As adults, it can be easy to settle into a familiar routine and forget the rush of learning new things and flexing your skills. Idahoans share no shortage of interests, so there is always something to learn, be it a hobby, college course, or cool new skill. Boise does its part to cultivate a continuous desire for learning—here are just a few of the ways you can participate.
Grab a book
Have you been to the Boise Public Library (you may know the downtown branch as Library!) lately? DVDs, CDs, and video games and to use its free Wi-Fi and computers. While you’re there, explore a variety of programs and events for all ages, including favorites such as storytime, read to a therapy dog, and book club. Take part in the Ultimate Book Nerd reading challenge to get out of your comfort zone and broaden your knowledge base (which could come in handy at pub trivia). There is even a seed library at one location.
“The Library truly is a place for everyone in our community. Whatever your age, interest, or background, we are here to support your pursuit of knowledge, opportunity, creativity, and fun,” says Jessica Dorr, Boise Public Library director.
You can also enjoy some of the Library’s resources from the comfort of your home. Stream videos, make art projects, learn a new language, and much more by accessing over 100 digital applications and resources using your library card. Browse the Library’s collection on your phone
using Ida – An Idaho Library app, and check out ebooks and audiobooks on the Libby app.
Become a lifelong learner
For all the times you ever wanted to learn a new hobby or skill but didn’t even know where to start, chances are good that Boise School District’s Community Education program has a class for it. They offer more than 250 courses that cover an array of topics, led by volunteer instructors, which keeps tuition very affordable. Most classes are geared toward adults, but there are some specifically designed for youth and teens.
“We are a nonprofit organization run through the Boise School District, offering lifetime learning opportunities to our community,” says Erin Sullivan of Community Education. “We pride ourselves on being one of the great things to do in Boise! Whether people are longtime residents or new to the area, we offer a wide variety of classes to appeal to everyone.”
