EDITOR’S NOTE AFTERMATH It finally happened. The 2016 presidential election—as if such a sprawling, emotionally harrowing experience can be shorthanded in three words—finally reached its gotterdammerung Jan. 20 on the rainy streets of Washington, D.C. Donald Trump is president of the United States. Now we all have to figure out what that really means.

Among the most pressing concerns for many Americans— particularly in Idaho—is the fate of the Affordable Care Act. Congress and Trump are both hell bent on scrapping the signature law of former-President Barack Obama, but while the rhetoric has been plentiful, there has been a paucity of detail on what might replace it.

That doesn’t sit well with many of the more than 100,000 Idahoans (to date) who have secured health insurance through the ACA. Should federal subsidies to offset the cost of insurance go away, it would affect up to 87 percent of Idahoans who signed up for insurance through the state exchange Your Health Idaho. If the law is scrapped in its entirety, the number of uninsured people in Idaho could swell to 366,000, according to some estimates.

On Page 6, Boise Weekly freelancer Sami Edge took the temperature of Idaho’s mood ahead of the possible dismantling of the ACA, including checking in with the insurance exchange, Your Health Idaho enrollees who are worried they’ll lose coverage, and those who think less government involvement in health care is to be preferred.

Rasmusson, a semi-regular BW contributor and editor-in-chief of the Sandpoint Reader weekly newspaper in northern Idaho, found a measure of division in D.C., but also earnest attempts at unity.

MAIL A PRIMER FOR PORTLANDERS Dear Editor, I read another article about how Boise may be the new Portland, so I figured this is a good time to let incoming Portlanders know about some of the most important things about moving to Boise.

1. We really like bikes, but we haven’t figured out the bike thing very well yet. As pedestrians, we’re not very good at keeping to one side on shared bike/walk spaces, and we have a really hard time controlling our dogs around bikes. As motorists, most of us are terrible at sharing space with bikes.

2. We stole your “Keep Portland Weird” thing, but whatever, you guys stole it from Austin, and presumably Missoula or Pittsburgh or somebody is going to steal it from us as soon as we’re cool enough.

3. Weed is still illegal here. And not in the winkwink “you might get a ticket” kind of way, like in the “you will straight up go to jail” kind of way.

4. Those naked dancing bars you have in Portland?

We do not have those.

5. The doughnut place is called Guru, and the lines aren’t as bad as Voodoo.

No sweet pink boxes, but they did make a bird’s nest doughnut that was straight amazing.

6. Smoking is still allowed. Not in Boise proper, but in Garden City in the middle of Boise, as well as most of the towns in the rest of the Treasure Valley. We know. It’s weird for us, too.

7. There are two Saturday markets, they’re two blocks away from each other, the

one with the vegetables is in the parking lot next to Hotel 43.

8. There is an amazing number of natural hot springs within two hours of Boise. You should really go to them as often as you can.

9. We don’t have a professional sports team, but Broncos fans are every bit as dedicated as Blazers or Timbers fans.

10. We’re sorry if somebody gets all over you about the pronunciation thing. “It’s Boy-see, not Boy-zee.” We’ve heard that these pronunciation police exist, but we have never met them. Apparently they lurk in shadows awaiting the opportunity to correct out-of-towners.

LIBERALLY LIBERAL Dear Editor, Hi, I just wanted to voice my opinion of your articles, polls and comics. Every time I have opened the Boise Weekly lately there seems to be a consistent bashing of our President-elect/President Donald Trump somewhere in your paper. As an Idahoan who chose to move to this state to get away from progressive liberalism (i.e., Portland, Las Vegas), it would be nice to see some more gracious articles on the guy or say nothing at all. Like CNN, MSNBC and NPR, the Boise Weekly seems to be as biased as they are. Remember you are in Idaho and more of your customer base would appreciate at least a few more conservative articles. REPLACING OBAMACARE Dear Editor, With the Republican Congress bent on depriving 22 million Americans of medical insurance, this is a great time to provide our own, totally free and totally effective health insurance—a plant-based diet.

A study with 131,000 participants, in last year’s Internal Medicine found that consumption of animal protein is associated with higher risk of death. A couple dozen other massive studies in the past four decades had similar findings. None reached opposite conclusions.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 1.4 million, or 68 percent, of identified U.S. deaths are attributed to heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, linked conclusively with consumption of animal products.

Cost of medical care was estimated by the NIH at $3 trillion in 2014, or $24,000 per household, and rising at 6.5 percent annually—nearly four times the rate of inflation. Incredibly, this amount rivals our national budget and represents 17.5 percent of our gross domestic product. Even so, it does not include the costs of lost productivity, disability and premature death.

We have little control over the national cost of medical care. But, each of us has a great deal of control over our household’s $24,000 share every time we visit the grocery store.

stands apart. The exchange has the highest per capita enrollment in the nation and is on track to reach record participation for 2017 with more than 100,000 enrollees. While most state exchanges are losing providers in the coming year, Your Health Idaho has more providers and more options in 2017 than in previous years.

In a 2016 analysis, health care consulting group Leavitt Partners highlighted Your Health Idaho as “lean” and “efficient” among state

would struggle following a repeal of the ACA. For years, Booth said he got by without health insurance, counting himself lucky that he never had a serious accident on his bike. He has insurance for the first time under Obamacare.

“As it is, it’s beneficial to pay into the system,” Booth said. “It’s kind of painful to pay, but at least if I get hit by a car I have a little bit of coverage.”

If his premiums go up or his tax credit gets removed, Booth said he won’t be able to swing the payments.

“It’ll be like a car payment—and I can’t even afford a car,” he said.

Wayne Hoffman, president of conservative think tank the Idaho Freedom Foundation, thinks consumers would be better off with less government control of insurance.

“Instead of saving up money and being able to afford to purchase health care, [consumers are] spending every month on an insurance product that they can’t use,” said Hoffman. “Ultimately, the conversation should be about how to provide health care that’s low cost, accessible and patient- driven.”

People like Jill Mason think the government could do more.

Mason is one of an estimated 78,000 Idahoans who fall in the so-called Medicaid “coverage gap.” She doesn’t make enough money to qualify for Obamacare, but also doesn’t qualify for Medicaid. An expansion of Medicaid would close the gap, but Idaho remains one of 19 states that have opted not to do so.

Mason tries to avoid going to the doctor, but couldn’t help it when she hurt her knee last June. The doctor wanted to take X-rays but Mason declined, due to the cost. The trip still cost her nearly $200.

“They say that the uninsured are disinclined to seek treatment, and that’s why,” Mason said. “It’s too expensive.”

Jim Dobbins, who recently renewed his Your Health Idaho coverage despite uncertainty about its future, likens Obamacare to a piece of public infrastructure.

“As an able bodied male, [insurance] costs me more now, but I get that. We’re all in this together,” he said. “It’s like roads: We can all be resentful that we pay for roads that we don’t use, but the fact that we have these roads is what makes the economy run.”

While Donald J. Trump continues his “running war” with the national news media over attendance numbers at his Jan. 20 inauguration as the 45th president of the United States, it is beyond dispute that nearly 500,000 people took to the streets of Washington, D.C. over the weekend to protest the billionaire’s election.

Part of similar gatherings that numbered in the millions around the world, demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans in support of protections for religious, racial, sexual identity and gender expressions—as well as women’s health and reproductive rights.

That said, it was also a weekend of unexpected grace—for those who looked for it.

“I really don’t think the divide [between conservatives and liberals] is as bad as the media makes it out to be,” said Travis Thompson, a Sandpoint native and Trump supporter who helped organize the D.C.-bound motorcycle group 2 Million Bikers for Trump.

Thompson said he arrived at the conclusion after spending some time at Trump’s inaugural and then the Women’s March on Washington.

“They were conversations where both people could discuss different ideas and still leave feeling [like they were] better off,” he said.

Thompson found an unexpected ally in Van Jones, left-leaning CNN political commentator and Women’s March speaker, who warned of the danger in despising ideological opponents.

“Liberals and progressives, we’ve got to be better liberals and progressives,” he said. “I’m tired of us—and I’ve been guilty of it—putting down red state voters and saying that they’re all stupid and they’re all uneducated.”

Other speakers at the Women’s March struck less harmonious notes. Madonna said she “had thought a lot about blowing up the White House,” a comment she later walked back and claimed was taken out of context.

Jones and Madonna were just two of many Women’s March speakers, which included feminist luminaries like Gloria Steinem alongside Hollywood and music superstars like Scarlett Johansson and Alicia Keys. The crowd grew impatient as the rally stretched an hour past the scheduled march time. Cold, weary of standing and in many cases unable 7 to access bathrooms, the crowd began chanting, “March! March! March!”

As congressional Republicans race to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, tens of thousands of Idahoans remain unsure about what could happen to their own insurance coverage and Your Health Idaho—touted as one of the most efficient health care exchanges in the country.

The ACA, a.k.a. Obamacare, still requires Americans to sign up for health insurance and offers federal subsidies to offset costs. Since the law passed in 2010, nearly 20 million Americans have secured health coverage. In Idaho, to date, more than 100,000 people are insured through the ACA. President Donald Trump and the Republican-dominated Congress have all promised to “repeal and replace” Obamacare as soon as possible, but any hasty repeal without a replacement could be costly. The Washington, D.C.-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates the number of uninsured Idahoans could double to 366,000 by 2019.

Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office estimates a repeal could double by 2026.

Your Health Idaho Executive Director Pat Kelly said 87 percent of residents enrolled through Your Health Idaho currently receive a tax credit, but if Obamacare is fully repealed without a replacement, that assistance could disappear, further limiting access to health insurance.

Uncertainty over the fate of the ACA was reflected in a recent Boise State University survey, which showed approximately 70 percent of respondents said health care should be a chief concern for the Idaho Legislature.

More than half said they favored keeping the state health insurance exchange, Your Health Idaho.

“What’s going to happen to the people who all of a sudden don’t have health care?” asked Christine Simon, an Idahoan in favor of Obamacare.

“Three million Americans feel like they’re not being represented if it gets repealed.”

On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order that would make it easier to roll back parts of the ACA—including penalties for Americans who don’t purchase insurance. The deadline to sign up for a 2017 insurance plans is Tuesday, Jan. 31.

exchanges. The analysts noted Your Health Idaho operates on a $9 million budget, compared to the $63 million median cost of other exchanges.

Kelly said “change is coming,” but added he’s focused on serving Idahoans until that change— whatever it might be—needs to be made.

“We remain focused on the business at hand,” he said. “If any changes are implemented, we will work closely with the governor’s office and other Idaho policymakers to determine how best to serve Idahoans.”

When the marching finally began, the crowd movement turned out to be more of a shuffle, but organizers said they had their goal even before the walking began.

Crowds eventually gathered on the Ellipse near the southernmost gate of the White House, where many chose to leave their signs demanding equal rights and protections under the law. According to NBC News, more than 200 anti-Trump protesters were arrested Jan. 20 following incidents of vandalism and occasional clashes with police around D.C. By contrast, not a single arrest was reported related to the Women’s March on Washington.

Overall, the inauguration weekend festivities remained an exhilarating experience for Thompson, a chance to enjoy a moment he believes represents a positive cultural shift. He and his companions met an elderly woman who had been separated from her group.

“She basically became our adopted friend for the day,” he said.

As an organizer for a large, pro-Trump biker group, he also received attention from major media outlets, including NBC News, ABC News, People Magazine and Agence France-Presse.

Initially hesitant about the reporters’ intentions, Thompson said he ultimately followed through with interviews for each organization.

That said, Thompson said he faced initial suspicion when he attempted to engage the leaders of other pro-Trump biker groups.

“I’m just going to try and help everyone out, because for me, it’s all about the big picture,” he said.

It’s anyone’s guess whether America will achieve a renewed sense of unity that Thompson or Jones seek. With a historically unpopular president at the nation’s helm—Time magazine places Trump at a 40 percent approval rating, the lowest of any recent incoming president— pundits said it was easy to side with pessimists.

Jones, in his Women’s March speech, urged Americans to resist that impulse.

“This movement has an opportunity to stand up for the underdogs in the red states and the blue states, to stand up for the Muslims and the dreamers and the black folks, but also to stand up for coal miners who are going to be thrown under the bus by Donald Trump,” he said. “When it gets harder to love, let’s love harder.”

Nora Harren and Colette Raptosh looked at each other and smiled when Boise Weekly asked how many people might attend their Women’s March on Idaho.

“Wouldn’t it be great if we had several hundred?” said Harren.

“Can you imagine if there were a thousand people or more?” Raptosh said.

The Boise high-schoolers, who also organized a unity rally following the Nov. 8, 2016 general election, saw their dream of a good turnout come true on Jan. 21, when, by their count, the Women’s March on Idaho attracted nearly 7,000 attendees—making it one of the largest public demonstrations in recent Boise history.

“What’s next? We’ve already got some ideas, but right now we want those ideas and future events to grow on their own,” said Raptosh. “The march was just the starting point. Now, it’s about going out, getting involved and having more of a say about Idaho.”

WILD WEST LITERARY CONTESTS—Silver Creek Writers Residency and Storyfort at Treefort Music Fest 2017 have extended the deadline for the Wild West Literary Contests to Feb. 15.

Shortly after the November elections, Boise artist Kelly Knopp called President Donald Trump “a political cartoonist’s dream.”

It isn’t just Trump’s coiffure or mannerisms that have made him the darling of caricaturists: His rhetoric has instilled in many the thought he may not be a president for all Americans. However, artists have long worked in an ancient tradition of protest. Crafting Resistance, an exhibition featuring 20 artists from across North America, offers a broad view of how artists deal with social issues.

See works by Canadian pop protest artist Jesse Purcell, Mexican muralist Mazatl, and metalworker and ceramacist Cannupa Hanska Luger from New Mexico, tackling issues from environmental degradation, to consumer culture, political oppression and war.

The Pioneer Fire in 2016 burned more than 190,000 acres in the Boise National Forest and racked up almost a billion dollars in damage, making it the biggest fire in history on federal lands.

Among the casualties were trails and yurts maintained by the Idaho City Backcountry Yurt and Trail System. Leo Hennessy, non-motorized trails coordinator for Idaho Parks and Recreation, estimates rebuilding and repairing yurts and trails could cost more than $200,000—a huge hit to a program sustained by volunteers and profits from yurt rentals.

To help, Payette Brewing is hosting a fundraiser with auctions and reservation dibs for the 2016-2017 rental season, and donating 50 percent of beer sales to the yurt-and-trail-restoration fund.

DCI: A T. REX NAMED SUE Other than in movies and books, what we see of clade Dinosauria IRL is often just a few small fossil fragments—until now.

The Discovery Center of Idaho recently welcomed “A T. rex named Sue,” a traveling exhibit of the “largest, best-preserved and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found.”

At 13-feet tall and more than 40-feet long, Sue is a replica made of more than 250 “bones” cast from the original T. rex fossils found in 1990 in Faith, S.D. Purchased for $8.4 million by the Field Museum in Chicago, Sue has been traveling since 2000, bringing with her interactive activities and additional casts, which allow visitors an up-close experience.

Local band Lounge on Fire releases sinfully sexy debut album, Lips of Calypso

Husband and wife Ned Evett and Kim Philley are releasing the EP from their new-ish project.

BEN SCHULTZ Nathan Norton wrote some notes for his band’s debut album, Lips of Calypso (self-released, 2017), but he didn’t include them in the CD packaging. it may have been a wise move.

“Lips of Calypso is an ode to the human body as a hostage to the temptation of sin, particularly that of lust,” wrote Norton, frontman for local band Lounge on Fire. “Each track embodies the perspective of the sinner and their struggle with the burden created by this seduction. … The hedonism experienced by the sinner is further muddled by the notion of being nurtured by societal masculinity into a compulsory state of seeking fulfillment through sexual satisfaction, and the conflicting commandment administered by religious and academic pedagogy to abstain from such lasciviousness.”

That description, while accurate, sounds more appropriate for a dissertation than a dynamite soul-funk LP. Boasting seductive grooves, vibrant horns, full-bodied production by Jason Ringelstetter and motor-mouthed vocals from Norton, Lips of Calypso is sure to be one of this year’s best local releases.

Lounge on Fire will play a release show for Calypso at Neurolux on Saturday, Jan. 28, with psychedelic rock groups Marshall Poole and Thick Business opening.

According to Norton—who, in addition to singing and playing guitar, writes the lyrics for Lounge on Fire’s songs—the ambivalence towards sex and machismo in Calypso stems from his conflicted feelings over his East Texas upbringing.

“Southern Baptist was the culture in the area [where] I spent most of my formative years,” he explained. “I grew up under the threat of fire and brimstone for everything, and it was to a degree that I haven’t experienced anywhere else.”

Like the man in the album’s songs, Norton struggles to reconcile opposing forces in his psyche.

Lounge on Fire wants to inspire people to “come” together... in more ways than one.

“I feel like I’m torn between the guilt of my religious upbringing but also, on the other extreme of it, being among very sex-positive people. But being on the masculine side of that is almost a step in the other direction. … A lot of the lyrics of this album are really just trying to navigate that space of being a sexual creature—and a sexually deviant creature—but in this weird paradigm where I’m being pulled in all these different directions.”

Lounge on Fire’s music reflects this tension as well. On Calypso, Norton’s anxious, semi-rapped vocals work with and against the sensuousness of the riffs and rhythms. Norton drew inspiration for his singing style—which sounds at times like a cross between David Byrne and Rakim—from an unlikely source.

“I listened to a lot of gangsta rap as a child,” he said. “I’m not kidding. I listened to Coolio, I listened to Master P and Nappy Roots. … From an early age, I was just super-intrigued by rap, especially the ones that could really spit it out.”

Norton started playing music as a teenager, learning trumpet, French horn and, finally, guitar.

While attending the University of North Texas in Denton, he immersed himself in the college town’s freewheeling atmosphere.

“If you walk along any one of those streets on any given night, chances are you’re gonna find a party,” he said. “People will just be sitting out on the porch. And you’ll just walk up to them and be like, ‘Hey, what’s up, guys?’ And they’ll just be

like, ‘Come on in. Come hang with us.’”

After graduating in 2012, the company Norton worked for offered him a position in its Boise office. Although hesitant at first, he came to see moving to Idaho as a chance to “hit the reset button on my life.” He played bass briefly with local blues-rock group The Bare Bones (aka Limbosa) before starting Lounge on Fire in 2013 with bassist Josh Gilmore.

Lounge on Fire went through numerous personnel changes before settling on the current lineup of Norton, Gilmore, saxophone player Matt Patterson, trumpet player Seth Hoffman, trombone player Kevan Ash, keyboardist Alan Schwaderer and drummer Wade Ronsse. The group has played a bewildering range of events as well, including Treefort Music Fest, the Potato Drop, the Moscow Renaissance Fair and the Sands Regency Farmers’ Market in Reno, Nev. “That was a lot of weirdness and fun,” Norton said of the Reno gig. “I always feel strange when we play around all ages—kids especially—because the lyrics are not very family-friendly.”

Audiences can expect more weirdness and fun from Lounge on Fire in the future. In March, the band will play Treefort 2017 and collaborate with Idaho Dance Theatre as part of its Interface series.

Norton and company also have enough material for a second album and want to create a light display that audience members can control via mobile app during a live show.

Whatever Lounge on Fire does next—and whatever internal conflicts Norton may have— the ultimate goal remains simple.

“Right now, we’re just trying to make people fuck,” Norton said. “Come together. In so many different ways.”

The key to reaching new heights can be a strategic collaboration—as massive as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was, his “Hangover” feat.

Snoop Dogg gave the South Korean pop star a boost of cred (and simply confirmed the theory that Snoop Dogg might be the coolest guy in the world). Local singer-songwriter/ guitar virtuoso Ned Evett and his wife, singersongwriter Kim Philley, took it a step further, blending their romantic pairing with an artistic one, which resulted in Ruins (2016), the debut EP from their new-ish project, Music Box (facebook.com/musicboxboise). See this dynamic duo live at the release party for Ruins on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Record Exchange.

The party starts at 6 p.m. and, as always, is for all ages and free.

For people with Parkinson’s diseases, the smallest movement can be a big deal. Dance for Parkinson’s Idaho is a non-profit organization (part of the national Dance for PD program) started in 2016 by Ballet Idaho principal dancer Elizabeth Keller and taught by her and a roster of dancers who have been trained in the official Dance for PD method, which “allows people with Parkinson’s to experience the joys and benefits of dance while creatively addressing symptom-specific concerns related to balance, cognition, motor skill, depression and physical confidence.” Free classes are weekly, available in Eagle and Boise, and open to anyone with mobility issues. Plus, on alternating weeks, the musical accompaniment is live.

American Wrestlers, a.k.a. U.S.-based Scottish musician Gary McClure, is 21st century bedroom pop with a 20th century sound.

McClure’s self-released 2014 album American Wrestlers was straight-up DIY, with recording distortions and tinny treble from the Tascam recorder he used until it reportedly fell apart. McClure’s latest record, Goodbye Terrible Youth, (Fat Possom Records, Nov. 2016) is orders of magnitude more produced, but still chock full of synthpop, rootsy Americana and soul, which he will bring to Boise Friday, Jan. 26 in support of the sophomore release.

The sisters and their band, Shook Twins, are full of surprises, and each one is more rewarding than the last.

Born in Sandpoint and based in Portland, Ore., the sisters took the banjo-based acoustic indie sound so ubiquitous in the Northwest and made it something else. Nowhere is that clearer than on Shook Twins’ latest single, “Call Me Out” (Curlypinky Records, Aug. 2016). It’s a track teeming with banjo twang, rich vocals, stirring lyrics, rocking guitar and a bedrock of beats, but it’s as though all of the elements were dropped into a giant barrel, mixed with techniques usually employed by more experimental acts, and given a good (sorry not sorry) shake. It’s enticing, it’s addictive and like when the sisters sing, it’s a sweet surprise.

At mid-morning on a cold Saturday, the real stars of The Flicks were preparing for another journey into movie madness. Six high profile, Oscarnominated films would rotate through the Flicks’ four theaters that day, luring a steady queue of customers to the box office. Before the doors opened at noon, the kitchen staff slid the first of multiple pans of lasagna into the oven.

“It’s our biggest seller; that, and the baked brie. A lot of people even call each day just to see what soup we’re cooking up,” said Sydney Slighter, standing behind the counter ready to greet theater patrons. (For the record, a pot of pasta e fagioli was simmering on the stove).

“Sydney and I actually worked together at another movie theater before we came to The Flicks four years ago,” said Britney Cebada, sliding in behind the counter beside Slighter. “You’ll probably hear this from a lot of our colleagues today, but we really consider this our family.”

She was right. Both theater staff and volunteers repeated that statement all day, which could, in part, explain the overriding theme from the steady stream of moviegoers (occasionally growing to a tsunami) who walked through the doors: The Flicks experience transcends traditional moviegoing and, for many, it’s a personal relationship. The word “love” kept coming up.

“If you love movies, you love The Flicks,” said patron Joyce Mateo. “There are actually other

theaters closer to where we live, but look at us: We’re settled in with a glass of wine, and it’s just a lovely way to spend a winter day.”

Joyce and her husband, Luis, had each ordered a glass of Malbec and found a table not far from the fireplace, which had just roared to life.

“My grandfather was the administrator of the only movie theater in my small hometown in Puerto Rico,” Joyce said. “I went there every day after school. So, my love for the movies has been a big part of my life. I wanted to go to the movies today and Luis asked, ‘Where should we go?’ I said, ‘You don’t even have to ask.’ So, naturally we’re here at The Flicks. We’re going to see Manchester by the Sea. We heard it’s one of the best of the year” The Mateos were the first of many couples who would find a fireside table over the next several hours.

“Yes, this is definitely date night,” said Courtney Rush, glancing over at husband Jonathan.

“We have three daughters—[ages] 6, 4 and 6 months—and Jonathan’s mother is in town, so she’s babysitting. We’re going to see La La Land.

Is it as good as they say?” (I assured them it is.)

Michael and Suzanne Bergmann said, “All of our kids are out of the house, so every night is date night”; Quinn and Shirley Van Paepeghem “were just here last week to see La La Land,

saw the preview for Lion and had to come back tonight”; and Cathy Anderson and her son Evan “love The Flicks—especially this time of year.”

January is like an extended Christmas at The Flicks. While some of the current films have been screening since before the holiday season began, many are just now catching the public’s interest due to their coveted Oscar nominations.

“Sorry, I only have one more seat for the next showing,” ticket-seller Sam Wonacott told a crestfallen couple at the box office window. As he had on many previous occasions, however, he was quick to tell the couple about other screenings that might be of interest.

“I recommend movies to customers all the time, especially this time of year,” said Wonacott, a full-time Boise State University student who works most Saturday evenings as The Flicks’ man in the glass booth. Nearby, sat a stack of signs reading, “Next performance sold out,” just in case ticket sales reached capacity, which a number of showings did that day.

Meanwhile, lasagna, baked brie, popcorn, wine, beer and soda were flying across the counter as quickly as customers were streaming through the door.

“I’ll be here until midnight, cleaning up and getting ready for another day at The Flicks,” said 10-year employee Jessica Means. “But we love it, we really love it.”

SCREEN POWER PLAY Teasing themes of authority run amok in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events BW STAFF For millions of Americans, the past 18 months have been a “series of unfortunate events,” culminating in the inauguration of a deeply divisive president and a cultural mood of doom and gloom. By coincidence (maybe?) among the seemingly unending string of Netflix original releases is Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events—an eight episode series based on the widely popular young adult book series and 2004 Jim Carrey star vehicle of the same name.

This time starring Neil Patrick Harris as the unscrupulous Count Olaf, whose obsession with robbing the orphaned Baudelaire children of their alleged vast wealth, A Series of Unfortunate Events quietly dropped on Netflix earlier this month with its mix of gallows humor, stylized violence and—perfect for this season of discontent—cynical view of so-called “adult” authority figures.

A Boise Weekly panel sat down to parse the show with an eye toward unpacking how its singularly dim view of traditional power structures dovetails with the current social climate. (The conversation has been edited for space.)

ZACH HAGADONE: “We should start with our thoughts on the show itself. Is it any good?

I liked it, but it feels like Wes Anderson meeting Tim Burton for some kind of weird romp. … That’s just my thing, but another criticism I’ve read is some viewers were put off by the structure: every two episodes represents one storyline from the book series, so every two episodes you’re repeating this formula of ‘the kids are in trouble, they’re with a new guardian, the guardian gets snuffed or whatever.’ Some people found that disjointed, like they’re being jerked around. I felt like the disjointed feeling actually heightened the uncertainty and chaos being experienced by the characters. The kids are always up in the air so, as a viewer, you’re always up in the air.”

HARRISON BERRY: “That resonated with me, too. It’s this idea that somehow the adults are supposed to be the problem solvers, but they’re incapable of seeing the fact that every time those kids are rescued from the perils of Count Olaf they deliver the children right back into the hands of Count Olaf. That repetitiveness really speaks to the idea that we’re incapable of learning from our mistakes. The only thing that’s not stylized is the BOISE WEEKLY.COM

Everything around them is a bureaucratic satire.”

ZH: “If Netflix didn’t plan for A Series of Unfortunate Events to come out right now, they probably should have. That theme of the ‘bureaucratic satire’ and good-intentioned, innocent people being totally screwed and jacked around by a bunch of sinister authority figures fits pretty well with the current political mood.”

AMY ATKINS: “Or one idiot puppet master.

Somehow this narcissistic asshat is able to control everybody’s lives—change everything.”

ZH: “I know it’s totally unintentional, but you don’t have too look to far to draw a parallel between our current president and Count Olaf, who’s a shitty actor…”

AA: “Weird hair. Talks about himself all the

BEERGUZZLER WINTER WARMING ALES I’ve lived in Boise for more than 30 years and, while I remember colder temperatures, I can’t recall a time when we had so many days of clouds, snow and bone chilling cold. It’s time to break out a few bigger brews with enough octane to combat this dreary weather.

NORTH COAST OLD STOCK ALE, 2016, $3.50-$4.30 Weighing in at 11.8 percent alcohol by volume, the lightly sour malt aromas on this ambertinged pour are complemented by caramel, fig, a touch of leather and a light booziness. There’s a lot going on on the palate, where dark chocolate, toasted malt, vanilla and sweet sherry are backed by a pleasant bit of heat.

Very light hops come through on the finish.

SIERRA NEVADA BIGFOOT BARLEYWINESTYLE ALE, 2017, $2.50-$3 A thin, off-white head tops this chestnut-colored brew. The aromas are a mix of sweet caramel malt and resiny hops. At 9.6 abv, it’s on the lighter side of the barleywine style but what it lacks in heat, it makes up for in heady hops. The malt flavors are on the dry side, colored by a heavy hit of pine laced hops, along with spice and bitter sweet dark chocolate.

WOODLAND EMPIRE CHAPTER 3, BURNING BRIGHT ENGLISH-STYLE OLD ALE, $7-$8 The Boise brewery celebrates its third anniversary with this bomber of ebony colored ale topped by a thin, porous head.

Sweet malt and molasses aromas dominate, along with soft fruit and toffee.

This is an impeccably balanced winter warmer with creamy caramel playing against light hops.

Despite the 9 percent abv, there’s a nice bit of booze on the finish. This is an impressive effort by the home team.

Modern slavery and its link to ISIS, pornography and chocolate GEORGE PRENTICE

Academia wasn’t in Matthew Mason’s bloodline.

His dad sold insurance and his mother was a social worker. Mason and two of his siblings (he’s the oldest of four brothers), however, are academics. After considering a career in journalism, Mason found his calling in the past.

“My history classes were helping me better explain the world around me,” he said.

In anticipation of his visit to Boise on Thursday, Feb. 2, to speak at the Fettuccine Forum, Mason talked about how he spends much of his time chronicling the politics of slavery, both historic and modern.

What event or events dialed up your desire to be a historian?

I was at the University of Utah in the early ’90s. It was the era of the riots in Los Angeles, it was the era of the O.J. trial, and some of the history classes I was taking on early American history, exploring the origins of slavery in America, seemed to be 100 percent relevant when it came to the America we were all witnessing.

Isn’t it interesting that the debates from the O.J. era resurfaced in 2016 through two high-profile television shows?

Absolutely, and on top of all of that was the very contemporary debate about race during the 2016 political cycle.

I don’t think I’ve seen too many historians on picket lines or considered them to be activists.

A group I’m very much involved with, Historians Against Slavery, confronts contemporary slavery. Yes, there are a lot of great organizations working against slavery, and while we may not be on picket lines or out there rescuing victims, we can host gatherings where we bring scholars and activists together.

So what’s the secret sauce in trying to get people to care more?

It’s about caring about slavery in the context of things you already care about. Do you care about the West? Fair trade? Women’s rights?

The rights of workers? They’re all connected to slavery.

What behaviors might we change to make a significant difference?

Consumer boycotts work. Look at chocolate and how slave labor has been a part of that supply chain. Some brands were attached to child labor or slave labor in their cocoa production. A major consumer backlash forced those companies to reverse their course.

Is the connection between pornography and modern slavery as strong as ever?

The studies of those links are only beginning but, yes, pornography is driving the demand for sex trafficking.

How does the current shift of the political climate inform our nation’s activism, or lack thereof, on the issue of modern slavery?

Actually, it’s a bipartisan issue that a lot of people care about. There was a recent bill to fund anti-human trafficking efforts that passed through Congress and it was one of the very few bills that found support from both sides of the political aisle. There’s a strong reason for conservatives and liberals to fight modern slavery.

It has been quite a while since a formal entity has actually voiced support for slavery.

All of that changed with ISIS, yes?

The link between ISIS and modern slavery is Have you tried to figure out why contempo- very real. Look at the world’s refugee crisis. When people become vulnerable, exploiters move in. DEAR SISSY SPACEK, Wow! You are talking about a seriously divisive issue. I have seen heated debates about politics and religion that have ended more pleasantly than a discussion about how many spaces should be used behind a sentence. I am actually popping a Xanax right now because even sharing my stance is anxiety inducing. I need to take a couple of deep breaths. OK. I think I can do this.

I firmly believe that two spaces after a sentence in 2017 is antiquated and unnecessary. While I am often accused of being “old fashioned” and in love with the old ways of doing things, this is an instance where I definitely deviate. The double space was needed when everything was done on typewriter. Now, technology affords us the use of that space. It is no longer needed and actually looks awkward in proper writing. I don’t care what your professor says or what your high-school typing teacher taught you. Two spaces is out! Get hip! We live in a beautiful time where proportional fonts rule and monotype fonts are practically extinct.

Just hit that space bar once, unless you like your writing to look spaced out. I warn you, today’s reader will wonder what you have been smoking! Unlearning and relearning is the sign of literacy in the 21st century. Leave that nonsense in the 1900s, please.
