Community Advisory Board Meeting Tuesday, October 24, 2017 – 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

***************** Call to Order – Tom Michael Tom Michael called the Boise State Public Radio (BSPR) Community Advisory Board (CAB) meeting to order at 12:12 p.m.

Approval of July 2017 Meeting Minutes – Tom Michael Laurie Ahern made a motion to approve the minutes; seconded by Shihkar Sarin. The motion was passed unanimously.

Board Leadership – Tom Michael • Confirm new Chair (David Lombardi) and Vice Chair (Vicki Lawson) for one year terms. Mitzi moved to approve this change in board leadership (which was proposed at the July 24, 2017 meeting), and Shakhar seconded. The motion passed.

• Tom also thanked 4 members who had served on the CAB for 6 years and were attending their last meetingEmily Walton (not in attendance), Maria Trebby, Cornelia Sprung, and Kristin Mathews.

New Staff Introduction- Tom Michael • Tom introduced Aimee Moran, the new Development Director. Aimee started with BSPR on October 23, 2017, and she shared a bit about her history and what appealed to her about working with BSPR. General Manager Update – Tom Michael • Tom gave a brief financial update, and discussed the programming changes that took effect in early October (namely, ending Car Talk reruns and acquiring Planet Money/How I Built This, Hidden Brain, and It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders.

Tom noted that Paul Stribling is happy to take feedback via call or email, and a discussion ensued about more personal responses rather than “canned email” responses.

The Nielsen ratings show ~110,000 weekly cume between KBSX and KBSU, and that our listeners “share stations” most with The River when they are usually KBSX listeners, and KBSX when they are usually KBSU listeners.

We will be relying on resources from Station Resource Group (SRG) and their Classical Music Rising research to change how we promote and brand KBSU- this will include some cross promotion.

An update on the City Center Plaza space: Boise State project managers are working on getting a new lower architecture bid, which pushes the project a little further back into 2018.

Hearken software (listener-generated reporting) is now Wanna Know Idaho, and the next story is related to the F35s at Gowen Field.

Podcast update: There will likely be one more episode of Speaking of Serial to wrap up the Bowe Bergdahl story.

Lastly, the 500th guest on Reader’s Corner is coming up, as is the KBSU 40th Open House celebration. o

Events • The Cinder event with Radio Boise was a success and we hope to do more events like that in the future.

• KBSU 40th Open House event is on Saturday, November 4 from 10 am until 2 pm.

• We’ll keep the CAB updated on the Idaho Botanical Gardens winter event.

New Board Chair Discussion- David Lombardi • David inquired about the noon meetings- the consensus was that they are working out well.

• He shared his excitement at revitalizing the CAB and shared his vision of the CAB getting more involved in a substantive way.

• David then started a discussion about CAB committees and subcommittees. Recently discussed are the Nominating, Fundraising, and Governance committees. o The next meeting is January 23rd: everyone should come with an idea of what committees they’d like to partake.

Good of the Order – David Lombardi • David asked everyone to think between now and January about what the CAB would like to do, and what they would like to see happen. His suggestion is diversification of CAB members to include a more conservative perspective to the Board. One way to do this is through the Nominating committee.

• He also suggested reforming the Governance and Fundraising committees. o Leta asked about involvement with Storyfort and Treefort involvement (BSPR is working on securing an NPR personality) and Laurie mentioned the voices behind the Terrestrial podcast. o Teresa suggested a mini-planning session to determine roles within the CAB boundaries. o David followed up suggesting an Executive Committee consisting of the Chair, Vice Chair, and an at large CAB member elected by the full board in January.  Between the meeting and the next one, David and Vicki will meet with Teresa Yragui and Paul Ries as an ad hoc Executive Committee.

• Others mentioned the need for a student member, a 2018 strategic planning session, and the laying out of longer term plans.

Adjourn Dede moved to dismiss the meeting at 1:18 pm, Teresa provided the second, and the motion passed unanimously.
