Bulls sold with a “Responsible Breeder Guarantee of Satisfaction.” In the unlikely events of a dispute, the regular terms and conditions standard with the applicable breed association shall apply. In any case, the seller is not responsible for more than what the bull sold for at the auction mart.

Purchasers Risk – Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Insurance will be available sale day.

OUR PROGRAM

This year Byron has asked me to write the summary of our program, so here’s my kick at the can. We have been raising Simmentals and Charolais for going on over 11 years now. A sound piece of advice we heard from breeders when we got started in purebreds was, “You guys have raised commercial cattle so make the cows and bulls the way you like them, want them and that you know work for you.�

We acted on that piece of advice; after having raised our commercial cattle from 1992 to 2008 and moving into the purebreds in about 2007 we strongly believe that the herd must have the following: ability to cover pasture ground and grow without pampering. We want to see soundness and durability in their make-up that allows them to do that. We look for longevity in fertility and with udder structure which will allow that cow to stay around for a long time. Workability, I want to be able to go out and work with the girls at any time of the season and enjoy my day and return back to the house with a smile on my face. If that cow spoils the day for me then why is she still here, time for her to be gone. Happy wife makes a happy life!

The bulls are also the same. We want to see soundness, virility, growth, hair and disposition. We have a strong influence of polled genetics in our bulls; again this goes back to what we liked as a commercial breeder.

We have been sourcing our genetics by natural breeding with selecting the best herd sires we can buy and by using semen packs for AI from some of the leading industry bulls. By doing this we have been advancing our program forward and we believe this should give you confidence in selecting and purchasing a bull that will work for you in your program

Welcome to the 7th Annual Built Right Bull Sale. 2019 has handed us another bag of tricks this year, just like last. 2019 once again has taught us how to be persistent, patient, think outside of the box and keep believing and hoping in ‘maybe tomorrow!’ We pray that everyone has or will come through it in the end and if your harvest didn’t get completed that it will still be of value come spring.

We are continuing to raise, develop and grow our bulls on a balanced TMR ration. Again, this year we are working with Bullseye Nutrition who have developed a specific TMR ration created for our program. As always we stand behind what we raise and so if you’re not happy then we’re not happy.

We are excited to see familiar faces and to see new faces for the upcoming bull sale season. Stop by and walk through the pens and see if what you’re looking for is here; you’re welcome to visit and talk some BULL anytime.

We were fortunate enough to find Encore in 2014 at Farm Fair (thanks to Kurt).

As soon as we saw him, we knew that he was the bull we needed! Encore has won almost every show he has entered. He was champion at Fort Worth, Denver, Olds, Agribition, Farm Fair and a supreme finalist at Agribition and Farm Fair where he missed winning the truck by a couple points! Encore is backed by maybe the strongest cow family in the Charolais breed right now. His combination of calving ease and performance makes us able to breed him to our heifers successfully, but yet his calves have plenty of performance!

We found Chuck Wagon on a farm tour at Springside Farms the fall of 2015.

When we saw him and found out he was going to be sold at the Alberta Charolais Select that December, we knew we needed to try and buy him. As the day turned out we were not able to buy him but after the sale and talking to McKeary’s, they agreed to sell us a semen interest on him. We felt he was going to compliment Encore very well. Chuck Wagon calves very well, his calves are vigorous and have lots of hair.

We purchased Triple Threat as the high selling yearling from Palmer Charolais in 2018. When the decision is made to add another herd bull to our bull battery it isn’t something we take lightly. Many hours of research and miles get put on to source the bull we feel will move our program forward. We found Triple Threat in 2018. He was a very solid bull with big testicals, tons of hair, clean sheath and very structurally sound on a very good foot, which are all traits we rank at the top of our selection list. His first calf crop has impressed us and we think he will be a great addition the bull battery.

In 2017 our search for a new black herd bull ended when we saw Stimulus in his pen at Rancier Farms. At the end of the day ourselves, along with Hughalta Farms, owned Stimulus for $65,000, making him one of the top selling Simmental bulls in Canada that spring. If the shear presence of Stimulus isn’t enough, maternally he is backed by, in my mind, the best black cow family in the breed. His granddam has sold in excess of $500,000 of progeny to date.

This cow family has won many championship banners and a few supreme champion trucks! Stimulus calves to an early gestation with extremely vigorous calves. His calves boast that extra length of spine, excellent hair, well muscled and carry that herd bull presence we all desire. We feel Stimulus has the potential to be a bull that can be used successfully in the heifer pen. He has a big, bright future here, his first group of daughters are milking and to no surprise they are outstanding.

Everlast is a son of Westcott off of Blacksand Sadie 4Z. We sold him in our sale as a high seller to Todd Ranches at Czar in our 2018 sale. We were fortunate enough to get to purchase a half interest back in him as we felt he was a bull that could really make an impact here. The cows behind our herd bulls are extremely important to us and Sadie 4Z is as good as they come. She is a top donor cow for Rancier Farms and Canadian Donors. Everlast was an embryo purchase that worked. He sires loose made, thick, hairy bulls with excellent dispositions. Everlast will be seeing many more cows here in the future as he is proving himself to be a key breeding piece here for us.

We purchased Total Value in 2016 from Robb Farms. I really like the dark red pigment he possesses, as well as his depth, spring of rib and natural muscling.

All these traits are hard to find in a polled Fullblood bull, thus making him their high selling Fullblood bull that spring. He breeds very true and his calves are easy to pick out in the bull pen. We are very happy on the job he is doing for us thus far.

Krypton is a herd bull purchased with Double R Simmentals of Biggar from Storebo Farms. Originally bought as a cleanup bull for our heifers, Krypton has become a main breeding bull here for our red program. He is stacked with bloodlines in his pedigree like Wheatland Stout, LRX Cheyenne and General Lee to name a few. He adds a little more frame to his calves without sacrificing thickness and muscle. Krypton is very fluid in his movement and stands on an excellent foot. For those who have seen the Ikea start the car commercial, that is how we feel with Krypton. He was a steal of a deal and are extremely happy we own him.

“Jimmy” is our walking heifer bull. He was selected from South Holden Simmentals in 2017. This WS High Stakes son is a calving ease specialist. He sires calves that come really easy with lots of vigour. His sons are very well built, sound structured and dark red in color. His daughters are good as well and the ones here that now are cows, are very strong uddered, good producing females.

OUR PROGRAM

Our cattle run in the Battle River Valley so structure is key as they have to walk up and down hills grazing and for water. We don’t pamper our cows; they run like our commercial herd, on grass as long as possible then bale grazing until calving. Our cows don’t get second chances, they raise a quality calf and come in bred on time or they go down the road. Our aim is to have cattle that are functional and sound for a very long time, easy doing cattle that convert feed into pounds while catching a grade. We use the best sires we can, through both AI and natural service and use embryo transfer to increase our rate of genetic advancement. We work with the Lloydminster Animal Hospital to provide a complete herd health program and and Bullseye for our herd nutrition needs.

Dear Friends

It seems like just a few weeks ago we sat down to write the 2019 greeting and now here we are, already preparing for the 2020 sale! 2019 is a year that we will refer back to in the future. What a year it was! Seemed Mother Nature thought she would test us at every turn! But here we are, we made it through, and are ready for another trip around the sun! The calves are coming fast and furious right now, it’s an exciting time of year seeing our breeding selections come into fruition.

We are loving the way this year’s bull pen is looking and can’t help but think this is the best set of bulls we’ve raised yet, ( this year’s pictures truly don’t do them justice). I feel like we say that every year, but it’s the truth and our goal is to continue to move forward with our herd and genetics. Every year we are selecting new genetics based on some pretty strict guidelines that we’ve created; we cull our females hard and see the fruits of our labour when we walk through our yearling bull and heifer pens. This year’s sale once again has us selling 5 purebred heifers as well. Our replacement heifer pen seems to get bigger and bigger each year and the pasture we have dictates that we can’t keep them all, so we are offering up a handful for you to take home and put to work in your herd.

The bulls are being developed along nicely this year. As always, these bulls are fully guaranteed and if for some reason there is an issue, we want to be the first to know. We always carry spare bulls and will have one to get your cows bred should an issue arise.

There are many people that help us throughout the year at the shows and at the farm with cattle, kids and equipment and we couldn’t do it without you.

Espionage came from the Hamilton program after being a member of their Denver Pen of Three. We had to stretch hard to get him bought as one of the features and high sellers at $30,000 but has proven to be a good choice. He is a moderate, soft made bull that is very easy fleshing. He has proven to be a very efficient breeder, working at two places each year being co-owned with Clifford Land and Cattle. He has proven to be a consistent calving ease sire whose calves come with a short gestation. Sired by the Agribition Champion Bull, G-Man and out of an amazing donor for Hamilton’s in the Tibbie 102W cow. Easy Rider was our 2018 lead off and high selling bull selling to to Clifford Land and Cattle for $17,000. A bull that had a successful career in the show ring, but more importantly in the pasture as a proven herd sire. He was the lead bull in our Farmfair 2017 Supreme Champion Pen of Three Bulls. We retained an interest in Easy Rider to incorporate more genetics from his amazing sire, Bar-E-L Muchmore 155A, who has made as large of an impression on our program as any bull we have ever used. Combined with his donor dam, Pedersen Blackcap 230A, who is the highest income female on the place and one that produces a ripper every year. Easy Rider is a bull that has explosive muscle shape, added length of spine and moves out very well. The one trait that we absolutely love about this bull is how much depth of heel he possesses and a strong overall hoof shape and size. Sky High was the $136,000 lead off bull at Musgrave’s 2016 Bull Sale. He has been a terrific sire for us and a nice calving ease option on top of that. Nearly every female that we have had from him has been selected for the fall select sales.

He sired our high selling bull last year that went to Clark Ranching and was also the sire of our high selling bred heifer at the Northern Select Sale at $12,500 to Parkview Farms. His offspring are soft made and efficient cattle that have a look to them and command your attention.

The never-ending, safe bet for us in the heifer pen and has been a herd changer.

Prince is a bull we brought out from Quebec and has been a mainstay in our program for many years and many more to come. His sons and daughters have been well recieved anywhere they have gone. They are very easy fleshing, moderate framed and consistently low birth cattle. We lost Prince to injury a few years back but we are very glad we collected semen on him and will continue to use him in our AI program going forward. We selected Limit from Wilbar a couple years back as one of their lead off black bulls. He is a very good footed bull that has stamped his bull calves with a big hip and extra hair on them. We were very pleased with his dam as an older female, that was proven in her production record having a son working at South View Ranch. A sound footed, strong uddered female that was made to last.

We were lucky to acquire some semen on Bar-E-L Natural Law a few years back and have used it sparingly on a few select cows and to do a couple flushes.

Natural Law will go down as one of the greatest female producers of all time.

His daughters have won Supremes and gone on to be donors across Canada. We decided our Quantam 6W cow was one worthy of the added investment of a $250 straw of semen and are pleased with the result of this mating. This is a bull with some added growth and dimension but maternal merit, being stacked on both sides of the pedigree to no end. Herd bull time!

Here is a little different twist for us. Last fall I went to the Camrose Classic Simmental Sale and little did I know, I would be bringing home a heifer. I had seen the mother to 765E at Byron’s in the past and think an awful lot of her and this female is no different. She was bred to Explosion 407E, a Muchmore son Byron and Clifford’s had purchased from us as our second-high seller in 2018. This calf picked a cold day to come out, which made for some short ears.

However, this is a true half blood that we think shows the strengths of each breed and what combining some of the best of WJ and our genetics can do.
