Anchor D "Genetic Edge" Bull Sale 2017

Bull Sale • February 10, 2017 • 1:00 p.m.

nother truly outstanding bull sale season is in the books for 2016. With an abundance of moisture, the water table should be built up, and we should expect an early boost for spring pasture and crops. I appreciate the harvest had some trying moments, but the abundance of feed going into this fall was very evident, reflecting on another great fall commercial calf run, where once again the heavy weight calves demanded the premium, a strong bred cow market, and an equally impressive fall purebred sale season. 2017 has the makings of being equally every bit as good or better. 2016 was a tremendous year for us here at Anchor D Ranch. We weaned not only the largest number calf crop we ever have, but also the heaviest on average. We have always focused on early maturing cattle that meet the commercial cattleman’s needs. Bottom line is if they don’t work for you, they won’t work for us. This group of bulls we present to you for our 18th Annual bull sale have been culled down from a breeding group of over 400 head to the numbers you see presented to you today. We place high importance on physical soundness, performance, and dispositions. We have a wide variety in sire groups represented, and always try to add some new bloodlines through AI or new herd bulls, to add diversity to our pen, balanced out by our old faithful bull battery. We have always maintained that you are always on the hunt for that next great bull, and when he comes along be prepared to add that next piece into your puzzle. This year some 30 different sires will be represented, essentially there will be something for everyone. As in the past one of our goals is to add value to you our customer. The Anchor D influenced calf sales were a great success again, with producers topping the market on the respected days they sold on. These sales have been very rewarding in being able to not only showcase the programs of these great commercial cattlemen, but also see a premium being awarded for superior genetics. We are also very proud to be teamed up with Boehringer, and to be recognized as one of the herds with “Elite Herd Health Status”. We work super close with Gull Lake Veterinary Service, and under their helpful watch have elevated our entire herd to the Express 10 program. Our commitment is to produce superior genetics, with a superior health protocol. The bulls themselves are on the same feed program as in the past, being fed a TMR cereal silage ration. This is an extremely diverse and powerful set of calves. They may tend to not have the pounds they have the past few years, about 50 lbs less, as October, and much of November were virtually a write off for feeding in the mud, they more or less maintained. I realize we could have perhaps pushed them a little more, however we felt it was more important to stick to our program to ensure these bulls will go out and last. The true story is they weaned off as a heavier group than ever before, what they are able to do, and how they are fed are two different things. Also this year there are no featured bulls, for a couple reasons. Catalogue space, but also many people have said we don’t even look at the feature bulls, they will be out of our range. Truth be known every bull in this sale is a feature bull. Yes some are better than others, but they are all designed for a purpose. Some will excel at one trait, others at multiple traits. Bottom line is if they made the cut they are a feature to someone’s specific program, buy with confidence. This is one of the most powerful set of bulls we have ever presented, with a wide range of power bulls, to extreme calving ease bulls, and everything in between, offered in polled or horned, Purebred or Fullblood, it’s all here. They are all backed by the Anchor D guarantee, and promise, to supply you with the best customer service we possibly can. We understand the purchase of your next herd bull is a serious investment, and we have not only bred these bulls to last, but fed them to last to maximize their genetic input into your herds. We extend our invitation to join us February 10 for a great Alberta bred steak prior to the sale. If you are unable to attend sale day, or wish to view the bulls prior to the sale, feel free to stop in anytime. We look forward to seeing you Friday, February 10, at Anchor D Ranch. This will be the last large sire group from “Maximus”, as we lost him in the fall of 2015. He was a bull that did an awful lot for us in a short period of time, including siring the $60,000 “Raptor” bull in last year’s sale, selling to Ferme Gagnon & Canadian Sires. “Maximus” was an amazing breeding bull. As a yearling he bred 34 cows, and seems to transmit that libido and fertility onto his sons, a trait that is extremely valuable. His most valuable traits are his ease of fleshing, and performance, combined with a superior structure and body type, with great feet and legs, topped with a tremendous hair coat, dark red, and pigmentation. His daughters are very fertile and super productive as well. He was a great herd bull that is dearly missed here.

“Capone” truly is a gangster. This big monster has also stood out from day one, and comes from one of our very best cows. His full sister “Regan” has turned a few heads at the YCS events, and managed to hold her own in the shows, always placing near the top of the class, and boasting a very good show career to date. I would suspect “Capone” will add extra growth, extra length, extra depth, and extra thickness to your wallet when you market his calves. One of the real good ones in this year’s sale.

The “Calvary” has arrived. This has been one of my favorite calves from the day he was born. He has always had the look, and maybe wasn’t always #1 in the pen, but always at the top. His unique bloodlines on the bottom of his pedigree will offer an outcross for many, and is bred to be elite. His dam is an extremely easy keeping female that is in show shape 365 days a year. I honestly feel he is among some of the best we have ever produced. “Calvary” is a bull that is very hard to find a flaw in, and is a bull that could lead the charge for any breeding program.

I’m going to give you a solid sales pitch on “Denver”. He is an extremely solid bull, but may tend to get a bit overlooked sale day due to his flowery complexion. Do not be fooled by a little extra white, this has been one of our most reliable cow families over the years. I must admit I was a bit sad the day he was born, as I was really hoping for a heifer with this cross. If you happen to be the lucky buyer sale day, do yourself a favor, sort a group of your favorite cows you want to keep replacement heifers from. His steer calves will be awesome, but his daughters will lay the smackith down on you.

When I set up catalogue we pretty much line it up by sire group, and age within that group. Ironically enough last years show stopper “Raptor” was lot #5. Let me introduce you to this years lot #5 “Battalion”. He has the credential to be a show stopper in his own right. He too has been a stud from the day he was born, and was noticed by many on this years pasture tours. He not only looks the part, but has the pedigree to not only make him get noticed, but demand to be noticed. His dam is none other than “Viper’s” little sister. As a first calver she produced our high selling bull in to 2014 sale, “Gunner” going to Alta Genetics. “Battalion” is a bull that deserves a spot in the industry, and will do great things in his time.

This past year, a little “Solway Adonis” came through on the color patterns on 3 of the “Maximus” calves, all of which made the bull pen. I encourage you to really stop and look at “Omaha” as he is simply among the best of this year’s group in my mind. There is nothing I would change about him. He possesses tremendous length, an outstanding muscle pattern, extremely sound in his makeup, great depth of heal, a phenomenal hair coat, and two tone paint, which in many cases you actually have to pay more for. If you want to take things a step further check out his older brother “Entourage”, he should mature into a very similar package.

“Mortamer” is the first of two consignments for Garren. His dam is an outstanding productive “Damascus” daughter. We leased “Damascus” a couple years to try and get some daughters, and what tremendous cows they make. “Mortamer” is just a plumb honest bull that will supply ease of fleshing, moderate birth, ample performance, and with that shot of “Antonius” right close, superior females. This will be a super rancher type bull that will allow him to be used on a super broad spectrum of cows.

“Landrover” is from one of our most reliable cows. She has produced bulls such as “King’s Ransom, Camouflage & Fake ID”, all of who have left their mark, as well as several great commercial bulls. Her biggest downfall is she has only ever given us one daughter, but wow has she left an impact. When “Landrover” was born I came up and mentioned to Karen if we couldn’t find a replacement for “Maximus” he was maybe just born. My expectations for him are huge, and I do feel as though he will outbreed himself. Be sure to look him up sale day this is one of the bulls you will want to pay attention to, trust me.

This smooth made bull will offer moderate birth, combined with natural fleshing ability, super style, add extra pigmentation and hair and explosive maternal characteristics. This will be the very first bull calf to be sold from “Puzzle’s” dam for us. We purchased her as a mature cow in our production sale from Porter Ranches, and even though this is her first bull calf for us, she is no stranger to the winners circle, producing the $20,000 “Unlimited” bull in her past. She is a female that seems almost timeless, as she certainly does not show her age, as she could pass for a 5 or 6 year old cow. I believe this bull could prove to be a very valuable breeding piece to anyone’s genetic “Puzzle” and will contribute great things to a variety of types of cow herds.

Powerhouse. I would love to have a whole pen full of bulls like this. His full brother sold in last year’s sale to Chamberlands for $13,000, and he too was a standout. I realize there is a bit more birthweight here than some of you may desire. Do yourself a favor sale day. Walk through the pens and try to find a bull longer spined than “Damon”. That extra length is worth an extra 10 lbs at calving, but doesn’t calve any harder. It’s also worth an extra 50-100 at weaning, and is worth that much more. $$’s invested = $$’s gained, simple math.

This is an exciting addition for us in this year’s sale. “Entourage” is a bull we sold as a yearling in our sale to Rocking R Simmentals. I mentioned to Rod at the time if he was ever to sell him we would appreciate first opportunity to purchase him back. Thanks Rod & Karen for giving us that opportunity. This is his first calf crop for us, and interestingly enough, he has the largest sire group in this year’s bull pen. His calves possess exceptional length, and muscle shape, much like himself, as well as that same eye appealing package. For such a massive power bull, he also provides a degree of calving ease, and has been used on heifers in the past. He is a huge footed bull, which is a trait I am certain he will pass on, and his calves are super laid back and have his same great disposition. If you haven’t seen him in person, he is a must see, he is a favorite of many viewers.

I know for myself it’s tough to appreciate each bull in such a large group, and “Commence” is a bull that doesn’t necessarily stand out at first, but typically once a week I come back from feeding saying wow, that’s a really good bull. He is one of those individuals that just grows on you more and more every day. His dam is a “Throttle” daughter and we have about a half dozen of these cows in our herd, and they are all super good, in fact the grandmother of “Raptor” last year’s high seller was a “Throttle” daughter. Pure Power would be the best description of “Sting Ray”. His dam is a direct daughter of the great 409M donor cow from Bar 5, we purchased in a pregnant recip. This cow is a spitting image of her dam, and looks as though she will be every bit as productive. She was extremely ill with mastitis a couple years ago, and was unable to stick in calf, so she ran dry for the year, hence the extra birth weight in “Sting Ray”. Use that to your advantage, as this is super smooth made bull that will calve well, and transmit those extra pounds in the fall. He is a bull that has stood out in the pack from about a month old, and has never looked back. Put a big star beside him in your catalogue.

I realize as twins it’s hard to evaluate based on birth weight, but this is a very smooth fronted pair of bulls that will calve very well. They were split at birth, and “Yang” had an advantage, being given to an extremely heavy milking mature cow, whereas “Ying” stayed with mom, and she certainly was behind as just a second calver and being down somewhat in condition, his weight may not entirely reflect his true power. She is a great little cow that raised a good bull as a first calver, selling to Kim Lubbers. End of story is this is a wicked good pair of bulls that I am quite certain anyone would be proud to have grace their pastures. Let the powers of the “Ying & Yang” go to work for you.

“Bombay” is another bull that reminds me so much of his sire in his physical make up. His dam would rank among one of my favorite cows, and if you keep the Anchor D catalogues around you will know how much I appreciate his grand dam “Sonita”, this entire cow family, and the job they have done here. I promise there won’t be a single bull sale catalogue that this cow family hasn’t been mentioned somewhere. “Bombay’s” bio is brief. His steers will be big and powerful. His daughters will be Rock Stars, keep them all. Put him in your front pasture where everyone can see him, he will be worth bragging about. He’s one of this years bests.

Poole’s Arrow Ranch, BC, Joe Barnett, SK, Bear Canyon Colony, AB , Wells Crossing Cattle CO., AB and Virginia Ranch, AB, many of which were high sellers in the year they sold. I spoke of the great job the “Throttle” daughters can do, “Grayson is from another direct daughter, backed by the great “Miss Image 21J” cow family. She is a cow that unfortunately never made the donor pen, but her influence on our herd is massive. This is a line that will typically moderate birth and supply huge growth. “Grayson” would no doubt be one of the larger birth weights from this cow family, but when you add in that much extra length, it’s pretty easy to add 10 extra pounds at birth, which generally equates to 50 or more extra pounds at weaning. Outstanding ranch bull.

“Moomba” is one of the newest addition to our bull battery, and although he only has one son in the sale we felt as though he needed to be introduced properly. From the moment I seen him, I instantly fell in love with this bull. He is perhaps one of the easiest keeping, most natural fleshing individuals I have ever seen. He smells feed, he gets fat. As a yearling during breeding, he continued to pack the pounds on and even that much more so as a two year old. He is very agile and athletic, has a really good foot, a huge top, and unbelievable depth of body, deep flank, and huge 1/4. We did have several heifer calves, very, very limited bull calves from him, but he calved extremely well. I expect we will see much more of him in the future , as I realize this is just a teaser for what’s to come.

Epic has been a pretty solid go to guy for us. He is a bull that up until last year seen limited duty in the heifer pen, and just due to his physical size is no longer used there, but certainly provides calving ease with great growth. In his first calf crop he produced both “High Noon & Mazorotti”, both who have become truly outstanding breeding bulls, and have exceeded expectations. His calves have great eye appeal, will have lots of performance, and calve well. He has been very solid in being a color producer as well, also adding pigmentation and extra hair, and the dispositions are extremely good. He has become our #1 go to bull, and for good reason, as he is easy to mate to a huge variety of cows, expecting great results every time.

“Cobalt” comes from one of my favorite cows. She is the type of cow if you could build your entire herd to be just like her you would. Perfect size, structure, udder type, disposition, and fleshing ability. Sometimes they have the look but their production doesn’t match up, not the case here, as she will produce at the top of the class every time. We have two full sisters to “Cobalt” that are flawless, another daughter produced our co high selling female in our summer sale 2 years ago to LaBatte Simmentals, as a first calver. Sometimes creativity is just as simple as putting the same cow back in the same pen that we’ve seen success with before. “Monument” is the results of that very concept. There is a bit of a story that comes with “Dignified”. He was without question one of the feature bull calves all summer long, and rightfully so being a direct son of “Saphire”. She has secured her spot as our number one donor cow, producing time and time again with whoever we throw at her. Her four sons in last years sale averaged just shy of $12,000 and then her natural son “Heist” went on to be the second high seller at Bar 5 dispersal last fall for $20,000. The proof is there this cow can get it done. “Dignified’s” story is about a week before we weaned he incurred a bad shoulder injury. We pulled him from the group and kept him in solitary for several months until he was fully recovered. His weights may not completely reflect what a powerhouse he really is because of this but trust me this is a herd bull. Step in with confidence he is destined for greatness.

“Starsky & Hutch” are a young pair of ET calves from “Precious” who we co-own with LaBatte Simmentals. We were fortunate enough to purchase this great female with them as one of the high selling females out of the Prospect Hill Dispersal sale. She is a phenomenal female that is perhaps the easiest keeping cow I have ever seen. Although she isn’t a huge framed cow, she is massive in body type and muscle mass. The cross with “Epic” is exciting to say the least. We decided to use him as the first flush on her for a couple reasons, and it hasn’t disappointed us. “Starsky & Hutch” are both flawless in makeup, and should both have a bright future in the industry. When sourcing good herd bulls, I can’t stress the importance of being backed by a good cow. These two are from one of the best our breed has to offer, and in just a short time “Epic” has already left an impact in the breed. Very little guess work here, as these two should live up to their sires name and both be epic!!

“Mazorotti” is living proof that all things happen for a reason. He was destined to be the running mate with “High Noon” in the 2015 sale, but injured himself when we were semen checking. These two were definitely the buzz in our bull pen that year, and we felt he was too valuable to send out and run the risk of being injured permanently. We were short a heifer bull for ourselves so decided to hand breed a few and see how he made out. A few went well, and then turned into his own breeding group, and he actually ended up pulling double duty when another herd bull went down. He maybe isn’t completely bomb proof as a heifer bull, but is certainly easy calving, and I think you will concur when you see his 5 sons in the sale, he is a bull that will throw power and great muscle. We have since sold him to R-Five Simmentals, and I’m sure they are quite anxious to see his first calf crop for them.

“Montella” is the only “Mazorotti” son who isn’t directly from a first calver however this is her first calf she has raised. His dam lost her calf at calving the year before and being the last daughter of “Aegina” who was one of my all-time favorite cows, we decided to hold her over. “Montella” has the look to be a great one. He is extremely well balanced, with great muscle development, good performance, combined with a moderate birth weight. As I said his grand dam was one of my all-time favorite cows, who has produced her fair share of great ones in her time, and her daughters have done the same. I have high hopes for “Montella”.

“National Treasure” is without question a pen favorite. This is Garren’s calf from his first calving 4-H heifer. He has seen a few miles on the show road, being shown not only in 4-H but the provincial and National YCS shows, doing quite well for himself. He has also been one of the poster boys for our ads. When you analyze him he is hard to fault, and I promise you will see him, as he loves attention. His disposition truly is second to none. The combination of “Mazorotti and Mr. Gibbs” as well as being shown contributes to his gentle nature. That’s all good but his true value is how good he is. Yes he’s a favorite but for many reasons, he just plain good. Breeders be sure to look at him, he is a Treasure.

She is from “Windsurfer” who certainly is power, and from “Tess” who is a full sister to none other than “Dorothy Jane”. “Tinkerbell” was admired by many at the shows, and has racked up her share of championship banners. She is a perfectly balanced female, with an impeccable udder you wish you could have on every cow. Her future is bright, and her contributions to Mackenzie’s herd will be many. “Spartan & Trojan” come to you via our #1 donor cow “Saphire”. No they are not new genetics by any means, as they have a full brother who has already left a significant mark on the industry, “Venom”. “Venom & Viper” were the one two combination in the 2010 sale, where they both brought $23,000. We have used “Venom” ourselves over the past several years, on both cows and heifers with great success. Look to both these bulls to add length and muscle shape, with refined front ends, and great style with good performance. They will make them dark red, and add loads of hair as well. This will be an extremely solid pair of bulls, and although they will be a minimum of a month younger than the good majority of the rest of the bulls, should not be over looked, they will be a dynamic duo.

We are extremely pleased with “Intuition” and the job he is doing for us. He is the epitome of what a Fleckvieh bull is. Moderate frame, huge body mass, he is super deep, has an enormous broad top, super big foot with exceptional depth of heel, big deep chest floor, and tremendous hair. He seems to be passing the majority of these traits along, and is crossing very complimentary with our herd. He had a very impressive sire group last year, and has every bit as equal of group this year. Yes he is straight white faced, but certainly has no issues throwing pigmentation. He is probably the most underrated bull in our battery, but that may very well change after this year’s sale.

A bull built very similar to his sire in all dimensions. As I mentioned earlier in the write up on “Intuition” he may be a bit underrated. It’s because of calves like this that I make that statement, you may not notice him at first, but when you stop and analyze him, as well as the whole sire group you appreciate the whole picture. “Colonial” should produce much the same and will be a valuable asset.

“Premonition” is this year’s hard luck story. Many of you may remember “Gold Brick” who sold as one of the high sellers a few years ago to Cleardale Colony. Well “Premonition” is his full brother. Although the stats may not indicate it, this is a big time performance bull. He was unfortunately orphaned at about 3 months old. We tried grafting him onto a nurse cow, but that was as successful as trying to shove water up a ducks ass, didn’t work. So what you see is essentially what he did on his own. His dam was a prolific producer for us, always producing a front ender, regardless of bull or heifer. “Premonition” will be a great asset, I got a feeling.

“Mr. Gibbs” is a bull who we really appreciate more with each passing day. He was a standout as a yearling, and has passed his tremendous growth pattern, and stellar disposition along to his calves. It’s a pleasure to walk through the pen and see how many of his offspring surface to the top, regardless if they are in the heifer pen or bull pen. We are really seeing his true value in his daughters that are now in production. If I was to describe them in one word it would have to be WOW!! “Mr. Gibbs” did sustain a breeding injury last year, so his calves will be limited next year, however it looks as though he will be back on track with a full slate for this springs breeding. Power, growth, length, hair, muscle, excellent udders are all traits he will improve on.

“Armageddon” is no fluke. His full brother sold in last year’s sale for $12,000 to Double T Cattle Co. and was last years heavy weight bull at weaning, yearling and sale time., big time performance here. This year “Armageddon” was the 3rd heaviest at weaning and is the co-heavy weight in the pen now. All great with such a moderate birth weight as well. He’s not just big pounds though, look at how he is put together, very well proportioned and balanced, and even though he is going to sire a smashing set of steers, don’t hesitate to keep those daughters, as his dam is near perfect, and is a direct daughter of one of our old donor cows in “Emma”. There will be loads of milk in this pedigree and the performance and frame in the calves to take it on.

This is a very nice put together bull. The “Mr. Gibbs” calves are typically pets, “Durant” likes a little space, certainly not a bull that will cause you issues ,but not like his litter mates you have to push out of the way. His dam is a beautiful polled cow, which is smooth as silk. “Durant” is very similar in type, as his shoulders just blend in so nice to his body and back to a big deep rear 1/4. This will be another bull that may get missed a little come sale day so be sure to track him down. A little plainer colored, and isn’t under your feet when looking through the pen so he’s a bit easier to miss, but trust me he’s worth checking out.

“Distinction” is from one of those cows that never gets really noticed until weaning time, when you notice the whopper she drug into the pen alongside her. She has produced some real classics in her time with a heifer at Bauers in ON, sons at Ingrams in, AB & Simpsons in, BC. This is a bull with a typical “Mr. Gibbs” attitude that if I stand here long enough someone will notice me, maybe scratch me, perhaps bring me some food, I’m in no rush I will be here all day. This is a great bull, with perfect coloration, great hair, and beautiful shape and muscle pattern. Another bull that will be extremely diverse and work on a rainbow of cows. An easy bull to put a check mark by.

A different twist of pedigree this time. “Zurteck” is from a cow we imported from Agro Zurita via Buzzard Hollow Ranch in Texas, as a 5 month old calf. She has developed into a beautiful young cow that has produced some outstanding calves for us. Her high lite to date would be a $12,000 bull that went to South Peace Colony a few years ago. This is a cow you honestly can’t find anything to change on her. We retained a full sister to “Zurteck” for our own herd this year, and she was easily one of the top heifers. “Gibb” comes from one of our old faithful producers. She is beginning to show her age, but what a great cow she’s been. “Gibb” is a lighter colored bull, that if anyone is looking for a bull to throw on some tan cows to get buckskin calves he should fit the bill, but will throw reds on red cows. Every year we see those buckskin steer calves gather good dollars, but the beauty of a bull like this is the daughters. They will have milk and lots of it. Simply the best of everything in one tidy package.

“Amazon” gets the nod as one of the feature bulls. A whole different pedigree here, and in a smooth polled package. His dam “Elexis” has certainly produced some outstanding cattle ion her time. Probably to date “Imax” would be her most famous son, but there is a big list. She is a cow that will moderate birth weight, and make a large majority of her calves polled, not sacrificing muscle or performance. We also have a full sister to “Amazon” and she is equally as good in the heifer pen. Not a lot of “Jungle” cattle in Canada, but I have certainly seen my share of them in Texas. The pedigree here is certainly right reading like a who’s who of the industry. Quite honestly if it wasn’t for the fact that we have owned two half-brothers to him in “Epic” & “Mojito” he wouldn’t be going anywhere, and be breeding cows here for many years. This is an outstanding herd bull prospect, with not a lot of guess work left to the imagination, as this is as proven of bloodlines as you will find. Her influence in the entire Simmental breed is huge. I’ve also stated that “Gjenna” the dam of “Morocco” is probably the best “Dorothy Jane” daughter produced. We only have a limited amount of “Orange River” semen, so it’s not something we use every day, only the elite will get a shot with it. The old fella never ceases to amaze us. Year after year he gets an entire group of heifers, and once again he added the sale topper into our female sale and his daughters averaged just shy of $10,000. I said to Karen one of these years we are going to sort him our absolute top cows to see what he can really do. Last year he was given one cow (it was Saphire our top donor) and he spanked out a $17,000 bull that went to Bar 5, and they later sold in the fall at their dispersal sale, where he was the second high seller for $20,000. He was also the grand sire of our high seller “Raptor” for $60,000. Not too shabby for an old guy. He has not only spoiled us with his calving ease, but his ability to sire top quality from heifers, and his stats are through the roof. Look to his sons for the combination of calving ease and growth, with a possibility of being polled, while producing some of the best females out there.

We have used the combination of “Epic & Barbossa” for calving ease, and “Detonate” is one of those very crosses. He will be like a bomb, as those heifers should just blow those calves right out sired by him. This guy is so much more to me than just a heifer bull though. Backed by a strong cow family in “Image 21J” , not only do you have cow power, but yet another shot of calving ease as well. There is little doubt in my mind commercially or purebred breeder wise, this will be a tough bull to pass by if you’re looking for bomb proof calving ease with a whole bunch more.

A very legit calving ease contender, once again the same combination of “Epic & Barbossa”, with another shot of low birth in “Viper”. A very smooth fronted calf that has a great shoulder set, and should be a bull you can confidently use on heifers. There is also no shortage of milk through this entire pedigree so certainly do not hesitate to retain daughters from this bull as well.

He is also from a cow family that is a consistent color producer (refer to Dominance lot #42 & Domingo lot #43)as well as making them polled. Also note with “Legend” in the background, just that much more assurance of built in calving ease. He also is the only Fleckvieh bull in this years sale with a good chance of being Homozygous Polled. For whatever reason, we are short on “Barbossa” sons, but what we lack in numbers, we’ve made up for in quality. “Cazadero” does have a bit more birthweight, but I am still quite sure he will be heifer friendly. I’m sure we are no different in the fact that when we get towards the home stretch of calving our birth weights always increase. Smaller pens, same feed, less exercise, I’m sure are all factors. Regardless we have a smooth polled bull here. Very smooth made, and was born unassisted from a first calver himself. Please note a little more performance here as well.

“Regent” is the result of an embryo raised by a first calving heifer. He is a bull that should also boast calving ease. His dam is our old “Desiree” cow who we kept in production until she was 18 years old. This cow had a natural ability to produce offspring with the most incredible temperaments, and it’s carried on for generations. For those of you who remember “Aztec”, his dam was a full sister to “Regent”. This is certainly not new genetics, but old and proven and will produce calving ease, growth and maternal traits all in one convenient package.

“King Louie” will lead our Purebred division this year. He has been a very well rounded bull for us, being able to utilize him everywhere, for his calving ease and his performance. Because our Purebred numbers are considerably smaller, a diverse bull like him is so important for our program. I really appreciate the fact that we can use him with confidence on heifers, but when we throw him on performance cows some birth weight does come through, and you can expect to wean a whopper. I figured his daughters would be good, but now that we have several in production, I am honestly blown away at just how good they are. Moderate framed, easy fleshing, modest birth weights, and great udders with lots of milk. His sons should breed true to himself.

The “King Louie x Wolfman” combination is a cross we have had a lot of success with. “King Triton” is an absolute beef machine. He is the type of bull that I appreciate that much more when I get the opportunity to sell a group of steer calves at the commercial market that are stamped just like him. Excess hair, big broad top, huge rib shape and capacity, great muscle pattern. It’s not all about those steers though, as he will sire a group of mouthwatering replacement heifers as well. “Kingsman” is a bull that will be very similar to his sire, in his ability to sire calves with great calving ease, yet still add performance. His dam comes from our top purebred cow family in “Painted Smile”, who entered our donor pen this past year. At age 14 she is not showing any signs of slowing down yet. We ran a bit behind on everything this fall with the weather, and excess rainfall & all the mud, so we didn’t get our homo polled testing done, however if I was a betting man I would say “Kingsman” would be one that would have tested. “Gulliver” comes from a steady producing cow. She produced a full brother in last year’s sale, selling to Bill Orlick. The dam of “Gulliver” has been a steady producer, as he will be the 10 calf in a row to make the sale pen. The birth weights are typically always on the heavier side, but she is just a cow that does it with ease. When you consider a 12 year old cow that looks as youthful as she does and puts one in the sale pen every year, she must be doing something right. This will be a great cow bull for someone looking for a little more performance.

Here is a big performance bull. His dam always does an excellent job for us, and for an older cow is extremely youthful looking. This has been a strong producing cow family for us, and we do have a few sisters to “Redmond” in our herd that are quite good. Use him on mature cows to raise those big scale smashing steers and you won’t be disappointed.

“Redford” is another bull with a strong Fleck influence from a top cow family. His dam produced one of our very best heifer calves last year, and is a female that will certainly provide that extra growth. “Redford” is a very long smooth made bull who has maintained right in the middle of the pack all along. He should sire an exceptional group of high performance carcass steers that will suit today’s needs.

“Titan” is a full brother to our second high selling purebred bull in last year’s sale, going to Parkhill ranches. This is a very strong topped bull, from a strong cow that has done an extremely good job for us. Lots of milk in this pedigree as well. His dam is a bigger framed cow, and I would guess “Titan” will excel on medium framed cows. We don’t have huge numbers of black bulls, but the three we have are certainly worthy.

“Olympus” is a long smooth made bull. His dam has been a no miss cow for us, who we have built a cow family around. This cow family has boasted producing some of our high selling purebreds over the past few years, including “Sonic” herd bull for Rivers Edge, and “Fortitude” who works for McCormick Family Ranch. “Olympus” is exceptionally long, and appears that he will produce high yielding carcass type cattle. With the shot of “Robin Hood” on the bottom, you know calving ease is built in as well as strong maternal characteristics. An all-around well rounded bull.

This is the only Black Baldie in this year’s sale, and he is quite good. Last year was the first year we used his sire, with very good success. Certainly a number of top quality cattle were exhibited sired by him this fall. We also found him to be very easy calving, so this year we used him on a number of heifers. This bull should also pass along those same great traits, and with “Stubby” on the back side of his pedigree, calving ease is virtually a certain. “Combustible” offers a little more style, chalked full of red meat, and with the money stripe on his face adds value to his progeny as well.
