Who would have predicted 7 years ago the cattle market we are seeing at present day. WOW! Another spectacular bull sale season, followed by a much deserved spike in the commercial market. As I write this we are just starting to see some big yearling start to hit the sale rings, bringing dollars we haven’t even thought of. New levels seem to be very achievable every week, slaughter cows and bulls have remained steady to stronger all season, and the predictions for calves this fall looks extremely promising. Great times are ahead in the cattle industry, and with the prices we are obtaining, we have seen a record number of replacement heifers go to the feedlot. The numbers on both sides of the boarder simply aren’t there. We’re here for a good time, for a long time. There has never been a better reason to build your inventory, as we have less producers, catering to a bigger market. Welcome to our 7th annual Pasture Treasures Female Sale. When we made the decision to host our first annual female sale, we really thought about the concept, and what all we wanted to achieve with it. We know this time of year isn’t the most traditional time of year for production sales however we feel there are so many benefits to hosting it now. One of the major factors was to be able to present these sale cattle to you in working condition. These heifers are pastured right along with our replacement heifers; they are presented in grass flesh. No frills straight goods, with no surprises. Another major advantage is travel for both you and the livestock. No worries about driving icy roads or fighting snow storms. The cattle will have lots of time to get settled into their new environment, and not need to be transported when they are weeks away from calving. As well as you won’t be competing with tax dollars, now is the time to buy. One of the most important elements then, as well as now, is family oriented. We chose to host this sale during the summer break so that our kids and our 2

guests’ families could be involved. We run a family business, and are very proud of the interest our kids show in being involved. For anyone who has not attended in the past, I promise this is no ordinary sale. It is a true family event hosted in conjunction with our customer appreciation day, food, friends, good cattle and a good old fashion barn dance; quite simply it is a whole lot of fun. This years offering is very exciting for us, lots of different genetics, combined with our time tested bloodlines. You will notice when you thumb through this years’ offering several of the females will come from purchased dams. We hope this gives you a chance to have a bit more diversity in your selections, but also add to the fact that several of these cows were purchased from the front end of the various sales they were selected from. In essence we are trying to present you the best of the best. We also have a bigger influence from our guest consignors this year. They have dug deep into their programs to bring a strong representation from their own programs. This truly will be an outstanding group of females for you appraisal. Again this year we are teamed up with Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd, to offer you the utmost quality in health protocol, being one of only a few herds in Canada to be recognized as an Express Verified PLUS Herd. All eligible females will be identified with the Express Verified Seal in the corner of their photos. Bottom line of this program is it is added value to you our customers. The guest consignors’ cattle will all come under their own strict health programs, and I assure you that you can buy with the most confidence of getting quality for value at this sale. We hope you can make this event part of your plans this summer. This is a special time for us each year, as we are able to get our customers together for some good old fashion fun. “The Wooden Nickel Band” will be back again this year, and we encourage you to either bring your RV’s or grab a room in town, and enjoy this event to the fullest. He has been widely used in a variety of different herds, with very positive comments for the most part. He does have a bit of a unique blend of pedigree in the fact that his sire “Samurai” never truly got heavily exposed to the industry, and his dam being polled, has a very horned pedigree. “Elexis” has been the pillar in our Polled program, and has all the credentials you want in any cow, she is a treasure to say the least. She is a deep bodied broody cow, with a great top and tremendous muscle shape. Her offspring to date have averaged over $10,000, for us, and she is also a very solid color producer. (Check out her daughter lot #6 and granddaughter lot #2). To produce great bulls, you need great cows, and “Imax” is off of one of the best.

Treasure Chest Lot

The first year we did the sale, the Treasure lot was a last minute decision to add in before the catalogue went to print. It has become a mainstay of the sale, but always is a difficult decision as to what it will be, until this year! I came up with this decision last year, and it is a difficult one, but the time seems right. I truly feel as though I have out done myself this time. I have spoken with several people in the past, and stated that the year we make the Treasure lot #1 to be prepared for something extraordinary. Well Lot #1 is the Treasure lot. I know there will be a huge impact with this lot, not only for the purchaser, but the breed. Here are the rest of your clues. Don’t over think what it is, it’s much easier than it seems, if you read what i wrote. Look at all the clues very carefully; the answer is right in front of you. Don’t guess too quickly though, you are allowed 9 guesses, no More!

A sale this time of year is a bit tough to organize for, as these heifers make such dramatic changes from dry feed to grass, as they mature. “Zahara” is simply like a fine wine, as she does just get better and better every day, and bred back to “Imax” I think this will be a home run!!

I would say she is one of the best heifers we have offered, and is backed by one of our superb cow families. We actually have 3 full sisters in our own herd, one of which was one of Mackenzie’s 4-H cows, a full brother at Pools Arrow Ranch in BC and a half-sister at Wells Crossing. This is a never miss cow family as far back as you go. “Sassi” is going to be one of those females that you won’t really care if she gives you a heifer or a bull, they will be extremely marketable.This will be the last mating to “Razzmatazz”, however I wouldn’t be at all surprised her little sister by “Mojito” may be the feature lot in next years’ sale. Observed bred April 24, due Ultra sounded safe. “Lexus” isn’t the biggest heifer in the pen, but certainly has the credentials to do a big job. A Polled “Regio” daughter from our donor cow “Elexis”. Her dam has contributed greatly to our program in the last several years. We added her into our program as a mature cow, and she went directly to the donor pen. We first sold a flush on her for $12,500; she then produced 4 bull calves that averaged $10,775, one of which is “Imax”. She hasn’t slowed down from there. With the genetics, the polled factor, and the color, I really think “Lexus” has great potential. This is a really cool little female that may get a bit over looked. Be prepared.

He is an impressive individual that you can’t help but appreciate his sheer volume, and muscle mass. “Hallie” has a stacked pedigree, coming from my favorite “Legend” cow, going back to the great “Star Gazer” cow family. This is a female that I am quite certain has a great destiny, and I encourage you to be sure and study her closely, as I feel she will an outstanding investment.

I had originally picked out “Rumba” as a calf on grass to likely be our lead off heifer at this year’s sale. She was admired by virtually everyone who seen her last year, as she was a real standout. She is from our first calf crop off of “Maximus” and her dam “Tango” goes back to the great “Herlinde” cow family. Her grandmother “Linsay” has been a mainstay for us, and moved into the donor pen last fall. At the time of picturing unfortunately she got in a bit of a wreck and cut her hind leg. It’s very unfortunate that we were unable to picture her, as I stated she was slated to be the lead off lot, and very well still could be. When you consider her lineage, and how we have her bred back, I honestly don’t know if we have offered one with a more power packed pedigree than her. This is a female you will certainly want to have your hammer cocked for sale day. Video of this lot will be available online.

She is a powerful female with lots of growth, dark red and stylish. We have a very good cross section of “Windsurfer” calves on the ground this year, and he is a bull that will give you lots of power and performance. “Fergus” will do the same, and has the cow power behind her to match it. This female has a great set of feet and legs, and her dam is a cow that always delivers. Here’s an opportunity for you to be the first to own a “Windsurfer” daughter, and a dandy at that.

Last fall we had the misfortune of “Utah’s” dam breaking her shoulder, so she was not slated to be in the sale. Through a little luck and some TLC, her dam healed up, bred back, and looks to be fine, with a character limp. We since decided we could part with “Utah”. She may not have the chrome that some of the others have, but she does have the genetic makeup, and the cow family behind her to be a powerhouse. Her grandmothers (Emily, Emma, Aggie & Gundi) on her dam’s side were ALL donor cows. Her grandmother Emily produced 10 natural calves, and the ones we sold averaged $8300. This is an awesome young female that will do the job and then some. Just let her go to work for you, I promise you will be happy.

Her dam was purchased from DJ Farms in Ontario, and traces back to our great old “Dorothy Jane” cow family. This heifer has the pedigree, the type, and has had the look from the day she was born. Don’t get caught over thinking when she sells, she will be a license to print money.

We purchased “Wynonna’s” dam from the Norwood family in Ontario, and she has turned out to be a great investment. A real deep sided easy fleshing female, with a picture perfect udder. I anticipate “Wynonna” to develop to be the same. The “Mojito” daughters are most always heavily pigmented, and have very clean udders, and tend to be moderate framed, and really thick. with lots of style. “Wynonna” appears to have a touch more power, and should produce some outstanding bulls in her time. This past spring, “Tortuga” was our high selling bull going to Alta Genetics. As I had stated sale day he was a bull we really wanted to incorporate into our program, as he combines calving ease, superior growth, an outstanding pedigree, great muscle shape, polled, and he is a non-diluter. We were very fortunate when Alta told us to go ahead and use him until he was able to enter stud. We owe them a big thank you! You will notice there are a couple heifers bred a few days before the group was exposed, as we like to hand breed the first few to new bulls. “Tortuga” is a true breeding machine, much like his sire “Barbossa”. He could have easily handled a larger group, as he is a great breeder, his gentle disposition never changed, and he is producing extremely well now that he is in stud. We did AI a few to him, so for the most part they are a bit younger than the group, but appear to have the makings of being very good cows. “Shera” is a dark red female with a pigmented udder. She is really starting to come on now on grass, and I expect by sale day will be very easy to find. I have never been lucky enough to get a polled buckskin bull though. I can’t help but think for dollars invested this female could reap some of the hugest rewards. Being bred to “Tortuga” I would expect a dark red calf, but I would maybe dig back in time mating her and find something to produce that polled mellow yellow, he may be worth a lot more than you think.

This year is the first set of calves for us from “Epic” and I can honestly say he has blown past my expectations. I knew his calves would be good, but I wasn’t prepared for what we received. His calves have quickly risen to the top of the pen. When I first spotted him with his dam, I instantly liked him. I adore his dam, and we really wanted to add a “Colossal” son into our program, so he made a lot of sense for our herd. We only used him on a small number of heifers, all of which were “Barbossa” daughters, and that cross seems to have worked very well. This is the first calf crop for “King Louie”, and I am really impressed with the job he has done. He calves very well, and the calves have great growth. “Louie” himself is a nice framed bull, with a great set of feet, a big broad top, and is extremely deep sided and easy fleshing. He has a very likeable disposition, and looks to me as he is going to do many of the same things his sire “Stubby” does. From the calves we see on the ground he appears to work well with the “Wolfman” daughters, and I feel as though they are going to be a real solid combination.
