As I sit to write the welcome letter to our 10th Annual Bull Sale, I can’t believe how fast the last 10 years has gone by. It seems like just yesterday that we were anxiously planning our first sale hoping we had enough bulls to make a quality sale offering and hoping that people would like the cattle enough to come and buy them. Our philosophy has always been “We don’t want to just sell you a bull on sale day, we want to sell you bulls that make you more money - MORE POUNDS MORE PROFIT!” We are very proud of the fact that over the past 10 years, we have developed a large repeat clientele, and we hope we have added value to each and every program we have sold bulls to over the 10 years and have built a relationship of trust that we are supplying the very best Charolais genetics available!

We can honestly say we are extremely excited about this group of bulls as they are one of the stronger groups we have ever offered. In addition, we are excited to offer a new section to our sale which includes the offering of 50 two year old Red Simmental cross heifers with their tan Charolais calves at side, all sired by McLeod Livestock herd sires. Thanks to the Scott Anderson Bred Heifer program, they specifically synchronized a hand picked group of heifers to AI to McLeod Livestock herd sires. They then calved them out between Dec 26, 2022 and Jan 10, 2023. This entire group of 50 heifers along with their calves will be on offer in this year’s Bull Sale and will sell in groups of 3-5 heifers.

If the experts are right and Old Mother Nature gives us a helping hand, the guarded expectations for the 2023 fall commercial calf market could be extremely strong, and the commercial bred cow and heifer market could be headed for all time high levels in 2023 and 2024. But the one thing to always remember, when this market does reach new levels, quality cattle will be in more demand than ever so the decisions you have made over the last couple years and this spring will be reflected in the returns you will receive for the cattle you offer for sale in the future!

Take advantage of this incredible opportunity! 50 First Calf Simmental-cross heifers from Anderson Bred Heifers at Bowden, AB. These heifers calved between Dec 26/22 and Jan 10/23 and will be sold at the McLeod Livestock Bull Sale. They all will have 45 to 60 day old Char-cross calves at side sired by McLeod Livestock heifer bulls. These heifers were all hand selected in the spring of 2022, synchronized and AI’ed to Mcleod Livestock bulls on March 28, 2022. All the heifers that caught to the AI are on offer as no heifers have been retained or sold prior to this sale.

The pairs will be pre-sorted and sold in groups of 3 to 5 head per group. Trucks will be available at the sale if you are the successful bidder or if you are wanting to purchase these heifers to use as recips, these heifers can be hauled directly to Davis Rairdan Embryo Transplants.

The pairs will be at the sale in Olds for viewing all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning prior to the sale. If you would like to view the pairs prior to the sale, please contact Scott Anderson and he will be happy to have you come to his farm west of Bowden and look at them at your convenience.

In my welcome letter for the sale, I commented that we want our customers to trust that we are supplying the very best Charolais genetics available. Well, here is the proof as we present to you the first sons of SCX Jehu 233E. In the spring of 2021, I travelled to Manitoba to go see some bulls that I had heard about that were sired by an outcross herd sire named Jehu. When I got there and saw the sons from his first calf crop and then got to see Jehu himself, I instantly knew I needed to own this bull. Although at the time they wouldn’t sell me Jehu, I was able to secure an exclusive semen deal for the spring of 2021. Little did I know at the time, the bull would become available in his entirety in their dispersal sale in the fall of 2021 and that’s where the story get’s interesting. By this time the entire Charolais world had found out about Jehu and breeders from across the globe aliened to try and own this exceptional individual. Well to keep it short, at the end of the day Jehu sold for a new Canadian high selling record and we were the new owners along with our partners of White Lake Colony and Oberle’s Circle 7 Ranch.

We have since had many astute cattlemen come and see Jehu and the unanimous comment is always “What more could you ask for in a Charolais bull, he has it all!”

We are proud to present to you the first sons of Jehu at this year’s sale. As we say, “We don’t want to just sell you a bull on sale day, we want to sell you bulls that make you more money - MORE POUNDS MORE PROFIT!” We believe the Jehu sons can make everyone more money in their operation.

WHY IT’S VALUABLE TO SELECT CATTLE THAT HAVE BEEN 50K OR 100K TESTED

EPDs contain information from an animal's pedigree, performance and possibly DNA (50K/100K Testing) which are directly used to calculate the EPD for that animal in each specific trait. The use of DNA (50K/100K Testing) in the EPD calculation allows us to dramatically increase the accuracy of the EPD for animals that have been 50K/100K tested. These genomicallyenhanced EPDs allows us to greatly enhance our selection process and better predict the genetic potential of that animal, particularly in young cattle (calves, yearling bulls and heifers) that have no offspring to evaluate.

For example, in the evaluation of an Animal's DNA (50K test), it is roughly equivalent to the reporting of:

• 10 Offspring from the tested Animal when calculating Calving Ease

• 25 Offspring from the tested Animal when calculating Birth Weight

• 15 Offspring from the tested Animal when calculating Weaning Weight

• 8 Offspring from the tested Animal when calculating Yearling Weight

So in summary, it goes without saying that if you were selecting a bull for Calving Ease, it would be a lot more predictable to select a bull that already had information on 25 calves than a bull that didn’t have information on any calves and only relied on information from his sire and dam and his own birth weight.

He is sired by CML Anthem 20H who was a $25,000 high seller in our 2021 sale to White Lake Colony. His dam is a young donor female in our program that is out of RBM Fargo Y111 and the 2009 Agribition Reserve Champion Female, Elder’s Tessa 902W. Bankroll had an actual weaning weight of 1150 lbs and a weaning weight WPDA at 4.71 lbs/day. His EPD profile puts him in the top 20% for weaning weight, top 10% for yearling weight, top 45% for calving ease. This bull is a little bigger framed, extremely long bodied and has a haircoat that is second to none. We have had a couple of extremely successful commercial breeders walk in our bull pen and it is funny that their reaction was exactly the same when they saw this bull, and I quote “Now there is one hell of a bull!”

In 2020, we decide to keep CML Timeless 974G and use him in our own program. We believed he offered us an excellent calving ease option, he had impeccable feet and we knew his daughters would have exceptional udder quality and lots of milk. As a yearling, he ran with our yearling heifers as he offered Birth Weight numbers in the top 25% of the breed. Since that time, we have transitioned him into the cowherd and you will see he is the sire of the biggest sire group in the sale.

CML Timeless 974G has left us a consistent set of bulls with lots of hair and exceptionally pretty small heads. CML Timeless 974G is in the top 25% for birth weight, top 30% for calving ease and the top 35% for milk.
