It doesn’t seem like that long ago we were planning our 1st sale, it’s no wonder the grey hairs are starting to show up around the brim of our hats. To everyone who has purchased, bid on or showed an interest in our sales over the past 20 years we “Thank You” as your support of our breeding program has allowed us to expand and source the very top genetics in North America. A big part of the credit of the powerful group of individuals we offer for sale today is because of you “Our Customers”. It is very gratifying that many of the same outfits that supported our 1st sale and every year since will be a part of our 20th Annual and even outfits that purchased bulls from Dad 40 years ago still buy their bulls at MRL, many being the next generation. If you have been to all 20 of our bull sales or are interested for the first time, our 2014 offering is one you won’t want to miss. It is an exciting group of bulls. Large sire groups by the industry’s leading sires backed by our top cow families and consistent from pen to pen. Today our bull lineup offers more choices and cross breeding options than any other in the country from red, black and fullblood Fleck Simmentals to registered Red Angus and our Simm/Angus hybrid bulls. Be it calving ease or performance, red, black or blaze, Simm or Angus we’ve got it. As far as type, maternal values, quality and kind there is very little variance between any of the groups. Sound structured, moderate framed, stout made easy fleshing, herdbulls with excellent temperaments and thick hair coats and all backed by superior cow families is what you will find by the pen full. Check out the group of comin 2s for 2014 born on grass in May and June and gently developed and ready to pound the pasture. We think these bulls are a perfect fit for todays cattleman and if well accepted will offer more in coming years. Although a hectic time of year we always look forward to bull sale time as we reacquaint with old friends and customers and meet many new cattlemen each year in search for genetics to enhance their breeding program. As cattle producers we’ve been talking about it for the past several years and I think we can officially say that we’ve turned the corner and are entering the most exciting and rewarding times the cattle industry has even seen. Early in January and we’re seeing top end 7-8 weight steer calves bringing $1400!. Commercial bred heifers south of the 49th I’ve heard brining $2-3000. A 90 cent dollar and outlook for feed grain prices lower for the long term, the lowest number of breeding females since the 1950s, all things that will make the cow business get stronger and stronger and last a long time. If you’re in the cow business, Congratulations. Pull your hat down tight, get set deep in the saddle, and chuck the reins loose- it’s going to be a fun ride! We would like to personally congratulate the producers that stuck with it, persevered and made it to this point, we know as we make our living solely with our cow herd it has been a challenge. We would especially like to thank our repeat customers that have not waivered in their breeding philosophy and continued to purchase top bulls the past few years. Your hard work, foresight and excellent management decisions will pay big dividends over the next several years. Over the years we have met a tremendous amount of great people and are proud to have several of the top commercial operations from both sides of the 49th parallel participate in our bull sale. We have listened to our customers, as things change in the beef business we have tried to change with it. Cowherds are larger, manpower is declining and management strategies have changed. The genetics on offer March 1 are geared to work for todays cattleman. Our breeding program has concentrated on things like calving ease, vigour at birth, sound udders, temperament and maternal qualities. We believe these are some of the most important traits to any cattleman. We have certainly appreciated our breeding decisions this winter as our entire crew has consisted of Dad, Dave and myself. Over 300 calves born in the first 21 days of calving, as well as getting the cows all fed and this bull sale catalogue off to print, and mother nature seems to keep trying you every chance she gets from brutally cold, snow, wind and blizzard conditions. Plain and simply, we just don’t have time to pull calves, help them suck or get them going. Our outfit is no different than any of our bull customers, as herds get larger and manpower gets shorter. SIGHT UNSEEN PROGRAM
We would love to have you join us for our annual Bull Sale at the ranch. If you can not, this program has worked well for many busy cattlemen unable to make it to our sale. With families and a bunch of cows ourselves, we realize that with hockey, 4-H, chores, frozen water bowls, cows calving and everything else it is sometimes hard to be everywhere you want to be on certain days. Each and every year we sell more bulls through this program from clean across the country to next door neighbors. The program is simple. Call us in advance (preferably a week or so) before the sale to discuss your cowherd, breeding objectives and herd bull requirements. From what we gather from talking to you about your program, we can fit you with a herdsire or herd sires with in your price ranges and suited to your needs without you leaving home. The bulls will be personally hand picked by Lee, Dave or Jim. We are a family run operation so the same person helping you pick your bull is the same person who calves, breeds, feeds and lives with these herd bull prospects and their mothers year around. We know our cowherd very well and the genetics strength of each bull on offer. Just the same as you know yours. Almost 40 years in the bull business we have gained a level of trust and integrity with our customers and have had repeat customers buy their bulls here for years and not been to a sale yet. We will get you the best bull for your program as reasonably priced as we can - you have our word on that.

* Over 40 years in the bull business. Over 40 years we have been committed to and stuck to producing Simmental seed stock which Will work well under your commercial conditions. Easy fleshing, structurally sound beef cattle have always been #1 at MRL. *Customer Care. We will make sure you have a bull to breed your cows to. If you run into trouble, give us a call. We will have several insurance bulls at the ranch at all times and will get you a replacement bull as soon as you need one. We also have post sale delivery on offer. For those busy cattlemen unable to make it sale day, we offer a sight unseen buyers program and pre- selection program, as well as several sale consultants to leave an order with. *Quality Not Quantity. Our operation consists of over 600 working females. The 150 bulls on offer have been selected from 300 bull calves, therefore we can be very strict when selecting our offering. The toughest thing about our bull sale will be making up the sale order. Pens full of uniform 1⁄2 and 3⁄4 brothers. * Bull Development. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage, silage, grain and ground straw/hay ration plus minerals. This fella would have to rank as one of the feature bulls in the strongest set of black bulls we have ever offered for sale. Flawless phenotype, incredible numbers clean across the board, top 5% bw, top 30% performance and top 10% maternal of the entire breed. Just a mid February calf and actual 86lb bw and actual ww of 820 lbs start of Sept, ranking him 3rd of the entire group. His pedigree is pretty neat - a Destination out of an absolute stellar cow family with 5 generations of elite cows on the bottom side of the pedigree. His dam raised one of my personal favourite bulls last year as a heifer going to Westway Farms top breeding operation in Alberta for $13,000. The great grandam 590P was the dam of one of the popular Predator sons going to Fore See Cattle Co, AB for $14,750 last year as well.
