IN PRAISE OF UNPOPULARITY (MOSTLY) A few weeks ago, I was having drinks with a friend who works with various state and national conservation groups.

He suddenly got serious, leveled his eyes at me and asked, basically, why Boise Weekly hates the Boulder-White Clouds.

For the record, BW does not hate the Boulder and White Cloud mountains. BW has printed many stories about the area, and specifically about the effort/movement/politicoeconomic obsession to designate the Boulder-White Clouds as a national monument. At the same time, BW columnist John Rember—a lifelong resident of the BWC area and former wilderness worker there—has had much to say about the proposed designation. That he’s skeptical of the rationale is putting it mildly (see Page 7).

To some, publishing Rember’s arguments against the monument is heresy—how could we betray something held so dear by Idaho Democrats? No less than former Democratic Gov. Cecil Andrus has thrown the full weight of his legacy behind getting the designation, and as recently as this year, the Boulder-White Clouds were anointed by the ashes of Bethine Church, widow of the late-U.S. Sen. Frank Church and grand dame of the Idaho Democratic Party, with the announcement that seeing them as a national monument was her dying wish.

BW doesn’t endorse candidates, just as it rarely endorses legislation. Our articles often contain criticism of candidates, lawmakers and their laws, but it’s our job to be skeptics and to air the perspectives of all sides of an issue. We’ve done that with the Boulder-White Clouds, with Rember’s columns against the monument, with letters to the editor and guest editorials arguing otherwise, and by hosting comments—some more nuanced than others—on the debate at boiseweekly.com.

Idaho has no oil and no coal. Its gold and silver mines have been heavily exploited. Its education system ranks at or near the bottom nationally. It’s wages are abysmal and, according to a recent poll, we have the rudest drivers in the country.

We have precious little to recommend Idaho other than the state itself—that is to say, its landscape. How we manage that resource is of vital importance, and establishing that management depends on the discussion preceding it, no matter how unpopular or inconvenient it turns out to be.

MAIL SIDESTEPPING THE SIDESTEPPER Bill Cope’s opinion piece (BW, Opinion, “Executive Ordure,” Aug. 20, 2014) on executive orders by U.S. presidents is easily eight times longer than it needed to be to make his singular point: that Barack Obama has issued far fewer executive orders than many other U.S. presidents.

Absent from his analysis is any research or comment on the nature, or the types, of executive orders. It is just a compilation of the numbers.

The concern that many fair-minded people have with regard to the current occupant of the White House is his stated goal of going around Congress if he does not get what he wants. This is not simply an issue of executive orders, but rather an affront to the notion of constitutional government.

President Obama has repeatedly stated that if Congress does not act on “immigration reform,” he will simply act on his own. Never mind that there are immigration laws on the books that the Executive Branch is charged with upholding. There is no requirement that Congress change these laws, and specifically change them to suit the president’s purposes.

Bill Cope is a master of sidestepping any real issue that conflicts with his worldview and focusing on distractions. The trouble is, some of us are paying attention.

IN SUPPORT OF A BOULDER-WHITE CLOUDS MONUMENT As a Boise City Council member, I want to express my strong support for a Boulder-White Clouds National Monument, and urge Interior and Agriculture officials within President Obama’s administration to host a public meeting this year to hear from

Idahoans in consideration of this request.

I have visited BoulderWhite Clouds, hiked in the area and admired its beauty on numerous occasions. It is one of the last, worldclass locations of its kind in North America. Monument status would ensure that it is protected from mining, irresponsible recreational uses and development. This area should remain unspoiled forever, an experience left for future generations to enjoy.

Four major Idaho rivers begin in these mountains. Protecting these lands ensures clean water at the source.

Ample wildlife flourishes throughout, including several endangered species, requiring our protection. Monument status would also benefit the Idaho economy, positively impacting our state by bringing new visitors, businesses and recreational enthusiasts to our cities. Tourism would thrive as a result of worldclass recreational opportunities this area provides.

In Boise, we strive to be the most livable city in America. Designating BoulderWhite Clouds as a monument will solidify Idaho as one of the most livable states in America.

enemies, as well as in the equipment they use, such as battering rams, flashbang grenades and APCs. This shift in culture has been buoyed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s weakening of the Fourth Amendment (which protects the right to privacy in one’s home) through a series of decisions that have given the police increased authority to force their way into people’s homes, often in drug cases.

Additionally, solving the problem of police militarization requires discussion of how SWAT teams should be appropriately used and when their deployment is counterproductive and dangerous.

Even though paramilitary policing in the form of SWAT teams was created to deal with emergency scenarios such as hostage or barricade situations, the use of SWAT to execute search warrants in drug investigations has become commonplace and made up the overwhelming majority of incidents the ACLU reviewed—79 percent of the incidents the ACLU studied involved the use of a SWAT team to search a person’s home, and more than 60 percent of the cases involved searches for drugs. The use of a SWAT team to execute a search warrant essentially amounts to the use of paramilitary tactics to conduct domestic criminal investigations in searches of people’s homes.

The use of paramilitary weapons and tactics to conduct ordinary law enforcement—especially to wage the failed War on Drugs and most aggressively in communities of color—has no place in contemporary society. It is not too late to change course— through greater transparency, more oversight, policies that encourage restraint, and limitations on federal incentives, we can foster a policing culture that honors its mission to protect and serve, not to wage war.

BAD ‘PEOPLE’ The King is leaving the house I’m giving up Burger King.

Ah, the truth is, I’m not exactly giving up Burger King. I haven’t had a Burger King burger for, best guess, 25 years. As I remember it, the last Burger King burger I ever bought ended up with all of its component parts slipping out of the bun like they couldn’t stand to be in the same place together. It tasted fine—as burger-y as you would expect from just another patty of charred cow parts in just another white bread bun—whenever I could get a bite that didn’t result in a special-sauce-soaked slice of tomato in my lap or a pickle dangling off my chin. I decided from then on, if I just had to have a burger, I would get it someplace where I didn’t have finish it with a fork.

But the point being, I can hardly give up something I don’t really have. So including myself in on any boycott of an American fast food joint that’s taking its mailing address out of America is meaningless, in terms of what effect that renunciation would have on their bottom line. Still, I’m declaring myself part of the Burger King boycott, hoping that if enough Americans make it known they are disgusted with the behavior of any corporation that would remove itself to another country to avoid its responsibility to help the rest of us pay for this thing we call our homeland, then maybe the next board of directors contemplating such a move will reconsider.

As you know, this particular tempest arose last month when Burger King—which, according to the wisdom of Mitt Romney and the dictates of the U.S. Supreme Court, we must now consider to possess all the rights and privileges of “personhood”—announced it was buying a chain of Canadian donut shops, a deal recognized to be a scheme to relocate their headquarters to Canada.

All well and good. I suspect the average levels of decency, honesty and respectability in America would rise considerably if more corporate upper-floor dwellers would go dwell in places other than America.

However, this takeover wasn’t because Burger King’s CEO and entourage had a hankering to go live amongst the hosers. Burger King was only diving down a wormhole opened by other companies—pharmaceutical giants in particular—which have been buying foreign companies and taking their financial operations elsewhere to take advantage of lower corporate tax rates. It was also widely suspected that if Burger King got away with it—and there was no legal reason they wouldn’t—more and more other U.S. companies would follow the example.

This trend didn’t get the attention it deserved until the Burger King announcement, I think because far too many people couldn’t name a giant pharmaceutical corporation if it were slithering up their leg. How many Americans even know who is producing the pills they pop? (I don’t know about yours,

but mine come, via the pharmacy, in little brown bottles with aggravating caps and instructions for how many I should take and when I should take them. Not a word about who made them, or where. Seriously, I could be taking something concocted by Nazi Pedophiliac Super-Asshole, Inc., headquartered in Hell, and not know it.)

Republicans would argue—and, of course, do—that our corporate tax rates are too high in the U.S., and that the solution to this corporate exodus to sunnier tax climes would ease, if only we were to bring those rates down to Canadian (or Irish, or Bahamian) levels.

Poor corporations. Poor, poor corporations. Still having to cough up 35 percent here in the States, when they might be paying only 15 percent in Canada (or Ireland, or the Bahamas). In spite of U.S. rates having dropped significantly… and in spite of 30 years of an upward cascade of wealth pouring into the insatiable maw of the one-percent who already own 50 percent of everything…

Republican politicians insist that the answers to all our woes is to give their corporate sugar daddies anything they want, or off to Canada (Ireland, the Bahamas) they go.

What’s missing in this grand old plan of theirs is that this is the U.S. of A., not Canada. Not Ireland. Not the Bahamas. If Canada (or the rest) were to suddenly decide to build the most powerful, most sophisticated military in history, then play avenging traffic cop to the rest of the world, watch what would happen to their tax rates then.

If Canada were home to 350 million citizens, all of whom need and expect some government involvement in schools, jobs, food, housing, transportation, cities, agriculture, medical matters, environmental protection, law enforcement, etc. etc. etc., instead of their current population—one-tenth of ours—watch what would happen to their tax rates then.

If Canada was leading the global charge on preventing pandemics, playing godfather to half the Middle East, feeding the starving masses, etc. etc. etc., watch what would happen to their tax rates then. Eh? The truth is, ours is a big, complicated, densely populated, complex and powerful country, and it also happens to be the leader of the rest of the world in about every endeavor that needs to be funded in some manner to keep going. Corporations want that status to continue, I’m sure, but at somebody else’s expense. Which is precisely why our taxes don’t ever change much, but theirs have been dropping like rocks, why our standard of living is languishing in the doldrums and they’re out in billion-dollar yachts enjoying the smooth sailing.

If indeed corporations are people, they are proving to be lousy, greedy, and—dare I say it?—disloyal people.

COMMERCIAL MONUMENT Privatization, commodification and sacrifice zones

Every few years we’re treated to a display of magical thinking by Western state legislators, people who believe that Washington can be forced to give federal lands to the states.

These folks forget that the only reason their states exist is because the federal government stole the American West from the people who owned it—fair and square, by means of treaties forced upon defeated and demoralized chiefs. Should those treaties be violated by transfer of federal lands to the states, the lands would revert to the tribes and their lawyers, who might tolerate palefaced squatters if they came up with a couple of centuries’ back rent and royalties for sawn-down forests, plowedup prairie and mined-out minerals.

I doubt such legal niceties cloud the minds of sagebrush rebels. They dream of lakes and mountains sold to the highest bidder, forests transformed into stump farms and mining regulations buried under great piles of smelted slag. It’s a vision straight out of the 19th century, when Manifest Destiny was our national creed, Progress our national religion and the frontier a short walk to the west. There were no limits on what you could do if you didn’t mind wrecking people’s lives and landscapes.

Asking our legislators to look critically at that vision is like asking fish to explain their philosophy of water. It’s not something they’ve ever felt the need to contemplate. They simply know, in their hearts, that if the federal government would stop interfering, the West could develop as God intended. If any Indian tribes object, they should remember what happened when they objected last time.

For a year or so, I’ve been writing about the internal contradictions, hidden agendas and unintended consequences of a BoulderWhite Clouds National Monument. Magical thinking underlies the arguments for a BWC monument just as much as it underlies the arguments of sagebrush rebels. In both cases, wishes overwhelm reality. But here are some realities that are pushing back: —Wilderness is artifact. It’s a product of the 1964 Wilderness Act, which provides a legal basis for excluding motors, mountain bikes and permanent structures from designated real estate. It requires maintenance and law enforcement, in the form of wilderness rangers who destroy fire rings and lean-tos, and who make sure dogs are on leash, horses have packed-in feed and people don’t defecate in the lakes or on their neighbors’ tent sites. It’s a good law, but it’s just a law. Without enforcement and public support, it means nothing.

—A BWC monument won’t guarantee wilderness. Only Congress can do that. Much of the proposed monument is already being managed as a wilderness study area, de facto wilderness until Congress acts on the matter—as close as you can get to wilderness-inperpetuity. A monument would open the area to ugly compromise with various mechanized interest groups, 10-year management plans, BOI S EW EEKLY.COM

paved trails for geriatrics and so on.

—A national monument will cost money the federal government doesn’t have. For a new 575,000-acre national monument in New Mexico, the BLM has budgeted for three full-time employees, or 192,000 acres per employee. Unreconstructed locals, sensing federal weakness, are making new roads in the monument with off-road vehicles and vandalizing signs and intimidating visitors. If you think this sort of thing can’t happen in Idaho, try parking your Volvo station wagon and mountain bikes outside a Challis bar and going in for a few mojitos. You’ll be back in the 19th century in no time.

—If President Obama declares a BoulderWhite Clouds National Monument, he’ll guarantee that Idaho Democrats get no less than 35 percent of the vote for the next 50 years. No more, either.

—A national monument is disguised privatization of federal land. Real estate development surrounds these areas. A good example is the Wood River Valley, “Gateway to the Sawtooth Wilderness,” a once-beautiful place now jammed with mausoleums for the 1 percent, For Sale signs, the human wreckage attendant to low wages, and daily traffic jams.

Much of the impetus for a BWC national monument comes from Blaine County’s desire to return to its glorious and storied past—the 1992-2007 real estate bubble.

—Custer County opponents, not immune to magical thinking themselves, prefer to be seen as cowboys rather than house boys.

—A different form of privatization comes in the form of public-private partnerships. Forprofit companies manage recreation and collect fees for the Forest Service, BLM and Park Service, and split the proceeds with them. The effect is a ban on poor people on public lands, and a bunch of low-paying service jobs.

—Something real exists behind all the legalities. The Boulders and the White Clouds are high desert, as dry and delicate as a winter bouquet. Any increase in visitors will damage them, in the manner of the fenced-off, “recovering” areas around Sawtooth and Hell Roaring and Alpine lakes in the Sawtooths, places trampled into dusty sterility by hiking boots.

The impulse to designate a national monument should be seen for what it is: the sacrifice of wildlands to get more visitors and their dollars into Idaho, the continued commodification of nature and worship of development as the natural order of things.

Monument proponents get huffy if you ask them to look critically at their vision, but in the end their arguments rest on framing the Boulder White Clouds as a tourist trap.

While a national monument won’t offer more protection than already exists, it will deliver the BWC to the tourism-industrial complex, where it will join other once-wild areas sacrificed to the profit motive. Better—far better— to give it back to the Indians.

Rubber or rail? Boise citizens weigh in on a possible circulator for the downtown core.

CHARTING THE COURSE When the idea for a downtown streetcar came up in 2004, and then sparked again in 2008, public outreach was “relaxed,” as Assistant City Engineer Jim Pardy put it. Then, the plan was for a fixed-rail streetcar to operate in an east-west rectangle from St. Luke’s to 16th Street. Stymied by lack of funding and no small amount of public skepticism, city leaders shelved the project before recently bringing back the idea of a “circulator.” which could have either wheels or rails.

On Sept. 10-11, the Boise Public Works Department hosted two two-hour workshops, complete with blueprints depicting possible routes. The Rose Room’s ceiling beams were laced in satin—complete with string lights and paper lanterns—and an organizer called it “a workshop disguised as a wedding.”

Forty Boise building owners, tenants and residents spread out at the tables, ready to delve into the proposed routes.

Nick Baumann, an electrician at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, came to the meeting because his 16th Street office is next to one of the proposed routes.

He said a system like this is “overdue.”

“I wish we were talking about a Boise-toNampa [circulator],” he said. “But maybe this will get it started.”

Possible routes presented in the east and west areas of downtown include connection on State Street from Ninth to 16th streets; a route on Jefferson from Ninth to 16th and back down Bannock; a similar route from Ninth to 16th on Idaho Street, rounding around Main as well; and connection to the Linen District. Other routes include circulation to Boise State University via University Drive.

Each route included goals, like connecting key activity centers and serving high population and employment density.

Pardy, the city’s project manager for the circulator, said the mode of transportation— whether it’s rubber tires or rails—won’t be decided until the route has been selected.

He was happy with the participation over the workshops.

“There were some intriguing thoughts that came up,” Pardy said, “Like the River Street option. There was an interest in some of the routes we didn’t think would be very favorable. … At the end of the day, our jobs should be very easy because the right route should just come to the top. We’re engineers, we’re not very [politically] opinionated.”

Craig Quintana, of the Ada County Highway District, stood nearby, listening to the breakout groups discuss the routes.

“No matter what the city decides, it’s still our roads,” he said. “We’ll need to make accommodations to the roads, whether the circulator is on rubber tires or needs a rail.”

ESTO ES TU PODER (THIS IS YOUR POWER) The Idaho Democratic Party woos the state’s Latinos HARRISON BERRY According to the Pew Research Center’s Hispanic Trends Project, the median age of an Idaho Latino was 22 years old in 2011.

Estefania Mondragon comes very close; she’s the treasurer for the Idaho Democratic Latino Caucus and is 23 years old. She says she has been politically active—beginning with campus clubs, volunteer work and, finally, paid positions as a political operative—for five years.

“I think it’s very interesting to see how we’re growing up and becoming politically active. A lot of people are becoming more politically active and they see these injustices,” she said, referring to the maze that is the U.S. immigration system. She’s also quick to point to high dropout rates among Latinos and what she calls Idaho’s resistance to accepting federal money to expand its Medicaid program. Now, Mondragon said, is a time for action.

“We have an election coming up, “ she said. “That’s an opportunity to really make our voices heard and that’s the point of The Power of Your Vote: to make our voices heard and to reach out to power and power that aligns with us.”

They’re on the right path,” said Mondragon. “There’s more of an intersection between the two.”

Earlier this year, Labrador—thought by some commentators to be a potential trailblazer for immigration reform in Washington, D.C.—hinted that Republican House Speaker John Boehner should lose his position if he brought immigration reform to the House floor. During his ninth appearance on NBC’s

Meet the Press this past July, he told then-host David Gregory that America should take hard measures to “stem this tide” of tens of thousands of undocumented children entering the United States from Central America.

“I know it sounds harsh. I know it sounds difficult. We need to take a strong stance against what’s happening,” Labrador said.

During the same broadcast, Washington Post columnist and former George W. Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson pointed out that Labrador and other Republicans’ antagonistic rhetoric about immigration was excessive.

“This is a delicate balance for Republicans,” he said. “They need to be critical of the president without alienating a rising demographic group, and they have not been very good at that. When you go after kids and mothers, that’s a long-term problem for the Republican Party.”

That debate has taken root with the Idaho Democratic Latino Caucus and, by extension, the Idaho Democratic Party. Labrador’s challenger, Shirley Ringo, characterizes her opponent’s stance as “unproductive.”

“I really feel that Raul Labrador has been one of the forces that has been preventing [immigration reform], and there are many in the Latino community who feel the same way,” she said.

But immigration reform isn’t just a political problem; it’s a human one. The process by which the United States admits new citizens can often take decades to complete, separating families and leaving hundreds of thousands in legal limbo. It also continues to draw the attention of Idaho’s agricultural industry, which has repeatedly called on the Gem State’s congressional delegation to enact some kind of immigration reform.

“We would like to see quotas that provide a quantity of workforce that meets the demand,” Milk Producers of Idaho President Brent Olmstead told Boise Weekly. “If we can set up a guest worker program, I think that is fair overall and will satisfy demand for employers.”

Democrats also see their platform intersecting with the voting issues of Latinos on the issues of education and Medicare. Ringo, who was a teacher for 38 years before joining the Idaho Legislature in 1998, told BW that she sees education as a major voting issue among that demographic.

“For the [Idaho] Latino Caucus, I think that they really value educational opportunity,” she said. “I want any public school to have solid teachers, and you have to have opportunities for students to get any support systems they need to succeed.”

The problem of school funding is acute in Idaho, which consistently ranks poorly for per-student education funding. According to the Education Law Center, inequalities in Idaho’s education system have resulted in boosts for spending on classroom technology, but teacher pay remains low, as does access to early childhood education. Particularly distasteful to Ringo is the state’s use of merit pay—higher wages for teachers in high-performing classrooms.

“In order to be sure that we have the most solid teachers in all of the neighborhood schools, we want to take care that we don’t have a compensation system where teachers in the more challenging positions are penalized.

That could happen if we used test scores to decide how much to pay our teachers,” she said.

Ringo has also indicated that raising the minimum wage—currently $7.25 an hour— could be a boon for the Latino community.

Latinos make up 11 percent of Idaho’s population but account for just 8 percent of the state’s buying power, according to the U.S. Census and the Pew Research Center Hispanic Trends Project.

But Jennifer Martinez, Idaho Democratic Party Development director said Democratic candidates should be wary of treating Latinos as a monolithic voting bloc.

“Latino values are all about family, giving back to the community. They’re very invested in that,” she said. “And I don’t think that’s different from Idahoans in general.”

BOYS TO MEN Before disgraced professional football player Ray Rice joined the Baltimore Ravens, he was a star running back for Rutgers University. And long before Rice was accused of assaulting his then-fiancee—now-wife—in February, he was a young athlete at a high school in New Rochelle, N.Y. Simply put, he was an impressionable boy years before he grew into a man’s body with enough strength to knock his girlfriend unconscious. That’s the Ray Rice that the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence wants to know more about: not the man who was indefinitely suspended by the National Football League, but the young man who could still grant respect and integrity their proper due.

“Rather than debate the NFL’s decision or the individuals involved, we … would prefer to ask the question: ‘How can we raise and champion a generation of young men, including athletes, who value women and girls in their community and openly challenge all forms of abuse and violence?’” said Kelly Miller, executive director of the ICASDV. A 2013 Idaho Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that approximately 12 percent of Idaho high-school girls and 6 percent of Idaho high-school boys report that they have been hit, slapped or physically abused on purpose by a boy- or girlfriend during the previous 12 months.

The coalition is using the Ray Rice controversy as a platform to encourage more Idaho high-school coaches and athletic directors to implement something called the “Coaching Boys Into Men” program, developed by Futures Without Violence.

“Winning games is important to every coach,” reads the CBIM playbook. “However, it shouldn’t be our only goal. A big part of the job is helping to develop solid, responsible athletes who are able to become upstanding citizens.”

The playbook is direct and urges coaches and players to actually take a specific pledge: “I believe in treating women and girls with honor and respect. I know that violence is neither a solution nor a sign of strength. I believe that real men lead with conviction and speak out against violence against women and girls. I believe that I can be a role model to others by taking this pledge.”

The Idaho coalition says the CBIM program has already begun to make its way into a number of Idaho locker rooms.

“Athletes imitate their coaches’ language, attitudes and actions,” said Miller. “Speaking respectfully about women and girls, motivating through positive encouragement and honoring the rules of competition embody a healthy athletic program.”

ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL Everything you never knew about Boise’s Habitat for Humanity CINDY SIKKEMA Idaho’s housing slump was hardly a secret.

According to U.S. Census data, new construction housing permits tumbled nearly 500 percent between 2004 and 2011, leaving many of Idaho’s toolboxes to quietly gather dust.

But not at the Boise chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In contrast to the rest of the state, Habitat has been busy, completing a staggering six homes in a single year—a new record for the Boise affiliate. And on a late spring day, a group of 14 volunteers huddled over the morning’s first mugs of coffee, preparing to wield the tools that would make it happen.

According to Executive Director Tom Lay, six homes in one year is a remarkable achievement. “During the first 10 years of our operation, the Boise affiliate of Habitat for Humanity was completing, on average, one house per year, for a total of 10, maybe 12 houses in 10 years. So completing six this fiscal year is something we’re pretty proud of.”

The home was dedicated to a family of six who moved from Tanzania to Boise in 2010—a relocation of more than 9,000 miles.

According to Habitat for Humanity, Fabian Sikabwe and Noella Hamisi were originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but fled to a Tanzanian refugee camp in 1999 to escape armed conflict in their native country.

The couple subsequently met and married in the camp, where they would remain for the next 11 years.

Located in central Boise’s quiet Frazier Place Subdivision—a 15-home development with space for a community garden—the four-bedroom, two-bath home was completed in May, and has been a perfect fit for their young family.

But make no mistake—this home is no freebie.

“One of the greatest misunderstandings about Habitat for Humanity is that the home, upon completion, is just handed over to the family,” said Lay. Instead, homeowners like the Sikabwe/ Hamisi family must first meet, and then complete, a daunting array of eligibility requirements. It is a process requiring considerable patience since the average wait time is anywhere from 18 months to three years.

According to Lay, before anything else, “there must be a need for housing. In Ada County, that need is often defined as families that are living in too small of a home for their

family size and/or paying too much for it.

They’re overburdened by their housing obligations.”

Next, a “family must have lived or worked in Ada County for six months, they must have been continuously employed for the last 12 months, and they must have a good credit record,” said Lay. “Finally, they need to be willing to partner with us—defined primarily in terms of the sweat equity commitment they will make to the home—most often 500 hours.”

In case that number didn’t quite register, 500 hours is equivalent to three and a half months of full-time, 40 hour work weeks. And at least 40 percent of those 500 hours must be completed before a family is even placed on the waiting list for a home.

“Since their houses aren’t even in progress yet, they can get those first hours by working on a neighbor’s home, working at the ReStore, or working in the Habitat office,” said Lay. Once construction begins, “we ask that they put in as many hours as they can on their own home.”

ReStore is located in Southwest Boise and opened its doors in 2008. Billing itself as a “used and surplus building materials store,” the outlet is a treasure trove of affordable finds for the do-it-yourself types.

Revenue from ReStore covers 100 percent of Habitat’s operating costs, including staff salaries and office overhead, allowing “every bit of monetary donations to go directly into building,” said Lay. But the heart that truly keeps Habitat beating is its volunteers.

And on that particular spring morning, 11 volunteers from Keynetics—a company that provides paid time off at least twice a year so that employees may volunteer—stand ready to lend a hand. Megan Mann, marketing manager at Keynetics, has been spearheading the Habitat volunteer effort for the past several years.

“It’s not difficult to recruit for Habitat projects—in fact, I usually have to turn volunteers away,” said Mann. “It’s just a fun, interactive day where you get to do a lot of hands-on work.”

Hands-on is exactly right, since the group will spend the next seven hours xeriscaping— an environmentally friendly, low maintenance landscape option that gives homeowners a break on expensive upkeep.

Paul Thompson, Habitat’s construction manager, calls everyone together. “Does everybody know how to put plants in the ground?” he asks. Some nod, others look slightly less certain, but everyone seems eager to dig in. Before distributing shovels and rakes, Thompson offers one last piece of advice: “If you don’t do this kind of work very often, you might want to do a few toe-touches”—an excellent suggestion, considering the mountain of crushed stone that awaits them.

Working amidst the Keynetics employees are three men called “crew leads,” skilled individuals who form the core of Habitat’s volunteer workforce. The group overall is comprised of 15 men and one woman, ranging in age from 60 to 86, and hailing from disparate backgrounds: teaching, engineering, construction and medicine. Many are retired and the majority have spent years working with Habitat programs, both in Boise and beyond.

Thompson’s description of this group is “awesome” and watching the crew leads dive into their labor, it quickly becomes evident his word is well chosen. Ribbing one another good-naturedly, they confidently swing implements through the air as they make short work of preparing the site. To a person, the leads are reluctant to take any credit for Habitat’s record-breaking year.

“As an individual, I don’t feel like I deserve any special credit,” said crew lead Larry Binder. “There’s over 700 11 volunteers and more than 20,000 hours that have been put in over the past few B O I S E WE E KLY. C O M

years, so it’s clearly not about any one person.”

10 Binder, who owned and operated his own construction business for more than two decades, has spent five years working three days a week building houses for complete strangers. Why? “It’s allowed me to pass on knowledge I’ve learned over the years,” he said. “And besides, sitting around was never my style. So it’s fun to be a part of this—but not to take credit.”

Sam Chambers, a retired university professor and fellow crew lead, clearly enjoys the camaraderie. “Not many guys I know are as good as these guys,” he said, and like Binder he would rather be volunteering than “sitting around home watching TV.” Another crew lead said volunteering kept him out of trouble with his wife—a tongue-in-cheek deflection that perfectly captures the group’s unassuming spirit.

The truth is, Habitat for Humanity may not have achieved what it has without them.

“Our crew leads are an amazing group,” said Habitat Volunteer Coordinator Sara Waltman. “They’re very dedicated and have given hundreds upon hundreds of hours.”

Even more, Habitat has leveraged crew lead experience and expertise into increased output from the army of intermittent volunteers.

“We’re able to take these novice volunteers, break them down into smaller groups, and have them work with a crew lead so that they get individualized training in order to learn a new skill set,” said Waltman. “It allows us to utilize volunteers in a very efficient manner.”

All those hours of donated labor allow Habitat to sell families their homes essentially at cost.

“The final mortgage covers materials and services—such as electrical, and plumbing, since those require specific licensing—as well as the cost of the land,” said Lay. “It’s a terrific opportunity for families to join the economic mainstream through homeownership.”

“A home offers security—kids know they’ll be coming back to the same house, going to the same school—and the adults in the households become stakeholders in their neighborhoods and communities,” said Lay. “It’s a strong impact.”

The $21 million City Center project is well underway; its financing is another matter.

CCDC’S PRIVATE CONVERSATION ABOUT ITS VERY PUBLIC PROJECT

Kathy Vawter could not agree more. In 1996, she and her two daughters were among the first families to benefit from the still relatively new Boise affiliate.

“My daughters and I had lived in a duplex for a number of years,” said Vawter. “I had seen a brochure about Habitat at our church— I read it a little bit, but didn’t think too much about it. Then our rent kept going up and up, and I thought, ‘Hey, I’d like to take a look at that brochure again.’

“So, I applied to the program and we were told about the application process and the volunteer hours we’d need to put in,” said Vawter.

“If I remember right, it was 500 hours—which seemed overwhelming, since my immediate family members all lived in the Midwest and wouldn’t be able to help.”

But Vawter persevered, chipping away at her hours until she and her girls were eligible for the next available home—a three bedroom townhouse in Boise’s Bench neighborhood.

Once ground was broken, Vawter was amazed at what happened next.

“Volunteers would come every Saturday at 8:30 in the morning to help build my house,” she said. “Ninety percent of the people who built my home I had never met before. And that has always stuck with me—that people

would do that kind of thing. It was really something.”

Many of the volunteers would go on to become Vawter’s close friends, people she still keeps in touch with today. It’s just one more aspect of the experience she never expected.

“I remember the former executive director of Habitat, Dr. Robert Frazier, saying to me at the dedication, ‘This will change your life— moving into this house.’ I remember thinking at the time, ‘Um, OK, whatever.’ I didn’t really get it,” said Vawter. “But he was right, it has changed my life—and my daughters and I are better for it.”

To call Vawter a Habitat success story might be an understatement. Last fall, she paid off her 20-year mortgage, three years early.

“It’s just a wonderful program,” said Vawter, who continues to give back to Habitat by working on homes for others. “It came into my life at a good time and it’s made me look at things differently. When you see people helping you, you can’t help but want to help somebody else.”

As for achieving the American dream of owning her own home, free and clear, Vawter had this to say: “It’s almost indescribable—it’s just an incredible feeling.”

The Capital City Development Corporation has plenty to say about the very public City Center project. It just prefers not to talk about its financing in public.

At noon on Sept. 15—the exact time that tons of dirt were being pulled from the Grove Plaza to make way to for the $21 million project—CCDC went into executive session to talk about how to help pay for the development. Simply put, CCDC commissioners asked everyone to leave the room, exercising Idaho Code 67-2345, allowing the agency to “communicate with legal counsel regarding pending/imminently-likely litigation.”

And there’s plenty of litigation to talk about in the shadow of an Aug. 28 ruling from 4th District Judge Melissa Moody, who said the deal crafted between CCDC and the Greater Boise Auditorium District to finance the project through millions of dollars in bonds violated the Idaho Constitution (BW, Citydesk, “GBAD Plans Tried to Circumvent Constitution,” Sept. 3, 2014).

“There were holes she was not comfortable with,” said CCDC legal counsel Ryan Armbruster.

Moody ruled that too many questions remained in what, as she put it, “subterfuge for what is actually a conditional sales contract.” In particular, the judge pointed to the uncomfortable “open-ended” promises in GBAD’s lease agreement with CCDC. Boise City Councilman David Eberle, also a CCDC commissioner, quizzed Armbruster.

“Does this contemplate a change in ownership [of the City Center] or does this rectify the judge’s ruling?” asked Eberle.

“We’ll talk about that in executive session,” said Armbruster, not wanting to show the agency’s hand—at least publicly.

Boise Mayor Dave Bieter, also a CCDC commissioner, tried to crack some sunshine on what was rapidly becoming a mysterious conversation.

“So, where are we in the court case?” asked the mayor.

Armbruster wouldn’t take the bait.

“We’ll talk about that in executive session,” said the attorney.

The only thing that CCDC legal counsel would publicly reveal is that CCDC wants to pursue requests from outside financial agencies to front the City Center financing deal.

“We always believed that this deal was financeable as long as we had legal authority,” said Eric Heringer, a CCDC consultant on the City Center project.

Just how that financing comes together will be hard to gauge, unless the public entity that is CCDC starts sharing more with the public that it serves.

And the government fled to England and stayed there for five years, and I became a prisoner of war for six weeks. They wanted me to be the leader of young farmers who wanted to become Nazis. I was sent home to raise food for the Germans, and later on I joined the resistance against the Germans.

GYS VAN BEEK War hero HARRISON BERRY Gys van Beek was a 21-year-old corporal in the Dutch army when Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940. Soon thereafter he joined the Dutch resistance, serving in whatever capacity he could to disrupt the occupiers’ communications, hide and transport refugees, and aid the Allied cause. In 1948, he moved with his youngest brother to the United States, where they raised dairy cows in Utah, California and, finally, Idaho.

At 95 years old, van Beek is nearly blind, though he’s working with a local writer to complete a memoir of his experiences during the war. He shared some of his experiences with Boise Weekly in a conversation at the Boise assisted living facility where he lives.

What did you do before the war?

I was farming and had to get off school when I was 14. We grew everything. We had 50 acres of orchard, 300 chickens. We had milk cows, plough ground. We had a big farm there in Angeren, Holland.

What was the outbreak of the war like?

I was already in the army. I was a corporal. 1939. The Germans arrived the 10th

of May, 1940. And I stood guard in the Peace Palace in the Hague. Bombs started falling and planes came down and I was a corporal of the room there, and I told the soldiers to go ahead to a hiding place that was built against bombing and grenade fire, and I was halfway down the stairs and in panic, 20 soldiers jumped on top of me. I refused to go to the hospital because it was my duty to help defend our country. I was

What did you do for the resistance?

I helped every way which I could. I helped several pilots. I saw [American fighter pilot Howard Moebius] come down.

But that was a big thing because I knew that the Messerschmitt that shot him down shot into his parachute. I caught him that night; he was hiding in some bushes close to where the plane came down. The whole town was full of Germans. We found barns, lean-tos. Moebius stayed in an apple shed and the Germans found him. I had a young man make him a piece of paper, what they call Ausweis, that said he was deaf and dumb. He was sick at that time because he had blood poisoning. A doctor nourished him to health and they escaped and they got over the river and Moebius was home by Christmas.

After Moebius left, what did you do?

I stayed until we were liberated. I was happy to be free again, and I finished my studies as a civil engineer. And after six years of study I had a diploma and I could do what I wanted, and I chose to go to America. We went to Salt Lake City. We met a man who was dairying in California, and that’s what we decided to do: Live in California and milk cows. We made a trip to Idaho and said, “We could save up some money and go to Idaho and start farming,” which we did.

You’ve been recognized as an Aid Giver by the Shoah Foundation, established by

filmmaker Steven Spielberg [to recognize, remember and study the Holocaust]. Can you elaborate on what you did for Jewish people in Holland during the war?

I was called by a lady who was representing Steven Spielberg. So I said, “You’re calling the wrong person,” because my wife worked for a city where the Jews were gathered and sent to Germany. She also did the bookwork for the few who returned. The woman met me in a fancy Boise hotel. She asked me questions, and I said I actually did very few good things for the Jewish people, but I helped them where I could. I helped them find places to hide. But what stands out was, I was bicycling toward the railroad station where Jewish people were being unloaded and sent on to Germany and I saw a little boy, about 10 years old, who came wild-eyed, running toward me. He ran under the train trying to escape. I motioned to him that he should jump by me on the bicycle, which he did. He held me tight, and about two blocks further he jumped off and I never saw him again. And the lady said, “That’s what I want! That’s what I want!” That he jumped on my bicycle, and he jumped off.

And that turned into a thank-you letter from Steven Spielberg and the Shoah organization. They thought it was a big deal.

What was it about Holland that made you leave?

We could never buy the farm back. That was sold in the crisis years. We never could buy that back. We knew that if we worked hard, we could go to America and own our own farm.

What did you like about Idaho?

Truckloads of potatoes, truckloads of onions, and all kinds of fruit and wonderful people not bothering us to become Mormon.

We started with 25 cows and later on, my brother and I became top dairymen. Later on I was milking 300 cows. I bought a cow every month and paid it off.

Canada gave us peanut butter, Anne of Green Gables, Michael Buble, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Each September, it also restores my faith in motion pictures as the definitive art form of our times. At this year’s annual Toronto International Film Festival, instead of hitting its usual high mark early in the proceedings, the quality of movies grew exponentially over the course of the 11-day cinematic marathon, which was filled with more than 500 hours of movies.

Many of the films that premiered at TIFF could end up as nominees for 2015’s Best Picture Oscar. If the Motion Picture Academy grants its full capacity of 10 nominations (it

can be as few as five if the Academy so chooses), the Best Picture slots are already filling up fast. Presuming Boyhood gets the first nomination, my guess is several films emerging from Toronto—Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash, Wild— are Best Picture contenders. There is also a chance that one of a few smaller films—Mr. Turner, Rosewater, Still Alice and St. Vincent— could grab a nomination as well. Presuming that the still-to-be seen Birdman, Gone Girl, Interstellar, Into the Woods and Unbroken also live up to their hype, the Academy will have an embarrassment of riches come January when it needs to whittle down its short list.

In the meantime, “patience” is the watchword for those moviegoers anxious to witness some greatness. Birdman, Gone Girl, St. Vincent and Whiplash come out in October; Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Interstellar, Rosewater, The Theory of Everything will be out for Thanksgiving; and Into the Woods, Mr. Turner, Still Alice, Unbroken and Wild open in December.

Boise Weekly spoke to quite a few of the stars, directors and screenwriters behind these fine films, and, as their movies come to Boise, we’ll share their insights. In the meantime, here’s a list of some of the 50-plus films that we screened at TIFF:

A conversation with a female New York Times sports reporter

BY JESSICA MURRI New York Times sports reporter Karen Crouse got her start in the field young. Her love of sports reporting began with an extracredit eighth-grade project to put together a magazine. She decided to make a swimming magazine, went to her local swim club and asked to interview Mike Bruner—the Michael Phelps of the 1970s.

The way Crouse tells the story, Bruner’s coach, Bill Rose, told him he had to stay after practice for an interview with a journalist.

“So you can imagine how he feels when he walks out on the pool deck and sees me, a 12-year-old girl in pigtails, with index cards and a pen shaking in my hands,” Crouse said.

Afterward, she told her dad that this is what she wanted to do when she grew up.

“My whole life changed on an extra-credit assignment,” she said.

Crouse was invited to speak at the Andrus Center Conference on Women and Leadership for the second year in a row on Sept. 11. Her speech packed the Simplot Ballroom at Boise State University with about 500 women—and like most of the conference, only a handful of men. She spent an hour telling stories to the audience about her experiences as a female journalist in a male-dominated field of reporting: sports.

Originally from Northern California, she landed at The New York Times in 2005 on the football beat. She’s covered all mainstream sports including Nascar and boxing. Now, she covers golf—a place where she said she rarely looks like she “belongs.” But she’s used her time in the field to help change stigmas and even advocate for the breakdown of male-only memberships.

As recent as the Sunday before the conference, when she was supposed to interview a golfer, Crouse was told she couldn’t enter the male-only clubhouse.

“The attendees even started to form a human chain to keep me out,” Crouse told the crowd. “And this was not 1964. This was Sunday. The manager told me, ‘I do not want a woman coming in here so she can watch the players shower.’ I couldn’t do my job.”

After a speech that left the audience in a standing ovation, Crouse sat down with Boise Weekly to further explore what it’s like to do her job, and the barriers she deals with on a daily basis.

her stories is to attract people who wouldn’t normally pick up the Sports section of the paper.

“Sports sections are always going to attract the diehard sports fan. It’s like opening a chocolate shop and hoping that chocoholics will come in. You don’t need to worry about that. The person you want to get in is the person who thinks they’re a salt person and they don’t like sweets. If you can get them in to sample your product, then you’re doing something right,” she said.

Crouse takes special aim at the wives and girlfriends of those diehard sports fans, who might have a “reflexive aversion” to the section.

“It starts to feel like a clubhouse that they don’t have the password to, so they just ignore it altogether,” she said.

To get those who savor salt into the candy shop, Crouse strives to write stories about golf that aren’t actually about golf.

“People who cannot relate to the trick shots, or how patient [a golfer] is with fans when signing all their autographs, they can relate to his frustrations about his kids doing all these activities and him not being around for that,” she said.

One of Crouse’s most powerful stories was published shortly after she started working for the Times. It starts, “If you want to plug into Laveranues Cole’s inner life, borrow his iPod,” and continues to tell the story of the New York Jets football player who grew up being sexually abused by his stepfather.

“There were people who didn’t know him and just thought he was one of those entitled NFL players, and when I was able to tell his story, there were so many people who are suffering in silence who thought they were the only ones living this nightmare,” Crouse told BW. “Then they find out this prima donna,

overpaid football player has experienced the same pain. … People who couldn’t relate to him as a football player could relate to him as a human being.”

Crouse doesn’t just differentiate herself in the field by being a woman and writing stories that delve deeper than scoreboards and overtimes. She said she also asks the most offthe-wall questions in press conferences. And she wears “crazy pants.”

During her speech at the Andrus Center’s conference, she wore a pair of slacks covered in a collage of headlines, photos and newsprint. One of her proudest accomplishments, she said, is still being able to fit into those pants, which she bought in Orange County in 1998. Since then, “crazy pants” has become her signature.

“Patty Hearst is on my pants,” she said, looking on the back side of her knee. “That is just too great.”

When she first started covering sports, she said she got sick of her outfits being critiqued—is her skirt too short? Is her blouse not buttoned up enough, are her heels too tall? She said, “forget this,” and started only wearing pants.

But she said she couldn’t wear plain pants.

That’s not her personality.

“When I first walked into a locker room, being a woman was a total disadvantage,” she said. “People are thinking, ‘Who is she, what are her motives, why is she here?’ All those things. By the second day, I’m the ‘crazy pants lady.’”

Crouse described being a woman in the field of sports reporting as “these little battles where you’re not even sure if you’re leaving a mark.” “‘Why do you keep doing this?’ It’s the question my husband asks me on occasion,” Crouse said. “The answer would be because it hasn’t gotten old to me.”

If you take the journey to the Bruneau Canyon overlook, 65 miles southeast of Boise, you’ll see a parking lot with an interpretive sign and a view that Heather Tiel-Nelson, of the Bureau of Land Management, said can’t be captured by a camera.

With no toilets or running water, the overlook is as spartan as its view, showing off the Bruneau-Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness, which rests within one of the BLM’s most recent wilderness designations: the Owyhee Canyonlands, established by President Barack Obama in 2009.

On Sept. 16, the BLM unveiled plans for improvements to the site, in celebration of the Wilderness Act’s 50th anniversary.

According to the BLM, improvements will include enhanced trail access to the canyon rim, more educational interpretation signs, new restroom facilities and improved safety features—including 200 feet of railing that will let visitors walk right up to the rim and peer across the 1,300-foot canyon.

“It’s a site that needed this kind of attention,” Tiel-Nelson said. “It’s a fairly accessible site to be able to look at wilderness, to be able to take it all in, to be able to drive and park here to do that.”

Tiel-Nelson said she’s excited these improvements align with the anniversary of the act, signed into law on Sept. 3, 1964.

The act began with Howard Zahniser in 1955—almost a decade before it became law. The leader of the Wilderness Society at the time, Zahniser grew tired of the feds’ attempts to keep wilderness areas wild.

“Let us be done with a wilderness preservation program made up of a sequence of overlapping emergencies, threats and defense campaigns,” he said.

After 66 revisions and 18 hearings, President Lyndon Johnson signed the bill into law, putting more than 9 million acres into the National Wilderness Preservation System.

Today, the Wilderness Act protects almost 110 million acres of land in all but six states, including more than 4.5 million acres in Idaho—4 percent of the state’s total area.

To commemorate the act, a coalition called the 50th Anniversary National Wilderness Planning Team, or Wilderness50, has been formed and met in Washington, D.C. Sept. 15-17 to discuss the next 50 years of wilderness protection and meet with congressional leaders. A larger National Wilderness Conference is set for Oct. 15-19 in Albuquerque, N.M., with members including the National Park Service, the University of Idaho, the University of Montana, the Sierra Club, BLM and the International League of Conservation Writers.

Scholars opine that no work of literature has exerted quite the influence on European culture and art as Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

According to fire.cityofboise.org, Boise’s first volunteer fire department was formed in 1876, becoming a permanent, fully paid department in 1902. PURESPA BUBBLE THERAPY PORTABLE SPA Whenever I pop into Target I have to ignore the clothing aisles; the big, cheap earrings; the Legos-for-adults furniture; and the entire home decor section. On a recent visit, however, I saw something that tested the inner-most columns of my self control: In a box about the size of a small bedside table was a 120-jet, 210-gallon, four-person hot tub. For $500. Hot tubs are usually enormous and cost thousands of dollars, but the Intex PureSpa Bubble Therapy Portable Spa is different—not only is its carrying bag the size of a small piece of luggage, it’s inflatable.

In other words, it’s a warm-weather hot tub.

WORLD TRADE CENTER 9/11 MEMORIAL INSTALLED AT RIVERSIDE PARK SEPT. 11 In their proposal to the Boise City Department of Arts and Histor y, Jensen Belts Associates and artist Amber Conger described the concept for the World Trade Center Memorial as “brave souls all connected… like ripples in a pond.”

The $30,000 public artwork was paid for by the Percent for Art program and the Boise Fire Department, and once access to Riverside Park is restored following scheduled Greenbelt maintenance, the public is invited to see the newly completed piece.

The 9/11 memorial has been in the works for months and was created at the behest of the Boise Fire Department to honor emergency responders who died during rescue efforts at the site of the World Trade Center terror attacks on Sept.

11, 2001. The large sculpture features a rough-edged piece of metal suspended within a trio of brushed steel halos, but that chunk of weathered steel is more than it might appear: an I-beam from the original World Trade Center. The process of getting the beam was spearheaded by The Idaho Fallen Firefighter Foundation and Boise Fire Department.

BROTHERS OF THE BALADI, SEPT. 19, NEUROLUX From the leafy, rain-drenched cityscape of Portland, Ore., comes a sound that recalls the blistering deserts of the Middle East. Though membership has changed, the Brothers of the Baladi have been reveling in the artistry of traditional Middle Eastern music while giving it a Western twist for nearly 40 years, picking up dozens of accolades, including a 2008 Grammy nomination.

Performing on instruments like the mizmar (an Egyptian reed wind instrument), oud (a Middle Eastern relative of the lute) and mijwiz (a type of double-pipe), the Brothers produce a hypnotic, exotic form of World Music that defies borders. Literally. The band mixes its grooves with vocals in Arabic, Armenian English, Farsi, French, Spanish and Turkish, and frequently throws in a bit a belly dancing, to boot.

The Brothers of the Baladi not only bring people together on the dance floor but bridge cultures with sound. As the San Luis Obispo, Calif., New Times wrote: “If World Peace is ever going to come, it will be because of the talent and devotion of people like The Brothers of the Baladi.” We’ll say as-salaam-alaikum to that.

SHABAZZ PALACES, SEPT. 25, THE CRUX When British trip-hop musician Tricky released 1995’s Maxinquaye, it was like having to relearn how to hear music. Tricky would follow a gorgeous bit of melody with such a discomfiting tempo that passive listening was nearly impossible.

Seattle-based duo Shabazz Palaces’ music requires much of the same. Ishmael Butler and Tendai Maraire make experimental hip-hop using high-tech instruments, low-tech percussion, and any sound a voice can create; it’s music that has been described as “sci-fi” or “way-out” and it demands attention. Take the duo’s second album Lese Majesty (SubPop, June 2014) for example. The minute you get comfortable, maybe start to sway to Maraire’s hypnotizing hand-drum beats or get lost in Butler’s rapid-fire raps, a sonic bomb goes off and an unexpected aural shift brings you right back to the here-and-now. It’s music that refuses to be ignored.

Ballet Idaho: The doors are open.

NEW BI ED, TMP D FOR P, K FLAY Alexander Graham Bell said when a door closes, another opens, so don’t cry about the closed door or you’ll miss the one opening (something along those lines, anyway). Fortunately, when doors opened at Ballet Idaho, the right people were paying attention.

BI has four new dancers (including former Trey McIntyre Project dancer Elizabeth Keller) slated for the 2014-2015 season and has new faces on the admin side, as well: marketing director Meredith Stead, development manager KC Driscoll and executive director Jenny Weaver.

Weaver grew up in Council and received a B.A. in Business Administration from Boise State University, neither of which seems a natural fit with dance. However, the willowy redhead has a wealth of experience dealing with budgets and grants, and she’s excited to be part of BI as it begins to incorporate more contemporary dance.

Speaking of Keller, when TMP closed its doors as a full-time dance company, many of the dancers and staff moved out of state.

Keller chose to stay in Boise. Working for TMP had given her a strong desire to continue the outreach work that was a big part of TMP’s business model.

“I want to get more involved in the community,” said Keller. “I love Boise and I want to give back to Boise.”

So along with joining BI, she initiated the TMP for Parkinson’s program. While the dance leg of TMP was still in full swing, the company received a grant from the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation, and in April, Keller undertook specialized training in Dance for PD, a trademarked program that teaches professional dancers how to work with Parkinson’s sufferers. Keller is now offering an 11-week session based on the Dance for PD method, in which students will learn jazz, tap, modern, hip-hop and more in ways tailored to help with balance, gait and flexibility, as well as depression and isolation.

“It not only helps with movement, it improves state of mind,” Keller said.

Over the course of his career, he has played with members of Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth, among many others. “That’s one of the dangers about being older—or less younger: You think you know it all, you’ve seen it all,” Watt said. “That’s a very dangerous place to be. And I do everything I can not to get like that.”

That includes working with Pilia and Belfi, who are both accomplished musicians in their own right. In addition to being talented avant-garde composers, Belfi played in the Italian post-rock group Rosolina Mar, and Pilia plays guitar for acclaimed Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traore.

“I think it brings out stuff in me that [with] other situations I’ve been involved in aren’t really there,” Watt said.

The assured, responsive grooves on Canto Secondo bear out the truth of this statement.

Shifting between tempos and genres, Watt’s bass, Pilia’s guitar and Belfi’s drums weave and blend so deftly that it almost sounds as if the instruments are talking to each other.

That rapport calls to mind Watt’s achievements with the Minutemen and also bodes well for ISDM. “I think that’s exactly the idea with Il Sogno del Marinaio,” Watt said. “We’re trying to find our course by experiments, going for it. Trying to make an interesting conversation out of the three spirits.”

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY EXPOS ARIES (March 21-April 19): These horoscopes I write for you aren’t primarily meant to predict the future. They are more about uncovering hidden potentials and desirable possibilities that are stirring below the surface right now. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The old Latin motto Gradu diverso, via una can be translated as either “Continuing on the same road, but with a different stride” or “Going the same way, but changing your pace.” I think this is excellent advice for you, Taurus.

By my reckoning, you are on the correct path. You are headed in the right direction. But you need to shift your approach a bit—not a lot, just a little. You’ve got to make some minor adjustments in the way you flow.

But I don’t think I am wrong. So here’s what I have to say: There is a sense in which the source of your wound is potentially also the source of the “medicine” that will heal the wound. What hurt you could fix you. But you must be careful not to interpret this masochistically. You can’t afford to be too literal. I’m not saying that the source of your pain is trustworthy or has good intentions. Be cagey as you learn how to get the cure you need.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The prestigious New England Journal of Medicine published a study with

a conclusion we might expect to see in a tabloid newspaper or satirical website. It reported that there is a correlation between chocolate consumption and Nobel Prizes. Those countries whose citizens eat more chocolate have also produced an inordinate number of Nobel laureates. So does this mean that chocolate makes you smarter, as some other studies have also suggested? Maybe, the report concluded. Since it is especially important for you to be at the height of your mental powers in the coming weeks, Leo, why not experiment with this possibility?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I rarely waste my time trying to convert the “skeptics” who attack astrology with a hostile zeal that belies their supposed scientific objectivity. They’re often as dogmatic and closed-minded as any fundamentalist religious nut. When I’m in a tricky mood, though, I might tell them about the “Crawford Perspectives,” a highly rated Wall Street investment publication that relies extensively on astrological analysis. Or I might quote the wealthy financier J.P. Morgan, who testified that “Millionaires don’t use astrology; billionaires do.”

That brings us to my main point, Virgo: The astrological omens suggest that the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to put in motion plans to get richer quicker. Take advantage!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When Libra-born Mohandas Gandhi was 19, he moved to London from his native India to study law. Soon he got caught up in the effort to become an English gentleman.

He took elocution lessons and learned to dance. He bought fine clothes and a gold watch-chain.

Each morning he stood before a giant mirror and fussed with his hair and necktie until they were perfect. In retrospect, this phase of his life seems irrelevant.

Years later he was a barefoot rebel leader using nonviolent civil disobedience to help end the British rule of India, often wearing a loincloth and shawl made of fabric he wove himself. With this as your inspiration, Libra, identify aspects of your current life that contribute little to the soul you must eventually become.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): This might be controversial, but I suspect that for now your emphasis shouldn’t be on sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. Instead, your specialties should be hardearned intimacy, altered states that are solely the result of deep introspection, and music that arouses reverence and other sacred emotions. You are entering a phase when crafty power is less important than vigorous receptivity; when success is not nearly as interesting as meaningfulness; when what you already understand is less valuable than what you can imagine and create.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You are entering a phase when you will reap rich rewards by nurturing the health of your favorite posse, ensemble or organization.

How is the group’s collective mental health? Are there any festering rifts? Any apathetic attitudes or weakening resolves? I choose you to be the leader who builds solidarity and cultivates consensus. I ask you to think creatively about how to make sure everyone’s individual goals synergize with the greater good.

Are you familiar with the Arabic word taarradhin? It means a compromise that allows everyone to win—a reconciliation in which no one loses face.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The good news is that America has more trees than it did a hundred years ago. Aggressive efforts to replace the decimated old-growth forests have paid off.

The bad news is that the new forests have a far less diverse selection of tree species than the originals. The fresh batches are often crowded into smaller spaces, so wildfires are more massive and devastating. And because so many of the forests are young, they host a reduced diversity of plant and animal life. All in all, the increased quantity is wonderful; the lower quality not so wonderful. Is there a lesson here for you? I think so. In your upcoming decisions, favor established quality over novel quantity.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If Pope Francis isn’t traveling, he comes out to meet the public in St. Peter’s Square every Wednesday. During one such event last January, he took a few moments to bestow tender attention on a talking parrot that belonged to a male stripper. I foresee a comparable anomaly happening for you in the coming days. A part of you that is wild or outré will be blessed by contact with what’s holy or sublime.

Or maybe a beastly aspect of your nature that doesn’t normally get much respect will receive a divine favor.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “My definition of a devil is a god who has not been recognized,” said mythologist Joseph Campbell. “It is a power in you to which you have not given expression, and you push it back. And then, like all repressed energy, it builds up and becomes dangerous to the position you’re trying to hold.” Do you agree, Pisces?
