Peace Dollar

The Peace dollar is an U. S. dollar coin that was produced for circulation from 1921 to 1928, as well as in 1934 and 1935, and will be reintroduced in 2021. The coin, developed by Anthony de Francisci, was the conclusion of a competition to discover designs that represented peace. The obverse features the Goddess of Liberty's head and neck in profile, while the reverse depicts a bald eagle at rest clutching an olive branch with the word "Peace." This was the final silver dollar coin produced for circulation in the U.s. Coin collectors lobbied the U.S. Mint to create a coin commemorating the peace after World War I. The Pittman Act of 1918 ordered the US Mint to hammer millions of silver dollars, which it began doing in 1921 using the Morgan dollar pattern.

Design History

De Francisci was the younger of the contestants at 34 years old, and he also had the minimum expertise in the field of coin design. Unlike the majority of the others, de Francisci's sole involvement had been the translation of designs for the 1920 Maine commemorative half dollar to the final work. De Francisci had exercised little judgement in that endeavour, and later stated, "I do not regard it very positively."

Teresa Cafarelli was born Teresa de Francisci in Naples, Italy. She was five years old when she struck a pose for the Statue of Liberty. Later, she wrote to her brother Rocco about the statue and how she had fallen in love with it.
