Doll Charolais and Simmental Family Dear friends and livestock producers,

it’s always fun and keeps Pam and I young.

Our oldest Joey and our youngest Ty are on the place working full time. This will be Matthias’s seventh full year with us, and Joey’s third. They both enjoy having the opportunity to work with their uncles and dad.

Wesley thinks he has found his calling as a lineman and is currently working for MDU in Bismarck. The older of the twins, Casey, is working at Bullinger Tree Service as a foreman. He has been with them for ten years and has been confused for a monkey in many parts of Bismarck/Mandan. We’re blessed that everyone is in good health and spirits. In addition to a busy year our family celebrated two huge milestones, two weeks apart, Casey married Bobbi on September 30th were married at Spirit of Life and Ty married Blaisey on October 14th on the farm in our calving barn.

As always we have been trying to acquire the best genetics we can. As you all know that can yield great results and equally great disasters. We have made many investments to improve our herd and calf crop to bring a better animal to our sale. We believe in only raising top quality for customers. Our main goals are to find and produce genetics with calving ease, performance and carcass traits.

This year we will be selling a set of 100 powerful Charolais bulls, which are sure to put dollars into any calf crop.

The Simmentals are no slouch either as they can stand up to most any cross you want. They also carry strong maternal traits. We often get asked which breed has the best gain and weaning weight. In the thirty plus years we’ve had both breeds the Simmentals seem to wean a little heavier, but the final weights see the Charolais overtaking them. The sixty-five head of Simmentals in the sale this year are about 40/60 black/red.

The bulls have been fed a TMR ration consisting of grain, corn silage, mixed chopped hay and distillers. We would like to thank J & L Nutritional Consulting from Perham, Minnesota for all his help with the rations. He will be at the sale and be will available to answer questions, as will Harlan, David, and myself.

The The cattle will be at the ranch until the Friday before the sale.

Doll's Anyone is welcome to stop in and walk through them. The ranch is located west of Mandan on I-94 go to exit 136 then travel 2 miles north and one west.

It is our hope that each of you are doing well and having a good start to 2018.

Our year started okay, but as the days passed it just got drier and drier.

The crops were average to nothing. We made wheat in to hay and barley into hay to get enough feed. The pastures were half there so we decided to sell some cow calf pairs in mid June. By the end of July, we were starting to consider supplementing the cows on pasture. Then we were blessed with six inches of rain in the beginning of August. Everything changed overnight.

We were fortunuate to put up four bales an acre of millet hay. We cut our first cutting of alfalfa in September and got almost two bales an acre on that. We chopped an average size silage pile so we have plenty of feed to get the cows to pasture this spring.

Harlan and Jodie have two girls, Hailie is currently a first semester senior at NDSU Standford School of Nursing. She will graduate in December 2018 with a Bachelor in Science of Nursing. Jacie is a freshman at Bismarck State College and majoring in elementary education. Her plan for next fall is to transfer to South Dakota State. She is very excited for this and loving the college life.

David and Donna’s oldest, Katie, is currently working towards her bachelor’s degree through Dickinson State University’s online program. She recently moved back home from Fargo, and is loving being closer with her family. Krysten, the youngest, is finishing up her Associates Degree at Bismarck State College. She is loving her new job as an instructional aide in a Bismarck elementary school. David and Donna have adjusted well to the empty nest life, but definitely love when both girls are home.

My wife Pam and I miss attending the sporting events for our children, now that they are all out of school. However our oldest is living with us, so the three grandchildren keep us busy. We love having Angela, Braxton (6), Truett (5), and Austyn (3) living with us. Some days it can be challenging but

All animals are guaranteed breeders. If any animal fails to breed after a trial of six months, it may be returned to the seller if in good condition and have gained 1 pound per day while in possession of the buyer and in compliance with North Dakota health regulations.

The seller reserves the right to try said animal for six months, ad if it proves a breeder, return it to the buyer at the buyer’s expense. If the animal proves to be a non-breeder, an animal of comparable rank will be substituted. All bred heifers will be pregnancy checked and results of that check announced at sale time. Females selling safe in calf are considered breeders without further guarantee.

The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) utilizes economic and management descriptions of your ranching operation, along with EPD on available Charolais bulls to assist in identifying the most profitable sires for your unique operation. Using economic selection index theory, this tool will generate dollar indexes per terminal progeny produced on bulls in the AICA database, ranking them for profit potential given the inputs you provide. The dollar indexes are to be interpreted much like single trait EPD. For example, if sire A’s index is $191.66 and sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return ($200.00 $191.66) than sire A’s offspring.

Sire Listing Criteria

For bulls to have a Terminal Sire Index they must be registered with the American-International Charolais Association. Each bull must also have an EPD for BWT, WWT, YWT, MAT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT.

Progeny Proven Sires

Must have sired at least 3 calves with performance data reported to AICA within the last two years and an accuracy value of .30 or higher.

Terminal Sire Index (TSI)

The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) - BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT - into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data.

Dams of Distinction The AICA's dam of distinction Program recognizes dams that have consistently weaned calves with above average weaning weights and have been regular producers with 380 days or less calving intervals. Since 2009 in the Doll herd.
