‘Snapping’ to change With Snapchat, we send selfies of face swaps, post stories of late night studying at Corner Bakery, and receive videos of dancing hot dogs.

But Snapchat is more than just silly and fleeting entertainment -- it is a place whose reach extends to sports, pop culture, and even news reporting and story-telling. It is a place that is ushering in a new era of digital journalism through its Discover platform. And in order to remain relevant in this Age of Information, the Wildcat has adopted Snapchat as a news platform.

NBC News originally paved the way for Snapchat News campaigns with their segment “Stay Tuned”. The twice-daily show features national and international news, politics, and pop culture, all of which are accessible on Discover.

Since “Stay Tuned”’s release on July 19, the show has grown its audience to over 29 million viewers, 60 percent of whom are under the age of 25, according to NBCUniversal.

winning work our student journalists produce every day, the Wildcat has turned to Snapchat as a platform to further expand and innovate our coverage of campus and local news. Print magazines and newspapers are still relevant today, but Snapchat enables breaking news coverage that can be seen immediately and more conveniently, and can support, through video and sound, the work we achieve in our print edition.

Some context: When we completed production of this issue of the Wildcat, it took 10 days from the time we sent our files to the printer to get the issue that you’re currently holding in your hands. That 10-day delay means we often miss out on breaking news and we struggle with timely coverage of events occurring on campus. Snapchat allows for news content to be broadcast in a matter of minutes. We can now post scores of the latest football game and the dates of the next school dance in real time, as soon as the information is made readily available to us. Timing won’t be an

Pictures of Senior Toga Day, Snapchat stories on choir shows, interviews with the students and faculty whom we feature in the newsmagazine, and reporting Ladycats’ basketball games scores are only a few examples of how we will utilize our platform.

any students struggle to stand in the face of constant competition and societal pressures of high school. According to an annual survey published

by American Psychological Association, high school students face stress levels higher than the average adults.

The Work With Purpose, Initiate Positive Change, Lead

by Example, and Demonstrate (WILD) program aims to change the stressful school environment into an optimistic one. With enthusiasm from the staff and rewards through periodic raffles, the students are encouraged to promote

positive actions on campus.

According to Bob Parish, assistant principal, the program, “clearly states the behaviors we desire to see our students embrace and display.” By initiating the program, he hopes to create ”the best” high school experience for all of the students.

WILD was created after a Positive Behavior and Intervention Strategies program was implemented by the Brea Olinda Unified Board of Education in 2016. Headed by co-chairs Kara Dietz, Skills for Success teacher and Link Crew adviser, and Parish, the WILD organizers attended a series of training sessions to plan out WILD program at the Orange County Department of Education.

The BOHS staff is promoting the program by offering WILD cards for students who exhibit positive behavior.

Every two weeks, these cards are raffled off over the intercom or during rallys, with prizes ranging from Homecoming tickets to Chipotle gift cards. “[The staff involvement] from different departments and grade levels gives different voices for students,” Dietz said. “[These aspects] hopefully will bring more school spirit and spread positivity, which is what the WILD program is really about.”

WELCOME TO SCIENCE OLYMPIAD For juniors Elly and Sally Min, science has always been a subject of “constant captivation”; as they aged, their love for experiments and observations increased.

Determined to achieve their long-sought dreams of success in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) department, the twin sisters decided to create BOHS’s first Science Olympiad club. The new club will make its debut during Club Rush.

Elly and Sally made the decision to create a “challenging, hands-on club” in hopes of “introducing amazing scholars [of] Brea Olinda” to opportunities that Science Olympiad offers to STEM students, such as scholarships and prepaid trips to national STEM institutions. Their aspirations were noticed by Wade Cormier, science teacher, who agreed to coach the Science Olympiad team.

Currently, there are 7800 secondary schools from all 50 states participating in national Science Olympiad tournaments. The tournaments feature a variety of assessments, such as analytical Q&A, project demonstrations, and labs, depending on each event - areas of subjects which the competitors will be tested in. The

BOHS Science Olympiad club is planning to compete in the Orange County Regional Competition held at UC Irvine on Feb. 18, 2018, in Division C, which is dedicated to high school competitors. The team will train for various events such as ecology, physiology, and chemistry.

“Science Olympiad is not just looking for math/ science intensive individuals. There is a diverse range of knowledge required (to succeed in the competitive [scene]), which can only be found in a diverse [group] of people,” Elly said.

Science Olympiad will host meetings every Wednesday during lunch in Cormier’s classroom, room 241. Training sessions outside school hours will take place every Monday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., but is currently subject to change.

“I know there is a ‘dream team’ out there,” Sally said. “I am looking forward to curating that team and paving the road to a successful competitive [club].”

iversity was defined at the 69th Emmy’s with three Asian actor nominees out of 75 nominations: BD Wong, Aziz Ansari, and Riz Ahmed.

Watching the Emmy’s annual September telecast has been a ritual for as long as I can remember. Popcorn in hand, I plant myself in front of the TV and marvel at the glamor of the actors’ dresses and quietly cheer as my favorite shows are recognized with awards.

But in recent years, I’ve grown increasingly dismayed by the lack of Asian representation at the Oscars, Emmy’s, and in Hollywood in general.

On both the big and small screens, Caucasian faces dominate, even in 2017, which featured an Emmy’s broadcast that, host Stephen Colbert claimed, was “the most diverse group of nominees in Emmy history.” Indeed, LGBTQ and black actors, directors, and writers were recognized with awards, but with only three Asian-American actor nominations out of 75 (a paltry four percent), how diverse and progressive is Hollywood really?

In California alone, Asian-Americans, including those of Pacific Islander heritage, make up around 17 percent of the population according to census.gov. In Brea, Asians make up roughly 19 percent of the population, as reported by statisticalatlas.com. And in Los Angeles County, which includes Hollywood, the heart of the entertainment industry, Asian Americans are not only the fastest growing population according

of the Oscar nominations in the last 89 years; an actor of Asian descent has not won an Oscar since 1985 (Haing S. Ngor in The Killing Fields); and the last time an Asian female was awarded a Best Actress trophy was in 1935 (Merle Oberon in The Dark Angel). 1935!

A contributor to the lack of Asian representation is arguably the most damaging: the stereotypes.

The stereotypes of us being the “nerdy best friend” (Tina in Glee, the ‘Asian Nerds’ group in Mean Girls, Ned in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Lawrence in School of Rock), the edgy “Asian fighter” with colored hair (GoGo Tomago in Big Hero 6, Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Knives Chau in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), the “quiet and submissive” (Lilly in Pitch Perfect, Kyoko in Ex Machina), and many more, limit the chances for us to have leading roles.

Farah Cho (‘10), member of the Uploaded: the Asian American Movement production team, said, “I believe that we as Asian Americans are still very much underrepresented. Many roles [in Hollywood] have been whitewashed or stereotyped into the typical ‘best friend’, ‘nerdy/smart’, ‘Asian gangster/fighter’ roles.”

But even in the cases when Asians are cast, they still aren’t paid the same wages as their Caucasian co-stars.

The Hawaii Five-0 controversy with Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim revealed that Asian actors were paid around less than 10 percent than their white castmates, despite appearing in the same total number (168) of episodes. to kcet.org, but L.A. is also the “capital of Asian America, with the largest number of Asian immigrants of any county in the nation.”

One would assume then that there would -- and should -- be a larger number of AsianAmericans on TV and in film. But the facts: only one in 20 speaking roles went to Asian actors in 2016, according to refinery29.com; Asian actors have represented only one percent

pay with their white co-stars. The lack of Asian equality in the entertainment industry is not how diversity should be defined, or even remotely a step towards diversification. Diversity in the entertainment industry starts with equal pay, equal representation, and equal opportunities.

And the fact that Asians still aren’t being met with equal pay shows just how far we are from being the “most diverse group” in Hollywood.

But the pay discrepancy between Asian and Caucasian actors is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the inequality of Asians in the entertainment industry. Asians, despite the pay discrepancy, are not even given the chance to be cast in roles meant to depict Asian characters.

From films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) to Ghost in the Shell (2017), roles meant to portray Asians have been portrayed by anyone but Asians themselves for decades.

Mickey Rooney’s role as Japanese neighbor I. Y. Yunioshi, and Scarlett Johansson’s role as Major Mira Killian, respectively, met with criticism for the whitewashing of the roles, and rightfully so. When Asian-Americans expect to see an Asian actress or actor portray the corresponding Asian character but are instead met with Caucasian actors attempting to fill the shoes of the Asian character, the message that Asians aren’t welcome in the entertainment industry is heard -- seen -- loud and clear.

While directors can make excuses by claiming they didn’t make the choices with “racial insensitivity” or “racist motives”, it does not justify the fact that Asian actors are not given the opportunity to represent themselves through Asian roles. They are portrayed poorly in films across Hollywood and made to act out the stereotypes that so desperately need to be eliminated.

But Asians have proven that they are capable of representation, recognition, and more. Just last May, Korean boy band BTS (Beyond the Scene) took home the Top Social Artist Award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, beating out the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes. Fresh off the Boat, a sitcom about a 1990s Asian-American family living in Florida,

has won a slew of awards, including multiple accolades for Constance Wu, who portrays beleaguered mom Jessica Huang. Clearly, it’s not that Asians have no talent; rather, they’re just not given the opportunity to showcase them. “‘I didn’t think of it as racism, where it’s like, ‘Oh, this is racist,’” Steven Yeun, The Walking Dead star, said in an interview with the Huffington Post. “I caught it in a way of ‘Oh, this is how we’re viewed all the time — as part of some glob, some amorphous, non-individualistic collective.”

And that isn’t right. It isn’t right for Asian-Americans to feel that they’re a “nonindividualistic collective.” It isn’t right for Asian-Americans to be pigeonholed into stereotypes like “quiet”, “dyed-hair girl”, and “nerdy” in Hollywood. Asians must be given an equal chance to be appropriately represented in Hollywood, and it can only start with bringing an end to whitewashing and stereotyping.

Fair representation in Hollywood can only be reflected when the next time we watch the Emmy’s or the Oscars, with popcorn in hand and eyes glued to our TV’s, Asians will no longer be seen as the “nerds”, the “fighters”, the “submissive”, the “best friends”, and when Asians will no longer be underrepresented.

In the last 89 years, only 37 Asians have won an Oscars award, even though 3,048 Oscars awards have been given out in total.

It isn’t right for AsianAmericans to be pidgeonholed into stereotypes like “quiet”, “dyed-hair girl”, and “nerdy” in Hollywood.

The Deat and cramps and the sound of pencils furiously jotting down notes can only describe one thing: handwriting.

But in our attempt to avoid the hassle of scratching out misspelled words and writing around smudged eraser marks, we’ve turned to keyboards -on our laptops, on our phones -- as a convenient, less painful, and usually neater alternative to writing by hand.

But this reliance on typing has led to the unfortunate demise of handwriting.

Hilary Maddox, third grade teacher at William E. Fanning Elementary School, and an advocate for writing by hand, said, “[While] we are busy teaching keyboarding, Google Slides, sharing documents, and all the other elements that are so crucial to being a 21st century learner, it might seem archaic to learn cursive. [But] writing taps into a different part of [students’] brain than [does the] hunting and pecking on a keyboard.”

lasting comprehension. No matter the excuse, there is no shortcut in technology that can mimic the lifelong benefits of retaining information through handwriting.

And while students can take notes with a keypad, it is also as easy for students to be distracted by their social media. According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, students use 20 percent of their classroom time using digital devices for activities unrelated to school. As long as technology and the internet are being used, the likelihood of a student opening a new tab for notes is as possible as the likelihood of the student scrolling through their Facebook feed or sending Snaps to friends.

In a society where learning how to utilize 21st century tools are crucial at such a young age, it is important to build strong handwriting habits. Not to mention, handwriting is a mandatory standard for tests such as the AP exams.

already use Gmail and Google Docs in their students’ education. Living in the Digital Age, it is inevitable that we modernize aspects of our everyday lives. Using tablets or laptops instead of clunky, looseleaf paper and pencils that always need refilling or sharpening is just as convenient as using our phone as an alarm clock, flashlight, and calculator.

With laptops, we even produce more, with students typically able to type 33 words per minute compared to writing 22 words per minute by hand according to the Wall Street Journal.

“One major benefit of typing notes in Google Docs is that you can share the document with other people in your class, and together you can take notes on what the teacher/professor [says]” Alex Huang, senior, said. “In higher level courses, occasionally there are concepts that professors give that you may be unfamiliar with. If I’m typing notes, I can easily search up the concepts or keywords in a separate tab

[that I can] refer back to later.”

But while technology can be a multitasking tool that can help students take notes in just a few clicks of a button, handwriting is still superior. In fact, the inconvenience of handwriting is what makes it more efficient than typing in the long run. According to National Public Radio (NPR), “the fact that you have to be slower when you take notes by hand is what makes it more useful.” And according to Pam A. Mueller of Princeton University, “students who were taking longhand notes in our studies were forced to be more selective...and that extra processing of the material that they were doing benefited them.”

It is no surprise that typing is faster than handwriting, but, without realizing it, students who handwrite notes are strategically investing into their long term success. Those small scribbles and moments of hand cramps are microscopic sacrifices toward

forgotten when students no longer turn in handwritten assignments, but rather turn in typed assignments through Google Classroom. And for the students who comprehend information better through handwriting than typing, their chances of succeeding to the best of their ability are severely limited if teachers are busy emphasizing tech in the classroom.

While it may require more time, practice, and effort, handwriting is nonetheless uncomparable to the temporary convenience of typing.

To prevent the death of handwriting, we must recognize the irreplaceable benefits it reaps for students in the long run. So the next time you reach for your laptop in class, consider if it would be the ‘write’ thing to choose convenience over prosperity.

After a year of intense traning, studying, and preparation, Jordan Meredith, senior, is now officially enlisted in the U.S. Navy Meredith’s military aspirations started with a click of the mouse. In the beginning of sophomore year, while researching potential careers online, the U.S. Air Force piqued Meredith’s interest. One occupation in particular caught her attention: Air Traffic Control. This prompted Meredith to contact local recruiters to become a part of the Air Force, but due to a lack of communication, she decided on another route.

The idea of a job in the military never left Meredith’s mind. And one fateful day in the Career Center last year capitalized on this lingering interest. That day, Meredith was again researching military careers, and luckily enough, Petty Officer First Class Zachary Redford was there to promote the U.S. Navy to BOHS students. His words were enough to convince her that the Navy was actually where her true dreams lay. From then on, Meredith started the recruiting process with Redford.

“He pretty much convinced me to choose the Navy over the Air Force, which I honestly thought was impossible. I also chose the Navy because they travel a lot more worldwide than the Air Force does. I want to see the world,” Meredith said.

Qualifying for enlistment took up most of Meredith’s junior year. She had to study for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which is a multiple choice test that covers subjects like automotive and shop information, mechanical comprehension, and electronics information. Her scores would decide whether Meredith was qualified for service and if

so, what career she would have in the Navy.

Meredith’s motivations paid off when she was accepted at the San Diego Military Entrance Processing Station on August 25. She even scored high enough on the ASVAB to be able to choose her dream job in the Navy: Electrician’s Mate.

Meredith was now officially in the Delayed Entry Program, where she will stay until being shipped off to boot camp in July. The goal she had chased so passionately for a year was finally met.

Cyndi Meredith, Jordan’s mother, said, “Countless days [were] been spent watching videos, giving up summer to study, learning the ways of the military, and soaking up any knowledge to make absolutely certain that this is what she wanted. And [Jordan really showed me] that [the Navy] was truly her dream.”

Meredith intends to make the Navy her lifelong career. But if that doesn’t work out, Meredith plans to go back to school and become a civilian electrician. For now, she is focusing on the shortterm and is “excited to meet some awesome people”, “find [herself]”, and “do things out of her comfort zone.”

Redford, her recruiter, said, “Jordan will, without a doubt, thrive in America’s Navy. Her smarts and infectious personality are evident the moment you meet her. Jordan has proven to herself that she has what it takes to meet any and all challenges, head on. Those natural gifts and her will to succeed in life will serve her well during and after in the world’s greatest Navy.”

Wait in the Delayed Entry Process (DEP). Your height and weight will be checked monthly in the recruiting office.

Go to Boot Camp

Once the date arrives, your DEP has officially ended. Go back to MEPS with your recruiter to get shipped off to boot camp.

Official Enlistment

When you are shipped to boot camp of a certain branch of the military, you are now officially enlisted in that force!

in Human Development and Education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Having spent a childhood fending for herself in foster homes, Terry had only herself to rely on. So Terry stopped her studies to focus on a full-time job. And in 1999, although she had to temporarily leave behind her nursing aspirations, Terry could continue her passion for the medical field as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Working as an EMT at UCLA Medical Center was hectic. After completing a short certification period, Terry was thrown into a whirlwind of hospital life. From helping out surgeries in the Department of Urology to riding the back of the

I’m very interested in the science behind things; I’m naturally very curious. I want to know what’s next in medicine not just what we know now. [What I liked about being in research] is that it’s not just about the state of medicine now, but it’s about how we’re going to help people tomorrow.”

Working late shifts at the bookstore, holiday sales at Nordstrom’s, and long hours at a chiropractor’s clinic wasn’t enough anymore for Heather Terry, health clerk. Her grades were falling, she was constantly stressed, and she worked herself to the bone every day to pay off student loans incurred while attaining a Bachelor’s Degree

ambulance, not one day was dull. It was busy, she worked long shifts, and she was always on her feet, but helping others has always been a motivating force in her life. Her eagerness to soak up more knowledge and become a better healthcare professional eventually resulted in her being promoted to Clinical Research Coordinator in 2007.

This is when her passion for health truly came to fruition. Through seeing cancer patients recovering, bridging the gap between the clinic and the bench, and facilitating drug development, Terry was making a difference in the medical field. Drugs she helped pass the checks of the Federal Drug Administration were stocked in pharmacy shelves.

The hospital started administering treatment using her approved drugs. Her efforts in the health field became permanent as they were reaching more and more people. She was even invited to birthday parties of past patients who thought they would never see their own grandchildren. To her, “no salary in the world [could give a person] that type of satisfaction of [helping others].”

She continued her work in Children’s Hospital Orange County (CHOC) when she left UCLA in 2010. However, her focus at CHOC wasn’t cancer like in UCLA; it was on quality of life treatments.

“Quality of life is so hard because people don’t feel like they can live; each day is a huge struggle, each day feels like a huge defeat. So when I was able to give better quality of life to patients, they were willing to fight more every single day, which is definitely rewarding,” Terry said.

In 2012, Terry put her career on pause to become a full-time mom for her two children. She also finished her degree in Human Development and Education at Hope International University from 2013 to 2015.

But Terry couldn’t bear to stray away from medicine permanently. So when the BOHS Health Clerk job opened up in 2017, she applied, despite how different her new occupation would be. Terry went from working at major hospitals that saw more than 30,000 patients a year to providing health and administrative services in a school with less than two thousand students.

“It’s definitely a change of pace. I like it even more actually because when you’re doing research, you’re always trying to find a way to solve a problem, you’re always trying to figure out a way to better something. [As the health clerk], I’m able to do that in a much [more real] way now since I’m interacting with students. It’s very tangible,” Terry said.

In the short-term, Terry is striving to “become better at her job” because she’s still in the learning process. She would also like to become more connected with the school, the students, and the community as a whole. In the long-term, Terry plans to return to school and become a Registered Nurse so that she can “serve at a higher level.”

Jerry Halpin, principal, said, “Terry brings a strong background in the medical field that will support all BOHS students. We are thrilled to have Mrs. Terry working [here].”

With every student that needs to subdue a headache, with every student who wanders into the office seeking a bandaid, and with every student requesting advice on a sprain, Terry is pursuing her passion in health. She is helping people, her lifelong dream, and “changing people’s perceptions about what health should be” day by day.

“People think of health as only being sick.

They don’t think of it as staying healthy or having the right mindset. To me, health, is a positive way of life. By having a healthy mindset and a healthy body, people can achieve whatever they want to do in life.”

a regrettable REPUTATION A beloved country artist. A worldwide pop princess. A gritty electronic musician. Taylor Swift can’t seem to sit still with the many shifts in her musical genres from the days of Fearless to this year’s Reputation.

Swift has been undergoing an “evolution” of her own since the release of her album Red, which marked her first attempt at breaking into the mainstream pop genre. Unlike her previous release Speak Now, Red incorporated dancepop and pop-rock, while also maintaining her traditional country style. In contrast, her subsequent comeback 1989 was completely devoid of any of her Nashville roots and marked a turning point in Swift’s career.

Her recent comeback album Reputation continues to stray from the pop and country and instead wanders into the realm of EDM. “Look What You Made Me Do” is an edgy mix between dance-pop and electro-pop, a first for Swift. The song starts off with an eerie electronic piano that is accompanied by a fading melody of chimes. A subtle-but-powerful bass pleasantly contrasts the soft beginning, reminiscent of the sounds on Swift’s Red. From here, Swift builds up to a climax by boosting the bass, but what comes after is just disappointing. Instead of the typical EDM bass drop lead-in, a clunky chorus is the climax, effectively wasting 45 seconds of the heavy build up. Admittedly, the chorus is very catchy, it just has no place in the song.

The chorus’s dull notes don’t sync well with the background beats, which creates an unappealing discord.

Overall, the composition of the song is lackluster, but the individual components like the strong bass and the funky chorus are great.

Honestly, the best word to sum up the experience that is “Look What You Made Me Do” is regret.

We expect a Swift who is concentrated on providing a hit song that we’ve never seen before.

However, the only Swift I saw was one focusing more on breaking out of her pop princess past than producing a one-of- a-kind song.

The only redeeming factor to “Look What You Made Me Do” is Swift’s vocals. Although the music itself is frustratingly disjointed, she’s shown that her voice can suit an edgier style. Her soft, but mature vocals complement the instrumentation of the bass and drums. One doesn’t overpower the other, making way for a good balance between a sweet voice and an energetic rhythm.

Clearly, the problem isn’t her musical ability; the problem is the choice of song that supports her new concept. But until we see other musical sides of this “new” her, I will say that the “old Taylor is dead”, which include the days of her actually producing quality music.

As fall arrives, fall sports teams have begun their journeys to ahieve their respective team goals.

Following last year’s second round defeat in CIF-SS Division IV, boys’ varsity water polo aims to compete with a “style that matches the talents” each player holds, according to Stan Sprague, head coach.

Sprague views this season as an “experiment” for the team’s new game plays due to the team’s lack of experience and strong push players.

Though full of hope, the Wildcats are currently struggling this season, posting an overall record of 4-11 at press time with a 12-3 loss against La Habra on Sept. 21. According to Matthew Boatner, the team “needs to start working on paying attention and communicating more in the water.”

With an overall record of 3-4 at press time, girls’ varsity tennis seeks to qualify for CIF-SS Division III playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Head coach Robert Walton believes that the team is prepared for league competition in hopes of becoming crowned North Hills League champions. With such a “tough schedule”, Walton hopes this will get them ready for league play.

Led by senior captains Alisa Fang, Mikaila Slife, and Tiffany To, the team faced Foothill on Sept. 19 and suffered their second straight loss with a final team score of 2-16.

Aiming to achieve the title of league champions and CIF contenders, girls’ varsity volleyball strives to surpass their “lack of communication”, according to Mariana Montes, head coach.

According to Ashlyn Stoddard, senior team captain, by putting forth an extra effort to talk to each other with “real world” comments, the team has created a close bond. Following this mentality, the team faced El Modena at home on Sept. 20, claiming their first league win with a sweep of 3-0 and set scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-14. With this, the team improved their overall record to 6-2 at presstime.

After making it to the final round in CIF last year, boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country have high expectations for this season. This year, boys’ head coach Bruno Morlan expects his runners to achieve maximum potential while girls’ head coach Dreux Valenti expects his team to build trust in each other.

Senior captains Chris Thornburgh, John Dempsey, and Tommy Valenti led boys’ varsity in the Woodbridge Invitational in Irvine on Sept. 16, placing 17th overall. Captains Lin-Yi Recinos, senior, Aiko Gervirtzman, junior, and Whitney Valenti, sophomore, guided girls’ varsity in achieving second in their race at the invitational.

Varsity football, recovering from eighteen players graduating on both the offensive and defensive lines, is in rebuild mode for the season. But despite these early-season struggles, the Wildcats are once again taking aim for a North Hills League title.

With these losses, senior linebacker Jason Allen believes having players compete for a starting spot on the team will influence the team to grow stronger. Head coach Robb Perrance also has high anticipations as he expects this season to be a championship one. He says the “team wants to play the very best we can each week, preparing with great attitude and energy, making each day our best day to date.”

The Wildcats are currently 2-2, beginning their season with two consecutive losses against Sonora, 26-20, on Sept. 1 and Valencia, 56-0, on Sept. 8. However, the Wildcats took a dominant first win, 31-14, against Diamond Bar on Sept. 15 and extended their streak to two with 19-15 win against Foothill on Sept. 22.

After four games, junior quarterback Jacob Moon leads the team in passing, throwing 440 yards with two touchdowns. Junior running back Nathan Wyse holds the most rushing yards with 253 yards on 45 carries while Junior Christian Thongphrachanh leads in receiving, posting 208 yards on 11 receptions and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, junior linebacker Noah Tango leads in tackles with 40, and senior cornerback James Narey holds the most interceptions with three.
