Sale Welcome It is with great pleasure that we’d like to welcome you to our first annual Future Legends Simmental Bull Sale. This sale blends the breeding programs of Starwest Farms, Spruce View Acres, and B Bar C Simmentals all of whom strive to produce top performing Fullblood and Full Fleckvieh herdsire prospects. One of our key focus’ is rumen health. Developing our bulls on high quality forage, free choice mineral and a pail-fed ration brings out the true potential in a yearling, underlining his performance without sacrificing longevity. Starwest Farms was founded in 2007 in Chilliwack, BC, however my dad’s love for cattle began with him owning his first Fullblood Simmentals in the 1970s. In 2016, my husband and I took over and moved the farm to Calmar, Alberta, bringing the herd up to 90 head of registered Fullbloods, focusing mainly on Polled Full Fleckviehs. Three of our four herdsires are polled, including our newest addition being BLL Kalibre, who was the highest selling fullblood in Canada in 2019. His calves will surely be features in our 2021 lineup. We have previously sold in the Red Deer Simmental Bull Sale, as well as off-farm and are thankful for our devoted customer base. Our herd is a young one, with a majority of our bull sale offering being out of first calving heifers, and we feel their potential is endless. We also heavily focus on the temperaments of all our cattle as we not only want them to be easy to handle but have a toddler who will be running the farm before she turns five! Spruce View Acres have been raising Simmentals for the past 25 years with their main focus being on the Horned Fullbloods. Last year, Steve and Tracey bought their first Polled Fullblood herdsire and will look forward to incorporating polled genetics into their future progeny. They strive to raise calves with thickness, which is a trait that comes naturally from their predominantly horned cow herd. Consistency allows for a problem-free calving season which is another major focus as Steve owns a business off the farm, leaving the herdmanship solely up to Tracey. A nice, quiet disposition is always a pleasant feature to find when shopping for your next herdsire and Spruce View Acres is known for that. In the past, they have sold bulls off the farm, at the ASA sale, Bull Fest, and most recently at Jeans and Genetics, making them a strong asset to have in this sale. Chris grew up with Fullblood cattle, her family farm being Riverglen Simmentals. She bought her first heifer when she was 16. Brett brings great knowledge to their program as well, growing up on mixed grain and feedlot operation. So, when her dad sold out, Chris and Brett bought all the breds and replacements which kickstarted their herd. With their farm being a diversified grain operation as well, farming has become their sole livelihood. Luckily for them, the “next generation” has a keen eye and have already started building their own fullblood herds. They have sold bulls through the Jeans and Genetics sale and this is their largest sale offering to date. They are fortunate enough to have built a wonderful, loyal customer base over the years whether it being through sales or off the farm. They have been incorporating polled genetics in their program for the better part of ten years. Just about every female in their herd is polled or has a polled gene. Their cattle’s uniformity, thickness, and durability make them an absolute pleasure to do business with. With the Agriculture industry as a whole being a passion of ours for the past 20+ years, we warmly extend our invitation to share this day with us on February 19th in Lacombe, Alberta. We look forward to seeing our past, present and future buyers at the sale, as we couldn’t have done this without them. Visitors are always welcome to view the bulls prior to sale day and the coffee is always hot! Christel Humbke On behalf of the Future Legends Bull Sale Group

We had the opportunity to purchase Bar 5 Lady Siska 409M in partnership with Clearwater Simmentals a couple years back and were fortunate enough to get two beautiful herd sire prospects out of the flush. The muscle definition and bone mass on both of these bulls is tremendous. CKCW 500G is arguably one of the most powerful bulls we have ever raised. His pedigree is stacked with both traditional, foundation genetics along with contemporary, yet proven lineage. Just that alone makes CKCW 500G a pen standout not to mention his impressive performance. Co-Owned With: Clearwater Simmentals

One word comes to mind when I look at CKCW 538G and that’s consistency. His dam has been one of our top producing herd matrons since we purchased her nearly ten years ago. She has the capability of raising both donor-worthy females as well as memorable herdsires. CKCW 538G is the maternal brother to Starwest Bryck, our high selling bull at the Red Deer Simmental Sale in 2015, selling to the good people at Black Gold Simmentals. CKCW 538G is smoothly made with great capacity, making him easy on the eyes, especially with that haircoat. Our NGDB Loaded Gun calves have been one of the most consistent calf crops we’ve had. Because we only ever assisted one calf out of him, we felt confident using him on mature cows, as well as bred heifers. His progeny is attractive and easy doing but yet vigorous at birth, making his calves very much anticipated at calving season. CKCW 538G has the capability of being a unfailing herdsire, following in the footsteps of both his dam and sire.

After moving the farm from the BC Coast to Alberta, we decided to grow our herd numbers immensely and decided to buy some private packages of top females throughout the 2018 season. We were fortunate enough to purchase a group of bred heifers from Stefon Beechinor. Out of the 8 we acquired, 4 have bulls in this sale and 2 have females in the open heifer pen. To say they are living up to expectations is an understatement. The dam to CKCW 513G may not be the flashiest female in the herd but her maternal abilities and beautiful uniform udder make her one of our favourites. We are beyond eager to see her potential as we feel CKCW 513G is just the tip of the iceberg for her. Not to mention, Black Gold Elevation created quite the stir in the 2018 when he was purchased by Beechinor Bros and Wolfe Farms. His calves are colored right, built right, and bring performance to the table.

You may notice when looking at the pedigrees of our consignments that our females are quite young. In fact, a majority of our bull sale offering is out of first calvers. FGAF Magnum has made a tremendous impact on the Simmental industry with his females having some of the best udders on them and his sons commanding impressive sale averages over the years. We purchased two Magnum females from the 2018 Annual Beechinor Bros Bull Sale who are just beginning to show their potential, both of them having that picture perfect udder. CKCW 511G packs the perfect punch of both calving ease genetics along with performance, which leads me to believe that your investment will pay off in no time at all.

CKCW 518G is another striking consignment off of a first calving Beechinor female. We are once again impressed with the performance of these young females. Because we purchased them as bred heifers, we’ve had the opportunity to offer some unique genetics, including two JNR Titanium sons who are two of the best gaining bulls in the pen. They have consistently gained on average, 3.3lbs per day. CKCW 518G’s calves will pack on the pounds, bringing you a rewarding cheque come sale day.

CKCW 516G is our other JNR Titanium consignment. Both of them have a striking appearance and the length on them is remarkable. CKCW 516G’s dam is a larger framed female, with a nice hip and solid foot to her. She has an attractive appearance to her in both depth of body and color, making her a standout in the pasture. Both of the dams to CKCW 516G and CKCW 518G held great condition even after weaning off two of our heaviest bull calves. We feel confident that CKCW 516G not only will produce heavy steers in fall, but will also produce herd building females with desirable maternal traits.

Another program we were privileged enough to purchase a group of herd matrons from was our good friends at Anchor D. We have yet to have an Anchor D female that has performed sub-par. CKCW 544G is out of one of our favourite Anchor D females, not only because of her udder and bone structure but because of her quiet disposition, making her one of our daughter’s favourite cow. Anchor D Devra has a diamond- faced Double Bar D Spitfire bull calf on side her this year who we feel will again be a highlight in our 2021 lineup. CKCW 544G has the same docility as his dam, making him a pleasure to handle. He also is one who’s conformation is hard to fault. He’s colored well, with a beautiful haircoat and the consistency of the Blueprint calves never gets old.

Over the last three years since the farm has been in Alberta, we have really turned our focus on retention females. CKCW 526G’s is out of a bombproof cow family, making it a foundation lineage since the beginning. Virginia Ms Talissa is getting up there in age but has yet to miss a beat. She’s had a live, saleable calf every year and we’ve finally decided to be greedy and keep a couple of her females to ourselves. CKCW 526G’s dam is a moderate framed, clean fronted, deep ribbed homozygous polled female who we think will be our secret weapon. I would argue to say that besides CKCW 538G, CKCW 526G has the most proven cow family backing his pedigree. Crossroad Radium needs little introduction as he is one of the most proven calving ease fullblood bulls around.

CKCW 537G is our other Radium offering, again, out of a first calving heifer that we retained out of a top cow family. CKCW 537G’s dam is a maternal sibling to none other than Blueprint himself. She also has the memorable traits of a Spitfire daughter and we wouldn’t argue if we could have a whole herd of young females like her. Every year we end up having a pen favourite, whether it be due to their façade, or their quirky personality, and this year, CKCW 545G earned that title. His docility has been noted by nearly every person who has walked through the pen, including being moral support in the picture pen. His dam we purchased from Alliance Simmentals as an open heifer which makes this guy her first calf. This year, she has a beautiful polled Starwest Eagle Eye calf at side who already is quite impressive. As mentioned earlier, our NGDB Loaded Gun calves are undeviating and we feel CKCW 545G will be the perfect moderate framed heifer bull, with a more traditional Fleckvieh look to him.

CKCW 502G would be the perfect date for your heifer pen due to his smooth shoulders, smaller head, length, and uniformity. Starwest Divine, also nicknamed “Tippy” after her dam, is the farm sweetheart. When we utilized Double Bar D Rival in our herd, we were given very very few females, however we were fortunate enough to get a Rival female out of Eagle Ridge Tippy as her last calf, carrying on this powerful, large framed cow family. We feel CKCW 502G will raise vigorous, easy-coming calves who will decorate the4pastures in summer with distinctive presence.

I feel that the pedigree on this bull needs little to no explanation. CKCW 529G is so established in his lineage. You can ask Dan Skeels any day of the week, the influence FGAF French Attack has made on his program over the years; his females being truly to die for. ZDS 68A is a big, broody, dark liver red cow who commands presence and are the types of herd matrons we want backing our bull progeny.

Another golden beauty, carrying that more old-school coloring to him. We have always well-liked the Kananaskis cow family and have been pleased with all the progeny out of the flush we purchased. We’ve only managed to get one female, and somehow she worked her way over to Anchor D, where she’s earned the name Rapunzel. FGAF Guerrero became a hit in the industry due to his prominent appearance, and calving ease ability. We’ve utilized him on both first calvers, mature cows, and have a couple daughters in our herd. CKCW 534G will be an admirable contender for finest ladies.

CKCW 546G is a full brother to Starwest Pol Freezeframe 409F who sold to JS Simmentals at the Equation sale in 2018. Beech Bro Utopia became Starwest’s first donor cow and kick-started our great relationship with Stefon and John Beechinor when we bought her as their first sale offering. She also managed to completely steal my dad’s heart, who decided on flushing Utopia to both Spitfire and Rusty, resulting in some impressive progeny over the years. CKCW 546G will be the last calf out of this mating and although we are disappointed that Utopia still to this date has never given us a heifer, we have quickly learnt that she is a bull-making machine.

Elm Tree Ms Zdeno is one of the most recognizable cows on our farm mainly due to her sheer size. On her skinniest of days, she comes in at a mere 1890lbs. So when we decided to breed our largest dam to NGDB Loaded Gun, who is anything but small framed, we weren’t sure what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised with CKCW 543G. He was along, smooth, easy coming calf with a very unique color pattern to him, making him a bit of an eye-catcher. Ms Zdeno is another bull-making cow family, raising us some of our heaviest bulls in the past. CKCW 543G confidently has the ability to add some frame and length to your calf crop.

CKCW 541G might be the best definition of a Fulblood heifer bull. He has perfect shoulder structure with a smooth, slight head. Anchor D Dionne has the same dark red coloring to her with a perfect pearshaped figure, making her a worry-free cow at calving. She also has the “Raddison” look to her which has become a familiar one to the industry. CKCW 541G’s moderate frame and clean-front will produce attractive females and might have the possibility of adding a little extra chrome to brighten up your cow herd.

CKCW 548G will be our only purebred offering, and we feel he is a worthy one at that. CDY Red Signature has been a reliable producer, always raising solidly built calves. This was unfortunately her last calf after she suffered a hip injury, but we think CKCW 548G would make her proud. He is a wide topped, hairy brick who carries a more rugged look to him. CKCW 548G’s materal sister, who sold in the 2019 Simpower sale to Stout Brothers carried very comparable traits to her. CDY Red Signature was larger framed and was the type of cow we structured our red and black program around. CKCW 548G will bring out the highest amount potential from the heart of your herd.

Usually at this time of year when I’m busy calving and I have to write footnotes for the sale, I feel like I’m back in school doing homework and can’t wait for it to be done. This year is different, and one of the reasons is because of my excitement of “The Warden”. This bull has exceeded my expectations in every way. This long, soggy, Chandler son is a definite herd bull in the making. Chandler has three sons in the sale and all three bulls are typical of his offspring. Wardens’ mother Lizzy is another one of my favourite cows for many reasons but one of the reasons is her offspring put the pounds on quickly and without pampering. Warden stands out in the pen and is pointed out by anyone, even if they aren’t familiar with cattle. Lizzy is 14 years old this year and still has a perfect udder. This could be one of her last calves that she has and when you can produce quality like this at her age and pass it on shows she is something special. Read the footnotes on her grandson “Duke 713G” in the sale and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Jury Duty is a bull I have kept my eye on all year. From the moment he was born I knew he would be going to the sale this year and he hasn’t disappointed. His mother has been one of my most predictable, and favorite cows on the place. It doesn’t matter who she is bred to or whether it’s a bull or heifer, I know they will be good. At a young age he already had that herd bull look and I am confident he will go on and do wonders for his new owner. I was hoping for a heifer this year from his dam, but she decided to give me a set of twin bulls. Regardless, if you are looking to add performance, and increase your weaning weights quickly in one season to your cow herd, this could be the bull for you. A favourite of anyone who walks in the pen.

With a name like Lotto 649, how can you overlook this fella? Seriously though, this is another typical Chandler son. Long, deep bodied with that herd bull look. We have used Chandler on pretty, well every cow on the farm at one time or another and he has calved well on everything from second calvers to cows. Lotto is dark red with one large goggle and his mother is one of the friendliest cows on the place.

Due South is another bull I have had my eye on all summer. A moderate framed United son with a thick butt. I think heifers out of this bull will be headed to the replacement pen and his steers will bring top dollar. Due South’s dam Billy Jean had a daughter sell to Lockhart Valley Simmentals this fall and they are very happy with her. Billy Jean has another United bull calf at side this year. If it works, why change??

Well, the verdict is in and this is a good bull. These United sons are like peas in a pod. You could pick every one of them out in the pen. His mother, Heather, has a beautiful udder that would rival any top dairy cow. Looking for docility to add to the mix with good gains at weaning and yearling and you don’t have to look any farther. Told you. The verdict is in.

This past summer was probably the worst year we ever experienced with foot rot. Between all the rain and the cows having to constantly cross a creek, I would go out on a limb and say that I think we treated every bull on pasture this year and some of them twice. Surrender happened to be one of the bulls who we had to treat twice and one time his mother had it at the same time. I feel no doubt that it had an impact on his weaning weight. Regardless, he bounced back with no issues and I think will go on and be a good breeding bull.

This bull comes from one of the hardest working cows on the farm. Miranda has always been a consistent producer for us and has raised some of the thickest calves here. With Miranda getting up in age and the horrible February we had last year really took a toll on her. We nearly lost her from the cold and it has taken most of the year for her to recuperate so this bull isn’t as big on the weaning and yearling side like he would have been. Regardless, he is keeping pace and is putting the pounds in the right places. You would never guess he had a rough start. Miranda had a high selling heifer in our last years sale going to Mark Land and Corp. and the only other heifer from her calved about 3 weeks ago and is following in her mothers’ footsteps and I’m sure is going to be a great cow in the future. Les Hildebrandt has a son of Miranda and he is very happy with him.

Little Vegas may not be the biggest bull in the pen this year but I think he’s got a lot of potential. His mother Reno has had numerous bulls in our sales and she has never disappointed. The only heifer I ever got out of her is in the pen right now and she is one stout heifer. Little Vegas may not have all the jazz of a couple of the other bulls, but he has what it take to get the job done.

Here are one of the reasons I was a little more excited about writing footnotes this year. This future herd sire impressed me at 2 weeks of age with him showing good muscle expression and he hasn’t stopped. If you notice his birth date, he is just about 2 months younger than some of the other bulls and has surpassed some of them already. On grass he had a WPDA of over 4lbs on just grass and mama. His yearling shows a WPDA of just under 4lbs and an adjusted yearling of 1414lbs. If EPD’S are important he is in the top 1% for maternal weaning and top2% for milk. This isn’t the first calf his mother, Cherry Blossom has done this to. The last couple of years she has been one of the last to calve but her calves have been some of the heaviest if not the heaviest at weaning. She had a high selling bred heifer last year going to Virginia Ranch and if you notice the footnotes to our Lot 20 bull “Warden 645F” his grandmother raised that beast. Predictability at it’s best. As a bonus, this is one of the most docile cow families in the herd, so don’t be surprised if he comes for a scratch.

Here’s a young bull that I think has more potential than his picture shows. His mother was only a second calver competing with 10 older, mature cows and as a calf he was one of my favourites. I really believe if given the chance he will mature into a powerful bull like the Charles sons like to do. The Prince Charles daughters are the first ones picked in our replacement pen by everyone. They are some of the best we have ever had. Very showy and colored dark from head to toe so if you like them colored this way, there are tonnes of black cherry coloring on both sides of the pedigree in Joyride. I would like to see him on some black cows. His mother I really believe is going to give us a showstopper one day and I don’t think I will have to wait long for it.

If you are all about disposition, Gage is your guy. He has always come up for a scratch since he was a baby calf. His dam is a big volume, heavily pigmented cow. Note Gage is smooth polled and a light 81lbs birthweight.

Genesis is my favorite in the pen. He checks all the boxes; hair, color, testicle, topline, feet, smooth polled and disposition. Hes missing a bit of pigment but his pedigree is loaded. He had a full brother go to Cottrells at Sundre and another was a feature bull at the Jean’s and Genetics Sale 2019 going to Erskine Farming.

You will notice Duke and Open Range in Garnets pedigree. Both were used in our heifer pen. Open range left us with growth, well built heifers. Duke, a dark, solid red diamond head has given us a shot of calving ease and polled genes. Garnet is marked much like his sire and is smooth polled. He is out of a beautiful, well uddered 1st calver.
