Letter from the Editor
First off, I would like to apologize to all my BoldlyU readers and contributers for not doing my all to get our Nov/Dec issue out. Due to a lot of circumstances out of my control and some I failed on, there wasn't one. However, we are back stronger and are ready to get your stories out to help others. As you get ready to read the Bullying issue, I want to share that I struggled with being bullied. Even today it still makes it hard on some tasks because I can hear the voices in my head that I heard for years...I'm not good enough. When I was deciding whether or not we were going to be able to put the Nov/Dec issue out I felt like I let everyone down and once again I wasn't good enough. With that I also struggle with anxiety and depression and during this time I felt some of that struggle. I did have to take some time to regroup and figure out what was my why. Why was I doing this magazine and why did it hit me so hard when I thought it might fail? My why is YOU and to let you know the Bully's aren't going to win! YOU ARE, I AM, together we can make a difference. They can speak those words but we don't have to accept them. Words hurt when we believe them, and say them to ourselves over and over. Believe in you like I believe in you! I think you are AMAZING!
Darla H. OUR MISSION: BoldlyU Magazine is specifically designed for tweens, to encourage them to be brave, to be bold and to be themselves by providing a place for them to share their stories, struggles and passions. It is a positive resource to empower them to build confidence within themselves while also helping others!
Most of this content is written by tweens for tweens!

Breat h of t he Wild GAME REVIEW
Breath of the Wild features a vast open world for Link to explore. Most of Hyrule’s scenery is accessible by walking, paragliding or climbing. While the game still includes barriers (such as weather effects, inhospitable environments or strong enemies), many of these can be overcome by using Food, effective weapons and armor or finding alternate routes. The world also includes an elaborate physics system which allows for creative interactions (e.g., cutting down a tree and using its trunk as a raft on a river, or setting grass ablaze and spreading the fire with wind gusts). Unlike many previous Zelda games, Breath of the Wild does not enforce a specific order in which quests or dungeons have to be solved, with the exception of completing the starting tasks on the Great Plateau. It is possible to challenge Ganon right after leaving the starting area, though the game does encourage exploration in order to solve Ancient Shrines (and thus gaining additional Hearts or Stamina), find useful and powerful equipment, and defeat the game’s own version of dungeons, the Divine Beasts. Additionally, many of the game’s puzzles can also be solved in various different ways, often rewarding Link for creative solutions. Cont rols Link’s controls in Breath of the Wild are reminiscent of previous 3D Zelda games. However, the game is the first to require manual jumps as opposed to auto-jumping over small gaps which was introduced with Ocarina of Time and a long-time staple of The Legend of Zelda series. 10

Cooking A new feature introduced with Breath of the Wild is Cooking, which enables the creation of Food that recovers Hearts and bestows various effects on Link. Meals are cooked by broiling up to five edible Materials at cooking pots, such as meat, berries, fruits or herbs. Elixirs can be mixed by including monster parts in various recipes. Depending on chosen ingredients, Link’s health will be replenished and/or he will receive effects such as Elemental Resistance, additional Stamina or Hearts, or buffs to his Defense or Attack. Equipment & Durability Link can equip a vast variety of different Equipment in Breath of the Wild, including Weapons, Bows and Arrows, Shields, and Armor, allowing for adaptation to the ever-changing environment of Hyrule and tactics used by different enemies. Notably, almost all Weapons, Bows, and Shields found in the game will break after a certain amount of hits. This new Durability system often forces Link to use Equipment salvaged from enemies, even weak ones, instead of just wielding the best Sword available in the game. Equipment that has not been used at all, and thus has sustained no damage, is indicated by a sparkle on the top-right corner of its icon in the Inventory screen. An Equipment that is close to breaking will have a flashing red icon, and a brief notification will appear whenever it is taken out. Rune Abilit ies Main article: Rune Completing the initial four Ancient Shrines on the Great Plateau bestows Link with four Rune abilities: Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis and Remote Bombs. These abilities allow Link to manipulate the environment by lifting magnetic objects, freezing objects (and later enemies) in time, creating blocks of ice on water surfaces, and summoning bombs. Other Runes, such as the Camera Rune, can also be found. Together with climbing and paragliding, these abilities are used throughout the rest of the game and (for the very most part) sufficient to solve puzzles and access most of Hyrule. As a consequence, the game does not feature traditional dungeon items that grant abilities to Link.

Valentine’s Day Cookie Recipe Ingredients: 2 and 1/4 cups (281g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar 1 large egg, at room temperature 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract optional for added flavor: 1/4 teaspoon almond extract Royal Icing: 4 cups (480g) confectioners' sugar, sifted 3 Tablespoons meringue powder 6-7 Tablespoons room temperature water Americolor Soft Gel Paste Color Kit for coloring Directions: Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside. In a large bowl using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Add the granulated sugar and beat on medium-high speed until creamed, about 2 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using) and beat on high speed until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl and beat again as needed to combine. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low until combined. If the dough seems too soft, you can add 1 Tablespoon more flour until it is a better consistency for rolling. Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Roll each portion out onto a piece of parchment paper or a lightly floured silicone baking mat (I prefer the nonstick silicone mat) to about 1/4 thickness. The rolled-out dough can be any shape, as long as it is evenly ¼-inch thick. Stack the pieces, with parchment paper between the two, onto a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours and up to 2 days. If chilling for more than a couple hours, cover the top dough piece with a single piece of parchment paper. Once chilled, preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Remove one of the dough pieces from the refrigerator and using a heart cookie cutter, cut into heart shapes. Re-roll the remaining dough and continue cutting until all is used. Repeat with 2nd dough piece. 14

Recipe Continued... Bake for 10-11 minutes, until lightly browned around the edges. Make sure you rotate the baking sheet halfway through bake time. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating. Make the icing: In a large bowl using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat all of the icing ingredients together on high speed for 5 minutes. When lifting the whisk up off the icing, the icing should drizzle down and smooth out within 10-12 seconds. If it's too thick, add a little more water. If it's too thin, add a little more sifted confectioners' sugar. Separate icing into 6 different bowls. Stir in 1 tiny drop of the following colors into each bowl, 1 color per bowl: pink, violet, green, yellow, and orange. The 6th bowl is for the writing. Use 2-3 drops of red. Add icing to piping bag fitted with round icing tip #5. Decorate cookies with colored icing. Use round icing tip #1 for writing. Do not cover cookies as icing sets. Icing will set within 4-6 hours. Decorated or plain cookies stay fresh covered at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Make-ahead tip: Plain cookies freeze well up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator. I do not recommend freezing with icing on top. You can chill the rolled-out cookie dough in the refrigerator for up to 2 days (step 5). You can also freeze the cookie dough (before rolling out in step 4) for up to 3 months. Then allow to thaw overnight in the refrigerator and bring to room temperature before rolling out. Chill for only 30 minutes in step 5 as opposed to 1 full hour.

Spring Break Fun Spring break is so awesome because I get to be out of school and go to beautiful places such as Florida, Mexico, or wherever the weather is warm and the sun is always shining. My favorite thing about spring break is being able to jump in the ocean and see wildlife while it’s 80 to 90 degrees outside. I also like to fish, go to new amusement parks, and have some relaxation time. Another part of spring break that I really enjoy is the seafood. The seafood is the best part about spring break because there are so many things to try like shark, crawfish, swordfish, and mahi mahi which is a fish I still want to try. This is all of the things I like to do and want to do during spring break. I hope you enjoy spring break as much as I do.

Recess Transformed My Life: How I Built Confidence and Became a Leader on t he Playground Months ago, clusters of kids I didn’t know in the hallways, in the lunchroom, and even on the playground would intimidate me. I’ve always worked hard to get good grades and had a solid friend group. But, sometimes, I just felt uncomfortable. My shyness prevented me from getting to know more of my peers. This school year, I became a Junior Coach for Playworks, a nonprofit that works with schools to help kids become the best they can be through play. Everything changed. As a Junior Coach, I am one of a small group of kids who meet once a week with our mentor, Coach Ceria, who helps us learn how to become leaders on the playground. We learn how to speak in front of others, how to teach and play new skill-building games, and how to encourage younger students to get in the game during recess. On Tuesdays, I lead recess for kindergarteners alongside Coach Ceira. I love playing basketball and teaching games, like tic-tac-toe relay. If I see someone sitting on the sidelines, I approach my classmate and ask: “What’s wrong and what would you like to play?” If I see people fighting over who can use the jump rope first, I help them play a game of “ro-sham-bo” to settle the disagreement so that we can all get back to playing and having fun. If I’m having a hard time getting a group of kids to quiet down and listen to instructions, I use one of the attention getters I have learned to help kids stay focused. We always high-five each other at the end whether we win or lose. We encourage each other to learn, have fun, and do the best we can. Now, I have everyone’s name memorized. I can go up to kids in class, in the hallways and in the lunchroom to say “hi” or help if I see someone is having a bad day. And, after school, I take what I’ve learned about how to communicate and work together as a team, and bring it to volleyball and basketball practice. I also teach new games to my little brother and cousins at home. It’s hard for me to explain. But, I feel good, and I like helping others. It’s fun! Becoming a Playworks Junior Coach helped me find my leader within. And, I have Coach Ceira and the kids on the playground during recess to thank for that.

I am an eighth grader who enjoys the performing arts and being in nature. My talents include dancing and acting. I excel at both because I work hard at them. I am an observer, learner, and doer when it comes to the performing arts. In addition, I enjoy the outdoors. Nature is all around us every day. I always take time to appreciate it. Seeing the sun first thing in the morning, when it is gleaming on the morning dew is a wonderful sight to see. It makes me empowered to face a new day. I enjoy musical theater because I get to dance, act, and sing. I enjoy becoming the character and not just acting in a play. The first real play I performed in was the “Seussical” when I was 9 years old. We had six great performances. I liked entertaining the audience with my talents. I like going to see plays as well. Most recently, I was able to see “Honk!” twice performed by Brownsburg High School. It was amazing to see how everyone got into his or her role. Every time I go to a play, I really get inspired. It makes me look forward to my future goals in acting. When I go to high school, I plan to join musical theater and the drama club. I know that I will get one of the main roles in a future play. After high school, I plan to study performing arts in college. My dream is to join the cast of a famous Broadway Musical in New York City one day.
FEAT URED I have a passion for dance. It is so natural for me. I am currently in the Dance Company at Dance Legacy Studio. My classes are ballet, jazz, tap, and tumbling. Dancing allows me to have fun with music. Showing off my best moves keeps me going and aspiring to become a better dancer. In particular, my ballet class allows me to increase my flexibility. I always have to keep my chin up, hips up, tummy in, and legs straight. I attend dance workshops to help me improve my dance moves. I will be performing next year in several national competitions with my Dance Company and in a Dance Trio with two of my friends. Dancing allows me to show my feeling in a creative way. Last year at my school’s pep rally I was able to choreograph and perform a special dance in honor of my friend Nathan, who is now in heaven. Furthermore, I am a nature enthusiast. I am always exploring the woods in my backyard to view the beauty of the trees and wildlife. Sometimes when I ride in the car, I listen to music and look at nature through the window. Nature is one of God’s creations and the thing I love most about it is that I feel a positive connection with it. Autumn is my favorite season. The leaves changing colors allows the earth to show off its beauty. Hearing a thunderstorm reminds me to be grateful for the rain that waters the earth. What makes the world go around for me is dance and nature. I like to connect with both because of the positive energy I get from them. Dance allows me to show the world moves that help to celebrate music. Nature reminds me to pause in the moment and respect all the great creation around me.

Jodi & Chris
1. Have you both been musical your whole life?
Chris & I both come from musical families. My parents did duets in church as long as I can remember, and Chris’ dad sang in a gospel quartet. Chris first played bass and toured with his dad’s group called “The Muddy River Quartet”. I took piano lessons and sang in a choir all thru elementary school. So yes, music has always been a big part of our lives!
2. Did either of you play an instrument in school? If yes, what did you play? I played trumpet in band, and Chris played clarinet (although I don’t think he tells anyone that lol).
3. Where did you both grow up?
We both grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, a city of 800,000 people, in the middle of the prairies. We lived 5 minutes apart and our dads worked together, but we never met until years later!
4. How did you meet?
We met when we both auditioned to be part of a worship group that was traveling around Canada doing city wide worship nights. We toured together leading worship for 2 years. I think God was preparing us for the future!
5. How do you juggle your relationship, your kids, and career? It is a big juggling act, and sometimes days go smoothly and sometimes they don’t! We have carved out work time and family time as well as a date night every week. Having those boundaries helps a lot!
6. Do your kids go on tour with you? If they do, do they like meeting new people?
Tour life is our normal, and our boys normal. They don’t know anything else because we’ve taken them on the road since they were both 6 weeks old. We bought a small bus that has 6 bunk beds in it, so we make life on the road feel as similar to life at home, as possible. We don’t bring a nanny along, we ask for each concert venue to provide childcare so the boys are constantly meeting new people and they seem to love it. I hang out with them all day until showtime, and then someone comes to hang out with them while we play. The truth is as long as we’re together we’re always home so it just works!
FEAT URED
7. You dance in your videos, have you always like to dance? I love dancing around the house and singing my heart out. My boys usually join in on the drum kit. Every days a party!
8. What advice would you give kids in Middle School? Don’t worry. It will all work out. You are amazing and what makes you amazing is your uniqueness. God make you you and your worth comes from his love not your gifts and talents.

Wow, I thought! That is awful. I have no idea who Carly is, but I would hate to walk into this room and see such a hateful message. I sat quietly for a couple of minutes, but as the final girl added her name to the list, my blood was boiling and I had to take a stand for this Carly!
NOT A
I quickly walked up to the chalkboard, grabbed a piece of chalk and wrote, the WE LIKE CARLY CLUB! Then I put my name underneath it in big, bold letters and returned to my seat. A minute or two later, a curly haired Carly entered the room-I watched her face turn a shade of red as she read the board. Then she looked at what I’d written and the sadness was wiped away. She looked around the room and smiled at me when our eyes met.
BUDDY BULLY! by Tauja Catchings

nfortunately, bullying and school years seem to go hand in hand. Pretty much everyone has been touched by the bullying bug in some degree. Here’s my story! Our family moved around quite a bit, so being the new kid at school was a role I knew really well. We’d lived pretty much all over the place-born in New Jersey and we lived in Milwaukee, Texas, California and Italy! My family moved to a Chicago suburb the heading into my 8th grade school year. This meant that I would be starting yet another new school. Aptakisic Junior High School in Buffalo Grove. On one of my first days of school, I entered my classroom only to find a group of girls laughing and writing on the chalkboard. I found my seat and was waiting for class to begin. As I looked up, I saw that the group of girls seemed to grow and whatever they were writing on the board was growing too. Finally I saw what they’d written-in big bold letters-The We Hate Carly Club!

January/February 2019
After class, Carly and I officially met. She thanked me for taking a stand without even knowing anything about her or why the other girls had targeted her. That was over 25 years ago and we’ve been the very bestest of friends ever since that day. A simple act of kindness, being brave when others are being mean, can make all the difference in the world. We all have a voice. Make sure you use it for good! Be a buddy, not a bully!

S POT LIGHT T W EE N ON THE COVER: James
The color purple and Cathedral High School senior basketball standout James Franklin will forever be linked. Purple is the international color that represents epilepsy awareness and Franklin along with 50 million people around the world that have epilepsy, which makes it the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages according to the Epilepsy Foundation. If you don’t know anything about epilepsy just imagine having an unpredictable seizure, anytime day or night. However, just because Franklin has epilepsy, he doesn’t let that stop him from playing the game that he loves and has been playing since he was three years old. “I didn’t want to be labeled as a quitter because of my epilepsy,” Franklin said, “but what inspired me to keep playing basketball was I wanted to prove to people that you can overcome tough things in life and also I wanted to be looked at as an inspirational person who others that suffer can look up to.” Franklin was diagnosed with epilepsy at an early age. As he grew up with the traumatizing diagnosis, he noticed how hard it was to deal with, especially when it came to his school work. “It was stressful because I never knew when I would have a seizure, and with the memory loss, school work was hard to keep up with.”, he said. Surrounded by the love and support of his mother Tamkia and his father James Sr., these obstacles haven’t stopped him from living life to the fullest. “On the good side though, I knew that I had to have a strong mindset and think positive so it would not let me down. Just thinking about it, I would say I am a very strong, confident and a person that likes to lead.” Franklin said. Although he has this positive outlook on life, there are some situations that are unexpected and challenging to deal with.

FEAT URED During this past season, there was a terrible incident that happened when Franklin’s team was visiting another school playing a basketball game. While he was at the free throw line, a fan from the opposing school seemed to be mocking his condition by laying on the floor of the student cheering section and flipping around as if he was having a seizure. James was so focused on the game and making the free throw, he didn’t notice what was going on in the crowd. “I didn’t see him on the floor flipping around because I have no peripheral vision but after the game, I did see a video that someone sent me that was posted on Twitter.” After viewing the video, Franklin was surprised. “I was kinda shocked because I never knew somebody would take pride in acting out a disorder that many people have. The next day it really hit me and I was very angry to the point where I cried at home and cried while I was in the game that I had a couple of hours later. I was also thinking about depression.” This could have been the ending to a very sad story however Franklin could not have imagined how his courage inspired the community. A week later, his team visited the defending state champion Warren Central Warriors and played in what was advertised as the Epilepsy Awareness game. The gymnasium was packed and television cameras were everywhere. Before the game started, Franklin and his family were presented with a check of money that students from Warren Central had raised to show their support for James. As he walked to center court with his teammates, everyone cheered. On this night Franklin’s team played in new purple uniforms. What a difference a week can make. Going from anger and tears to educating and inspiring everyone. The senior who plans to continue playing basketball and study meteorology in college has put a spotlight on epilepsy awareness and for that, he is a leader.

DEAR FUTURE ME
Dear Future Self, I hate it when they treat me this way. I don’t need counseling and I don’t need everyone always trying to fix me! I want to be normal and I want people to leave me alone. I just want a break. I want to be able to say that I did this all on my own. I want to be able to say that I fixed ME. I bet that you, my future self, probably will never even talk to these people in my class again. I mean, they don’t even like me anyways right? I -Past You but part of me also wants to know if things are need to be strong, going to get better. Please write back! -Past You
DEAR PAST ME Dear Past Self, I wish that you could see your life through my perspective sometimes. I remember when I was you, back in middle school. There were a lot of hard days and a lot of mean things that have been done to you. I also remember when you used to do that to others because of the way you were treated. Well, here I am, your future self and I want you to know that it is okay now. The same people you pushed away stuck with you and decided that you were loved. I want you to know that in the end, you are still standing and you can let things go now. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t act like you have it all together because you don’t. The faster that you figure that out, the quicker you will be like me! -Future You

Bullying St ruggles Why am I gett ing bullied! I never look forward to school anymore. I don’t want to go. Every time I walk into my chemistry class I get bullied by my teacher about my car accident. I always hear you are a bad driver, watch out for her, and don’t ride with her. I am already traumatized from getting hit by another car and now I am getting bullied because of it. My teacher acts like it is a joke when it is not. It is not funny. I can’t take it anymore. I am not a bad driver. I didn’t mean for that accident to happen. My friends are trying to stop it from happening because they know how it’s affecting me but it’s not helping. It keeps on getting worse. I just want it to stop. Now other people think it is funny to come up to me and say something to me about it but they dont realize that it is not okay. They don't realize that I was crying hysterically and shaking after my accident. I didn't know where I was because I was on a road that I hadn't been on before. I didn't want to drive after it happen and when I got behind the wheel again I was so scared. They just think it is funny to bully me about it when they don't realize how much this accident has affected me. I walk into class and it starts. I have to hear it all throughout class. I just sit there and get so upset. I don't know what to do. I don't know how to handle this. I am just ready for summer so I don't have to deal with this teacher anymore. I can't handle it and I am tired of constantly getting reminded of it everyday when I already remember it when I get in my car or see the damage. My teacher doing this is not helping at all. My teacher doesn't realize the pain they are causing and I mentally can't handle it anymore. I need my teacher to shut up and leave me alone.

WORDS Words can be complicated, and extraordinarily vast in definitions. Everybody has their own understanding of words, and everyone feels different about them. Things like music can affect people in so many different ways, because people all feel the words in their own way, that no one else could understand. Unfortunately, it’s the same variation of meanings that can end up as misinterpreted, or have unintentional consequences. For example, a lot of times cyber bullying is unintentional. Cyber bullying is awful enough because people can say malicious things, and usually anonymously, so they hardly get punished for it. There are some cases though, where the culprits simply blew a joke out of proportion. Sometimes a threat can start out as all in good fun, but it’s difficult to convey exactly what you mean over the internet. It’s just the words, and the actual intentions behind any line of text could be up for debate. A lot of people don’t see how cyber bullying can be harmful; it’s hard to because it’s usually multiple different scenarios at the same time. If you get bombarded with rude comments, insults and mean jokes, a lot of the time by people that could be anyone, not only do you start to believe them, it can leave you paranoid. Also, something that is the funniest thing in the world to you could be offensive or even threatening to another person. Saying something for shock factor, especially on an anonymous app isn’t always the best idea. There’s unnecessary issues that come with taunting people anonymously. Chances are there’s other people doing the same thing, which only multiplies the issue. I love a good joke as much as anyone, but wouldn’t it be easier to say it in person? There are some things that need to stay offline.

OVERCOMIN G ST RUGLES WITH Being Bullied Why do people bully? Is it because they are sad, mad or something has happened in their life? Some people bully because they believe it’s fun, but what they don’t understand is that there are different kinds of fun; mean fun and normal fun. People get bullied in different ways: physical bullying, cyberbullying, social bullying, and verbal bullying. My experience with bullying... I have been bullied before when I was on a school bus sitting with my friend. We were just talking when out of nowhere a fourth grader behind us start cursing at us. This happened when I was in 2nd grade and continued off and on for my entire year riding the bus, but told myself often that I didn’t care and I tried ignoring him. Towards the end of the of the year I realized that he was being bullied socially. I only realized this after my class was visited by MMA Champion Chris Lytle, who came and talked with my class. The next day I decided to tell the bus driver of whom said to me, ”stop being so scared”. Honestly at that point I was not scared I just wanted the kid to stop already. When I realized the bus driver was not going to help I went on a journey to advocate for others like me.
It’s time to stand up! I learned that some victims can’t stand up for themselves, either because they are too afraid or they just don’t want to do it. So I took it upon myself to teach them by telling them, ”Look, bullies will not stop until you stand up to them or tell a Parent or teacher. If you don’t then you’re going to feel afraid and bad everyday. Tell someone now if you are getting bullied. It’s worth it.” After advocating for friends I decided one day I would like to start writing a book about what it’s like being bullied and how to stop it. It’s time to stop... all bullies need to stop bullying because it can severely impact people’s lives. Victims have turned to even hurting themselves because of this continued abuse. I refuse to give up and give power to those who are mean or attempt to bully me. And I promised myself in second grade that I will no longer stand by and let others be abused. As long as I have courage, know how to stay safe, and look out for others I know I’m doing my part. Doing my God-given duty as an Anti-bullying advocate for fellow student. Stay strong!

Counselor’s Corner Do you know who you are? Are you walking in your purpose? These questions ring loudly in the ears of many young teens who are suffering with social media overload and the pressures of their peers. Teens who feel like they will never be “enough”. Often, therapists have the unique opportunity to help various young teens learn the true essence of self-awareness, wherein they create thoughtful reflections that cultivate a deep level of insight and intimacy with one’s self. While teaching the art of self-reflection, interesting phenomena tend to surface in reference to how girls view their sense of “self.” Usually, young teens have learned to identify themselves with what they want to do for a living, what they have been through in life and/or how someone else defines them. But none of these are accurate. What makes it even more difficult to identify your authentic self is the way society tends to position teens. It is no longer okay to be ordinary. Young teens are overly concerned with weight, fashion and clothes, the latest technology, looking younger and having money. As Brené Brown describes, we are living in a culture where the biggest fear is being vulnerable because it produces guilt and shame. This, in turn, causes us to avoid our true, natural selves. Missing out on the many lessons vulnerability has to teach, teens go through life believing that in order to be okay, they have to have more, do more and be more. In doing so, we impede any personal growth opportunities that further oppress our true identities and what we were created to do. These are the lessons that lead to your ability to embrace who you are and walk in your purpose: Ego vs. t he uncondit ional self - The ego’s main job is to protect you from perceived dangers. The ego allows space for you to remain subconsciously committed to the fears derived from childhood or adult traumas. The unconditional self allows you to surrender to all of those things you believe make you who you are. The unconditional self is pure at heart and comes without any preconceived ideas of what it should or should not be. Fear vs. fait h - Fear’s primary purpose is to prevent you from doing the very things you were purposed to do. Yes, some fears are normal, but those that debilitate you and cause excessive worry or dependency are not healthy for the “self.” Faith, which is not just a religious term, is having assurance without knowing what the outcome will be. Try walking in faith, not fear, for one entire day, combating any fears that arrive. Observe how much easier situations are to conquer.
ST RICT LY T WEENS
Opposit ion vs. oppor t unity - This one is difficult, especially if you are used to seeing the world from a distorted lens because of life’s experiences. In every situation you encounter, you are faced with two choices: to view it from an oppositional standpoint or to recognize the opportunity it provides. What allows you to differentiate between the two is perception. Emot ionally s t unted vs. vulnerability - You are emotionally the same age that you were when you encountered any type of trauma in your life. As a result of that emotional stunt, you avoid and are unaware of the lessons your emotions have to teach you. You fear or doubt your emotions because they have never been allowed to be expressed safely and non-judgmentally. You fear your emotions because of your false perception that being emotional causes you to lose control. When you are unhealthy emotionally, it is difficult not to have black-and-white, distorted thinking patterns. The reality is that life’s most important lessons come from your ability to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is a gateway to strength and deeper levels of understanding the true you. Condit ional vs. uncondit ional love - Conditional love prevents you from understanding that love is not something you must earn or win. You deserve love no matter who you are or where you are in life. You cannot create self-awareness if you fail to accept and love yourself without conditions. Teens must learn to embrace themselves as sacred in order to understand and live with intention and purpose.

Anxiety
There are many ways to cope with anxiety but its not as easy as it seems. Just look at other people with anxiety it's hard for them to cope. Here’s 5 ways to cope with anxiety. 1. RELAX x ATION Slow and even your heart rate Slow deep breathing Mind is at peace 2. VISUALIZATION Inhale for 4 seconds Hold for 4 seconds Now exhale for 8 seconds 3. MEDITATION Start by making yourself as comfortable as possible. Close your eyes and relax your breathing so that it’s flowing naturally. Next, focus your attention on the movements of your chest and stom ach as you’re breathing. Once you are aware of your attention wandering, bring it back to your breathing. Continue to let your mind wander as you breathe by using a mantra to keep your breathing natural
4. THE
AWARE METHOD
Accept the anxiety – Accept the anxious thoughts and feelings as natural. Fo-
cus on feeling anxiety without becoming annoyed or frustrated with yourself. Greet it by saying “hello” out loud or to yourself when the anxiety appears. Challenge yourself to be with the experience, not fight it. If you resist the anxiety you’re essentially prolonging the unpleasantness of it. Instead, you should just flow with it. Watch your anxiety – Look at it objectively, without judgment, and rate it on a zero to ten scale. Record the scores and see how your anxiety goes up and down. The more you can separate yourself from the experience, the more you can just watch it. Dissociate your basic self from the anxiety; be in the anxiety state, but not of it. Act with your anxiety – Normalize the situation and function with it. Slow things down if you have to, but keep going and breathe slowly and normally. Repeat as much as possible – Continue to work on accepting your anxiety, watch it, and act with it until it goes down to a comfortable level. Expect the best – Anticipate that you're worried thoughts and fears won’t happen, because they rarely ever do. Expect that you will accomplish your goal, and if you experience anxiety along the way remember to accept, watch, and act with it. Don’t be surprised the next time you have anxiety but rather surprise yourself with how you handle it. Being aware of future anxiety will help place you in a better position to accept it when it comes again.

DIAPHRAa GMATIC BREATHING
You can also manage your anxiety with this intentional breathing technique. Most people aren’t aware that deep breathing actually makes use of the body’s built-in natural relaxation response, which occurs when we exhale. You can use a deep diaphragmatic breathing technique to reduce your anxiety with deep breaths. This method uses a 3-3-5 breathing pattern:
.. .
Inhale for 3 seconds Hold for 3 seconds Exhale for 5 seconds
Make sure to breathe slowly and evenly with your mouth closed. Take notice of what you’re feeling throughout your body while exhaling; your muscles might feel warm and begin to feel light or heavy. Try and let yourself enjoy whatever sensations you’re experiencing. Repeat the diaphragmatic breathing exercise until you feel relaxed.

THE KNOW HOW
Parent’s Corner What is Bullying? You ask ten parents what bullying is; you will more than likely get ten different answers. According to stopbullying.gov, bullying is the unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. When I was school aged the bully was the big kid the lived at the end of the street that picked on everyone. As society has changed, parents must also come to grips that bullies and bullying have changed. The four most common types of bullying are verbal, physical, relational and cyber. When a child says to another child, "You're, really dumb, and so is your sister," that's verbal bullying. We as parents must teach our children about respect. Through our behavior, we can reinforce how others should be treated. Hitting, kicking, pushing and touching in inappropriate ways is physical bullying. Children typically don’t tell their parents when this happens. Watch for warning signs like unexplained cuts, scratches, bruises or missing and/or damaged clothes. If you think your child is being physically bullied start a casual conversation to allow them to open up and talk about it. In school being a part of a club or sports team can be fun. It also can be quite stressful especially if someone tries to prevent another student from joining. This is known as relational bullying and parents should watch for mood changes and a shift toward them being alone more than usual. Make it a nightly routine to talk with your children about how their day went at school which can open the lines of communication. These days just about every child has a smartphone; however, using it to harass and embarrass other students is cyberbullying. Signs that parents should look for include noticing if your child spends more time online but appears to be sad afterward. Report cyberbullying to the school and perhaps your internet service provider. If it escalates to include threats, contact the police.

Tips and Tricks... Have you ever had that problem where you need to do something or you want to do something that doesn’t take a lot of time. Well here are some ideas. Did you jus t get a cat and you don’t have a place for it to sleep? Well you can make t his simple house. Find a box, put a T-shirt over it. Have the head hole face up in the opening of the box. Tuck the arm holes in so they don’t stick out. If you want your cat to have cushioning you can put pillows or blankets in it. Now, for t he dog people you can make an adorable collar out of an old plaid shir t. Take the plaid shirt you don’t wear anymore. Cut the collar off the shirt. If you cut the right part there should be a button to button then put the collar onto your dog. No sew pillow cases are awesome because you don’t need to sew. Take an old blanket or some fabric and put the pillow you are using over it. You need two pieces of fabric. Use a sharpie to trace the pillow you want to be about an inch away from the pillow. Cut the line you made. Now what you want to do is cut in about an inch every half inch. Put the pillow on one piece of fabric, put the other piece of fabric on the pillow. Start tying every loose piece of fabric to the other side of loose fabric. Your glasses are broke and you don’t want to buy new ones. Use floss! The screw that was in your glasses fell off so now you have a hole were that screw was. Take the floss and put it threw that hole. This will be easier if you use a sewing needle. Tie the floss and cut off the excess floss. Are you t ired of tying your shoes every t ime you put t hem on? Take your laces out of your tennis shoes. Find some zip-ties and put them where your shoelaces go. Put your foot in the shoe and adjust the zip ties until you are able to slip them on and off with ease. Remember that all tips might not work. For example: removing dog or cat hair and lint with slime. This might not work because the slime will get stuck to your clothes or any type of cloth if it is even somewhat sticky. 56

In English class, reading some of the material can be very helpful or difficult and hard to follow. Annotate and find phrases and words that make the readings easier to comprehend. Social studies is mostly memory so using those old flashcards is always a good idea. Look for keywords that can help you understand. Now here are 5 quick t ips on your study area at home:

Make sure your workspace is clean and organized. Make sure you have good lighting. Limit your time on technology. Figure out what works for you. Just because your friends study a certain way does not mean that it will work for you. Put your phone on silent and also add timers on your apps so they won’t distract you with the rings and bell.

THE KNOW HOW
Heal t h & W e ll n e s s What Is Epilepsy and What to do if your friend is having a seizure. This can be a scary word, but what does it mean? Epilepsy is a disease where a person has recurrent seizures. It is not something you can catch from people. If you have one seizure, it does not necessarily mean you have Epilepsy. People who have epilepsy are not weird or different, they can be just like you. In fact, you may know someone with epilepsy and be completely unaware they have it. 1% of all children will experience a seizure by their teen years.
What is a seizure? Your brain works by sending out electrical signals. When something goes wrong with this signaling, your brain messaging system can have continuous electrical activity, causing a seizure. Some seizures can be caused by medication when taken improperly, severe illness, or genetic issues. There are a number of different types of seizures, all of which can look very different. Some seizures make people stare blankly into space. Some cause people to fall to the ground and their arms and legs to shake. Others will just cause one part of your body to shake. Seizures can be triggered by bright, rapidly flashing lights. TV, Video games, and computers are safe and do not cause seizures. We can diagnose seizures by a test called Electroencephologram, or EEG. This test uses stickers placed on the head to watch the electrical activity of the brain.

THE KNOW HOW
It is important to understand how to help someone if you see them having a seizure. Do not try to hold them to stop the shaking, as you may hurt yourself or them. Look at the time so you can keep track of the duration of the seizure. If they are lying down, roll them to their side. Call for help (dial 911). Do not put anything in their mouth. Check to see if they have a medical bracelet or necklace.
How do you treat it? There are many medications today to help manage epileptic seizures. They do not cure the seizure disorder, but they can allow most kids who have them to live a normal life. Medical diagnoses can be scary, but when you know something about them you can be more understanding of the people around you. I hope this made seizures and epilepsy less frightening. If you have other questions about this or other issues, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor. We are here to help explain things and answer questions.
