On behalf of our Spring Creek family I welcome you to our annual In Pursuit of Perfection Bull Sale. Thank you to our customers, many of you good, solid repeat buyers, and some of you young couples just starting out on your exciting journey. Welcome to all of you and thank you for your interest in our bulls and our program. I believe that cultivating good relationships based on integrity and mutual respect will result in a win for all of us!

As I once again sit down to share my thoughts with you, what first comes to mind is that our bull selection and diversity has never been better. Whether you are looking for Simmental, Black Angus or Sim/Angus; blaze or solid color; calving ease or performance bulls, we have it all here. All of our bulls are Homo Polled, and the black bulls are identified for coat color status.

Here at Spring Creek our bulls are developed gently as we strive to provide herd bulls that work in today’s industry under real-world conditions. As breeders, our work begins long before your bull of choice is born, carefully layering genetics that will result in ideal females that will produce the kind of bulls that will make a difference for you at year end.

For almost fifty years our cowherd has been selected for optimal body type and size, concentrating on udder quality, soundness, fertility, and disposition. Their sons are thick sire prospects with lots of hair and testicle. I am especially proud of the sons of our two flush cows, Springcreek Brooke 68Z and Springcreek Abbey 99E. They have provided feature bulls for both the Red and Black Simmental sections.

Our Angus section is the strongest to date. I am known more for my Simmental cattle, but there are definitely breeder bulls available here for the Angus seed stock industry. I invite interested parties to study the depth and quality of my Angus herd. The majority of the bulls are sired by Mindbender and I am proud of their uniformity and their attractive phenotype. Once again we have six of the popular Sim/Angus bulls, also sired by Mindbender.

Events in 2020 have thrown all of us a curve ball, but we remain optimistic. Our industry has had a very successful fall sale season. We appreciate our livestock business and living in the country. As the calendar turns to a new year, may you and your family find good health and an appreciation of what truly matters. Our family continues to grow. Dan and his wife Olga run a thriving business at IJack Technologies in Moosomin where he designs and markets oilfield product innovations. Olga is also a photographer. They have three children: Vivian, John and Kate. Sean is Chief Data Scientist at IJack; he works out of Calgary. His wife Simina is a banking lawyer and partner with Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer.

They have two sons, Jack and Shea. Our daughter Lauren is an area manager for Sterling Homes in Calgary, selling new builds. Charlie Power wears #46 for the Stampeders when they play, and runs three businesses in Edmonton and Calgary with his dad and his brother. Grandma Frances turned 101 in December. She continues to live in her house on the farm.

As our Bull Sale approaches I wish to acknowledge Neels and Gerrit, who help run the ranch from day to day, season to season. The more they do, the less I do, and the more I like it!

We reserve the right to draw semen on any of the sale bulls for ‘in herd use’ at the buyer’s convenience and our cost.

Settlement, Delivery and After-Sale Options:

Option A: Purchasers wishing to pick up their bull on sale day will receive a $50.00 discount per individual purchased. Settlement will be made in full unless other arrangements have been made.

Option B: Purchasers may choose to leave their bull(s) on our ranch. Delivery is free to all points in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Arrangements can be made to all other destinations. All bulls are guaranteed exportable to the USA.

In Pursuit of Perfection Customer Care Programs IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. Purchaser must notify Spring Creek Simmentals, (306) 435-3590 immediately of any problems with or death of a purchased bull(s). Purchaser must employ a licensed veterinarian to treat, diagnose and/or fill out a vet form. If the animal dies, a postmortem may be required. Injury or death due to malicious, wilful or intentional acts or mistreatment by the purchaser or his employees is a fraudulent claim. In the event of mortality of a purchase bull, the seller’s credit responsibility will be limited to $20,000.00/bull or the purchase price if less. Delivery Options on USA cattle: 1) For buyers wishing to meet our trailer at Dunseith, MB, Portal ND or Raymond/Regway MT, we will attend to, and assist with, all necessary health testing, vet examinations, paperwork and obtaining your State permits associated to your export animals. A $300.00 US charge per animal will be paid by the purchaser at the time of settlement for their purchase.

2) For buyers from the North Eastern States, all purchases will be sent to H.S. Knill Co. Ltd, Paris, Ontario as soon as possible after the sale. Purchaser will then deal with the H.S. Knill trucking company. Knills will then do all health tests, customs paperwork, permits and make trucking arrangements; a process with which they are very familiar. 3) For buyers from the North Western States, health testing will be done at the Spring Creek Ranch and purchases will then be picked up by H.S. Knill Co. This is one of my very top bulls. If I were judging his pen, he would be hard to get around. His adjusted weights are over 900 lbs and nearly 1600 lbs. He has a good scrotal, is clean sheathed, and is very thick, with lots of middle. All of this in a Homo polled, homo black, baldy package. His dam just didn’t miss in her flushes. Retaining 100 doses of semen.

Every individual calf born from the ‘Structure x 99E’ cross was a good one. This doesn’t always happen. This may be the most loveable ‘pet’ we have ever raised! He will come to you on command! He has a little more birth weight, but he came out of a big cow that was dry the previous year. I think this adds to birthweight. Also, the research has shown us that IVF embryos are prone to more birthweight which isn’t transmittable or part of their genetic makeup.

This fella has had as many admirers in the pasture and the pen as any of the prospects. Blaze faced, homo polled/ homo black, out of a big bodied flush dam. I went back in the past a little and selected Advance to use on a flush as I just felt this combination would click. And it did, resulting in four calves and they are all top notch. If you have the time, take a trip to the open heifer pasture and see his two full sisters.

I could list a host of reasons why you should consider this son of Liner 56U and Springcreek Brooke 68Z. The influence of Brooke 68Z can easily be seen in her progeny and that of her sons. They all have that structural correctness and that proud look. Udder quality in 114H’s progeny has to be exceptional given his parents. This is a very interesting package. Combining Liner 56U and Brooke 68Z will work. It will be nice to see Brooke 68Z’s influence in the black business. The EPD’s on this individual are really impressive, in fact even more so than his red full brother, reflecting genomic enhancement. His gestation was 285 days.

This is my top bull in my opinion, and if he were not a 722 1476 Mindbender son, I would also be retaining an interest in him.

His EPD’s are very versatile and he comes from an excellent cow family. In fact his dam, grand dam and great grand dam are all still producing in my herd. Selling ½ interest, ½ possession. The buyer will take possession on May 1st of each year and the seller will winter the bull every year. This bull covers a lot of territory for me. His fresh pedigree and his top notch EPD’s are what is required. He combines excellent phenotype and can be used in the heifer pen and/or on cows. He had a short gestation of 271 days. His quiet, beautiful dam has calved every January, weaning one of the best. Both of her daughters have been retained and her 2019 son was my best bull calf that year, but was lost just before weaning. Her Final Answer dam was my top cow in her day and the foundation for my ‘Jaybird’ cow family.
