Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 43rd Annual Spring Bull and Female Sale, Friday, March 3, 2023 at Johnstones Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw, SK, on #1 highway, north side of the road.
We would like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from our past sales. Your continued support and effort to attend our sales is very appreciated. Lots of our past customers have become good and close friends over the years and that is very important to us as well. The sales just don’t happen without a strong support at home either. First of all, I’d like to thank my wife Brenda, for her sharing me with the Simmental breed, she has spent many a night alone while I was visiting customers, going to a sale or show. I’ve put a lot of miles on in the last 50 years going to Simmental functions. I would like to thank my son, Lynlee for taking care of the grain side of our farm and looking after our 400 commercial cow herd. His wife Hayley, is a real asset to LaBatte Simmentals as well, her and the boys are willing to help anytime, she gets the Simmsational heifers ready, helps me with the ads and marketing. Wade Lund has also contributed, been a great asset to the success of LaBatte Simmentals. He’s been with us for 22 years now and his loyalty and dedication are greatly appreciated. Also, our night calving watchmen, Dale Ehrhardt has been here many years. He kinda retired this spring but I got him talked into coming again this winter. Our oldest grandson Brodyn is off to college in Olds, AB right now. He has a lot of interest in continuing LaBatte Simmentals in the future. It takes a whole team to make these farms and cattle operations work and we’re lucky to have a great team.
Again, we welcome our guest consignor East Poplar Simmentals, Kyron and Kelsey Manske. They will be bringing about 20 black and red simmental bulls to the sale. Firstly they are great people, they’re dedicated to the Simmental breed and raising the right kind of cattle. They’ve been building numbers, buying new genetics and purchasing semen packs on some of the elite Simmental bulls in the business. Them and their two young girls will help lead the great Simmental breed into the future along with so many young breeders that are doing a great job continuing the legacy of Simmentals.
Our offering consists of red, black and fullblood bulls and 10 top quality open heifers. Our red pen again is one of the strongest ever, led by our new exciting red herdsire, Perks Potent 309H, the highest selling bull from Perkins Land and Cattle. His calves are everything we thought they would be and even better. Again, a super set of bull calves out of the easy calving WLB Top Tier 456G bull, these calves come easy, are stout made and some are blazed faced. Also, a few IPU Dillinger 80B sons. This 2Y son is the go-to calving ease specialist and daughters are beautiful uddered. The black program is led by RF Caliber 014G, the $150,000 Structure son that sold in Rancier’s bull sale in 2021. This bull is the real deal, siring awesome bulls and heifers. We were lucky enough to purchase a semen deal on him and we couldn’t be happier. This bull has a bright future ahead of him. The fullbloods are led by Elevation, French Attack and Canon sons, some polled. They’re colored right and are thick and soggy. The 10 heifers are a great bunch led by a homozygous polled full fleck heifer. The reds are outstanding as a group and the black are very good too.

Health: All bulls will be scrotal measured and palpated. Bulls over 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested. Bulls under 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested prior to delivery. Weights will be posted sale day. All bulls and heifers were given Cattlemaster 4, Somnustar PH and Fortress 7 in June and boostered with same in September. All were treated with Ivomec Pour-on in September and January.
Delivery: At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will take the purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will work with you to help coordinate delivery. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.
US Delivery: For our U.S. buyers that live in the Dakota’s and Montana, we offer free delivery to central points and if possible right to your yard. For bulls going to other destinations we will work with you making arrangements. We look after and pay for all paperwork crossing the border and do offer a sight unseen purchase program.

Perks Potent 309H has exceeded all our expectations. We purchased him along with Circle 7 Ranch (The Oberle’s) out of the Perkin Land & Cattle Co. sale in Manitoba. Darren Pagent told me about this bull in January that year. A few days later I went and seen him and wow!
Thick, deep, dark red, great haired and a real herdbull presence about him. I had Wilf Davis go and look at him too. He too was impressed, so we waited through all of the spring sales sitting on our hands waiting for Potent to sell mid March. In a hotly contested battle we manage to get him for $70,000. One of the best herdsire investments we’ve made.
Potent is siring thick, deep, soggy, good haired bulls that will highlight our bull sale this year. There will be about 18 sons in the sale this year, many of them features. As an added bonus his mother is an outstanding female that is in Daryl’s donor program. Potent has a different pedigree than most cattle giving us the opportunity to breed any cow in the herd to him. He will be leading our genetics into the future!

We’re starting off the red section of our sale with a Potent son that we think is one of the best bulls we’ve ever raised. He weaned off his mother at 990 lbs and had an Adj 205 day weight of 900 lbs. He is super stout, deep and soggy, long, great testicle development and structurally correct. He also has that herd bull presence and look about him which I think is very important. His dam has never missed, she just had her seventh consecutive calf a few days ago. In last years sale, a Brooks daughter of hers was our high selling red heifer selling to Crossroad Farms for $11,000. This is her third son to go through the ring at our bull sale. We believe this bull is exactly what the Simmental industry wants now. He has the power, performance, and the look we are wanting.

Another excellent Potent bull out of Hayley’s 6A cow who has done a great job for her. She’s due shortly to have her ninth calf in a row. That’s fertility! This Potent son is as dark as they come, very smooth, long, big top, stylish and has an excellent disposition. I would keep every heifer off him as with 6A, the females should be keepers. He has a nice 90lb birthweight, really good set of EPD’s – just a really good bull.

Here’s a commercial man’s dream bull that will raise these soggy heavy steers that are so in demand today. He’s half Fleckvieh, full of meat and muscle, great haired, dark red and has a nice blaze on his head. We bred a few Fleck cows to Potent and you can see here the results.
His mother is a really nice, good uddered Black Gold Elevation Fleck cow that in last years sale her Philosophy son sold to Reiten Holdings of Gladmar, SK. 37K will be noticed sale day and if you’re into EPD’s he is above average in 12 of the 13 traits. A smooth made Potent son out of a great uddered Bootlegger dam going back to the IPU Touchless 69U cow that Hay Valley Ranches purchased from us. This calf has a great hair coat, really smooth made through the front, nice headed and stout made. He would sire a great set of steers and heifer calves that would be highly sought after by the order buyers and feedlots.

Again, another real sale feature! A Potent son out of the great Horizon 21A cow who is the mother of IPU Lieutenant 24E also. 114K is an embryo calf and we have two really good full sisters to him in the replacement pen. This powerful bull is the real deal. He had an actual weaning weight of 965lbs and an adjusted weaning weight of 906 lbs, now that’s performance in a year that our pastures were not good as we were in another drought year. We love how smooth he is, his muscle shape, depth of body, his overall length, has a great hip and stands on a good set of feet and legs. His mother is probably the best Horizon cow we own, beautiful udder, deep and exceptionally long. Just a real brood cow. She will be entering our transplant program again this year. So if you’re looking for a herdbull to put power, muscle and length into your calf crop, 114K is the bull.

A grandson of the great IPU 52N Pocahontas 2Y cow. Her daughter, a Springcreek Spark Plug female is a really nice female, she’s good uddered, very feminine and stylish. This is her third bull calf we sold through our bull sale both going to really good commercial operations, Wayne Peterson of Ogema, SK and RBD Ranch, Dean and Barry McKim of Milestone, SK. 99K has a nice low birth weight and a super set of EPD’s. You’ll want to keep all of his heifers and put them in the replacement pen. With his pedigree and type he’s a no miss bull.

A dark cherry Potent son out of a good Kuntz Sheriff cow that has done it before. Her first son to sell through the bull sale was IPU Dillinger 14E, the bull that’s done such a great job for Lockhart Valley Simmentals of Rimbey, AB, the Robson family - Lee Tina and Hannah. He was an IPU Dillinger son. She’s since put three more sons into commercial herds and now coming with her fifth bull to go through this sale. That’s production! Again, another bull with a super set of EPD’s, all above average but one. If I had some white or tan Charolais cows and wanted to make some tans and add some maternal value to your heifer calves, this is a bull to look at.
This is a bull we are high on too. He’s been a great calf right from a young fellow. He’s really thick, deep ribbed, big topped, dark colored and has a great hair coat. His mother is a Northern Red daughter, she has produced another really good one. Her first son to go through the sale was her first calf an Exceed son, that was really nice made and sold to Redrich Farms, the Dietrich family from Forestburg, AB. Combine 028F and Perks Potent and boom! This calf has a lot of potential whether it be to a purebred breeder or a good commercial operation. I think with this offering of Potent sons, you can see what he’s doing for our program.

Again, another half Fleckvieh red polled son by Potent. That combination has really worked. His Fleck mother is a really good polled Guerrero daughter with a good udder. I really like these half Fleck, red and black females. They are producers. 131K is dark red with a little blaze on his face, he’s deep and thick and again has a really good set of EPD’s. He should sire those deep, thick performance calves that top the calf sales at the auction marts and fill your keeper heifer pen with his daughters.

A really stylish Potent son that’s thick made, moderate, good haired and just catches your eye in the bull pen all the time. His mother is a good uddered Cpt. Scream daughter out of the great Pocahontas 68M. This cow family has had a big impact on our red program. We’ve got four full sisters to the dam of 187K. This guy will raise those fancy steer calves that the auction marts talk about and a great set of replacement heifers.

A bigger framed bull, deep, thick, lots of bone and good haired. His mother is a good Kuntz Sheriff daughter. The Sheriff cows really produce and add calving ease into their progeny. 175K has again a great set of EPD’s with ranking in the top 50% in 12 of the 13 traits. He again is going to sire those calves that are going to bring the commercial man and woman a premium on their calves.
Rodney was one of the finest men I’ve ever known. He was a mentor and a special friend of mine. Rodney and John Owen started Transon Livestock back in the ‘60’s. They managed many many sales for me before selling the management to Bob James and Jay Good.
He always saw the good in people and never degraded anyone. He was positive and entusiastic. He believed in and supported me immensely. His motivation helped me to succeed, I hoped he realized the influence he had.

We couldn’t be happier with the Top Tier progeny. He’s done a great job of adding calving ease, blaze faces and quality in the calf crops. We’re having the third year of the Top Tier calves this spring and will continue to use him. He calves great, but also adds shape and muscle to his calves. Last year’s bull sale his first sons were really accepted well.

This is an awesome Dillinger calf. One of our favorites in the pen. He’s dark red, really thick and big topped, has a little blaze and style to burn. Just been a good calf from day one. A super thick, stout Betts bull that is the third full brother listed in our bull sale. In last years sale his brother was one of our feature red bulls but unfortunately got injured and took some time recovering. He will be used in our program this year. Another good full brother sold to the Stolson’s at Hodgeville, SK. 142K is moderate made, thick - thick, maybe the stoutest bull in the sale, he’s blaze faced also. If you’re wanting to add some muscle and duability to your heard, he’s the one.
We believe Caliber 014G is going to move our black program ahead immensely. We are very impressed with his first calf crop both bulls and heifers. We and Lewis Farms purchased the Canadian semen rights from KT Ranches and Canadian sires after they purchased him out of the Rancier Farms bull sale for $150,000.

Another good Caliber son out of a Priority dam, going back to the great cow we purchased from the D Bar C dispersal, Black Satin 680S. She had eleven calves in a row before we sold her at an old age. Her udder was still absolutely perfect. We have three daughters of hers in the herd. She’s also the granddam of R Plus Venom 4006B, the great breeding bull at R+ Simmentals. A really stout made Caliber bull out of the big volume broody cow we bought as a calf out of the Black Diamond dispersal in Manitoba, we purchased her and her mother that day as they were in a fall calving program. She’s had seven progenies in a row. A really thick stout black Betts son that Brodyn and I own together. We bought his dam out of the Agribition Sale from Czech-Mate Livestock. She goes back to the famous Soda Pop cow family. We have had a good Cowboy Cut daughter of hers in the herd, then 22K and now in mid January a Black Cinch bull calf. You really have to appreciate 22K for his thickness, depth, big top and excellent haircoat. He has a nice 80 lb birthweight and a calving ease number in the top 30% of the breed. He’s an outcross pedigree for the blacks and could be used in the heifer pen possibly.

The only half blood in the offering, a Rainfall son out of a first calf Bentley daughter. We will be ramping up our half blood program as we will be breeding about 15 1/2 blood females this spring. A real smooth made Monument son out of a really nice Bentley cow going back to the Ms. Blake cow who is in our flush program. We bought a small semen pack of Monument from JP Livestock in the spring of 2021. He’s a black bull with an outcross pedigree being out of the calving ease red bull WS Epic. He has really nice numbers and is a calving ease bull. We bred some of our heifers and an odd cow to him with good results. 89K himself had a nice moderate birthweight of 88lbs and weaned off his mother at just under 900 lbs.

Another black calving ease prospect. He was purchased in dam from Perkin Land & Cattle Co. by Wilf Davies for me at the Pembina Triangle sale in November 2021. His mother is a beautiful uddered baldy Remington Lock N Load first calf heifer. An outcross pedigree as there is a very little Lock N Load in Canada and Epic is the proven calving ease red bull in the red division of simmentals. This is a bull we forgot to test for homo polled when we were pulling hair on the bulls. There’s a really good chance he is homo polled, as his sire is homo and the two sires in the bottom of his pedigree are homo polled too. This bull is just a really nice balanced individual. This mid March son is the last calf born at our place in 2022. His mother was in our flush program and resulted in her getting bred late. This stylish, blaze faced bull is sired by Genesis, a bull Darren Pagent bought us out of the last Skor bull consignment. He’s a homo polled, homo black Captain Morgan’s son. We used him to clean up a few cows in May. 224K is a maternal brother to the IPU Black Cinch 95G, the $50,000 Springcreek Liner son and in this years sale the 125K bull. His mother is definitely one of our favorites. He’ll sire some blaze faced calves, that chrome that’s so popular these days bringing a premium when they’re sold. His females should be really good if they’re anything like his mother. He’s young but has a lot of potential.
The cow herd utilizes organic minerals that are used to ensure proper immune function, and overall health of the mother cows and progeny. The bulls feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and rumen health. The bulls are developed on grass with their mothers, and then moved onto a balanced high forage ration that promotes lean muscle growth. Organic minerals are also used in the bulls ration to maximize the overall nutritional health and development.

Kelly Oberle and ourselves have bought a couple of full blood heifers together, both from the good people at Black Gold Simmentals and they have turned out very well. 117K’s dam is a special cow, polled, dark cherry red, beautiful udder and is going to be a producer. Her last years bull was our feature fullblood bull, a polled Battle Cry son that was awesome, he too was blood red. We never got him to pass a semen test before the sale so we kept him back. He passed this summer and hopefully will get some semen drawn on him. Another Full Fleckvieh polled bull sired by Elevation. Black Gold Elevation has done quite a job for us. We were fortunate to get a semen pack on him from Beechinor Brothers. He sires good bulls and excellent females. He’s really good on color and adds performance as well. His mother was the highest selling female we bought out of the Gagnon Sale in 2018. She’s a big, broody cow that’s very easy fleshing. She raised a polled legend daughter for us as a first calf heifer. We sold her as a bred heifer at Simmsational for $15,000 to Skywest Simmentals, Didsbury, AB. 144K also has a really nice balance set a EPD’s.

Another really good Elevation son out of an Eclectic female. He’s hairy, dark red, goggle-eyed and full of meat and muscle. He’s structurally correct with good dark red hooves and moves very well. This is his mother’s seventh consecutive calf in a row. One of her daughters sold in this year Simmsational sale to City View Simmentals, the Barnetts, Moose Jaw, SK for $12,500 as a bred heifer. Put this bull on black or red Angus cows and get the blaze faces on them, they’d be pretty valuable. Our girls, Embrie and Eva, are growing like crazy and it is a blessing to watch them develop into their own personalities. Embrie is loving learning new and exciting things in pre k this year and it was fun to have her in the barn this fall helping with the show and sale heifers. As we come into 2023 there have been some major changes in the cattle business in the last couple of years. Multiple years of drought with many producers drastically reducing their herds or dispersing entirely have shaken up the status quo in the business and reduced the total herd. Although this has been a tough couple of years for producers, I can’t help but be optimistic about the next few. Current steer prices are the highest they’ve been since 2015 and many are projecting calves to be close to or over $2000 this fall. All we need now is rain!
I am excited about this years bull pen and feel it is one of our strongest and most consistent to date. The Betts and Lieutenant bulls are as strong an consistent as ever and we feel these are the type of cattle that have a lot to offer the industry as a whole. We have a number of females milking off of both of these sire groups now and we feel that have as much maternal power as they do on the terminal side. On the black bull side of things we have a couple of powerful Man O’ War bulls again as well as a new sire group off of our walking herd sire R Plus “Union” 0140H. We’re also quite excited about the half blood bulls we have on offer.
All the bulls are on our herd health program and will be semen tested and guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, but we do ask that any bulls that come back to our place for wintering are insured. Most of the bulls in our offering have been homo polled and homo black tested.

A real deep bodied Lieutenant son here who I think is going to make his new owner very happy. We have used Lieutenant for a couple of years now and are very happy with the job he has done and especially the type of females he is leaving us. Here is a long bodied and complete bull that puts it all together nicely. Out of a direct daughter of the Pashmenia 403P donor cow that left a big impact on the LaBatte and Meadow Acres herds.
This guy is a tank. He is one of those bulls that catches your eye as soon as you walk in the pen. When you get behind this meat machine and you have to appreciate his width and how he carries his muscling deep into his quarter. He is big barrel ribbed and has great hair. In this business we talk a lot about consistency and how cows can produce from year to year. 204E is one of those cows that just cranks it out year after year. This is her fourth bull we have sold off of her in a row and they have all been at the top of our pen each year and 274K is no exception to this. Another attractive Betts bull that we really like. 282K is smooth shouldered and extended through his front third. You also have to appreciate his muscle expression and how deep ribbed and flanked he is. I’ll be honest, I was hoping this guy was going to come out black when I bred his El Tigre dam to Betts, but when they look this good it doesn’t matter what color they are.

This is our first calf crop out of our new herdsire R Plus “Union” 0140H that we purchased with Townview Farms and we are impressed. The bulls are masculine and have good performance and the heifers look like they are going to make real nice females. We sold a fancy made Union daughter this year at Simmsational to Travis Libke. 226K is a great haired and balanced bull who goes back to a fullblood cow on the bottom side.
This guy has been one that everyone points out right away when they walk in the pen. 286K is a half blood bull that has a real presence about him and carries himself proudly. He is long spined and attractive in his make up, yet deep bodied and big hipped. With just an 81 lb birthweight we feel this guy would work on cows or heifers. He also has a great disposition, good enough to lay down on us in the picture pen when he felt he had enough. We have used Renovation on a handful of cows the last couple of years and are always impressed with how consistent he is at producing bulls and females with low birthweight and lots of performance. We have a few half blood females in production off of him now and they are turning into great cows.

LaBatte Simmentals will be consigning 10 open heifers in this years sale, including a homozygous polled, Full Fleckvieh heifer, four black heifers and five red heifers. They are represented by some of our leading sires – Perks Potent 309H, IPU Black Cinch 95G and RF Caliber 014G. As a bonus they’re all homozygous polled but two. These heifers were not put onto grain until mid December so the pictures are what they are. All we’ve been feeding our replacement heifers this year is 2 lbs of 32% supplement. If you have any questions about these heifers before the sale, be sure to give us a call and we would be glad to go over them with you. Or better yet, come and have a look at them before the sale. Well here is our fullblood heifer. This first for many years that we have offered one in our bull sale. We think this heifer is a great one to be first. First of all, she is homozygous polled by parentage, she is 100% Full Fleckvieh and just a really good heifer. We purchased her mother out of Simmsational 2021 from Peter Sweeten and this is the heifer she was carrying. Her dam, 3H is just a really nice moderate three-year-old now with a beautiful udder. She just had another heifer calf mid January. 6K herself is really put together well. She is angular and deep, soft made, has a great disposition. Just really broody and has an outcross pedigree. There’s a world of opportunity in this heifer – a definite sale feature.

This is her fourth heifer she’s given us and about an hour ago she gave us our fifth. This really is a feature heifer with brood cow written all over her.

Another Potent daughter out of an old Accelerator daughter that’s still raising the good ones at 12 years old. She’s had 10 consecutive calves in a row now. A tremendous baldy Fleck daughter out of Potent. Something we always talked about doing is breeding some of our Fleck Red Simmental cows but never seemed to do it. Well in 2021 we did. All bred Potent and we are really happy with the results both bulls and heifers. I remember back when we started in the blacks and reds we had a few half black Fullblood cows who were some of our really top producers and we’re mostly baldies. This heifer in her own right is really good and so stylish. She wasn’t Homo tested but is three generations polled so has a very good chance of it. She weaned off at 810 pounds and has a great set of balanced EPD’s. Get in the lead and purchase this good half Fleckvieh heifer, you’re going to see a lot more of it.

Well Wade’s Tamale 159A cow does it again. She’s raised another really good heifer going to the bull sale. This is her fourth heifer going through our spring sale, they’ve averaged $16,250 so far. Not bad! 103K’s mother, a 56U daughter is one of my favorite cows on the farm. She’s powerful, a big cow but very easy fleshing and very feminine and stylish. She has a really good udder. 103K is a RF Caliber daughter, the first for us to sell. She’s long spined, beautiful fronted, great haired and has a great pedigree.
