Welcome to the 4th Annual KSL Bull Sale. We can’t believe how time seems to be flying by and another year’s sale is almost upon us. The past year has been full of challenges, and we feel lucky to just be doing what we love and continuing to produce top quality genetics for our customers. The 4th Annual Sale will be our largest to date with 70 bulls on offer and we are very excited for your appraisal of all these exciting young herd sires. New this year we have 5 Charolais yearling bulls on offer. We had the opportunity to acquire a group of Charolais cows and bred heifers that we felt would produce the kind of bulls that would suit the needs of our Peace Country cattleman. The bred heifers we purchased, we were able to pick straight from the keeper pen of HEJ Charolais in Innisfail, 4 cows from Coyote Flatts Charolais in Lethbridge and some proven cows as well as bred heifers from Cassidy Charolais’s dispersal in Beaverlodge. Our small Charolais herd will be a welcome addition to KSL, and we look forward to supplying the Peace Country with a few White/Red Charolais bulls alongside our Simmentals. This year’s yearling Simmental pen is full of exciting AI calves as well as our first embryo calves to sell. The AI calves are a variety of old proven genetics, to new and up and coming bulls that have the industry very excited. We looked long and hard for AI sires to offer us new genetic improvements and love to dive back into the tank and use the proven old sires from the past. We are also very excited to offer calves sired by our walking sires. We have some sires walking the pastures here at KSL that are showing us great potential, from Moe’s Hot Shot in our Red and Black program to the JNR Exxon calves in the Fullbloods. The long yearling bulls on offer this year are athletic and developed slowly. These bulls are from our May calving program and are held over to mature and develop into extra age coming two-year-olds. We take a lot of pride in this group of bulls as they are sired 100% by our own walking sires. It really shows the depth and variety of herd sires we have in our pen as these bulls are sound, good footed, well-muscled, and honest. They haven’t been pushed on feed or pampered, they are designed to go out and cover large groups of cows, while maintaining condition and getting cows bred. The largest sire group this year is the Fullbloods is Great Guns Astro. Astro walked the pastures here till the ripe age of 10. He was one of the bulls Brad Imported from Texas, when he lived in Manitoba, and he finished his breeding career in Northern Alberta. The JB CDN Durango sire group is another group that we are very excited about as he is shaping up to be the polled Full Fleck we had hoped he would mature into. This is likely the most polled long yearlings we have had on offer. Red, Black, Fullblood, horned or polled, the long yearling pen is stacked with breeding potential. Although the 4th sale on their own, this program is certainly no stranger to selling bulls as they have been at it for a long time and their loyal following of bull purchasers is evident of the long lasting relationships they have formed by supplying beef bulls in to todays commercial and purebred industries. We feel this years offering is likely the deepest in quality and certainly the most diverse with the edition of Charolais bulls into the offering. We feel the Charolais addition to this powerful Fleckvieh and purebred Simmental program will compliment each other very well and will truly make KSL a one stop shop for all your herd bull needs.Very few places can you go to get such high quality April, May, June born two year old Fleckvieh and purebred bulls that come from a legit spring born program to compliment the yearling January/February born bulls. The KSL cow herd is not only large and impressive in quantity but the quality is truly second to none and one of the most impressive sets of cows we get to annually see out on grass. The unique part of the KSL program is also their large commercial cow/calf operation that’s equally as impressive as the papered cows and has been put through the same selecting routine. Great feet, sound, functional udders and the ability to convert feed and hold body condition year round is an absolute must to be able to stick around the ranch no matter what side of the paperwork that female is on. A true testament to the mothers behind these herd sire prospects as they are ran along side the commercial cows and treated as so, no pampering of these females as they are expected to get through the cold winter months of northern Alberta, calve on time in either calving interval they are selected for, breed back on time and wean off a high quality calf in the fall. The sires selected to utilize at KSL are always high quality and they have one of the stoutest, powerful set of walking herd sires you’ll see anywhere. Sonic, Durango, Duke, Ferrous, just to name a few are bulls that have walked here that have done a great job siring cattle that offer calving ease and performance with great hair coats, lots of polled options and a tonne of maketability to put into your calf crop. The KSL bulls are bred to help enhance your bottom line and increase profitability. His young Vindicator dam was the Grand Champion Simmental Bred Heifer at the Dawson Creek Fair and hasn’t looked back since. The stoutest, widest topped and heavy muscled yearling in the pen, Muscle Man is an embryo calf with some serious potential. Much like his sire he is deep sided, good footed and carries himself so well. A bull we seriously considered keeping for ourselves because we love his overall eye appeal and thickness from front to back. His big barrelled tank of a mother is broody and powerful. If you’re looking to add some thickness and muscle, 25J fits the bill. We may just watch this bull wherever he ends up with some serious seller’s remorse.

A polled full fleck Big Sky Duke son, Jensen is soft made and loose sided. He has a great hair coat and a little splash of chrome, with lots of growth, muscle and perfect big round foot. All the traits a Simmental bull should have. He has inherited his sire’s docile temperament which Duke is so well known for. His maternal brother one of last year’s high selling bulls to Pat and Reuven Hrudko.

Canadian Conquor and Canadian Pride are two full brothers to sell in the sale sired by Western Union 5Z. These two flush mates are embryos from one of the most powerful cows we have had walk the pastures here, Big Sky Conquor. The triedand-true crossing of 5Z and Jeremiah should result in some gorgeous offspring with growth and muscle. Adding size and frame while maintaining udder quality and thickness. I will be honest when it comes to 43J I was really wanting a heifer calf, as I longed for a polled Emperor female, but I think I came out just as lucky with this guy. A neat polled bull with cool pigment and loads of style. This big fella weaned big and hasn’t stopped, his dam continues to kick butt for us. She has produced two offspring going to breeders with a heifer working at Nolara for Larry Van Sickle and a bull at Waldron Farms for Gary Waldron. Claudia has produced some great ones and has a Big Sky Bubba heifer calf at side, born the first week of January that has keeper pen written on her since birth!

We have always admired from a far what our friends in Eastern Canada produce and we finally were able to secure purchasing a female from out there. The good folks at Dwayann Simmentals out did themselves on Henrita cause when she arrived, we completely fell in love with her. A beautiful heifer with an old school pedigree, with the size and performance we love. She laid down and gave us this awesome Philosophy bull calf that made us even happier with our purchase. A polled bull with a great mix of calving ease and performance.

NON DILUTOR - The first of hopefully many, Grand Sorcerer is our calf from the heifer we purchased at Pasture Treasures from Anchor D Simmentals. NON-DILUTOR - We are very pleased to start off the long yearling section of the bull sale with the Astro sons, they are the largest sire group this year and very well rounded. An outcross pedigree with loads of potential these sons are thick, hairy, coloured right, with some big-time growth! We used Astro on a large selection of polled females to add some more depth and muscle which has resulted in some neat bulls. Huck does have some scurs but a polled bull with serious potential and substance.

When Hornby was born, his dam snuck away to the far end of a pasture to have him. Hidden in tall reed canary grass for a day or so until we realized he was there. By then the Mosquitoes had swarmed him and his eyes were darn near swelled shut, but that never phased him one bit. He came running out of that grass as we tried to grab him, and he was off and running with his mother. Resilient and vigorous he never looked back and that is one thing this cow has always proven. She doesn’t need us to wean a powerhouse calf like 154H. A true cattleman’s type with a “get the job done on their own” attitude time and time again.
