Welcome to the Ring Creek Farms 9th Annual Bull Sale Len & Pat Friedel
Bruce & Brock Friedel
Welcome, Dear Friends As we prepare and plan for this Bull Sale, we do so with mixed emotions. The bulls offer powerful, proven genetics and we are proud and confident in their ability to contribute in any program. Many of the pedigrees are put together in a unique way and offer an opportunity to advance the most discerning breeding program. Our focus and selection has been on soundness, fertility and quality and each generation has achieved increased consistency, uniformity and predictability. Change is inevitable in any endeavour and in September we sold our entire cow herd including the bred yearling heifers. Their new home is at Lafond, Alberta on the Dave and Shelly Jean farm. The cows are great and most are represented in the pedigrees in this sale and by the reference sires in this catalogue. Life goes on and we are feeding the best set of yearling heifers we have ever owned. We would like to stop the clock but time and life are moving at warp speed. It is note worthy that every lot in this sale has been DNAed and parentage verified and you can have confidence in pedigree purity. We have really been blessed, the cattle have been fun, and the support of our family and friends and the cattleman and fellow breeders has been so rewarding. It has been a great run and you have made it possible. Come early to the sale and study the offering and be our guest for lunch. Our concern is your comfort and satisfaction and we guarantee you will enjoy the experience. We have saved the best for last. Sincerely The Friedels
Visitors are welcome to view the bulls at the farm, located 2 miles north of Fairview on #732 and 1/2 mile east on Township Road #822. Please join us for a Complimentary Lunch on Sale Day at 11:30 a.m. Every year we enjoy travelling north to view one of the great Angus cow herds that resides in Fairview, AB at Ring Creek Farms. We encourage you to take a serious look at this offering of select bulls as they are backed by some of the most sought after females and bloodlines in the industry. After their cow herd reduction sale a few year’s back, we continually hear from everyone that bought cows there that they wished they would’ve bought more as the Ring Creek genetics flat out work. The Friedel family are highly respected for their cattle breeding knowledge and the character they withhold makes it a pleasure to work with them annually. This year’s bull offering has the same strong genetics they have built their program on with profitability bred into them for their customers to capitalize on. Foot quality, structural soundness, muscle definition, natural shape and overall eye appeal backed by cow families with udder strength and bred for longevity is what excels this program. The 32 bulls on offer are the very elite and we feel that this is a great program to source your next sire(s) at with confidence. We thoroughly enjoy working with the Friedels as they are a “salt of the earth” family that has great cattle. We annually ask our good friend Colton Hamilton to come assist at this sale and he along with Matt and Scott will be attendance to represent your needs if you are unable to attend. We look forward to visiting with you at Ring Creek to take in the hospitality and a strong offering of bulls on offer.

The semen collection will be at Ring Creek Farms’ expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for Ring Creek Farms’ in herd use only. Expected Progeny Differences: Statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations. EPDs - Allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value, that animal’s value as a parent - Allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management - Are the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth - Help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits, carcass traits and reproductivity - Estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent assuming similar mates. EPDs EVALUATE GROUP AVERAGES AND OFFSPRING’S PERFORMANCE.THEY CANNOT PREDICT INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE ANDWEIGHTS To evaluate seed stock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs the concept of “intermediate optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic corrections - for example, intense selection for high yearling weights will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency.

Reference Sires Tiger is one of our feature herd sires and was purchased as a calf in Hamilton Farms 2007 Bull Sale for a record breaking $52,000.00 for one half interest. This bull represents all the qualities we are looking for in Angus cattle. He has been admired by many astute cattlemen for his correct structure, appealing muscle shape and proud character. He is sired by Kodiak 5R, who has become perhaps the greatest proginator in the Angus breed. Tiger’s show record may not be soon equalled but much greater and more important has been his breeding performance, siring so many high quality offspring, both sexes. When we first saw El Tigre 28U it was our conviction that he showed the same potential as TIGER 5T and it took $82,000.00 to purchase him (1/2 interest). He has developed into a mature athletic individual with great breeding capacity. He is very sound and Tiger and El Tigre are both about the best footed Angus cattle we have seen. El Tigre’s progeny, both sexes, are of very high quality and he is writing his own chapter in the Angus breed. Worthy of note, Dam HF Echo 84R established herself as a breeding powerhouse with these her first two calves. They are no accident and El Tigre 28U has attracted alot of attention by some very keen cattlemen with semen sales to numerous countries overseas such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Australia, and some European countries. Reference Sires Identity was the $59,000 top selling bull of the 2011 Koupals Angus Bull Sale. Identity is a sensibly sized Upward son with as much muscle and stoutness of bone as you will find. He uniquely combines his power and performance with a high degree of smoothness, eye appeal and correctness of structure. Identity’s mother is widely regarded as one of the top donor dams in the Koupal Angus herd. She is feminine, perfect uddered, moderate framed and easy fleshing. She has earned weaning ratios of 107 and yearling ratios of 108. Identity has a very gentle and easy going disposition.

We continue to use Prime Cut for his quality and soundness. He is a herd builder and his daughters are foundation females. Prime Cut has excellent muscle design and the fleshing ability the industry strives for. His sons are always favorites and his daughters are feminine, broody females with abundant milk and quality udders. These cattle are independent, low maintenance and very tough.

This young bull was the high seller at $27,000 in the Fleury Spring Bull Sale and exemplifies quality and style. He is very active and an aggressive breeder and serviced a group of heifers and cows in 2013 and will add correctness, balance and eye appeal. We expect he will sire good uniform calves. Reference Sires Ring Creek Hustle 1B has two big easy keeping Tiger Daughters close up in his pedigree and they are exceptional. They are sound, good footed, lots of depth and width back to front. Good udders, small teats and they milk volumes and wean heavy calves. Hustle 1B has six bull calves in the sale and they are all uniform and consistent, long bodied good quartered and correct. They have a lot of upside.

Eureka 62E is a young calf and was orphaned at at early age and after weaning he has shown compensatory gain. We believe he will be a good young sire and has a lot of up side. His cow family are big solid cows. Recommender for heifers or cows.
The Cowman
To be a modest cowman in Alberta, can be a trying time, With rising costs, gun control, and with increasing crime. With beef prices so unstable, makes long range goals a scramble. So raising cows in a mechanical world, has become a life long gamble. Ranching today is greatly different than in the past, When early cowmen rode a horse to face the stormy blasts. Today’s cowmen have the comfort of a heated truck each day, To check the cows in the calving field, and even to haul them hay. In this modern day of ranching, calving cows has seemed to change To get good weights at weaning time, so early calving is the game. To have young calves come in winter time, has created quite a test, With frozen teats and prolapsed cows, you’ll want to hear the rest. When things go wrong in this fickle world, it is easy to complain About government cuts, abortion costs and why it snows instead of rain. Each cowman should be thankful, that he can feel the morning breeze, And make a gather in the springtime, with a good horse between his knees. Things a cowman should consider, during his short time here on earth, Is the right to have a neighbour close, and what his friendship’s worth. Each cowmen should be reminded, that he has a spirit and a soul He will make it through those pearly gates, if he’ll let God take control. Hank Pallister
