On behalf of everyone here at MRL we would like to welcome fellow seed stock producers and commercial cattlemen to Herdbuilders 2012 female sale. It is with mixed emotions we offer this group of tremendous bred heifers as well as the dispersal of our spring calving cows. For the past 10 years or so we have been telling ourselves when the cattle market hits its peak we want to have as many cow numbers as we can knowing full well with cattle numbers as low as they are North American wide the top prices are sure to last for several years. Well I don’t think we have hit the peak just yet but it isn’t far away. Prematurely we offer this group of cattle for no other reason than lack of manpower. This spring was a wakeup call with Lee undergoing knee surgery and no hired help that our workload is outnumbering man hours. Most people Mom and Dad’s age are retiring (although they show no sign of slowing up). Lee and Dave’s kids are running with sports and school. Where we are in the cattle business today, I guarantee over the next few years the cattle on offer December 8th will make their new owners money. We are by no means exiting the cattle business. We will still calve over 450 cows this winter and over 100 in our fall program. We truly believe over the next few years these hardworking ag people with cows will deservingly get their pay years like we have never seen it before. We do believe in the cattle business and its future.

As for the offering we have not had a female sale since 2007 and have been stacking our cowherd building cow families. We are at the point we can offer this group of females from the heart of our herd offering you our very best and females that would normally not be for sale. Progeny from our most prolific cow families and donor cows will be on offer. These are the sisters to the bulls that have been sought after each and every spring. The genetics are proven, industry leading and in many regards exclusive to only MRL and our customers. Whether you are looking to add 1 or 2 or a pasture full of heifers to your program the consistency is bred in and they will make a difference and keep your herd moving in the right direction and will all carry herd letters and genetics that will add value down the road. You’re not just buying another cow but part of a program! We will offer the first Red Angus females for sale this year as we have built our numbers to a more than satisfactory level. Just like the Simmental heifers we have used the most elite sires and mother cows in the breed. As always the purebred heifers are all AI bred to exclusive calving ease sires with no exposure. As well as the immortal Black Edition and exciting outcross sires such as Hoosier and Odin. All of these sires are proven calving ease sires with the very best donor cows in the breed as their dams. The calves these females are carrying all have the opportunity genetically and phenotypically to ring the bell and double your money or more within a year. We will also offer 20 Commercial Simm/Angus bred heifers bred Red Angus to start calving in February. This group of heifers are very similar in kind to our purebred heifers and are all home raised MRL females.

As for the complete dispersal of our spring calving cows they will sell in their entirety. Originally when we decided to offer cows in this sale this was not the group we intended on selling but because of manpower and timing they were the closest to home and easiest group to assemble. Following the winter of 2011, the most miserable on record we decided to hold back a core group of elite cows from our January/February calving cows to calve in April/May and establish a coming 2 year old bull program. We believe this has a lot of merit as the ranches get larger. This is the group of cows on offer. We are still wavering on the decision to sell these cows as they take the least amount of work and the calves look awesome. But it seems to be too late to turn back now so they will be there December 8. A fabulous set of young cows mated to the likes of the $44,000 Predator talk of the industry last spring, as well as MRL 25W purchased

by Remington in 2010 for $20,000 we were thrilled to get him back at their dispersal. His progeny are born small, docile tempered and show outstanding performance. The Red Angus cows are all bred to the $13,000 Six Mile Avatar our pick of their 2011 bull sale. Just like the bred heifers you are buying a herd of cows with some of our most elite genetics. They will pay their way in top seed stock operations and commercial cowherds.

December 8th will mark the largest and highest quality group of females ever offered for sale in the history of MRL. This opportunity won’t come along just everyday and may be a long while before it happens again.

As we work towards the sale, we are seeing strong calf prices and increased momentum in both the Simmental and Angus breeds while the livestock sector is continually seeing these breeds in high demand and quality females are hard to come by. The interest this year from breeders to acquire females has never been stronger and the MRL Herdbuilder 12 Sale has cattle to suit everyone’s market.

The MRL program is in the forefront of the industry as they have one of the strongest bull sales each and every year. This year’s female sale will present a great set of cattle from the heart of their herd that produce or are related to those big time herd sires they sell each and every year to the most astute cattleman north or south of the border. In a time where cattle numbers are low in the country and top end genetics are hard to acquire, sales like this don’t come by every day where quality in numbers are offered.

The MRL Ranch is among the most highly respected cattlemen in the industry that go and out-work any one out there. MRL has not held a female sale since 2007 and this is definitely one that will fulfill the needs of the most discriminating seed stock producer. The large group of bred heifers will be the front pasture kind and as has become the trend at MRL they will all be AIed to breed leading service sires. The spring cow offering is being offered to try and consolidate the workload slightly. These cows would not normally be in the sale pen if they were not eliminating one calving period. This will really be the first offering of Red Angus females from MRL and they are a very useful group, such as we have come to appreciate from their Red Angus bull offering.The 20 crossbred bred heifers will be the kind to make improvement in your commercial program.

Her mother has raised herdbulls for Roger Halstad in ND and Stacy Frewicks in SD in her young career and grandam has been outstanding. Predator’s progeny of course last spring were the talk of the town.

His son’s averaged almost $18,000 in our bull sale including the $48,000 Integrity herdbull to Ashworth Farm and Ranch. Not to mention the high selling bulls at Wheatland and for TSN and Downey Farms. We don’t offer the opportunity on these kinds of females very often fellas.
