Nutritionist Note

Heifers and bulls alike represent a great investment into the future generations of your herd, as such they are animals that we want to perform for many years to come. Similar to bulls, heifer development relies on proper balances between natural proteins and carbohydrates. This promotes maximum lean protein accretion (muscle development) which not only enhances the expression of the animal’s genetic potential but builds the underlying foundation of muscle that will carry the animal through lactation and successful breeding seasons. To further optimize vigor and immunity of the animal, it is the balance between trace minerals that affects absorption and maximum cellular function. Macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium are also adjusted for interactions with other minerals such as potassium, and balanced in ratios for optimal bone development. Additionally, these bulls were placed on a biotin program to ensure healthy hoof growth to ensure that he will walk the pastures and work in all situations. A smooth transition from one operation to another as your new sire begins to work is important for his longevity as he performs in your herd for years to come. Thus, proper nutrition for the bulls when they get home is critical. We recommend that bulls are put on to a similar ration as the lactating cows they will be breeding for at least 40 days prior to turn out. For heifers we recommend increasing the plain of nutrition (by giving slightly more grain for instance) 21 days before breeding and again when the bulls go out to optimize reproductive success. We recognize that this is not always possible as animals may be breeding for early January or even on grass. Therefore, Red Willow Ranch bulls and heifers will be on a high forage diet to match with breeding conditions as much as possible allowing for a smooth transition. At Red Willow Ranch, all animals have been developed on balanced and monitored rations from calves on the dam through to what you see today. Hard muscle, under a layer of conditioning is required to sustain both bulls and heifers through this breeding season and many more to come. We want satisfied customers to recognize the time and development that goes into making good seed stock animals, and come back for many more in the future. It is the careful monitoring of these animals’ development in cooperation with the nutritionist that makes them last.

Saj Mogul 42h

Mogul was a must-buy and we are sure glad he landed here. He’s everything we look for in a fullblood herd sire and his first calf crop is a true testament to what he brings to the table in terms of style, colour, and overall consistency within his progeny. The group of bulls sired by him is the most uniform group we feel we’ve offered on the fullblood side of things in a long time. They are similar in pattern to Mogul, exhibiting a super soggy, lengthy build. They’re sound, come with some stretch, and of course have that heavy haircoat and deep colour we strive for. They’re incredibly useful bulls that calve like a dream. We’ve really enjoyed watching these Mogul bulls and heifers develop over the year, and hope you’ll come see for yourself why we are so excited about the impact he has on our fullblood division.

Nug Dakota 249h

Dakota was a high selling bull from Maxwell Simmentals’ 2021 sale. We purchased him for his outcross pedigree and his highly maternal traits. Dakota’s mother was a cow that really impressed us. Unfortunately, we lost Dakota to an injury on his second year, before we could use him for that second breeding season. His progeny are extremely long bodied and will add length to your calf crop. They are heavy-haired and proud in their stature. The females are setting up a bright future here and we look forward to their impact on our herd in the coming years. Dakota has a solid offering of both bulls and heifers in the sale this year.

Probably the one bull that doesn’t require an introduction as the mark he has left on the Simmental industry speaks for itself. He’s done a pile of good for the breed and we never shy away from pulling his genetics from the tank at breeding season. He’s always been a go-to calving ease sire with progeny that continually grow into very marketable cattle. Lot 10, we feel, is one of the most exciting calving-ease candidates we’ve ever offered.

Just one bull on offer this year from this AI sire we really appreciate. Rio Grande brings outcross genetics and the main reason we used him was to add more of his females to our herd, and he has done exactly that. His females are near the top of our replacement pen. We can’t wait for their future here. His sons have been known to impress, showcasing style, prominent muscle pattern, and heavy haircoats.

POLLED

2023 marks his second calf crop to enter the sale ring and they’re about as good as you can make them. If you need hair, length, and great foot quality in your herd, check out his sire group. They’re thick, very dark red, and calve like a dream. Owned with Diamond K Cattle, Heritage continues to work 2 breeding seasons, servicing upwards of 90 head of cows and still holds his condition well.

Cinderalla Man

We purchased semen on Cinderella Man to greatly influence our red program. His dam, WFL Sage, has done great things within the breed and we wanted to add more of her influence into our program. After seeing him at stud we were quite impressed with his structural integrity and appreciated his width of top and the performance he possessed. The Cinderella Man progeny are among some of our top red bulls this year. They’re stylish, clean-fronted bulls with great hair and a prominent hip. His replacement heifers are also among some of our top reds, adding eye appeal and pen presence to our group of future herd building females.

Rwr Fireball 35b

Born in 2014, Fireball 35B was raised here and we were fortunate enough to keep part of him, along with Wallgren Farms. We must appreciate this bull’s mass and muscle pattern. He’s fluid in his movements and strides out effortlessly on a large, solid hoof. His calves come easily with tons of hair and are always an impressive sight to watch develop through the year. The females are extremely maternal, consistently ranking among the top of our producing red cows. We utilized Fireball on our commercials last spring and the calves hitting the ground this calving season are so impressive! Look to this bull’s progeny to add style, performance, hair, and longevity.

Muirheads Identity 229z

We’ve used Identity 229Z for a number of years in the heifer AI pen because he just plain works. His calves come unassisted and are full of vigour. We appreciate this bull for the concern-free calving he brings our heifers and for the growth he stamps his progeny with. His calves are clean fronted, long bodied, and hairy. A bull we would like to draw your attention to in the catalog is Lot 17.

Crossroad Connected 12g Rs

We continue to be thoroughly impressed with the amount of consistency in Connected’s progeny. They are some of the most powerfully constructed purebred bulls and heifers that we’ve raised, many coming with the ‘money stripe’ blaze and wicked haircoats. Both male and female groups are equally impressive, and we are so pleased with the calves from the get-go. The bred heifers that we’ve calved this year have been nothing short of impressive. They’re already well on their way to being those thick-made, performance producing, easy-fleshing momma cows that raise the good ones. Their udders are great and they’re a dream to handle. The group of calves sired by Connected this year bring muscle, mass, style, rib, and performance.

BJL MR. BRISK 34G RS

Brisk’s calves come easily with lots of vigour and grow like crazy. Not only do his bulls offer calving ease and explosive growth, but they also pack some performance and doability. Brisk 34G’s versatility and growthy calves make him more than just a heifer bull around here.
