Welcome Cattlemen and women . . . . . On behalf of Lockhart Valley Simmentals and Beagle Simmentals welcome to the 2017 edition of our sale. The Robsons and Beagles are very happy to have guest consignor Jenna Olson of Silvertop Simmentals back once again this year with a power stacked line-up of 4 top end black bulls along with 2 very nice black 4-H prospect heifers. In addition, we are very delighted to welcome Darryl and Sharon Williams of Beaverhead Ranches as first time contributors with 4 very solid calving ease bulls. We couldn’t be more appreciative of the support from our valued customers that we have received over the past 3 sales under this new format and for that we say thank-you! It seems no matter what the cattle industry wants throw at us one thing remains constant, good calves bring the premiums. We as a group believe that we have assembled a strong group of bulls with that in mind. We are again offering a wide variety of calving ease, power and combinations of both to varying degrees. It has always been our goal to bring quality over quantity and trust that you will find an affordable bull to fit your needs.

Hello and welcome to our 12th Annual Bull Sale. Wow! What can a person say about 2016 as a year in general. It was one of the most roller coaster rides we’ve ever been on. From worrying about drought in the spring, to never ending rain through the summer and fall, to a harvest that never seemed to end and still hasn’t for some. 2016 will go down in the books as a year we will all remember for a very long time. First, I would like to thank each and everyone who attend our bull sale last year, whether you were there in person or watched on the internet, your interest and support is greatly appreciated. Cull bull prices are holding steady, so now is the time to evaluate your bull pen and get rid of the older bulls, lame bulls or bulls who have just lost interest in their job. Our bull selection this year is heavy on the reds and blacks with just a couple of fullbloods. The offering we do have are a solid set of ranch type bulls. During summer months the bulls only have momma and grass to grow on, we don’t creep feed them, we like to see what mom and grass can do. As always we work with Brian Malmas from Wetaskiwin Co-op on a balanced ration for our bulls, heifers and cows. The bulls are fed a blend of cereal silage, bull pellets and oats. We believe yearling bulls need to be fit not fat, so they re in a large pen with plenty of room to get out and exercise. Lockhart Valley Simmentals knows that buying your next herd bull is a huge investment and it’s our intention to deliver the best product and customer service we can, to you. We would like to extend an invitation for you to join us at the farm on Saturday, March 4th at 1:00 p.m. Please stop by anytime for a visit and view the bulls. If you can’t make it to the sale, you can view it online at dlms.ca.

What can I say about Combustible? How about easy going, easy calving, great hair coat, big footed and moderate framed are a few things that come to mind. We have only two embryo calves on offer this spring from our donor cow LHVS 9W. We have sold a lot of sons out of 9W and they all have been tremendous bulls. Both are what we had hoped for in a mating between these two. Take your pick.

What a tank Captain Jack is. His body will rival any fullbloods with regards to length and muscle mass. He is as stout as they come. He was our heaviest calf at weaning at 1080 lbs. Captain Jack’s disposition is second to none, which is a trait gets from both parents. He’s black with that all important blaze. Captain Jack was a pasture favorite at the ASA Field day tour this summer. Homo-Polled and is a Red Carrier.

THE SHAG 42D
POLLED PUREBRED
Shed The Shag. There’s a story behind that name. Hannah was not fond of 42D in the spring because of his hair coat. Lee and I told her “Give him a chance, he will shed the shag”. The name stuck. She loves his hair coat now and she will fully admit that. Okay back to business. Shed the Shag is no slouch of a bull. Big footed, big nutted, lots of middle and as docile as a dog. His dam 9W was a big strong cow for a black cow. She had a tremendous udder and foot under her. If you are looking to add power to your black cows take a look at Shed The Shag. With 9W backing him, he should leave some awesome replacements for your herd. Homo-Polled and is a Red Carrier.

There’s 91 progeny registered out of Jenkins. Wow! This bull has been extremely hard to replace. He might be that bull that is a once in a lifetime deal. We drew quite a bit of semen on Jenkins but our supply is getting low. This year we have one son of offer and he is a gooder. Our Jenkins sons at last years sale were very well received with both being high sellers and they both went to very good commercial cattlemen. Some of our very best fullblood cows are out of Jenkins and he has always been our go to bull to make those good cows.

The Duke has some greats in his pedigree. Anchor “T” Rusty, Jahari, Rogant, Western 36R and Anchor “T” Legend. Duke is thick made, deep bodied with a big foot under him. He travels around the bull pen like a cat, very free moving individual. His dam is probably one of the nicest uddered cows we have as well as his grandam.

Man, you want to talk about middle on a bull, this guy fits the bill to a “T”. Davis is one thick tank of a bull. If you want pounds in the fall, take a look at Davis, he will accomplish this and more. His steers should really push the scale down and he should leave you good replacement females. His dam is a big broody Kiji The Rock cow. He also has a shot of Fullblood in his pedigree which also contributes to his power.

Similar to his siblings, but lighter in color with two small white socks on his hind feet, Deuce also has the volume in a smaller framed body. Deuce has a soft temperament and is easy to handle. He as well has that kick that comes from having fullbloods in his background. He is jam packed with greats like Anchor “T” Legend, Double Bar D Lincoln, Jenkins and Commander. As a funny side note on this bull, his nickname is “The Dink”. The reason being is that his calves are born on the small side, what some people would consider dink calves, hence the nickname. If you go by EPD’s then this bull ranks to 1% for calving ease at a +20 and -3.7 for birth weight. We never tested him for being homo-polled but in the three years since we’ve used 64A, he’s polled every calf. His babies might start out small but at the end of the day, they do have some performance to them. Take a look at his four sons we have on offer if you are looking for calving ease combined with some performance.

Here’s a prime example of what I meant in “The Dinks” footnotes. Deacon was born at 82 lbs and weaned off at . . . . wait for it . . . 920 lbs with no creep. Deacon is liver red with a crooked blaze face. He moves out on well shaped feet which is a trait of 64A. He’s moderate framed and has large testicles. Deacon would work very well on second calvers or a large well developed heifer.

This bulls dam is a neat little Crocket daughter. She’s not very big but has a neat and tidy udder. This calf also is liver red with a blaze face. 64A always seems to put a good hoof on his sons and dagger is a good example of that. Of all of 64A’s sons on offer this is the bull that we feel comfortable recommending as a heifer bull.

LHVS 16Z - Dam
This is the youngest bull in our offering this year. We used 64A as a clean-up bull on our cows and this striking looking bull is what we got. To say he’s cromed up would be an understatement. Black with two large goggles Deacon is definitely a handsome dude. His dam is a younger fullblood cow with a beautiful udder and feet. Because of his dam being older that’s why his birth weight is at 98 lbs. Deacon is a free moving bull that will sire some pretty showy 4H steers or heifers.

Django is one of Lee’s favorites in the pen this year. This bull is what I would call “Styling” He’s a sweetheart to be around and has the softest eyes. He always is up for a scratch or two. Django is out of a really good fullblood heifer who’s sire is a bull we purchased out of Agribition in 2012. Django is coal black with a few white hairs on his face. He has excellent feet and legs with large testicles. Django would work well on an Angus based herd, he’ll calve easy and put that added growth into his calves.

LHVS 9D - with Dam
Drake is a solid back bull out of a maternal sister to 9W. Drake weaned off at an impressive 1005 lbs. LHVS 51A is a small cow weighing only 1450 lbs, which means she weaned off 69% of her body weight, which is very impressive. Drake travels on big black feet and has big nuts. Drake is a very smooth made bull and you can sleep at night with no worries as to whether he’ll calve easy.

If you are only allowed to say one thing about “Lyle” it’s that he put the most beautiful udders on his daughters. They have style, great pigmentation and fantastic hair. Lyle has a very docile disposition and he passes that onto his offspring. We only have one son on offer this spring. Last years sons went to a good purebred herd and commercial breeder.

Deone is a very smooth made young bull. He has a lot of traits that his sire had, great hair and disposition. Deone is colored right and will leave you perfectly marked females or steers to market. Some of the high selling females at purebred or commercial sales were traditional marked Simmentals. Last Lyle bull calf to sell . . . ever, so look him over and mark him down in your catalogue on March 4.

Well here we are again already in our 3rd year of presenting to you the Lockhart Valley/Beagle Simmentals Bull Sale at the beautiful Lockhart Valley Ranch. I really didn’t know what to think when Lee and I first started to talk about putting on our own sale but I think so far so great!! This year began a bit of a new chapter for Beagle Simmentals as we have taken off the training wheels so to speak and decided to feed and develop our bulls at our farm. With the help of Kevin Cummings @ Country Junction Feeds (Wetaskiwin Co-op) we feel that we have given the bulls a very balanced ration of cereal silage, hay and specialized bull pellets to get the bulls to this point and ready to breed. The bulls are kept in a nice large pen where they get plenty of exercise. The bulls are also hand fed everyday often by my kids, and as such I did not hesitate to ship anything that even thought about lifting his head the wrong way, this is by far the most docile set of bulls we have raised. As you go through the catalog you will find a good variety of bulls in this year’s offering. In addition to the 10 bulls we are very proud to offer we have also had the opportunity to team up with Darryl and Deb Snider and boys of Snider’s Cattle Services on the ownership of Sniders Love Knot a real nice easy doing moderate framed cow who really got my attention at Anchor D’s Pasture Treasures Sale in 2015. We bred her to TNGL Grand Fortune and we couldn’t be happier with the result, Simple Plan was a class Grand Champion yearling bull this summer and hasn’t looked back since. We are a family ran operation, along with a growing herd of about 60 head of purebred simmental cattle, my dad and I run a 180 head commercial herd, and because we calve April and May we background all of the calves till about February and sell off the bigger steers, we then continue the rest of the calf crop on to grass as well as breed about 30 head of replacements. Being able to see calves through into several production streams, I believe it has given me a broader idea of how breeding bulls need to work and I am developing my purebred herd accordingly. Please consider this an invitation to join us March 4th, 2017 1:00pm at the Lockhart Valley Farm. If you have any questions about any of the bulls on offer, please do not hesitate to call. If you would like to see the bulls in the flesh, the coffee is always on. We are located just West of Rimbey 5 miles to RR33, North ½ mile to TWP 424A, West 1 mile to RR34, and North 1 mile to 2nd place on East side of road. Thanks and we’d love to see you on March 4th Chad and Michelle Beagle Keegan, Keston and Kacey

“ Detroit “ Is a very intriguing bull for us, out of a first calf heifer and our calving ease Westway 91Z bull I never expected to see this guy come on the scene like he did!! My pick of the pen is a very quiet soggy deep dark red bull that has developed into one of the best red bulls I have had the pleasure to raise. Great hair, nice feet, and testicles this guy should go out and do a great job. Detroit has the perfect combination of calving ease, birthweight and performance with a nice shot of fullblood in his pedigree only sweetens the pot. I would love to talk to the new owners about using this guy in the future.

Here is a paternal brother to Detroit another pleasant surprise in the bull pen. He again comes to you with calving ease on both sides of the pedigree. Domi is a big butted free moving bull that has a very balanced set of EPD’s. A moderately framed bull just seems like a real cow man’s or cow woman’s ranch bull. I definitely hesitate to label a bull a “heifer bull” and this guy is no different but he would do a great job on younger cows. Have a close look at him you wont be disappointed he is a bull that would work on any cow herd.

Duke is the first offering of our red herdsire McIntosh Red Lion who is a son of Usual Suspect and boasts quite a who’s who pedigree. A very appealing moderate framed bull that easily catches the eye of everybody who has toured the bulls. He is a very easy doing, fun to be around bull that is as docile as they come. Look for him to add style and thickness to his progeny. His dam has produced some very good sons and daughters for us and once again has a surefire bull calf this year that could very well be the lead off bull next year at this time.

Davenport is another Red Lion son that I really like. He is a really well put together bull who will do a bang up job for his new owner. This blazed faced bull really carries his thickness and muscle throughout. Versatility, performance and very marketable progeny are two things that really impress me about the Red Lion sons. Another very low maintenance, docile, big nutted, moderately framed bull that I can proudly stand behind. Have a real close look at this bull from all angles he is hard to fault. 36D is out of a very broody cow I bought as a heifer calf from Spring Lake and she has put some awesome daughters into our herd.

The final Red Lion son in this years offering is very similar to 36D. Another blaze faced bull that really carries himself freely on good legs and feet, has big testicles and is very docile so much that he loves to play, he’s a bit of a goof. He comes from a very honest good uddered and footed Anchor D cow that has also done a great job for us. This “Red Rocket” son is the result of a really nice moderate framed cow I bought at the M&S dispersal sale. One word that comes to mind when you see this guy is CHUNK.. This smaller framed bull is the youngest in the pen and if you want to add muscle, depth and thickness, and rib shape he is the bull for you. Davis is high percentage fullblood out of NUG MOSSEY a really easy doing bull with fantastic feet that I have used over the past few years and has also done a whale of a job on our commercial herd. This guy will definitely bring down your frame size and really add muscle and muscle expression in his calves, another guy that you will want to have a real close look at and make some notes on as he may be overlooked on sale day.

Dryden is a bull with just a bit more frame he has really developed well over the summer boasting a fantastic hip and rump that will without a doubt pass on to his calves. He comes from a really nice young low maintenance moderate framed and fantastic uddered Westway cow that I have really high hopes for. He’s colored up just right and again another bull that will work on a large variety of herds. He also weaned off as one of the very best rate of gain at weaning and couple that with a moderate birthweight and nice small head and shoulders there is a lot to like here.

Our only fullblood in the offering this year and I honestly couldn’t be happier with him. He has been plain good since the day he hit the ground. His dam has proven to be one of our most reliable cows. She produced my high selling BellRinger son to Alfred Lougheed 2 years ago. My fullblood numbers are quite low but this polled herdsire prospect has been one of my favorites all along. Good feet, length, depth, thickness, pigmentation and docility I am sure the new owner will be very happy with this young bull.

This calf is out of an amazing two year old, first calver with a great udder. Simple Plan is a Grand Fortune son and a total outcross pedigree in Canada. His EPD’s show that he is in the top 15% for calving ease and REA. Simple Plan has lots of extension in his frontend, loads of middle and his extraordinary structural soundness and ease of movement make him a unique herd bull. He is Homo Polled pending testing. Where this bull will shine is on 2nd and 3rd calvers, and you will keep every female he gives you. Our boys showed him this past Summer at YCS and he earned the titles Bull Calf Champion and Reserve Champion Bull. Simple Plan has a gentle and relaxed disposition that makes him very easy to work with. The Beagles and Sniders reserve the right to draw semen for in-herd use only.

Silvertop simmentals
Welcome to the 2017 edition of the Lockhart Valley / Beagle Simmentals Bull sale. I would like to thank Lee and Tina Robson of Lockhart Valley Simmentals for inviting me to participate in the sale once again this year. I would also like to thank Mark Kilar for purchasing “Foxy” and “Roxy” from last year’s sale. This year I have consigned 4 bulls and 2 select females to the sale. This will be my 4th year selling bulls and I can truly say this year’s offering is my best. I am extremely proud of these boys, and feel that they will work well for just about anyone. Just like in the years past, my bulls have been fed and housed with Lockhart’s bulls from the day they are weaned until sale day. They on a full herd health program and are fed a ration of cereal sileage, Wetaskiwin bull pellets and oats. I believe that genetics play a big role in the purebred business, so I have an AI and embryo program that I use to include new exciting genetics in my herd. The two heifers I will be selling are both halter broke and front pasture kind of girls. They are complete sweethearts that I am definitely struggling to part with. Please feel free to call anytime to discuss any questions you may have regarding the bulls or heifers on offer. If for any reason you cannot make it to the sale you can view it online through DLMS.ca. Good luck with your 2017 calving season and I hope to see you at the sale!

Here is a sale feature! Diesel has been a pen favourite since he was just a calf. This guy is solid black, built low to the ground and has a nicely set head and neck which follow down a wide top, ending in a very well-muscled hind end. He has a beautiful hair coat and big solid feet. The pedigree on this bull is definitely one that will catch your eye. On his top side, is no other than “Harvie JDF Wallbanger 111X”, whose progeny proved themselves when they were top sellers and class winners in the 2012-13 show and sale season. On his bottom side, is Lockhart Valley’s beautiful black baldy donor cow, “LHVS 9W” who definitely speaks for herself. Diesel’s weaning weight was 1030 lbs. Use this big boy to increase weaning weights and pump out stylish “front pasture” calves. Purebred breeders should take a hard look at this bull on sale day. Tested Heterozygous Polled and has the Red Carrier gene

Silvertop Domino 12D has looked like a true bull since the day he was born. He was one of the first calves I got out of our newest herdsire, “Dale”. Domino is a very well built calf. He has a good temperament on him, which seems to be a trait his sire passes along to his calves. I’ve always really liked Domino for his body depth, thickness and great feet. His dam, “LHVS Willow 12W”, has been a top producer for me, year after year. Her calves are either in the bull pen or replacement heifer pen. “This guy is a maternal brother to “Silvertop Cash” whom I sold in the 2014 edition of the Cutting Edge Bull sale.” Domino has the chrome that could definitely be passed on to make some stylish, eye catching 4-H steers and heifers that will get noticed in the show ring. Tested Homo Polled and has the Red Carrier gene

AKA “Dale”, we purchased this guy as the high seller from the Pheasantdale Cattle Co. Bull and Female sale in 2015. Dale is a very thick made bull with lots of depth and muscling. He is 7 generations polled, 4 generations black and 3 generations of blaze face dams. I have had one group of calves of this big guy so far, and I could not be any happier with them. His calves have lots of eye appeal, great temperaments and unreal feet.

Silvertop Duramax 16D is from a big, strong, dark red SU Jenkins fullblood cow, who was one of the few kept back from my Grandpa’s herd dispersal. Duramax is the complete package with good body length, temperament and testicles, along with the perfect white blaze. He had a birth weight of 96 lbs and weaning weight of 960 lbs. Duramas should sire great quality, eye appealing calves. Commercial breeders take a look; this guy should not disappoint.

Duke is a moderate framed, classy looking bull that I have become very fond of. This guy is solid black with a litte white mark on his head to give him his own unique touch. If you’re looking for muscle, you will definitely want to take a close look at this bull on sale day. Duke has an excellent hair coat ang good testicle development. His dam is a picture perfect SU Jenkins fullblood cow, who raised the reserve grand champion steer in the Red Deer and District 4-H show. Commercial breders looking to cross their Angus based herd with a black Simmental, look no further. He will add pounds to your weaning weights and leave awesome replacements. COMMERCIAL HEIFER
Silvertop Gucci is a female that I am not overly excited about selling. She is the kind of girl
Sire of Commercial Lots
that should be staying home, but will make a great addition to the sale. Gucci is a super sound female that has impeccable feet and a functional frame. If this heifer follows in the footsteps of her dam, she should head straight to the dairy barn. She is halter broke, and the “in your pocket” type. If you’re looking for a replacement heifer that has the look and structure to be a big time producer, make sure to take a good look at this girl on sale day.

COMMERCIAL HEIFER
Momma cow is written all over this heifer. She is extremely
large middled with big rib shape. Prada is all about the power and correctness. With her fantastic hair coat and straight lines, she really is the complete package. This girl will add some new blood to your herd, and turn into a top end brood cow. Silvertop Prada 10D is halter broke, and is very gentle. If you are in search of a show heifer for a junior, look no further. This heifer will be an asset to any herd.

BEAVER HEAD RANCHES LTD. Our family have been good friends with Lee and Tina Robson for many years. They invited us to participate in their sale this year. We have been breeding Simmental for many years and our ranch produced BHL Western 36R and BHL Regent 3H, two good Fleckvieh bulls. Recently we have concentrated on using Red and Black factor sires, noted for calving ease and maternal traits.
