As of Oct. 6, there have been 15 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States in 2017, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. This year, California itself has been wracked by more than 6,267 fires which have burned 497,281 acres, according to CalFire. And just in Orange County alone, the Canyon Fire 2 devastated as much as 9,200 acres, forcing thousands of evacuations and destroying 78 homes on Oct. 9.

With the recent spate of disasters, we have to be alert and prepared. Taking measures to prepare for an upcoming disaster isn’t difficult. For example, making an emergency kit is relatively easy. Ready.gov suggests to include supplies like a first aid kit, bottles of water, nonperishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, dust masks, emergency blanket, and garbage bags. When you evacuate, have a bag containing these items at the ready to grab at a moment’s notice.

The right mentality is key to preparedness as too many of us downplay the possibility of a disaster. During earthquake drills, we laugh as we duck our heads under the desks. During fire drills, we joke around with our friends and count the minutes until it’s over. Clearly, most students trivialize these drills designed to help us in an emergency situation.

If an earthquake were to happen right now, what would you do? Where would you go? How would you contact help if you don’t have cell service? What would you need to survive if no one can immediately come to your rescue?

Chances are that you don’t know the answers to any of these questions. This should be a wake-up call for you to find out these answers.

The bottom line is: Don’t underestimate the severity or possibility of a natural disaster. Although it may seem an inconvenience to figure out school evacuation routes, learn escape routes from your home, pack an emergency kit, or know how to perform CPR and basic first aid, these precautions could very well be the difference between life and death.

Kiosk Know-how BITA III students build kiosk for Fullerton Arboretum as part of ongoing class project.

E

very year, thousands of people flock to the Fullerton Arboretum to learn more about botanical species and see nearextinct plants. To help guide visitors to the different parts of the Arboretum, students of the Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) are constructing a guidance kiosk.

The opportunity to build the kiosk arose because Development Manager of the Arboretum Harriet Bouldin’s children, Henry Bouldin (‘07) and Thomas Bouldin (‘14), attended BOHS. Wanting to promote BOHS’s BITA program, she reached out to Patrick Axtell, BITA teacher, about building a kiosk for the Fullerton Arboretum.

The project is a collaborative effort from all four BITA classes.

BITA 1 is painting parts of the kiosk; BITA 2 has built parts of the roof and installed the drywall; and BITA 3 and 4 are focused on wiring electricity to the structure. All BITA students participated in drawing the building plan for the kiosk. Some students also take time outside of their respective

BITA class to work on the project at the northwest corner of the campus.

The portable, wi-fi-enabled kiosk will be placed at the main entrance of the Arboretum, where its staff will hand out brochures about the Arboretum and give directions to visitors.

“It was a great opportunity because we needed a first project for the school year,” Axtell said.

“We are trying to rebuild the BITA program. I’m the fourth teacher in four years. Our students have a lot options like Newspaper, Computer Science, [Foods], construction. Our school is wonderful because there is a lot of stuff [for the students] to take. A lot of them like to take BITA to use as a career or because they want to use hand tools so they can use those tools and skills at home.”

The construction of the kiosk has enhanced BITA students’ construction skills, especially those who plan to pursue careers in the building industry.

“I’ve learned all sorts of skills from [installing] drywall to the siding to the roofing. Right now,

I am helping with the drywall and putting up the side walls to help complete the kiosk. I plan to build houses and anything that people need in construction, so this experience is definitely a stepping stone,” Adrian Robles, senior, said.

Jonah Burt, senior, said, “I was helping with the windows. We had to measure the window frame to make sure it was the right height and width for a liner board that will go in there.

At home I’ve done wall repairs [and] changing outlets. I always fix stuff around the house. I took this class to enhance it and from this class, I found out that I wanted to do more.”

The project has already been completed, but the drop-off date at CSUF was not available at

presstime. “[At the drop-off], the district folks will come, Regional Occupational Program (ROP), and [BOHS] administrators will come.

We’re hoping the superintendent comes. There will probably even be some news media involved at the drop off. It really is pretty big news for BOHS,” Axtell said.

After the project is completed, BITA classes will work on more local activities, such as rebuilding the bullpen for the baseball field and building an island unit cabinet for a BOHS teacher.

he click-clack of the keys and the brightness of the retina HD display breaks the silence in the AP Calculus classroom. A green battery light appears on math teacher Jennifer Collier’s iPad as she charges the device for her next class.

Tech-savvy teachers like Collier have implemented technology such as the projector, chromebooks, online programs, and Apple TV in their classrooms to assist student learning.

Collier makes frequent use of her iPad and the app Notability to efficiently highlight material and write notes in class. Daily lectures are recorded and posted on Google Classroom. Collier believes that tech use in class is vital to ensure that all of her materials are readily available 4

to her students, even outside of school.

“I have so many juniors and seniors that are absent because of sports [and] college visits; there are kids constantly leaving the classroom for some reason. It is hard for them to catch up and I have to reteach the material again, which takes more time,” Collier said. “By recording my lessons, students who missed the class and students who wish to review the lesson can easily get up to speed.”

Collier also uses online resources such as the advanced application Desmos. Desmos is an app that uses digital math tools and interactive activities.

teacher, and Sara Bottalico, science teacher, also utilize the iPad as a teaching tool. Similar to Collier’s use of Notability, Teal has the app to upload his notes to the Google Drive folder “AP Econ Student”.

In addition, he uploads all of the textbooks onto Google Drive so they are easily accessible for students.

Bottalico uses Airplay Mode to present her slides on the screen, as well as videos such as Ted Talks that supplement the material.

To better student accessibility to content, Nicole Baughman-Collinge, math teacher, creates online videos which she posts to Google Classroom and Youtube. The online video program, which involves BaughmanCollinge working on the test review sheets, daily lectures, extra practice problems, and homework, is designed to aid students who are in need of help with math problems outside of class.

“The class time can be [saved], to have an interacting period,” Baughman-Collinge explains. “It’s less teacher-centered, [and] more student-centered.”

Meanwhile, in math teacher Matthew Finnerty’s class, a projector blasts the screen with diagrams and math problems through an Elmo, a versatile document camera. Finnerty utilizes the Elmo to make it easier for students to follow along during lectures and problem-solving. “[Elmo] supplements instruction [and] assists [students] in visualizing diagrams and problems,” Finnerty

explained. “Technology allows, especially in mathematics, an extension of different concepts; it is a great supplement of what we traditionally teach.”

BOHS teachers, across all departments, are increasingly utilizing technology in their classrooms. According to a survey conducted by the Wildcat, 27% of teachers polled use Google Classroom at least once a week, 68% use a projector four or more times a week, 47% use Chromebooks once a day, and 94% use Macbooks four or more times a week. Clearly, teachers are embracing technology.

And the use of iPads and applications like Kahoot, Desmos, and Quizlet in high school prepares students for the “more technologically-savvy college environment,” according to Betty Lee (‘15).

“Tech use in my college, UC San Diego, is massive. I use my laptop to take notes in every class and it’s useful since typing is faster than writing,” Lee said. “Many of my professors post assignments online and some even have their lectures [online] to allow students to review them. Because of all this, I think that increased tech use at high school will help students transition from high school to college.”

As BOHS teachers continue to incorporate more technology into their lessons, Wildcats will be better prepared to take on higher education.

Each aspiring entrepreneur must impress any one of those industry leaders to invest in their product. Success in the dog-eat-dog world of business startups and development calls for such efforts to stay afloat among the fierce competition.

Through the Shark Tank project, Brittany Eaton, social science teacher, created an opportunity in her Economics class to create and pitch their business ideas to a panel of “sharks”, or investors. Introduced on October 26, the project’s purpose was to encourage participants to “think like a producer and practice their negotiation and collaboration skills.” The students are required to divide into groups and create a unique product in order to convince the sharks, which consisted of a group of volunteer students and teachers, to “invest” in their product.

Based on the TV show Shark Tank, which features billionaire investors who listen to business owner pitches before deciding if the company is worth investing in, Eaton’s students were tasked with

According to Eaton, this project promotes key topics behind businessbuilding: not only does the project require persuasion and impromptu speaking skills, but also assertiveness.

Taking ownership of their product and answering the shark’s questions with “sincerity or confidence” may “influence their decisions to ‘invest’

in their company.”

Ashton Ogdon, senior, advertised dissolvable contact lenses which last for six months before users must replace them. Ogdon believes the Shark Tank project introduces an essential skill the world needs -- creativity. “[Creativity is] an important concept that needs to be reintroduced to students of all ages because it is slowly being taken away from us. We need [it] to be able to innovate products in the real world and advance today’s technology.”

Eaton hopes the assignment will open her students’ eyes to the benefits of careers in business. Ogdon agrees that the project has been helpful, with the “hands-on” project allowing “students to be creative [without] boundaries.”

The project and its concept is more than enough to guide students in their business aspirations, one pitch at a time.

How vulnerable are concerts and entertainment venues from mass shootings?

ver time, concerts have implemented metal detectors and other forms of security “‘to ensure [that] guests feel safe and secure’”, said by Cory Meredith, founder of Staff Pro Security, a concert-security firm, according to billboard.com. But in light of the Las Vegas shooting on Oct. 1, are concerts really taking the appropriate preventative measures to ensure our safety?

With frequent and deadly concert attacks, it is no surprise that concert massacres have prompted much tighter security guidelines. On Nov.13, 2015, the Bataclan theatre massacre in Paris left 89 dead; on May 22, 2017, the Manchester Arena bombing at an Ariana Grande concert left 23 dead and over 200 injured; and on Oct. 1, 2017, the Las Vegas shooting at a Route 91 Harvest concert left 59 dead and over 500 injured.

It is impossible to predict how or when a concert will be attacked. The Manchester bombing introduced the “latest technique in the terrorist playbook” when the bomber detonated his device at the edge of the event as fans were leaving the venue, according to ocregister.com.

The Las Vegas concert shooting introduced the “all-but-unforeseeable ‘black swan’” technique of aerial assault by shooting at a “downward angle,” according to the New York Times.

“I’ve always been a people watcher, always aware of my surroundings in concerts and anywhere in general,” Faith Luevanos, junior, and an avid concert-goer, explains. “At a concert where it’s general admission, I scope out exits and plan an escape route if anything were to happen. Usually, my friends and I will make a meeting spot just to be on the safe side.”

And while it is impossible to predict a concert attack, extensive preventative measures can be taken. In our modern generation, concerts have “become the site of bomb-sniffing dogs, body scanners and high-definition closed circuit cameras” as stricter security protocols are implemented after high-profile attacks, according to the New York Times.

On May 31, the Hollywood Bowl installed metal detectors after the Manchester bombing and festivals such as Cal Jam 2017 and the Austin

City Limits also amped up security protocols following the Las Vegas shooting. Cal Jam 2017 implemented “bag searches with size limits and metal detectors, along with enhanced security and law enforcement presence” according to the Los Angeles Times, while Austin City Limits implemented “heightened security”, response plans, and “hardened barriers around the venue [along with] the scrutiny of taller buildings near the grounds” according to cnn.com.

Blanca Torres, junior,. and an attendee of the Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull Concert on Oct. 21 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, explained the contrast in concert security after the Las Vegas shooting: “I did notice [that] there was a lot more security during intermissions,” Torres said. “The entire time I was paranoid [that] something [would] happen so as soon as it ended I just wanted to get out. Throughout the concert, I looked around often because I was so paranoid and worried.”

Concert security cannot solely rely on fixing the mistakes of attacked concerts; it cannot be successful if it relies on the assumption that a concert will continue to be attacked in a certain way. Just as the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest festival mistakenly tailored security measures based off of the assumption that it would be attacked, similar to past attacks like the Manchester bombing or the Bataclan shooting, we cannot model security measures after the event. Just as Cal Jam 2017 and Austin City Limits only adjusted their security measures after the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest festival, measures need to be taken before, not after a deadly attack.

The unfortunate reality: It is only a matter of time when another attack will happen.

Massacres shouldn’t serve as a catalyst for taking extensive security measures. Rather, we must take extensive precautions like securing open air concerts, securing the location and surroundings of a concert, and securing all possible security measures before such massacres occur, not after when flaws are fixed moments too late.

In the distance, riot officers brandished night sticks in an offensive position, ready to strike. Although they were there to maintain law, the wall of armored and armed officers was an intimidating and frightening reminder that danger was imminent.

A protester who shoved an officer was dragged down and handcuffed, screaming obscenities as several more riot officers created an outward-facing circle around the arrest.

Yiannopoulos supporters chanted, “He is our voice,” angrily arguing that Yiannopoulos provides them a platform to be heard.

It was at this point that I decided to leave as the atmosphere was growing angrier and more violent.

The protest and its quick spiral to mayhem opened my eyes to the divisions that split our society apart.

The protest was designed, initially, to be peaceful, but in my eyes, it had collapsed into argumentation driven by hate on both ends. Both sides were motivated by their own ideals: protesters believed Yiannopoulos’s speech was an insult to free speech, while supporters believe Yiannopoulos is a way for their conservative voice to be heard. According to the OC Register, Yiannopoulos continued his speech, discussing topics from sex allegations in Hollywood (“Halloween is the only day when fourteen-year-olds willingly go to Kevin Spacey’s house,” he said), to Michelle Obama’s looks (“No one is attracted to transsexuals,” Yiannopoulous jabbed).

Jonathan Lopez, a fellow protester I had met, noted that, “The protest will dissipate, but I think I’ve been challenged by this opportunity to become more involved in my community against hate speech.”

I realized over the next several days that he was right; the protest may not have stopped Yiannopoulos, but it did inspire me to raise my voice and become more involved in activism. I walked away from the protest strongly believing that even though Yiannopoulos was allowed to speak, my presence assisted in providing a stance against the hate speech he so vigorously stands for.

Staff writer Kenneth Kim attended a speech by altright political commentator Milo Yiannopoulous at CSUF on Halloween night. This is what he saw.

W

hen I heard the news that Milo Yiannopoulos, an alt-right political commentator known for his incendiary rhetoric, was speaking at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), on the afternoon of Oct. 31, I decided to attend to protest his hate speech. I felt I had an obligation to protest because I disagreed with everything Yiannopoulos stood for: anti-feminism (“No matter how you look at it, feminism is cancer,” he’s said.), racism (“Behind every racist joke is a scientific fact.”), and homophobia (“Something inside me tells me that being homosexual is probably wrong.”).

If I stayed silent, I would feel guilty about not raising my voice against hate speech.

Around 4:20 p.m., protesters filed into the main quad to initiate a peaceful protest, chanting “Racists out, immigrants in.” CSUF security officers lined the perimeter of the quad, hands hovering near the utility belts at their hips. It wasn’t hard to guess why they were on high alert given that previous speeches at universities such as UC Irvine on June 2, 2016, and UC Berkeley on September 24, 2017, resulted in violent clashes between Yiannopoulos

supporters and members of Antifa, an anti-fascist political movement (who were also present at CSUF, and identifiable by their “Antifascist Action” posters). According to the OC Register, roughly 800 supporters were in attendance, with an unconfirmed number of protesters.

By 4:30 p.m., a new chant began: “The police and the Klan go hand in hand.” It was a mark of the angry tensions exacerbated by the dozens of rows of helmeted riot police from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies, with the L.A. Times reporting that at least 275 officers were on campus. The atmosphere grew restless, tense, and ominous and I was beginning to fear that violence would potentially break out.

As the protest continued, murmurs of disapproval grew to heated yells, which in turn led to vicious arguments, with various protesters and counter-protesters screaming in each others’ contorted faces. All around me were angry demonstrators and Yiannopoulos advocates pushing and shoving protestors -- including me -- in their rage. Suddenly, around 30 feet away from me, a fist fight erupted between a MAGAhat-wearing middle-aged woman and a young

ontrary to being known as “The Golden State,” California, in recent months, has been anything but golden. Due to wildfires, Californians were greeted by the lingering smell of smoke, ashcovered cars, and blackened skies. And while fires are not uncommon occurrences in California, their increased presence and danger raise the question as to how these fires are started and whether Californians are taking proper preventative measures when they do occur.

From just June to October, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) reported 468 major wildfires, including the deadly October wildfires in Northern California that claimed 43 lives, burned more than 245,000 acres, and destroyed around 8,900 buildings throughout October, according to cnn.com.

Southern California has not been spared the chaos and damage caused by wildfires. In 2008, the Freeway Complex Fire burned 30,000 acres and caused damage across Orange County, including structural damage to Brea Canyon HS and BOHS; and more recently, the Canyon 2 Fire in Anaheim Hills, and a brush fire along Carbon Canyon Road, burned over “9,200 acres and destroyed or damaged nearly 60 homes in Anaheim Hills” according to the Los Angeles Times.

With the fires being just weeks, and in the case of the Canyon 2 fire and Carbon Canyon Road brush fire, days apart, questions have been raised if adequate preventative measures were taken and what measures should be taken to prepare for future fires.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) advises that those living in high-risk areas should “construct homes with fire-resistant materials” and practice evacuation plans. And in order to stay informed, abc7. com suggests that those living in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas should “identify how local authorities will notify you during a disaster” and to also become familiarized with “local radio, TV, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Weather Radio stations or channels.”

Brea, among other cities in Orange County that are considered “very high fire hazard severity zones”, according to the ocregister.com, has likewise taken appropriate preventative measures.

“We have plans in case [fires] happen and the city of Brea has worked to mitigate potential fire damage” Jerry Halpin, principal, explained. “The district [changed] the shrubbery we have planted around campus to be more drought-tolerant and not as likely to burn strong.”

change. Climate change, according to LeRoy Westerling, professor at the University of California, Merced, is evident because “dry periods [have] become more extreme” and “wet periods [have] become more extreme.” These factors pave the way for wildfires: precipitation in the wet periods allows more vegetation to grow and the dry periods dry out the vegetation, leaving them as fuel for the wildfires.

A combination of “strong winds, extremely dry conditions, and an abundan[ance] of combustible material” are what have fueled the uncontrollable blazes of Northern California, according to the Los Angeles Times.

But while it is a huge factor behind the destructive potential of wildfires, climate change is not what necessarily causes them. The U.S. National Park Service estimates that 90 percent of all wildfires occur due to human error, while only 10 percent of wildfires are caused by nature. As hotter and drier weather becomes the new norm, increased wildfire preparedness is necessary to combat the risk.

“These fires came down into neighborhoods before anybody realized the fires were occurring in many cases,” Ken Pimlott, the director of CAL FIRE, explained to cnn.com. “There was no time to notify anybody,” about the fast-advancing Canyon 2 fire.

In addition, education is key. Informing and educating Californians about the risks of wildfires and preventative methods can help to decrease property damage and the fire hazards.

Locally, Brea funds and operates the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which “trains [individuals] in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, [and] team organization,” according to the City of Brea. Certified CERT members are permitted to aid locals when emergency responders are not immediately available.

The courses are provided free of charge. Additionally, the city also participates in Alert OC, a regional disaster notification system, that notifies subscribers about disasters and threats in their local community.

Ultimately, it is these local opportunities that can allow communities to become better prepared for disaster. Early notification and fire safety education is key. And although the future remains uncertain about when or where fires will blaze through California, there is no doubt that devastating fires will threaten communities in the future; therefore, communities must be prepared to take appropriate measures and protocols against the flames.

How was the transition from Georgia to California?

Definitely some major culture shock coming from a small town and community to a town with a lot more people.

Is playing golf here different from playing golf in your previous high school? If so, how?

Simply by the nature of it -the grass is different, the air is different, so that took some adjusting in my games.

How has golf shaped you as a person so far?

It has definitely taught me responsibility, and [how to] do things for myself because golf is an individual sport. It takes a lot of work, a lot of time, it takes a lot of effort -- [in other words] self-responsibility -- taking care of things myself because that’s what you need to do.

Goals for golf in the short-term and long-term future?

[In the] short term, I’m looking to get recruited. Right now, I should be committed before the end of 2017, so that’s exciting. [For] long term, a good college season and maybe lower my scoring average, do better overall in courses.

en minutes prior to the football game, Wildcat Stadium fills with parents, students, and fans. A man dressed in a green Nike athletic polo, beige shorts, and a “Wildcats” cap stands in the press box surveying the varsity athletes warming up on the field below. He takes one last gulp of water and reminisces about his father, the late Bob Knaus, who would operate the game clock with one hand while holding a fistful of sunflower seeds in the other.

His father’s legacy in mind, Knaus grabs the microphone and with a loud, clear voice, pronounces his signature catchphrase, “I need everybody up for the kickoff!”

That Friday night ritual with his father alongside him in the press box would fuel Andy Knaus’s (‘95) passion for sports broadcasting.

“My father was always supportive, and working alongside him was an honor. I am proud to work with my dad in the announcing booth, and he is very missed. [Those are] memories I will always treasure,” Knaus said.

Since high school, Knaus has been inspired by historic broadcasters such as the Dodgers’ Vin Scully and the NFL’s John Madden. He earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Communications with a minor in Radio, TV, and Film at California State University, Fullerton, in 2005.

Knaus’s first encounter in the press box came in 2007, when Mike Knaus, his brother and BOHS’s boys’ Athletic Director, offered him a job as booth’s “spotter”, informing the announcer of the players that contributed to each play. Alongside his father, and former announcer Barry O’Dea, Knaus observed the techniques that O’Dea used, and the following year, Knaus accepted the position of announcer.

When he’s not calling games on under the Friday night lights, Knaus is the Midwest and Northeast regional sales manager for Saf-T-Flo Water Services, a job he’s held since 2003.

“But,” he says with a laugh, “if some talent scout for ESPN saw a Brea football game and wanted to hire me, I’d probably take it.”.

A class of 1995 graduate, Knaus played three years at guard and defensive end for the varsity football team. He was a three-year varsity letterman, a three-time Ironman, which included

“[Announcing] is a privilege for me, and it’s a lot of fun. I get to give back to my Alma Mater and to the football program that taught me so much in high school.”

ANDREW KNAUS, announcer lifting over 1000 pounds in bench press, squat, and clean, and he was awarded All-League honors his junior and senior years.

Knaus’s passion and commitment to announcing games is recognized by his colleagues.

“Out of the people I know, he is perhaps the most committed to not just football, but all sports.

When he first began announcing, it was with his father who also had a similar passion for sports and has since passed. Taken together, these factors combine to make announcing the games something very special to him,” David Ballard, clock operator, said.

Part of Knaus’s passion is shown through his meticulous analysis and accuracy with player names and statistics.

Robert Zietlow, spotter, said, “I’m not a stat or name guy when it comes to sports, but Andy always knows every little detail about the players.” Zietlow added, smiling, “Except how

to pronounce the names of the visiting teams. At least once a game, a parent visits him to correct the pronunciation, which I get a kick out of.”

Knaus first created his signature catchphrase when he noticed the silence of the crowd during a football game in 2010.

“I needed to get the crowd back into the game. The team then started to come back and eventually won so it just stuck. I do my best to be impartial, but I want the fans to be fired up,” Knaus said.

Serving in the job for a decade now, Knaus hopes to continuously be known as the man behind the microphone.

“I don’t really have a Chris Berman catchphrase,” Knaus said, referencing ESPN’s long-time commentator, “but I’ll work on one.”

Samantha Magpantay reviews Downtown Brea’s eatery, Cinnaholic, which serves vegan cinnamon rolls.

alking into Cinnaholic, the aroma of cinnamon wafted pleasantly throughout.

There was a quiet bustle as the employees decorated various rolls with chocolate sauce, strawberries, almonds, and the like. But the true focus of the shop was at the front: the glass display of all the available specialty rolls, ranging from Coffee Cake to Peanut Butter & Jealous. Eager to try these creations, my experience turned out to be as sweet as the four vegan cinnamon rolls that I devoured.

The highlight of the four was definitely the Coffee Cake roll because of its subtle sweetness. The warmth of the roll had the coffee flavors just melt in my mouth.

The pie crumble also adds a savory flavor, canceling out whatever sweetness the coffee frosting had. Because of the muted sweet notes, the Coffee Cake roll is an ideal dessert for everyone, even non-sweets fans.

A close contender to the Coffee Cake roll, Blueberry Bliss lives up to its name. The tartness of the blueberry coupled with the sweetness of the cream cheese frosting is a classic combination that makes this roll work. The tartness hits your tongue first before being eased by the silkiness of the frosting. This is a dessert in which there is a perfect balance between the tartness and the sweetness.

Not to mention the pie crumble sprinkled on top adds another dimension of texture to this roll. Bite after bite, the Blueberry Bliss roll never gets tiring because of the taste and texture.

The S’mores roll is very one-note. It has all the components for a successful S’mores replication: the graham cracker bits, the marshmallows, and chocolate

sauce. But with one bite, I could tell something was missing right away -- the toastiness. Without this factor, it felt like the roll just gave me a pure sugar overload.

There was no kick to the dish like tartness or bitterness to surprise my taste buds. Because of this, later bites became overwhelming to the extent that I did not want to eat “some more.” The flavors were definitely good, but the S’mores roll is not the type of roll that is special enough to eat again.

The Peanut Butter & Jealous roll was by far the most disappointing menu item from the eatery. Although peanut butter and jelly compliment each other well in a classic sandwich, they do not mesh well at all on a cinnamon roll. The strawberry jam syrup drizzled on the roll is overly sweet and the peanut butter frosting isn’t salty enough to counterbalance it effectively. If you are craving peanut butter and jelly flavors, I recommend making a sandwich at home over buying The Peanut Butter & Jealous roll. Your time, your money, and your taste buds will be spared.

Despite the dissatisfaction I felt for the Peanut Butter & Jealous roll, my overall Cinnaholic experience was pleasant because of the favorable taste of the other three desserts, specifically the Coffee Cake and Blueberry Bliss rolls.

Although I only tried four of their specialty rolls, Cinnaholic allows its customers to customize everything, from the frosting to the toppings added. With the delicious flavors the rolls I tried had, I would definitely try a customized cinnamon vegan roll the next time I go to Cinnaholic.

he only role you can sink your teeth into is a cinnamon roll.”

The audience burst into raucous laughter at Daphne Davis’s aggressive dismissal of her wardrobe coordinator, Millicent Crump. Affronted, Crump fired back a weak retort that was ignored with a roll of Davis’s eyes. Davis, Studio 13’s one and only diva, dramatically flipped her hair behind her shoulder and bossily cued for the director to get on with filming.

Kasey Jacques, senior, although in a role so completely different from her normal, everyday self, revelled in the thrill of performing as Davis in Play Production’s recent Phantom of the Soap Opera.

Jacques’ love for the stage emerged when she was five years old. Her elementary school hosted a small-scale production of the musical The Wizard of Oz, in which Jacques played a scarlet Poppy. Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Lion stumble upon a field of these deathly sweet poppies on their way to Emerald City. Jacques was one of the many children in the crowd portraying a poppy, but this small role was enough to ignite a passion for performing.

“When you go up on stage and you get to play a part, you become another person; it isn’t just pretend. To be able to study something, make up a story, and become someone else is amazing. To take the audience on a journey and make them forget what is going on or make them feel something else, to have them enjoy and be immersed in a story...doing those things has always been fun,” Jacques said.

Following the epiphany, Jacques joined conservatory classes in singing, dancing, and acting at Tony-award winning musical theater South Coast Repertory (SCR) in Costa Mesa. Then, in eighth grade, she auditioned for the summer show, which she has participated in for the last five years. (In August 2017, she “exhibited a golden voice” as Rapunzel in Into the Woods, according to the Los Angeles Times.) Jacques is also a member of Broadway Artist Alliance after auditioning for a spot during her freshmen year. This experience created the opportunity to work with one of her favorite Broadway actresses, Annaleigh Ashford.

To supplement her conservatory classes, Jacques wanted to work on her acting, which led her to joining Play Production her freshman year. The class “gave her a place to fail, take risks, and not be judged by anyone with her acting. And it gave Jacques the closest friends at BOHS she ever had.” Play Production provided another outlet for Jacques to indulge in her passion for performing and her love of the stage.

Kim Ofcacek, drama teacher, said, “I know Kasey will succeed in the future because musical theater is something that she truly loves and she also has the dedication and talent needed to become a professional performer. She is not just someone who performs as a hobby or just for fun. This is Kasey’s life and she’s the type of person who will do whatever it takes to make it big now and in the future.”

Music and making people feel through her singing excites her. And adopting another persona onstage enthralls her like nothing else. But although Jacques had never felt so passionate about something, she originally did not believe “musical theatre actress” would be a viable career. Performing was meant to be a hobby. There were too many aspiring artists with big voices and big dreams. Compared to them, Jacques picked audition songs that were

too easy in fear that she would freeze up, or crack her note, or she would break character, or she would miss a step in the dance routine. According to her, she “would always mess up a performance”and she believed that she “just wasn’t good enough.”

That is, until she participated in OC Performing Art’s Shrek the Musical in July 2016.

Playing the lead, Fiona, alongside Hayden Mangum (‘17), who played Shrek, changed Jacques’ view on the role of musical theatre in her life. For the first time, Jacques embraced her talents and her character wholeheartedly.

Jacques threw aside all her hesitations and first focused on embodying what Fiona would do and what Fiona would say.

“Everything about that role pushed my capabilities: how high I had to belt, my tap dancing, having to make a fool out of myself onstage and be completely comfortable at the same time, even becoming a green ogre in 30 seconds,” Jacques said. “But everything the show threw at me, I took [on] and I was able to do it. Because able to conquer all of it, it gave me the confidence to say that I could definitely do what I love for a living!”

Jacques’ surge of confidence elevated all aspects of her Maintaining A’s while taking Advanced Musical Theatre lessons at SCR and performing on stage made Jacques realize that she is more capable than she thought.

This new confidence empowered her to take on lead roles for two of Play Production’s three shows in 2016-17. One of the two was Sophia in Fools and, fittingly, Dorothy in the musical The Wizard of Oz. Twelve years later, Jacques was no longer a poppy in a field of poppies, she was the star of the production. Her belief in herself carried her from being someone with a passion for the stage to someone who hopes to have a future career on Broadway.

Lynn Jacques, Kasey’s mother, said, “Musical theatre is an all encompassing performance art that requires 100% confidence in all three areas of singing, dancing, and acting. In college, Kasey will continue to grow as a performer by her stretching her vocal range and developing her acting and dancing abilities, [and] she will achieve her goal of being the triple threat she needs to become a formidable theatre performer.”

But for now, Broadway is still a faraway dream. Even though Jacques has already performed Broadway actors Roger Bart and Kerry Butler, Broadway is not yet in her reach. Until then, Jacques will focus on the present, honing her singing, dancing, and acting five times a week through private lessons and classes at SCR. She is currently auditioning for various college musical programs across the country.

Jacques knows she isn’t ready for Broadway yet, but she “doesn’t need to be ready for Broadway to get into college.” Jacques needs to show that she is “passionate about musical theatre, that she can keep up with extra curriculars and grades, and that she can have enough confidence in myself to take risks and not be afraid to fail.”

A chorus of claps reverberated in the BOHS PAC, signaling the end of Play Production’s first show of the year. The cast stood in a line ready to take their individual bows to the audience. When it was Jacques’ turn, she walked to the center of the stage, smiling at the fervor of the crowd. She gracefully bowed, enjoying the attention for her strong and confident reprisal of Davis.

This wasn’t her first stage and this was from from being her last stage. Now, with her engtire future ahead of her, the world is her stage.
