PRIDE IN THE PARK June 26th and 27th, 2021

Pride in the Park is set to become one of the first live concert events returning to Chicago this summer and will return for a second year with a fun-filled musical lineup. “It’s been more than a year, but this summer, live music and meaningful, safe ways to connect with our chosen friends and family is coming back. We are very pleased to meet state guidelines and working with the City of Chicago and Chicago Park District to make this event happen” said Dusty Carpenter, President and lead organizer of Pride in the Park Chicago.

Adding to up the lineup is Australian singer-songwriter Betty Who, who performed at Pride In The Park’s inaugural edition. Other noteworthy artists include DJ Tracy Young, the first woman ever to receive a Grammy in the remix category, Alyssa Edwards of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and legendary Chicago DJ and deep house producer Derrick Carter. “To say we are excited is an understatement,” said Dusty Carpenter, President and lead organizer of Pride in the Park. “We have legendary artists, with 12 Grammys, diverse Allies and Queer icons that are going to simply bring the house down.” In addition to the main stage, full entertainment schedule is forthcoming, CircuitMOM Productions will command their own on-site performances, including drag kings and queens and the worldfamous DJs and that signature electric house music that only CircuitMOM can deliver.

Pride In The Park first debuted as a one-day event in 2019. It will now return as a limited capacity, two-day ticketed fest on Saturday, June 26th and Sunday, June 27th at the historic Grant Park, home to Lollapalooza. The event will feature a wide array of musical artists, with The Queen of Funk and ten-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan headlining. Electronic music lovers should be drawn in by the other headliners, DJ producer superstars Gryffin and Tiësto.

ASK CHAD

Business Marketing Q&A

Dear Chad, What are the three main components for a new business owner to have setup? From, Johnny

Hello Johnny, Specifically from a branding and marketing standpoint you must first know your customer/ client. It is imperative to your success to know their every need, want and expectation when shopping to either buy product or hire a company for a service. Many companies do not have a clear picture as to who their primary targeted demographic is or what they want. Second you must also look at your business as someone that has no clue as to who you are, what you provide or what you can do. You can’t assume your client has done their homework so you have to do whatever you can in order to paint a clear picture. Often times as business owners we make the assumption that our customers/clients knows as much as we do about the services or products we provide. Don’t make this assumption it can be detrimental to your businesses continued success. The third step is to ensure you have strong branding in place starting with a logo and marketing to back it up. No different than you would be when selecting a new service or product. If you feel there isn’t legitimacy to the company or brand you are looking at, you have to assume your business is being viewed in the same way. Just because you know you offer a good product or service does't mean this will translate to your potential client/customer. Dear Chad, I’m starting a new fashion line. How do I get new brand exposure in an effective way to the people that I need to target? From, Marcellus Hello Marcellus, I would utilize recommend e-commerce so that you can effectively be seen by a much larger audience right off of the bat. This can be much more cost-effective rather than trying to get into a physical location to start. A lot of brands are actually switching their full sales model to online. Ensure you do your research on your primary demographic so you know who you are market to. Once you have your online store setup start with PPC and Social media advertising to gain traction.

You are in control of you daily spend and can quickly see if your efforts are converting to sales. This is a quick way to gain traction at a fairly low spend. Just be careful to set a realistic budget and give it some time. Dear Chad, What are the do’s and don’ts for a new company. From, Laurie Hello Laurie, No matter the industry it is important to plan for the worst while being cognizant of what being successful looks like. Have realistic goals in place to ensure you have long-term success. Don’t put yourself in a position that is unrealistic to succeed. More times than not start-up companies do not do their research and overspend in ways that are in no way beneficial for their company to expand. There will always be ups and downs but you can control how much of this happens within a respectable amount of time. Plan ahead and if you can afford it, hire a marketing company to help you come up with a realistic budget that us sustainable for you. A lot of agency will provide complimentary consultations and incentives for new clients. The worst thing is starting out by spending too much money then having to pull back or stop all together because you didn’t plan accordingly. This can be a huge waste of money and quite detrimental to your companies ongoing success. Chad Brittian is an experienced industry professional and CEO of NVS Design, Inc. THE ART OF BANKSY

An Exposition Coming To Chicago “This is a one-of-a-kind exhibition. You will never again have the opportunity to see this many of Banksy’s works in one place. Once the exhibition is over, the artwork will be returned to art collectors around the world, and the chances that they will be displayed together again in the future are extremely slim,” said Corey Ross, President & CEO, Starvox Exhibits, which is presenting the exhibit alongside Collectiv Presents events.

The Art of Banksy, one of the largest touring exhibition of authentic Banksy artworks in the world, has announced that it will open this summer in Chicago. Hosted in a yet-tobe- disclosed location in the city’s West Loop neighborhood, The Art of Banksy will feature 80 original works from private collectors across the globe, offering a rare opportunity to view authenticated and certified Banksy artworks rarely seen by the general public. Scheduled to open Thursday, July 1, tickets will go on sale to the public Thursday, May 6 at 9am CDT. In true Banksy style, The Art of Banksy is not authorized or curated in collaboration with the artist, but rather sourced from private collections allowing the public to see works that would otherwise stay hidden in private homes or warehouses. The exhibition features many of Banksy’s most recognizable images, including “Flower Thrower,” “Rude Copper” and “Girl with Balloon,” famously shredded at auction in 2018. The canvasses, screen prints, sculptures, one-off and limited-edition pieces on display date between 1997 and 2008, a period which resulted in Banksy’s most distinguishable works. Banksy, whose identity is the art world’s biggest secret, is an enigmatic artist and world-recognized political activist. His graffiti influenced stencil technique, often combined with anti-establishment slogans, is immediately recognizable and never fails to generate immediate attention. Banksy’s works are seen on city walls, bridges and streets throughout the world, but The Art of Banksy offers a rare chance to see a multitude of works in one location.

14 boiMAG.com

Seen by 750,000 people worldwide, The Art of Banksy has already generated excitement in Melbourne, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, Auckland and Toronto and rave reviews from critics all around the world. Harper’s Bazaar advised “This isn’t one to miss,” Marie Claire proclaimed it “A must see!” while TimeOut Toronto described The Art of Banksy as “a welcome reminder of the explosive impact of the artist’s works, and of the powerful potential of street art.”

Tickets for the exhibition will go on sale to the public at 9am. CDT on Thursday, May 6 at www. banksyexhibit.com. Ticket prices start at $39.99 ($29.99 for children 16 or younger), with timed, flexible and VIP ticket options available. Tickets will be on sale for viewings between July 1 and Nov. 28, 2021. The Art of Banksy Box Office can be reached via phone at 844.871.1358. The hour-long walk-through experience has been designed with health and safety as a priority. Admissions will be limited in line with the City of Chicago’s capacity guidelines with touchless ticket-taking, temperature checks upon arrival, hand sanitizer stations and social distancing markers prominent throughout the venue, and digitally projected social distancing circles on the gallery floors.

OUT OF THIS WORLD Space Travel

The Perseverance rover is hunting for signs of ancient life and is collecting samples for future return to Earth. NASA’s Perseverance rover isn’t just exploring the Red Planet. The life-hunting robot will also help a little bit of Mars make it to Earth a decade or so from now, if all goes according to plan.

Perseverance also used the same entry, descent and landing (EDL) strategy as Curiosity. Both rovers hit the Mars atmosphere at tremendous speeds, deployed a supersonic parachute after friction slowed them down enough, and were finally lowered gently to the red dirt on cables by a rocket-powered “sky crane.”

Perseverance, the centerpiece of NASA’s $2.7 billion Mars 2020 mission, touched down inside the Red Planet’s Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. Once it’s fully up and running, the car-sized robot will search for evidence of past microbial life and collect several dozen samples for future return to Earth, among other ambitious tasks. “I don’t think we’ve had a mission that is going to contribute so much to both science and technology,” NASA Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk told Space.com shortly before Perseverance touched down. “It’s going to be truly amazing.” If Perseverance looks and sounds familiar, that’s because the robotic explorer is largely based off its predecessor, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover, which landed in August 2012 and is still going strong today. Like Curiosity, the Perseverance rover was built by engineers and scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Roughly 85% of Perseverance’s mass is based on Curiosity “heritage hardware,” saving NASA time and money and reducing risk considerably, agency officials have said. Perseverance is about 10 feet long (not including its robotic arm), 9 feet wide, and 7 feet tall (about 3 meters long, 2.7 meters wide and 2.2 meters tall). At 2,260 lbs. (1,025 kilograms), Perseverance weighs less than a compact car. Like Curiosity, Perseverance has a rectangular body, six wheels, a robotic arm, a drill for sampling rocks, cameras and scientific instruments. But those instruments are quite different than the gear aboard Curiosity, because the two rovers have divergent goals. Curiosity’s main task involves assessing the habitability of ancient Mars, whereas Perseverance will hunt for evidence of ancient Martians. Perseverance’s seven instruments “build on the success of MSL, which was a proving ground for new technology,” said George Tahu, NASA’s Perseverance program executive. “These will gather science data in ways that weren’t possible before.”

But Perseverance had some EDL upgrades that Curiosity did not have. For example, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the Mars 2020 mission, developed new landing technology called terrain-relative navigation. As the rover descended through the Martian skies, it used a computer to compare the landscape with pre-loaded terrain maps, guiding itself to a safe landing site and making corrections on the way down. Another new feature, known as range trigger, used location and velocity information to determine when to open the supersonic parachute, narrowing the landing ellipse by more than half. “Terrain-relative navigation enables us to go to sites that were ruled too risky for Curiosity to explore,” said JPL’s Al Chen, Perseverance’s EDL lead. “The ranger trigger lets us land closer to areas of scientific interest, shaving miles, potentially as much as a year off a rover’s journey.”

TUNING IN

When Sleeping Giants Wake by: Nicky Roland

Back in the early 80s, a new style of music was being gestated in Chicago’s underground clubs and house parties. Clubs like the Warehouse and The Foundry would be packed night after night with hot sweaty bodies heaving in unison to the steady thump of an electronic four-on-the-floor beat. In 1985, realizing the potential of this movement, a local DJ collective/record pool took a leap of faith and launched a new record label, DJ International Records. DJ International would soon become synonymous with House Music and the global phenomenon is spawned. For over a decade DJ International minted stars like a galactic nursery until the founders started moving in different directions to pursue other interests. Over the coming decades, the label went semidormant, releasing occasional compilations and albums, but never on the tick-tock schedule of their early days. Like any sleeping giant, a reawakening was inevitable. Armed with a catalog of unreleased material, a stable of established and new artists (including myself, Nicky Roland), and a new global distribution partner the giant is awake, and relaunching bigger and better than ever. Over the coming months, DJ International will be releasing a plethora of singles, EPs, and... arguably, the most important compilation album in over a decade, The Jackmaster 7. This month sees two new phenomenal releases, one from me, and one from House Legend, Meechie. Meechie’s new single “House DJs” features a song called “Dear Mother” that sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. Set to the sound of a pumping, upbeat house groove, the happy party vibes belie the heart-wrenching lyrics decrying the

18 boiMAG.com

heartbreak of coming out to your parents and trying to find acceptance. Meechie begs her mother to accept her as the daughter she raised and loved, to accept her for who she is. The tenderness and emotion are palpable. In the hands of a lesser singer, the message could easily get lost, but Meechie’s incredible vocals tare through the music, piercing straight to your heart. House DJs will be available on all major streaming and distribution channels on June 17th. Also coming out in June, my new single “I Lose Myself” is a pumping Samba-infused Latin House banger guaranteed to get even the stiffest formaldehydes on the floor. Written in response to 45s antiLatin American sentiment and policies, I Lose Myself celebrates the beauty of Latin America’s music and people with an unstoppable jazzy Carnival groove. As a kid growing up in the UK I saw the power the Ska movement had in uniting people and stamping out racism, I Lose Myself is my attempt to do the same thing for America. I Lose Myself comes out at the end of the month. Nicky Roland is a house music producer originally from the UK, now based in Denver, CO.

Finding Therapy is Different Than Finding LGBTQ-Friendly Therapy by: Dr. Charla Waxman BS, MBA, EdD Community Liaison

Therapists often find a niche. Sometimes this is a method of therapy or a therapy specialty that sparks their passion and fuels their practice and skill development. That being said, not all therapists find their passion in the provision of service for the LGBTQ client. Not all therapists have the base of skills necessary to enhance the skill development of their LGBTQ patient. Regardless, of needs and concerns for mental health, anyone requiring services should become a knowledgeable consumer. If there is a specialty need, a therapist with that therapeutic need should be sought. In any purchase or business choice, a match in service, customer care, and product is what creates a successful business exchange. With the purchase of any product or engagement in any business is a choice based on research; so should someone needing mental health assistance make an informed selection of program or service provider. How can someone seeking empathic LGBTQ mental health support become informed of LGBTQ-safe programs and therapists?

Gather the information you need to make an informed choice

When you call a practice or therapist provide information about gender identity and sexual orientation; include any information about things like transgender support needs and any trauma that has occurred oriented to identity and orientation. Have some awareness of the mental health conditions that are prominent. Identify who may be attending therapy with you if you involving other family/friend supports. All programs

will want insurance information and capabilities, so know what your insurance will allow.

Ask for a pre-therapy interview

Prepare your list of questions and look for someone who feels right to you. Ask about specialty and why they chose that specialty. Ask how long they have specialized in LGBTQ therapy.Ask where they studied and any modes of therapy they utilize and how those modes of treatment have created successes in other clients. Ask for a general time frame for engagement. Ask for the expectations that they have of their clients. Ask them what makes them unique in their area of specialty. Research individual and group therapies How do you work best? Do you need peer support and feedback or does a one to one experience sound more like you? Speak to your potential therapist about what they think is good match for you. Know that there may be issues central to being LGBTQ and being a person of color With some research, you will find some understanding, accepting, and affirming organizations who support LGBTQ communities of color. They are out there! Don’t give up! Use the information above to navigate and explore the selection of the therapist that will be the best connection for you. Don’t settle. Therapy is important and you want the best for you. If you cannot find an in-person connection that seems to support your needs and interests, know that many more therapists than ever are offering phone and virtual therapies and so you may even be able to find an interstate therapist connection. If you do, make sure that your insurance is allowed; you do not need a financial burden to create stress when you are already seeking help. continued >>>

SOCIAL MEDIA DATING Meeting Behind The Screen

by: Dr. Charla Waxman “Let me introduce you to my friend”, was usually followed by a friend and hopeful relationship date. Then, if you liked the friend’s friend, numbers were exchanged and you called or waited for call to continue talking and getting to know one another. For the most part, this is now seen as an unnecessary step to dating. In the age of social media, there are many other options that seem easier, more time efficient and people feel more in control of the process. Let’s start with Instagram. Instagram is an “app” that is all about photo and video sharing. Currently in the US, most Instagram users are between the ages of 25-34. More than 50% of Instagram users are female. (HuffPost, 2017). You can learn about a person and their interests by watching what is being posted. Anyone can view a post, but the person posting has no way of knowing who is viewing their Instagram. Kind of creepy, right? Know as you consider finding the right person on Instagram that photos can be altered and “shopped” or “filtered” and that can lead to surprises later and a dishonest start to a relationship. Starting a relationship with half-truths about appearances is not good and shows a certain concern for self-esteem. It could also be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is real and what is not. As it relates to self-esteem, according to the HuffPost article, Instagram scored the distinction of the most harmful app for mental health. Users often have poor body image, body confidence and will change photos to seem and look perfect and perfectly happy. Instagram, it seems, is not reality-based. Snapchat is bit less intrusive than Instagram. You are given access to view and “chat” about what you have seen. First, Snapchat has changed so much and so often that a guide was published to explain access and current adjustments to how it works. Overall it is a photo and video-chatting forum that can be shared but is only made available for a short time and then it becomes inaccessible, it is gone in a “snap”. Snapchat has its own language using phrases like snapcode, score and snapback to describe everything from talking to each other to ranking the number of contacts and connections made. Early on this

form of social media was known as the sexting app and many young people thought they were safe, but screen shots of sexual photos gave way to bullying, stress and anxiety. Others say that Snapchat is safe overall, but the downside is that people spend too much time on the app and less time getting to know the person “in person”. Twitter, the last to be discussed here has been made famous as the place to say whatever you think about anything. This will give you some insight into how someone thinks and feels, and may show you what their unfiltered self is like. This is a place where people can connect and share their thoughts with a large audience. Some say this is a great place to meet and date, but again personal interaction would go a long way. Dating via social media is a personal choice and for those who don’t get discouraged easily. In some cases, there is nothing remotely real about the pictures posted, the things told, and the opinions offered. In other cases, it’s an easy and efficient way to get relationships started and easy to stop if things aren’t going well. In general, the biggest concern with social media and dating is that too much time online means that offline there may be friends and family who are losing out. Social media may also point out that we are more gullible than we think and not everyone is in it for all the right reasons. Safety and physical and mental health should be looked after and no one should venture into social media without taking the time to learn about who we’re talking to on social media. Another issue with social media is that conversing in written form can easily be misconstrued and patience and clarifying is often required if you want a relationship to deepen. The deeper the relationship evolves, the more privacy is important. Putting information on social media may not be the best way to develop a connection. Know that meeting in person still creates the best “read” on someone. Social media is a good start if you are safety conscience, use common sense, and have positive self-care.

Future Technology The AI scientist

Cut off a flatworm’s head, and it’ll grow a new one. Cut it in half, and you’ll have two new worms. Fire some radiation at it, and it’ll repair itself. Scientists have wanted to work out the mechanisms involved for some time, but the secret has eluded them. Enter an AI coded at Tufts University, Massachusetts. By analysing and simulating countless scenarios, the computer was able to solve the mystery of the flatworm’s regeneration in just 42 hours. In the end it produced a comprehensive model of how the flatworm’s genes allow it to regenerate. Although humans still need to feed the AI with information, the machine in this experiment was able to create a new, abstract theory independently, a huge step towards the development of a conscious computer, and potentially a landmark step in the way we carry out research.

Space balloon

If you want to take a trip into space, your quickest bet might be to take a balloon. The company World View Enterprises wants to send tourists into the stratosphere, 32km above Earth, on hot air balloons. Technically ‘space’ is defined as 100km above sea level, but 32km is high enough to witness the curvature of the Earth, just as Felix Baumgartner did on his space jump. The balloon flew its first successful test flight in June, and the company will start selling tickets in 2016 – at the bargain price of just £75,000 per person!

Cancer-detecting ‘smart needles’ A “smart needle” has been developed by scientists in the UK which could speed up cancer detection and diagnosis times. Researchers believe the technology could be particularly helpful in diagnosing lymphoma, reducing patient anxiety as they await their results. At present, people with suspected lymphoma often have to provide a sample of cells, followed by a biopsy of the node to be carried out for a full diagnosis, a process which can be time consuming. The new device uses a technique known as Raman spectroscopy to shine a lowpower laser into the part of the body being inspected, with the potential to spot concerns within seconds, scientists from the University of Exeter say. “The Raman smart needle can measure the molecular changes associated with disease in tissues and cells at the end of the needle,” said professor Nick Stone, project lead, from the University of Exeter. “Provided we can reach a lump or bump of interest with the needle tip, we should be able to assess if it is healthy or not.” Crowd-sourced antibiotics Swallowing seawater is part of surfing. But now the scientists behind a new initiative called Beach Bums want to swab the rectums of surfers, to see if this water contains the key to developing new antibiotics. They’re searching for antibiotic resistant bacteria known as superbugs, by studying the samples from the surfers, they hope to learn more about these potentially dangerous organisms in the hope of producing new drugs to combat them.

QUEEN

Another One Bites The Dust Queen bass player John Deacon wrote the song. All four members of Queen wrote songs, and each wrote at least one hit. Deacon also wrote “You’re My Best Friend.” Deacon was influenced by the Chic song "Good Times." In an interview with the New Musical Express, Chic bass player Bernard Edwards said “Well, that Queen record came about because that bass player spent some time hanging out with us at our studio.” Deacon played most of the instruments on the track, lead and rhythm guitars, bass, reversed piano and additional percussion. Brian May did some guitar effects with harmoniser (in the interlude), and Roger Taylor played the drum loop. Surprisingly, there are no synthesizers. The drum track and the hand claps were looped and they repeat throughout the song. Freddie Mercury loved this track. Brian May recalled to Mojo, “Freddie sung until his throat bled on Another One Bites The Dust. He was so into it. He wanted to make that song something special.”

Let’s go Steve walks warily down the street With his brim pulled way down low Ain’t no sound but the sound of his feet Machine guns ready to go Are you ready hey are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat yeah Another one bites the dust, Another one bites the dust And another one gone and another one gone Another one bites the dust Hey I’m gonna get you too, Another one bites the dust How do you think I’m going to get along Without you when you’re gone You took me for everything that I had And kicked me out on my own Are you happy are you satisfied? How long can you stand the heat Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat look out

Queen band members were originally reluctant to release this as a single, but backstage after a Queen gig at the Los Angeles forum, a visiting Michael Jackson convinced them it would be a hit. “Michael and all his brothers were all going, ‘That’s a fantastic track. You must release it,’” recalled Queen drummer Roger Taylor to Q magazine December 2009. This meeting lead to several recordings and collaborations between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson, all of which remain unreleased. This was the single that really broke the band in America, and it garnered a huge following amongst American disco audiences, with many fans and journalists convinced it was a black man singing lead vocals, people obviously hadn’t heard of Queen before so didn’t know what Freddie looked like.. There was a rumor that Freddie Mercury was writing and singing about his personal war with AIDS. He knew he would be “biting the dust” very soon, and many of his friends were too. But, the rumor that the song was about AIDS isn’t to plausible. The song was written by John Deacon, a member of the band and was released on “The Game” album in 1980 when AIDS was still very rare and wasn’t really known in the UK till 1981, and Freddy Mercury didn’t become infected until 1987, as he claimed. Freddy died in 1991 at the age of 45.

Oh take it - Bite the dust bite the dust Hey Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust ow Another one bites the dust he he Another one bites the dust haaaa Ooh shoot out There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man And bring him to the ground You can beat him, You can cheat him You can treat him bad and leave him, When he’s down But I’m ready yes I’m ready for you I’m standing on my own two feet Out of the doorway the bullets rip Repeating to the sound of the beat Another one bites the dust, Another one bites the dust And another one gone and another one gone Another one bites the dust yeah Hey I’m gonna get you too, Another one bites the dust Shoot out
