ART THROUGH THE AGES: Laurel Bathcelor, English teacher, holds the future textbook for AP Art History class, which she will teach in 2017-2018.

Beginning next year, students will be able to take an honors-level visual arts class for the first time at BOHS. “Over the years I have heard many discussions about AP Art History at BOHS, but for some reason we just didn’t have the class,” English Department Chair Laurel Batchelor, who spearheaded the course’s implementation, said. “I love visual media and literature and I have been so grateful to be able to teach AP Literature, which is why I am so excited to teach this course.”

With the support of Principal Jerry Halpin and Assistant Principal Joy Cordia, the school board approved the class in December.

According to Batchelor, students will learn a wide variety of mediums of art, such as paintings, drawing, sculpture, and architecture, while they also study the historical significance and context of the art. They will also visit art museums and galleries every quarter to further their understanding of art.

The course will be offered to 11th and 12th graders to fulfill their visual/performing arts UC/ CSU requirement. According to the curriculum, interested students are encouraged to earn an A or B in an AP History class or advanced visual arts class, or an A in a non-honors history, English, or foreign language class. As an Advanced Placement course, AP Art History is the equivalent of a two-

semester, college-level course, designed to “foster in-depth and holistic understanding of the history of art,” according to the AP Pacing Guide.

Given Brea’s widespread support for the artistic community (the Brea Art Gallery is a nationallyrecognized exhibit, and the city has a reputation “as one of North Orange County’s premiere cultural venues,” according to the OC Register), the course will also take advantage of the city’s local artists and their public works.

“Art is an expression of the creative soul,” Batchelor said. “It lets us see the world in a different way.”

BOHS currently has 16 visual arts classes, none of which are non-honors/AP courses and only 11 of which meet a UC/CSU requirement.

AP Art History will be the first in school history to be both an AP class and UC/CSU qualified class in the (F) visual arts requirement (AP Computer Science meets the (G) additional year of any class requirement).

“I’ve seen first-hand how powerful AP classes can be,” Batchelor, who also teaches AP Literature and Composition, said. “They allow students to be exposed to college-level classes while they are still in high school. Of course, the bonus includes college-level credit when students pass the AP tests in May.”

Brea celebrates one hundred years

“Oil, oranges, and opportunity,” reads a celebrational banner that hangs above Birch Street in Downtown Brea. On Feb 18., the city of Brea will commemorate 100 years and will spend the rest of the year ensuring its citizens are aware.

From this week to Nov. 19. the celebrations will include a community parade, art exhibitions, and theater performances with support from various sponsoring organizations and the Brea Centennial Steering Committee.

“The overall goal [of the celebration] is to celebrate Brea’s birthday and to keep [the city] moving forward by letting the younger people become aware of our traditions and pass it on,” Tim Harvey, a committee member and the vice president of the Brea Historical Society, said. “[With this celebration], we can learn more about the community during the course of the year and bring the community spirit on.”

Brea started as a large oil well, purchased by the Union Oil Company in 1894. The land prospered with an oil boom in 1898. A city began to form

with the Industrial Revolution in the early 20th century, with the formation of BOUSD in 1903 and a Chamber of Commerce a decade later. Brea officially became a city on February 23, 1917.

The centennial celebrations held in honor of Brea’s founding will begin with a large parade, picnic, and vintage movie exhibitions called The Birth of Motion Pictures: An Illustrated History of Silent Cinema 1910-1929 throughout the day on Feb. 18, followed by a city council meeting on

Feb. 23 with cakes, speeches, and a reveal of the preserved time capsule, located by the Brea War Memorial by the civic center.

During the summer, a baseball game with the Anaheim Angels against the Washington Nationals will be held at the Angels Stadium on July 18, continuing the celebration. A community festival will take place in August 18 as well as a gala and a youth art project on Oct. 15 and 21, respectively.

Theater performances of Brea’s beginnings will conclude the centennial celebrations in November.

The centennial celebrations are looking for participants and volunteers as well as donations from sponsors. The minimum sponsor price ranges from $100 to over $30,000. Higher contributions receive more benefits to the celebrations such as reserved seats, tickets to exhibitions, and promotions on social media.

“Lots of people in the community are volunteering [and the events are] supported by the city and a wonderful staff, [so the celebration] should be fun,” Harvey said.

Scouting the presidential inauguration

When Emma Wood, freshman, found out that she and her Girl Scouts would visit Washington D.C. on Jan. 18., it would mark not only her first time to visit the nation’s capital, but also her first time to attend a presidential inauguration “My experience at the inauguration of Donald Trump was something I’ll never forget,” Wood said. “I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to witness history in the making.”

After months of planning, the girls left Los Angeles International Airport on Jan.18 in a trip inspired by Troop 939 Leader Siobahn Hickey, according to the OC Register.

A total of 15 troops from Orange County travelled to see the inaugural event, becoming the “only registered, organized Girl Scout group from Orange, Los Angeles or San Diego counties to see the inauguration live,” according to Hickey.

During their four-day trip, they visited the Pentagon, WW2 Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and Washington Memorial.

cheering with huge smiles on their face. However, I also saw many people heartbroken and in tears, hugging their loved ones,” Wood said. “[I saw] a very large family who had been in tears throughout the inauguration joining hands after Trump had been sworn in. I could see the hurt and fear in their faces, but their small act of unity showed love and in a nation torn apart by political views.”

One of the main purposes of the trip was to “study women in politics,” according to Wood’s mother, Ellen. The girls met with female politicians both in California and D.C., such as Senator Janet Nguyen, and with a female colonel at the Pentagon.

Even though Wood opposes many of Trump’s controversial statements regarding women, Muslims, and other minorities, she believes that “spreading knowledge and protesting peacefully is crucial to keeping our country a safe place for people from all corners of the world.”

“I was so happy that Emma was going to witness political history. The political process and current events affects everyone’s lives,” Ellen said.

“It is our civic duty to be informed and to strive to make a positive impact on the world no matter how big or small.”

I

n recent news, the unexpected death of the beloved killer whale, Tilikum, has raised questions about the conditions of modern day zoos. While it was one of the most famous deaths of zoo animals, time has proven over and over again that it will not be the last.

While zoos have taken measures to lessen the severity of animal captivity by ending forced entertainment shows, the fact remains that animals are nonetheless still behind bars. Zoos continue to be regularly commercialized, and despite research proving that incarcerated animals face lower life expectancy, today’s society makes no effort to abandon animal captivity.

According to whalefacts.org, studies on killer whales have shown that in captivity, “most killer whales don’t live beyond their 20’s.” Although this greatly contrasts their average wild lifespan of 80 to 90 years, regular zoo visitors remain in a state of denial. People ignore the truth that animals do not belong in holding cells despite studies that prove imprisoning animals not only inhibits the length of their lifespans, but also the quality of their lives.

Also, besides the health consequences, the conditions of an animal’s “prison” cause further problems. Tilikum, the killer whale of SeaWorld that died on Jan. 6, especially has proven that zoos are not luxury hotels like the one depicted in the animated children’s fiction film, Madagascar.

Even seen in Madagascar, the captive zebra urges to be free in the wild, where he truly belongs.

“I believe in rescuing, [however], I just don’t think they need to be used for showcasing, or as a prop for a show,” Annie Strobel, sophomore and co-president of Club PAW, said. “Most of these animals have been taken from their home. They’re not dying or being killed by poaches or hunters,

but they’re not living either. They deserve to have a life in the wild.”

Last year, on May 28, Harambe, a western lowland gorilla of the Cincinnati Zoo, was killed by a worker when the gorilla dragged a young child that fell into his moat. According to the Cincinnati Zoo, “the child was in imminent danger,” which caused a staff worker to kill Harambe for fear of the child’s life.

It should be noticed that if Harambe, much like any other captive animal posed an “imminent” threat, why hold them hostage? If they are capable of endangering the lives of others, including young infants and children, why do we continue to endorse animal captivity?

Indeed, there are bars, glass, and other barriers

that separate humans from the imprisoned victims.

However, there is never a 100 percent guarantee that the bars won’t break, that the glass won’t crack, and that a person won’t fall into the literal hands of a live, captive animal. It is an urgent matter that not only endangers the lives of our own, but also the lives of defenseless animals as we continue to uphold and promote acts of enslavement and confinement.

But eliminating a factor of animal enslavement does not eliminate the threat of animal captivity altogether; it further prolongs animal captivity and the sentence of the imprisoned animals. Animal captivity is an unjustified enslavement of animals that demands the end of it altogether, and not just the promise of a better life.

he 1960s called weed the “doobie”.

In the ‘80s, it took on the name “pot”. Now, nearly 100 years after its initial prohibition by the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, smokers in California are calling marijuana “legal”.

After Colorado boasted an increase in their tax revenue and economic output because of their legalization of the drug, California decided that it was time to put the bill on the ballot. Though it was a movement long overdue, on Nov. 10, California became the fifth state (after Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Washington, D.C.) to legalize marijuana, opening the future to “weed shops” and a society more accepting of a predominantly innocuous drug.

But the road to legalizing weed in California was not easy. Critics against the relaxed rules of Prop. 64 think the state is on a spiral towards becoming completely impaired by the effects of marijuana. The Daily Californian labeled the drug “a magnet for [crime]”, and the LA Times called its legalization “a bad initiative”.

But these conservative opinions are rebuked once compared to the economic prosperity of the states that have already legalized marijuana. In a study published by Business Insider, California’s new regulation on weed is actually predicted to deliver increasing benefits, than when it was criminalized.

OC Weekly showed its public support for marijuana, publishing a “Toke of the Week” article, as well as promoting local weed dispensaries on their website. According to an OC Weekly issue, “the approval of Prop. 64 is a major milestone for the cannabis industry.”

Yet there are still antagonists who question whether Prop. 64 will benefit anyone other than “pot-heads”. To answer, all Californians, at least the ones that pay taxes, will experience

the financial benefits of legalization. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, the average U.S. taxpayer pays $31,286 per prison inmate. In 2015, there were 643,121 people arrested for the illegal possession of marijuana. When the cost of this incarceration cost is totalled, it’s surprising that California taxpayers hadn’t put the pieces together earlier. Now that Prop. 64 has passed, marijuanarelated arrests will significantly decrease, as will the amount of tax money owed by Californians.

Although the legalization of weed has broken in a path towards societal acceptance, those who wish to take advantage of the new rules must adhere to strict user-guidelines. Only adults over the age of 21 can now use, possess, and share marijuana, as well as grow it at home. There are also regulations in place regarding the legal amount that one person can possess (28.5 grams), and where he or she can and cannot smoke marijuana. Parallel to the rules of cigarettes, marijuana can only be smoked in areas designated by local ordinance.

But regardless of the new regulations, there is now a more accessible outlet to cannabis than ever.

Adults are free to cultivate it, and doctors are more comfortable issuing medical marijuana licenses.

Advocates of the newly passed Prop. 64 even include those are not yet able to utilize the right.

BOHS junior, Miles Reyes, expressed, “Many studies show the resounding effects of cannabis.

I see no reason as to why we should try to ban something that would ultimately benefit our quality of life. The legalization of weed is an essential step in advancing this era.”

Though California still has a ways to go before weed becomes as accepted as the common cigarette, citizens will still experience the significant benefits of its legalization. Though widely disputed, marijuana is likely to send the state of California on a journey towards greater economic stability, prosperity, less crowded prisons and jails, and a more open-to-change society.

I

n a nation splintered by Donald Trump’s election, Inauguration Day was a day of differences; more than half the nation dreaded the future ahead while the other half celebrated their new president. But a day after, on Jan. 21, Inauguration Day was eclipsed in both crowds and impact by the Women’s March, a movement that united all, not only under the promotion of women’s rights, but also religious tolerance, racial equality, immigration rights, and LBGTQ+ acceptance.

The Women’s March is recorded as the largest protest in U.S. history with over 2 million participants from a combined 675 marches stretching from Los Angeles to New York City (and even around the world), according to CNN. And in a state that is more ethnically diverse, more accepting of change, and more liberal than the rest, it is no surprise that the March on Los Angeles had the highest attendance of protesters -- an estimated 750,000 -- in the entire country, Washington D.C. boasting 590,000 marchers.

With an estimated 20,000 people at the OC Women’s March, as reported by ocwomensmarch. org, our own community revealed its power in number and voices. Orange County, at least on this day, united to dissent and to educate and to be heard. This demonsration, in our literal backyards, shows that we can make change happen and can make our voices heard.

This is especially important in the state of California, one of the few states that have a high percentage of democratic-identifying voters.

California has a heavily left-leaning and liberal state government.

In a state whose goals contrast so heavily with the goals of the federal government, the Women’s March served as an outlet to voice the unsurety, to voice the anger, and to voice the hope of a nation that is heavily divided. It is a historical feat, a milestone in the history of the U.S. that almost a million people rallied together to protest oppression. The Women’s Marches around the world were a true embodiment of the spirit of the American people who have always fought for what they know to be right.

But what happens next? What happens after the biggest protest in U.S. history? What happens after the loudest call of resistance to an administration only a day into their new office?

There’s a simple answer. The outrage and emotion must provoke a tangible political change, which for Californians, is to regain a Democratic majority in the Congress. The current government is dominated by the Republican Party, with a Republican dominated Congress, Supreme Court, and presidency. But on Nov. 6, 2018, 33 seats in the Senate, 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and 14 governerships will be open for re-election. This is the chance for Democrats to take back Congress.

Only by that happening can everyone’s human rights truly be protected and promoted.

One day of a nation’s united voice won’t be enough; this spirit needs to carry on through the days, weeks, and especially the years to come.

A Q&A with BOHS staff couples on what it’s like to work together.

How long have you been married?

J: 8 years When is your anniversary?

J: August 1, 2008 How did you meet?

J: We met when I needed to hire math and science teachers for a tutoring program and Mr. Cormier was a new science teacher at BJH. How long have you known each other?

J: 12 to13 years How would you describe your relationship?

J: I think we are a really great team. We play off each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We

pull together when we have challenges and when one feels weak, the other provides strength for the both of us.

How did you both come to BOHS? J: I was at [BOHS] first and Mr. Cormier was at the junior high.

They moved him to the high school to teach chemistry about eight months after we started dating.

What is it like to work with your spouse?

J: It really is fun. We share students and “teacher/staff friends”; it’s nice sharing the daily activities on campus together.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

J: A counselor’s day is never

typical! It depends on the time of year and if a crisis should arise.

Mr. Cormier has a more typical day with teaching.

What are some perks to working with your spouse?

J: It’s so nice to have our day in common-to share the happenings and news together. Since I job share, it also helps that Mr. Cormier can bring work home for me or get items that I may need.

What is your favorite part about working with your spouse?

J: I love seeing Mr. Cormier striding through campus and joking with his students. He really loves teaching and being a part of his students’ lives and it gives me joy to see that. That’s also the kind of dad he is. The other thing is that oftentimes people spend more time with their coworkers than their families due to the number of hours at work. I get to see my husband more and that makes me happy.

How do you separate work life from personal life both inside and outside school?

J: Sometimes this is difficult, because we carry the stress of the day home, but we work hard to leave it at the door and focus on our son and our family life at home.

How has working with your spouse changed your relationship?

J: I think it has made us closer because we work as a team not only at home, but here at school.

How do you handle family duties along with school duties? (ex. driving kids to school in the morning) J: We are lucky to have the support of my mom, who takes our son to school and picks him up on the days that I work. All other

tasks, Mr. Cormier and I try to divide up.

P: 17.5 years. July 3, 1999 How did you meet? How long have you known each other?

P: We met in 1997 at the Brea Track & Field Invitational when I was still coaching (and hosting the meet) at [BOHS] and he was coaching at Rosary/Servite.

How did you both come to BOHS? (Who came first and what led to the other to come after?)

P: I have been at BOHS since 1990. I previously “lived” in room 228 and taught math and was the girls’ head track and field and cross country coach. DV was a stockbroker and coached in the afternoons. After we had Tommy and Whitney, DV went back to school to get his teaching credential. In the world of teaching jobs, having an extra -- such as coaching -- is a huge help. So, when he started teaching and coaching at Canyon 11 years ago, I gave up coaching and transferred full time into activities here at BOHS. DV would have loved to start at BOHS, but at the time we didn’t take intern credentials and Canyon did. When a math position and track and field position opened up two years ago, he applied here and joined our staff.

What is it like to work with your spouse?

P: I actually rarely see him during the day unless I’m trying to find him or he is trying to find me. His classroom is in the new building

How do you handle family duties along with school duties? (ex. driving kids to school in the morning) P: We really have to look at schedules and see who has what “evening” events in any given week and plan ahead for kids’ activities.

He also makes their lunches every day -- which is a huge help since our kids like to eat and I am bad about thinking about lunches.

and I spend most of my day in the office. In the world of teaching, you interact with lots of students every day, but don’t always see to many other adults after you head into your room.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

P: I head out to school to arrive by about 6:30 [a.m.] with the “big kids”, teach ASB zero period, and then spend the rest of the day either working on planning upcoming events, solving problems or “putting out fires”, and doing supervision duty. At the end of the day, I leave and stop by to pick up our youngest son. His day is leaving by 7 to drop off the little guy so he can arrive no later than 7:30. He teaches four periods of math (1st to 4th period) and then has lunch/prep and ends with either cross country or track and field practice. He gets to take the big kids home with him when they are done.

What are some perks to working with your spouse?

P: Same school calendar is probably the biggest perk, especially since the kids are on the same one. Also, we are no longer league rivals.

What are some difficulties, if any, to working with your spouse?

P: Sometimes people will talk to

the other about solving an issue with the spouse when they should probably have brought that up to that person. (Getting paperwork turned in or something like that -minor things.)

How do you separate work life from personal life both inside and outside school?

P: Well, I’m kind of bossy both places. Seriously, though, it hasn’t really been a problem.

When he first started, he had lots of questions on how we handle certain situations at [BOHS] and sometimes I would just have to say “I’m at home & need a break right now...I just can’t do any more work today” and he would be patient about getting answers later.

What advice would you give to other couples who also work together?

P: I think they just have to know their work situation and know if they can handle it or not. It’s not like we work all day sitting next to each other, we work in the same school. I mean, in the school setting, you have teachers who are on staff together who don’t really even know each other because they work on opposite ends of the school and/or in different departments. Even though we work “together”, our jobs are pretty separated most of the time.

How long have you been married?

When is your anniversary?

Stephen: We have been married 20 years. We were married on Sept. 22, 1996. We were married on the beach in Maui.

How did you meet? How long have you known each other?

Stephen: We met at the bookstore at Cal State Fullerton. We became pretty good friends in September of 1995. We started dating on Jan. 22, 1996. We were married in September that year.

How would you describe your relationship?

Stephen: I would describe it as initially awesome.

Then hard. Then harder. Then awesome. We have experienced every aspect of life together and we had to survive some things.

Relationships are hard and marriage is really hard. But I can’t imagine doing this without Summer. The last 10 years have been crazyamazing. We fully believe in what we are doing and we are really enjoying it.

Summer: I think the big thing here is that halfway into our marriage we decided it would be based on God and glorifying Him as opposed to either one of us counting on the other for happiness. Our marriage became something in which we wanted to help the other get closer to God and call each other to a higher level of righteousness. Many people in OC will think that’s lame.

And 70 percent of OC marriages end in divorce.

How did you both come to BOHS? (Who came first and what led to the other to come after?)

Stephen: I got hired to teach here first in 1998. Summer came the next year. Although she went to school here so she technically was here long before me.

What is it like to work with your spouse?

Stephen: Working together has been natural. We worked together when we met at the bookstore and so it is something that we have done for most of our relationship.

From my perspective, we treat it like we work at different places 90 percent of the time. She has her job and coworkers and I have my job and coworkers. The 10 percent

centerspread is the really cool part. She can help me with things and I help her with stuff. We have the same work day and vacations. We 100 percent relate to each other’s job life because we do the same thing.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

Stephen: I show up at work and I teach AP Econ. I hang out with some teacher friends at snack. I coach soccer after lunch. For me, work is a job I do. I view teaching no differently that I view any other job on the planet. I have a skill.

I do it well. Somebody pays me to do it. I love teaching. But I do see it as an occupation. I think it is the dream job. I get paid to do something I really love doing. Not everyone on the planet pulls that combination off.

Summer: Everyday I hang out with kids and get to learn about them and from them. I get to show them that I care about them and will regardless of their thoughts about me or their thoughts about their education.

What are some difficulties, if any, to working with your spouse?

Summer: The only challenge we (I) had at the beginning was believing that my teaching methodology and philosophy should match Stephen’s and vice versa. When I realized I was being an idiot to believe that, working together became so easy.

Everything he said about vacation is true, but really just seeing him on campus is such a treat. What can I say? I’m in love.

What is your favorite part about working with your spouse?

Stephen: Favorite part is stopping by at lunch and just saying hello.

That is always cool. Having students who have her their junior year and then me for senior year.

We are so different that it is fun for me to watch students try to solve the equation of just how the heck did the two of us ever get married.

Summer: Hahahahaha. Yup, students are always expecting us to be the same, either in personality or in teaching methods.

We are very different and I believe

that is why we are such a powerful team on campus and within our marriage and family. Relational, being married to someone whose personality is not like mine in some respects totally works for us: I don’t want to be married to the male version of me. I need a spouse who has attributes and perspectives I don’t have. Stephen is my perfect complement, not duplicate.

How do you separate work life from personal life both inside and outside school?

Stephen: There is no separation; we are literally doing life together.

Working together is no different than going to a restaurant together.

We are the same people together at both of those places.

Summer: We’ve outgrown being duplicitous. I guess we are too old to put on a show on campus or off.

Plus, we are all in when it comes to our marriage -- that means I need to give 100 percent of my life to Stephen. Some say marriage is 50/50 -- I’ve found giving 100 percent of myself to Stephen, feelings, life ambitions, trust, energy has taken our marriage to a level that is unparalleled.

What advice would you give to other couples who also work together?

Summer: I think that marriages should be about loving someone -- not the conditional type of love. I don’t think conditional love is love anyway. It helps to remove the sense of entitlement and draws us closer to the love that was poured out on the cross of Jesus.

How do you handle family duties along with school duties?

Stephen: Honestly, Summer is the main one here. Because I coach here and I coach college soccer as well my schedule gets really tighter as far as external obligations.

So Summer handles the delivery of children to various locations.

When the older girls were babies I usually handled a.m. daycare and dropoffs and Summer handled p.m. pick-up. We honestly have long talks about how people with regular jobs do life. We can’t imagine it.

Our life and roles in our family are very biblically-based. People will mock us, call us what they will.

And still we are married when most in this county divorce for far less difficulties than Summer and I have faced in our 20 years.

Summer: We each do as much as we can. I take more traditional wife/mother roles (food prep, child care, house work) and Stephen works hard for us, prays for us, and handles all of the crazy stressful decisions about money and our family’s vision for the future. When one needs help, the other jumps in -- but the clear division of roles helps us to call each other to higher levels of performance in each of our spheres and keeps us from petty arguments about whose turn it was to make a dentist appointment or who forgot to pay the bills. Again, it’s biblically-based, and some will hate our structure for that reason alone. But I have one of the healthiest marriages I know.

We met at Cal State Fullerton in the credential program. We have been together for over five years.

How would you describe your relationship?

Loving, fun, silly, best friends.

How did you both come to BOHS? (Who came first and what led to the other to come

Mr. French was a sub in the district first. We ended up both completing our student teaching at BOHS. When the Life Skills program needed an additional teacher due to the large numbers, Mrs. French got hired in 2013. Then in 2014, when an SDC English position opened up, Mr. French got hired.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

We carpool to school together almost every day. Mr. French visits Mrs. French at snack to say hello.

We have lunch together one to two times a week.

What are some difficulties, if any, to working with your spouse?

Scheduling what time we want to leave school each day so we aren’t waiting around for each other.

What is your favorite part about working with your spouse?

My favorite part is knowing I have my best friend so close by if anything were to happen, both good and bad.

How do you separate work life from personal life both inside and outside school?

We try to not talk about work once we get home and when we are at work, we focus on the students.

January 20, 2017, may have been the day of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, but it was also the day Justine Barcelona, senior, learned about a peaceful demonstration -- the Women’s March -that would take place across the nation the next day.

With no handmade posters, nor political statement t-shirts, nor even a now-iconic pink “pussyhat” that would come to symbolize the passion of the Women’s March, Barcelona slipped on a pair of comfortable shoes, grabbed a small bag, and she and her mother drove to Los Angeles.

The persistent rainstorms throughout the week had subsided on that cold Saturday morning. By midday, the sun warmed the marchers and the only flood that day was a deluge of pink knitted hats that coursed through the streets of Pershing Square.

Organizers set up booths along the streets for unprepared demonstrators like Barcelona to create their own posters and signs as long as they provided the paper or cardboard. And from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Barcelona joined an estimated 750,000 demonstrators in their march throughout Pershing Square, according to the Los Angeles Times, while half a million demonstrators marched in Washington, D.C. That day, a total of two million demonstrators marched nationwide, and over three million demonstrators marched worldwide. The Women’s March would soon become the single largest day of demonstration in U.S. history, according to the New York Times.

“Seeing women coming together for one common cause and seeing that hundreds and thousands of people are all outside marching from every part of the nation and across the globe for what they believe in made me feel emotional,” Barcelona said. “I met some of the women at the march and I’ve heard their stories about their lives. I have learned that community, more than anything, is what helps people the most. Being surrounded by people who understand you and know what you’re going through can really make a difference in a person’s life.”

The Women’s March was not her first political demonstration. Barcelona’s family participated in the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011; last year, she joined in sister marches against the North Dakota Access Pipeline; and she regularly participates in Black Lives Matter marches.

But the Women’s March was especially motivating for Barcelona.

“Seeing the many different news of what Trump has on his agenda and the many changes that will affect women’s lives across the country is what inspired me to attend the Women’s March,” Barcelona said. “The most important thing I learned from this march is that female power is stronger than ever. Women all across the globe can make a difference, no matter where they are in the world. It’s important to know this, especially in a day and age where the expectations for women to perform are so

The Women’s March in Los Angeles was supposed to start at 9 a.m., but due to traffic- and crowd-control problems, demonstrators, such as Amber Tovar, senior, waited 45 minutes before they could begin their march from Downtown L.A. to City Hall. They didn’t reach City Hall until 12 p.m., in a walk that normally takes seven minutes.

Equipped with a small backpack, water, sunscreen, Advil, cash, and her ID, Tovar boarded a train that morning, along with her family members, to meet fellow demonstrators in L.A. Although this would be her first political march, she has been a passionate supporter for women’s rights long before President Trump’s inauguration.

“I felt a sense of obligation to attend because I knew that this was an opportunity for myself and others to show that we were serious in our efforts to drive out all the injustice surrounding the rights of women, Muslims, minorities, [and] the LGBT community,” Tovar said. “I knew that if I didn’t even at least try to go, I wouldn’t be satisfied within my efforts to practice what I preach. The march validated my feelings and beliefs about fighting for civil rights.

It wasn’t this eye-opening experience because I was already passionate about speaking out against the injustices the Women’s March protested. It proved that, despite how dark things seem to be going in terms of the outcome of the recent election, there is a significant amount of people banding together to stand up for what is fair and just.”

The Los Angeles Women’s March was not the only march in Southern California. The Orange County Women’s March drew tens of thousands of demonstrators, according to the OC Register, including teachers from BOHS. For Nadia Fox, French teacher, the Women’s March was a celebration of love and equality. Three generations of the Fox’s, along with her neighbor, participated in the Women’s March of Orange County, as Fox, her mother, and her triplets donned navy t-shirts that read, “A woman’s place is in the House and the Senate.”

Although Fox does not usually participate in marches, the positivity and safety of the Women’s March attracted her to join. As she and her family marched for an hour, she witnessed a diverse crowd among the marches, ranging from priests to war veterans. There was a sense of patience and goodnaturedness as marchers would “comment on each other’s babies and help the elderly and disabled navigate the large crowds,” according to Fox. The Women’s March aims to stand in solidarity in the fight to protect “our rights, our safety, our health, and our families,” according to their mission statement.

But according to Fox, the demonstration had different meanings for different people.

“Many of us have been fortunate to feel secure as women with mostly good men in our lives,” Fox said.

“Many marched to symbolize their love of diversity, their solidarity with their sisters who struggle with workplace inequality, double standards, and harassment. Others marched to support victims of abuse or those who were deflated by the President’s comments regarding women. I think many of the marchers participated symbolically to remember that we don’t take our freedoms and advancements for granted, out of appreciation for those who came before us and had to fight for so much that we overlook today.”

Critics claimed the March embraced so many diverse platforms, ranging from women’s healthcare to climate change to poverty to intersectional

supporters of the movement say: We’re just getting started.

“The challenge facing the organizers is how to channel the resolve and outrage of an organic protest into action that produces political change. That goal has eluded other popular movements, from Occupy Wall Street to Black Lives Matter. It is no less daunting now, given that Democrats were unable to defeat President Trump in 2016 despite an emerging demographic majority,” Susan Chira and Jonathan Martin wrote in the New York Times.

Fox believes that there are multiple ways to take the energy and spirit of the movement in order to progress the platform of the Women’s March.

“The next step is to have good conversations with people, to become more informed by reading

But Fox believes there is a way to avoid this.

“We have become disenchanted and complacent with our political system, and it’s our duty, as patriots, to stay informed, to take a more active role as citizens, to actually get out there and vote and to fight the psychological warfare and divisive nature that those in power (on both ends of the political spectrum) are using to benefit their own self interests,” Fox said.

“I am a moderate, and this march was far less about political parties as it was about coming together to celebrate women, the hard fought struggles of those who came before us and a celebration of diversity.”

In the aftermath of the March, after breaking historic records both locally and globally, many are left wondering what comes next. According to the New York Times, March organizers and participants met hours after the Women’s March on Washington to discuss future plans in a networking session titled, “Where do we go from here?” According to CNN,

various documents which carry minimal slant and sifting through a multitude of viewpoints objectively to be more comprehensively informed,” Fox said.

“We need to be united against the divisive groups which have polarized us over the years for their own pursuit of greed and power, and we need to let our leaders know that we are ultimately their bosses, not the other way around by calling our local leaders and statesmen when we support or reject their behaviors or policies. If we want good leaders, we need to be better people. We can be kinder to one another, spend more time learning about each other’s cultures, religions and geographical challenges, and learn to be more humble overall. Baby steps.”

As for Barcelona, the fight is far from over.

Her passion for civil rights will continue beyond marching and certainly beyond the Trump administration.

“Marching isn’t going to get us anywhere unless we take action and let our voices be heard,” Barcelona said. “The next step is to make a difference and get things done.”

s cool, white fog flows out of the nitrogen machines at Creamistry at Brea Plaza, customers have something to be entertained about during their wait. However, the true entertainers of this store are their made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream desserts, of which I ordered five -- Captain’s Breakfast Creation, Affogato, NitroDole, Strawberry Nitroshake, and Birthday Cake ice cream.

The highlight of the five was definitely the Captain’s Breakfast Creation because of the various flavors and textures that excited my tastebuds. The sundae contains scoops of Cap’N Crunch ice cream, strawberries, sliced bananas, and drizzled Nutella. These ingredients complement each other incredibly well in taste.

The first noticeable flavor of the sundae comes from the banana, but soon the crunch of the cereal kicks in and the sweetness of the Nutella fills the mouth. The velvety texture of the ice cream holds

everything together. The strawberries add a pop of tartness that counterbalances the otherwise sugary taste.

The Affogato consists of espresso poured over Madagascar Vanilla Bean ice cream with whipped cream and chocolate curls on top. This is a dessert where hot meets cold and bitter meets sweet.

Because of the vanilla ice cream, the espresso becomes milky and less intense, which makes it an ideal choice for non-coffee enthusiasts. Yet, the sweeter-than-usual taste may disappoint coffee fans.

The dairy-free NitroDole sorbet has a light texture and a refreshing pineapple taste. However, the fruity taste fades quickly and I found myself comparing the dessert to a watered-down version of the popular Dole Whip from Disneyland.

While I chose to add strawberries, I would not recommend to add it to the NitroDole because the two tart and tangy flavors make the sorbet way too sour.

The Strawberry Nitroshake tastes like generic Häagen-Dazs’ strawberry ice cream and the texture is too thick. It did not take me long to get sick of the shake. At an eight-dollar cost, I can list plenty of other things that I would rather spend my money on.

The Birthday Cake ice cream was the most unsatisfying order. The fruity pebbles overpowered the birthday cake flavor, but I was glad it did. The ice cream, by itself, tasted like a wanna-be vanilla ice cream with a horde of sprinkles. It reminds me of the icing on the sugar cookies sold at supermarkets. I find it quite ironic how mediocre this flavor is compared to its name. Seriously, where is the party?

Despite the disappointment I experienced for the Birthday Cake ice cream and the Strawberry Nitroshake, my overall Creamistry experience was pleasant because the favorable tastes of the other three desserts, especially Captain’s Breakfast Creation.

Whether it’s on a beautiful nature trail or in a high-stakes competition, Alison Crawford, senior, has a special place in her heart for horses.

ooves stomped noisily on the ground, kicking up whirlwinds of dust as Alison Crawford, senior, spurred her horse, Rembrant, faster to gain momentum for the jump. Then, with a lunge of Rembrant’s strong legs, it was like she was flying.

Initially, Crawford began as a dirtbiker, but when she sold her bike due to not having enough time to travel to the desert to ride, she began to search for another sport. Her current trainer, Terry Guerin, suggested that Crawford try horse riding at Crawford’s barn. A couple of weeks later, Crawford did just that. She immediately experienced the bond between rider and horse, which piqued her interest more than motorcross’s complete control of the bike ever did. So at 12 years old, Crawford discovered her love for horse riding.

Crawford participates in two categories of horse riding: hunting and show jumping. When hunting, a hunter’s horse remains at an upright position on the ground and is judged subjectively on suitability, style and movement, and overall performance quality. A jumper’s horse, on the other hand, jumps over a multitude of fences in a two point position and the performance is judged objectively on faults incurred for refusals, runouts, rail downs, falls, and seconds over the optimum time.

Crawford is both a hunter and jumper -- a hunter jumper -- but she prefers to jump because “it’s the coolest feeling ever” to “fly”.

Despite the differences between jumping and hunting, both have one commonality: the need to have a strong bond between rider and horse.

“I have to be in sync and patient with the horse in order to ride well and work as a team. It takes five steps to just go over one jump at a time, and most jumper classes have more than seven jumps in the course. So if you don’t get along with your horse, it’s going to be difficult. But when you do form that bond with a horse over time, it’s amazing,” Crawford said.

Crawford credits her performance at the 2013 Highland Riders Show in La Habra, Calif. as her most memorable moment as an equestrian athlete.

She placed as Reserve Champion and finished first in all her jumping and hunting classes, which included an obstacle course, walk, trot, and canter class. But her achievements couldn’t have been done without seven months of hard work with Rembrant to get him show-ready.

“Alison has developed the balance, strength, and timing one needs to achieve a solid partnership with her horse. She is effective in finding her way to the jump. Her drive, courage, and passion it takes to connect with a horse and bring out its best performance...she has it all. You can just tell by

Currently, Crawford is preparing to participate in classes at the United States Pony Club (USPC), an organization through which riders take written tests to move up levels and compete in larger shows. Until then, she will continue to practice three hours a day, three times a week at Equine Sports Therapy in La Habra Heights, and maintain a close partnership with her horse. She also plans to continue competing after high school.

“Alison is going to accomplish whatever she sets her mind to do; she is driven and determined.

Horse riding has taught Alison focus and discipline.

I know that she can accomplish great things if she works hard and never gives up,” Sandi Crawford, mother, said.

efying stereotypes about women’s physical strength, girls’ varsity wrestling competed in their first season ever in BOHS history.

The team is composed of ten athletes: juniors Jeniffer Haugen, Amy Ramirez, Madeleine Bustos, Julia Paquette, Bianca Guzman, and Alyssa Cerda; and sophomores Bailey Craig, Kalyssa Carlson, Ainslie Bernal, and Alayna La Rose.

Their head coach is Laura Anderson, a wrestler and graduate of Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Canada, who helped SFU to a fourth place finish at the Women’s College wrestling national championships in 2015. Anderson emphasizes that women are strong enough to wrestle at an elite level.

“As a woman, wrestling has taught me how powerful I could actually become if I gave myself the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture.

I want to teach what being strong means, both physically and mentally, which requires every moment in practice,” Anderson said.

According to a study by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) in the 2014-15 school year, as many as 11,496 female wrestlers competed across the nation. Boys’ wrestling, on the other hand, had 258,208 participants. But girls’ wrestling is growing in popularity, evidenced by the formation

of a team at BOHS. “Before, men didn’t actually believe that women could wrestle at a top, elite level. I think that seeing women compete at a national level changed a couple of things. People started to witness how technical and committed women could actually be in wrestling. [This interest in girls’ wrestling] helped Coach [Fergus] McTeggart’s and Coach [Brian] Schlueter’s efforts in creating a women’s wrestling team,” Anderson said.

To promote the girls’ wrestling team, Schlueter and a few wrestlers held demonstrations in the quad during lunch. But co-team captain Guzman still thought the sport would “not be [for her].” However, as she watched more videos of professional women wrestlers, she was increasingly “impressed and amazed”. This, along with her friends’ encouragement, lead her to join the team. Guzman believes it is an “amazing honor” to be apart of BOHS’s first ever girls’ wrestling team, and she is not the only one who feels this way.

“I decided to join the wrestling team because I saw it as a challenge some girls wouldn’t do. I’ve always been a thrill seeker and with my best friend by my side, I thought ‘Why not?’. Wrestling is hard and thrilling. Wrestling challenges my mind and it’s not just about winning, I’ve learned that you have to do the best you can and that’s all that matter,” co-team captain Craig said.

Despite the setback of fielding a team that boasted little previous wrestling experience, at Century League Finals on Feb. 1, Craig placed third in the 131 weight class, Paquette placed third in the 101 weight class, and Bustos and Ramirez placed first and second in the 126 weight class, respectively. This wasn’t enough for BOHS to wrest the title of league champions from El Modena, but clearly, the future ahead is promising.

And Guzman believes that positivity and support are essential in their growth as wrestlers and a team.

“As a team captain, I feel that it is my job to make sure the team is close; I want us to be a very tight unit. This is the first time any of us have been a part of a girls’ wrestling team, so it’s important that we support each other. It can be frustrating to lose in a match or not understand a certain move, so having each other’s back is essential in keeping our team positive and progressive [especially for next year’s season],” Guzman said.

Next season, Anderson plans to recruit more wrestlers in order to accomplish their ultimate goal: place first in CIF. Until then, girls’ wrestling remains hard at work in finishing their historymaking season.

“Girls’ wrestling is up and coming, and it’s terrific that we have young women who are willing to take up a new challenge,” Jill Matyuch, girls’ athletic director, said.
