Tips to picking...

A Realistic New Year’s Resolution! of It's that time year again... to make New Year's resolutions. So every year everyone makes resolutions but does everyone fulfill them. The answer is, not really. We all make them but never want to do them, I know I do that all the time. Well, no fear because I've come up with a solution. For example a lot of people want to exercise or become more fit but it becomes so hard with everyday struggles. So I started thinking I figured I could do at least 5 push-ups or so every morning. I do a mini work out, well not really, but anyways I do 7 push-ups, 5 situps, and 30 sec. plank. I do that for a week then I switch it up and do three different exercises and all those morning that I honestly didn't want to do it I just said all it takes is saying yes. So no matter whether you just want to read more or improve on a sport or learning something new ...it all starts by you saying yes!

Be passionate about your goals!

When making your New Year's resolutions let these goals become ambitions that you are passionate about. Part of the fun of making a New Year's resolution list is the excitement you get thinking about actually achieving these goals! Think about all the things you would LOVE to do, but didn't have the time for in past years, or even were too scared to try! Now is the time to bring out those quiet maybes and turn them into ďŹ erce yes's!

2

Make an achievable plan!

When making your New Year's resolutions make a plan of how you're going to achieve them. For example: Say you want to learn how to play guitar. Make a chart of the days a week you're going to practice each chord. Set little landmarks along the way too! When you make a schedule of how you're going to achieve these goals, it becomes a lot more real.

1

Don’t get down on your self!

This is the most important one of them ALL. Do not ( I repeat) do not get down on yourself for not meeting all of the resolutions you made. Although this is called a New Year's resolution, these resolutions are goals that go beyond just this year. And it's never too late to keep pursuing them. I would encourage you to make these resolutions with the mind that even if I don't make these I am still awesome and I can still pursue them.

National Drinking Straw Day: DIY Drinking Straw Sunburst Frame: Materials: Cardboard ring: Trace a few bowls and cut it out. Hot glue gun: You use a lot of glue. Drinking straws: About 200 straws depending on the size of your ring. You want to use straight straws. Spray paint: 2 cans of spray paint, any color you want Directions: 1. Plug in the glue gun and get your supplies ready. 2. Start gluing the straws in a circle around the ring. Glue them in a circular pattern (straight out) with little space in between. 3. After you’ve got one layer glued, do another to fill in the gaps. Keep the glue hidden and not goop it all over the place. 4. Cut the straws in halves or thirds and keep gluing until you get the look you want and where everything is covered. For the last layer cut straws short and glue them in places that would finish the look. After that, trim the other straws at random lengths so they aren’t all the same lengths. 5. Once all the straws are secure and in place, its time to spray paint. Set your project off the ground over the grass. Putting it on two plastic cups in the grass would work to get it off the ground. Paint the ends of the straws, and really get it all over and around the sides. Spray the front then after the front has dried, spray the back and then spray the front again. 6. After you have completed all these steps, your project is complete! Designer Smog Masks are Taking China by Storm

China's industrial economy has skyrocketed, and with it has emerged air pollution levels that are immeasurable on a normal scale. This gray smog that has consumed China, when breathed in, can be extremely detrimental to your health, causing a plurality of different conditions, many of which can result in death. Because of this smog problem, the Chinese are advised to wear smog masks at all times when they are outside. This is a big problem in China, but clothing designers see it as a new opportunity. Designers in China are creating amazing masks of varying shapes and sizes, ranging from lightweight fabric masks to full-fledged gas masks. They’re using materials such as silk, cotton, and neoprene. Most notably is a Chinese designer that turned a pair of Yeezy Boost 350 v2 shoes into a gas mask. These shoes by themselves have a value upwards of $1,000, and the finished mask is worth $10,000. What's next? Are popular brands going start to make these crazy masks too? Is America going to adopt this unique style for everyday use? We'll just have to wait and see.

Politics: Trump vs. Clinton Will Donald Trump Be A Good President?

Donald Trump, our new President-Elect, is taking ofďŹ ce on January 21st, 2017. His outlandish statements before and during the election have divided the nation, pitting Hillary supporters against Trump supporters because of their extremely contradictory views. I wanted Donald Trump to win because of his views on the American economy and his plan to ďŹ x it. I didn't enjoy Trump's controversial statements either, but what they did was bring the focus onto him. He needed a way to grab the people's attention, and he did it like no one has ever done before. No one took him seriously, and this was his way of changing their minds. It was a horrid election for both sides, but at the end of the gruesome battle, Trump emerged victoriously. Will he really "Make America Great Again?" I sure do hope so. I wish the best of luck to our new orange-faced PresidentElect, Donald Trump.

Thoughts On Why Hillary Should Have Won...

In my opinion, Hillary Clinton should have won the presidency. She wasn’t my first choice, or my second, or even my third, but at least she had experience. I could rant on and on about how she was one thousand times better than our president-elect, or even why, in my opinion how all of the terrible things the media said about her were wrong, but we’ve heard those things over and over. I’d like to share with you the amazing things Hillary has completed in her life, the things overlooked by the media that you probably haven’t even heard about. Hillary Clinton was born in 1947 in a middle class home in a suburban of Chicago. After graduating high school, she attended Wellesley College, where she became involved with social justice activism-or human rights and equality work. She then enrolled in Yale Law School and was one of only 27 women in her graduating class! After Yale, she started working for the Children’s Defense Fund where she went door to door discussing the lack of schooling for children with disabilities. Hillary then moved to Arkansas, where she worked in the criminal law field. After getting married to Bill Clinton, she became the first female lawyer at Rose Law Firm, and shortly after, their first female associate. Once she became first lady of Arkansas, Hillary decided to improve her state’s health care and education systems. A few years later, her husband was elected President. Hillary was then able to use her position as First Lady to promote affordable health care. She spoke out against human rights abuses, terrorism, and educational rights for children. In 2008, she ran for President, and lost, but soon was chosen as Secretary of State. Hillary spoke up for women and girls in foreign countries, averted many wars, fought for LGBTQ+ rights, and accomplished much, much more in her time as Secretary of State. In April, 2015 she announced that she would be running for President, but again lost. No matter if you like Hillary or not, there’s no denying that she is an amazing woman who has accomplished a lot in her lifetime. Sure, she’s made many mistakes, but all humans make mistakes. The same thing could be said about the other candidate, but Hillary actually has experience in government. No matter whose side you're on, most people would agree that it’s pretty cool we finally got a woman’s name on the ballot. On the other hand, it absolutely disgusts me that in 2016 a qualified woman ran a wonderful campaign AND won the popular vote, but was still denied office because the media insisted everything she did was wrong. From the way she looked at ballons and the way she dressed, to comparing her husband’s scandals to Trump’s, the media picked at all of it. The power of the media decided the President, and the people listened.

What country were you born in? I was born in Nigeria, in West Africa. I moved to the states in 2010.

Did you go to school there and how is the school different from the schools here? Yes, I went to grade school, high school and medical school in Nigeria. The way it's set up over there is a little different from here. We have elementary schools there that are called primary schools. Middle school is called just ni or secondary, and high school is called senior secondary. We spend the same amount of years in school. Medical school in Nigeria is a straight six years, so you don't have to do an undergraduate degree before hand.

When did you know that you were going to be a Doctor? I always liked helping people and have always been interested in other people's stories. I decided when I was in high school that I wanted to be a doctor. It was more challenging picking out what type of doctor I wanted to be as there were so many choices! I'm glad I decided to be a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist as it offers me the best chance of interacting with children and their families, so I can know and help them.

“And His plans for you are beyond your wildest dreams! 20 January 2017

What was Middle School/ 6-8 grade like in Nigeria and what advice would you give to kids in 6-8th grade? Middle school while I was growing up in Nigeria was similar to the experience you guys have today. There is excitement about no longer being in elementary school but at the same time some anxiety about the future and growing up. I'm grateful for the inuence of godly teachers that helped answer my questions and pointed me in the right direction. This is also my advice to you guys- always reach out to an understanding grown-up in your life to help answer some of those questions you have. It's okay not to know, just ask! And remember to put God ďŹ rst in everything! He cares for us!

Looking back what advice would you give your self growing up? Looking back, the one thing I'd say to my younger self is 'stop worrying so much!' God's got you! And His plans for you are beyond your wildest dreams! You can't love yourself more than He loves you!

High Steppers

SHOUTOUT

High Steppers is a good opportunity to try out and join. It's a good step team where you can be confident, show off what you know and learn new things every day. It's also a good way to keep your grades up. Our team is like a family; if you need help with anything they will get right to it. High Steppers is a place where you can tell others how you feel. I know it might be tough, but when things are difficult you can get through it faster and better. Rolando Berry is a good drill master; he founded High Steppers in 1979 first known as the Blind Boone High Steppers. As a child, he belonged to many drill teams. T-man is a good drum master, and he wants every beat to be on point, even for the steppers. Squirrel is a good dance instructor if one person doesn't know a move we all do the move until that person gets it. He's also fun and funny at times. "Game face," he says to everyone which means to stay still and get ready for showtime or just stay still. All of my friends and drill masters have helped me stop being shy of dancing, hitting my moves on point and keeping my grades up. I started in fourth grade and stopped for a while and then came back my 8th-grade year and joined High Steppers again in 2016.

MEET KALIN! My name is Kalin, I’m 13 and I am in eighth grade. I go to Chester Boren Middle School in Centralia. I’ve grown up around sports, in fact I started attending basketball practice when I was an infant when my mom coached. My dad still coaches at Centralia High School. I am involved in many sports like basketball, softball and track. I also do dance at Janet’s Dance Studio and have been dancing for 10 years now….I started when I was 4. I was born without fingers on my left hand aka my “baby hand”. Some doctors think I had Amniotic Band Syndrome which is when the umbilical cord gets wrapped around your fingers. Other doctors say there was a circulation issue. We will never know for sure but really it doesn’t matter as it does not change anything. There are struggles for me at times because I have to learn how to do things in a different way. I have had to learn multiple things like weight lifting differently. With my dad also being a PE teacher, we knew I was going to have to do weight lifting in high school for a grade as well as for sports. Of course it took time, creativity and determination but we did figure it out. I also have struggled with braided hair. It’s something I always thought was cool and wanted to do, but having only 5 fingers was very inconvenient. With lots of practice I have been able to accomplish my goal. There are times when I feel like something is too hard for me just because I don’t have all 10 fingers. However, I have a great family, friends and coaches who tell me that I am good enough and I can do anything that someone with 10 fingers can. I don’t know why God made me like this but I know it is for a reason and I accept that! Everyone has their challenges and this just so happens to be mine and I’m learning to never give up and always keep trying.

EnCircle Technologies

A Room to Learn & Grow... We all need a place to learn, grow and become more confident, right? On the top floor of a downtown church in Columbia, Missouri, there is that kind of place. Inside it has yellow walls, two Marvel Comic and one Star War posters, comfy couches and office chairs. One of the big things you notice is the number of computers in this homey space. Here, either high school students or young adults with autism learn technology skills on these computers. EnCircle Technologies was started because we believe in the potential and promise of our students with autism. If you don’t know, having autism means that you have certain kinds of challenges on a regular basis than someone else. One of those challenges might involve how well you make friends; another might be how you “get” or don’t “get” what someone is trying to say; or, perhaps you have a special interest in a certain area that only you want to talk about. These can all by signs of having autism. Some people with autism are different than others with autism; they are all unique, although diagnosed by a doctor with the same thing.

FEAT URED

At EnCircle, we know that often these people can have a hard time being understood or even accepted. We like to tell the world how wonderful people with autism are and how sometimes you have to be open to seeing the good qualities in someone who might be different or who might be having problems at school. Here, in this yellow room, we like to welcome our students and let them know that we’re cheering for them to get a good job one day. They learn technology skills to build websites, or to produce websites, or learn code. I started EnCircle with another mother who was worried for her son. We have welcomed more than 20 students in a short amount of time. Some now have jobs or are going to college after they learn skills at EnCircle. If you know of someone with autism, please tell them about us! Also, please be kind and cheer for them wherever you are. P.S. We have a big video game tournament in the fall. Please check it out on our website; maybe next year, you’ll want to play in it.

SPOT LIGHT T WEEN ON THE COVER: ELIZABETH

My name is Elizabeth. I’m 11 years old and go to Lange Middle School. When I was in 5th grade, at Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School, I asked my mom to sign me up for Girls on the Run because a teacher wanted me to join. I was excited, but during the meetings, I was unsure how to answer questions. So, I didn’t. My coaches encouraged me to participate. I then began to ask questions, make suggestions, set goals, walk and jogged some. My confidence got better.

FEAT URED

Before, I wasn’t comfortable with myself because of how I looked, what others said about me and not being able to express my emotions. These struggles made me feel bad about myself and who I am. Girls on the Run helped me build my confidence and self-esteem by teaching us about different things such as expressing emotions, how to deal with bullies, resolving conflicts, friendships, asking for and giving help and connections with other people. Other girls in the program helped me by telling me what they like about me – I’m friendly, happy, motivated, a good listener, help others and am more confident. What I like best about myself is helping others feel good about themselves. When my friends are being bullied, I tell them to walk away, tell an adult and don’t believe what the bully says. I tell them what their strengths are and encourage them to believe in themselves by helping them figure out what their good qualities are. I know I feel more confident when I sing, play the clarinet, and when I’m with family and friends. Being in Girls on the Run was very important in helping me emotionally and physically. I was really nervous, but I really like being able to give a speech at the fundraiser in August and the 5K in November. The most challenging part was doing the practice and participating in the 5K. Having my teammates come back for me made me feel joyful and happy. My family helped me practice, and my walking buddies at the 5K's did too. The best advice I can give other girls is to believe in themselves, join Girls on the Run and enjoy the new friends they will meet. I plan on continuing with the Girls on the Run, and I'm hoping it continues to push me.

Dear Future Me No one ever talks to me, and when they do it always feels like mean things. I mean I have friends, but they all seem to have more friends than me, and I'm just tagging along. It seems like everyone in school wants me to know that I am different. Is this going to last forever? Past You *Name changed for anonymity

Dear Past Me Short answer- no, middle school won’t last forever (thank goodness!). Longer answer- no, middle school won't last forever, but yes, you will always be different. That's not necessarily bad news, though! It's amazing, miraculous even that there is not one person on this planet that is exactly like you! Learning to love your true and imperfect self can be a difficult and daunting task, but it is the most rewarding thing you'll ever set your mind to. Try approaching your self-love the same way you would breaking a bad habit, practice! Everyday tell yourself in the mirror "I love you!". I mean, really look yourself in the eyes, point at your own reflection and say it like you mean it. It sounds and feels weird at first, but the more often you say it, the more it begins to feel natural, and you start to believe what you're saying. When you love yourself so boldly, the world won't be able to help but follow. Future You

OVERCOMER STORY Being a teenage girl can be very difficult, especially when thoughts about your self-confidence and self-esteem get in the way. When I began sixth grade, I always thought I wasn't as pretty as all of the other girls that were at my school. I would always try to fit in with the "cool crowd." As I would hang around with them, I liked the results, until I realized I was the exact same as all of them. There was nothing unique about me at all, so I knew something would have to change.

ST RICT LY T WEENS

During seventh grade, I started to find out more about myself. I noticed that I had an ambition for acting and dancing. Then, I realized I started becoming friends with people I had a lot of things in common with. Those people didn't care about looks, fitting in, or what people thought about them. They just worked toward their goals and did what they wanted to do, rather than what everyone else did. That's when I knew who I wanted to surround myself with. Now, as an eight grader, I have learned that beauty isn't about your looks. Beauty signifies your self-respect, self-love, self-confidence, and self esteem. I am proud to say that I am an overcomer.

Counselor’s Corner A new year brings thoughts of change. What can we do better? We will be flooded with advertisements encouraging us to look at our lives in and make changes. We will be asked by celebrities to look at our bodies, figure out what is wrong and then focus on making a change to that area. This year, I challenge you to focus on acceptance rather than change. One way to start accepting yourself is to list your strengths AND your weaknesses. Look at the list – how do your strengths help you? How do your strengths burden you? If you are an amazing swimmer, this strength helps you in that you get to compete in a sport that keeps you in great health; being an amazing swimmer may burden you because you feel like you are stuck with this sport. All strengths can impact us in positive and negative ways, just as all weaknesses can be blessings and burdens. If your weakness is struggling to talk in front of a group of people – this is great because you can easily say no thank you to giving a talk in front of your 4-H club, but this can be a bummer when your mom says you don't have a choice but to give the talk. Either way, the strength or weakness is a part of who you are and acceptance can bring peace. A school is a place where you may struggle to accept your strengths and weaknesses; the expectations can be exhausting. Your friends may want you to hang out with them before school, even though your teacher is expecting you to come in and talk about that test you bombed. Your parents are expecting you to make good friend choices, get your homework done and excel at your chosen after school activity. And the pressure doesn’t stop once you get home either. At home, you have to reply to snap chats, post a cool Instagram picture and look up the latest YouTube video.

ST RICT LY T WEENS

Little time is left for you to pause, take note of how you are doing and accept that you may feel tired and need to turn off the chatter’ and focus on your personal needs. Focusing on your needs can be a part of accepting how you are doing without the burden of living up to the expectations of others. Comparing who we are to others is easy to do – when we are sitting in class, how can we not look at the girl next to us wearing cute Birkenstocks and think…I wish I could afford shoes like that. Or when we are in gym class, and another kid can do 15 pull-ups, our brain can pretty quickly go to judging our inability to do even one pull-up. Our thoughts may automatically go to thinking that everyone else is happy. Of course, we can find others who are better at something than us – there will always be people in our lives who are wealthier, smarter, skinnier, more out-going or braver. But we can only truly compare ourselves to ourselves. Are we doing the best we can today? Are we accepting our strengths and weaknesses? We can desire to be the best basketball player in the country, but few of us will reach this goal – we have to be realistic and accept that we can only do OUR best, not Lebron James’ best! Accepting who we are IS easier said than done, but focusing on accepting our strengths and weaknesses and only comparing ourselves to our best can be a great place to start. The new year will bring new adventures and new opportunities to find peace in accepting ourselves, both good and bad!

ST RICT LY T WEENS

October 9, 2012, schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen for speaking out on girls rights to be educated. "We know that terrorists are afraid of the power of education." -Malala She was only 15 at the time of the accident. Malala stood up for her right to be educated when she was so young. After she had spoken out, a Taliban gunman shot her in the head. After critical care in the local hospital, she survived. So she spoke out more. In the past four years, she has become an outspoken, international symbol for equality and bravery within children and young women. She was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 (and won). She now has a book about her continuing struggle for equality called "I am Malala."

THE KNOW HOW

Master the

Smokey Eye! Step 1:

When doing a smokey eye, I recommend first applying an eye primer. You can use any eye primer you want to. I typically use the "ELF Eye Primer and Liner Sealer." This product can be found at any local store or beauty store. Apply the eye primer all over the lid and above the lid. You do not always need an eye primer, but they are good to use if you are going on a date or out somewhere fancy and you do not want your eye shadow to be creasing.

Step 2:

Once your primer is all set, you are ready to apply eye shadow. Find a taupe color like a very light brown or tan shadow. Using any fluffy brush you have, apply the product all over your lid or wherever you applied your primer. By doing this, the shadow sets the primer and will prepare your eye with a base.

Step 3:

With the same brush find a little bit darker brown shade and apply just above the crease; not the lid but above it. This color will provide a transition shade. A transition shade is the color that brings the look together. It will help with blending the colors.

Step 4:

Now that you have applied two shades of a lighter brown; take a dark pink tone or a maroon color and apply on your crease. This step will make your crease dark, and prepare for smoking out the other colors.

Step 5:

Now you can use any blending brush you own and blend slightly. If you blend all the way it will typically blend out the colors and you will make a messy effect. 52 January 2017

Step 6:

THE KNOW HOW

Time for the smokey part. Take any dark brown eye shadow, and an angled eyeshadow brush. My personal favorite is the "ELF Professional DeďŹ ning Brush." Take small amounts of the brown, the more you apply the darker and smokier the eye. Apply the product in the corner of your eye and just blend up. This step is very important, blend your product throughout the corner and outer part of your eye.

Step 7:

At this point, you can take any light pink or white eye shadow you have and apply a little bit of this to the inner corner of your eye to make it pop.

Step 8:

If you want to go the extra mile and slay your look you can use any liquid eyeliner and create a wing liner. This will create a sexy look for a night out or just an everyday look.

Final Step:

You can keep darkening your eye or add to your eye by maybe applying glitter or anything you would like. Just remember to blend out the sharp lines and make it your own.

THE KNOW HOW

Parent’s Corner Body image is extremely important because it affects our self-esteem and our self-esteem affects how we feel about ourselves and our lives. We should work every day to affect our self-esteem positively and the self-esteem of others by promoting positive body image every day. This sometimes can be hard though with all of the distractions and images that we are given through the media and in social networking outlets. However, if you try one of these activities at least once every day or week, you can improve your perception of how you look and how that makes you feel. Happiness is beautiful. Here is a list of ways to help promote positive body image and selfesteem throughout the year and daily:

1. Mirror activity- take a mirror from the dollar tree or any

convenience store and write positive things about yourself that you can see daily when you use it.

2. Write a love letter to yourself, praising yourself for all your

qualities, physical and personality wise that you just adore.

3. Keep a journal- writing down thoughts and ideas every day can

help you ďŹ nd the source of negativity when it comes to how you view your body image or even your source of positivity

4. Create a Vision board with cut-outs from magazines, quotes,

books, newspapers and pictures about how you want to present your best self and what you want your self-image to be

5. Surround yourself with positive people and individuals who

support you, encourage you, and accept you for who you are daily!

I think number 5 is the most important because our environment has a pivotal role in how we feel about ourselves. Our role within the environment and the people that we surround ourselves with can help affect how we feel about ourselves. If you're around people who are constantly praising you for your strength and good qualities, then you'll feel happier and have a better self-body image. I hope these tips can be of help to anyone struggling with body positivity and positive self-perception. Happy Holidays and remember you are Beautiful Just the Way YOU ARE.

THE KNOW HOW

Health & Wellness What is Asthma?

A respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It usually results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity. At the age of three, I was diagnosed with Asthma. Kids with asthma, in this world, have had to go to the doctor more times than any kid would want to imagine. Most kids diagnosed with asthma have parents that usually don’t know what it is like unless the parents themselves have been smoking. Asthma is an active disease that is causing the lungs not to filter the air properly, causing the host to have trouble breathing, sometimes causing asthma attacks. Most children have had this their whole life, and some lose it just by being active. Others have it for a lifetime, and it’s not something that makes people happy, it's just the reality. Anyone can still have a happy life, even "normal" some might call it, but it’s not that bad. I personally think that I have a good life even with asthma.

THE KNOW HOW

This is how I got home from school...

1.

We heard that a bus crashed into a tree and 40 other buses were stuck.

2. Our bus nearly hit a car. 3. We saw ashing lights everywhere! 4. We were going down a hill and the brakes didn’t work. 5. We started going uphill and then our bus ran into the curb and tilted halfway over before falling back into place.

6. We just stayed still until the bus slid sideways across the

whole road and we got stuck like that for over two hours.

7. Everybody was screaming, crying, and freaking out. One girl had an asthma attack.

8. The bus remained stuck long after I arrived home safe. Sarah, 13

THE KNOW HOW

Jr.

I’ve been involved with BoldlyU and the BoldlyUs committee for a few months now, and I’m still in awe of how tweens and teens can come together and make such an amazing magazine, cover to cover. Most magazine aren’t manufactured for kids our age, and if they are, they’re written by adults and aren’t usually relevant. The fact that the BoldlyU magazine's entire idea is to have something written by kids, for kids, makes me passionate about writing for it. The teens who write for BoldlyU are a part of the BoldlyUs committee. Once a month, we get together and brainstorm article ideas over a nice meal, and that's where the magic happens. We have a chance to share our ideas and hear other's thoughts. We are absolutely vital to the making of this magazine, without our writing, you wouldn't have the great information you're holding right now! Writing for BoldlyU also helps me improve my skills as an author. Writing a new article every month has definitely expanded my abilities, especially when I’m passionate about what I’m writing! There are many ways to get involved with BoldlyU or BoldlyUs. You can always add a selfie to our magazine by using the hashtag “#boldlyuselfie”! If you are looking to get involved with BoldlyUs, we’d love to meet you! You can join us at our monthly meetings to make new friends, eat yummy food, and brainstorm ideas. For more information, please follow us on social media or contact info@boldlyu.com! Thank you for reading our work!
