The Future Looks Bright

Why Not select genetics from the longest running association sale

37 Years

Presidents Message

As I write this the fall calf run is just beginning and all indications are its going to be another good one. It’s fun to be in the cattle business again. As always there is a financial advantage to raising the good ones verses the other ones. To do that you need superior genetics, and when you can access those from the proven reputable programs available in this sale, then it’s your chance to move your program forward. Whether your needs are bulls, bred or open females and reds, blacks, or fullbloods, the Keystone Konnection members have all the bases covered in the Simmental breed. Hope to see on December 8th. Keystone Sales Management

Wow, 37 years the Keystone Simmental Association has been marketing their top quality cattle. You will find many top individuals that have come out of the Keystone past sales and worked well in purebred and commercial programs. This group is not just about the cattle, you will not find a better group of people who all work together and dig deep every year to sell only their best at this sale. With the cattle market reaching all time highs over the past year, it has given everyone some optimism. We feel there are still lots of good years as cattle numbers are low and thankfully our consumers are still eating BEEF!!! If it is herd bulls you are looking for, Cherry Creek Farm has brought their best to town and they are Beef Bulls with a little more age to cover more ground. The bred females have noted breeding dates and an amazing group of functional heifer calves that are halter broke and ready for Junior programs or go into a breeding program. We hope that you can take time to attend this 37th Sale and view the Beefy Simmental bulls and females that will add pounds to your calf crop in the fall. The cattle market still pays you by the pound so let’s help put more dollars in your pockets. If you have any questions, or need any assistance contact ourselves, any of the sale staff or view the sale online at Liveauctions.tv. Blair & Lois McRae

Keystone Simmental Association Commercial Producer of the Year 2014

My wife Cindy and I run a 3000 acre grain and 200 head cow calf operation located south of Hamiota. We have been involved with the Simmental breed now for close to 30 years. In the mid 80’s, Dad was looking for more growth in our mainly traditional herd of cows. The first Simmental bull he purchased came from Gerry Joynt and I can still picture Dad’s look of disbelief and satisfaction at the first set of Simmental calves the following fall! As I became more involved in the operation, I began to accumulate a few cows; still using the Simmental bulls that dad was buying. In the fall of 1997, looking to expansion and the base to a quality herd, we purchased 5 bred cows from Allan Preston, followed by a number of cow calf pairs from Gerry Joynt. As well, over the years, we have purchased bred heifers at the West Central Sale, Harvest Hoedown and private treaty from operations such as MRL. At the time it seemed like it was an impossible feat to expand our herd to 60 or even 80 head. Today with our current herd size we are able to mainly select our replacements from within our own herd. Bulls have been purchased from Keystone members over the years including Gerry Joynt, Everett More and Mar

Mac Farms. We start calving in February to manage the labor of putting in a crop in n April and May. This produces those heavy calves that can be weaned in September and sold directly off the cow. WE have always appreciated the Simmental cow for being great producing mothers. I have to give these cows and their big calves most of the credit for keeping us going over the last ten years. We are very grateful to still be in the beef business today to enjoy the rewards. In closing, we would like to thank the Keystone Association for nominating us for this award. It is a very humbling and rewarding experience. - Kevin.

Kevin and Cindy Routledge of Hamiota, Manitoba were the Keystone Simmental Association 2014 Commercial Producers and presented sign by Everett More, President.

Well here we are closing in on sale day with this tremendous set of twin bull calves. The daughters of the powerful CEN Miss Perfect 512P purchased as the high selling bred heifer from Francis Gagnon at their fall sale in 2012 has done just an outstanding job of mothering these two rascals. Coronita 817Y has a perfect udder and feet, lot of milk to raise two awesome bull calves. With FGAF Magnum 901Z as sire, the genetic merit of these two future herd bulls makes them a golden opportunity. Both are very structurally correct, big tops, wide rumps with great feet and legs. They are very complete in their entirety. It is worth the trip to Brandon to take the opportunity to view and have one of these good ones working in your herd.

The dams of both of these heifers are moderate in frame, but big in capacity, thick, sound and have very nice udders. Cosmo’s dam, Umbra, was shown successfully as a bred heifer, and has raised many good ones including two daughters retained in-herd and two of our high selling bulls over the years. Cosmo has inherited her flashy style, softness of middle, and fuzzy hair coat from her dam. Clara’s dam, 3W, is a direct daughter of our foundation black cow and donor, “Blackie”, 3W ¦ Mother of Lot 18 so you know that power and consistency run deep in Clara’s pedigree. When dad dispersed of his herd in 2008, 3W was one of only two cows that dad did not part with. In 2014 when dad totally retired, 3W joined my program and thanks to her high fertility, we’ve pulled her up from April to January calving. That’s why Clara is a younger calf, but she was no slouch in terms of performance and held her own in the group of January heifers. Don’t be afraid of her age. Clara will have the weight and frame to get bred early with all the rest. These two heifers are so similar and have so much to offer in terms of their maternal backing - assess them, and the choice is yours. Take your pick, or take them both, either way you won’t be disappointed! Both heifers are homo polled by parentage. Homo black tests pending.

We purchased Overdrive as a $12,000 high seller in 2013, and to-date, his genetics have been held exclusive to our program. Overdrive is a calving ease specialist, his calves are born small and easy, and have an extreme amount of vigor immediately after birth! He also ranks at the top 15% of the breed for milk. The consistency in Overdrive 1B ¦ Son of Lot 19 progeny is evident, with all of his calves possessing eye-appeal, clean front ends, thick hair coats, sound feet and legs, and docility. I’m all about udder quality too, so the ideal teat size and placement developing in his daughters is making me very excited to see them start milking this January! Overdrive’s first set of bull calves were in extremely high demand and sold beyond our expectations this spring. Unfortunately, we lost Overdrive to a breeding injury this year, therefore his influence can only be continued through our A.I. program. Lucky for you, since we are featuring two Overdrive daughters in this year’s sale, we felt it would be fitting to offer 10 doses of Overdrive semen to share with one lucky bidder. Overdrive is homo polled and hetero black.

Our 1st half blood Simmentals were registered in 1972 – mothered by our father Mel’s purebred Hereford cows. We were original members of the now dissolved South-West Manitoba Simmental Association. This is our 16th year as a member of the Keystone Simmental Association and we enjoy being part of this great group. Our herd is on a comprehensive herd health program and our consignments have all tested negative for BVD-PI. The two service sires to our sale heifers are in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease EPDs. Out of a red blaze face heifer that goes back to a full blood cow that is still producing at 12 years of age. Very nice udders on her mother and grandmother.

We are currently running 75 head of purebred and commercial cows. March 16th of this year we were proud to announce the addition of our next generation to our outfit with the arrival of our son Chet. He has kept us very busy, along with custom grazing 500 pairs besides our own. Once again it is a pleasure to be working with such a good group of dedicated breeders, in the 2015 edition of the Keystone Konnection sale. Our offering of heifer calves is right of the top of the pen; raised only on Mommas Milk, no creep. Don’t hesitate to contact us regarding these girls. See you sale day!

She comes out of a moderate framed lengthy Red Light cow that has been very productive at the farm. The Milestone 100M cow did pretty good I would say, to knock another good one out like this at 13 years of age. Sired by the NAC Pete bull, a Rashad son that has walked the home pastures leaving a number of good offspring to date. Consigned by Crest View Land and Cattle Co. Ltd & Crest View Ranch

Robert & Lois Sharpe ¦ Rapid City, MB ¦ Phone 204.826.2519

Welcome to the 2015 edition of the Keystone Konnection Sale from all of us at B.O.B.S. Located overlooking the scenic valley of the Little Saskatchewan River just east of Rapid City, Broken Oak Black Simmental is proud and pleased to once again be a part of this annual event. As one of the first in the province to introduce black genetics into a purebred herd, we have been breeding primarily black Simmental for so long I have lost count of the year our first ½ blood calf arrived. We knew then it was something we wanted to be a part of and have now developed a small, elite herd of multi- generational solid black, polled females that meet our criteria and the high standards for beef production demanded by purebred and commercial cattlemen alike. Along with my wife Lois, daughter Lesley and her husband Trent we welcome you to stop by the stall and assess our offering this year and chat with myself, Lesley or Brooklyn about our program.

These beauties will be amongst the first “SS/PRS Tailgater 621Z” progeny to be offered for sale in this part of the world at least, and they surely won’t be the last. We were fortunate enough to secure a semen package on this full brother to “High Voltage” and used him on all our heifers and a select group of cows. The dam of these twins was selected to be bred to him for her ability to produce outstanding females. She is the dam of “Love me Dew”, a female that produced our Sim-Acta entry last year that was 1st Runner-Up and then joined the elite herd of Bert’s NR Simmental as Samuels show heifer. We hoped a mating to 621Z would click and it sure seemed to, twofold! Daisy raised these twins on her own and we think she did a pretty good job, a tribute to the milking ability of “Sevens” daughters. One red and one black, both are solid in color and smooth polled and will make great cows. You be the judge, make your choice and the other one comes home to our keeper pen.
