OWNER: Hi, this is my first year having a steer project. I named my steer after one of my favourite movies, ‘Uncle Buck’ with John Candy. My favourite thing about ‘Buck’ is that he is quiet and he has a small white stripe on his shoulder. I am goinng to put my steer profit towards buying my next steer and saving to my first show heifer. When I grow up I want to be a designer.

I am 9 years old....and almost 10 on June 14. People who know me know that I love riding horses, working on my calves and hanging with my friends. I homeschool and work hard with my family everyday so we can also have fun. I love high Steaks because i learn so many new things and get to spend time with people doing the same stuff as my family. Yeti- I chose my steer Yeti because he stood out to me as a “Silver” steer. Yeti is defenitely finished and he sits like a dog in his pen. He is so quiet and has been a great friend of mine in my 1st year with a steer. I will miss Yeti but know i have gave him the best life he could live.

Brock is 11 years old and lives west of Carstairs on a Bison farm with his parents and three siblings.

This is Brocks first year in Junior beef. His steers name is Rocket and is named after the raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket is a charlais/angus cross. Rocket has lived up to his name and is quite a character! Brock has learned a lot about working with cattle from his steer.

My steer is named Fred. Fred is a Charolais angus cross. I like his colouring and he loves to get scratched. I’ve learnt a lot this year. I like to spend my time with my dog and my 3 siblings.

My name is Sloan Walker and I am almost 12 years old. I have loved High Steaks because I am one of the older kids this year and we have a ton of fun with my family and friends! I just finished grade 6 and am a sports fanatic and love every sport whether it be in person on my hockey team, playing basketball or any sport with my friends or on my gaming time. My steer has the coolest hair and loves to be scratched. He started at 785 pounds and is finished coming into the sale. I chose his name because he has a brockle face calf. Broccoli is my 3rd steer and i hope he places as well as my last few calves. I hope someone enjoys “filling their freezer with Broccoli Beef” because he served me well.

I’m very happy that High Steaks Junior beef club was started as it has taught me many very important lessons on properly feeding, leading, and showing my steer. My steer Danny is an Angus. He is very calm to be around and I am very happy how he finished for me.

My name is London Matthews and I am 11 years old. I like to do art, cook and work on my High Steaks projects. My family and I live on a farm west of Olds called Riverstone Cattle Company and we raised purebred Limousin and Angus cattle. This year my market steer project is named Milkshake. Milkshake is a club calf steer who is really really friendly and super hairy. I purchased him from a friend named Mark Piller who lives in Saskatchewan. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the first year of the High Steaks Junior Beef Show and Sale.

Leah is 11 years old and spends as much time as she possibly can with her animals. Leah knows the cows on the family farm better than anyone else and has spent many hours getting “Hank the Tank” ready for the show and sale. Hank is always happy to see Leah and the feed pail! Leah’s younger sister Megan helps take care of Hark and looks forward to having a steer of her own next year! My sister, Megan, is 8 years old and helps her two sisters everyday with Harold and Hank. She played a big part in taking care of the steers and already has her own steer picked out for next year.

Kaislee loves horses. She also loves to junior rodeo. Her favorite events are Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Goat Tying. She is 9 years old and in Grade 3. Kaislee enjoys working with her Steer and she is looking forward to a summer of riding her horse Elmo. Sleepy sometimes isn’t so “sleepy” He is quiet but sometimes he doesn’t like to be lead and can do a head toss in displeasure. Kaislee has learned a lot from sleepy a this is the first market steer she has had.

My name is Colt Needham and my passion is cattle. This year has been an exciting experience for me. I really enjoyed learning more about embryo transplants and being able to actually see one was great! I would like to thank all of the parents for their time and efforts to give us a fantastic year. I have been very proud to be part of this group and thankful for all of my new friends. I purchased my steer from my Papa Eric Lawrence. I chose him based on this disposition and this potential to be a solid meat machine! His rate of gain all winter has certainly lived up to his potential. My goal this year was to learn more about getting my steer’s hair ready for a show. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Jim & Gwen and Ken & Linda Smith for keeping my steer at their homes; to Andrew & A.J.
