***************** Call to Order:​ Teresa Yragui called the meeting to order for Laurie Ahern at 12:06 pm. Introduced new Office Manager, Valerie Hadley and congratulated Meredith Stead in receiving 2019 40 under 40 award.

Approval of the Previous Minutes:​ Kendal Shaber stated that a correction needed to be made and she was in attendance on March 12, 2019. Another correction was that there was a note of Chelan announcing that a goal of 30 new memberships for the drive, but the goal was more than 30. Meredith made a motion to approve the March 12 2019 minutes and Julie seconded the motion. The minutes were approved with unanimity with corrections.

Committee Reports Fundraising Committee (Teresa):​ Spring Drive Fundraiser recap – Kristin Jackson Slides noting amounts: under goal, but December was over so it balances. 370 new members, 277 New sustainers. 72 sustainers increased. Half of those were credit card Umbrella and camp mug were most popular gift.

Higher percentage of gifts in December because they extend web donations. Average gift across the year is $136. Fall drive was smaller with low new sustainers.

Tyson asked if there is research on new members geographical location and Kristin will research that.

Total sustainers were reported at over 11,000. Growing most years, but fell off last year. In 2018 Ada county population grew by 8%, and when asked if that’s about average and it was stated that sustainers grow about 3-5% Discussion of pitch successes and failures led to explanation that negative pitches don’t work and guilt doesn’t provide us with what we’re looking for. Guilt mail pieces work but not on air. There is enough differences in pitches that there are several that work and hard to find statistical model of what works or doesn’t. Longer drives seem to have more success and making sure we are stating what the station is doing. We can do a better job of talking about programming and work with pitch teams to work on that to make sure they are being consistent. Listen to ourselves and improve upon that.

Working on having a page that shows audience/drive information and why we do them, where we at, and why we do three per year, to possibly help with year end appeal.

Team to follow up on process of pitch rework and overhaul of scripts. A complete overhaul hasn’t been done in recent future, but they will pull all scripts and review with staff as well as CAB if there are interested members and several stated they will be interested. Also helpful for members to listen during drives to help make suggestions during this time.

Informing listeners in where the funds are going to, during drive week seems helpful. It was noted that less than 40% take gifts. Nerd shirts were well with younger members and now they have them on the email list if requested in the future.

Nominating Committee (Teresa):​ Nominating Committee – Teresa Yragui Applications of potential members Laura Bond-proposed by Marc Wheeler Provides statistical support for researchers, statistician Leon Smith- proposed by Chris Bragg Leon is well connected in TF county Recruitment of new board members typically happens at different times of the year, but membership has dropped so need new members. Proposed sending out email vote for new members. The new members would be fulfilling existing terms for Jean and Corey and then would discuss being assigned to a next term.

New board members will be informed of term requirements after approval.

Discussed also inviting students to join CAB. Advocacy Committee (Julie): ​ Julie Adams DeFord is co-chairing committee with Vicki. Had a great advocacy meeting where event calendar was created. Want to promote BSPR. Bethany has created a “kit” to take to events. Talking points provided as well for event volunteer. Summary of events by most recent. Lead CAB person will be reaching out for additional support for event. Vicki is concerned about contract approval for Soul Food from BSU vendor contract.

Indemnification and insurance is an issue per Cindy Hall but will work on approval while Vicki works on extension for submittal. Leta suggested to discuss with Soul Food organizers to let them know about issues with contract so they may know for later events.

Meredith asked for support for Hyde Street Fair starting on Friday, September 13. Bethany explained that they will send out sign up to make sure times are all covered. Membership drive is ending that day, but will end in the AM. Tom Michael might be able to assist on that Friday.

Executive Committee (Teresa): ​Corey Cooke leaving board and needs to send official resignation Programming Committee (David): First meeting last week, and verified next meeting on May 15, to come up with charter and to discuss issues that came up during of the meeting. Possible change in Saturday morning lineup. Paul has been explaining how changes are made and suggested others join programming committee to be part. Question about a podcast ad that seemed a little odd and they provided feedback about that and thanked committee and invited others to join.

Strategic Planning updates (Tom Michael): Met in March with Strategic consultant. Sent PDF on April 1, 2019 of CAB ranking with Strategic planning. Ranked goals and cleaned up language and moved up narrative into overviews and sent for review. Paul Ries had a question about Goal 10. Using our own content experts and closing the loop under goals: presenting on things our expertise as well as outside expertise. Remove “Close the Loop” to only use “take Advantage” Kendal likes content aspiration is sharing concerns about fundraising when we have aspirations about growing newsroom because it is all contingent on fundraising. 360k to raise for three programs is a lot. David Lombardi asked about metrics. Tom explained that next FY we will put a finer point on the metrics. That part will come later and be used in departments based on strategic plan. Staff is also going on improvements and challenges facing us. Task force on workplace improvement to make recommendations in the coming months.

Tom will receive recommendation by next meeting from task force.

It was mentioned to find software that would allow departments to show 4 strategic pillars that would be the departments responsibility to show their progress and then that was transparent to board so they know how things are tracked and we can investigate, perhaps a yearly report on how well we’ve progressed on the strategic plan and perhaps periodic reports from staff to get a picture of how Strategic plan is being implemented. Tom shared dashboard metrics on revenue categories.

Tom asked to share financials and how CAB would like those shared. Pie charts showing increase of revenue of 7%.

Expenditures showing differences based on payments of specific expenditures.

Presentation on Boise State Public Radio Music - Paul Stribling & Erik Jones Historical and performance data as well as listener data. KBSU, entered documentary of 40 years. Music is in McCall, Cascade, Treasure Valley and some in Magic Valley. Locally based programming as well as national programming. All varieties.

Idaho Music and Idaho. (Financials found on slides) 1976 first transmitted at BSU by a student 1977 officially licensed. 1986 BSU decided to establish NPR affiliate instead of just student. Moved several times and relationship with BSU. Taken most of the talk radio off music and placed on news station. 1992 was last programming change to add echoes weeknights and added Twin Falls. Classical on weekdays, non-classical weeknights. 1 in 3 listeners listen to music but they’ve decided that there is a better network support but didn’t ask directly whether they listen to music or news? Can question be changed to “both” instead of determining either/or. Nielsen reports provides some data, but not absolute.

Heritage shows as well as classical music both perform well with audience and fundraiser. Classical is a “dying” format, but our audience is still good and we do need improvement but we are doing better than other classical stations around the country. We are working on increased data from web streaming.

Listening data shared from slides by Erik “performance” slide Listeners on music tune in for a longer period of time Average Quarter Hour Listeners (Cume Audience is 31,720 weekly) Showed Cume higher in FA 2017, but has declined and news station is also declining.

“Book” registers listeners with Nielsen and they report to the book of where listeners listen. Streaming is not tracked by book.

Station Update: New Reporter for South-Central Idaho,Rachel Reports: Report for America (supplied $20k) selected us to have a newsroom in TF to serve Magic Valley. We need to raise rest of funds in order to cover towards a 60K goal for Rachel in SC Idaho. We have $5K as of now and matches were added this AM due. Rachel is early career reporter and has interned at NPR and graduated from Vermont. May go further East if there is something “big” happening. Cemented our partnership with CSI in Twin Falls. English professor at CSI will be retiring and Rachel getting her office. Not great membership in TF. Chelan is really looking forward to a bigger presence in TF. Need donation and also need everyone to share campaign. Changed some wording and changed suggested amount to $25 instead of $10 and donations went up immediately. 33 days remaining in the campaign. She is arriving on 6/17 and there are on-air spots for her. MV and Sun Valley is receiving more emails. For membership drive. Tom also mentioned Rotary Club meeting in Twin and Chris Bragg

is a local support and presence. Chelan explained fundraising in ketchum on 6/20 that Rachel will be attending. If there are more ideas, share with fundraising. Kristin requested more support for outreach. Rachel is currently in New Hampshire but will only be here for June 3&4 and then not back until 6/17. It’s a tough sell to get people excited when that person isn’t in the community yet. Teresa asked Chris to give any information about TF reception. Lots of campus spreading of the information. Lots of listeners on campus, but will have more impact once she’s there. Lou had people calling about her and then let Chelan know. Tom also recognized Jeff Fox (CSI president) and Chris’ work. Long term investments being looked at for larger geographic area, team is excited for more news media in that area. Laurie and Paul also supplying match is incredible. Underwriter support is increasing.

Conflicts for July meeting date (Laurie​) Lack new business. Elections of new board members can be done by email vote and asked any committees for reports and can send those minutes out by email. In September we’ll be welcoming new CAB members. David Motioned for cancelled meeting and Tyson seconded Tom also encouraged more review of Strategic Plan.

Good of the Order(Laurie): ​Paul Ries just returned from Mongolia for an investigative trip will return in September for more work. Reported that air quality is terrible as well as corruption and the younger generation is trying to fix. Leta suggested we do story with Idaho Matters.

Conclusion:​ Teresa adjourned the meeting at 1:30 pm.
