why?
top 5 reasons to utilize BOHRSON MARKETING SERVICES with assisting you in sourcing your next females
1 INTEGRITY - Our order buying services have been built on integrity and always doing what is best for the customer. We always represent our customers in a professional and confidential manner when sourcing their next herd bull or female. Our customers’ best interest comes absolutely first and we pride ourselves on the many repeat customers that annually utilize our order buying services with confidence.
2 KNOWLEDGE - When the staff at BMS share the same strong passion for the livestock industry,
the knowledge for quality livestock starts at a young age. From learning from parents and other mentors to competing in 4-H along with broadening education in post-secondary agriculture college; this has all added knowledge to our team in order to source cattle for the most astute cattleman. Foot quality, structural soundness and udder strength through maternal genetics are all musts when we select new genetics for our customers and that never goes overlooked.
3 TIME-SAVING - We know that cattlemen are very busy and can’t attend every event. With our
staff attending 57 sales from the most progressive breeders, feel free to utilize our knowledge to source genetics to enhance your program within your budget. From purchasing on sale day to the breeders delivering the animal in a timely fashion, we will ensure a positive experience from start to finish.
4 FREE - One of the largest misconceptions with our order buying services is that we charge
customers to purchase cattle for them, this is not the case. We professionally represent our customers at these sales and we are not paid buyer’s commissions so in no circumstance are we tempted to sell an animal that isn’t what our customer is wanting. We will remain patient to find an animal that is right for the customer’s needs and within their budget at one of the many sales we work throughout the fall.
5 FOLLOW-UP - Our service doesn’t just end on sale day after buying a customer their next
bull(s) or female(s). We assist with lining up insurance on your new purchase(s) plus continue to communicate with the seller after the sale to ensure proper delivery in a timely fashion. We work hard to get to know the cattleman and their program whom we purchase livestock for. In many situations, we will also assist in helping them grow their program and market progeny from their purchases in to the future.

2022 ALTA GENETICS SCHOLARSHIP TOP 4 FINALIST
$10,000 - FIRST PLACE
OLIVIA WOYTIUK Shell Lake, Saskatchewan My name is Olivia Woytiuk and I am currently a sophomore at Otero College in La Junta, Colorado. I will finish my animal science-nutrition degree at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. I have had a long lasting love for agriculture and am excited to earn a degree and start a career in this industry. The Significance Of A Role Model Cancer. My dad has cancer. It’s such an ugly word. It almost burns my mouth to say it. My ears ring and my body quivers every time I listen to someone say “cancer”. You never think this kind of thing will happen to your family when your dad is just forty-four years old, but here we are. My dad was diagnosed with cancer on August 23, 2020, and he has never looked the same. Cancer can change people in many ways but it didn’t change who my dad is. He is still the same hard-working, funny guy we all knew before. You have no idea of the punch cancer has until one of the people you love most has it attached to them. It’s like you got the wind knocked out of you and you can never catch your breath no matter how hard you try. Cancer is something that can make or break a person, but my dad lives to tell his story of being a resilient cancer survivor during a global pandemic while running an entire family farm operation. After my dad’s intense journey with cancer, we learned what the true meaning of “family farm” really was. I admire my dad for his morals, work ethic, outlook on life and true passion. For the purpose of this essay, I chose to talk about someone who inspires me to be the best version of myself every day. He’s taught me that good things come to the people who work for it, not wait for it. His work ethic, integrity, selflessness and independence is unmatched by anyone else I’ve ever known. Through a historic battle with cancer and a miracle recovery, he has shown me these four important traits throughout the hardest of times. The passion he exhibits for agriculture has inspired my life, my post-secondary education and my future career path. I have been blessed in this lifetime to call one of my biggest role models, Dad. My grandparents founded my family farm, Crossroad Farms, in 1974. My dad, Jody Woytiuk, was born in 1976 and from a young age, he learned what hard work, integrity, selflessness, and independence were. My grandparents were 19 and 21 years old when my dad was born. At age 10 my dad started doing chores full-time before and after school. His love for farming and cows came at a very young age. My dad was the only child in his family that was able to work and my grandma had to be looking after my Uncle Corey for the majority of the time. My dad’s brother was born in 1974 and at 5 years old was diagnosed with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, including idiopathic seizures and intellectual disability. This left my grandpa and my dad to run the farm. When I would pack silage for days on end my dad always told me, “There’s no reason to complain. I used to do this when I was 8 years old and couldn’t reach the clutch.” To this day, on my longest work days what keeps me going is imagining my dad doing whatever I’m doing but at ten years old. Hearing the stories of his childhood alone have made me work harder and be intrinsically motivated with everything I do. No matter what point of his life we want to talk about farming was always a major part of it. He carried that sense of being independent and having a strong work ethic to my siblings and I. He has raised me to be a very strong-willed and independent woman. The only person who is going to make me successful is me, so if you’re going to do something- do it right. My dad attended school in Shell Lake from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Growing up, he loved cross country. He started running in junior high and was very successful in the 1500m and 3k. He won many provincial titles and placed at nationals in the 1500m and cross country. My dad passed his love for sports and all the work it takes, to me. Learning from my parents and hearing about their successes made me want to be successful in my athletics. I was given every opportunity by my parents at a young age to be able to be where I’m at now. If they needed to drive me three hours round trip for practice, they would. They have taken me across North America to compete at the highest level of fastpitch I could reach. They sacrificed a lot just so that I could be successful in doing something that I loved. They gave me every single opportunity in my life for me to be who I am today. Sports wise I was allowed to play any single sport I wanted as long as I put in the effort to be the best I could be. He taught me that if a great opportunity arose then I need to take it and follow my passion as far as I can. We never know when that chance will come again. The only exception was that I had to put in the full work. For four years I had been trying out for Team Saskatchewan to play in Canada Summer Games this past summer in Niagara falls. In year three of tryouts, before they made the final cuts I was very unsure if I wanted to keep trying out. It was taking up a lot of my time and Covid-19 hit so everyone was unsure if the event would even happen. My dad encouraged me since day one to stick with this team. I ended up making Team SK and traveling to Niagara falls to represent Saskatchewan in softball. It was hands down the best softball experience of my life and without that little bit of encouragement I’m really not sure if I would have stuck with it. My dad graduated high school in 1994 and went to the University of Saskatchewan the following fall to study agriculture. After a year of post-secondary and some wise words from his economics teacher that he was “dumb as a monkey” after scoring a 23% on a multiple-choice exam, he realized that university was not for him. The next fall he decided to attend Saskatchewan Polytechnic to earn a journeyman certificate. He worked all over Saskatchewan in mines. Most weeks he worked seven days a week, twelve hours a day. Whenever he did have a stint of days off, he came home and helped on the farm. After our neighbor passed away, he decided it was time to move home and farm after seven years of working an off-farm job. My dad had to work like he did to be able to buy land and cattle to come back and farm with my grandparents. I think the seven years that he was away from the farm working so hard made him very thankful to experience life off the farm. My dad always preached to me about getting an education and experiencing things off the farm. I was always told that just staying on the farm was never an option. I had to get an education and experience the world; it didn’t matter if it was just a one-year certificate or a Master’s degree. I don’t think he anticipated I’d move twenty-two hours away to another country to do everything he preached but here we are. When he worked away for seven years it made him work harder for the life he once had and wanted back on the farm. Being away at college for more than four months at a time has proven my dad right with everything he has said. I’ve learned so much about agriculture, myself and life in general. Having a completely different life off the farm makes me appreciate the life I once had on the farm. My dad married my mom on July 6, 2002. I was born in 2003 and now have three younger siblings. We started our annual bull sale in 2006 and had it right on the farm since the beginning. My dad made all the bleachers and sale ring that we still use today. From a young age, we were always on the farm. My dad always took us to work, and he found work for us when we asked for it. My love for farming and agriculture came from my dad. He pushed me to be very involved in every aspect of our bull sale. I always had to help blow, clip, picture and video the bulls during the few months leading up to the sale. These past few years I have also done write-ups for
page 132
the bulls that are put in the catalog. During the sale, I was up on the block next to him writing down bidder numbers, who bought the bull, and the amount it was sold for. When the sale concludes I give him the average and the total gross. When I turned sixteen he let me deliver bulls by myself to our customers. Living twenty-two hours away from home I am unable to be home for this special day. This is the one day of the year I get extremely homesick. Not only did he involve me in the bull sale but he always let me try things when I asked and sometimes, I even got to try new things with no instructions, so I really got to do things the way I wanted. He would let me finish doing a job and then show me the easier/simpler way to do it next time. One of the best ways I had to interpret what he wanted from me was the daily hand signals I got from him in the tractor cab. To this day I am left wondering what he could possibly mean when his hands are in a circular shape moving side to side. Sometimes I didn’t have a choice if I wanted to come to the farm or not, I was coming. Not many children can say they pulled CIDRs out of cows or helped pull a calf at age ten but I can say I did. Seeing the embryo process done year after year sparked my love and interest in bovine reproduction. Tagging along with my dad whenever I could gave me the love that I have today for cattle. I look forward to going to work every day and doing tasks by myself. I find it rewarding to go out and process newborn calves or bring a new life into this world. My dad always made sure I was involved in the farm and made me find my true passion in life. My dad’s true passion in life is farming, and he will be farming until the day he dies.Sometimes when we meet people within ten minutes of talking to them we can tell their passion in life; my dad is one of these people. He talks like a farmer, acts like a farmer and dresses like a farmer. What’s the best conversation topic for him anywhere he goes with any type of crowd? Farming. Most of his tee shirts consist of sayings like, “I’d rather be farming” or “talk farming to me.” In order for my dad to receive chemo treatments they put a PICC line in his left arm. He would still AI cattle with his PICC line in his arm for weeks because he is the only one on the farm who can do it and he wanted to prove to himself that he still could. I have never been so thankful that my dad involved me on the farm from a young age because this is where my independence started and continues to grow the most. When his health started to decline, I had to pick up extra work on the farm. I grew very independent since I had a lot of responsibilities and had to make decisions best suited for the farm. Before making a decision I would base it on “what would my dad do” or “how would my dad do this.”. I didn’t need instructions on every single thing because my dad made sure I could work and I knew what it took to be a farm hand. He shared his passion with me since I was very young and in the end, it paid off for me, for him and for the farm. Being a farmer, we never know what the day may hold. The devotion my dad has for farming can be seen throughout everything he does. He has inspired my life, my post- secondary education and my future career path. Farming is what made my dad who he is today. Everything he has ever worked towards has been for the farm and our family. In the worst states of his health, the farm and family have come before him. August 23, 2020, is a date that will forever be engraved in my head. At just seventeen years old my life and my family’s lives were turned upside down. This is the day that my dad was diagnosed with stage 3 stomach cancer. I am the oldest of four children. At this time, I was seventeen, and my youngest sibling was eleven. My mom told us to sit on the couch in the living room that day and she said, “Dad has cancer.” If we want to talk about words that will knock the wind out of us, there they are. We had no idea what the next steps were or how bad it really was. The only thing my mom said was that we were going to get through it and dad is going to fight with everything he has in him. My dad was a strong, healthy, 44-year-old man. Once his diagnosis was clear and he understood that things didn’t look good, he went straight to business mode. He got harvest done between chemo treatments and prepared the farm the best he could before he had to be absent for an unknown period of time. He started chemo on my eighteenth birthday, October 8, 2020. Before his surgery, he did four rounds of chemo over eight weeks. On January 4, 2021, he had the surgery that was supposed to save his life. His heart stopped on the table and he flatlined for two minutes. They closed him up and cleared him again for surgery on January 8, 2021. He then had another four rounds of chemo over eight weeks after his surgery. It was a huge eye-opener for me and ever since August 23, 2020, I live my life differently. In April of 2021, my family got the news from the oncologist that my dad was officially cancer free. I am more thankful for him now than I ever have been. I listen to him a little more, watch him a little closer and inherit his lifestyle and passion a little more every day. Throughout his battle with cancer, my dad was the most selfless person I knew. The farm and our family always came first. My most important traits (work ethic, integrity, selflessness and independence) I have learned through him, but he magnified these traits while he was battling cancer. If he can exhibit these traits while battling cancer, then I can most certainly show them on any given day. When I leave this world, I want to be known for my work ethic, integrity, selflessness and independence. I want to be recognized not for how important I was in this world but for how much of a positive difference I made in other people’s lives. Picking a role model like my father has brought every single one of those aspects into my life. He set the example for me from a very young age of carrying those characteristics and I have worked nineteen years of my life towards the goal of exhibiting those traits to everyone I meet. My dad said his job is to raise me to be a hard-working woman and to be another great role model for not only my generation and the next but also for everyone I surround myself with. Agriculture is a very important piece of my life and I want to inspire people just as much as my dad did me. He’s taught me that the only person who is going to make me successful, is me. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. My dad sparked the love I have for the agriculture industry, and I hope to take over and grow my dad’s legacy of Crossroad Farms one day. He worked so hard to grow it into the successful business that it is today, and I would love to be the one to keep it growing onward and upward. I know that by exhibiting the traits my dad has shown me every day and him raising me to uphold them. “I will be” the woman who worked her tail off to be successful through my own work ethic, integrity, selflessness and independence. “I will be” the woman who made a positive impact on many other people’s lives. “I will be” someone my dad is proud to call his daughter. “I will be” constantly striving to be one of my dad’s biggest role models in life, teaching him as much as he has taught me.

2022 ALTA GENETICS SCHOLARSHIP TOP 4 FINALIST
$7,500 - SECOND PLACE
CADE CRUICKSHANKS Brandon, Manitoba Hello, I am Cade Cruickshanks a 4th year Co-op accounting student at the University of Manitoba, in addition to school I am building my own seedstock Simmental herd Broken C Simmentals. I am pleased to have recently signed a permanent job offer with MNP for fall of 2023 and will continue my studies to pursue my CPA designation. Outside of school I remain active in 4-H as a member and Youth Director on the Manitoba 4-H Council, Manitoba Youth Simmental Association member and serve as an executive member of our local Brandon Hills Community Club. More Than A Grandpa The Oxford dictionary defines success as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”, what is excluded in this is the true beauty of the accomplishment is the “how”. Success holds a degree of ambiguity as there are no set terms or benchmarks to reaching the achievement as it is an interpretive evaluation of the task or purpose. Viewing it as customizable due to the varying approaches, obstacles, experiences, and most importantly, the people who assisted you are what leaves no two success stories the same. This “how” is where I would like to explore, that the people involved in the journey are paramount to the acknowledgement of success. When presented with the question: “Who is your role model?” a couple of people come to mind, but I kept circling back to one individual. David Lischka is a man far more than just a grandpa. A role model and most certainly has been a contributor if not the largest contributor in shaping the individual I am today. While in his later years he was able to fulfill his duties as a grandfather to 7 grandchildren, a calling he embraced fully as many viewed David as a man born to be a grandpa. Tragically our family lost David in June of 2021, the centrepiece of our family however that does not mean that his impact stopped there as his mentorship and relationships were engrained in us all. After growing up on a small beef cattle operation outside of Brandon, Manitoba, I quickly realized my passion for the Agriculture and Food Industry. Through my involvement in youth organizations like 4-H Manitoba, I have been provided numerous opportunities to explore the vast career opportunities within my reach. Now, a passionate Asper School of Business Co- op student while majoring in accounting, with intentions of pursuing my CPA designation following the completion of my undergraduate degree. With career aspirations of blending an education in accounting into the agriculture and food industries in Western Canada, to help ensure the continued advancement and support for the industry I love. This love for agriculture has strong roots within my family, as both sides come from beef cattle operations. Including my grandfather where he and his wife Beverly worked to build a successful cow-calf and feeder cattle operation in Deloraine, Manitoba in the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s. Both progressive cattle producers were awarded the Outstanding Commercial Beef Producers Award, nominated for the Outstanding Young Farmers Award, and featured in the Cattlemen’s magazine for their beef management. After selling the herd in 1992, David began to sell beef and dairy genetics throughout southern Manitoba. Where David thrived in this new career, as a people person at heart, customers became friends, and visits to farms were valued. I would hear stories about his semen sales days, specifically his booth at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair was never without someone sitting down and having a visit. This passion for agriculture was the foundation for our relationship to flourish. From a young age, cattle and farming were a quick love for me allowing my grandfather to sprinkle some wisdom along the way as he watched me grow a passion for something he also shared. As I grew older, the bond over cattle only strengthened as I began to acquire some select purebred Simmental females to build up my herd for myself. I was always picking his brain on cattle and old genetics. He is a household name amongst many breeders I have toured and visited with regularly, as he taught many of the breeders in the area today how to artificially inseminate through one of his many courses. While it wasn’t only till recently that I took an interest in seedstock breeding, his teaching of artificial insemination was something that we had hoped to share unfortunately that was cut short. I now have taken the course and still view that as something we shared closely, as I still wear his name tag on my overalls. His guidance and leadership went far beyond cattle and agriculture, yet equally as valuable. His actions helped mold me into the individual I am today, helping build character, my drive, and showing a set of fundamental values to live by. Without the leadership of my grandfather, I would not be the aspiring young leader I am today and may not have experienced the success I have. Recognizing the impacts he made on all aspects of my life has inspired me to work hard to build the best life I can for myself. As a man coming from his generation, it was often an “if it was broken, then fix it” mentality which I viewed as admirable. This determination and ability to never view a task too daunting was something I could see as an invaluable skill when it comes to achieving success in any facet of life. This also paired well with the thought that you are never done learning in life, and that any new task is simply a learning opportunity. That mentality has transcended me, as it has now become a tool in my set that has allowed me to become an adaptive and advancing individual. Now, an outspoken individual willing to adapt myself to complete any tasks for personal and professional growth. The determination that I acquired from my grandfather has allowed me to increase the higher and increasingly challenging goals. These universally valuable skills have allowed me to graduate high school with honours, and move on to a top business school in Canada at the Asper School of Business. While overcoming numerous academic challenges related to COVID-19 I have been fortunate enough to achieve three consecutive semesters to be named to the Dean’s Honour List. A feat that I am proud of, as it is a testament to the hard work and dedication to my studies as I enter my fourth and final year of my Bachelor’s degree. While determination is a critical characteristic of moving through education, it is undoubtedly a key to any successful person. Having the ability and skillset to bring transferable skills like a strong work ethic and determination to the workplace, boards, or committees or within your personal life will bring immense value to you. Determination is the starting point for something much larger, all it takes is drive. That drive to become achieve greatness, to reach new heights, and constantly push the curve outward when it comes to your success. Something I have emphasized while self-reflecting, identifying what is valuable and worthwhile to me, to then working hard to achieve those accomplishments. When I recall my grandfather and his work in any area of life, one thing repeatedly rises to the top is self-ownership. A man that held his head high, worked hard for things that he believed in, and was extremely prideful of his accomplishments. For most this can hold challenges as individuals can lose the humility that makes being prideful less respectable in the minds of others. His ability to take ownership of his mistakes or flaws create a shelf that his work can be admired by others. That very skill of taking ownership of the
page 134
good and the inevitable bad brings a certain level of class and prestige to the quality of the man he was. Furthermore, something that took time to develop and is something that I have yet to master as I believe it takes a lifetime to fully grasp. As I have grown my grandfather was always there to guide me and shape me into who I am, doing whatever he needed to do, including pushing me or bringing me back to reality. The drive that I developed during my adolescent years began to shine and separate me from my peers, in school I was repeatedly at the top of my class and outside the classroom, developing into a young leader for the future through 4-H and sports. The drive also translated to the work setting as before I could drive, I began a lawn care business in town and for the local community centre to fill my summers and fill my early interest in business. My grandfather never discouraged the idea to put some young men to work, with his help in providing a reliable means of transportation for me to spend some labour hours in the sun. Resulting in a profitable business on my part, perhaps less profitable for my grandfather, however, those hours and dollars spent in his mind were an excellent investment and one that I thank him for today. Without a mentor, guide, and most importantly grandfather like I did I would certainly not have developed into the man I am today and surely would not experience the successes I have in my young life. Someone who pushed me to grow a strong work ethic, with ample determination and perseverance adding to being someone that hasn’t shied away from hard work. Additionally, now someone that has discovered the areas that I am passionate about like agriculture, cattle, and 4-H. Helping to develop a strong set of values of family and ownership and providing a high level of quality in anything I do, acting as a guide to keeping straight to my roots. Finally, and most importantly someone willing to let me fail and learn from my mistakes but was never afraid to share his wisdom and guidance through life. As I look forward and reflect upon the successes I have achieved and can be proud of, it is a way of me acknowledging the successes and a driving factor to keep growing as he did. As I have grown and matured, I have recognized several communities I am involved with that are very close to my heart. The first is a love for the 4-H program, its values, and the benefits it provides to youth across our country and the world. Actively in my 15th year of 4-H, I have been fortunate to be given numerous travel opportunities: Regina (Exploring Careers in Agriculture), Toronto (National Members Forum), Ottawa (Canadian Citizenship Congress) in which I was unable to attend due to COVID-19, and offered to attend the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana but was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. All of these opportunities can be attributed to my commitment to advancing myself, all having a limited number of spots, and attending any event is a rewarding feat. As I have advanced throughout 4-H I have also held numerous positions including the former President of one of the select adult member clubs within Canada. As my time as a member has begun to wind down as I am in my final year, my involvement has not finished as I was recently named a Youth Director of 4-H Manitoba. Sitting on the board is something that I am very honoured to be involved in as I bring new ideas into leading the 4-H program in Manitoba as a young leader in this space. Outside of 4-H, I have involved myself in several other communities that I enjoy giving my time including the Brandon Hills Community, and the Manitoba Youth Simmental Association. In our community, I was recently voted on as the Vice-president of the Brandon Hills Community Board, and act as the youngest sitting executive on the board. I am passionate about my community and want to continue to ensure the sense of community continues as it passes through the generations. Additionally, I am an active member of the Manitoba Youth Simmental Association, a collection of young breeders throughout our province. As an older member I have taken on a leadership role in helping some of the younger members feel involved in the operations and currently sit on several fundraising committees in the association. When looking forward to my future career that is a story that remains to be written, but that does not mean the aspirations I hold are unclear. My efforts to develop a strong and diverse skillset that was no mistake as it is I have been something that I worked to develop over the years. Doing so has allowed me to build relationships, and connections and grow further opportunities for myself that will ultimately contribute to the desired success I hope to achieve. I am seeking to pursue a career and grow a career in the agriculture industry both on the business side of the industry and growing my seedstock Simmental herd Broken C Simmentals to lead the beef industry in Canada into the future. Following the completion of my Bachelor of Commerce degree, I will continue to further my education as I look to further my education and accreditation by pursuing my CPA designation. A challenge that will test my skills and provide some obstacles that I must overcome, but this will only strengthen my abilities and skillset for the future. I plan to use this CPA designation to build a respected name for myself that is viewed by many in the same way I view my grandfather: a man of integrity, quality, and humility. This reputation I seek will come with the successes and achievements I will seek to accomplish in this industry. I will work diligently to assist agriculture stakeholders to build plans and models to maintain longevity and sound succession between generations. As the agriculture industry will continue to experience pressures from the everchanging societal views, as a young leader I will work to maintain the security of our industry. Success is not born from one individual, but rather a compiled group of individuals and teachings that allow an individual to overcome challenges and build a chain of successes. However, with that there is undeniably one individual, my grandfather, that had led the pack when it came to molding me into the young man I am that stands today. The opportunity to observe how he built a life for himself and his family all while working in the industry he loved is unquestionably inspirational. In a way where his actions encouraged me to not settle for anything below the bar, I have set for myself. Inspire me to continuously abide by the values I have developed, to hold family in the highest regard, work hard, take ownership, have a strong drive, and be passionate about the things I love. Those values that he honoured allowed him to achieve a life full of successes: a family of a loving wife, three daughters and seven grandchildren, a respected cattleman, and a man of a thousand skills. Success is subject to variation and interpretation for everyone, but that doesn’t devalue others’ successes. Despite being young my list of current successes is long and will only continue to grow in many areas personal and professional as I progress through life. My aspirations and aims for goals in life would certainly not have been the same without my grandfather and his guidance. I only wish I had more time to learn under his guidance because he was far more than just a grandpa.

$5,000 - THIRD PLACE
JORDYNN ROGERS Drayton Valley, Alberta I grew up just outside of Drayton Valley on a small purebred and commercial Hereford and Simmental farm. I’m currently living in Edmonton and taking the Bachelor of Arts program at MacEwan University with the ultimate goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. I enjoy showing cattle across Alberta during my spare time, but beyond that, I enjoy my time spent teaching the peewee showmen and hanging out with family and friends. A Push to Be Your Best By simple definition, a role model is someone you look up to and who inspires you. It may be someone you grew up with—a sibling or a friend. It may be someone you learned from—a parent or a teacher, and it may also be something more fictional—a superhero or a TV character. A role model is not someone who tells you how to be but someone who shows you what to be. They may provide assistance and teach many valuable skills, but beyond that, they are an individual who encompasses qualities you wish to hold. Whoever that is for you, they are a person that pushes you to be your best. They give you motivation and drive to succeed because, ultimately, in most cases, the relationship is two-sided; they feel motivated by your success just as much as you do theirs. As we progress through life, we may have new role models depending on the stage we are in at the moment. Often, a child’s biggest idol is a parent. They spend the most time with them, and aside from a young boy’s dream to be a firetruck when he grows up, he also wants to be just like his dad. A pre-teen girl may idolize her favourite celebrity, wanting to be Taylor Swift when she’s older. In high school, lots of individuals look up to their favourite teacher. As people get older, however, their role model likely becomes someone else—a boss, friend, or family member. No matter what stage of life we are in, the people we looked up to as we grew up continue to be significant figures in our lives, symbols of who we once were and wish to be. Right now, I’m at an awkward point in my life. The people I look up to most are those I don’t see as often. Being in my first year of university, I haven’t found the person who represents what I hope to embody as I continue through this life. That considered, I often find myself looking back at my high school social studies teacher. Growing up in a small rural town, finding empowering role models in the community who had similar experiences was always challenging. For three years, she was my teacher. For three years, she was my role model. Knowing that she also spent her childhood in Drayton Valley was a huge contributor. People always talk about how they can’t wait to leave the town when they grow up, but the fact that she grew up and is living her dream career in our smaller, less opportunistic town is a motivation for success in itself. Beyond that, as I sat at a desk in her classroom, I often heard stories of her struggles living in a family full of females. She often struggled with comparison to her older sisters. She noticed this with me in class; I constantly compare myself to my sister, trying to exceed her and get higher grades. Relating to my struggle, she took an extra step as a teacher and used her stories to help push me further with the proof that it is possible to achieve your dreams if only you put your mind to it. Knowing my academic struggles, she ensured that I was doing well in class and following along with lectures. Sonia Sotomayor claimed, “...a role model in the flesh provides more than inspiration; his or her very existence is confirmation of possibilities one may have every reason to doubt, saying, ‘Yes, someone like me can do this.’” This quote is a perfect example of this connection. She shared her common experience, and this motivated me. Not only did she show extreme kindness toward me in overcoming my struggles, but she showed this same kindness to everyone she taught. The difficult students who spoke out of place in class were offered nothing but patience, and that is an admirable quality to hold. She is never afraid to be her own human—she doesn’t care what other people think of her and is proud to be herself. I admire and look up to her for several reasons, but I believe those two are scarcely found these days and are to be valued as such. If an individual’s role model is someone they know personally, the relationship is often double-sided. As beneficial as it is for a teenager to have an influential adult to look up to, often, that adult sees inspirational qualities in the other. This mutual aspect of the relationship is crucial in reminding adults of their youth and allowing some seriousness to be left behind. This is a healthy reminder for them to enjoy the twists and turns of life and take it in for all its good and bad qualities. With someone looking up to you and wanting to learn all your positive traits, you will likely notice your negative characteristics and make amends to fix them—knowing that another individual looks up to you significantly impacts your character. As individuals, we are often far too hard on ourselves for our flaws, and will fix these attributes in the desire to build a better future. Miss McQueen has pushed me to do my best, not only in school but in life. She has encouraged me to think creatively outside the box to come up with unique solutions to the challenges that cross my path. During my high school years, I applied this knowledge to my studies. As a post-secondary student, it has become something that I use in my everyday life, and I realize that the intent behind her encouragement was not simply for high school. As a teacher and role model, she wanted to see me succeed beyond the walls of her classroom. This is the true beauty of a role model relationship. Plain and simple, it’s easy. A role model inspires another being and is an individual that is looked toward as an idol. They teach you valuable lessons about life and ultimately show you who you want to be. Beyond being my teacher, the similar qualities as we grew up showed me that my dreams are possible too. As a small-town girl, my dreams and goals were often dismissed by the fact that other kids my age have had greater opportunities in education and more extensive experiences to build their resumes. As an individual who grew up in the same place as me, who reached their goals and loves living their dream life, Miss McQueen inspired me not to be discouraged by my childhood education and opportunities. I never considered myself affected by the small-town disadvantage, but knowing that it’s a very prevalent aspect of today’s society, I have always been driven to prove the stereotype incorrect, which is thanks to my role models. Proceeding with my post-secondary education, with the ultimate goal of becoming an elementary teacher, I often think of the character traits Miss McQueen holds and the impact she had on me when I needed it most. Elementary-aged children need this inspiration even more; they need a strong-willed individual to look up to. I want to be that person. I want to be the person that motivates them to do good in the world and be themselves. I want to be an influential factor in their lives—be their Miss McQueen. People often tell adults to be the role model they needed when they were younger; I hope to be the role model I had in high school. I could have chosen to write about any of the people who have impacted my life to this point. At any stage in life, about any role model that helped me get to where I am today. I chose Miss McQueen because she represents exactly who I want to be in the future. My parents and friends are also huge role models in my life, but ultimately, she inspires me the most. She not only played a significant role in developing my character and building who I am today but is an individual whose influential characteristics are beneficial to be mirrored.
page 136
Simply put, a role model is someone you feel inspired by. My experiences uncover a much more significant meaning. Your role model should be someone who shows you who to be. They should be someone who pushes you to reach your goals and gives you the drive to succeed. Beyond merely being a good person, they are someone whose shoes you strive to overfill. You hope to be everything they are and more, because you know that the future generations deserve that type of a person to look up to.

MEAGHAN HEPPNER Cochrane, Alberta Meaghan is a third-year animal science student at the University of Saskatchewan. Her passions include cattle, riding her horse, hiking, and other outside activities. Meaghan plans to pursue ruminant nutrition following her post-secondary education, hoping to improve Canadian agriculture.
Life Lessons with a Role Model Role models come in all shapes and sizes – your family, friends, iconic legends, or even professors. Professor Herbert Lardner, fondly known as Bart at the University of Saskatchewan, focuses his research and teachings on cow-calf nutrition and grazing systems to improve the agricultural industry. Role models can be many things, they can be strong, inspiring, and successful, among countless other attributes. To choose only a few to help describe such an important individual in my life is undoubtedly tricky. To help define a role model, I found a research article that described five qualities that a role model often meets. This research gave me insight into providing adequate words to describe my role model. In accordance with an article from Soleiman Ahmady, there are five characteristics that individuals should meet to be the ideal role model. Due to this paper being a medical article, it was necessary to adjust the language used in the characteristics, however, the principles were consistent. Role models according to the paper, include the following: excellent character, effectiveness as a mentor, inspiring attitude, an expert in their career, and professional demeanor (Ahmady). Bart not only meets these qualities but exceeds them. Prior to meeting Bart, I was fortunate enough to hear countless stories about his research, classes, and involvement outside of the university. From these stories I knew that he was a professor that I was looking forward to meeting and learning from. His excellent character shone through in my first class with him, he was funny and lighthearted, yet he knew his purpose. Bart’s character is most clearly demonstrated through his passion for the industry. During his lectures he provids relevant industry examples, using effective communication and interactions with his students to increase their knowledge. His kind yet often sarcastic remarks are always well intended and help form relationships with his students. Bart takes pride in his ability to identify his students by name and makes a point to remember key details about them. During my second year of post-secondary, I met with Bart to discuss my program and my career options beyond it. While discussing my undergraduate program with him, he made a point of ensuring that I was heard and provided me with advice as to what classes would set me up for success later in my program. After identifying my career goals in ruminant nutrition and genetics, he kept my goals at the forefront of his mind, continuing to share his wealth of knowledge about research opportunities, summer employment, and the industry. He was happy to provide me with relevant scholarly advice as to what decisions may set me up for a road of success following post-secondary. Bart suggested that following my undergraduate degree, I should consider following my career dreams through a master’s degree. The excitement that he had towards continued learning, propelled my interest in learning more about the possibility of completing a master’s degree under Herbert Lardner. The effectiveness of his mentorship thus far in my education has allowed me to dig deeper into my studies, working towards furthering my education to set myself up for a future of success. Recently, I asked Bart to function as my undergraduate thesis advisor in my fourth year. In this capacity, Bart will take on a more direct mentorship role in my student life as I complete a research paper to round out my bachelor’s degree. Throughout my education, I have worked at focusing on the end goal of improving ruminant nutrition and genetics. While the inspiration for my career goals did not begin with Bart, they have begun to take on a more permanent shape after seeking his advice. After reading articles that he has written over the past few years, and to see the vast array of papers his expertise has been included in, is extremely inspiring. As a successful professor and researcher, he is providing inspiration to continue to work hard to see goals through to the end. The papers that he has written and trials that he has participated in vary from raising cost-effective heifers, to improving nutrition management. The research papers prove his expertise; however, an in-person conversation provides a perfect opportunity to gain experience from his vast knowledge. The professionalism that Bart expects of himself, is likewise expected from his students, which is a quality that I admire. The expectation is that his students will be diligent in their studies and will put a considerable amount of effort into increasing their knowledge. His students are expected to do their best which I believe should be standard in a professional environment. Inspiration is not always easy to find, but when it is found, it often becomes a determining factor in the decisions that individuals make. As a young person who is enthusiastic about agriculture and the future of our beef industry, Bart Lardner and his research continue to be a driving factor in the choices that I make. To see his research be as successful as it is, and to see the respect that he has gained from his colleagues and his students, it becomes easy to be continually inspired. I am consistently motivated by Bart in my post-secondary career through conversations with him, talking about what my future could look like as I continue to apply myself. My personal life has also been influenced by my professor as his character depicts an individual who is confident in themselves. It is becoming increasingly clear to me that confidence in yourself is key, and Bart has helped to instill that confidence in me. He is not shy about his pride in his students, and it is easy to want to aspire to take pride in others. It is especially exciting to observe the findings of his research and look for ways to apply that to my own livestock. Bart is an incredible role model to his students, exemplified by how he fulfills all five of the characteristics laid out by Soleiman Ahmady’s paper. His character is honest and supportive, he provides beneficial feedback that is applicable to not only school but life as well. His mentorship qualities tie in with his character as his feedback consistently pushes me to think creatively. The stability of my current and future goals is a direct result of Bart’s advice. I am excited to continue my education journey through school and firsthand experience with his suggested research opportunities through the university. The vast knowledge that Bart possesses about the cattle industry is prompting me to pursue more information through articles and other sources so that I may also increase my own knowledge. Finally, the professionalism that Bart portrays sets a notable example for his students to learn from and aspire to achieve. Over the last four years, Herbert Lardner has been a fantastic role model and I am excited to continue to seek his advice on school and career choices for years to come.

2022 DAVIS-RAIRDAN BUILD YOUR HERD TOP 4 FINALIST
$10,000 - FIRST PLACE
CHELSIE CHRISTISON Bethune, Saskatchewan My names Chelsie Christison and I was born and raised in Bethune, SK. I attained a diploma in Animal Science and in Medical Aesthetics. I currently work as a medical aesthetician in Lloydminster, and have a small herd of purebred Angus and Simmentals on my boyfriends family farm, Black Gold Simmental. A Decade of Dreams Where would a small-town girl who didn’t know the difference between a cow and a heifer be today, if it weren’t for someone who inspired her a decade ago? A nurse? A teacher? A Social worker? I truly don’t know if I could answer this question. Life had taken a full 180 when I was introduced into the agricultural industry in 2012. What had started as a small-town Bethune 4-H club member, has turned into ten years of learning opportunities, building my own purebred cattle herd, and creating a life on the farm. “You never know who you are inspiring, so seek to inspire.” -anonymous. I believe this is exactly what Angus enthusiast, family man, and my biggest role model has done for me. Geoff Anderson has inspired me to become the person I am today. A decade ago if you had asked me if this is where I would be today, It would have been more than I could have imagined. What began as showing a steer in 4-H turned into working at Agribition, preparing for bull sales, and eventually being a full-time Anderson employee. I became Geoff’s shadow. There are lots of days, and conversations I can still vividly remember. There was one day that influenced my post-secondary journey. This was the day that Dr. Roger Davis from DRI pulled up to the barn in his white bumper pull trailer to flush three of my favorite Anderson females and implant embryos. I had the glorious job of being the tail holder. I loved it. Roger and I chatted about everything and anything! He never got sick of any question I had asked him. I had asked what I had to take in school to be his “assistant”. He had told me that they typically hire vet techs, but the girl that was there today had taken Animal Science. He loved that she grew up around cattle, and had that common cattle sense! At 16 years old, this was the day I decided I wanted to go to school for Animal Science and eventually learn more about genetics and reproduction. Geoff instilled in my brain early that if I never asked questions when talking or listening to someone with specific knowledge in a certain area, I would never learn. Geoff took me to many washing, clipping, and fitting demos while growing up, and even paid my way to attend several Kirk Stierwalt clinics. Geoff had invested in me as no one had before. He taught me that if I had an interest in this industry, I had to learn how to do things the right way and work hard at it. What I had thought was Geoff being hard on me, was actually him molding me into the person I am today. He would often leave me alone in the barn with several “clipper lines” drawn into a calf and tell me to take it from there. The fear of disappointing someone who I looked up to terrified me, but looking back I am very thankful he left me with those challenges. In 2013, I worked for Geoff at my first ever Agribition. Two years later I stood in my first-ever backdrop picture. A feeling I will never forget standing alongside the Anderson crew and judges Jill and Ryley Mader. To Geoff, his success was winning that show alongside Lacey, and new baby Seager. To me, his success was inspiring me to succeed. He inspired me to work hard to be the best. This was the same year Goeff had raised a Believe In Me clubby steer, Geoff was in Hawaii the day this calf was born, and when he returned we agreed this would be my 4-H steer. The steer calf went on to win Champion Steer at the Moose Jaw Regional 4-H Show. It was a pretty cool feeling to have my first success in the show ring, but even better was seeing Geoff and Lacey’s excitement from the sidelines. Showing steers was a lot of fun, however, I had always said to Geoff that I wanted to show a heifer at some point. He let me pick out a heifer to halter break and show at the Regina Spring Steer and Heifer Show, together we chose Anderson Lucy 1373. After showing Lucy as both an open and bred heifer, I told Geoff I couldn’t wait to show her as a pair. That’s when I was informed that Lucy would be selling at the Power and Perfection Sale later that year. Of course, I was initially devastated, but it couldn’t have worked out better, as the first heifer I ever purchased ended up being a direct 1373 daughter. In 2017 I attended one of the most prestigious Angus sales of the fall, the Angus Collection. Alongside my boyfriend Toby, we looked through the heifers and I kept going back to lot 32, Greenwood Lucy JJP 7E. The Greenwood crew have been good friends of ours, and I loved that heifer. Of course, I had to bring Geoff over for his appraisal. He had her marked as well for his son Seager, but if I was interested he said he would hold off. With all of the excitement of the sale, it all happened so quickly but I had bought her. It wasn’t until chatting with Merle Thomason that I learned that her mother was the first heifer I had ever shown back in 2013. In my eyes, this was a full-circle moment. The first heifer registered in my name had Anderson’s genetics in her. It is evident that Geoff’s type and kind of cattle had rubbed off on me. The success stories from Angus Collection are often talked about, and my Lucy cow is another example of this. Although my purchase seemed like a big investment at the time, she paid for herself after I had sold her first calf. He was a Motive bull calf, which if you know Geoff - you wouldn’t be surprised by this. This bull calf was sold through Black Gold Simmentals’ annual bull sale! How did my Angus heifer end up living at a purebred Simmental operation? Well, Geoff had something to do with this as well. Like all things in my life, he has also played a major role in my relationship as he is the one who introduced me to Toby at Stockade Roundup in 2015. Geoff has always known what’s best for me, except for leaving me surrounded by 300 Simmental cows in Hillmond, SK. At the time I was skeptical. Seven years later I wouldn’t change a thing. Growing together with a partner, and building a family in the industry has always been a goal of mine. Geoffs’ world doesn’t go around without his wife Lacey, and quite honestly, mine doesn’t either. The two of them make a team that I have strived to replicate. Lacey showed me how to balance a relationship, three kids, and a busy cattle operation. Yet she still would always make time to have fun! I’ve mentioned many of the things Geoff has taught me, but there are so many things Lacey has taught me along the way as well! She taught me that raising kids in the cattle world doesn’t mean that you have to be a stay at home mom and sacrifice your time with the cattle. I remember walking a cow into the barn that was starting to calve with Seager strapped onto my chest because he couldn’t be left alone. When things needed to be done, Lacey had taught me to find a way to get them done… before Geoff got back! The two of us always managed to get things done with a lot of laughs along the way! She is the queen of halter breaking. She also went to hair school so that she could have the most jet black cattle at any show! She always did everything in the best interest of the farm. She has a love for cattle like no other and would have been around them every day if she could have. But Lacey worked off of the farm to help support her family. Some days were tough and sad to miss out on, but she always put in a shift at the farm after hours no matter how long her work day was. At this point in my life, I am working off of the farm, and spending any day off with Toby and the cows. One day I would love to work on the farm alongside Toby, but I am currently happy working off of the farm, making my own income, and being independent just like Lacey was. It excites me that now, in 2022 she is pursuing her dream by working ON the farm, alongside Geoff at
page 138
KT Ranches. Geoff and Lacey moving to BC to operate KT Ranches seemed like the end of a book. The operation that taught me so much would be no longer. I learned this November that it wasn’t the end of a book but the beginning of a new chapter. Farm Fair International 2022 Braydon Thompson and Toby won supreme female alongside Geoff and Lacey with their supreme bull. This was another full-circle moment for me. I was able to share our success with the people that got me to where I am today. Geoff and Lacey have had many accomplishments on their own, but so many more accomplishments together. This is how Geoff and Lacey together are continuing to inspire my future. They have inspired me to grow on my own over the last 10 years. And they are currently inspiring me to grow with Toby over the next 10 years. In hopes to raise and show good cattle together and eventually one day have success as a family. Seeing them succeed together inspires me to believe this is only the beginning. Where would a small-town girl who didn’t know the difference between a cow and a heifer be today, if it weren’t for someone who inspired her a decade ago? I will never know the answer to this question, but what I can conclude is that where I am today is largely influenced by Geoff and Lacey Anderson teaching me the way of the cattle world over the past 10 years. My future has been inspired by Geoff investing in me, helping me create my own Angus herd, and demonstrating what it is like to work alongside a family. Geoff and Lacey are the most influential people and will continue to pave the road to success in my future.

$7,500 - SECOND PLACE
AMANDA STEFFLER Onoway, Alberta I grew up on a farm outside of Onoway, Alberta. I graduated from Olds College in 2020 after completing my diploma in Agricultural Management, majoring in production. I started Skyline Simmentals nine years ago and I love the industry. I can’t wait to see what the future holds! A Lifetime to Learn Picture this, a little girl who’s knee high to a grasshopper with the blondest hair you’ve ever seen. Now picture that little girl sitting on top of the bale that her dad just put in the feeder for the cows, quietly watching them surround her. Just taking it all in. Watching the cows so carefully you’d think she could hear their thoughts. That was me, about fifteen years ago. Doing everything I could to be out with the cows as often as possible for as long as possible. Everyday. There wasn’t a lot that would keep me away from those cows, besides my moms rules that is. Unless food, school or a bath was involved, I was out with the cows. Back then there wasn’t anything better. No dolls, stuffed animals, video games or even friends could compare. My love for cattle has always been there. It’s in my blood. When it comes to role models, I have a hard time trying to focus on just one. I’ve been lucky enough in my life to have more than one person to look up to. I am a very firm believer in the fact that you can learn valuable lessons from many people that come and go throughout your life. Becoming who you are meant to be shouldn’t be completely reliant on gaining all of your information from one person. Having an open mind to new perspectives is what keeps you from becoming stuck in your own ways like the stereotypical farmer does. With that being said, it’s time to introduce my first mentor, my dad. My dad was the one who encouraged me to start raising purebred Simmental cattle. I remember when I was 13 years old, we were driving to the feed mill to get some salt and minerals for the cows and we got onto the topic of registered cattle. He told me when he was just out of high school he bought some purebred Simmental cows but after a lot of hard work, things didn’t pan out. At the age of 13 I phoned a reputable breeder and set up a date to go and take a look at some papered heifer calves, and since then I’ve never looked back. My dad was the one who started it all for me. Never in my life have I come across someone who works harder than my dad. He taught me that in order to get anywhere in life you not only have to work for it, you have to work hard for it. The work ethic I have today is all because of my dad. At a young age trying to keep up with him seemed impossible. The funny thing is, I still struggle to keep up with him. Now don’t get me wrong, if it was up to my dad we would work from sun up to sun down, day in and day out. Thankfully, this is where my next mentor comes in, my mom. My mom knows what hard work is, she grew up on a farm as well so she is no stranger to the long hours. After years and years of all work and no play she finally realized that it actually is okay to do something for yourself once in a while. She taught me that yes, it is very important to have a good work ethic, but it’s also important to get off the farm, to take breaks and take care of yourself. Working on a farm can be extremely rewarding but at the same time it is also very hard on your body and at times your mind as well. Thanks to my mom, my brothers and I have learned that the farm will not self-destruct just because we go to the movies with our friends, or go into town to get some jeans that aren’t worn completely through. She always makes sure we know the importance of a work-life balance. Even now she still has to remind us when we are over doing it. Both of my parents have taught me almost everything I know in my life, even though I may never be able to truly repay them, I will hold the lessons and memories close to my heart for the rest of my life. Maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll be able to pass the knowledge on to the next generation of farmers. I think that a lot of farmers struggle with a work life balance. Taking care of the livestock is very important but taking care of ourselves is just as important. It is very easy to get lost in farm work and forget this importance of a work-life balance. During my time in the cattle industry, I have been lucky enough to get to know many great purebred Simmental breeders. Starting at 13 years old meant that I had a lot to learn. I am fortunate that the Simmental industry has been very welcoming to a newcomer such as myself. There was one family in particular that took me under their wing and helped me navigate my way through the new journey I was embarking on. This family treated me like I was one of their own. They taught me that you should be proud of what you do, but at the same time you have to be humble and willing to help those around you as well. They taught me that just because you know what you’re doing, that doesn’t mean everyone else does. If you see someone struggling, instead of feeling good about yourself because you might have it figured out you should help them figure it out as well. Being a farmer is not only about you and the operation you’re running, it’s about the entire industry. Everything is interconnected. We need to stick together and help one another out as much as possible. I am very grateful for breeders who have reached out to me with kindness, sharing their knowledge with me that they’ve gained after years of experience. Research can definitely help you out in many ways but it doesn’t compare to the knowledge these farmers have from years of actually doing it.
page 139
My parents have always had commercial cattle but the purebred industry was a whole new world to me. Without the help I was lucky enough to receive through out the last nine years I really would not be where I am today and I mean that. Don’t get me wrong, I still have so much left to learn, which I am very excited about. But for the knowledge I have so far, I owe it to the amazing people of the industry as well as the family who took me in and guided me through this incredible journey. Sometimes our role models are the people who more familiar with the industry; we crave the knowledge they have. But sometimes our role models are the ones that have qualities we wish we had in ourselves. An example of this for me would be my grandmother. After losing her lifelong husband over twenty years ago, she never left the farm. I have never met someone so giving and loving in my life, this all while being the strongest and most independent woman I know. My grandma has always been one of my top supporters. It doesn’t matter what I am doing or where I am doing it, she always cheers me on. My grandma never had much growing up or even when she was raising kids. You would never hear her complain about money or not having big fancy things. She valued, and still to this day values, love and family more than anything. Nowadays everyone wants the newest equipment or to have as much money in their bank account as possible. What they don’t realize is that if you have the support system behind you, you can still accomplish anything you put your mind to as long as you are willing to work for it. My grandma is always telling me that I am working too hard. I am trying to pace myself, but I am just so excited for what the future has to offer and I know that to get to where I want to be I have to work hard for it. My grandma is one of the strongest people I know and having her continued support no matter what crazy idea I come up with, has truly been one of the best blessings of all. Overall, I have been lucky enough in my life so far to have multiple people to look up to as role models. Growing up watching my dad put absolutely everything he has into the work he does every single day. Even when the weather was not ideal, or market prices for cattle were so low it almost didn’t seem worth it, he never gave up. To this day he is still working harder than anyone else I know, and he is living proof that if you are willing to work for it, you can achieve anything. With that being said you also have to remember that you can only work so hard for so long before your body needs to have a break. My mom has always reminded us that the farm will not faulter if we do something for ourselves every once in a while. Taking care of your mind and your body is just as important as anything you do on the farm. Mental health is not to be taken lightly and a lot of farmers struggle with the ups and downs that come with farming. You can’t control the weather or grain, livestock, equipment or fuel prices, no matter how hard you try. Taking time off the farm is not against the rules, although my dad would argue that. But having a strong support system behind you can definitely help with some of the struggles that come with the job. Having someone to lean on when the times get hard can make a world of difference when it comes to managing the stress around you. That being said, having someone to celebrate the good times with is equally as important. Getting to where you want to be alone is something to be proud of, but once you are where you want to be in your life, who are you going to share it with? Having people you love around you makes the journey so much more worth it and thanks to my grandma I will always hold my family and loved ones close as I move forward in my life with courage, knowing they will be there when times get tough, but also knowing they will be there to celebrate the good with me. The same idea can be used for the other people in this amazing industry we share. Helping the ones around you that are not as experienced as you are honestly will change their lives. If the family that took me in when I was starting out would’ve just brushed me off and told me to figure it out on my own, I really don’t know where I would be today. I am beyond grateful that they were kind enough to open their minds and hearts to me. I really would not be where I am today without any of the amazing people I discussed above, in addition to the others who have helped along the way that haven’t been mentioned. My life would be completely different if any of these role models were not a part of my story and for that I am so incredibly grateful I get to live this life with each and every one of them.

REESE RUSENSTROM Bristol, Quebec Reese Rusenstrom, is sixteen years old. Her passion for the beef industry started while working at Rosbern Farms but grew as she got to travel across the country showing cattle. Reese is a first generation beef farmer, who owns South Bristol Cattle Company and looks forward to pursuing a career in agriculture. Who is your role model? “And here’s to the first women who picked up a set of clippers and said, move over boys, we’re here too.” -Fawn Jackson When I found out about the opportunity to write about my role models, I jumped at the chance. But then after thinking for a while I wasn’t exactly sure what this entailed or who to write about. It wasn’t because I have no mentors, it was because there have been so many amazing people that have made an impact on my life. From 4-H, to agriculture, and academically, there have been more people than I can count that I look up to. After thinking for a while I knew exactly who I’d write about. Growing up in a small rural community in Western Quebec there are only so many sports and extra curricular activities one can do. My lack of coordination for dance had moved my interests to 4-H even though I never grew up on a farm. Throughout my younger years I showed sheep, goats, rabbits and dairy heifers. None of which I felt were for me. You could say I gained a lot of experience trying new things. In 2019, I got offered the opportunity to show a little orphan Simmental heifer calf. At first I was not sure, I was used to trying new things, but beef cattle seemed really different. I didn’t know what was involved and was not sure if it was going to be as easy as it seemed. Despite my doubts, 4-H is all about,”learning to do by doing”, so I gave it a try. And almost right away I knew I had found my passion. As the summer passed, I loved this new hobby of mine. We came in last place at every single show, which was a very humbling experience but that wasn’t going to turn me away from what I now would call my life. The only way to go was up! A little over a year later after starting with my first calf, I took all the money from my summer job, and with help from family, I partnered on my first show calf with the family who got me started. There was something special about this heifer who taught me that it’s okay to make mistakes clipping, allowed me to try new things in the barn and we even took home some ribbons, that weren’t all last place.Buying this heifer was the start of South Bristol Cattle Company. This has evolved into not only a hobby and passion but it’s also a part of who I am today. What began as a brand for my farm became a fun side hustle of selling clothing and accessories.
page 140
Although currently I have sold more merchandise than cattle, since South Bristol Cattle Co. began, I have bought a show heifer each year which I then show as my 4-H project. These investments in show heifers should enable me to market Simmental genetics in the near future. For better or worse I have already learnt important lessons about beef farming. In the first couple of years my cows have had a couple of steers and I lost my only heifer calf, but I am excited about the calves that will come in 2023. That excitement is just one reason why there is no community I would rather be a part of than the beef industry. I am grateful for the people who have got me here and the experiences I have been given. The people and experiences have helped me learn that you can never dream big enough, work hard enough and not achieve something that you set your mind to. Learning this lesson has pushed me to set big goals and dream big. Fortunately, I have many people supporting me as I work to achieve my goals and chase my dreams. I believe that it is important to have ‘your people’ who will listen when you need to talk or give you advice when you aren’t exactly sure what needs to be done. I don’t know where I would be today if it wasn’t for the mentors and friends who have always been there with me. In my corner, I have a strong community of like-minded and hard working individuals, who will watch out for me and for one another. There are two people in that community that have become important role models for me. These two have taught me, encouraged me and been examples for me of everything I aspire to be. It is hard to do justice to how much of an impact they have had, and continue to have on me. Athlete, mentor, hard worker,… I could go on about everything Jackie MacGregor does on top of owning a herd of 40 beef cows. Jackie owns and operates J-Star livestock along with her husband Nathan. From being in the barn to traveling across the world competing in triathlon races, and having a full time job, there’s no slowing her down. She is one of those people that you have numerous encounters with but you do not realize at first how much her example is having an impact on your life. One fond memory I have of first meeting Jackie was at Expo Boeuf. It was my second year showing but my first big show and I really didn’t know what I was doing. I was learning to do by doing, but needed lots of help. While I didn’t know her well, she saw that I could use some guidance and she offered to help clip my heifer before show day. I quickly realized how much help I needed once I saw Jackie working with my heifer. Her caring and thoughtful personality has shaped me not only as a cattleman but also a showperson. Jackie has taught me everything from the ins and outs of the purebred beef business to slowing things down before heading into the ring. It is not just in the barn or showring that Jackie has been an example for me. In the summer of 2022, Jackie was training for one of her triathlon races. This was a major commitment for her and meant numerous hours and miles in the pool and on the road. I didn’t realize what she was involved in and asked if I could bring over a friend I met through showing cattle to see her cows. All she said was “yes absolutely!” and she was a great host to two young people interested in the beef industry. I found out later that she changed her entire training schedule that day to meet us and give my friend and I a tour of her farm. It would have been easy for her to say she was busy and put off two high schoolers but instead her true character shone through as she made the effort to make our visit a priority. Jackie has a passion for helping and sharing her extensive experience and knowledge. It’s something that I’ve seen first hand and hope to be able to pass onto others in the future. Jackie is a role model from where I grew up and I got to know her over time going to the same shows. My second role model had a major impact on me from the first time we met. Most people may have met Fawn Jackson in the barns at major cattle shows across the country or maybe in the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. I think how a girl like me from a small town in Western Quebec ever had the chance of meeting Fawn, who comes from Inglis Manitoba but has traveled around the world, can only be explained as fate. I had the privilege of first meeting Fawn through 4-H. I was the 4-H club President and some friends suggested that I reach out to Fawn and invite her to come out to a local farm and speak to our club. I had no idea when I contacted her how much of an impact she would have on my life. It was great to have her come speak to the club. When she spoke to the 4-H kids there were many different topics that she covered, from careers in ag to basic showmanship pointers. But Fawn went above and beyond, I’ve learnt since that is how Fawn normally does things. Not only did come to the 4-H meeting, she came early and spent the afternoon helping clip some heifers for a show that weekend and talking to me about showing and judging beef cattle. That first experience meeting her was just the start of a life changing relationship. Fawn and her family invited me to work for them at Canadian Western Agribition. Besides getting to be on the show crew I was surrounded by a family who took great pride in their cattle and farm. Fawn Jackson is not just a great friend, mentor and role model, she is an advocate for the beef industry and women in agriculture. She also has a talent for standing up on stage and giving passionate and informative speeches that can educate and inspire many generations of people. I saw that first hand at Agribition when Fawn spoke on behalf of the judging panel at the Agribition Supreme competition. While this talent is impressive, it is her quiet confidence and her ability to get any task done that I look up to and try to mirror. It can be easy to dream big and set ambitious goals that we would like to achieve but making these dreams happen isn’t always easy. Thankfully, I have Jackie and Fawn who play a big part in my everyday life. This duo of girls continually follow up and support me on my journey in agriculture. On top of all they have done for me, both of these girls have great style and I’ve benefited from their hand-me-down clothes. Jackie and Fawn are the type of people that I want to be like when I grow up. While the cattle connected us, our friendship has continued and they are a shining example of all that is great in the agricultural community. For a 16 year old girl who didn’t grow up on a farm, finding those people wasn’t necessarily going to be easy. If someone were to tell me 5 years ago that I’d be where I am today, I would have laughed. I’ve checked off some pretty neat things from my bucket list that I thought would have taken years to accomplish but the best part, there’s still so much more to come. As Fawn said at Agribition, “Don’t compare your chapter two to someone’s chapter twenty.” I can’t wait to get to my chapter twenty. Not only have these ladies made a huge impact on my life but they are also helping grow this business by being role models for other girls, young and old, who are coming into this industry. When someone says “Women in Ag” they are who I picture. Jackie and Fawn are so determined and will tackle anything thrown at them. From a large audience to a few young aspiring farmers, their lessons, big and small, are changing and challenging the minds of many. Women have always been a huge force in the agricultural community. They can be the unsung heroes who work equally as hard but with less reward and recognition. While it would be lengthy (and probably impossible) for me to list all of these strong females whom I respect, I am proud to be a part of an amazing community that is changing the face of the beef industry. When I am talking to people, especially younger 4-H members who look up to me, I like to challenge them to go out and find “their people.” The ones who will lift you up, be proud of you regardless if you come first or last as long as you give it your all, pick up the phone to visit and smile when you achieve your goals. Jackie and Fawn are my people, and my life is much better because of it.

TRINITY MARTIN Stettler, Alberta
My name is Trinity Martin and I’m 19 years old. I grew up on a small purebred and commercial Simmental operation just outside of Stettler Alberta. My family has been apart of the purebred industry for over 50 years and raising and showing cattle is my passion. Change is inevitable, Growth is optional Growing up in the agricultural community I have been blessed with many strong impactful role models who have taught me various life lessons throughout my show career. I’m 19 now and like most people covid took over two years of opportunities and memories away from me! My senior year of high school, a normal graduation, summer trips and shows, and the opportunity to meet new people and attend interactive college classes. The harsh reality of covid left me feeling lost for direction and wondering when it would finally end. Online school was a challenge for me right from the start because I have always been a hands-on learner. Despite this I still made attending school this past fall a priority despite knowing restrictions could come back into place, and they did. It was a lot of pressure and severely affected the mental health of not only myself but that of many other post secondary students. I wasn’t getting the support I needed and ended up dropping out before the second semester feeling like a complete failure. Little did I know this would be the start to a whole different path I never could have imagined. Not even a week later I was at a cattle show surrounding myself with the support and reassurance my show family has always given to me, and I was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Australia for 2 months and work with some amazing beef producers. Taking that offer was the easiest and most rewarding thing I had done since covid started. The amazing friends I met down all the way on the other side of the world showed me just how strong the cattle industry is across the globe and how we as farmers always find a way to come together to help each other when we are down. I had the pleasure of meeting and connecting with so many new people, however one inspired me the most. I had the amazing opportunity to work alongside Hannah Powe as well as her family and friends while working on their family farm. Not only did Hannah show me a whole new outlook on life; she helped me gain the confidence to have the same outlook for myself. Life can be difficult and stressful, and I have found it very hard to stay positive during the last 3 years of this pandemic and I know a lot of people around me can say the same. Hannah grew up on a small cattle operation just like me and understands and showed me it’s ok to not know what path you want to take or what you want to do early in life. She is still deciding her path and working hard to achieve her goals even moving into her 30s. Don’t get me wrong I know that’s not that old, but I have always been led to believe that you should have everything decided as soon as you graduate and that going to college isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity for success. Hannah however, despite attending a few years of college still spent much of her younger life traveling and soaking up new experiences. She has traveled the world to better herself as well as her family’s red angus operation. She strives to make connections and friends wherever she travels and has done so through her immense networking skills. Despite taking all this time to travel though she still has worked her way to livestock editor of The Land, a large agriculturally based newspaper in Australia. Hannah is simply one of the most caring, ambitious, and hardworking people I have ever met. I think I will always strive to be more like Hannah and will always be inspired by my time with her this past year. I am also trying to make the most out of what is sadly my final few years of junior shows by investing my earnings mostly back into my cattle and have loved every minute of it. I will forever be grateful to be born into such a supportive industry and am so proud to see how many in this line of work in the end were affected by this pandemic and how we all stuck together as a strong, like-minded community.
