elcome to our 23rd annual bull sale. As we reflect on the year, it was best described as a year to remember! Certainly some moments we would all like to forget, but a year with some tremendous hi-lites as well. Record grain prices, a strong steady fall calf market, a Fall purebred run that was as good as we’ve ever seen. There was as much optimism and hope as any year I had ever seen. Just think how good it would have been if there was an abundance of feed. I truly believe the bulls you purchase this spring will sire the highest priced calves you’ve ever sold. If there is an industry to be in right now, its agriculture!! This year’s catalogue is a bit behind schedule from where we would normally like to be. We started off clipping a few bulls for ads and picturing in late November early December, and then time got away on us. With the calving barn in full swing, and a long harsh cold snap, we had to call in recruits to get things done. A big thanks to Sara Gilchrist who despite a little frost bite did a tremendous job picturing for us that first week of January. Also a huge thanks to our kids, Mackenzie & Garren for their endless hours of commitment to the farm. Mom & Dad for feeding for us when we’ve been tied up in the calving barn. Gary Waldron our right hand guy. A running joke here is he has been employee of the month for 12 months running now. Gary isn’t just a hired hand, he’s family, he is seriously a huge part of our program and we can’t thank him enough. Kathy Matejka, who always works magic on our catalogue and ads, and keeps us calm when we are up against the deadlines. All the others who pitched in one or two days when we needed a hand to just make it happen, Thank You! We are as excited about this group of bull as any group we have ever offered for sale. They are big and bold beef bulls ready to contribute to the industry, and will showcase as much diversity in the pen as ever. As per usual our sale will showcase a strong majority of Fleckvieh bulls, in fact one of the largest if not the largest selection of Fleckvieh bulls you will find anywhere. We are also very proud of our Red & Black Purebred section, as we have really strived hard to develop a core group of cows to Gary Waldron build from. This is likely our strongest set of Purebred bulls to date, and we are very proud of them. Next is the newest division to our program. This will be the first year featuring a handful of Charolais bulls. The numbers aren’t huge, however we will be breeding 50 head this year, which were all hand-picked for our program, so these bull numbers are sure to grow. I think these bulls will offer some diversity, and as we have several bull customers who do utilize both breeds we felt this would be complimentary to our program. Our philosophy remains the same. We don’t just want to sell you one bull today, we hope to sell you many over time. We demand these bull go out and do a job for you, and add value to our customers programs as well. We invite you to view the bulls any time prior to the sale. If you are unable to attend please contact ourselves or any of our sales staff to discuss your needs. Videos of all the bulls will be up on Facebook, U-Tube as well as the VJV Ponoka website. Mark it in your calendar for the 23rd Annual Genetic Edge Bull Sale - Friday, February 11 – 1:00 at the Ranch. See you there.

Feed & Bull Development Our bulls are raised on a TMR ration, consisting of 2/3 cereal silage and 1/3 corn silage, 1 lb. second cut hay, as well as 12 lbs. of Bull Ration, and free choice mineral. They are raised in a 5 acre yard so they have lots of room for exercise, and are able to go out and cover the ground. We appreciate they could be fed to be bigger, but we also are very proud of the fact we have bulls still out working well into their early teens. The bulls will remain on the same ration up until delivery so they remain on a steady balanced diet to ensure proper development.

Health All bulls are under the watchful eye of Gull Lake Veterinary Services. They receive Vitamin AD&E as well as MUSE at birth. Express 5 and Covexin Plus prior to grass, as well as Express 10 and Covexin Plus, and boosters after weaning. Clean Up and Safeguard in December.

Anchor D Ranch Simmentals Influenced Calf Sales One thing we are always trying to do is figure out ways to add value for you, our customers. For the past several years we have been hosting the “Anchor D Simmental Influenced Calf Sales”, the first Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of October. We had added a fourth in Westlock this year on the first Thursday. This allows feedlots to purchase large groups of calves with similar genetics, and health protocol in a timely fashion or producers wanting to capitalize on acquiring top end replacement females. This also allows for maximum dollars to be realized as it is added value for both buyer and seller. For anyone interested in becoming a part of these sales please contact Dan for more details.

Something new for us in this year’s sale is a handful of these fall born bulls. “Huxley” will not only lead this group but be the feature of the group as well. His dam was a tremendous old cow coming from a top notched cow family that is no stranger to having standouts in the pen. This is a bull that will add power and growth, tremendous length and depth of body. He has a big solid foot under him, and moves like a cat. There is zero doubt in my mind he will cover a large group of cows, produce stellar performance cattle for the feedlot and also leave an excellent set of daughters for your replacement pen.

Last year was “Fort Knox’s” debut. He ran heavy to heifers, but had a solid representation in both the bull sale and female this fall. As you can see he had a large impact in this year’s bull sale being tied with “French Attack” for the largest sire group. I think that says an awful lot about not only the tremendous job he did for us, but also the confidence we have in this great young herd bull. You will notice he does have 4 extra aged sons as we have taken a young bull and bred our fall calvers to the past three years so it’s easier to incorporate them back into the bull band. Because of this, they get every type of cow imaginable. He has done a tremendous job putting his stamp on the pen. Look to his sons to add growth, length, solid color, and exceptional foot structure. They also appear to have his same gentle disposition. We look forward to many more of his offspring in the upcoming years.

The dam of “Hermiston” unfortunately had some health issues the year before so we held her over and spun her into the fall group. She has recovered 100% and looks amazing again. This is technically her first calf, and as a first time mom she did a pretty nice job. “Hermiston” is a dark red bull, who will give you added length, a very nice shoulder set for added calving, and I do feel as though there will be much more performance than what meets your eye. Just a very useful ranch bull.

“Huckleberry” is a very docile, deep bodied bull that really grows on you every day. A fun twist to his story, when we weaned these bull calves going to grass, we lost one of our spring calving cows about 4 days later. We grafted her orphaned calf onto “Huckleberry’s” mom. Although he didn’t make the cut for the bull pen, this cow still managed to raise a decent second calf. I think that says a little something about the maternal ability and mothering instinct this bull should pass to his daughters. Disposition is something we really strive for in our program, and this guy’s got it. Now just look at the bull and I think you will agree he is special. He’ll be your Huckleberry.

“Jacinto” was a standout all spring as a baby, and has always had the look. These “Fort Knox” bulls certainly have a pattern about them. Smooth fronted bulls with added power, great length, and very sound footed. They should calve well, add pounds and last forever. “Jacinto” comes from a great young cow with a powerful pedigree to back her up. Lots of good to be found in this solid package.

We all have those cows in our herd that you maybe don’t really notice on a daily basis, but always notice their calves every fall. Perhaps tracing back to “Antonius”, or “Star Gazer” is where that comes from, but whatever the case this cow is a producer. Her sons are working for Ferrybank Colony, Craigmyle Colony & 619 Land and Cattle, with her daughters all being retained in our herd. “Escobar” will be a highly productive bull that you will be sure to want to check out sale day.

“Anthem” is truly a pen favorite. I am going on record saying his grand dam happens to be my personal favorite cow on the whole place (dam of lot 40). We appreciate this cow family so much, and when Garren chose to sell a full sister to “Anthem” this fall in the production sale, well we decided to add her into our own program. I don’t know if I can endorse this bull much more than that. “Anthem” is a wide topped heavy muscled bull that has certainly turned heads in the bull pen, he’s all there, and has all the right stuff in all the right places. No doubt in my mind this is a potential herd bull in the making, with a stacked pedigree and cow family to back him up.

“Velocity & Vortex” just very well could be the best pair of twins we have ever raised. There dam is an outstanding producer, and when she delivered these twins they didn’t look like twins. Her heaviest birthed calf to date has been 102, so even though they are big twins, I just think they are the real deal. “Velocity” was raised on a foster cow, and is a little behind on weaning weight as his foster dam was hit in the summer by lightning, so the last month on grass he was on his own, but as you can see he hasn’t really missed a beat. “Vortex” was raised by mom herself, and he just so happens to be one of my personal favorites in the pen. He is amazingly good, but his laid back nature is something to really admire. He just loves people. If you do run multiple bulls in a pasture, this would be a good place to double down, but regardless this is an awesome pair of bulls.

“Jorgan” is a bull who I appreciate more every day. A bit more moderate framed than the majority of his brothers, with a bit more calving ease coming through from his “Barbossa” dam. If there is a bull you will want to retain the majority of his daughters from, I would say “Jorgan” would be high on that list. This pedigree is stacked from one end to the other. This is a super thick dark red bull that will work in a variety of herds. You can’t go wrong with a bull like this.

“Jed” traces back to the same cow family as “Jorgan” (lot 9) and shows many of the same characteristics. His grand dam “Serenity” was an outstanding producer for us for many years. We sold her in our fall production sale as a bred heifer where she was the high seller. We later purchased her back in the Crimson Tide production sale a few years later where she once again was the high seller. She then went on to produce several outstanding daughters for us with the most notable being “Barcelona”, who only ever had two bull calves, “Sorcerer & Apex”. To say this cow family can getter done is a huge understatement.

These bulls are bred to last, add fertility, longevity and loads of maternal. Now the old saying is “don’t judge a book by its cover”, well that certainly applies here as I promise these bulls will transmit so much more performance than they show on paper. Every one of “Kate’s” daughters has been retained for her own herd, and every one of her sons has made the sale pen selling to Travis & Lynn Trask, Jent Hoekstra & Reszel Farms. Last fall the sister to “Jervis” was Mackenzie’s high selling female going to Corner View Cattle Co. in Ontario. This is a solid producing cow family that will once again boast one of the largest groups in this year’s bull sale. Very little guess work here.

We lost “Maximus” far too soon, however in his time with us he added a number of outstanding daughters and sprinkled numerous sons throughout the country side. One comment we heard over and over were how happy our customers were with the “Maximus” sons. Extremely fertile, sound structured bulls that add growth, power, performance, foot structure, muscle, color, strong maternal, and loads of hair. We always knew after his loss he would be a bull we went back to in the tank after a few years’ hiatus. Well the time has come and although there are only a couple sons in this year’s sale, we will see more in the future. This is a bull that added as much to our program as any. Buy his sons with confidence. If you never had one before, trust me they were worth the wait.

“Jalapeno” is one of the two “Maximus” sons we will offer for sale this year. We really get to know these bulls that much better during clipping and picturing, and “Jalapeno” is a bull who soon became a family favorite. He was used as bait on more than one occasion on picture days, as he is just a happy go lucky guy who really doesn’t get distracted and can stand there all day. Ironically one of the toughest bulls to picture himself as it takes a lot to grab his attention for a photo. His dam was one of the cows we purchased in the Rocking R cow herd, and quite honestly is one of the true gems of the group. Phenomenal cow, phenomenal bull, phenomenal opportunity, hotter than a “Jalapeno”.

We named this bull “No Doubt” as there is no doubt in my mind he will be pretty special. His dam has been highly productive for us, with her only two daughters both being retained in our own herd and her sons all making the bull pen, selling to Aaron Olson, Chris Bowman, Paul Chontosh, and notably “Shazam” who was used by ourselves and then off to Starwest Farms. Incidentally he sired the high selling sire group in last year’s sale for us. With a limited semen inventory on “Maximus” it was a very select group of cows he was used on. That should be all the endorsement you need to know how we feel about his potential. “No Doubt” he will be good.

“Jericho” is a long smooth fronted bull, just as I spoke of in “Epic’s” write up. He is a bull you can confidently use in about any situation. I assure you will have some added performance and growth based on the bottom side of this pedigree with both “Windsurfer & Razzmatazz” right there. This is a star studded pedigree from a beautiful young cow. I feel as though there is endless potential with him, and a bull that is just continuing to get better and better with time. Perhaps a bit of a sleeper here, but don’t be the one caught sleeping when the hammer falls.

This is the final calf crop for “Epic”. Unfortunately we had to part ways with this gentle giant last spring. We kept him around in hopes he may breed a small group of cows for us but father time had caught up to him and we decided before breeding season his time was done. He left us some incredible progeny over the years producing many high sellers, and many sons and daughters who also produced high sellers for us and others. “Epic” was a bull who added tremendous length and extra growth all combined with great calving ease. In his earlier years we did use him on heifers until his sheer size forced him out of the heifer pen. Some of his sons may show a little more birth weight, but I’ve always maintained birth weight is only a number and not an indication of calving. His sons are built right with great length, smooth shoulder set, yet still have the size growth and performance to lead the pack. Buy his sons with confidence they will be right.

“Jambalaya” had a minor setback post weaning, as boys will be boys and had a minor boo boo for a while after weaning. He has long since recovered and also learnt a valuable lesson in playing too rough. He was a stand out as a calf and all summer long, and honestly comes from one of my favorite “Barbossa” daughters tracing back to the great “Cher” cow family. A full sister was sold in last year’s production sale to Crystal Springs Ranch where she was a high seller, followed up by a full brother in last spring’s bull sale to Peter & Cec Dykstra, and another full sister in our herd will be the dam of lot #61. Yes this is an outstanding cow family, and this bull has all the potential in the world.

Our first few calf crop from “French Attack” we ran very heavy to bulls, so we didn’t part with very many of his daughters. The dam of “Jarrid” was the “chosen one” from that first set of females for us. Honestly if you were to paint the picture perfect female it very well could be her. We really admire the job he has done for us, as they are stamped one after another. Now add the combination of “Epic” and I feel as though we have success. “Jarrid” is a moderate birth weight moderate framed easy fleshing bull. I think if you may be searching for the perfect candidate to fit with a group of young coming second calvers this is the guy. He will still moderate some birth but add a little extra punch.

You want longevity its right here. This is one of the bulls that was a head turner in pasture tours this summer. “Jester” is a ½ sibling to our high selling heifer this fall selling to Faulkner Farms in Arkansas. His dam is an outstanding female, and just due to age we only have two “Rawlins” daughters left in our herd, but are they ever special. “Jester” is a lighter colored bull that will produce a set of bell ringing buckskin steers if used in the right places, and leave a set of females behind that will be awesome. Note he will be one of the youngest calves sale time and will not be a year old yet, but this guy has unlimited potential. A bull that offers lots of versatility and will work on a huge selection of cows. I score him very high on my report card.

I have to admit every year when we plan matings there are a handful that we think could be the right fit for our own program. This is a bull I will be keeping a close eye on when he goes to his new home. His actual weaning date is mid-July, as his dam was open and watching our grass situation made the decision to wean calves earlier. This group was weaned turned back out on grass (with creep feed) and then weighed when we weaned the rest of the bull calves. I think all things considered this bull did extremely well and he has enough “Momentum” to be the special bull I feel he is going to mature into.

It honestly doesn’t seem like that long ago we were anxiously awaiting the first calf crop from “Ulysses”, and now here we are talking about one of our seasoned herd bulls. If ease of keeping is high on your list then have a look at this sire group. “Ulysses” is a massive bull who possesses as much natural thickness and muscle as any bull we have ever had grace our pastures. He is a bull that if he smells food he will put on pounds, and his sons in this year’s sale all seem to appear to have the same trait. Look to “Ulysses” to add that extra thickness and muscle. He will also add extra top and hip, lots of hair and typically very strong on pigmentation. We now have daughters pulling into production with their second calves and they appear to be very solid productive females.

Two things really stand out for me about “Svend”. Point 1 being how I mentioned “Ulysses” typically is very strong on pigmentation, this is one of the un-typical times. The second point being this bull is maybe as close to a carbon copy of his sire as there is. When you really stop and analyze him from head to tail he is virtually identical. I absolutely adore the dam of “Svend” and the pedigree that backs her just makes him that much better. This is a bull that I grow to admire just that much more every day. I think when he gets to be 4 or 5 years old he will stop people in their tracks. He’s honestly just damn good.

Look to “Judd” to add extra growth and performance, thickness, great color pattern and all while working with a very nice birth weight. To me he is a cowboy’s kind of bull, low maintenance and big dividends.

Garren purchased the dam of “Taboo” from Ferme BMS in Quebec. This is an outstanding cow, who Garren has retained one phenomenal daughter from, and has marketed a bull to Craigmyle Colony and a female this fall to Stone Simmentals. Although he is one of the youngest in this year’s sale, this is a bull I expect big things from. He is an absolute tank and has been right from birth. He is a bull that will likely moderate frame to a degree, yet his calves will weigh like lead. Another bull that I feel may be a bull that may get passed by slightly just due to age. This is a bull that I honestly feel in an April sale could very well be found at the front of the pack. Be sure to have a close look at him, he’s a dandy.

The dam of “Jacobi” is one of those cows that it doesn’t matter if we breed her to calving ease or power, she is going to put her own stamp and birth weight on them. This is a bull that I would suggest that if someone has a set of British or moderate framed exotic cows that you want to add some thickness and growth to this will be a great choice, not to mention the fact that the dam of this bull is as good of cow as they come. I don’t expect his calves to be tiny but I also don’t anticipate any calving issues with him. He is designed for use on mature cows and he will excel at this task. Thank me in the fall when you sell his calves they will be worth a little more.

This is “Jiff”. He is from a great old cow, which has raised some absolute crackers for us over the years. You can never go wrong with a “Razzmatazz” cow, as you know they will just flat out produce. “Jiff” is a twin to a bull, who didn’t make the cut based on numbers, but did make it to the final drive, so I think that does say quite a bit for the production of this cow. There will be a lot more to him than what meets the eye and when those first calves hit the ground you will be saying “What in the world, wholly nut butter!” Once you’ve had “Jiff” nothing’s the same.

“Asgard” comes to us via our Embryo Transplant program. I have said more than once that not all recip cows are created the same, “Asgard” is the perfect example of that. For those of you who maybe haven’t caught it yet, he is a full sibling to “Mr. Gibbs”. Trust me there is so much more to this bull than what meets the eye. There is no end to the power, and growth that “Mr. Gibbs” transmits, and “Asgard” has the absolute same ability to do so. My free advice is roll the dice, however I don’t think it’s even a gamble, keep as many daughters as you can, and reap the rewards from the phenomenal set of steer calves he is going to sire. Well all good things must come to an end. Garren’s very first cow was “Tyra” and did she ever leave a legacy behind. Garren wanted to leave her open and flush her, and I had suggested let her have one more calf and then we will do it, as we knew time wasn’t on her side. Well unfortunately a couple hours after she delivered “George” we went down to the barn to discover him up and walking around and she had unfortunately done the splits on the cement. We tried our best but unfortunately this was to be her last calf. George was raised on a foster dam, and developed quite a personality, which isn’t hard for this cow family to do. There is little guess work here as this cow family has delivered time and time again, and will have 15 representatives in this year’s sale tracing back to the “Tyra” cow family . To say this cow had a huge impact on our herd is an understatement.

She has sired numerous herd bulls already, most notably her first calf “Outlook” who has had a huge impact in the breed through semen sales. There is zero doubt in my mind his ½ brother, “Revelation” (Lot #78) in this year’s sale will also create quite a buzz. Its herd bull time, now we just need to decide who wants to own him.

What can we say about “French Attack” that we haven’t already said? I was actually thinking the other day we always select a group of cows to AI, to not only have some outcrossed genetics, but also to get additional influence from some of the top sires in the breed. Then I thought, not to sound bias or boastful, but we have one of the top sires in the breed walking in our pen. We have sold a very limited number of daughters from him to this point however this fall we did add 10 daughters in our production sale where they averaged $13,100. On four calf crops his sons have still averaged in excess of $10,000, and keep in mind he has had the largest sire group practically every year. This bull has had a huge impact on our herd and the breed as well, and his progeny is just carrying on from where he has left off. If you haven’t got one yet this is you opportunity to “Attack”.

We purchased a limited amount of semen on “Electric Avenue” a high selling Polled “French Attack” son, and flushed our main donor cow “Ziley” to him. “Ziley” of course is the dam of “Raptor”, and she has worked so well with “French Attack” we thought it could be pretty cool to not only produce a polled son from this cross but a potentially homozygous polled son. Unfortunately we won’t have results back in time for catalogue print, so please stay tuned, however regardless if he is or isn’t homozygous polled, he is more importantly homozygous good. Easy keeping, low maintenance, extremely sound in every dimension, and has a personality that is a pleasure to be around, and she transmits all these traits to her offspring as well. You may remember “Gisele” who happens to be the full sister to “Durazo” at some of the shows as a calf and yearling. Unfortunately with no shows she missed out showing as a two year old, but I suspect she may resurface again this summer with her “Creed” heifer calf at side. Regardless I think it’s safe to say she’s Garren’s pride and joy. Well here’s the chance to own the full brother in “Durazo”. This is the first bull calf from this outstanding young cow. My gut tells me this young female is one of our superstars in the making. She has had two daughters so far both being retained in our herd, and her son is no slouch. This young cow is the epitome of what a Fleckvieh cow should look like. He is one of the youngsters in the pen and won’t be a year old yet come sale day. I also encourage you to notice his birth weight. Perhaps a little higher for some, but I always say birth weight is just a number, calving ease is something totally different. We always notice our younger calves will tend to creep up on birth weight, as those cows are locked in that much longer with nothing to do but eat and sleep, and grow a baby. Dan’s free tip, don’t get caught flat footed on this guy, he is going to be a hell of a bull and may slide a little under the radar.

“Eustace” wasn’t a planned mating, as “French Attack” once again had to pull double duty filling in for another bull, hence why “Eustace” is a youngster in the group. He is a brother to our lead off and high selling bull “Ozark” from a few years ago selling to Silver Lake Farms & Wolfe Farms. This cow also has progeny at R & P Weeks, Croft Creek Ranch, & Graff Simmentals. This is another of our no miss cows, tracing back to the great “Miss Arnold ” cow family. I am a super fan of this bull and contemplated retaining him to sell as a two year old just due to his age. No doubt a top candidate right here.

“Holtby” was a young calf we really liked as a baby and made the decision to hold him over for a two year old. This bull is wicked good, and we just felt as a calf wouldn’t be appreciated for what he truly is. This big tanky, dark red heavy pigmented bull, has always had the look. You have to admire the broad top and absolute substance this bull possesses. Now combine all that with the pedigree and voila, herd bull. Yes his mother is out of our great old “Maximus” bull, but more importantly she is a sister to “Viper”. Star studded pedigree, and equally matched with a power house beef bull. I think you will all appreciate him now. (Virgin Bull)

“Hitch” was another of the babies we held over, and incidentally was the last calf born in the year. He is a super long bodied bull, who is the only “Mr. Gibbs” son to sell in this year’s sale. We unfortunately had issues with “Mr. Gibbs” last year hence there are no yearlings, however we are looking forward to another calf crop this year, and if all goes well he will be entering his 10th breeding season for us again this year. There is a ton of longevity in this guy’s pedigree, and if you are looking to make momma cows he will darn sure do that. “Hitch” possesses incredible length of spine and a real nice shoulder set. This is a bull that will cover a big group of cows and last for a lifetime. (Virgin Bull)

If you have last year’s catalogue you will find “Harlan” as lot #66. He was sold in last year’s sale, and with cold shock when he was ready to do the job, he wasn’t ready for the job, so we swapped him out and gave them another bull instead. This really creates a unique opportunity for us, as we usually don’t have very many 2 year old bulls on offer, and then to have a 2 year old heifer bull is something even better. This is a cow family that always moderates birth weight, and being a “Precision” son, I feel he will be as close to bomb proof of calving bull as we can produce. Not only that, he has performance to back him up as well. This is a bull that was a fan favorite last year, and has only aged like fine wine. These three two year old bulls ran out with our herd bulls until December 1, no extra pampering. They are developed and ready to go. Have your hammer cocked he’s the real deal.

The good just keeps getting better. Man did we luck out when we purchased “Precision & French Attack” the same year. Two totally different bulls, with totally different purposes, with one thing common, excellence. “Precision” was purchased as a calving ease specialist, but I will be the first to admit when it comes to our heifers I expect more. I don’t want them to just have a calf, I want them to have a calf of substance and value and be able to compete in the pen. “Precision” has not only given us that, he has exceeded our expectations, and rivals “French Attack” as a favorite. Now part two of the equation, is his daughters and their production, and once again he has passed our expectations. This past year just due to his sheer size we decided to only use him as clean up in the heifer pen, but did AI a group of heifers to him. Now yes some of the heifers were sale heifers but put this into perspective we had 70 head bred to him. That’s how confident we are in this breeding masterpiece.

As we move into a few more of our calving ease type bulls we lead off with “Shot”. This bull comes from Garren’s 4H cow, where “Tequila & Shot” were named Champion Cow calf Pair at both Club and Interclub level as well as Supreme Club Champion Female. This is a bull with a stellar pedigree which boasts not only calving ease but its fair degree of performance and reads extremely well on paper. “Shot” is a tremendous young prospect that will certainly appeal to many breeding programs, and will be a bull that can be used virtually anywhere. Another bona fide calving ease candidate. “Roz” is another cow that comes to Garren Via the 4H program. She was shown as a calf alongside her dam, where they were named champion pair. This is a great young cow with a super laid back disposition, and has a ton of performance on the bottom side of the pedigree. “Alfredo” as I said certainly fits the bill as a calving ease candidate, but also as I mentioned the back side of this pedigree is as powerful as they come. This is a bull that may surprise you with how much performance is actually there. Coming from a first calver yes he’s a little smaller than his contemporary group, but this bull is a hidden gem.

To say this first calving heifer hit it out of the park would be a gross understatement. Not only did she raise this monster, but re-bred earlier and delivered a set of bull calves already this year. We purchased her dam from Virginia Ranch where they offered choice on two heifers the one year buyer gets one they kept one. I think that speaks volumes of their thoughts of “Jagger’s” grandmother. He may have more than enough punch to be used on heifers, however he will still offer a ton of calving ease while obviously boasting lots of performance. “Jagger” is a bull who caught my eye all summer and has never slowed down. “Jerrard” is perhaps one of the thickest deepest bodied bulls in this year’s offering. His dam comes from the great “Cher” cow family and as a bred heifer was certainly a heifer that was among our top picks. She is also a full sister to Lot #18. We did sell a full sister to her 2 years ago, where she was one of the high sellers, going to Crystal Springs Ranch, BC. We haven’t parted with a huge number of these females from this cow family and as you look through the bull sale catalogue you will see it is one of the largest representations in the entire sale. This is another bull I highly suggest you look towards to developing the core strengths of if looking to add a large number of replacement females. This is an awesome young cow that I have huge hopes for. She comes from an outstanding cow family, and her grandmother smacked out a front ender in last year’s bull sale selling to Madge Simmentals. His offspring are typically super docile, and seem to be extremely fertile. He sired our high selling bull in last year’s sale “Hefner” selling to Dobbie Simmentals in Ontario, and we only parted with one daughter this fall that fetched an outstanding $17,000. Ah yes, “Cruz” another bona fide calving ease bull. I have been a huge fan of this calf and his young dam right from the get go. Aptly named “Cruz” as I feel you will be on cruise control when you put him to work on your heifers. Pedigree reads right, bull looks right, it must be right. He is yet another bull tracing back to the great “Cher” cow family, but factors in so much more with “Raptor” in his pedigree as well. This is a bull that is stacked solid on paper, and has always had that special look about him. He’s always stylin’ and profilin’ ready to go for a “Cruz”.

“Jenesis” is another polled calving ease candidate. Nope not the biggest bull in the pen, he is designed to work on heifers, and he will work there for some time. I always feel searching for a heifer bull is the hardest thing to do. First you walk in the pen and naturally gravitate to the big powerful performance bulls. Then when you look at the heifer bulls you want more. Well yes I agree, but then consider this. When that first calf hits the ground up and running nursing within minutes, I think we all agree that heifer gets a head start on being a cow as well. That right there is added value, maybe not in that first calf but the productivity of that cow long term and down the road. That’s “Jenesis” is a nut shell.

He is a bull that if you want to breed some heifers to him I feel confident enough he will work well there, but I feel extremely confident if you throw him on your mature cows he will bring home large pay cheques, one after another. Well this is the 10 year anniversary of “Barbossa” having bulls in the sale. It sure doesn’t seem like that many years ago when I saw him strolling over the hill alongside his dam in Quebec and I remember calling home to Karen that night saying I think there is a bull calf here we need to own. Wow has he ever left an impact in our herd. He has sired his share of high sellers over the years but interestingly it’s been his daughters who have gone on to produce numerous high sellers over the years. Look to his sons to add calving ease for sure, but more so longevity, foot structure, performance and his daughters have such great udder shape and attachment. He may be gone but his legacy will carry on for years to come.

This is a bull I have long considered keeping for ourselves as “Barbossa’s” replacement. As a first calver this is how we bred this cow, and she has given us all bulls, selling to Nickel Farms, Javier Jaugregui in Mexico, Primrose Farms, & Dennis Herman. All four bulls’ dark red, and extra pigmentation. “Righteous” didn’t get the memo about color, but he did about everything else. He’s as good of bull as we have walking in the pen, and for a bull with added calving ease just note the performance. His picture doesn’t do him justice as he was pictured on one of the -30 days, and the bulls had a little brew ha the night before, and a photo is much like a semen test only being a snap shot of a picture in time, but I promise he is as good of bull as we have produced.

I didn’t do a homo polled test on him as we did discover he has small scurrs when we clipped heads, but regardless this bull is plumb good and comes from a superb cow family. “Resolution” has all the credentials to be something special, look him over. We have used him on both cows and heifers with great success. He calves extremely well, and he did leave a number of polled calves for us. I appreciate his natural thickness and muscle pattern in a polled package, and he has transmitted that well into his offspring. We look forward to a large group of calves again from him next year and is a sire we will continue to use for some time. Look to his sons to pass along respectable calving ease, performance thickness, and several will be polled.

He could very well be a game changer for someone. His mother is a cow who always throws moderate birth weight calves. If you look up her production record you will see a couple gaps. Her first calf didn’t make the cut so wasn’t registered and she also had an outstanding bull calf from “French Attack” we lost with a twisted gut, but this is a highly productive young cow, and there is something special about “Revolution”.

Another bull that combines calving ease and growth, while offering the polled factor. “Jimmie” is a true character. He has been a pet from the day he was born, and really enjoys people. His dam is a really nice first calving “Excalibur” daughter from a very nice cow family. This was our second set of “Red Heat” calves and we have been very impressed with them and their calving ease. He is a bull that has run short on gestation for us, calves are vigorous at birth, and appear to have more than enough grow in them. “Jimmie” is a legitimate heifer bull in my opinion, and certainly has enough performance to not just be a calving ease bull, and with his tremendous disposition, I am quite certain he will become a favorite for his new owners as well.

He has a pedigree that certainly qualifies him for use in a heifer pen. Anyone who was at our female when his dam sold will certainly remember this beautiful female with the big black birth mark on her side. We really liked the female, and although we didn’t buy her ourselves, Scott left her at our place to calve. This is a really nice young female who is put together right in every way, and was the top pick of the Parkhill Ranch heifers. There is certainly lots of merit to the cow family that backs him up as well, so producing a set of blaze faced daughters will certainly add value as well. We unfortunately parted ways with “Excalibur” this fall, as he ended up with a hip injury during the fall that we just didn’t want to take a chance on. The big gentle giant weighed 2600 lbs. this fall, and is a bull that left us some fabulous replacement females over the years, and a set of sons who have done great things for our valued bull customers. Look to his sons to be bulls that will add frame, power, and hair. The birth weights won’t be small, but there were never any issues calving him on our cows. His calves always have lots of grow, and his daughters we have in production have lots of milk and very good udder attachment. He was a solid old bull who will be missed in our program. We will have one more calf crop from him next year, but just due to our smaller purebred numbers we haven’t retained semen on our purebred bulls to keep more current, so that will be the final group of his sons. “Jupiter” is a power bull with a different dimension to his pedigree. He is a ¼ Fleckvieh, going back to a polled “Stride” cow we purchased from XRC. This big red baldie will produce a smashing set of feedlot steers. His dam is an awesome young cow and if you are wanting to retain daughters he’s a bull that certainly fits that bill as well. As I mentioned the “Stride” factor in his pedigree, I will go on record to say he was probably the best footed bull we ever owned, and maybe the biggest footed bull I ever seen. I think the sky is the limit for “Jupiter”. Homo Polled test pending

A neat back story on “Hashtag”. We purchased his dam as a heifer calf from LaBatte Simmentals. We had actually tried buying two at their sale and only ended up with one so I had mentioned to Barry, just pick us out one that you think is as good as the high seller, which we didn’t get, and deliver her at the same time. If you’re ever going to get someone to do that for you Barry is the guy. I’m pretty certain “Hashtag’s” dam came right out of the keeper pen, and being a female that went back to the “Pocahontas 105L” cow family, well we were thrilled to say the least. This is an awesome cow, and “Hashtag” is an awesome bull. This is a bull I feel has as much potential as any, and regardless if he goes to a breeder or a commercial herd, someone is going to be more than thrilled. This is a hell of a herd bull in the making and with the “Scream & Pocahontas” cow families backing him, yep he’s going to be good!! Homo Polled test pending.

We have had several Parkhill cows over the years, and they are straight goods. These cows just seem to get the job done on a consistent basis. “Jalisco” comes from a big bold broody female we purchased from Les in our production sale, where she was his high selling lot. This is a female that pours everything into her calf, and is a big time performance female. She has crossed very well with “Excalibur” for us and “Jalisco” is another bull I feel highly confident in saying when his steer calves hit the sale ring at your local market you will have the potential of seeing the high dollar calves of the day. Another youngster and a bull I think you will truly appreciate. “J Peg” is a bull from another very productive cow family, tracing back to one of our original Purebred cows. We purchased a strong group of Purebred cows from Porter Ranches, and there were several “Robin Hood” daughters in that group. These were extremely fertile productive cows that always seemed to put a very marketable bull in the sale. “J Peg” in a descendant from one of those very cows and for generations they have done the same thing, delivered moderate birth weights, high fertility, ease of fleshing and lots of longevity. “J Peg” is just plumb useful and will certainly appeal to many different breeding programs. This bull will be a sale sleeper. He is crafted right just a bit smaller due to the fact that he is a twin. In all likely hood this is a calf that should typically be more of a 90-100 birth weight calf, and in fact she delivered a full brother to him this year at 95 lbs. “Blackscalibur” is the lone black entry in this sire group. He is a younger bull as well not quite reaching a year old come sale day. He is one of just a few calves that was weaned in July and turned back out on grass after weaning. On a typical year we likely would have left these calves on for a while longer, but knowing you have an open cow when we were a bit short on grass was an easy decision to wean early. I am fairly certain we would have easily added a few more pounds on to his weaning weight and in turn yearling weight, buy regardless this is still a very solid young bull with a bright future. “Matador” is a bull we raised that certainly offers a unique pedigree for our program as well as many others. We flushed “Precious” to “Liner” and the results were quite good. Most of the calves came black or black blazed and “Matador” was the token red. This is his second set of sons we will offer for sale and we are very happy with the job he has done for us. To see him in person he is very impressive as he is a medium framed bull that is built like a tank, huge topped, heavy muscled and loaded with hair. He is extremely easy keeping and easy fleshing, a trait we are sure he will pass along. Look to his sons to add thickness, depth of body, broad tops and over all dimension.

He is a powerful bull with a pedigree equally as powerful. I know he is going to sire a very strong set of replacement type females, but I really think he is going to shine when you see a powerful set of steer calves by him come trapesing across the scale. She once again traces back to our good old “390Z” cow which you will have noticed a few times in the pedigrees on our Purebreds. “Super Duty” is a bull we utilized through AI and appreciated him so much we went and found a son to use. “Joaquin” is an attention getter. Maybe partially because of his unique facial markings, or maybe because he just really good. His dam is a moderate framed cow, who absolutely puts everything into her calf. If we were to actually figure out on a per individual basis cost of production I bet his dam would be one of the highest ratio cows, she is a money maker, not a money taker. A very user friendly birth weight, and still has enough gas in the tank to keep him in the power bull running. I would say if he was a bull I was going to add into my herd, I would sort off some of my top cows I know I want to retain females from, and cross my fingers that majority are heifers. I know “Black Pearl” is more of a girl name, but being a black bull from “Barbossa” it only seemed fitting. We bred the majority of our black purebred heifers to “Barbossa” with all of them coming as heifer calves except this guy. Probably our best black Purebred cow is a “Barbossa” daughter and with his semen in short supply we felt this was something special. “Black Pearl” will be a bull that will transmit calving ease, but he is also a bull I would strongly suggest to keep a high percentage of his daughters as they will be mind blowingly good, with impeccable udders. “Hans” is something totally different for us. As I had mentioned right at the start of the catalogue we do have just a handful of these extra aged bulls, and “Hans” is the lone purebred. Just due to numbers we ran 1 bull with the whole group, so that being said “Hans” is a total outcrossed purebred pedigree. If I had a set of solid Black Angus cows, I couldn’t think of a more qualified candidate to fill the job. This big powerhouse will add pounds, and add some chrome to those calves, while keeping them moderate still in birth and remaining polled. I see this bull working extremely well on any British based set of cows, and with the extra age you know he’s going to do a bigger job. A very neat option here.

Mom and Dad will be selling their entire heifer calf crop again this year, as they are at the stage where they are no longer wanting to retain heifers. No the numbers aren’t huge but the quality is high. Just due to weather we did not clip and picture these heifers, so the photos you see are of last year’s group. They are basically full sisters for the most part as their cows were bred to the same bulls perhaps some slight variations but you get the picture. Their cows run with ours so the health protocol is exactly the same as the bulls, and we will palpate the heifers prior to the sale to ensure breeding soundness. Also note we did cull a couple that we didn’t feel were up to par, so buy with confidence knowing these heifers are selected the same as they would be if they were being retained for their own herd.

The Charolais are a new division for us and although our numbers for this year’s sale are small, we will have a larger number in the future as we will be breeding 50 head this spring. A huge thank you to Horse Shoe E & Bob’s Charolais for giving us the opportunity to develop this division of our herd. Please note the three Charolais bulls on offer this year are all just a year of age. As we expand and move forward the bulk of our Charolais calves will be January bulls to fit in and complement our Simmental program.

“Diesel” is a very smooth fronted soft made bull. His dam is an extremely sound good footed cow who has contributed bulls to the Horse Shoe E bull sale in the past. It’s been a large adjustment for these bulls as they came to us mid-summer from no grass, to lush grass, it has been a transition. It has been really fun to watch how these bulls have really started to come on and develop once they were weaned and started on feed. I think “Diesel” will just continually improve as he has really made a move as of late, and for a mid-February calf shows huge potential. Look to him add power and pounds to your calf crop. “Jester” is our inaugural lead off Charolais bull. He is sired by the easy calving “Legend” bull and tracing back to a strong pedigreed French influenced cow on the bottom side. When we selected this group of cows from Horse Shoe E “768E” was our pick of the group. This is a bull who is built extremely smooth and should calve great, yet still add that extra punch and power to produce a smashing set of buckskin steers. “Jester” has a great hip and top, profiles extremely well and is just a bull you appreciate more and more each day. I am really looking forward to see how he continues to mature as I think he is going to be very impressive. Homo Polled test pending.

“Architect” is the calving ease bull of the group. He comes from a beautiful young cow who shows a whole lot of potential. She is a beautifully sculpted cow with perfect udder attachment, and really nice foot structure, besides her exceptional length of body and overall make up. Her sire “Round Up” is a bull we were impressed with the progeny we seen. This is a very smooth fronted clean made young bull, who has probably had the most change since weaning. He will calve very well and produce those highly sought after buckskin steers in the process. Homo Polled test pending.
