This guide has something for everyone. I’m confident all ages can find an activity to participate in that is sure to provide a needed reprieve from the hectic world we live in. We all need healthy down time and what better way to achieve that than experiencing a safe, affordable and accessible program or activity provided by your Parks and Recreation Department. I’m proud to say that our team has answered the call time and again during some of the most difficult years we’ve ever experienced. Our community looks to us to serve and lead with wholesome programming and safe access to facilities like parks, our beloved Boise River Greenbelt, and our cherished Ridge to Rivers Trail System. We will continue to cherish these incredible amenities and it is truly an honor to provide these services for everyone who calls Boise home!

ART ADVENTURES AGES 2.5-5 An adventure in art that is just too much fun for little ones! This special funfilled program lets imaginations run wild with inventive projects each week using different art materials.

AGES 2-4 + ADULT Join your child for an exploration in nature! We will go on a short hike and participate in a craft, game or other activity at our outdoor facility. Children should dress for the weather and be accompanied by an adult.

Fee includes child and parent/guardian.

AGES 3.5-5 This 3-hour drop-off preschool session will focus on seasonal components of gardening that encourage exploration, creativity and healthy eating. Activities could include garden tours, craft projects, science experiments, story time, bug catching and more. No matter the weather, there’s fun to be had outside in the garden. Sign up per month to let you child dive deep into garden topics and grow with us!

GREEN BEANS AFTERSCHOOL AGES 5-7 Our month-long afterschool sessions allow youth to explore the garden from the height of harvest season through preparing for the long winter. We will focus on seasonal components of gardening that encourage curiosity, creativity and healthy eating.

AGES 3.5-5 Children will discover nature in these classes, which include short hikes, games, stories, crafts and hands-on experiences both inside and outside. Each month will feature the

AGES 3.5-5 Our preschool program will immerse your child in the outdoors (FLC) or garden (BUGS) environment. Children will become comfortable in nature while learning environmental stewardship principles. Preschoolers will explore the surrounding ecosystem, learn through a STEM-based curriculum, and develop cognitive, motor and emotional skills. We will spend most of our class time outside and will meet no matter the weather. Please send your child with a snack, a water bottle and appropriate outdoor clothing.

This program runs for the length of the school year through May 20, 2022. Enrolling into this activity is a commitment to attend through May. Registering serves as the first month’s payment which will be billed monthly at the $240.00 rate.

AGES 5-6 T he Homeschool Zoo program series provides a unique learning experience for students schooled at home. The course consists of classroom discussion, laboratory activities, animal encounters and specialized zoo tours. Classes will align with Idaho State Science Standards and focus on topics and principles based on grade level. Themes will emphasize looking at animal groups and taxonomy, adaptations, habitats and ecology.

ICE HOCKEY HOCKEY LEARN TO PLAY 1 (H1 – Beginner) AGES 4-7 Players will learn how to sit on ice and stand up, proper stance, march forward, forward two-foot glide, dip, squat, scooter pushes, T-push, forward swizzles, snowplow stop and backwards skating. No sticks allowed.

HOCKEY LEARN TO PLAY 2 (H2) (Prerequisite H1) AGES 4-7 Players will learn backward stance, skating forward using full strides, forward one-foot glides, backward hustle, backward swizzles, glide turns and moving snowplow stops.

HOCKEY LEARN TO PLAY 3 (H3) (Prerequisite H2)

HOCKEY LEARN TO PLAY 4 (H4) (Prerequisite H3) AGES 4-7 Class includes on-ice coaching instruction and scrimmages.

GOAL!

Hockey Learn to Play An annual membership from USA HOCKEY is required for all participants. Go to USAHockey. com to purchase your annual USA HOCKEY Membership before enrolling.

AGES 4-7 Players will learn one-foot snowplow stop, introduce hips with ¼ turn twist to hockey stop, full strides using 45-degree V-Push, shuffle stride, backwards hustle, backward C-Cuts, power pushes, backward outside edge glide, forward C-Cuts, C-push glide, forward outside & inside edges, gliding 2 foot turn and lateral crossover march. Classes will be structured following USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) Program.

IIW will provide rental equipment at no additional charge. Full equipment is required for Hockey Learn to Play. Helmet & sticks must be provided by skater.

The focus and goal of the Hockey Learn to Play curriculum is to teach beginner hockey players the fundamentals of skating. It is important for these developing players to become comfortable on the ice, learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, use of edges and how to hold a stick before moving into a 6U or 8U full hockey curriculum. Players need to be able to participate in class independently from parent. Classes will be structured following USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) Program.

Recognized by Learn to Skate USA as a top program in the country, Idaho IceWorld’s Learn to Skate program provides a fun and structured way for skaters to be physically active and improve their skills under the professional eyes of certified instructors.

All students of Idaho IceWorld’s Learn to Skate program must be current members of our governing body, Learn to Skate USA. With your annual $16 membership, you will receive access to loads of information, secondary accident insurance and be able to participate in lessons, performances and competitions associated with Learn to Skate USA. AGES 5+ This adaptive recreation program is designed to give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to develop their ice-skating skills. Students will receive instruction based upon their individual needs and goals. Some adaptive equipment is available for use at no extra cost. SPUDS AND TATER TOTS (Parent Participation Required) AGES 2-3 On ice parent/adult participation is REQUIRED! Designed for children ages 2-3 and their accompanying adult. Basic skating skills will be taught to the children while allowing adults to offer support and security. Both adults and children are required to wear ice skates.

SNOWPLOW SAM 1 (Beginners) AGES 4-6 Young skaters will learn how to sit and stand up with their skates on both on and off the ice. They will master marching in place, marching forward, going from marching to a two-foot glide and dipping in place.

GOLF SPRING BREAK CAMP AGES 7-15 This golf camp will focus on all aspects of the golf game and teach junior golfers how to play a round of golf on their own. All skill levels are welcome to participate. The daily schedule will allow for practice at the driving range and play on the course, plus breaks for movies and down-time. Participants are responsible for their lunch each day, and should dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

GLASS MOSAICS

Improve both drawing and observation skills by learning about the fundamentals of line, shape, value, perspective and proportion. This is a fun, low pressure and relaxing class. No experience or drawing ability is required!

This class will cover the basics of creating mosaics in glass; glass types, tools for cutting glass, and other materials used in the medium as well mosaic styles and history, design, rendering/ cutting, and grout/finishing. Each student will create a wonderful glass mosaic piece.

PAINTING ACRYLIC – All Levels

Explore drawing methods and materials such as brushes, ink washes, charcoal, pen and a variety of color mediums such as pastels and colored pencils. All materials provided.

DRAWING – Spring Botanical Learn the skills and classical approaches used by illustrators to create botanical drawings of plant specimens. Each week we’ll explore a different theme such “through the microscope” or “crosssection of a fruit” and complete at least one drawing each class. All materials provided.

ENAMELING – Beginning Vitreous enameling is an ancient art dating back to 13th century, B.C. Students will explore a variety of techniques for fusing glass to metal to create and fabricate small artworks of exquisite beauty, including earrings and pendants. All materials provided.

ENAMELING – Open Studio The enameling open studio gives experienced people the opportunity to work on projects of their own design, following their own interests.

Enameling teacher will be on hand to set up the studio, answer questions and assist students 26

as needed. Students must purchase their own enamels. Group orders of supplies will be made and a complete supply kit is available for $30.

Beginning students will learn the basics of acrylic painting including techniques of color, composition, texture and layering, while intermediate/advanced students will refine their skills in these areas. A variety of styles and subject matter such as still-life, landscape, portrait and abstraction will be explored.

PAINTING ACRYLIC/OIL/ WATERCOLOR – Level II Designed for painters who have previously taken an oil, acrylic or watercolor painting course. A variety of styles in your medium will be explored and the instructor will be available to assist with students’ chosen subjects and paintings recommended for the group.

Horticulture Series

FRUIT TREE PRUNING Knowing how and when to prune for fruit is much different than pruning an ornamental tree.

If you have a fruit tree, this is the class for you!

GRAPE GROWING Come learn about growing grapes in Idaho.

Class will cover everything from planting, pruning and harvesting grapes, to how to train grape vines and handle the challenges of insects and diseases. Grape vines can be a valuable addition to your homestead or a great backyard hobby with delicious results.

LANDSCAPE This class will provide background on residential landscape design considerations, including site planning, proper plant placement, hydrozones and low-water use landscaping.

LAURA MOORE CUNNINGHAM CITY ARBORETUM TOUR Come tour the nursery and see where the city grows its trees. During the tour, we will look at basic nursery production, discuss species identification and learn about characteristics of small trees. Next we’ll walk over to the Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park and look at mature specimens. We will be walking on uneven surfaces which may be potentially dusty or muddy depending on the spring weather.

Please wear appropriate shoes and bring a water bottle if the weather is warm. This class is free. Registration is required.

This class will provide an overview of the most important topics related to growing and maintaining a beautiful lawn. We’ll address troubleshooting common turf problem in our region, and you’ll learn how to use your irrigation system to efficiently water your garden and landscaping in our dry Idaho climate. We’ll also cover sprinkler maintenance and design, with time for a Q&A session.

ORGANIC GARDENING Get ready for the growing season with Boise Urban Garden School’s (BUGS) Organic Gardening Class. You’ll learn the basics of organic gardening and leave knowing how to grow a successful garden, and how you can enjoy the health and personal benefits of cultivating your own food. Topics will include garden planning, plant selection and care, water, and weed and pest management.

This class will address more than just cutting off branches. Incorrect pruning can cause serious problems for your trees. Learn the correct way to make a pruning cut, the tree’s response to the cuts and how to prune for the long-term health and beauty of your trees.

Caring for roses is a year ‘round job. Class will cover pruning techniques and how to treat some of the most common pests in roses, including Bacterial Cane Blight.

Did you know that the Boise Front is also special for its diversity of rare unusual and even recently discovered wildflowers? We will go on a photographic journey to explore the floristic treasures of the Boise Front, from Bonneville Point to Mores Mountain to Spring Valley, growing in a diversity of unique habitats.

Learn about insects and diseases that affect our trees and about the most common problems people create by incorrect cultural practices.

Learn to identify the problems and get suggestions on how to correct them.

TREE SELECTION AND PLANTING Planting incorrectly is one of the most common reasons for tree failure. Unfortunately, sometimes the problem isn’t evident for 10 or more years. Once you’ve chosen the perfect tree for your area, learn the correct way to plant (or what to look for when someone else plants) to ensure the tree’s long-term success.

TREE BIOLOGY Get the dirt on soil and plant interactions. Learn the basics of caring for the soil, as well as basic plant structures. You’ll walk away with an understanding of how to manage soil and proper tree care for healthier, longer-living trees.

Adult performing arts is an ongoing learning experience helping to enhance strength, flexibility and coordination all while having a tremendous amount of fun in a friendly environment! Currently we do not plan to offer a Spring Dance Recital.

BALLET – Beginner This class is for those who have always dreamed of learning ballet but have never had the chance. This unique class will give you the opportunity to enter the world of classical ballet for the first time and from the most basic level.

No special clothing required, just come ready to move and dressed comfortably.

BARRE EXERCISE Barre is a fun and empowering class set to great music. The ballet barre is used to sculpt the lower body, abs and for flexibility training.

In this class we will use full body exercises, light weights and other props. There are modifications and challenges for all levels.

FLAMENCO Class time will be spent learning basic steps, body positioning, and the flow of arm/hand movement. As class progresses, we will begin CLASS (18+) BALLET – Beginner

Social Partner Dancing Boise Parks and Recreation is proud to continue partnering with Heirloom Dance Studio. Joel and Stephanie bring 20+ years of Social Partner dancing and instruction, their signature style and method will get you movin’ and groovin’ in no time. Whether you’re headed to a wedding or out on the town, these classes will give you the edge you need to feel confident on the dance floor. Must register with a partner. If you are interested in partner dancing but don’t know where to start, this is the perfect class for you. Each week we will learn a new dance including the Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango, Cha Cha and East Coast Swing. Must register with a partner.

Salsa is the iconic Latin dance. Danced and performed all around the world, it’s one of the most recognized social dances of all time. We will learn basic Lead and Follow technique, beginner combos and short routines to help each student transition between moves.

COUNTRY SWING

SWING LINDY HOP – Beginner

Country Swing is a great place to start learning partner dancing. The patterns are easy to pick up, and in no time at all students will be able to jump onto the dance floor with confidence! No experience necessary.

This dance was created in the late 1920s as a variation on the Charleston. The Lindy Hop was danced to the Big Bands of the 30s and 40s.

LINE DANCE Learn some of the most popular and common line dances that are great for weddings, parties, or just a night out. Line dances will include but are not limited to Boot Scootin’ Boogie, The Hustle, Electric Slide, Footloose and more. The dances will be easily broken down so that no previous experience or partner is needed.

This is for you! With a light cardio warm up, we use strength training to tone your body with resistance bands, light weights and body weights.

Yoga improves flexibility, strength and balance.

As part of this practice, one builds awareness and the ability to relax. Students need to bring a mat and dense blanket. Beginners are welcome.

ON-SITE SHOPPING The center features a craft boutique offering one-of-a-kind items that are made locally by people age 50 and older. There is also a community thrift store on site where donations of new and slightly used items are always welcome. Proceeds from the thrift store help provide programs and services for seniors. Both stores are open 10AM-2PM Tuesday-Thursday.

DONATIONS We rely on monetary donations so that we can offer unique and creative programming and scholarships to older adults who have financial difficulties. This evidence-based program from Stanford University is designed for people living with or taking care of someone with diabetes.

Participants learn ways to live a healthy life with a chronic condition. The workshop meets once a week for six weeks and covers topics such as symptoms of diabetes, healthy ways to manage high and low blood sugars, working effectively with health care providers, stress-reduction techniques, and the importance of nutrition, diet and exercise. The workshop is FREE and at the end, each participant receives a copy of the “Living Well with Chronic Diseases” book and a relaxation CD to take home. Space is limited.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Boise Parks and Recreation offers financial scholarships to qualified youth, seniors and adults with disabilities. To find out if you qualify to receive a scholarship, which will help pay for a class or activity, apply in advance at Fort Boise Community Center.

DANCE ABILITY

AGES 15+ This is the perfect class for participants with disabilities to explore several different forms of art ranging from pottery, drawing, painting and much more! The fee includes instruction and supplies.

AGES 12+ This class will explore various styles of dancing, rhythm and music. Students will learn to increase their strength, flexibility and coordination through dance.

ADAPTIVE YOGA AGES 15+ Yoga helps to improve flexibility, strength and balance and provides an opportunity to work on body awareness and the ability to relax. This class is designed for individuals who have disabilities and our instructor is great at adapting the yoga poses for people of all abilities.

AGES 15+ Join our fitness class and work on stretching, band workouts and aerobic activity. This is a great opportunity to get fit in a supportive and fun environment. Classes are structured for different levels of ability.

The 4PM class will focus on more advanced techniques and students must be able to follow two-step directions.

AGES 15+ Join us for a leisurely walk in the park. The club is designed for individuals with disabilities who enjoy being outdoors, getting exercise and who can stay with the group. The club will be held rain or shine.

ONE-DAY ACTIVITIES BIKE FAIR - Adaptive ALL AGES Try out a variety of adaptive cycles at our bike fair! You will have the opportunity to try upright and recumbent hand cycles, trikes, recumbent trikes, tandem bikes and trikes. This is a great time to learn about adaptive cycles and discover what type works for you. Preregistration is not required, drop in between 10AM-2PM to try the cycles. **All ages and ability levels are welcome; youth under age 18 must attend with an adult.

BIKE RIDE AGES 16+ Join us for an hour-long adaptive bike ride along the beautiful Boise Greenbelt.

Bring your own bike or use one of our adaptive hand cycles, adult tricycles, recumbent tricycles or tandem bikes (call 208-608-7681 for bike availability and reservations). These rides are designed as supervised group rides and are not a bike riding lessons; however, proper trail manners and safety will be addressed.

Participants must be able to follow directions and stay with the group or attend with someone who can assist. *Youth under 16 are welcome but must attend with an adult.

BIKE RIDE & PICNIC AGES 16+ This program is very similar to the Adaptive Bike Ride (see previous description), however, at this activity we will have a picnic after the ride.

DINNER & A MOVIE AGES 18+ Enjoy dinner and a movie during these fun Friday evenings! We will have takeout dinner and then watch a movie (rated G-PG13) at the community center.

FOOTHILLS HIKE & DINNER AGES 16+ Socialize over dinner and then go on a relaxed hike in the beautiful Boise Foothills.

GAME NIGHT & DINNER

AGES 16+ Try out the fun and relaxed sport of Bocce in the park! We will also eat takeout dinner in the park.

AGES 16+ It’s game night with AdVenture! We will play board games, BINGO, floor curling and much more. We will also eat pizza and make ice cream sundaes! Please be sure to register in advance; this is not drop-in program.

N E W SCIENCE NIGHT & DINNER AGES 16+ We have a super fun STEM night planned! We will create some cool science projects and socialize over takeout dinner.

ZOO & DINNER AGES 16+ Check out the cool animals at Zoo Boise! After our trip to the zoo, we will socialize over dinner in the park. Participants must be able to stay with the group.

MUSIC NIGHT & DINNER AGES 18+ We have a super fun music night planned! We will make our own instruments, play drums and other percussion instruments, sing along to music videos and socialize over takeout dinner.

The Banquet and Board Rooms offer an intimate setting for any occasion. Both rooms open to a balcony overlooking Quail Hollow Golf Course and panoramic views of the Boise Foothills.

REFUND & CANCELLATION POLICY

We depend on your enrollment for a successful class! Please plan your schedule carefully.

Classes which do not meet minimum enrollment are subject to cancellation. In the case of a cancellation, please contact Fort Boise Community Center at 208-608-7680. Refunds are issued: • In full if the class or program is canceled.

• Minus a $15 processing fee if you cancel at least ten calender days before the starting date of the class. Choose from these three options: 1. Transfer to another class 2. Credit your account 3. Receive a refund, allow 3-4 weeks for processing.

Refunds and transfers are not issued: • When requested less than ten calender days before the starting date of the class.

• If the fee paid is less than the $15 processing fee.

• For team fees after registration ends.

• For all team sports player fees.

WHO IS A RESIDENT?

Boise residents live within the city limits and pay Boise city taxes. The boundaries that the U.S. Post Office uses and those that determine the city limits are not the same. NON-RESIDENT POLICY

Boise residents directly contribute to the operations of Boise Parks and Recreation Department’s programs and services by payment of their property taxes. The Fair-Share Policy (Non-resident Fee) allocates an additional fee to non-resident users so that they also contribute, on an equitable basis, to the overall financing of the department’s operations.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

• You can help ensure all young people in Boise have the same opportunity to participate by adding $1, $5, $10 or more to your registration payment. Donations are tax deductible.
