DATA EXPLANATIONS Carcass Scan Data Interpretation

How to Interpret the Results – Shari Leachman Scan results are returned to the producer for four measurements: 1) Ribeye Area (sq. inc. or sq. cms.) • Ribeye Area is the cross section measure of the ribeye muscle at the same location and generally indicates yield potential of the animal. 2) Percent Intramuscular Fat (%). • Intramuscular Fat is the percentage of intramuscular fat within the lean muscle of the ribeye and generally indicates marbling potential. 3) Rib Fat (in. or mm.) • Rib Fat is the subcutaneous fat layer thickness on the exterior of the ribeye at the 12th/13th rib and generally indicates finish or condition of the animal. 4) Rump Fat (in. or mm.) Each ultrasound carcass trait is expressed in both an actual and an age-adjusted measurement. Scan results also include indexes for each trait, which show the animal’s rank above or below average in the herd. The adjusted measures and indexes are the most informative in allowing comparisons between animals within the same herd. However, the only way to accurately assess ultrasound carcass differences between herds is through utilization of EPD’s. Ultrasound carcass traits are highly heritable, so selection is very effective in changing/ improving these characteristics.

Leptin Testing

Leptin is a hormone that regulates feed intake, energy expenditure and the whole body energy blanace. A SNP in the Leptin gene has been associated with several economically important traits including milk production, weaning weight, backfat, marbling, quality grade, yield grade, dry matter intake, and days on feed. Leptin is a hormone in the fat metabolism pathway that has been shown to affect the amount of fat deposition in beef. A DNA variant alters a critical amino acid which affects the folding of this hormone. The leaner cattle have a ‘C’ and the more marbled cattle a ‘T’ in the critical position. Therefore cattle are CC, CT or TT.

Explanation of Performance Terms:

1. BW - Actual birthweight taken within 24 hours of birth. 2. AWW - Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days and age of dam calculated by Canadian Limousin Associaiton. 3. AYW - Yearling weight adjusted to 365 days calculated by Canadian Limousin Association.

Explanation of EPD Terms:

EPD: Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents. 1. BWT: This value predicts the difference in average birthweight of a bull’s calves compared to the breed average (expressed in lbs.). 2. WWT: Indicates the ability of a sire’s calves to grow from birth to weaning (expressed in lbs.). 3. YWT: Growth from birth to yearling (expressed in lbs.).

4. Milk: A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves (grand progeny of sire) from daughters, due to genes for milk passed on from a sire to his daughters. 5. SC: Scrotal circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty and is a highly heritable trait. EPD’s for scrotal circumference are expressed in centimeters (cm) with higher values indicating genes for larger yearling scrotal circumferences of sons and early puberty of daughters. 6. DOC: A temperament score with higher numbers indicating a more docile attitude.
