Letter from the Editor

I remember entering 9th grade, feeling not so good about myself. Standing 5'1 tall and weighing 76 pounds, I was one of the smallest in the school. It didn't help that I wore a size 11 shoe either. My seal-esteem was extremely low because I focused more on what I felt were my weaknesses. I was the little kid in class with the big feet. Although I played basketball, football, and baseball in my neighborhoods, I felt my size would not allow me to be successful in high school. I had such a fear of failure that I never went to tryouts. As an adult, those experiences are still fresh in my mind; however, I now feel confident in my abilities. I'm also better at receiving feedback from others and have surrounded myself with positive friends who have helped my self-esteem run high most days.

"Are all my days great, you ask?" Nope! As I have grown and learned through life experiences, sometimes you have to deal with the rain before the sun comes out. It's called self-esteem balance!

On T he Come Up

One of my favorite books that I have read is On The Come Up. I found this book in my local library and have seen it on the shelves of many stores. This intriguing book was written by Angie Thomas. Angie Thomas has written some excellent books, including a very popular book that has gained a lot of attention, titled, The Hate U Give. On The Come Up is very similar to The Hate U Give, therefore, if you enjoyed it, I recommend this page-turner. In this book, there is a teenage African-American girl named Bri, who has dreams of becoming a rapper, just like her father, whose music became very popular after he passed away. Bri’s dad died when she was young, so she didn’t know how to emotionally handle it. Now that she is older, she knows she wants to fill his shoes. Bri is growing up in a high crime neighborhood called Garden Heights.

Even though she lives in the projects, her mother tries very hard for her and her siblings to make it out. They are sent to the best school in the area. Bri has a lot of problems trying to “come up” in her area. There are days where she doesn’t eat and days where she runs into some negative people. It is very hard to become a rapper when you are a girl. The people in her area didn’t take girls seriously, but Bri didn't let that get in the way of her dreams. In the story, Bri does everything she can to reach her dreams. I recommend this book to young teens all the way to adults. On The Come Up is an engaging book of great characters whom you can identify with that seem real. There is excitement, times of happiness and sadness, and humor. I hope you will read this book. I can guarantee it will not be a waste of your time!

How to make a baseball Baseball is my favorite sport! You get to run, slide, get dirty.

It's the best game that a boy can have. Now, I’m going to tell you how to make a baseball. The first step to making a baseball, involves molding two shells of black rubber to a rubberized cork. The second step is adding a thin layer of red rubber and is molded to the ball and a layer of cement is applied, wool yarn is wound around the ball. The third step is then winding string up until it covers it again. The fourth step is that they put the cover on. The last step is to sew it up with 108 stitches. That’s a lot if you ask me. That’s all the steps to do it.

Easy Soft & Chewy Sugar Cookies Now my favorite thing of all has to be my heart-shaped sugar cookies.

I really enjoy baking and spreading love, so I put the two together and created a sweet treat that everyone can enjoy.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup (2 sticks, 16 tablespoons) butter, softened to cool room temperature 1 1/3 cups (10 ounces) granulated sugar 1 large egg 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups (12 1/2 ounces) all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Additional granulated sugar or sprinkles, for rolling

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (see note). Line two large, rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly grease with cookingspray.

In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a handheld electric mixer, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the egg and vanilla and mix again for 1-2 minutes until the batter lightens in color. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, bakingpowder, baking soda, and salt.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.

Scoop the cookie dough into rounded balls (about 2 tablespoons in size; I use my #40 cookie scoop), roll in granulated sugar or sprinkles and place on the prepared baking sheets a couple of inches apart (about 12 cookies per baking sheet).

Bake for 11-13 minutes until slightly crackly on top (but not much color around the edges or bottom to keep them soft and chewy).

Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before removing to a cooling rack to cool completely.

February 14th is just another date on the calendar that means nothing at all. Wrong it’s Valentine's Day silly. Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate romantic love, friendship, and admiration. There are many things that people do for Valentine’s Day. For example, they buy heart-shaped candies, dozens and dozens of roses, gigantic teddy bears, expensive jewelry and so much more. Me on the other hand not so much, I mean don’t get me wrong I do enjoy a nice card and some chocolates but that’s just about it. ’m all about homemade crafts and things, I believe that if something is made from scratch it means more than just some store-bought item. If you are a crafty person like myself here are a few ideas to make for the Valentine in your life.

Nothing says “I love you” more than a pop-up heart and words of your choice.

MEET THE AUTHOR OF ORANGE, A NEW BOOK BY DERRICK SLACK Hi I’m Faith, upper-class student at Crispus Attucks and I got the chance to talk to author Derrick Slack about his new children’s book titled Orange.

Faith: Mr. Slack, tell us a little about Orange.

Author Derrick Slack: I made up a story called Orange for my little sister, who was feeling bad one day. Orange was the loneliest word because nothing rhymed with Orange. The story was catchy, and she loved it, my little brother and cousin who was the same age loved it. After that, I started telling the story everywhere I went when I saw kids. It's interactive, and I was encouraged to put the story in a book twenty years ago, but I didn't.

Faith: What made you finally put the story in book?

Author Derrick Slack: My wife woke up in the middle of the night, jarred me awake, and said she had a dream about Orange and knows exactly what the character looks like. She encouraged me to write the book immediately. I had never written Orange; it was just an oral story.

Faith: How long did it take you to write the story?

Author Derrick Slack: It took me six hours.

Faith: What is the story in the book about?

Author Derrick Slack: Orange is a book about Diversity, Inclusion, the Power of Words, Identify, and positive self-esteem.

Faith: Why did you focus on this subject matter in the book?

Author Derrick Slack: I’m an educator and I’ve lost students to suicide which is now the second leading cause of death of youth ages 10-24 years old.

Faith: What are some of your goals with this book?

Author Derrick Slack: My goals are to reach youth that may be struggling with depression or low self-esteem and encourage them to seek help. Not only will the book encourage them to seek help, but it will display the options of help that they can utilize personally.

Faith: What advice would you give a young person struggling with self-esteem?

Author Derrick Slack: I would encourage a young person to seek help from a trusted adult, parent, or school official. I want them to know that they are not alone and that their life has meaning. How you think determines who you are.

I would also encourage them to worked to find more ways to be engaged in conversations about positive self-image.

Faith: Tell us about you. Where did you go to middle school and high school?

Author Derrick Slack: I attended middle school at Crispus Attucks when it was just a middle school. I was number 45 on the football team which during my time, we never won a game. I attended high school at Arsenal Tech. I’ve published 9 books and have traveled to 30 different countries.

Faith: Anything else you want to share with us?

Author Derrick Slack: Read the book and understand the concepts behind the story which are simply kindness, don’t be a bully and know your worth.

First education should be about yourself. Get help when times are difficult.

d of r a o B Ju ni or My sweet Elizabeth Joy, “Lizzy”. What do you say about such a sweet little girl whose life was cut way too short? I will do my best to make this brief. I know some amazing kids are reading this magazine right now and I am trying to think, what would Lizzy want you to know? I think after being her mom for 10 sweet years I think I have an idea. Lizzy was a brave girl. She didn’t think she was perfect or had it all together, she just knew she didn’t want to be left out. She was the youngest in her family, she adored her big sister and brother. She wanted to do what they could do. She loved to sing and dance, though at times it scared her to do so in front of people. She did many things afraid and you know what, it encouraged a lot of other people around her. Lizzy really thought about the feelings of others. She didn’t like to see others hurting, especially kids. When she was diagnosed with cancer and had to leave her family and go all the way to Memphis to St. Jude, a hospital for kids with cancer, the hardest part about that for her was seeing all of the other kids in pain and hurting.

Lizzy went through a lot of pain herself, she spent the last 15 months of her life in a wheelchair or on braces. Lizzy lived her best life that last year of her life giving, encouraging, uplifting all of those around her. Lizzy needed a cure from her bone cancer and the last thing she wanted to give was her tumors to St. Jude, in hopes they could find a cure that would help another little kid that ended up like her. Lizzy had some amazing friends and chose her friends wisely. Lizzy was a good friend and they knew that. Her friends were very sad and hated seeing Lizzy in pain and not get to live. Her friends wanted to make a difference and push through their pain. They are now on our Junior Board of Lizzy’s Foundation that we created to honor Lizzy, help families going through pediatric cancer and help raise money to help St. Jude find a cure for Osteosarcoma. Lizzy would want you to know, you can do the hard things, you can help others, your life matters and live everyday like it is a gift! Be brave like Lizzy.

My name is Gracie. I am on Lizzy others with cancer. Ava, 12 Wampler’s Junior Board. I am so happy to be on the board. I am so excited to help with cancer awareness. Watching what Lizzy Being a part of the junior board went through has really encouraged me to means a lot to me. Lizzy's Walk of help others with cancer. She was a great Faith Foundation helps families facing friend that I will never forget. I am so excited childhood cancer as well as live on to be a part of Lizzy’s Foundation and watch Lizzy's legacy. I know how hard it it grow. I am really hoping to go to Cure Fest was for me to watch my friend go next September in Washington D. C. I think through that and I can’t imagine what that it would be a great learning opportunity it’s like to watch your child or sibling for me. I think that it would also help me to hurt so bad. I know how grateful understand what cancer awareness is really the Wampler’s were for the help and all about. It is sometimes hard to understand support other people gave them and I’d love to help other families feel that what people are going through if you aren’t going through it yourself. I’m so thankful to way.

My name is Violet and I have been best friends with Lizzy since the start of Kindergarten. With our birthdays just a week a part, we often enjoyed celebrating together with our friends. When Lizzy was diagnosed with cancer, we didn't really know what it meant. We saw our friend sick and in pain and we wanted to help. We came up with the idea to hold a bake sale at our school to raise money for the Wamplers. My mom works for a local non-profit organization called Veterans United Foundation that was able to surprise us and match these funds! Now the Wamplers are giving back in the biggest way possible and I am grateful to be a part of it and honor my friend, Lizzy.They have a charity organization called Lizzy's Walk of Faith Foundation that holds an annual 5k to donate toys and money, etc. to kids at St. Jude and other local families battling cancer.

I am excited to be a part of the Junior Board, bringing smiles and joy to these kids who are going through a lot of pain. I want them to know that someone is thinking of them and praying for them by making cards, looking for small gifts, and by helping out with fundraisers. I am excited to help raise awareness and bring new research to find a cure for cancer and stop the pain and hurt, felt by these kids.

Hi, I’m Colton. I’m 13 and an 8th grader at Hallsville Middle School. I like to play sports- football, baseball, basketball and run track If I have to pick a favorite I’d say it is baseball.

In my spare time I like to hang with friends at our houses or playing online video games like Madden.

My parents and family helped develop my self esteem. My Mimi has always said “can’t” isn’t a word or at least not in her dictionary - so I had to try. And I did!

To be good in sports, you have to have confidence in your abilities For me-Confidence is something that is earned by hard work I’ve put in a lot of hours in practices and practicing on my own to improve my abilities I try to help my teammates and friends with their confidence by telling them when they do a good job or show them a better way to do something. My confidence spills over into everything I do - it may have started to sports as that comes easy to me but I’ve used this confidence in my school work and life in general I believe I can do anything I want - if I try!

My name is Adam. I am 14 years old and in the 8th grade at Hallsville Middle School. I like to play basketball, baseball and football. I also like to swim, play guitar, hang out with my friends and spend time with my family.

To me, self esteem means having confidence and believing in yourself. Self esteem can help you grow to be a better athlete, student and friend. I think it is also important to help build up other people’s self esteem by being a friend to everyone and showing kindness.

What does self-esteem mean to me? Self-esteem is having confidence in yourself and believing in your abilities. I feel like my self-esteem is pretty high and I try to keep it high by surrounding myself with positive people. I try to help others to keep a good self-esteem by complimenting them and being kind. The Voice is a wonderful program, I recommend this program to all teenagers. We were able to create our own magazine, and we were also able to take a photoshoot. The Voice provides so much information regarding helping you with accomplishing your goals for the future. In my experience in VOICE I learned how to achieve my goals. I enjoyed the games we played, they taught us how to do the right things and reach our goals. What I liked most about the VOICE program is the people that helped motivate me to reach my goals in ways I did not think were possible. The VOICE program gave me confidence that I can do what I want to do as long as I put my mind to it, also it helped me to think about when I get older as well and I can be anything I want to become in life. I l enjoyed the snacks that were offered while in the program, they made me feel welcomed as we came through the door while preparing us to get ready to learn about what we want to do with our life and our goals. All the things they taught me encouraged me to be a football player or be an astronaut or to be the first person in the world in history to visit or maybe live at Uranus. The Voice made me feel that anything is possible and the sky's the limit.

VOICE was an amazing program that taught me how to set and reach goals and how to spark inspiration. This program means a lot to me because of the things that it has taught me and what it has given me for my future. I would recommend VOICE to every kid that knows what they’re going to do, every kid that doesn’t, and every kid who has a flicker of an idea. That’s because VOICE can spark the goal, the dream, or the process. When I first participated in VOICE, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a lawyer and social studies teacher, and I knew the colleges I was going to go to, and I knew that I was going to open my own law office. After I participated, I knew more of the details of the process that I’m going to take to reach my goals. I liked the things that this program gave me for my future, and how the advisors supported me and told me that I could reach my goals.

T hank you Dream Factory!

My name is Gracie Belle and I am 9 years old. I have been riding horses since before I can remember. Horses are my favorite animal and I love riding and spending time with them. When I was 3yrs old I told my mom that my one day I wanted to go to the PINTO WORLDS horse show.

In June of 2015 at 5yrs old. I was diagnosed with Von Willebrands disease which is a bleeding disorder that effects 1-2% of the population. Having VWD meant that my life might not be the same as other kids my age as I am prone to bleeds both internal and external. As times has gone on I have learned a lot about VWD with my family. Throughout our journey we learned about the Dream Factory (a volunteer organization that grants wishes to children with chronic illness). In May of 2019 I asked my mom if I could fill out my application for my Dream Factory Dream. We sat down and filled out the application where I had to list three dreams. After filling out my application I met my “dream maker” Amy. We talked about why this was my dream and how I would feel if my dream came true. In October of 2019 MY DREAM CAME T RUE! Thanks to the Dream Factory I now have my very own American Paint Horse and we are on the path to THE PINTO WORLDS horse show.

Since my diagnosis my horses have given me a feeling of being “normal” like all the other kids.When I’m riding I don’t worry about my VWD and on days that I may need my medicine or I have to go to the doctor I know I can come home and my horses are there. I am so excited for this years show season and can’t wait to see what is in store for my horse and myself.

We have a lot to learn and work on but I know that we can do it. Working with the horses makes me proud and gives me so much confidence because we have to work together as a team.

I don't think I'm going to make it! I'm not good enough for anybody, my mom says I need to exercise more because I'm not as skinny as my sister. I already play three sports and go to body conditioning three days a week on top of the sports. My grades are bad because I'm so tired all the time and I just want to sleep instead of listen to the most boring teachers ever. Plus, I'm not as smart as my brother was and the compare me all the time to him. The counselor calls me into his office and says I need better self esteem. Where am I going to find that with everyone bringing me down. Would anyone really miss me?

Self-esteem is really important. I have doubted myself multiple times before and after that I ran away. I had siblings and parents bringing me down. School didn’t help either. I had “friends” bringing me down. Making fun of me and that just hurt. I couldn't even talk to my parents because they had brought me down. I didn’t want to talk to the counselor either. I was scared until I told one of my friends and they helped me little by little. They have been helping me every day just by talking to me and making me laugh. YOU should never make anybody make you small and if they try just don’t listen and make yourself big.

My name is Nigel, and I am a seventh-grader in Pike Township. I am a student-athlete who excels in school and plays several sports. The combination of family life, academics, and sports have all been contributing factors in building solid self-esteem. When students don't have well-established self-esteem, behaviors can escalate to serious problems. I know a lot of kids at my school who appear to have really low self- esteem. For example, there are some students who consistently have to go to alternative rooms because they don't know how to control their emotions. Often times, I feel that self-esteem is not the main issue. I don't agree with teachers when they put students that they think are problems in different classrooms.

I believe it further impacts the students and makes them feel like they are different. Many of these students just need love and support from their homes. School becomes a place where they act out to get what they are missing at home

OVERCOMIN G Self-Es teem St ruggles Hi, my name is Shalon, and I want to tell you a little about self-esteem.

I am a 6th-grade student-athlete in Pike Township. I play basketball and football. For basketball, I play for two teams, and it takes up most of my time after school during the week. When I first started going to middle school, I was struggling. I was struggling mainly because of all the work they gave every day and all the homework. It was hard because basketball was kind of in the way of homework, and I started to have missing assignments. My mom saw that my grades were low, and she sat down with me and talked about school and sports. She said, "if you can't keep your grades up, then you can't play sports."

This stuck with me because sports is my life and I didn't want it to go away. I felt sad that everyone around me was getting high grades, and I was not. I would look around the room, and everyone was finishing their work before me, and I knew I was struggling. I felt like I had to rush to keep up with everyone else, but this was not helping either. I would turn in unfinished work that was not my best, and it didn't help my grades either.

Basketball and other parts of my life were going great.

My self-esteem began to drop, and I was feeling terrible. I knew I had to do something different to feel better. I am now learning to balance things, so I don't spend so much time on sports and not turn in my assignments.

I worked hard to bring my grades up. I asked my teachers for extra credit and my missing assignments. I worked on them during some of the off-time that I have. I began going to tutoring and asking questions about things I did not understand.

When I turned in my assignments, it bought up my grades a lot, and I was still able to play sports. My self-esteem began to go back up. I started feeling good about myself, knowing that I had started to accomplish my goal. When my mom told me that I might not be able to play sports, I could have put my head down and not do anything about it. I could have gone on feeling bad about myself, but I took matters into my own hands and found a way to bring up my grades. So, when you are feeling down, and your self-esteem is low, keep going, don't give up, and strive to do your best!

Counselor’s Corner Self-Esteem, is how you see yourself in society. You evaluate yourself either positively or negatively based on your perceptions. The way you see yourself plays an important role on how you interact with others.

It helps determine how you strive and adapt to the environment and has a major role on whether or not you will be successful in the future.

Research has shown that if you have higher self-esteem you tend to be more grounded and happy. You are also healthy mentally and physically unlike those that suffer from low self-esteem and tend to be depressed and unhappy.

Self-esteem is very important when it comes to academics. If you lacks self-esteem, many times you may notice that you struggle academically too. Think about a time you or maybe one of your friends got a poor grade in math and told yourself or your friend stated “I suck, or I’m just not good at this”. This is unhealthy and is how you develop poor self-esteem. Most people don’t even realize that they are doing what we call “negative self- talk”. There is a positive relationship between high self-esteem and being academically successful. When you are academically successful, you take pride in your work. You tend to encourage yourself, work hard and set goals. There are many ways that you can create healthy self-esteem. One way is by remaining positive and speaking positive to yourself. It may seem weird or sound strange, but encouraging yourself- and telling yourself good things, keeps you healthy.

For example: The next time you are feeling down, look in the mirror and tell yourself “I love you”.

Do this every day for a week and watch how great you start to feel.

I will admit at first it might feel strange, but the more you do it, the better you feel.

Another thing you can do to encourage healthy self-esteem is to be aware of when you are not feeling good about yourself, or not feeling confident. Don’t hold these emotions in, there are many trusted adults that you can talk to at school and even at home.

Find a trusted adult and share your feelings. It might even be a good idea to seek out your school counselor or social worker.

They have lots of tools to help you build higher self-esteem.

As a Doctoral student in expressive therapies, I have discovered that using the arts can create an atmosphere where I can feel comfortable and free to express myself. The arts or sports can also offer you a way to develop self-esteem. Always remember that self-esteem starts with you! You are in control of how you feel and you only can add to your own happiness or take away from it. So, find positive ways to encourage and show gratitude to yourself each day!

They're more connected than you think. Friend problems and issues can hurt your self esteem.

Imagine that you are a 12-year-old balancing school, family, friends, and responsibility. A fight breaks out between you and your friends. How would this feel? Devastating? Life-destroying? To a 12-yearold this could feel like the end of the world.

Dosomething.org describes low self esteem as "a thinking disorder in which an individual views him/herself as inadequate, unlovable, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behavior." Finding yourself with this could change the way you view life forever.

That website also tells us "7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don't measure up in some way, including ... relationships with friends and family members."

"What exactly about these friend issues can impact your self esteem?" Here are some possible ways that it can: friends are supposed to lift you, and when you get in a fight with a friend like that, suddenly the person that lifted you up is pulling you down; being in a fight can make someone think that they can't accomplish anything and that they are useless. Thinking that could give you low self esteem. Nobody wants to feel bad about themselves.

B , d r a H e b n a C Moving My transition from Columbus, Ohio, to Indianapolis, Indiana, was quite rough for the first month. Why was it rough, you might ask? It was rough because I missed all my friends back in Ohio, and I didn’t think I could make friends at my new school. I thought the whole school year was going to be rough for me. Now lucky enough, I had a cousin at my new school, so she could show me around and help me make friends, but I still dreaded the thought of having to go to my new school. After the first month of living in Indy, I settled in rather quickly, quicker than I thought. How I got settled was playing basketball in leagues and going to training with different people. After training and playing basketball in these leagues for a little over a month, I finally had to go to school. I dreaded this day for so long I absolutely did not want to go to my new school. I woke up in the morning for the first day of school, and I was very upset with the fact that I had to go to a new school. The first day of school went quickly, but I did like the new school and felt a little better about going back the next day. After the first week of school, I got settled in and made a couple of friends.

After a couple of months at school, I made lots of friends and became a player on the basketball team. Now I’m fully settled in, and I like Indiana a lot better now then I did six months ago.

Teacher's Thoughts Hi, I'm Charleigh, a student Pike High, and I interviewed elementary school principal Kevin Kempton about his thoughts on self-esteem as it relates to students.

Charleigh: So, Mr. Kempton, how many years have you been in education?

Principal Kempton: I've been in education for 31 years.

Charleigh: Wow! Principal Kempton: Okay, you didn't have to respond like that! LOL! Charleigh: Could you give me your definition of self-esteem?

Principal Kempton: I would say self-esteem is the value and belief that you place on yourself as a person and how you feel you interact with the world.

Charleigh: Good or bad, have you noticed self-esteem change in your students over the years? If so, could you give me any examples?

Principal Kempton: Over the years, overall, I have not seen a change. However, in certain kids and their particular self-esteem, yes.

As a society, we either build or take away self-esteem. We do this either deliberately or accidentally by knocking down or building up self-esteem.

Students either have very big self-esteem or little to none. We've got to do a better job of fostering talent rather than tearing down. Nurturing of talent has to happen within the students' families as well.

Charleigh: What advice do you have for students struggling with self-esteem?

Principal Kempton: I would tell students to rely on trusted adults for guidance. Realize that you have something unique that others do not possess. Don't weigh significance on bad things but on how you impact lives and others around you and in the world. Begin to compare yourself to people who have opportunities and measure self-esteem based on positivity. With social media, connect with positive groups but also understand that online bullying happens, but it's not the real world. Charleigh: Thank you for your time, Mr. Kempton!

What is Acne?

The scientific name is Acne Vulgaris. It is a common condition in people age 7 through the teenage years. There are different types of acne which you may be familiar with: white heads and black heads. Your skin has lots of tiny holes called pores and small, fine hairs. (Yes, you have hairs on your face). Hairs grow from a base called a follicle which is located in a pore or hole. In the holes with follicles, your skin makes oils to keep your hair nourished and protected called sebum.

When your skin cells become old and come off, sometimes they can clog your pores. Bacteria that naturally live on our skin become trapped and mix with sebum, which leads to inflammation and causes pimples.

Why does it happen?

As your body is changing and you are going through puberty, your hormone levels go up and down irregularly. One type of hormones involved in puberty are called Androgens. These hormones tell the body to make sebum. So, when the hormone levels increase, you make more sebum, which can clog your pores as we talked about above, causing acne.

How do I prevent it?

Pimples and acne are frustrating and you are not alone in your frustration. One of the best ways to help prevent acne is to be mindful of putting your hands on your face. Your hands have bacteria on them which can mix with sebum and cause more or worse acne. Another important step of preventing acne is washing your face regularly, both morning and night. There are some key ingredients to look for in your face washes: Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide. These both work to fight acne by getting rid of the “plug� over your pores. But be careful-they also bleach fabrics. Your mom may appreciate if you use white towels and not her brightly colored ones.

What if t hat doesn’t work?

If washing your hands and face regularly is not changing your acne after 2 weeks, talk to your doctor. There are some medications and creams that we can prescribe that help. Sometimes a small dose of antibiotics you take by mouth can help.

Other times you may be given a cream which is a combination of an antibiotic and Benzoyl Peroxide to put on your face. Also Retinoic Acid (Retin-A) cream is a commonly prescribed medication that helps with severe acne. All of these creams make your facial skin very sensitive to light so PLEASE wear sunscreen if you are outside!!

When will it go away?

It usually improves as puberty comes to an end. Some people still have some flairs into their 20’s also. Stay hopeful and stick with your skin care regimen.
