How it works: You can buy a card to become a “judge”. 1 card is $25.00 or 3 cards for $50.00. Each card entitles you to select a Sim-Acta of heifer calves. Simply put, you give it your best guess on which three will be placed first, second and third in the show. The winner (the “judge” who picked the correct heifer calves in order) will receive a sale credit totalling the whole amount of tickets sold. Example, 22 tickets @ $50.00/ticket= $1100.00 sale credit.

Judging cards need to be bought and the three heifer calves chosen on the card before the show judging begins at 12:30 pm on sale day.

The heifer calves will be judged Tournament style (single knockout elimination). Calves will enter the ring two at a time. Each judge will vote for one or the other. The winner advances to the next round until we get down to the final three calves. If there is a tie the money will be split.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE With the fall calf run in full swing, it appears prices are certainly better than some predicted, and again these growth, stout calves are bringing premium prices. The genetics offered in this sale should produce those in-demand calves.

All good things come to an end and after 27 years managing this sale Keystone Sale Management (Blair and Lois McRae) have decided to no longer act as sale managers. However we are pleased they are remaining as members and consigners. We would like to express our sincere thanks to them for all of their efforts over the years.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR THE

RAMSEY FAMILY Marty and Kaitlyn, Cam & Shelley Ramsey run 3400 acres of grain, hay and pasture land and breed around 50 heifers every year along with 260 cows. They use red, black and fullblood Simmental bulls. As they raise their own replacement females, they look to breed strong milking, good maternal, low maintenance, easy keeping females. The Simmental breed provides all the traits they strive for and adds the performance to wean early and still have steers that push the scales down early in the fall.

Their calves are usually sold by the middle of September.

Because they run a mixed grain and cattle operation, winter calving works best for them. Calving starts around January 20th with the heifers and the cows start around February 1st. The heifers are synchronised for breeding and run a 42 day calving period and the cows are exposed for 50 days. As the calving period is short, fertility is also an important trait.

Cam started buying Simmental heifers years ago at the West Central sale in Shoal Lake, and Marty purchased his first two purebred heifers from Everett More in 2000. They usually buy some bred heifers each fall from different purebred sales to continue to strenthen their herd. Over the years bulls have been purchased from a number of strong herds around Manitoba- Schweitzer Simmentals, Dana & Megan Johns, Arrow Creek Simmentals, Rainbow River Simmentals and Worman Farms just to name a few.

Being involved in the breed has given the Ramsey family the opportunity to make many friendships and be involved with many great purebred producers who take an interest in how their seedstock is performing in the commercial world and through the good and bad times that the beef industry has seen over the years.

Welcome to the 2017 edition of the Keystone Konnection sale. In past years it has been a pleasure workin with Blair and Lois as management with their years of involvement and dedication to this sale. With time comes change and we are quite excited to now work with our new sale management of Scott and staff at Bohorson marketing. This will be our 38th year consigning cattle to this sale and 41st year as members of the Canadian Simmental Association. Our cowherd consists of 250 breeding Simmental, Red Angus and Black Angus females and we host our annual bull sale on the farm March 7, 2018.
