I encourage you to come before the sale, walk through and study the bulls with me, so we can discuss what you’re looking for and help you find what you need to enhance your program. There’s no denying that 2021 was yet another year of uncertainty worldwide. More specifically, widespread drought on the prairies played no favorites. Yet since farmers and cattlemen number among the most eternally optimistic people on the planet, and with the resiliency that we’re known for, we focused on what we could control. Marginal cows made their way to town, as cow-calf producers were forced to tighten up their numbers. In the long run, this will rejuvenate the quality of our herds and increase the bottom line of the commercial cattleman. January and February brought big snow which will result in more moisture and better times around the corner this spring. Calf prices and feeder markets have gone up in the new year, and beef demand is at an all-time high. I believe that buying superior seed stock always pays off over time. Good cattle cost the same to feed as the poor ones, and will bring you a guaranteed larger return on investment. Over the past couple of years farmers and cattlemen have learned, more than ever, to be thankful for life in the country. We have our land, our livelihoods, and our cattle. We have our families and friends. Something as simple as a fellow cattleman stopping by to have a look and a visit continues to be a source of great pleasure. Ranchers and farmers are philosophical; we realize that some years are harder than others; it’s always been that way. It’s how we mark the decades. We share a coffee, a laugh, and a home cooked meal, and we talk about the seventies, the eighties, and 2015-2022. And we talk about our cattle. We know that success will follow struggle because we’ve lived through the cycles before. In the meantime, we will make the best choices we can, and look forward to the future. I had an interesting experience this fall, when I took a week to visit farmers in Quebec, some of whom have bought quite a few cattle from me over the years. I was treated to the best hospitality as we toured 13 cattle operations in a week. They appreciated that I made the trip and I enjoyed sharing cattle stories with them. At a recent family gathering it occurred to me, and I said to Sharon, “Our work here is done.” Our family have become good people and good friends with families of their own. Dan and his wife Olga, both Engineers, own IJack, an oilfield innovations company. Everything they sell is Dan’s invention. Together they’ve had tremendous success. They have three children: Vivian, John and Katie. Sean works out of Calgary as Chief Data Scientist for IJack. (Bachelor of Finance, U of S; MBA, Finance, U of C; Chartered Financial Analyst) The complexity of his work prevents us from knowing what he actually does, but Dan tells me that Sean does very impressive work. Sean’s wife Simina is a banking lawyer and partner with Burnet Duckworth & Palmer in Calgary. They have two sons: Jack and Shea. Sean and Simina are building a new house in Calgary as I write this, and have never been happier. Lauren met Charlie Power in Saskatoon when they were studying business at the U of S. Charlie was there on an athletic scholarship. It wasn’t long before they were studying each other. Upon graduation, Charlie was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders. Lauren moved to Calgary after acquiring her degree in Human Resources and Marketing. She has most recently been selling new builds for Sterling Homes. In August their daughter, Sunny James Power, was born. Charlie works for the family business in Calgary and Edmonton in the off season. My Mom celebrated her 102nd birthday this year. She still lives in her farmhouse. She’d enjoy a visit if you want to say hello on sale day. Delivery Options on USA cattle: 1) For buyers wishing to meet our trailer at Dunseith, MB, Portal ND or Raymond/Regway MT, we will attend to, and assist with, all necessary health testing, vet examinations, paperwork and obtaining your State permits associated to your export animals. A $300.00 US charge per animal will be paid by the purchaser at the time of settlement for their purchase. 2) For buyers from the North Eastern States, all purchases will be sent to H.S. Knill Co. Ltd, Paris, Ontario as soon as possible after the sale. Purchaser will then deal with the H.S. Knill trucking company. Knills will then do all health tests, customs paperwork, permits and make trucking arrangements; a process with which they are very familiar. The buyer is responsible for all costs incurred by H.S. ‘Shawshank’ is a feature bull. His dam, 99E, had my Lot #1 last year, Springcreek Estate 58H, that sold to Ashworth Simmentals and X-T for $70,000. Thanks to flushing, I was able to retain five daughters of 99E and they look super. The first calves from ‘Estate’ also look good. ‘Shawshank’ himself, out of a top cow, is very unique, having super numbers, great muscle expression, large scrotal and good disposition all in one package! I will be retaining some ‘in herd’ semen.

The Spring Creek Team (Team South Africa) Neels Janse van Rensburg and Gerrit Hayward immigrated to Canada a few years ago. Leaving behind friends and family, their journey has been one of courage and determination, which extends to their efforts here every day, especially in the bitter cold of winter during calving season. Every year that they’re here I appreciate them more. There’s no way I could run this operation without them. Both Neels and Gerrit, together with their wives Dire and Jo-Ann, made the very difficult choice to leave a homeland they loved to start over for the sake of their children, where they could grow up in safety and freedom. I know that tears of frustration and loneliness have been shed, and I salute them for so many reasons. In 2021 Gerrit asked me to bring young Sanguine Whitehead over and give him a chance in Canada. Sanguine has faced the same challenges as Neels and Gerrit, but he is doing it on his own. He’s persevering and will making his place in the agricultural community.
Megan, Jo-Ann and Gerrit. We didn’t give Jo-Ann much notice when we asked for a family picture for the catalog! Calving season is the wrong time to put a camera in front of Gerrit! Lol. Those of you who know Gerrit know that he has a big smile and is always ready to tease.
