in school I was shy and quiet but had a good group of friends. I played sports, soccer and baseball, but I wasn’t in the "in" crowd or the popular group. But, in the neighborhood I was one of the older kids, so I was more outgoing and adventurous. We used to make our own radio shows with our big boom boxes and our tape decks, and record and make up shows, commercials, and characters. We had a lot of fun! One of our friends could play the keyboard and piano so he would make up theme songs for our shows. Those tapes still exist. A couple of my friends have them and keep saying to put them on facebook.

Also, my dad had a radio so he would be listening to either the Cardinals or the Blues game and I thought about doing play by play. When I got into college I originally was going to learn Graphic Design and more of the art side of advertising. It always interested me. I had a couple of projects in High School that I thought was cool changing their logos. I also thought about being an architect but then realized you had to know how to do math, and that wasn’t happening. On a whim, a friend of mine was friends with an instructor at St Louis Broadcast Center, which is a one-onone radio and television school. I wasn’t big into one huge group classes, so the oneon-one was appealing to me. I haven’t looked back since. Plus, I have been able to do some play by play for Columbia College away from the radio station. It was kind of by accident that I started radio and when I went back for my High School Reunion I was voted most changed, but my friends said that I was the same guy.

Meet Cosmo What was it like t he firs t t ime you heard yourself?

The first time was strange because I wasn’t expecting it. It was a commercial. It still gets me sometimes when I'm not expecting it.

Bes t par t of t he job?

Honestly, the people. Being in a fun cool magazine like BoldlyU, not many people can say they have been in a magazine. Not many people can say they helped raise 200 million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network through the Radio-AThon. Meeting the families, kids, doctors and nurses and hearing some of the stories, along with the friends I have made through that has been life changing.

It has also made me a better dad and boyfriend. I have also done all kinds of stupid, silly stuff to make people laugh. I've walked on mice traps and legos barefoot. I have dressed up like Taylor Swift. I have been shot with paint ball guns and I have jumped out of airplanes.

What is t he wors t par t?

The hours. Although I do get the afternoons free for the most part, there is a lot of hours and events. I have missed my kids' events and family events because of the hours. Also, that alarm clock going off at 3:30 or 4 every morning and having to move to next radio gig.

Who do you look up to?

My Dad. Especially for him trying so long to help me with algebra and math. He was an engineer and the math knowledge skipped me and went to my sister.

That man is a saint for trying so hard. We even went to a tutor...he did everything to help me. But he always said, “Just do your best.”

What advice would you give your Middle School self?

Save more money, be better with money. Learn to save and do that better. Be true to yourself and don’t sweat the small stuff. I was so enamored with what everyone thought and had no confidence in myself. Everything was what I thought this group of friends or teammates thought. Be true to yourself and not what everyone thinks you should do or be.

Entering High School at 12 years old...

High school is a scary thing for a lot of 8th graders. We are no longer babies; we are teens. But, for me and my brother we are still tweens. I am a twin, my brother and I were promoted in 5th grade to 6th grade. We never had a chance to experience 5th grade. We are smart for our age, but we both are scared to begin this new journey in high school. In 8th grade we were the youngest and smallest in our grade. However, we managed to be fine, confident and began to be accepted by our classmates and pass to what is now going to be our Freshman year in high school. We will still be 12 at the beginning of the year. So, now we are back where we started 8th grade year. Zero confidence and scared about how we will fit in. Now I am optimistic and excited, but I am also nervous. My brother says he has confidence. I ask myself will we fit in, will we be able to keep up, and are we going to be treated different? Although I had all these questions at the beginning of 8th grade, I remember feeling so insecure, yet we were successful and it wasn’t at all what I expected. Being a tween in our freshman year is going to be challenging but I decided to approach it like my twin brother with positive vibes and confidence. We will get involved, won’t be afraid to ask questions and stay focused. We will be young, but we will be confident freshmen because we earned our right to be High Schoolers. I am looking forward to my high school years and showcasing my artistic skills. SO if you are not feeling confident about going into the new school year just remember you made it through already, it’s just a different year.

Believe in yourself.

The Sport Legend Experience If you are looking for something to do this summer you should check out this new exhibit called The Sport Legend Experience at the Children’s Museum. Let me start by saying I had the opportunity to interview with Leslie Olsen Manager of Public relations before going to the exhibit to get a hands on experience.

The interview was done in the sports art room which really wowed me because I love drawing. As we got through taking a tour of the exhibit I sat down with Mrs. Olsen to ask my first question. How do you come up with new ideas for the children museum exhibits? The exhibits are currently planned out until 2020 and that was cool knowing they already know what they are going to be doing in 2020. The ideas come from everything around us. Such as what’s popular at the time or what kids and families are really in to. They watch for new trends and activities that get kids going and excited. So then that brought me to my next question, what was the motivation for The Sport Legend Experience? It is an exhibit that targets every member of the family to get them to participate and get active. It was created to get the family to engage with one another and get active. I like that concept, my mom can play too. As our interview came to an end I asked what she would recommend for kids my age to try. Mrs. Olsen said to try them all; it’s a different experience for everyone. The next thing to do was to go visit the exhibit myself. I was so amazed by all the sports I could try. I stopped at the basketball exhibit. It was cool. It had regular hoops and hoops for little kids. I always wanted to try golf, and they had a small​course for little kids and one for older kids and parents. This N ​ ew Sports Legend Experience exhibit allows everyone to try new sports and have fun with family at the same time. It’s not competitive so you can just enjoy learning and playing. Be sure to bring a water bottle this summer because they have water stations and it will be hot. I think this is a good place for family and friends to visit this summer!

Hi! I’m Molly! Are you a middle child? Do you ever feel like you’re invisible? Well, I’m both. I feel like I am not noticed, and whenever I am it’s because I am getting the blame or getting in trouble. My big sister is named Gwendolyn (but we call her Gwen.) My little sister is Matilda (but we call her Tilly.) Throughout my life I have tried different activities that I thought people would notice me for, but I never found anything. I even found taekwondo. It is fun so I’m still doing it, but I still don’t get noticed. Only a few “I’m so proud of you”, “You’re good at that”, or “Great jobs” here and there. I’ve been doing it so long that if I keep practicing, by the end of summer I could earn my black belt! Still no one notices. So I’m trying to learn to deal with it. I have a lot of good friends, but even they forget me, or are mean to me, or talk behind my back. I especially get made fun of because of things I believe in, such as unicorns, mermaids, fairies, dragons, and much more! And the thing that makes it all worse is I am allergic to gluten and dairy! And there’s the pressure! All the pressure! It’s just too much for me! My whole life is filled with pressure and chaos, and it’s hard! Sometimes I even want to cry or go home, or even become invisible to see if anyone cared. But then I remember that my dad once said pressure can be good for you sometimes.

At first I didn’t believe him, but as I thought about it, I realized he is right! Pressure can be good sometimes. Even though I’m not noticed I still love my family and friends. SO instead of crying, wanting to go home, or wishing to become invisible, I think about the great things in life like my family and friends, school, and taekwondo! You should try it. What’s important in your life? Don’t go crazy! Instead, forgive, give peace, be humble, and most of all, choose kind!

In third grade there was a boy in my class that did so many mean things that I slowly lost my confidence. He purposely walked into me just to snap "watch it," at me. Another time he said girls can't like pokemon. He said he only cared about himself and his friends. He was selfish and greedy and I was trying to make him a better person -Past You but it would be impossible.

Becoming a Freshman!

When becoming a freshman you have to know all the things that the high school expects you to do and follow the rules. Also, when someone in a higher grade asks you to do something that you know is wrong, do the right thing. You want to be a leader not a follower. One day being a leader will get you all A’s in school, scholarships to college, and even get you a job you love and still get paid good money.

Sometimes when I enter a new school, I get a little worried about if people will like me or not, and what I should do to fit in. My advice is to be yourself and to never do something that you will regret just to fit into a group that you may never see again after high school. If you want my advice view these 5 tips below.

Sometimes people wonder if the stories are true in high school about being thrown into lockers, getting super wedgies, being pushed around and bullied, and even getting a swirly in the bathroom toilets.

Well, I wouldn’t be able to tell you because I haven’t been there yet, but I can tell you one thing is to be yourself and stand up to people that are against you. And to those of you who like to fight, sometimes you just have to walk away from the problem, no matter how mad you are. Because there are always consequences and those consequences are not worth the bad grades.

Middle School Advice

Let me be honest with you Middle School might seem like the hardest part of your life right now. Trust me though Middle School is something that should be taking serious because it can lead you into an easier life in High School, with your classes and good grades, like taking the harder classes. Also in middle school stay focused on your school because honestly relationships will always be there. But, also have fun with friends because they are your friends and you should enjoy your Middle School years because before you know it they will be gone so fast. Going into High School you should have confidence in yourself because confidence can take you far in life no matter the level of education you’re in. Even as an adult having confidence can be an amazing thing because at the end of the day the only opinion that matters is yours. That’s why confidence and loving yourself can lead to amazing things. You’ll shine wherever you go because people will be able to see that there is something special about you and that you are worthy of anything that comes your way.

OVERCOMIN G ST RUGLES WITH CONFIDE NCE Confidence is a crazy thing. For some people confidence can take years to develop, and they have to train themselves to be confident. Others, however, are just born with it. No matter which side of the spectrum you are on, confidence is a fundamental character trait that cannot be stressed enough in any life situation, from asking out a crush, interviewing for a job as an adult, or anything in between. To help make sure that you can gain and maintain confidence, here are a few tips on helping to build your confidence.

1. Posit ive Self-Percept ion The first thing you can do to help gain confidence is make sure that you have a positive view of yourself. All too often when people are stressed out, they stop believing in themselves and talk themselves down. This creates an image of yourself that is negative and that you don’t like. To be confident, you have to view yourself as a strong, confident person. Dressing nice and grooming yourself can help.

2. Opt imism When building confidence, you should try to think the best in situations. “The person who thinks they can and the person who thinks they can’t are both right.”

To be confident, you have to feel like you can achieve your goals, and to do that you have to try. Being optimistic not only helps you feel better about yourself, but creates a positive climate all around you. Try to look at the best possible outcome in anything in life, and you will be more confident.

3. Set achievable goals Everybody wants to shoot for the moon and do things that other people could only dream of. Unfortunately that often leads to dreams crashing down. It’s important to start off by setting goals that you know you can achieve, no matter how small that may be. Accomplishing those small goals will make you feel good, and the size of your goals will increase with your confidence.

Hopefully these tips are as helpful for you as they were for me.

Confidence can be hard, especially if you are an introvert. I definitely have a hard time talking to people without being awkward. When I moved, and had to make friends all over again, my parents gave me some advice that really helped me. Here are a few of their tips.

Look the person in the eyes when you are talking to them. This shows them that you care about what they are talking about (even if you don’t!)

Get people to talk about themselves. People love to talk about themselves, soit will be easy to listen after that.

Don’t interrupt. Ever.

If you are having a conversation, and don’t think that they are listening, look at their feet. If their feet are pointing at you, they are listening. If their feet are pointing away, then they are trying to get out of the conversation.

Know when to stop talking, and listen more than talk.

Avoid awkward pauses at all costs.

Be mindful of your audience. Don’t say anything that could hurt or offend them.

If you seriously can’t think of anything else to talk about, compliment them.

Think of things to say beforehand, so you are prepared.

Ask them how their day is going. This may show you that you and the person you are talking to share things in common.

If you have to get out of a conversation, let them have the last word.

It’s alright to tell the person you are talking to if they hurt your feelings or made you feel bad.

BE YOURSELF! This is the most important. There is no point in trying to get to know them if they don’t get to know the real you.

Do not ever forget, that YOU are the expert at YOU. No one can give you confidence, confidence must come from within. Confidence is critical in living life as a tween/teen.

There are many distractors that can hurt your confidence, such as comparing yourself to others, or looking to friends for their approval of you. When you have confidence, you have the ability to overcome hurdles that are in front of you, and you are not afraid to go after what YOU want.

Confidence is believing you have the ability to be successful with a particular task or the ability to be successful in a given situation. Confidence is connected to your self-esteem. Take a moment to answer these questions. When was a time you were not confident? What did it feel like? Would you say that you are a confidant person? Why or why not? Answering questions like these, give you a better idea as to where you are regarding your level of confidence.

It is important to have tools on hand to help you boost or maintain your confidence. Here are eight (8) awesome ways to give your confidence a boost: Use positive affirmations daily. Affirmations are positive statements you speak to yourself that give you encouragement and a confidence boost. They are short, positive, and specific. (ex. I trust, believe in, and have confidence in myself).

Look people in the eyes when you are saying hello or greeting them. This says that you are confident and your self-esteem is intact. This is something you can practice at home or school.

Participate in activities YOU enjoy. You may enjoy reading, riding your bike, dancing, or playing video games. Whatever the activity is, do it, because it is what makes YOU happy.

Set a goal and accomplish the goal. Nothing feels better than setting a goal and then accomplishing the goal. Accomplishing goals can definitely provide a boost to your confidence. Set a small and attainable goal today. Congratulations when you reach that goal!

Practice gratitude. Gratitude will give you an automatic confidence boost because you are doing good for another person. Write a thank you note to your parent or teacher, volunteer in your local community, or give a friend or sibling a nice compliment.

Keep your circle of friends positive. Birds of a feather flock together, so make sure you are hanging with friends who are positive, have a positive outlook on life, and have confidence as well.

Put on your favorite outfit and rock it. You feel good when you look good.

Wearing that outfit you feel confident in, will give you a walk of confidence and put a smile on your face.

Recognize your good qualities. Take a moment to write down three of your good qualities. (ex. honest, friendly, open-minded). Recognizing your good qualities empowers you to be confident and share your good with others. You also are not focusing on the negative, but the positive.

There you have it, eight confidence boosting tips that will give you a great start in your confidence walk. Do not be afraid to share these awesome confidence boosters with your friends. Sharing is caring, and what better way to give yourself and your friend a boost, than sharing positive information. Remember: Be Bold, Be Confident, Be You!

In today’s society, dress-code is a huge problem, especially in middle schools and most high-schools. The females in this case get treated very differently than males do when it comes to the dress-code. Girls are disciplined disproportionately because the clothes we wear are “distracting.”

I have never once seen a boy called out for their attire, even though they also break the rules. One thing that has never made sense to me, is the fact that if a girl asked to leave the classroom for any reason, they are told no because it “disrupts the class.” But then the second that a girl shows up to school wearing a tank-top or shorts they are immediately told to leave the classroom because what we are wearing is too distracting to be worn at school. Now I understand that there has to be rules to what you can wear and what you can not wear but it is not okay for schools to be sending kids home because their shorts don’t go down to their knees. I have been sent home from school many times because the holes in my jeans are above my finger tips, or my shorts are too short or the fact that my shoulders are showing. They think that boys can’t control themselves. But I know for a fact that that is not true but I also know that my mom would never let me out of the house if she thought what I was wearing was inappropriate.

Now I support LGBTQ+ completely, but the fact that kids who are transgender are being sent home for wearing clothing that is different than what’s expected for the legal sex, while others have been excluded from yearbooks completely. Male students, using traditional female accessories, such as earings, necklaces, bracelets etc and vise versa have been disciplined for their fashion choices.

Many have protested against dress-codes and have been disciplined for that also. I think that students should be allowed to protest against these types of things because it’s not fair to the girls that guys can wear what they please.

Mizzou Women’s Basket ball On June 21st at the Centralia Kiwanis Club meeting, at Centralia Golf and Social Club, Missouri Tigers women’s basketball coach Robin Pingeton, spoke to at least 40 people. She discussed her career and what she hopes she can help her players accomplish. She says it's more than just winning and losing. Pingeton was introduced by Centralia High School Principal and Centralia Kiwanis President Matt Smith, he told of Pingeton's career at St. Ambrose University in Iowa, where she earned All-American recognition in basketball and softball. During her career at Iowa she scored 2,502 basketball points which is still a record there. When she came to Mizzou to coach she said one of the first things she needed to do as a coach was to get buy-in from her players on three basic goals to rebuild the Lady Tigers attendance at their games. The three goals were...

Win on the court Play a style that is really fun to watch Invest back in serving the community She said her goals have worked and they have gone “from five to six-hundred fans at the games when she started to over 11,000 at the games." She said her player’s involvement in the community was one of the reasons for the increase in interest in the games. Pingeton shared her ideas that the team worked on when she first came to Mizzou. They came up with five main ideas for the program: Love no matter what on the court, in the locker room and in the community.

Ways for Teens to Build Confidence

Teenage years can be very challenging as we develop into adults. Not only are their many changes in our own lives, the environment around us is continually changing. The demands of life can affect how we view ourselves. How we are supposed to look. How we are supposed to act. What clothes we should wear.

And WHO we should be as a person. This can really have a profound effect on our self-confidence.

As difficult as life can be, there are several things we can do to build confidence in ourselves.

Exercise!

Exercise releases endorphins which are hormones that make us feel good! Exercise also builds strength, cardiovascular health, and flexibility. The physical benefits of exercise also have psychological benefits that help build self-confidence.

Always seek oppor t unit ies for self-improvement.

Rather than dwelling on perceived self-weaknesses, put that mental energy into searching for ways to improve upon a particular skill. Seek out people are good at what you want to be good at and pick their brain for ways to improve. Even the greatest of all time were once beginners.

Balance self-improvement wit h self-awareness.

It is important to remember that NOBODY IS PERFECT. And despite what the world may tell you, nobody expects you to be perfect. It’s okay to not be good at something. Always look for opportunities to improve on weaknesses but more importantly, put energy into maximizing your strengths! Always bet on yourself!

Parent’s Corner Raising Confident kids!

Raising confident kids can be challenging at times, but the one key thing that I have found is how important it is to start listening to them as young children. It may be as simple as sitting at the dinner table with no electronics and completely being intune to what they are saying. I know sometimes it can be hard but the sooner that they learn that you care about what is going on in their lives the more open and honest they will be with you. If they don't feel like talking at that time have them share their thoughts in a letter or journal and when they are ready they will talk to you. Don't be quick to judge them or scold them if you don't think they handled a situation the way you think it should have been handled. Praise them for their efforts and gently guide them on how a better way might have been to handle it. Also, let them have a voice in some of the family desisions that are being made. The power of belonging is one of the keys to confidence. Really isn't it what we all want in this world...to belong to something and/or be important to somebody.
