Community Advisory Board Meeting Thursday, October 9, 2014 – 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

***************** Call to Order – Mary Reiman Chair, Mary Reiman, called the Boise State Public Radio Community Advisory Board (CAB) meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. This will be Mary’s last meeting as Chair of the Board.

Marcel Pacatte was introduced to the group, he is the station’s News Internship Coordinator and he also teaches in the Communications Department.

Emilie Ritter Saunders was also introduced to the group. She is the station’s Digital Content Coordinator and will be teaching the social media workshop.

Vicki let the group know that she has been campaigning to raise money in the Stanley area to get some additional equipment. So far there has been a really good response.

Approval of June 2014 Meeting Minutes – Mary Reiman Paula Brown Sinclair and Azam Houle were both in attendance at the June meeting and their attendance was not reflected on the minutes. Tara will update the minutes to reflect their attendance.

Motion: Dede Ryan made a motion to approve the minutes with the noted corrections; seconded by Kristin Mathews. The motion was passed unanimously.

Election of CAB Officers – Mary Reiman Emily Walton was nominated as Chair and Shelby Zepeda was nominated as Vice-Chair. Positions will take effect at December’s meeting.

Motion: Susan Giannettino moved to accept Emily Walton as Chair of the Community Advisory Board and Shelby Zepeda as Vice-Chair; seconded by Marilyn Shuler. The motion was passed unanimously.

Sub Committee Reports – Mary Reiman Nominations (Emily Walton): Shelby will be in charge of this group going forward as she is now the ViceChair. The committee includes: Camille, Shelby, Maria, Cornelia, Randi, and Shikhar.

Paula would like to be sure a recruitment effort is made in the Magic Valley for future CAB members. It would also be nice to have more than one individual from that area. John met with the CSI President and he suggested CSI’s Director of Outreach as a possible member. John will pass on the applicant paperwork. Vicki knows several folks that she would also recommend to the board.

The group would like to be sure to keep the training session and tour time for new members. An email will be going out shortly to the group requesting nominees.

Advocacy (Emily Walton): We have now tried twice to hold an event for local and city officials here at the station and there has not been a good response. Emily and John will need to have more individual meetings with elected city council members to have a casual conversation about BSPR. We will just have to work harder to make this happen. We do have a proclamation from the Mayor available to us when we want it.

We are not talking to legislators because it is not good strategically at this time.

Programming (Kristin Mathews): The group met this month to discuss hosting a trivia night to raise awareness in the community about BSPR. There were lots of great ideas that could be used. The first event likely would not be a fundraiser, unless an easy and low cost way of doing it was determined. The group is looking at a February, March, or April (possibly April Fool’s) date range for the event.

There were a lot of ideas and questions: do we partner with another event? Who would MC – possibly a radio personality/local celebrity? When? How would it be set up? Individuals or teams? Who is our target audience? Question format?

Next steps: The group will be doing some research into local trivia events and meet again to discuss further at the end of October/beginning of November.

The Programming Committee was encouraged to reach out to the rest of the board for assistance with this event. As well as reach out to station and utilize resources for marketing on the web and on-air.

Sustainability (Kelly Palmer): Kelly thanked the following members for their assistance: • Maria Trebby for her assistance with cultivating donors as well as making thank you calls to donors. If anyone is interested in helping, please do.

David Lombardi, Marilyn Shuler, and Mary Reiman for speaking to guests at our grand opening event.

Cornelia Sprung for helping prepare a letter of inquiry to the Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation.

Vicki Lawson for helping to raise funds in Stanley for new equipment..

Kelly also wanted to pass on the idea of hosting a listening party to the group. The station would provide you with a recording from one of your favorite shows so that you could host an in-home party with friends and have a salon-style discussion regarding the programming and share your passion for public radio. The station would provide the recording and take-away materials for your guests.

The group really liked the idea and several suggestions were made: • Possibly get a video of a host doing the recording • The House on Loon Lake (This American Life) • Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me • Terry Gross • Ask Me Another Kristin offered to look for an example of a house party kit she may have and provide it to Kelly. Kelly will work with Paul to get the recordings and put together a tool kit for hosts and have Adrienne Zachary help disseminate information to those interested in hosting.

If anyone has further recording ideas, please email them to Kelly at kellypalmer1@boisestate.edu. Kelly will provide an update regarding this at the December meeting.

Marketing (Camille Oldenburg): The CAB members are major communicators in the community, please engage in social media and tell people about the station and what we offer. The committee has asked the station’s Digital Content Coordinator, Emilie Ritter Saunders, to provide the group with a social media overview.

Social Media Workshop – Emilie Ritter Saunders Emilie presented a PowerPoint to the group going over the basics of Facebook and Twitter. She provided everyone with a list of all Boise State Public Radio social media handles.

Please share our content in whatever medium you are most comfortable with; the more people who share, the more our reach grows.

Station report – John Hess Everything is going good. The fund drive just finished this evening and we are very close to our stated goal of $165K. Major kudos goes out to our entire news staff for their coverage on the gay marriage court decisions.

We will also be carrying six debates with IPTV starting this week. Emilie is working with The Statesman on a mental health series that will include a community engagement event on October 29, here in the Osher classroom here in the Yanke building.
