he room is quiet as the prosecuting captain presents his argument. The practice trial stops as the coach pauses the rehearsal, pointing out the flaws in his statement and body language. The trial resumes as the captain readjusts his presentation.

Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, the Mock Trial Club will be available for students during lunch at BOHS. Led by Brittany Eaton, advisor and government teacher, Mock Trial members will train and practice to participate in court trials as prosecutors, defenders, and jury members.

The inaugural team will compete in mock trials against other Mock Trial teams from Orange County. The first rounds begin Nov. 8 and continue on Tuesdays the following four weeks until the playoff trials in December at the Orange County Courthouse.

“I want to be able to prepare students for [competitive trials] to the best of my ability [and have] Brea represented on an academic scale,” Eaton said. “Ultimately, I want my students to have another option for an academic club.”

The club promotes “the principle of equal justice for all” as well as training in various life skills, such as “critical thinking, reading, speaking and advocacy,” according to Eaton. By increasing “the recognition of legal issues,” Eaton hopes to promote career opportunities in civil justice for the Brea student body.

“I’m looking forward to meeting people from other schools.

Communicating, learning, and

exploring different point of views is really interesting for me,” Vivien Coop, junior, and Mock Trial member, said. “It will be good to be able to do something [I] love and share that passion with others.”

Mock Trial Club was created through a collaboration between BOHS, the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County (CRFOC), the BOUSD school board, and Theresa Bernard, a liaison of CRFOC. The club will be open for students of every grade level.

Positions for prosecuting and defense captains and co-captains, operations and social media manager, and treasurer are available for tryouts in August. Meetings will be held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Room 223, where professional attorneys will be coaching the students.

A MARVELOUS Journey Wildcat staff writer Kenneth Kim reflects on his journey alondisde the MCU

T

he scene is set: It’s the summer of 2008 and I’m sitting inside Regal La Habra cinema with my friends, about to witness the birth of a cinematic universe with one billionaire playboy in a suit of red and gold armor. I fell in love with Tony Stark and his missile-firing Iron Man costume and his devil-may-care attitude. Ten years later, I am still obsessed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), evidenced by my recent 18film binge to prepare for Avengers: Infinity War. There have been successful super hero franchises in the past, like Tim Burton’s groundbreaking Batman and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, but the MCU maintains its staying power with a rabid fan base that has grown up right alongside the universe and its characters. (Consider: When Iron Man was released in ‘08, we were six- to 10-years old.)

The MCU is a cinematic representation of our generation and as a result, its growth, failures, victories, and journey parallel our own. Just as changed throughout my life and became the person that I am today, so too did the MCU evolve and mature in a journey almost parallel to mine.

In 2012, my peers and I watched as our favorite superheroes joined forces in The Avengers, making history through a heroic collaboration we had only dreamed of. Watching the Avengers converge in New York to take on evil aliens was a life-changing moment for me as the sight of my favorite heroes finally assembling for the first time gave me just the courage I needed after leaving the safety of Laguna Road Elementary School, mere months away from entering the uncertain world of middle school.

Soon enough, however, both the Avengers and I were struck by an unavoidable side effect of maturing: having to take responsibility and the consequences for our actions. Phase 2 was all about the consequences of our actions, with films like Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier showing the Avengers coming to terms with demons created by their recklessness.

This struggle came to a head in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which the Avengers’ face a country-destroying Ultron, a villainous product of Stark’s reckless ambition. Stark’s hubris paralleled my own realization that my actions have consequences. Both Stark and I ended up realizing that if we weren’t careful we would feel the effects of our own immaturity (his being a megalomaniac who alienates Captain America, and mine being pulling parent-alienating all-nighters before tests).

As we entered the tumultuous world of high school months later, the MCU entered its Phase 3 with Captain America: Civil War (2016), showing the Avengers split by ideological differences. Once the closest of friends and unburdened by politics, the Avengers split into two camps, resulting in the shutting down of the Avengers and the scattering of our heroes. Similarly, as our generation became more aware of politics (fueled by our AP European History and APUSH and Government classes), we became the faces of divisive political activism at the expense of friendships. I have lost more than one friend after heated arguments over politics, a discussion that was never even in the back of our heads just a couple of years before. As I, and many others, spoke out more and more about our beliefs,

we started calling each other names, abandoning our years of friendship in the face of a perceived injustice.

By Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the heroes have been redefined by their constant trials.

Stark grew from a headstrong daredevil to a father figure to teen Peter Parker. Steve Rogers became cynical and lost faith in his nation.

Thor lost some of his closest relationships, learning the values of humility and selflessness.

Walking out of Infinity War, I was stunned by how much I could relate to all of these changes.

One scene from Spider-Man: Homecoming particularly strikes me; it’s when Peter is stuck underneath a mound of rubble, he sees his reflection in a puddle and remember’s Tony’s words: “If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.”

With the strength this gives him, he pushes the rubble off him, and proves that he is still a hero without his suit. That narrative is the biggest personal takeaway I have experienced from this franchise. My ‘suit’ was my childhood and my naive view that everything was fine. But as the Marvel movies progressed and I watched countless heroes rediscover themselves, my need for my ‘suit’ fell away and I grew as well.

The MCU teaches me about family, hope, love, and sacrifice to this day, and that cements the MCU as the film franchise that defines me. Here’s to you, Marvel.

Megan Roybal

With five cats, four dogs, two tortoises, one cockatiel, and one guinea pig, Megan Roybal, senior, is clearly an animal lover. And this passion for animals has inspired her to pursue Veterinary Technology at Stanbridge University, a nursing and Allied health school, next Fall.

“Animals are a huge part of my life (I own 13 pets), and they make people happy,” Roybal said. “You really do grow a bond with them; they’re your friends even though you can’t necessarily talk to them. When I’m upset, my dogs know and always try to comfort me. Animals truly care about you.”

Roybal aspires to be a veterinarian technician that works with dogs and cats.

Compared to a veterinarian who performs surgery on animals, puts them down if they’re too sick, and gives diagnoses, a veterinarian technician monitors and takes care of animals before, during, and after surgery. Roybal would prefer being more of a “nurse” to animals, as she “would be happier to help and see them get better over time.”

Carson Kaiser

Just this October, Carson Kaiser, senior, dropped his marine biology plans for a “better-fitting” occupation: businessman. Next year, he will major in Business/ Finance at San Diego State University.

“There are more opportunities in business than there are in the marine biology field,” Kaiser said. “I also think I’m a pretty decent people person, and I felt that I’d waste that skill if I chose to hang out with fish.”

Kaiser’s current job as a crewmember at McDonald’s has even given him valuable exposure to the business world.

“My working experience has taught me that no matter how terrible the customers treat you and no matter what they throw at you (they’ve thrown change at me before), you can’t get mad or retaliate,” Kaiser said. “You have to put a good face on for the brand, so they’ll come back.”

Post-college, Kaiser would like to either be a chief financial officer of a company or own a business.

Eric De Masi

Music has always been a part of senior Eric De Masi’s life, so it’s no surprise that his future will be composed of it as well.

De Masi has played the drums ever since he was three. And when he was 12, De Masi joined his first band at the Guitar Center Rockshow Camp. They were called Unknown Fate and they played various rock covers from the ‘60s to the early ‘00s. Now, in high school, De Masi is part of three bands: ‘90s pop punk Fockstail, garage rock Panacea, and experimental Plastic Microwaves. De Masi produces tracks for all three, and his work is featured on Spotify and iTunes.

“I like creating garage rock/punk because of the high energy and overall tone that most bands in those genres have,” De Masi said. “And rock in particular is going through a transitional period right now; a lot of different artists are changing what that word means. Being a part of that progression is a goal of mine, “ De Masi plans to either freelance as an audio engineer, attend LA Film and Recording School, or maybe tour long-term. But wherever he goes, De Masi wants “people to relate with tracks that [he] creates and inspire them to innovate sonically.”

Katie Swenson

Taking pictures on an iPod Touch when she was young was only the beginning of senior Katie Swenson’s passion for photography.

Now equipped with a Canon Rebel T6 and professional photographer aspirations, Swenson will pursue Photography at Biola University.

“Through photography, I feel like I’m able to capture a moment in its purest form,” Swenson said. “It’s something that comes very naturally to me; I have an eye for how things should look.”

As “she picked up the eye for photography on her own”, Swenson was exposed to the technicalities of photography in ROP Photo. She learned the amount of time needed for a photoshoot and an edit, and became more proficient in Lightroom CC and Adobe Photoshop. It was in this class that she realized photography was “definitely something [she] could make a career out of.”

With experience like wedding engagements and BOHS’s Homecoming Court photoshoot, Swenson decided to make her photography career official in January. Swenson made her own brand, Katie Swenson Photo, which she promotes on her Instagram, katieswensonphoto, and on her website, katieswensonphoto.com. Since then, she’s served around 20 clients, most of whom are high schoolers. Swenson takes college portraits, graduation shoots, dance photos, and landscape photos. Her goal is to “give people the best photos in the best quality.”

Once at Biola University, Swenson aims to develop her brand into a small business and “get [her] photography out there.”

Alek Cendejas

After watching Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs during his sophomore year, senior Alek Cendejas’s life came into focus he knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. Next Fall, he will pursue a degree in Provisional Film Production at CSU Northridge.

There wasn’t anything particular about Reservoir Dogs that caught his attention. According to Cendejas, it “isn’t even the best movie ever made.” But to make “something that great”, to make something that would profoundly change people’s perspectives, appealed to Cendejas. He started visualizing shots and coming up with story ideas wherever he went.

“Through movies, you can create stories that people can really learn from,” Cendejas said. “You can challenge societal norms and make a meaningful impact through such a common visual medium.

Everyone enjoys watching movies to certain extent, so film is a form of visual communication that reaches so many people.”

Currently, Cendejas is writing a horror screenplay inspired by the writing of H.P. Lovecraft. He specifically draws on Lovecraft’s “themes relating to humanity’s cosmic insignificance and the terror that comes from inserting beings beyond our comprehension into the mix.” As he doesn’t have any professional equipment, he’s experimenting with his iPhone and Moment camera wide angle lens. Cendejas believes that “a movie can be made with almost any type of camera.”

“I just want to make really great films that people enjoy for

various reasons because I enjoy so many different movies for so many different reasons,” Cendejas said. “I want to make an impact, but I also want to make films that people can enjoy as entertainment and as art.”

Ashley Kim

As more people in Northern California vote despite a larger population in Southern California, increasing local voter turnout in elections is a daunting task. But senior Ashley Kim is motivated to make sure that every person has access to, and the power to change, state government. This zeal for politics is what led Kim to double major in Business and Public Policy at UC Berkeley.

In high school, Kim has immersed herself deeply in the political world. Since the summer of her junior year, Kim has interned with California District 65 Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk Silva. She answers phone calls and organizes voter events during campaign season. On the side, Kim also holds voter registration drives.

“I want to represent the values of inclusivity and accessibility, which is why I’m so invested in voter turnout. I want to make sure everyone has an input on how our government is run and the power to change our system,” Kim said. “When people think of me in the political world, I want their political efficacy to rise through the roof.”

Kim’s ultimate dream is to become a Supreme Court Justice. In her free time, she enjoys reading about Supreme Court cases and their political insulation, meaning that policy is detached from other outside influences. To be in an environment where “[she] can pay attention to every aspect in a policy and make important decisions” appeals to her and one day, she aims to be at “the forefront of a meaningful Supreme Court case.”

Jonathan Eichinger

Reading Dan Hooper’s Dark Cosmos: In Search of Our Universe’s Missing Mass and Energy sparked senior Jonathan Eichinger’s passion for physics and eventually led him to double major in Physics and Computer Science at UC Berkeley.

“I thought it was a really interesting book, and it brought up a lot of things that I’ve never thought of before like dark matter and dark energy,” Eichinger said. “Learning about these weird cosmological phenomenon is pretty exciting for a teenager.”

A four-year GITA and former Physics C student, Eichinger has always had a natural curiosity about the STEM field. In the summer of his junior year, he was selected to intern at BOEING. His internship was in the aerodynamics sector, and he learned about computational fluid dynamics, which uses computer generated models to simulate airflow around wings. Eichinger is also the president of Robotics Club, which reached the First Robotics World Championships for the first time in school history. Both of these opportunities exposed Eichinger to the technical and research aspects of physics.

“I really like physics because it is essentially the underlying understanding of everything. If you really think about what makes the world happen, it’s physics,” Eichinger said. “It’s all the interactions between particles and you wouldn’t even be thinking right now if it wasn’t for physics. I’m the type of person who strives for understanding things a little bit deeper and knowing physics is like knowing the world a little bit more intimately.”

Eichinger plans to join an internship at Google or another tech company in Silicon Valley. Although “computer science is much more marketable than physics,” he would like a job that combines both.

Deborah Sohn

Motivated by her mother’s battle with thyroid cancer, Deborah Sohn, senior, will major in Radiography at the Boston branch of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) next year.

Sohn chose MCPHS because it fulfilled many of her college needs and wants.

MCPHS has centralized career paths, offers multiple undergraduate opportunities in various hospitals, and provides Sohn an accelerated path to graduate. Sohn was specifically interested in radiology and sonography due to her mother’s struggles with thyroid cancer.

“I was drawn [to radiology] because of the ultimate impact I could have on people’s lives,” Sohn said. “Radiology is the use of medical imaging to both diagnose and treat people with diseases and/or injuries, so I knew I’d be able to help people somehow with this career path.”

In the future, Sohn plans to earn a Master’s degree in Health Science and “get a good job in a hospital, [either] in Boston or California.”

Taylor Pi

A love of cooking has prompted Taylor Pi, senior, to pursue a degree in Hospitality at Cal Poly Pomona next Fall.

Pi has cooked several times a week since seventh grade as a fun way to relieve stress and make people happy with her food.

However, “as it’s not an ideal job for financial stability right away,” her next step is hotel business and management. This will not only prepare her for a potential culinary school path post-college, but also indulge her love of traveling and adventure.

“I’d like to go back to South Korea because my mom is from there, and I also want to explore Europe because it’s full of history. Honestly, I would like to go anywhere; I just like experiencing new things and getting out of my comfort zone,” Pi said. “Seeing how people live and seeing how one culture does one thing but doesn’t do another thing. It’s really cool to see various lifestyles everywhere and how the world can be so different and the same.”

Nathan Hackman

What started as a childhood interest in video games has transformed into a lifelong passion for Nathan Hackman, senior.

Hackman’s interest in video game design was sparked by games such as Doom and Starcraft. He was fascinated by the game’s visuals and how these visuals enhanced the gameplay. A game artist thinks of everything: a character’s backstory, what they’re wearing, and their personality. Hackman wanted to explore and share his own ideas on what a game should be like.

“With my art, I want to especially show people something they haven’t seen before. And I think that’s what a lot of video game designers are trying to do; they’re showing you something you would’ve never thought of,” Hackman said.

“For example, there is nothing else like the art in Fortnite. That’s why it’s so wellloved. It’s so cartoony and fun, but it’s a battle royale set-up.”

To achieve his dream of working in the video game industry, Hackman is applying to Laguna College of Art and Design for Game Art and Design, and hopes to someday work for Blizzard or another high-end video game company.

Acquiring a Taste of Brea

On May 24, the annual Taste of Brea: Chasing Delicious was held in Downtown Brea from 5 to 9 p.m. Hosted by Nationwide Insurance, the festival featured food booths from restaurants from Brea.

Thousands of visitors were offered samples of food and drinks, ranging from tacos from Fresca’s Mexican Grill to sweets from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Local business exhibitors were amidst the food booths, promoting their enterprise to the crowd. The band, Cold Duck, provided entertainment with a lively performance.

“It was a really nice environment, and my favorite food there was the crème brûlée.

When we both took our first bites, we just looked at each other and moaned because the food was so delicious. It was definitely a nice place to get a feel of Brea,” Victoria Bell, junior, said.

The Taste of Brea event is famous for “showcas[ing] [Brea’s] vibrant business community and city as one of Southern California’s premier destinations.” Taste of Brea draws over 3000 visitors by providing “exceptional dining, quality entertainment, and diverse shopping options,” according to breachamber.com. To sample local restaurants and breweries, one must purchase a wristband online. $25 wristbands were available for adults, and $10 wristbands were available for children ages ten and under.

According to Martin Oh, a visitor from Chino Hills, this event provides a chance for people to discover Brea’s value. Oh was able to “experience what Brea is like through the food and other features” displayed at Brea Downtown.

Rachal and Jarrett committed to Concordia University in Irvine and Westmont College, respectively.

Sibling Rivalry Senior team captains Iyree Jarrett and Jasmine Rachal walk the court as the last few seconds tick down against Los Alamitos in the CIF-SS Division I playoffs.

The buzzer sounds, signaling the final time Jarrett would play alongside her stepsister, Rachal.

This fall, Jarrett will play for Westmont College women’s basketball team in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), while Rachal will compete for Concordia University, Irvine, in Pacific West Conference.

Not having her sister as her teammate for the first time in 10 years will take some getting used to, Rachal believes.

“Now that we will be on different teams, I will definitely miss going over the game plan with her, talking about what we could’ve done differently in each game, and just analyzing our competition together,” Rachal said.

The Jarrett and Rachal duo was a dynamic one for the

Ladycats. Together, the siblings posted an overall record of 76-17 and undefeated league record of 20-0 in their three-year stint as varsity teammates, including a 23-5 season with a perfect 6-0 Crestview League record this year.

This season, Rachal led the team with 15.3 points per game, while Jarrett dished out 5.1 assists per game. Jarrett was named First Team All-League this year and Second Team All-League in 2017. Rachal achieved Most Valuable Player in the Crestview League, First Team AllCounty, and All-CIF Division I this year and First Team All-League and Second Team All-County in 2017.

As the two sisters begin their new basketball paths for the next four years, Rachal hopes for success in both her sister and herself.

“It’s been a lot of fun being a dynamic duo on the floor, and I know her and I will both thrive at our new schools. We will always have each other’s back no matter how far we go,” Rachal said.

“The first time I came to Hope everyone knew my name. Most of that had to do with my brother, but I had this feeling that my heart had found a new home. I knew that I had made the right choice and would be lead down the righteous path of God.”

I wanted to find a school that competed at the highest level and I was lucky enough to be offered a spot to compete for Irvine. I’m confident we can continue to win the conference championship and even beyond.”

Caitlyn Graves | BLACK HILLS STATE | softball “I’m extremely blessed to have signed there. It’s a great school with a great atmosphere. My coach is great, and my teammates are all cool and positive. I really like that I get to play in the RMAC, which is a super competitive conference.”

Jacob Cain | WILLIAM WOODS | track “I chose WWU [in Missouri] because in my opinion, it was the best education for the best price, because of my scholarship, and I will be able to continue my track career.”

Grant Rutledge | PACIFIC UNIVERSITY | soccer

“Hopefully I can make a difference to the program. There are so many things to do in the Portland area and that really excites me.

Pacific will be a great place to live for four years.”
