FOREWORD Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 38th Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale on Friday, March 2nd, 2018 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw, SK on #1 highway. Can’t believe it’s been twelve months already that we were writing footnotes for the catalogue. How time does fly!

Ourselves and Meadow Acres would really like to thank all the bidders and buyers from our past sales for the continued support and effort you make each year to attend our sale. It is very much appreciated. Again in the fall of 2017 we saw an upward swing of cattle prices. Customer’s steers were bringing $1200-$1500 per head and the Simmental heifers were in high demand. In the commercial bred heifer sales Simmental and Simmental cross heifers were definitely topping the sales and bringing big premiums for their owners.

The Simmental breed is in high demand with the commercial industry right now. I think as a breed we have listened to our customers, made changes, and are raising the kind of cattle that the commercial industry is looking for. The breed offers high maternal traits, milk and muscle, superior performance and carcass value.

Our bull sale this year, along with Meadow Acres Farms, will consist of over 90 bulls in total. They are polled, thick, meaty, red and black bulls and a handful of red goggle eyed fullblood Fleckvieh influenced bulls, the kind that will make those baldies on your Black and Red Angus cows. The bulls are sired by some of the industry’s leading sires such as IPU Red Deputy, Spark Plug, Westcott, Royal Red, Priority, El Tigre, Liner 56U and French Attack in the fullbloods. We are always looking for genetics that will produce the right kind of bulls for our seedstock producers and commercial customers. Bulls that have fleshing ability, lots of middle and top, high maternal traits, good temperaments and are structurally sound on their feet and legs.

We will also be offering 16 top open replacement heifers, red and black, eight of each. I believe this is the best set of open purebred replacement heifers we’ve ever offered. Many of them are baldies. In the black division many of the heifers are sired by our new herd bull, MRK Priority 3C, a solid black, blaze faced Vision son that we are really excited about. He’s a massive, deep bodied, thick made bull with all the his EPDs ranking in the top 50% of the breed. We’re really excited to see his females in production next year. The reds are highlighted by daughters of the red baldy bull Spark Plug, an outcross bull that is going to have a big influence in our breeding program.

Barry P.S. Grandkids are growing like weeds. Our oldest, Brodyn, just turned 14 in November and is almost six foot tall already. Emry and Jenna, our oldest granddaughters, are starting to play basketball already at the Gladmar High School. The boys are all still playing hockey on three different teams, all in beef 4-H and grain 4-H. The girls are busy with karate and all three travel to Weyburn to take gymnastics. Great to see them involved in sports and full of energy. They make us very proud grandparents.

“Sight Unseen” Purchase Program

If you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in our bulls give Barry or Dustin a call and they will personally go over the bulls and your program with you. They will recommend which bulls they think would meet your satisfaction and refer you to one of their sale staff.

In-Herd Semen

LaBatte Simmentals & Meadow Acres Simmentals reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. The semen collection will be at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for in herd use only.

Delivery

At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and Meadow Acres Simmentals will take purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, bulls will be delivered at a reasonable charge. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte and Meadow Acres Farms. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.

Homo Polled. We are starting off the 2018 sale with an outstanding calving ease prospect in Lot 1. This Sheriff son has been good right from day one. Wilf Davis purchased his dam for us from Neil Carson and family at the 2016 Harvest Hoedown sale where she was one of the high sellers. 8E’s mother is dark cherry red and very good uddered and has done a great job in raising this special bull. Justice started with a small birth weight of 76lbs, is moderate framed, thick and soggy, has a great hair coat and disposition. We think this young herdbull has a lot of potential as a calving ease specialist, but also as a herdbull with his muscle, capacity and eye appeal.

Homo Polled. A cherry red Dillinger 80B son out of a first calving Sheriff daughter going back to the great Pocahontas 105L cow family. This guy is as long as a freight train, dark dark red, good muscled, very smooth made, homo polled and has a little different pedigree on top for the industry. His dam is perfectly uddered, great pedigreed and going to be a standout cow in the future in our herd. 14E is a sure calving ease bull with his small birth weight, double calving ease pedigree with Dillinger and Sheriff, his smoothness and length. He’s in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease EPD and top 4% for birth weight and top 3% for API. We think this Dillinger son has a great future ahead of him.

Here’s one of the first powerful Westcott sons. This hairy, deep, soggy bull is out of a red blaze faced Lotto daughter going back to the great Pashmenia 403P cow. These Westcott sons are very consistent in type and quality. They are thick, meaty, loose hided cattle that can push the scales down at weaning time.

Homo Polled and Diluter Free. This bull’s name should be Standout because that’s what he’s been since the day he was born. He looked great as a calf, great at six months and continued on through weaning and still is a standout today. His mother is a great uddered Horizon daughter that is one of our favorite cows. Of the “A” red cows our two favorites have been 21A, the mother of Lieutenant, and 81A, the mother of Red Deputy. 24E himself has an excellent body type, long, big rear quarter, wide topped, loose hided, has great depth and spring of rib, hair and a great disposition. He is a replica of his sire, IPU Red Deputy 25C, but may be just a little more powerful. We’re really happy with our Red Deputy calves. We mostly had heifer calves last spring and they look really good too as you will see by the outstanding Red Deputy daughter 111E (lot 108) that sells in our heifer section of the sale. We believe Lieutenant is one of the best all around red bulls we’ve ever sold.

Land & Cattle and her only other bull calf to Clifford Pukas, Wynyard, SK. This Westcott son is a pound maker and he’s attractive and stylish.

Homo Polled. A really good Bartender son out of a nice uddered, moderate framed, stylish Horizon cow. 64E himself is dark red, thick and deep, great haired and very loose made. In last year’s sale 41A’s Muirheads Broker daughter sold to Lake Bottom Cattle Co. at Smoky Lake, AB. Bartender 64E will sire calves that the order buyers will fight over, and the kind the feedlot operators love to feed. Homo polled and we think homo good.

This calf was an eye catcher from a young age and one of the favorites when he was a baby. When his Marksman dam came into heat the cows rode her hard and she broke her back and had to be destroyed. Very unfortunate as she was a really good cow. We put 87E on a Holstein cow that already had two other twin calves on her. So that cow raised three calves, one being 87E. He did very well as he was a really good calf and still is. He’s dark red, really smooth made and has a lot of potential.

This dark red Westcott bull comes out of an outstanding Gunner cow going back to the old matron Noremac 16M. We flushed 89W successfully this summer and will be putting in some of those embryos this spring. A maternal sister to 95E, a beautiful Red Zone daughter, sold in the 2016 Simmsational sale to Quinn Wilson for $25,000. We think one of the best heifers we ever sold. In our 2014 bull sale we sold an Horizon son of 89W to Craig Bendickson of Gladmar that I thought was the buy of the sale. Craig has been extremely happy with him and said you can pick his calves out as they are really good. We think this bull should sire some outstanding calves. His daughters should be kept for replacement heifers as his dam and granddam are some of the best.

This is a really tanky Westcott son that has a lot of rib shape, capacity, muscle and top. He has a great hair coat and is very stylish. He’s one that a lot of people ask about. In our 2016 bull sale Frischholz Farms from Minton bought a good Red Zone son of 101E’s dam 84Z who is a blaze faced, good uddered Hot Iron daughter. With 101E’s capacity, big butt and style we think he’s the kind that’s going to sire those soggy steer calves and great replacement females that are so much in demand today. We are still waiting for his homo polled test results but will have them by sale day.

A super soggy Spark Plug bull out of one of our favorite cows. His Specialist dam is a big time cow. She’s dark red, good uddered, deep, deep and very broody. In last year’s sale her son out of Bartender was one of our high sellers going to the great commercial operation Diamond K Cattle Co. and in 2015 her good son sold to O’Hara Farms in Ceylon, SK. Another high performing Spark Plug bull with a nice blaze face. Spark Plug was the high selling bull that ourselves and Circle 7 Ranch & Sunrise Simmentalspurchased for $95,000 out of the Springcreek bull sale in 2016. He was stout, sound, thick and had a real presence about him. Also an outcross pedigree sired by the polled full Fleckvieh bull Anchor D Viper and out of a really good, moderate framed Crosby female. He was homo polled and half Fleckvieh. We bought this T-Bone daughter from Bob Anderson at Cremona, AB as a heifer calf and she has been one of our favorites. She’s produced outstanding females and this will be her third bull to go through the bull sale. Her past two bulls have sold to Storle Farms, Lake Alma, SK and Blackwell Bros at Assiniboia, SK. 144E has just a little star on his head, is smooth made and correct. Truly a sale feature selling these two embryo transplant full brothers by Springcreek Spark Plug and our #1 donor cow IPU 52N Ms Pocahontas 2Y, one of the most awesome cows we have ever owned in 47 years of breeding Simmental. We could write a book about her but I’ll try not to. She’s a Red Liner 56U daughter out of the great Pocahontas 52N cow that is a full sister to Pocahontas 68M. When we sold a great number of cows to Meadow Acres Farms we had first pick and it was Pocahontas 2Y. She’s a beautiful red, moderate female with lots of capacity, middle, an excellent udder and just a true brood cow. At the recent Agribition 50-50 sale the 2Y embryos topped the embryo lots, as we sold 5 Captain Scream X Pocahontas 2Y embryos for $3450 each to Robb Farms at Maidstone. These were the only embryos ever offered for sale off her. There’s a great opportunity in these two bulls with their outcross pedigree, being homo polled, their outstanding EPD profile and their being top quality themselves and out of one of the elite donor cows in the breed. We have sold four sons of Pocahontas 2Y through this very sale. The Simulater bull to Maxwell Simmentals and Clifford Land & Cattle, the $32,000 Dillinger bull to Kinn Simmentals in ND, who we use in our own program, the $20,000 El Tigre son that’s doing such a great job for Jean-Francois LeBlond in Quebec and her son from last year, an exceptional Captain Black son that sold to Solberg Livestock, MT. And now these two great Spark Plug bulls, 160E and 166E. They were born a day apart and weighed 94lbs and 98lbs at birth. The160E bull has a beautiful blaze down his forehead, is long, smooth, thick and correct and has an abundance of style. The 166E bull is solid colored, full of meat and muscle and is great haired and they both have great dispositions.

The only red El Tigre we have in the sale this year and he is a good one. His dam, the Red Knight 172R cow, is sending her fifth bull to the sale. Two full brothers to 178E sold to Sheldon Virostek, AB and Hanford Simmentals, Snowflake, MB. A really good Horizon son sold to RBD Ranch at Milestone, SK and in the 2011 sale a 680S son sold to Rendezvous Farms at Ste Rose, MB where he went on to produce many bulls that went through their bull sales. Homo Polled, Homo Black. Something a little different here. We call him Panda Bear. He is colored like a Hereford but black, not red, and he is “homo” black. We purchased his mother from Czech-Mate Livestock as the high selling black bred heifer out of the Western Harvest sale in December 2016.

She is a really good young cow. She was bred to Ultra Mr Combustible, a black baldy bull. When 10E was born unassisted we were a little surprised with his color. But he grew into quite a bull. He started off at 88lbs and had an actual weaning weight of 980lbs on September 5th. Not bad for a 2 year old dam. This guy would sire some awesome, flashy, high performing steers and sharp replacement heifers. He would really work on a set of black cows. He’s homo polled, homo black and very interesting.

Homo Polled. A big time black Westcott bull! This soggy made, deep bodied, thick made Westcott son has eye appeal, correctness, a great pedigree and performance. He weaned off his Lotto mom at a whopping 990lbs and was #1 adjusted weaning weight bull in his contemporary group. His dam is a great uddered Lotto cow off a beautiful 56U dam. Her last year’s bull calf sold in our 2017 bull sale to Bruce Barber, Biggar, SK and the year before that her Poker Face son sold to Trevor King, Wainwright, AB. Powerful, powerful best describes this bull. He was the gold medal winner for performance with an actual weaning weight of 1055lbs, a 205 day adjusted weaning weight of 963lbs and was the #1 indexing bull. He has a bigger birth weight but was born unassisted, had lots of vigor and just never stopped growing. His mother, the Elegante cow, is a big, soggy, Black Joker female who, as I write this, just calved. We have two really good daughters of hers in the herd, an El Tigre daughter and a Poker Face daughter. Both are really good young cows with good udders and lots of capacity. This big topped, big butted 56U son would sire some powerful steers and replacement heifers that would bring premiums for his new owner.

We purchased him from Kolton McIntosh at the 2015 Agribition show and bought him privately out of the stall. He’d just been named Reserve Junior Champion Bull Calf.

This young son of his is very smooth made with lots of rib and shape. He would sire an outstanding set of heifers and steers for his new owner. His maternal sister in last year’s sale was our high selling open heifer, selling to KT Ranches, Kelowna, BC for $14,750.

The order buyers and feedlot operators like these cattle with a little chrome on them, knowing there is probably some Simmental influence in them to give them the gain-ability and carcass value they’re looking for. And the baldy replacement females definitely bring a premium.

Homo Polled. What a great calving ease prospect this young, solid black Deputy bull is. With IPU Deputy, Cobra and Odin in his pedigree he has calving ease built right in and has a birth weight himself of 76lbs. He ranks in the top 2% of the breed for calving ease and the top 10% of the breed for birth weight EPD. He himself is very deep bodied, good quartered and smooth made. If you want to put hair on your cattle he has got it. Probably the hairiest bull we have ever sold and the right kind of hair. The feedlots love cattle with hair. Our programs are closely aligned and focused on passion for the cattle business and family based operations. It’s always exciting to see the group of bulls that come together to create one of the most anticipated sales of the spring!

The set of bulls we have compiled this year are a group that we are very excited about and extremely proud of. A group that we already knew this time last year were going to be a great set of bulls and seeing them mature and get to sale time is always very satisfying as seedstock producers.

There are bulls in the offering that will offer different attributes such as performance, maternal, calving ease etc. This group of bulls brings great consistency and also offers genetic diversity.

The Meadow Acres bulls have been on a rigorous herd health plan since birth. We work very closely with a team of veterinarians to establish the most reliable and consistent health protocols for our entire herd. We also work closely with Cargill Nutrition to ensure that our feed is all tested and analyzed to build our TMR ration that develops these bulls on their own natural do-ability. We believe that these bulls have been developed under the right conditions to promote longevity and soundness. Bulls will all be semen tested prior to sale time and are guaranteed. We also invest in colour and polled testing all of the bulls so there is no guess work when selecting the right bull for you. Free delivery is provided and we will take your bull home and care for him until we start delivery. For customers from the United States, our physical location is much closer to you then where our sale is held. We are only 30 minutes north of the North Gate Entry. We are pleased to complete required testing for export and coordinate delivery in a timely and efficient manner.

When we were on our way home from trying to buy the Westcott bull, we were disappointed but happy to know we could still utilize him and this guy is exactly what we envisioned we could produce with Westcott. This Westcott/Horizon cross is potent and flat out awesome. We are so excited about this bull and his future within our great breed. We have worked hard to establish “our type” of cattle since starting out in the breed 9 years ago and this guy brings it all together for us. 224E has been a standout since birth, and he has had that herd bull presence to him since he was young. A bull you really have to admire for his overall thickness and how he is so soft made as well. He is huge middled, deep bodied, has excellent shape and structure to his hip and smooth through his shoulder. He carries his thickness and shape so well while being strong topped and he gets out and moves so freely. Overall a super complete bull, soggy made, long bodied and great haired. His mother is MAF Sprinkles 14A, a cow who we were lucky enough to get these calves off of and look forward to building her legacy through them. We are excited to be a part of this guy’s future!

Homo Polled. 64E is a great example of the Westcott sire group and why we are so high on them! This guy is very long bodied, thick and deep made. He is smooth, big nutted and moves out well. A bull you have to admire for this depth of quarter and overall look to him. His cherry red El Tigre mother was our favorite of the sire group as a bred heifer and has done a great job on this guy. She mirrors many of this guy’s qualities; long bodied, deep, attractive, big footed and very good uddered. His maternal granddam is a cow that we flushed and have sold a daughter to Crowe Brothers and have retained all of her other daughters in herd. Homo Polled. It’s easy to see why we are really excited about these Westcott sired cattle, as the consistency that they have, both bulls and females is just awesome! Here is another favourite in the bull pen, as 104E is wide topped and thick made. A bull that has to be appreciated for his depth of body, huge middle, strength of top for his amount of body he has to him and his overall balance. He is good footed and moves out well. A real meat wagon who has an excellent demeanor. What makes this bull even better is his Exciter dam. She is a favourite around here. A moderate female, big bodied, very sound, great uddered and is a consistent producer. We have retained 104E’s maternal sister in herd and have sold maternal brothers to Gord Manz and Sentes Farms. She is big bodied, big footed and good uddered. She is also a direct daughter of Shamrock 120L which I would say is one of the unsung big time cow families at LaBattes. Homo Polled. 190E is a bull that is hard to fault! This guy is smooth made, yet has jam to him. He is thick and has one of the deepest rib shapes of any bull in the pen. Strong topped, large testicles, structurally sound, long bodied and absolutely wicked haired. You really have to admire how this bull ties it all together and is so soft in his design and free in his movement as well as his EPD profile. He is a result of IVF embryo work we had done on MAF Sprinkles 14A, a Horizon daughter we had sold to Swan Lake. We had some misfortune with her and she is no longer around. It is especially bad misfortune when you see these calves we were able to get. She was a soft made, huge middled, thick female that had a great udder. A female that we are proud to have raised and are excited for these bulls of hers to go and make their mark on the breed. Homo Polled. In 2016 we sold our lead off Horizon son to Jean-Francois LeBlond, of Quebec, for $27,000. He named him Lampman and we used him a bit ourselves.

17E is a twin who is hairy, stout and moderate. He is strong topped and moves out freely and is smooth made. With a weaning weight EPD in the top 10 percentile and yearling weight in the top 25th percentile as well this bull will sire you some heavy calves no doubt. A maternal brother sold last year to Huron Farming Company and maternal sister sold to Creekside Simmentals in 2016.

We sold a lot of the heifers bred this way in the female sale so we didn’t have too many Rattler calves, which is too bad when you see bulls like this in the pen. 118E is out of a second calver, who is really long bodied, smooth made in a dark red, hairy package. He has a tick more frame size, is deep bodied, soft made and moves out free and easy. His dam is another dark red young El Tigre cow that is the right kind.

My favorite part about this bull is hands down his dam. She is a beautiful young black cow, one of only a few Stout daughters we have. She has a picture perfect udder, she is moderate made with tons of middle to her and she always produces a good one. Her first calf was MAF Blackhawk 32C, who we sold to Packet Bros. in 2016. Homo Polled Hetero Black. In 2016 we sold MAF King Cobra 3C and we were able to have the walking rights on him after he was done at stud. We used him AI on a few select cows and we were really pleased with the calves. They are very long bodied and built right when they come and grow like crazy. We lead off with this total stud, 42E. He possesses so much natural thickness, depth of body, as well as spring of rib.

He is strong and wide topped and smooth made. 42E is a bull who knows he is awesome and will often be found showing off. He moves out extremely well and is very sound in his structure. He has explosive numbers for growth being in the top 1% of the breed for weaning weight and top 3% for yearling weight.

His mother is a really nice cow, big bodied and good uddered. A maternal brother sold to Hoegl Livestock in 2016, produced a reserve division champion heifer calf at Agribition and has bred very well for them.

A Soda Pop daughter out of a black Horizon daughter going back to Black Jewel 6S, the mother of IPU Red Zone 16A. We haven’t tested this heifer but are pretty sure she would be homo polled. She’s moderate framed, very nice fronted and has her grandmother’s capacity. She has a nice set of balanced EPDs. With Cream Soda and Black Jewel in her pedigree she should turn out very well for her new owner.

Another super MRK Priority 3C baldy heifer out of a really good uddered Ridgeline cow we purchased from the Bonchuks. You can see from these few Priority heifers in the sale what a job he is doing for us and Circle 7 Ranch, the Oberles. Priority himself has a beautiful blaze down the middle of his face and no other white. He’s homo polled and homo black. This young March heifer has real opportunity ahead of her. She’s angular, deep bodied, has an attractive baldy face, a great hair coat, is very correct and has brood cow written all over her.

A really nice Bartender daughter out of a great uddered Red Western daughter. In 2016 we bred or cleaned up most of our first and second calvers to Bartender 392B. He’s a blood red Wheatland 680S grandson we purchased as the high seller out of the SIBL bull sale. His first daughters are just calving this year and it look like their going to have really nice udders.

Another red feature heifer. This beautiful Red Deputy heifer is out of a daughter of Pocahontas 68M, 140B. Jim Marker of Bar M Simmentals, Gillette, WY purchased her in the 2015 Simmsational sale where she was the high selling female that day, selling for $35,000. She’s still here in Canada and Jim and I decided to leave her here and sell her progeny on a share basis. She is a beautiful uddered cow and looks very much like her elite donor dam Pocahontas 68M. Her Red Deputy heifer is a moderate framed, deep, angular, feminine, broody heifer with a great future ahead of her. We think this heifer calf has a great amount of potential for her new owner with her pedigree, style and broodiness.
